GH’s Kathleen Gati on Liesl Learning Britt is Sick: “This Was the Most Painful and Profound Episode I Have Filmed in 10 Years”

This week in a preview of a heartbreaking episode of General Hospital, Liesl (Kathleen Gati) will learn her daughter, Britt (Kelly Thiebaud), now has developed symptoms of Huntington’s Disease and its progression is making Dr. Westbourne very sick.

In story, look for Britt to confide in her mother, noting that that the disease is beginning to overtake her body.

Liesl’s portrayer, Kathleen Gati shared with Soap Opera Digest (in their latest issue on newsstand now), just how mutter will react to the news.

Gati expressed: “I have to say this is the most painful and profound episode I have filmed in 10 years.”  Kathleen has played the role of Dr, Liesl Obrecht since 2012.

She goes on to say, “Liesl puts her doctors hat on to give hope to herself and to Britta, encouraging her that they are both well-trained doctors and can find a way to help Britta.”

However, that’s not what Britt wants to hear.  She needs her mother, and the support and comfort from her, at this devastating time in her life.

Kathleen shares it’s at that point that Liesl realizes she needs to stop all the medical talk and just be there for her daughter.

So, are you looking forward to the scenes between Britt and Liesl?  Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Sadly, it looks like we’re nearing the end of Kelly’s current run as Britt. So talented (a well deserved Emmy) and beautiful, she has the potential to go far in the entertainment world. Wishing her much success on one hand, but selfishly not too much so she comes back to Port Charles in the future.

How can she come back if you’re killing her off. So absurd.

Where does it say they’re killing her off? Right now, they’re just saying Britt has started to show symptoms. It doesn’t mean an eminent death.

There’s almost always a way to bring a character or a performer back. I’m reminded of Whoopi Goldberg’s line in Soapdish when the producer told her they were bringing back a decapitated Rod Randall – “how am I supposed to write for a man without a head?”

Exactly!

Right on, Steve—-I feel confident Britt will be back—I have this gnawing suspicion Dex is a medical doctor–military, perhaps? A most jarring twist would be that he will combat Britt’s disease and win–pardon the pun.

I’m going to miss Britt.

I hope they don’t kill off Britt. Kathleen Gati is a powerhouse actress but they’re destroying her family.

Doubt they will kill Britt. She’ll likely go out of town for treatment. They can always bring her back (Kelly or recast) and say Victor was behind a false diagnosis and she had symptoms close to Huntington’s, but not the disease.

As for Gati… Who would have thought that a character who kept beloved Robin Scorpio captive and put Robert in a year’s long coma would become a fan favorite. Pairing Liesl and Scott was a great decision by the writers. Nina’s not going anywhere, and she’s likely to need Aunt Liesl once the truth about Willow comes out.

She may not die off but she’s leaving the show. She’s going to one of the night time crime shows

Love Britt and hope that this storyline does not end in her dying but instead brings her to a medical facility in Switzerland to help her manage her health condition as Kelly pursues additional opportunities.

Margherita
In case you and others don’t know Kelly has already started appearing on this season’s Station 19, Thursday nights, playing a fireman’s widdow.

Hi Violet – I am aware of her current role on Station 19, thus my mention of pursuing additional opportunities. I just don’t want Britt to die in case Kelly would like to reprise her role later in the future.

Margherita
I guess I thought you meant additional opportunities in the future. I miss her already, she interacts so well with every character she’s involved with and now I’m especially liking her with Dr. Austin Holt. He and Maxi are a disaster.

Britt is one of the most entertaining characters on the show thanks to Kelly Thiebaud. She has made so much of this role since her return. Perfect partner with Kathleen Gati, who is another gem. Happy for Thiebaud but very sad to see Britt go.

I think she goes off screen to a medical facility, recommended by her mother and along the way she eventually finds Jason and returns. It might not happen for 2 or 3 years but it could happen and thats how I would write Britt off.

Timmm
Makes sense, there’s always that word remission that covers just about every illness. It’s saved many a life on the Soaps!

Yup– soap writing 101
been there and done that, so it’s most likely..
I just said much the same..
A great many see that coming, for sure.

You are hired!

Honestly, the writers are idiots. Yet, I can’t stop watching. I just keep hoping it gets better and right when it could They drop the ball. Some things are just drawn out too long. They didn’t have to kill off Jason. Loved him but just replace a close looking match. Why kill off Franco to bring him back to the same show as someone else. Just idiotic! They write things like they forgot what they wrote in the past. I was waiting for the truth to finally come out that she really didn’t have Huntington’s disease because Victor arranged for the fake diagnosis. Now, they’ve taken it for a turn for the worse! I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop and it better on the fact that hopefully the new doctor was working for Victor also because he has a vested interest in that necklace as well. Maybe she’ll make a phone call to Victor and say it’s done. I don’t know but they need to bring the storyline back to the original which is, her disease is not really that Huntington’s disease. I swear sometimes I look at this show and just feel like I am watching a ton of high school to college kids writing scenes. I know soap operas can have unrealistic storylines and situations but General Hospital is just driving me bananas with their writing. Holly over acts, Jordan feels like she’s reading from a script with a little extra feeling added. Very little. Let me stop because entertainment is my world, and I think I’m being too critical here. So, let me jump off my soapbox. Do not kill Britt off of the show please!

Perfect! That’s how it was headed and then they switched things up. I still think Victor has set this all up. I’m also thinking Austin and the new doctor are part of it. Hope so. Kelly and Kathleen are awesome.

Kathleen and Linda
A lot of wishful thinking here. Although we can attribute a lot of things to that old buzzard Victor I don’t think he can work magic! Britt has been having physical symptoms for a few years now and progressing. She’s a Dr.herself, and knows what’s real or not. Austin is a good guy, and is only being blackmailed by the so called cousin to treat bad guy’s gunshot wounds, etc.I hate losing Britt too, but she’s already started her new show, and I guess this will be the start of her exit shows at GH.

Hi Violet–
I doubt she will die..
When it comes to soap people many were to die from their illness but are still breathing..Y&R Victor’s heart transplant they don’t last forever..
Nikki and her MS seems to be gone..All cancer near-death people are alive.
And the list goes on and on. Sure someone knows the list lol
Missdianosious is common in soaps, also.
Anyways, time will tell if she will actually die.
Perhaps she will go to Switzerland for a new miracle cure..
Therefore she’d be gone for a season..

SuOOO
Hey! Hope you have/had a great Thanksgiving! Iam going out this year with a friend, just couldn’t handle the hustle and bustle of some family and their friends, in-laws, etc. Maybe that’s cold, but this year I needed something more quiet.
About Britt, sorry I got off track. I don’t think we will see her die on the show, that would be too final. Whatever happens I hope we see her again, she’s a wonderful character. What makes me most upset is that we lose Brit and have to have that horrible Victor shoved down our throats.

Hey Ghost

Not going to deny the writers make some boneheaded decisions but in the case of Jason and Franco, there are other circumstances…

While Jason could have been sent to prison or put in a coma (like Lulu), a recast wasn’t possible. Jason is a high-profile role that commands an experienced actor. Most would probably pass on the role after seeing how the show treated the last Jason recast (Billy Miller). Somewhere down the road, Steve Burton will come back and the other actor would be cast aside.

As for Franco, the writers (and Frank Valentini) had planned to bring Roger Howarth as Todd Manning. The network nixed that idea as they want to remove characters associated with sexual assault. Thus, no Franco, Todd, Harmony (helped facilitate Shiloh), and apparently Luke. Since he was such an integral part of the show for decades, I assume they’ll bend and have Tony Geary make an appearance for the 60th anniversary in the spring.

Ohhhh that was so painful to watch, but what brilliance from those two ladies!! Knowing Kelly is leaving breaks my heart, but I pray there is some sick twisted plot, where Britt doesn’t have Huntington’s (one can wish folks!) and it’s all a set up for some crazy reason that will bring Kelly back to us! UGH, my heart can’t take this!

I love the chemistry between Kathleen and Kelly! They are my favorite parent/child combo on GH. Their scenes together make you feel as if they are mother and daughter!

Alex…I so agree with you on Kathleen and Kelly’s chemistry. I will really miss that.

I really like Britt. I was still holding on to the possibility of Jason coming back, and he and Britt getting together. The writers really did a number on those two. I am going to miss Britta. PS. Please writers, don’t kill her off

This scene was heart-wrenching for me—Kathleen and Kelly are two formidable thespians—-there is no other pain which can compare to that of a mother losing a child.
I will miss “Britt”—-Let’s hope she will return —miracles do happen on soaps—it’s a constant.❤️

KT is an absolute rock star and those scenes were amazing. Hopefully, she will get submitted for leading actress nomination. Goingto miss Britt, but if I was stuck with a horrible character/actor playing Cody, I’d leave too..lol

Dont like her and I’m not smitten with her ..She @#$ Jason and everyone went crazy for but it was dumb to do. They @#$” up Jasam for a taller and brunette!!! I say they should have expanded Jasam relationship!! And their children!! I hope she doesn’t come back!!

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

Published

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).

Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.

Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON

Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”

Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).

Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.

“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?

During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.

Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.

You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.

Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Reconnects with Danny; Tristan Roberts Arrives in Port Charles, Lots of Nods to #16

Published

General Hospital’s 16,000th episode was packed with little reminders through points in today’s script that the ABC daytime drama series has set another milestone and it paved the way for the return of fan favorite and newly nominated Daytime Emmy Lead Actor nominee Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The 16,000th episode also introduced viewers to the new surgeon in Port Charles Dr. Tristan Roberts played by Dean Geyer.

Here are the key takeaways and what went down on the July 13 episode: Tristan and Jason are seated next to each other on a plane heading to Port Charles. Throughout the flight, a beaten up Jason has flashbacks to being thrown into, and being held captive in a cell and tortured. It appears Jason is suffering from some form of PTSD from what he was put through after being dragged out of Port Charles by the WSB months ago.

As the plane prepares to land, Tristan tells Jason there would be a car waiting for him once they land and to enjoy the rest of his life. Later, Tristan arrives at the nurses and doctors hub at GH and approaches Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). He tells her his name and that he is the new surgeon on staff.

A REUNION PLUS A HEAD NURSE DEFENDS SONNY

Meanwhile, at the end of the episode, Jason is outside the Quartermaine boathouse looking bewildered when he runs into Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), who is so thrilled to see his father, and the two hugs each other as tears are shed.

Elsewhere, Elizabeth tells Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he thinks its a great idea for him to get the 16th seat on the hospital board, but when it comes times to convince Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) of that, things go awry when Tracy, Laura and Sonny try to work things out. After Tracy launches into Sonny about killing Alan and Monica’s son AJ, Sonny walks away dejected.

Next, Sonny runs into Elizabeth, where he informs her what happened with Tracy. So what’s a head nurse to do? Elizabeth marches into the conference room and reminds Tracy of all the different donations and ways Sonny has contributed to the hospital from the Stone Cates AIDS wing, to the Michael Corinthos Center for Pediatric Head Injuries as well as his constant support each year for the GH Nurses’ Ball.

WSB WAR SCARS

Then, in one of the best parts for longtime fans of the series, Elizabeth talks about her legendary grandparents, Audrey and Steve Hardy and she tells Tracy they would have wanted Sonny to have a seat on the board for all the good that he has done for the hospital. After Elizabeth states Sonny’s case, things took a turn and Tracy and Sonny wound up shaking hands as Sonny is board member #16.

In the how great was it to see Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) together scenes department, the pick-up of last Friday’s cliffhanger is played out as the two former lovers fill each other in on what has gone down in their lives in the last several months including Valentin admitting he had been living in Carly’s attic, and Anna realizing she was kidnapped by Cullum, Sidwell and Cassius Faison. During their conversation, Anna sees the hallucination of Peter August (Wes Ramsey) right while Valentin is standing there.

Later Anna was on her way to saying goodbye to Valentin, when the two share an emotional hug. After Valentin made his exit, Peter reappeared and warned Anna to not let Valentin distract her because she has important work to do. Anna answers, “I know.”

So, what did you think of General Hospital’s 16,000 episode? What do you think is wrong with Jason? What is the important “work” that Anna has to do? Were you glad to see Sonny get a seat on the hospital board, or not so much. Weigh-in via the comment section. But first, check out the scenes on Jason and Tristan’s long flight to Port Charles.
