On Friday, Camila Banus taped her final episode of Days of our Lives as Gabi Hernandez!  The actress who had announced that she was leaving in January of 2014 several months ago, has been front and center in the storyline involving the “murder” of Nick Fallon (Blake Berris) of late!

Camila on her Twitter account prior to heading to the studio Friday morning, on Thursday night said:  “Tomorrow is my last day shooting as my beloved character Gaby! Thought this photo was dramatic enough. Everyone wish me luck on my last day of taping as Gaby on Days of our lives.”  Earlier in the week she tweeted, “Saying hello from Gaby’s bedroom ! This is my last week on set and it’s feeling sad ): but I know I know an exciting time is coming (: will you miss gaby ??)”

Behind the scenes yesterday, Camila’s on-screen brother, Galen Gering (Rafe) tweeted, “Sad day sis. Sad day. Wuv u!”  And Lauren Koslow took a photo for Twitter featuring very close pals, Kate Mansi and Camila which related:  “Our beautiful girls @camilabanus &@KateMansi share a hug & some very emotional scenes today! #days””

Are you sad to know Camila had finished her time in Salem as Gabi?  How do you think the character will eventually be written-out when we see her depart in four months or so? (Remember DAYS tapes far in advance)  Let us know!

I’ll miss Gabi and Camilla.

I will miss Gabby! she was a great actress on the show very beautiful looking lady. but I guess they didn’t have enough story for her she will be missed very much. as far as the way of her leaving I think probably she gets evrrything out in the open about Nicks murder but does not go to jail because he tried to rape her self defense. I think after Sonny and William get married there will be no reason for her to stay she probably leave with her on screen daughter and go far away.

have gabi killed off in a cross fireof nick’s return from the dead

I think Gabi will have a breakdown because of ‘Nick’ and will be taken to a mental hospital…Will and Sonny will get custody of the baby!

Great minds think alike I said the same thing—- hope you’re feeling better– if you had that H1N1 strain that is a bitch of flu to get over.

I like your idea where Gabi sees Nick one last time…that would be so cool, and spooky for poor Gabi! Thanks…i do feel somewhat better(it comes and goes) but im getting tired of chicken soup!!!

hope you are better as well.

like the idea of seeing Nick, one last time

I wish I was as cute as Gabs

love that she did her best… love that she’s cute as a button… love that she steered her time… in DAYS… in Salem!

Love you Gabs… and sincerely, wish you the best…

Love that you still have Ari… and Rafe’alicious

Take Care!

@jimh you know good and well from that promo that it’s NICK who walks into that church. Gabi has to have some sort of mental break or ONCE AGAIN Sami is in a cell and this time with Kate. I don’t see that happening. But Nick may just force her to go to New York with him to keep his silence. That’s what I see happening.

Honestly, i didnt see any promo…if it was at the end Fri i didnt see it…was at Dr. Office so i dint see Days end fri.

After your reply i just went on utube and agree its most likely Nick…however, whats with the ‘you know perfectly well from the promo its Nick’ got to do with my comments whether i seen it or not?

No sinister motive @jimh I naturally assumed you saw the video to the right side of the post and had watched it. I read the blog watched the video and posted. Therefor i was just making a general remark in the fact that as long time avid viewers of soaps we basically can figure out ALL surprising moments at this juncture in our viewing. No need to channel Victor Kiriakis (:

I didnt think that(sinister motive…very soapish, i like that, lol)…i was just curious by the reply…no harm.. the video on the right…it doesnt play for me on my computer…i ddnt notice it anyway…been ill so i kninda rush reading these things…thanks 4 reply!!!

KEEP DREAMING, if you think Gabby will go into a Mental home after having a breakdown, NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!! IF ANYTHING, Sony should go to PRISON for killing Nick, and Will should raise his DAUGHTER, PERIOD!!!

Now who is dreamin…Sonny killed no one(Percy did it)…ive been a Days fan since 1965 with a few breaks…lol

I thought that exactly, that Gabi will be put away because of a breakdown and Sonny and Will will raise Ariana. I think the insanity plea will happen because of Nick’s attempt to rape her. By Gabbi, loved you. You played a wonderful role.

I wish her all the best in her career. I like her, but will not miss the character of Gabi one bit. She was never so much a character as a plot device. First she was a prop for Rafe as the writers attempted to give him a family (AKA…a purpose…a reason for being on our screens). Her and Will had a promising love story, but then after months of Will being this awesome boyfriend, the writers suddenly and inexplicably made him gay. Then she became a loose cannon near psycho as she stalked herself to get Chad’s attention. Then she became a prop/baby mama in the gay storyline. Now she is the nervous Nelly is a faux murder storyline. We never really knew who Gabi was, or what made her tick, therefore, it was hard to emotionally invest in her. Was she a needy girl looking for love? Was she an unbalanced whack job? We never knew. Budgets are tight and salaries are high and viewers are fickle. Soaps need to REALLY think and plan their characters and not let them just drift in search of a story until something clicks.

Yes, that is a huge problem in the genre these days, daytime and primetime as well. Have to say though, I always enjoy Days when Gabby was onscreen even though I do agree with your assessment of how she fit into the canvas. She has been one of my DOOL favorites because I also liked her with Nick and enjoyed their warped love story too.

Hey! Yeah…I liked her and Nick too. I don’t where why or how DAYS went off the rails with Nick, but they did. This kid is a Horton legacy character. He came on full of geeky promise, awkward charm, and everyone loved him. somewhere along the way, they turned him into some kind of a psycho. I would say drugs and being raped in prison are MORE than enough of a reason to cause a breakdown, and he is an easily redeemable character, should they choose to do that. Lord knows much worse characters on soaps have been redeemed and rehabilitated.

I agree with both of you about Nick and Gabby. I liked them together and couldn’t understand why after what he had gone through in prison they turned him into a psycho. I saw such great potential for future s/l’s with the two of them and thought they could have easily redeemed his character. I think of all the other characters on the show who have done far worse then Nick and he was treated like scum by almost everyone with no regards to what had happened to him while being in prison. I’m a newer viewer to this soap, so don’t know a lot of the history, but didn’t understand why Will and Sonny were especially hard on him. I know he was trying to keep the baby away from Will, and that he was against them because of their being gay, but after he was raped in prison I get where that came from. He realized he was wrong and brought the baby to Will while in the hospital, but Will and Sonny could never forgive him or give him a chance. Maybe I don’t know enough of the background, but I did like Gabby and Nick together when she was so in love with him. So yes I will miss Gabby and what could have been.

Mixed feelings– Gabby was never my favorite character– and it wasn’t the actress fault, just never felt the character was a good fit for the show. She wasn’t the heroine type, like a Melanie was and although she did bad things– she didn’t have the strength of a bad girl– like a Theresa, so for me the character was wishy-washy. That said I think Camila did a good job with the character– so I wish her well on her future endeavors.

Personally I like to see Gabby have some kind of mental breakdown and end up having to go institution. I would make her last shot would be of her in the day room, surrounded by her fellow patients, and she is looking out the window, and then the camera pans the room and in the corner is a guy and he looks up— and it would be Nick. Fade to black. The end or to be continued—- whatever. That would be my ideal ending for the character but I doubt that is the way it will go down.

thas actually a great! idea.. from both you and JimH

be that as it may… her love for her child… Ari… will win out

she needs to follow her heart… and traverse the world

isn’t that something… actors… with payroll… extra cashola… to explore

wish that was me… hence… Serial…

I’ll miss Gabi and Camila. She and Galen Gering made the best siblings on the show. They always seemed like real sister and brother. I hate to see her go and hope she will be back someday.

that is a really nice thing to say…. and read

for all they contributed… cute as ever!

all get out…

i loved these two…

dimwitted… didn’t bother me…

they still persevered… and left their mark

galen gerring… sparks

If you had asked me a year ago I would have said no way. But, I think she has improved a great deal and think she will be missed.

I’ll miss Gabi. I have come to really like her. Maybe she’ll get a for real modeling contract & decide to leave town. I don’t want anything bad to happen to her!

I know… right?

when she’d wear her hair up
she was too cute

I wish her well

I hope Gabi leaves and takes Ari with her. No interest at all anymore to see Will & Sonny get custody with that new dude portraying Will.

Gabi will have a nervous breakdown and Ari will be raised by Sonny and the stranger! LMFAO

We know that Nick knew about Gabi being behind the Daysaster. I hope emotional scenes btw Camilla B and Kate M – have to do with a confrontation and proper blame for death of Jack.

Hoping for a real twister with whom Nick has been working. Scurry back Blake Berris as Nick.

Godspeed Camilla.

I’m really not sad about this exit. I’ve grown tired of the Nick “murder” and Gabi’s nervous antics. I wish the actress well, though!

I liked Gabby and loved her with Rafe. They really did seem like a real sister and brother. It probably won’t happen, but I would like to see her in a situation that allows her to take baby Ari with her. I can’t imagine her leaving without her unless something bad happens. I don’t want to see anything bad happen. She hit Nick in self defense and Kate and Sami were more instrumental in how to cover it up. Can’t see how just Gabby would be blamed. I guess she could have a mental breakdown, but then she wouldn’t have Ari in her life. I would rather have her get a modeling contract. I agree with those that don’t want to see Will and Sonny end up with the Ari.

Best of luck to you Camilla in all you do.

love gabi but no yoy cannot do this you need to stop dropping your actors and actress please stop that asap

It looks like these young actors want to move on and do other things, can’t blame them. Gabi turned out to be a likeable character, will miss the actress that played her.

Yes I will miss Camila as Gabby! I think she’s become a terrfic actress. Too many great actors and actresses at the same time! What will this do to Days of Our Lives? I have been watching since1970! There have been some story lines I was appaled with but for the most part I have enjoyed for years. Please do not let the show go!

what about sami in a skydiving accident for sami who plunges down to her death why not have sami go out with a bang in a sami like way sami goes out the same way sami came in in the same way

I think I don’t like the new will. I can’t put a finger on why but I just don’t. Is gabi being replaced or character leaving the show? I wanna be the new man in Kates life. Lol

Please, please please get rid of that awful Nick Fallon. I can’t stand looking at him. Let him go when Gabi leaves.

Write more story lines with Hope and Aiden. Great chemistry between the two. Bo is obviously not coming back and his character won’t be recast. So, get these two together.

Also, get rid of that annoying Jordan. Put Rafe and Kate back together. They have GREAT chemistry.

I fear that you and I are in the minority! I, too, want Nick gone and the one way to ensure he stays gone, is to kill him off. I like Hope and Aiden as a couple, and I just hate the Jordan character; Rafe and Kate were one of my favorite couplings on this show . . . they ooze chemistry. While they’re at it, they can get rid of Jennifer, too; she is the whimpiest, most sullen, judgemental person on the show! If I were Daniel, I would have kicked her to the curb with all of her assumptions and judgements. She just always looks as though she’s got the weight of the world on her shoulders. . . poor excuse for a modern woman! Personally, I’d love to see Daniel with Nicole. . . . they have great chemistry, as well

i will miss camila as Gabi she is a greta actress and brought alot to the show. wishing her all the best

i will sure miss camila she is a great actress and a big asset to the show. wishing her all the best in whatever she plans to do.

Gabby will go on a modeling assignment in South America and will die via a plane crash.

i really wish they’d get rid of Nick…and they made Gabby tooooo wishywashy listening to him.. at times i’d fast forward thru their scenes

I don’t like Nick. He can go. Get rid of Jordan, also. She’s a boring actress and her storyline is getting old. I loved the old Will – Chandler Massey. Good actor. Please get Brady some help! His drinking is getting old, too. I will be sorry to see Allison Sweeney go, even though she is so self-centered I could barf. Great actress!

I’m not sure why she left but I think she finally wised up about Nick and is the one who killed him.. good riddence to him..

Miss Nick. He brought spunk to the show, everyone else just calls it in, boring. I dvr the show but end up fastforwarding thru most of it. Gotta see what the fall brings, or I am out. Not much substance anymore. Miss Kristen the most. Love/hate relationship to her, but she was very entertaining. Hate the drug story for Brady. Love him but not the drugs -gives the wrong message to viewers. Not into Marlaina either, bad actress lately. Gonna miss EJ and Sami!! They hold the show together. Rafe needs to move on – more spunky than the new girl. He is one of my favorite, but rather bored of him lately. Gotta do something about Bo – either bring him back or kill him off (sad), but stop milking a dead cow there. Add more fun into the show. More laughs. Like when the guys did the strip show. We need more entertainment……

I still think Sami killed Nick. I know both Allison Sweeney and Camila are leaving the show, but it’s more in Sami’s character to have killed someone. Plus it gives her an easy way back into DOOL if she ever decides to come back. And….is Nick really dead???? hmmmm

I knew Gabi killed Nick. So obvious. I’ve been watching Days since 1972 and I know how the writers think. But I have to say Camila Banus did an amazing job with Gabi’s confession this week. Having all of her make-up washed off between the tears and runny nose, plus her hair a mess and all of those highly emotional lines…she should win an award for her portrayal of a young mother looking at a lengthy prison sentence and life away from her one year old daughter. Was totally believable. Great job, Camila!!!

Nooooooo! I love her character.

It brought tears to my eyes to see Gabi leave today on the show. Gabi u will be sadly missed. I wish that u would return to the show because u were a big inspiration to Days Of Our Lives. You are one of my favorite characters on the show and even tho u are leaving the show I hope that one day u do return. One thing is for sure Days Of Our Lives is losing a very special lady. Good luck Gabi in anything you do and just know that I am one of your greatest fans. Your friend Angela Taylor from Newfoundland, Canada.

I have thorough ally enjoyed Camila Bantus on Days and I am very sad to see her leave the show. I hope she may return someday. However , I wish her all the best in her new venture!

You are such a brilliant actress and I hope you will be going on to use your wonderful skills.

Camila Banus is very beautiful and she did an excellent job especially the last few days in jail. I hope she comes back.

I’ll miss her 2 alot

‘Days of Our Lives’ Officially Confirms Ryan Quan Returning as Co-Head Writer Beginning in July

Published

By

There is definitely a shake-up going down at the writing team at Peacock’s Days of Our Lives. Now, the long-running soap opera has confirmed, what has been previously reported, that current General Hospital breakdown writer, Ryan Quan is heading back to his old stomping grounds in Salem. This time as the series co-head writer.

The appointment of Quan comes with the official news that current co-head writer, Paula Cwikly, who was previously rumored to be departing the series, is not. She is staying with the soap opera and transitioning to a consultant role with the show. Now, Quan will join current co-head writer, Jeanne Marie Ford to steer the ship for the characters on the canvas.

On Wednesday, TV Insider, reported the official confirmation and that Quan will return to DAYS next month in July. In a statement to the outlet, executive producer, Ken Corday expressed, ‘We are lucky to have Ryan back in the fold. There are very few people who have such a deep knowledge and understanding of our show’s history. Stay tuned!”

THE FUTURE OF DAYS OF OUR LIVES

Since Days of our Lives unusual production schedule tapes ten-months ahead of air, the new creative team’s vision led by Quan and Jeanne Marie Ford are not expected to stream on Peacock until mid-2027.

Days of Our Lives is currently renewed through its 63rd season. The former NBC soap opera which transitioned to Peacock in September of 2022, celebrate its 60th anniversary in November of 2025.

The writing regime change comes after NBCUniversal Media Chairman Matt Strauss revealed that Peacock is expected to turn a profit for the first time in the current quarter, punctuating their investment with the enduring soap opera on its platform.

As for Quan, his knowledge of Salem is tremendous. Ryan joined Days of Our Lives as a writer’s assistant in 2007 after some time over at Passions. He then spent two decades and held every position on the writing team where he previously served as co-head writer from 2016-17 alongside Dena Higley.

Later, when Ron Carlivati took over as head writer for 7 years in 2017, Quan became his right-hand man and main story consultant for his deep knowledge of the history and the legacy of the show. After Carlivati exited the show in 2024, General Hospital hired Quan in 2025.

So, what do you think about DAYS making it official with Ryan Quan as the new co-head writer of the series alongside Jeanne Marie Ford. What do you think about the fact we won’t see the changes on-screen till 2027? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

Daytime Drama Casting Directors Talk Four of the Most Challenging and Important Recasts of Their Careers

Published

on

By

Daytime soap opera casting directors: Greg Salmon (The Young and the Restless) Marnie Saitta (Days of Our Lives), Christy Dooley (The Bold and the Beautiful) and Kim Coleman (Beyond the Gates) discussed the process of casting for a daytime drama series from contract players to under-fives along and their expectations for auditioning, plus behind the scenes casting tales at their recent panel from the SAG-AFTRA Foundation.

The entertainment industry event helps actors receive inside intel from leading casting professionals and took place just over a week ago at the Meryl Streep Center for the Performing Arts in Los Angeles.

Moderated by noted journalist Jim Halterman, one of the more intriguing moments of the panel discussion occurred when the subject turned to the challenges of a recast on a soap opera and replacing a popular actor with another in a very key role. Each of the four casting directors were able to put a spotlight on such an occurrence and all were leading men on their respective soaps.

Photo: SAGAFRAFoundation

For Marnie Saitta at Days of Our Lives, she was tasked with finding the new EJ DiMera. James Scott had become amazingly popular in the role from 2006-2014. Then, enter Dan Feuerriegel, who had the right stuff for DAYS to finally pull the trigger and cast the new EJ. The character returned on-screen in 2021 after 7 years.

RECASTING EJ DIMERA

“I do know now how to best approach a recast, like I’m casting a new character,” explains Marnie. “I feel like the actor just has to come in and make it their own. You can’t even try, looks-wise, to be quite honest. Obviously, EJ DiMera is kind of a focal point (of DAYS) and Dan was such a champ. I swear to God, I think I brought him in maybe six times. I would bring him in for other characters, but I kept thinking he’s really good for EJ and it didn’t go. Then, I brought him for something else, same thing. I knew that the role of EJ was going to be really difficult to find, and it finally clicked. He took EJ in a different direction. He has a totally different vibe, but equally as effective.”

RECASTING ADAM NEWMAN

For Greg Salmon, he discussed the pivotal role of Y&R’s Adam Newman, who was previously by Tracker star, Justin Hartley and what he looked for to be able to find the right actor to be the next black sheep of the Newman clan.

“We had Justin Hartley playing the role of Adam Newman before he went to This Is Us, and now Mark Grossman has been playing him,” explained Salmon. “So that was a really tough role to recast. Before Justin, there were two other people (Chris Engen and Michael Muhney) who played the part. Adam Newman is central to the show. This is Victor Newman’s (Eric Braeden) son. So, it’s an incredibly important character to the show. But now, Mark Grossman’s been playing the role for several years now. He’s completely made the role his own.”

Photo: JPI

Salmon added the key attributes that Mark Grossman or someone like him brings into an audition for the role of that is being recast, “I really think it just comes down to the person’s energy and what they’re bringing to the character,” explained Greg. “You can’t think, ‘Well, I know Justin Hartley looks like this. And the guy before him looked like that,’ because then you’ll just get trapped. You’re not trying to find another Justin Harley. You’re trying to find another Adam Newman. I just remember Mark came in and I think he read with Eric Braeden, and he read with a few other people of the Newman family, and his energy was just off the charts. You know, this is how Adam should feel. Eventually, I think the audience really accepted him.”

RECASTING RIDGE FORRESTER

In a little-known casting story, The Bold and the Beautiful’s Christy Dooley shared how Mark Grossman almost became one of the Forresters! “He tested for us (at The Bold and the Beautiful). Mark came in and read for the role of Thomas Forrester and he was my choice for the role,” says Dooley. “The role wound up going to Matthew Atkinson, but then he came down to read for The Young and the Restless.”

Dooley was also tasked with one of the biggest soap recasts in history when Ronn Moss exited The Bold and the Beautiful in his signature role of Ridge Forrester which Moss played from 1987-2012. Eventually, Thorsten Kaye took over the role at the end of 2013.

Photo: JPI

“When Ronn Moss left the show, Brad Bell (executive producer and head writer, B&B) said, ‘I can’t recast him right now, he’s just too familiar.’ So he waited. The character was always talked about because he is one of the Forresters. Brad finally said, ‘We need to bring him back. We got to find somebody.’ Then to get Thorsten Kaye, who’s so different than Ronn, and he made it completely his own. He’s just amazing at it, so I think time helped (between bringing on a new Ridge.)”

RECASTING DR. TED RICHARDSON

For Beyond the Gates, Kim Coleman, she has a soap opera that is now building a new legacy only in its second season. However, in season one, Maurice Johnson became the first recast in series history when he was replaced as Dr. Ted Richardson with Keith D. Robinson and at a critical point in the storyline.

Coleman explained, “I think it was a transition and everyone was in agreement that it was the right thing to do. And then fortunately, we brought in an actor that the audience knew. They knew his face. He was great. Keith made it his own and there was not a lot of controversy and it wasn’t complicated. Keith D. Robinson is on the show now and everyone loves him. So, it was a very smooth transition.”

You can check out the full conversation with daytime casting directors, Greg Salmon, Marnie Saitta, Christy Dooley and Kim Coleman below.

Now let us know which of the four recasts noted do you think was the most successful? Were you surprised to learn Mark Grossman was a favorite of casting director Christy Dooley for Thomas Forrester before landing his role as Adan Newman? Weigh-in via the comment section below.
