Katie Couric Falling From Grace With ABC News And Talk Show! Yahoo Next Stop?

Courtesy/ABC
It will be some small satisfaction for soap opera fans knowing that the Katie Couric initiative with ABC is completely becoming unhinged! First, as we have reported multiple times through multiple sources her talker, Katie, has all but been written-off by Disney/ABC even before it had finished its first season in the spring.
Now Variety is reporting, that Couric is also headed for an exit from ABC News, negotiating an early end to the “special correspondent” deal that came with her talk show agreement back in 2011.
The entertainment/business news source related, “Couric is poised to shift to a programming deal with Yahoo, which will keep her visible in media circles but nonetheless marks a remarkable fall from grace for the anchor who was once at the top of the TV journo pack. She joined the Disney-ABC fold in mid-2011 after a tumultuous tenure as the anchor of the CBS Evening News.”
“There’s been speculation in recent weeks that Couric might not complete her second season of the talker now that it’s become clear her station affiliates, including the core ABC O&O group, are hunting for replacement shows starting in fall 2014. Disney reps, however, have tamped down that speculation. If nothing else, Couric’s hefty eight-figure paycheck is incentive for her to complete the two-year term of her daytime show contract.”
Variety goes on to elaborate on how the departure of The Oprah Winfrey Show, and the beloved soaps All My Children and One Life to Live, with putting Katie into the lineup was an abysmal flop : “Winfrey’s retirement, followed a year later by Couric’s arrival, coincided with ABC’s strategic decision to cancel the network’s long-running soap operas All My Children and One Life to Live. ABC O&O and affiliate stations in many markets have been walloped by the disruptions, which also undoubtedly fueled the anti-Couric sentiment.”
So, what do you think about Couric’s fall from ABC? What do you think about her locking in a new deal with Yahoo? And what do you think about how almost 2/3 of supposedly reinvigorated daytime line-up that included The Revolution and Katie, did not capture the daytime audience? Weigh-in!
Thank you. This made my night knowing she and the Revolution fell flat on their face. Bye bye and don’t let the door hit you you know where. Please bring back our soaps.
ABC should swallow their pride, admit their mistake and bring back AMC and OLTL at least as 30 minute shows. If they want to keep The Chew at 1:00pm, so be it. But cancel Katie, put AMC and OLTL at 2:00pm and move GH back at 3:00pm.
Yes, PLEASE ! Bring back AMC and OLTL. I like Katie, but she should have stayed with Matt. Actually, she should replace Matt Lauer now that he has fallen from grace.
U got that right abc new they messed up. Thsts why they brought john mcbain blar star n todd an faith an cole back .so they could build there ratings back up
It’s still a pity that TPTB are so incredibly short sighted that they won’t see the best solution for ratings: bring back OLTL and AMC. It’s so simple!
no bloody way amc and oltl needs to stay dead. were are happy with our 4 remainder soaps.
Arguably Days of Our Lives or Bold and Beautiful deserve to die before AMC and OLTL. AT the very least Erika Slezak, Robin Strasser and Susan Lucci deserve to leave tv when they wanted and not have Tony Geary or Eric Braeden reign – neither who have much class, tact or anything! Not sure Deidre Hall deserves a show either. ironically Slezak, Strasser and Lucci are the few soap legends who have stayed true to soaps. Everyone else for the most part tried their hand on becoming a “big” star. These ladies treaed soaps with respect.
Dinah that’s a stupid statement we love all our soaps.
This whole thread is pointless. Because no matters how fans rejoice about Katie’s failure, this doesn’t change the fact that ABC will never revive AMC and OLTL. Period. ABC will just replace the cancelled talk shows with other talk shows.
I’m not saying this to be harsh. I’m just being realistic. Falling talk shows won’t change ABC’s decision regarding AMC and OLTL.
good riddance her show is very boring anyway
I feel bad but I am smiling. Of course, I am a fan of AMC and OLTL.
Why should soap fans re-joice in her failure? She isn’t the reason “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” are gone.
1) THE CHEW
2) THE REVOLUTION
Those two shows are to blame, not Couric. She doesn’t even air on ABC in 50% of the markets throughout the nation.
Soap fans can be so insane.
The chew and the Revolution are not to blame either..
ABC is the only one to blame, actually ..
Soap fans can rejoice! Kate’s failure and GH’s success proves that ABC viewers want soaps in the afternoon. There is a chance for OLTL and AMC to return.
She may not air on ABC in every market, but she airs on the ABC stations that count. And it is those top ABC local station managers that forced her out! They need a good lead-in to local news and Couric is not it.
JOSHUA JOSHUA JOSHEWA…Simply put she sucks. She’s boring. The Sara Palin interview with 60 Minutes should have been enough to make ABC shy away from her. I have absolutely no idea where ANY network got the idea this lady was a valuable commodity. She NEVER has been and NEVER will be. As for the other daytime alternatives it was all left up in the hands of Daytime execs for Disney. They would rather see a show where Ariel interviews Mickey,Minnie, and Donald. It’s Disney. They think everybody wants to view Rainbows and Unicorns rather than deal with reality. SO THERE YOU HAVE IT. Soaps on their best days in their most outrageous forms echo the realities of daily living. Disney wants you spinning in a teacup while real life passes by you unnoticed.
Joshua is right…it wasn’t Katie, but the Spew and Revolution. Why is the Spew still going anyway? Are their ratings good? I never hear anything about them.
And let’s not forget that she had a big hand in keeping GH on the air.
Joshua, insane that’s a strong word people have a right to be passionate about what they believe in or hope for.
Amen @Lisa and Luke.
And as for exposing Sarah Palin for being as brilliant as a bag of bricks, well I think Couric should be given an award of some type for that!
I don’t have anything against Katie Couric.. I like her, it’s just that I want to see everything on ABC’s Daytime/Afternoon schedule FAIL.. save GH! I want everything that goes into AMC’s or OLTL’s timeslots to fail, those shows should have never been cancelled.. a crime, plain and simple. The Chew has held on, but I suspect it will soon fall as well. ABC should admit they’re wrong, bring those shows back or see everything in daytime fall.
No surprise. Nobody cares about Yahoo anymore, it’s a year or so away from being bought out or going bust. What can you say good about Tim Gunn, Ty Pennington, and the rest? It rarely happens that the most annoying people on TV are on the same show. And Katie? She almost single handedly killed the CBS news.
I have said ever since ABC announced cancelling OLTL AMC that the key was the local affiliates and their annual meeting with ABC execs. They are the only group which has the power, outside the Disney board of directors, to fix this mess. They have the most to loose as Disney doesn’t seem to care about it’s advertisers or ABC doing well. This is the best opportunity for fans to pressure ABC to renew OLTL/AMC through their local affiliates.
OLTL/AMC could return in the new half hour format which would be more economical to replace Katie and leave The Chew on, which they won’t cancel and has actually gotten better lately. It would be remarkable for ABC to admit they made a mistake and fans would be very grateful. But then I also want my own Caribbean Island for Christmas. LOL
You are so correct about the potential power of the affiliates. They need an audience in their markets. Since the almighty alphabet network isn’t help generate one, the affiliates should yell bloody murder.
Thanks for the support.
Having been on the inside I have seen how this works. Local affiliates are separate companies from the network. The sell local advertising and have local news departments so they are much closer to the people and their local community than the network.
So, unlike the network, they have to care what people in their community think because they depend on ratings and local advertising, also are regulated by the FCC to operate in the “public interest.” Even the stations owned by the network are separate companies, many were once locally owned and are locally managed.
So way back I suggested to forget the network because they don’t care. Instead, picket and call, not email it’s too easy to ignore, the local affiliates because they log in all calls and picketing gets the attention of their competition, like the other station’s news departments, especially if you tell them you are going to picket because it looks dramatic on TV. 😉
Social media helps get the word out. This puts pressure on the locals and they in turn can put tremendous pressure on the network because they are the only outlet for the network’s product. There have been cases in the past where local affiliates have refused to air a network’s programs and they were cancelled shortly afterwards. This may be the fans best chance to see their shows again, if not on ABC on another network if there is enough pressure.
I think it is to bad that they cancel all my children and one life to live. there way to many talk show on the air . I wish they could bring back all my children I am sure the viewers would watch ABC if they did.
are you kidding me, brians frons made the right decision. amc and oltl should stay dead. they were horrible shows, towards the end of the shows. amc and oltl were good at the time, now they should stay cancelled
Dinah, horrible was not the reason they were canceled, your savior brian fron had a vision about what soap fans for years wanted. Now he see he was incorrect we did not want food shows, wellness programs or talk shows.
Unfortunately Katie is BORING! She does well delivering the news but a one hour talk show is definitely not her thing. Bring back the soaps and watch the ratings go up!
Bye. Bye
One Life to Live 40+ years. The replacement shows… two already down the drain. I want One Life to Live back!
Agree
1 Week ago, i heard big rumors that one life to live and all my children is coming back to abc. but i really don’t think abc wants them back. monique is getting a daytime talk show in september. that will take over katie couric. I’m so happy her talk show bombed.
Monique show will fail too, ABC head is too far up their rear end to see we don’t want talk shows.. Tey need to learn from CBS they fight to keep their soaps #1
KNOCK IT OFF. Oprah can’t be replaced and neither can continuing daytime drama. PERIOD. A big rumor indeed.
And as for Monique she couldn’t even survive on BET so FOR REAL HOMIE???
Dumb question – who is Monique?
Monique is an African American comedienne who became an actress. If you’ve never seen the Parkers a spin off from singer Brandy’s show Moesha then her other big role was the mother of Precious in the movie Precious. If you’ve seen none of these than just do the blank cartoon stare and blink three times and move on.
GOod news for GH I think. Wish PP would just break the licensing agreement with ABC, give the shows back and ABC would put them back on the air. Its obvious PP isn’t going to do anything with them
Now if they could just get rid of thechew.
the chew is doing very well. the chew is a terrific show.
Yeah, I don’t care for any of the hosts-which makes it no problem for me to honor the promise I made to never participate in the replacement shows ABC shoved at the daytime audience. This included The Revolution, which starred the delightful Tim Gunn. I apologized when I I FB’d him, letting him know I wouldn’t watch the show. Thank goodness for Project Runway.
The chew a terrific show, “ha” I rather watch Kelly and Michael before that low rated show.
ABC, just do the RIGHT thing admit you made a mistake, and bring the soaps back!!
I agree with you judy, but abc will never admit there mistake. brian frons needs to be tortured and locked up in a cage. lol. we soap fans, will send sheila carter to torture him. lol
YES!!!!! The show was Boring!!! Hopefully ABC will do something right and bring Gh back to 3Pm at least. Cut your loses with Katie and run. But please not another talk show with 5 people sitting around a table talking.
Hated her show anyways, miss my 2 soaps!! Please don’t replace her with a cooking show!!
Big deal…theyll probably replace it with just another talk show!!!
I like Katie C. but don’t like the show at all. It is even worse than it was last season. ABC needs to bring back AMC / OLTL even if for 30 minute episodes. The audience lost would return and prob forgive ABC.
I was never a fan of Katie and her show is nothing special. However the soaps are not coming back and the network already gave the hour back to the local stations. There are NBC and CBS stations airing Katie’s show in syndication.
I do not believe any talk or cooking show will bring in the audience ABC/D had in that time slot. Should have never canceled AMC/OLTL
Talk shows has lost all their popularity, they are a dime a dozen on network and cable.
Talk shows are not entertainment they are cheap filler..
No matter who or what ABC tries to run during those daytime slots, they will fail..
Those time slots have been for soaps for past 50yrs, only an Idiot would believe any talk show survive daytime..
The odds are against it.. Oprah was an exception.
I still miss AMC and OLTL. : (
I happen to love Katie and her show. It was the luck of the draw not her choice to replace the soaps. It is unfair to blame her for decisions out of her control. I watch Katie the show is often funny as heck other times so moving it makes me cry.
Apparently you will be the one person who follows her to Yahoo.
Please ABC bring back OLTL and AMC at a half hour each….we would all be glad does not have to be one hr. each…..ABC needed a wakeup call….ABC at one time had the best daytime lineup…love in the afternoon. Loving/The City, AMC, OLTL GH and Oprah Winfrey the closer….Katie did not have any kind of following ever…
Hate to say “We told you so” to ABC, but we soap fans saw this coming. I don’t like to take joy in other’s failure, but there is some sense of satisfaction to see ABC having yet another epic fail in their daytime lineup.
Enough with Amc and Oltl ! Geez we lost so many before..Aw, Loving,Genrations…… Lets move on and talk about GH and how instead of falling flat like Katie, is living a ratings revival.
EXACTLY, glad someone finally said it !
You would understand the pain that fans are going through if GH is cancelled.
I think soaps revival is more because two major soaps left soap hungry viewers not so much soaps are in demand sadly.:(
Might as well keep katie abc will just replace her with another boring talk show. We have to be realistic amc and oltl are Over and done with.
ABC Execs & Shareholders:
This is what happens when you listen to the moronic ideas from Mr. Brian Frons.
What were you thinking???
PS: As far as GH goes…keeping Phelps & Guza for over a decade did you no favors to the destruction of what happened to a once iconic show, let alone your daytime line-up of AMC, OLTL, & GH.
ABC Daytime will never been the same. Frank and Ron are doing their absolute best restoring GH to what soaps were about and reminding people what fun it is to watch soaps and daytime TV again.
Her show was boring. She tries to hard. Most of the talkers do. That is why Steve Harvey and Wendy Williams do so well. They love what they are doing. Same for Rachel Rae. Dr. Oz.
people, ABC can not bring the 2 soaps.. PP hold the lease..
IF, ABC did get the soaps back they would never bring them back, never..
why do people continue to believe that ABC would even consider airing the 2 soaps again, it will never happen, ever.. 🙂
Also, ABC will not bring them back and none of the other networks want anything to do with them, none..
PP is the one and only hope for the 2 soaps..
I no feelings about Katie Couric one way or the other. I’m just happy to see more trouble for the alphabet network and the mouse company. Both companies should be driven out of business.
I dont care who or what they have in that time slot. If it s not OLTL I am done with that network
ABC’s loss! They always get rid of all the good shows! Katie wasn’t the reason we lost our soaps…however she is the only thing worth watching on ABC! Without OLTL and AMC there was nothing to watch but Katie! So I will just say goodbye to ABC daytime!
Amigos,Katie… go back to Today show where she belong
Are there any idiots left at ABC who just might be smart enough to foresee a ratings bonanza if they had the balls to resurrect All My Kids and One Life?!
grow up amc and one life to live is over. lets move on. gh is the soap to watch now. gh is on fire now
How can you say move on these two soap were apart of ABC just like GH . On fire if that was true GH rating would be #1 the soap that holds that spot is Y&R so don’t get it twisted.
It started with Katie on The Today Show. You either liked her and Matt or you preferred GMA. I always thought it was ironic that ABC thought their mainly female audience would embrace her, especially after what they did with our soaps. She’s an NBC type girl, and was too “perky” for CBS nightly news.
And they should have considered half-hour AMC and OLTL. I’ve since started watching B&B. Half hours aren’t that bad, certainly better than nothing and PP. And we are getting used to stories moving along much fastest instead of dragging on and on. Since we are a country known for redemption, ABC would be smart to park their egos and just resurrect both shows.
You bet – lets start the groundswell…
Bring back the soaps – ABC’s ratings would soar and we ould be happy once again.
It’s simple, they took off the shows we want to watch & replace them with garbage we hate & will not watch. I’d rather sit & twiddle my thumbs than to watch the stuff ABC serves up on daytime with the exception of General Hospital, I still watch it but when it goes off my TV changes channels & don’t come back to ABC until GH is back on !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would love to watch Katie’s show but I have ATT-UVERSE and we do not have a single channel that carries KATIE.
Yeah I’m thrilled she fell flat on her face and ABC too. Taking away the soaps was the “worst” thing ABC could have done. Bring back the soaps and just eat “crow” and put back at Disneyworld “Super Soap Weekend”
News Flash: the audience is sick of talk shows. Bring back OLTL and the daytime soap audience will return.
Give the soaps another chance, what could you lose?
Great news sorry Katie fans no she didn’t cancel the soaps ABC did and I hate them, so I am happy she is tanking let Yahoo have her.
I have never watched her show.
Not another talk show or game show or cooking show. How about our soaps back.
I think now might be the time for some creative thinking and come up with another type of programming for the afternoon. But if they did go down the scripted drama route aka as soaps they should create a new half hour one– I wouldn’t mind something different than the same ones we had for 40 plus years. I love the classics, but if soaps are to survive some new ones better start popping up soon, and until I see networks investing in creating new ones I will not be too optimistic about the future of scripted drama made for daytime.
This has MADE my day…THANK YOU!!!!! Katie Couric is so ANNOYING…VOICE AND ALL…LOL!!!!! Good Riddance, Katie!!!!!!
ABC is getting what they deserved. The ticked off the main viewer of daytime TV – the homemarker by cancelling AMC and OLTL. I hope they suffer where it hurts the most – their wallets.
Bring Back OLTL ……
Best news of the year!!!
HEY here’s an idea! Take the 20 MILLION dollars they were paying her and bring back ALL MY CHILDREN as a half hour show! Huh? Whaddaya think? How about that?
At least, bring back AMC with cross-over characters from One Life to Live or something. No one will ever convince me that ABC-TV daytime hasn’t suffered since dropping two iconic soaps from their afternoon line up. Their horrific show “the revolution” was an almost-immediate Flop and Katie’s show isn’t pulling in the ratings they hoped it would.
I don’t think we will see full Hour versions of either AMC or OLTL (too costly, I think we all get that) but either combine the shows or have one show presented as a Half program.
This is no surprise to me, I E-Mailed ABC every day telling them that Katie wouldn’t last, Katie Couic is boring and self centered her talk show is awful, and ABC should have known that if they did their homework, She couldn’t do the CBS evening news for God sakes. They ( abc) should get their act together and bring back One Life To Live and All My Children because it doesnt matter who they put on ,WE THE TRUE SOAP FANS DON’T WANT ANY TALK OR FOOD SHOWS ON THEIR NETWORK BETWEEN 1 AND 4, WE LIKE LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON, REMEMBER THOSE WORDS ABC ?
For the sake of conversation, if and that’s one huge if, ABC brings back AMC and OLTL, what makes anyone think that they wouldn’t dump them again.
They ( ABC) have proven that viewer loyalty means absolutely nothing to them.
I was a loyal AMC viewer since it’s debut in January of 1970 and as far as I am concerned ABC is dead.
How’s that for loyalty ABC?
What goes around HAS come around.
I agree in that it would be a good idea to put back AMC and OTL for half hour shows. I believe that the ratings would be pretty good have TVGN put them on for two half hour shows at night. It is the time when most adults can put their kids to bed and relax and watch some adult shows.

Mark Consuelos Mourns the Loss of His Father
Saul Consuelos, the father of All My Children alum and Live with Kelly and Mark co-host, Mark Consuelos (ex0-Mateo, AMC), has died. During an emotional moment on this mornings, April 6 edition of the syndicated talk show, Mark shared, that his dad, “passed away peacefully” back on March 23 following a long illness.
His wife and co-host, Kelly Ripa (ex-Hayley, AMC) paid tribute to her her father-in-law expressing, he was, “the greatest person I’ve ever known. I can honestly say I will miss him every day for the rest of my life, as I know you will, as our children will. He really is so symbolic of everything you are.”
Kelly and Mark’s children, Joaquin, Michael and Lola Consuelos are said to be taking this extremely hard. Ripa added, “This is the first loss they’ve ever experienced in their lives. And I said, ‘By the time I was 8, I had no grandparents. You got to grow up (with grandparents). You got to have deep, meaningful conversations (with them).”

In another moment, Mark reflected on his dad. “It’s funny, I used to make a joke about my dad … if you asked him what time it was, he would tell you how to build a watch. There were a lot of lectures, a lot of lectures and I learned so much. If he was fixing something in the house, he’d make me watch and do it. And I didn’t know at the time why he was doing that. But now at the house, I’m able to do at least half of the stuff that he did. I learned the most by just watching him.”
Mark added that Saul Consuelos came to the U.S. from Mexico in his early teens and served our county for decades, detailing, he “Ended up at Special Operations Command in Tampa. This young kid from Mexico just got his education from the navy. Was always going to school. Was brilliant. Got his Masters while I was a kid. He loved his country so much, If you’re going to put a face to an immigrant, he would be the prime example of what this country promises people.”
In a very heart-tugging moment, Consuelos shared that now its important they be there for his mother, Camilla. “We gotta take care of mom. We’re trying to convince my mom to move to New York. She’s such a character, she’s stubborn. What do you think, a cooking segment here on Fridays with Camilla?”
Now below, watch the very touching and emotional moments as Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa mourn the loss of Saul Consuelos.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Visits ‘The View’ Where Hosts Sidestep Controversial ‘Buffy’ Reboot Axing, But Talk ‘All My Children’
On yesterday’s March 17 episode of The View, All My Children alum, Sarah Michelle Gellar (ex-Kendall Hart), was the special guest. Since Monday, Gellar has been the subject of a hot-button issue since about the surprising turn of events that the highly-anticipated Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, in which she stars, and which was directed in the pilot by Oscar-winning director, Chloé Zhao, was no longer moving forward.
Gellar‘s appearance on the ABC morning talk show was devoid of any mention of Hulu cancelling its planned Buffy: New Sunnydale, in which Sarah was set to appear along with Ryan Kiera Armstrong. However, Gellar did discuss her new movie Ready or Not 2: Here I Come from Searchlight Pictures.
It should be noted that both Hulu and Searchlight Pictures are owned by The Walt Disney Company, while The View is produced by ABC News, which is also owned by The Walt Disney Company.

During the awkward interview, when it became clear the ‘Buffy’ reboot topic was off the table, The View co-host Sunny Hostin, talked about the “intense fight scenes” that have become a staple of her TV and film career starting with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Scream 2, and I Know What You Did Last Summer.
The ladies of The View also brought up Sarah’s beginnings on All My Children as Kendall Hart (1993-1995), showing a scene with her and her on-screen mother, the iconic Erica Kane, played by Susan Lucci. The discussion sprung out of another All My Children alum, Michael B. Jordan (ex-Reggie Montgomery) winning the Oscar this past Sunday for Best Actor for his role in Sinners. The View’s Joy Behar was quick to point out with Gellar, the All My Children alums that have gone on to great fame.

Photo: ABC
Previously on Monday, Gellar opened up to PEOPLE about being blindsided before while at the SXSW Film & TV Festival premiere for Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. “I got the call as we were stepping onto stage for the premiere of their own movie. And it’s also the weekend of Chloé going to the Oscars as a best director nominee for Hamnet. For them to call us on the Friday of what should have been Chloé’s victory lap for an incredible film, and my world premiere of something that I worked very hard for is… that says something.”
She went to say, “We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn’t for him.” Deadline reports that “multiple sources” identified the executive as Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich.
“I loved the duality that we had with this new, younger slayer who was where Buffy was when the show started, and then we would pick up with where Buffy was now,” Gellar told People about the setup. However, according also to Deadline “After the pilot was completed and delivered, according to multiple sources, Hulu’s main note was that it played too young, with some indicating that the streamer also felt the show was too “small.”’
In the rewrite, sources also told the outlet that the writers did not take big enough swings, so they set out to do a rewrite it again. The last revision was more adult, featuring a lot more of Gellar’s Buffy, and was described as a more of a streaming show than a network one. When all is said and done there is hope that another Buffy IP will be up and running within the next couple of years.
You can check out Sarah Michelle Gellar’s full segment on The View below. Now let us know, bummed there is no Buffy reboot? What do you think about how this high profile Hollywood saga was side-stepped on the morning show? Did you love Sarah as the original Kendall Hart on All My Children?
