Friday marked the final appearance of Marie Wilson in the role of Summer Townsend on Days of our Lives.  As viewers, know Summer turned out to be the biological daughter of none other than Maggie (Suzanne Rogers).

The character was first introduced when Brady (Eric Martsolf) was drawn to this vision of a woman who he tracked down in California! It all went down following Brady receiving Daniel’s Jonas’ (Shawn Christian) heart following a life-saving transplant surgery.  In story, Summer was at first believed to be the responsible party for the kidnapping of Brady and Theresa’s (Jen Lilley) child, Tate.  Today, Summer said goodbye to her mother and all of a sudden was nowhere to be found, as she supposedly ran out of town.

Marie Wilson took to Twitter to mark her final appearance with tweet that stated:  “Here it is….. July 29th, 2016….Summer’s last air date. Thank you NBC Days, Greg Meng, Albert Alarr, and everyone!!! XOXO”

I’m sorry to see Marie Wilson go. I’ve always enjoyed her work. The Summer character was rather one dimensional. I wish they had developed her more and integrated her into the community. Best of luck to Marie in the future.

Yes, just WHAT was the reason for bringing her on the program if they weren’t going to give her a real character and a real storyline? Just frustrating.

Marie is a great actress but, the role of “Summer” was horribly developed. A bad attempt at creating a Meg Synder 2.0; I would have preferred seeing her return as Bree Tjaden. That would have been a more realistic approach for her, as I feel as if her connection to Hope would’ve held as a better storyline.

Story never made sense. She was too young to be Maggie’s daughter. Based on the time Maggie has been in Salem her child should be close to 50 and at least older than Daniel was.

Yes, poorly conceived.

I genuinely felt bad for the actress.

Did Summer have a story or did she do the one scene with Brady over and over? The one scene with Maggie over and over. Ditto Victor. What are as her story arc? There was none.

Even today the character said : no one wants me her. She’s said this enough times that it was part mantra, part self fulfilling prophecy.

For reasons beyond my comprehension, Summer always seemed tentative, jittery, like she’d rather be anywhere else. It was odd.

New characters need to land on the canvas hard. Tentative? That’s a weak choice.

Unlike others, I’m not opposed to new characters. I’m not opposed to a large cast. But they have to have storylines, they have to have a world view and aspirations. But to do this, you have to advance storylines. You can’t ask two actors, say Brady and Summer, to do the one scene three times in one episode every week for five months. (Trust me, I want to trust you. Believe me, I want to believe you.)

What did summer want? We never learned that. The writers gave her nothing.

I wish the actress a better role than this.

Marie did a fine job, but DAYS should’ve never created the character of Summer who turned out to be a bummer. Ironicly, considering the character’s name, the storyline ran cold. I was in a shivering slumber!

Pretty much a complete and utter waste of time and a squandering of viewer interest and loyalty. A flicker of a concept is not the same as a story line. Next time write a long-term story before launching a role.

Nothing against the actress but the character of Summer was an epic fail…want a Maggie daughter storyline then use Melissa or Sarah-enough said!!

even worse than the elephant storyline with the red haired exgirlfriend of erics from africa…. at least i watched days then… everytime i saw this throwaway character on the screen i changed the channel…
was this just a useless filler storylinr until days hired real writers.? talk about a pile of shit. no woner days is losing teresa… and thousands of viewers

Good Actress .. storyline… so so so so……

I like Marie Wilson but the character of Summer just didn’t click. She’s great but it just didn’t work…for that reason, and there are too established many characters that deserve more story, I am glad the character has exited.

Days needs to stop blaming actors for bad writing choices. Summer was, by all accounts, not well received. Yet, how many popular soap performers have been brought on and let go within a short amount of time? Marie Wilson was let go before Summer even aired, and it was likely because she was a Josh hire and character and Dena Higley is a petty, spiteful bully who fired all Josh’s hires so there would be more room for her beloved Hernandez family. Dario is not popular either, and yet he’s still around.

It’s been clear for a long time that Days’s problems are because of the long lead time. The writers don’t have any ability to adjust story once a character starts airing. Also, Ken Corday – who is not talented and not smart – is notorious for interfering with the writing. Except of course, when it’s Dena Higley’s unhinged lunacy. He seems very supportive of that nut job and her nastiness.

If they don’t go to a reasonable lead time, they might as well cancel it.

kaylie15…I get (and agree with) what you’re saying here. I especially agree with you about that Dario dude. At this point, I find Dario to be FAST-FORWARD MATERIAL ALL THE WAY!!!!! YIKES!!!!!

Later.

They just never should have cancelled ATWT when it was on fire at the end with Chris Goutman and now GH impresario Jean Passannate would be working on a better show – actors like West, Cosgrove and so many others would be on a better show than Days or GH right now. GH was on fire I thought when Jean was working under Ron. Then they brought in all these breakdown writers from what I thought was Days and it is not that good and even those breakdown writers did better with Days like Janet Ianconubo??? I think right now B and B as stale as it is is the best with opportunities at GH but it needs to find its footing or bring Ron back and please keep Chris Van Etten, Scott Sickes et. al but I do not know why Ron was fired so abruptly. There are so many talented actors over at GH – Michelle Stafford etc. Character drives a lot of the storylines but I want some more whack stuff that Ron and Frank did.

I realy liked Marie as Karen on Port Charles! She should go to GH, after all Scotty is still there and so is Sonny…

Isn’t this the same actress who warned Hope about Aiden?!?! And that wasn’t that long ago… Geez, I thought only GH hired the same actors repeatedly to create 2, 3, up to 4 different roles…

Perhaps before your time…but Josh Taylor (now Roman Brady) played the beloved character of Chris Kositchek. He was a groomsman for Roman and Marlena’s wedding.
Roman was played by Wayne Northrup (who’s married to Lynn Herring – Lucy Coe on GH).
When Wayne was on “Port Charles” they re-cast Roman with Josh Taylor. I still can’t accept him as I only see Chris Kositchek. But Johs is Ken Corday’s BFF.
DAYS did a great job when they had Eileen Davidson playing up to 5 different characters at once.

Thanks for the background information, mrsnoahdrake! I had read about (and forgotten about) Eileen Davidson’s multiple roles. And I can see how you would fondly identify Josh Taylor as Chris Kositchek. And I guess that pertains to my original point: it is unsettling to see the same actor recast in another role on the same show. Thanks again!

She should go to GH. They’re having a hiring spree!

She used to play Scotty’s daughter, Karen. They killed her off. I think it was on “Port Charles”
Poor Scotty also lost his son Logan. Now he’s stuck with crazy Franco.
And no sign of Sarena, whom we’d love to see!

I don’t watch DAYS, but I loved Marie on AS THE WORLD TURNS – I would love it if she turned up on “Y & R”!!

Well there’s nothing much I can add here that hasn’t been said, but the character of Summer didn’t appeal to me and I guess not to other viewers as well. The actress portraying her was fine, it just didn’t seem to connect with any storyline – and Brady having visions of her because he had Daniel’s heart was ridiculous to begin with.

Right you are. It would have been so much more interesting if they had transplanted Dr. Dan’s heart into a resurrected Chandler Massey version of Will. Heck, even slapping that heart into bellhop Derrick could have provided more interesting storylines than what’s going on now.

Yes, I agree – they really need to give Sonny a storyline now that he’s back and I too wish Chandler Massey was on the scene. As for bellhop Derrick, well He can ring my buzzer anytime LoL – but alas, he was only on the show on short contract (I assume) – and Paul certainly needs something to do other than always looking on the computer for his raspy voiced dad or fetching hamburgers.
Well, when DAYS OF OUR LIVES returns on August 22nd I guess we will find out in which direction the writers are going – lately it feels like they are
just going around in circles!
