Patrick Mulcahey OUT as General Hospital Co-Head Writer
After various reports surfaced, it has been confirmed that Patrick Mulcahey is out as the co-head writer of General Hospital. This is after a very short tenure of under five months.
Mulcahey was named to the position back in January of 2024 along with longtime GH writer Elizabeth Korte. They replaced the team of Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor, who had been the head scribes of the long-running ABC daytime drama since 2019.
A source informed Soap Opera Digest that stories created by the co-head writing team of Mulcahey/Korte team will air through mid-summer. However they added “There will be more news to share at a later date as to the composition of the new writing team.”
In addition, eagle-eyed soap fans have seen that in recent episodes former co-head writer, Chris Van Etten has been credited, as he is reportedly a breakdown writer with the show.
Soap Opera Network is reporting that Korte has assumed the head writing duties solely on her own at the moment, while Buzz blog initially reported Mulcahey’s exit.
We will have more on the GH writing team evolution in the days ahead.
What do you think about the writing team changes at GH thus far? Comment below.
Did the sudden unexplained pandemic of Sonnyphobia affecting most of the long term characters have something to do with it?
But I would argue it wasn’t unexplained. The characters had reasons why they felt they had reached their last straw with Sonny. They talked about it multiple times. One may not have liked the explanation or thought it was sufficient, but there were reasons. And to me, the reasoning (while yes, odd that multiple characters were having this change of heart at the same time) was as legitimate as some of these characters EVER being okay or confidants or friends or whatever with Sonny in the first place. But when a mob boss and his moll and enforcer are the center of a show, I guess character compromises are made so all the characters could function and the trio’s place on the show would not be compromised. This turn against Sonny was just taking characters that legitimately would have an issue with a mob boss, actually having issues with a mob boss. It was a resetting of the paradigm of the show. And saying all that, the show had already had an ‘out’ in place, with a lot of Sonny’s most recent actions that led to the ‘straws that broke the camel’s back’ being under the umbrella of his messed with meds. There was a longer term story in place here that was playing out that for me, was at least changing things up and bringing new conversations to the fore. Apparently, I was in the minority and people weren’t willing to see the story play out.
But it’s the lack of consistency that’s killing GH right now. If the likes of Laura and Anna are turning against a long time family friend (Sonny) then why befriend and excuse a serial killer, ( Heather) who was a sociopath since she first appeared on the canvas and long before her hip replacement surgery? If Anna has to distance herself from Sonny due to professional conflict, then why is she pals with a criminal( Jason)? And don’t get me started on Laura calling Esme, who tormented her grandsons, sweetheart. Again, it’s the lack of consistency. Just horrible writing. Even the wedding was dull, and the ten year old singing faintly an extended version of the Kars4Kids song off key just punctuated the wedding with a tone of listlessness that seemed to say,” We give up.”
Exactly. You can’t suddenly decide that Sonny is the worst person in the world while nominating the likes of Heather or Cyrus for sainthood at the exact same time. Or Esme for that matter… though at least she made a genuine attempt at redeeming herself… but only because she had amnesia and couldn’t remember she was supposed to be the perfect genetic offspring of Heather & Ryan.
Wasn’t really a big fan of Violet’s song either, but the way this entire week long wedding played out, I have a feeling that this “event” was the replacement for the Nurses Ball this year. Which is probably a good thing, because it’s hard to imagine the Nurses Ball going on wiithout Bobbie or Epiphany anyway.
Satan, all I can say is if head to your neck of the woods after I pass, they will be blasting that child’s sound on surround sound 24/7.
It certainly wasn’t unexplained; it was just stupid that all of a sudden, the entire town apparently came to the same revelation after decades.
I’m sure the real problem was that Sonny must be the hero, always, and it’s just not allowable to have regular cast members against him.
I know when new head writers become a part of a show, there will be changes. But in the past few months, I have had whiplash from the abrupt changes in the show, So have been good, others out of character. The best has been the changes in Tracy. The Ava/Sonny storyline has me scratching my head. Sonny has no redeeming qualities, the focus on Pikeman has been going on way too long, the numbers of career changes has been too much. I hope the show makes Drew and Nina more likable and that every new man in the show doesn’t have to go through Carly. Give Anna, Ava, Lois and Jordan some love. Make John more dimensional. Who shot Austin? Lastly, I don’t want to see anyone lose their jobs, but the cast is too big.
Character changes have been much too dramatic. Have not liked the direction of the show in the last few months. The cast is big but in the past it has been used well. Where is Frank?
Frank is a production producer, he’s not in charge of the writing or stories. I’m so sick of reading Frank comes up with stories, he does not. Patrick didn’t work because he was too combative, didn’t communicate wit his staff and made the tone misogynistic towards women. The cast & producers had enough, and that is the real story despite all the fans thinking they know the truth.
Well said
I agree with a lot of what your wrote. I love GH and will stick with it through almost anything. But I was watching it the other day and it really felt like the writers were trying to reinvent the show while keeping most of the cast the same. The changes in attitudes seemed like they were changing the course of the Queen Mary in five seconds. And all the sudden career moves left me wondering who would still be working at the hospital. I understand wanting to “correct” or “change course” on some of the stories or characters but this has been too fast and too much. Can’t help but wonder if that has led to the downturn in ratings as well as the change in writers. God save the show!
The new writing has bern worse. Hope improvement coming
I was not a fan, found myself bored with stuff that’s been airing and how every character overnight was having career changes, its like they wanted to change everything the last team did overnight, it wasn’t flowing naturally, their stuff its just plain boring, even Jason’s return was boring after they took over. now I’m not saying the previous head writers were awesome they had their flaws but I never was bored.
They never gave him a chance. Many of us were looking forward to an improvement in the writing with chracter driven stories. Now we’re stuck with that misogynist Elizabeth Korte, who loves to alter characters by abandoning and rewriting their history. We had high hopes and we were looking forward to Patrick’s sharp writing injecting new life into this soap which has been suffering from abysmal ratings- they even blew Jason’s return. Now with Korte at the helm of the writing, it will only get worse. It feels like they are trying to get GH cancelled.
Rewriting the characters history THE WORST mistake writers can make. I’m still nauseous about destroying Nikolas’s training as a Cassidine to make him dim. The complete & implausible dulling of Sam. Throwing as away Billy Miller.
We like soaps BECAUSE of the continuity. We’ve in known these characters most of our lives. Blowing that up is poison.
The writing was horrible Harry. Complete character assassinations. Anna didn’t even seem like Anna anymore. Laura and Anna, after thirty years, at the same time decide it’s time to go after, big, bad, Sonny? And the reason? He went after an “old man. (Cyrus). LOL; it was a parody! Spinelli and Jason not seeing each other; no mention of Spinelli from Jason? Ned turning his back on Jason instead of embracing him? Every character changing their job? Willow no longer a nurse, Dante wanted to quit the force, Joss changed her mind about med school, Carly got her hotel back, Sasha is suddenly hired help, and Drew might now be a politician. All within a week I think for everyone to have a life changing decision…And then the RIDICULOUS line from Jason that he’s helping Carly because she’s “innocent,” he and Sonny brought her into that life? I wanted to VOMIT!
Sigh. The only thing I found intriguing about the writing was a possible Nina/Drew relationship. They’re reminiscent of Carly and AJ; animosity/hatred coupled with attraction. Unlike that push/pull that went on whenever AJ was back, these two had the potential to evolve, and it seems like the writers are testing out a Drew/Jordan and a Drew/Nina. So much more story potential for Drew/Nina. But the show is intent on pushing interracial relationships instead of even testing her with the new black cop in town who might be perfect for Jordan. Will he wind up with Anna? Nina? Here’s hoping Jagger doesn’t wind up with Carly. Oh, and the possible Brick/Jordan thing was cringe-worthy. He’s just way too sleazy. And the way he struts around like he’s some sort of ladies man; he reminds me of when George Jefferson hilariously tried to be cool…except George was played for laughs. We’re supposed to take Brick seriously…
Total overkill! The changes should have been gradual and some not at all – the career changes for Wilow, Dex, Drew ans Sasha (that one makes no sense!) I find it interesting they call Cyrus and old man. Jeff Kobe does not strike me as an “old man.” GH is a good show with an excellent cast. They need to find someone who will respect the history of show and utilize the actors they have. Oh, and it is time for manic Sonny to go!
Agree; though not about Sonny. I’ve despised him for decades, lol, particularly for what he did to AJ (AJ was a fav or mine. I never got over (soapily speaking 😉 ) the two of them taking Michael from him for life. Still, I would feel the absence of Sonny and we’ve lost enough vets and legacy characters. You may get your wish though, Maurice said quite a few times that he plans on leaving GH “sooner rather than later” as he’s done with soaps and wants to devote full time to his State of Mind podcast.
I didn’t mean get rid of Maurice Benard, but the messing with his meds storyline. I also don’t like that they made Valentin a villian. I was sure at some point they would have restored the Val/Anna storyline, but I guess not. I am liking the Drew and Nina pairing. A very good fit! Some characters are no longer needed: Sasha, Heather and Cody. But, he is still needed for the long over due reveal that he is Mac’s son.
You are correct! I blame Korte for blowing Jason’s return storyline and some of the other character assassinations like with Laura.
They shouldndemote her and bring back Ron Carlivaty or someone new.
I have long heard rumors that daytime dramas cost a lot more than game shows or talk shows and that ABC would much rather the ratings drop so that it can be canceled. I guess they could be trying.
GH is in trouble if they can’t find a great daytime writing team. Ratings already falling to below 2M viewers. GL was cancelled when it fell that low. Port Charles may slumber through the summer. Guess I will hang out with B&B!
They had a great writing team and they got rid of them years ago to bring in the failed OLTL writers I watched this show for over 30 years I hardly watch it anymore maybe 2 times a week that’s all that’s needed though. What a mistake they did at least Elizabeth Korte will be writing maybe she can undo this mess she was Guzas partner
But Korte has been working as the co-head writer with Patrick. She is the main writer responsible for the Jason storyline, which has been a disappointment, slow and uneventful. I thought we would see a new exciting storyline and the end to this never ending Pikeman story, but it seems like they are dragging it on even longer.
I have not been impressed with her so far. At this point maybe they need to get Bob Guza back or Ron Carlivaty back.
I’ve said before that they need to bring Bob Guza back to save GH. Unfortunately he just lost his wife so coming out of retirement to write again is probably the last thing on his mind.
This is not a good look at all for GH, to have a revolving door at the head writer position. It’s not a good look for Frank Valentini, either. This makes it look like there is turmoil behind the scenes. I don’t know what the real story is, but hiring back Chris Van Etten after letting him go in January is very bizarre, as is Patrick Mulcahey being gone with his material only airing for only 2 months, whether he was fired or chose to leave on his own.
I’ve stuck up for Frank for years when others would talk about him needing to go. But I’ve come around to the idea that GH needs a major shake up starting from the top. Frank has run the show for 12 years, and I think he’s done a lot of great things and I know he’s known for getting the most out of a limited budget, but I think he’s gotten too complacent, and that’s reflected in the product we see on the air at the moment.
They need someone new to come in with a fresh perspective on the show. And some new writers from the outside, not recycling the same people over and over, or promoting someone that has been with the show for 30 years like Korte. They had someone with a somewhat fresh perspective in Mulcahey, since he hadn’t been with the show in 25 years. But that obviously didn’t work out.
Been a fan for 30+ years, I watch every day, and I always will. But what they’re doing right now isn’t working. The show is a mess in front of and behind the camera. And for the first time in a while, I’m worried about the future of GH.
Mulchaey didn’t have a “fresh perspective.” He was messing with history and characters. Not one thing about the show felt familiar to me, not characters I’ve “known” on and off for thirty years. It’s one thing to do new stories, it’s another to rewrite characters and history. The team before him was too guilty of that too; the writing for Nikolas and Spencer was horrid; ruined. Nikolas was a great father to Spencer when he was a kid. Spencer was always his priority; Nikolas would have died for him. Suddenly adult Spencer comes back a lunatic, screaming three quarters of his scenes, stalking Ava, hating his father, and wanting to make sure Ace never grows up feeling unloved like he did. What a crock! Spencer’s entire revenge on Ava was based on nothing, and Nikolas supposedly letting Spencer think he was dead was way out of character…
But then we get to his “new” writer and he has everyone wanting to change their jobs and Ned ignoring Jason’s return and Laura and Anna, after decades of friendship, simultaneously want to bring Sonny down. To top it off they looked rabid when they spoke to him. The entire writing was upside down; I felt like I was watching a horrible parody of GH a “what if” show in which all the characters were possessed by different personalities….
Agree. Frank Valentini needs to go first.
As you pointed Mulcahey hadn’t been with the show in 25 years and maybe that was the mistake in that in 25 years characters change and most of the characters that were on GH 25 years ago aren’t on there now.
The only reason I semi-migrated back to General Hospital was because of Patrick Mulchaey.
Now that he’s out…so am I.
It will be more-of-the same. Sad.
I am wondering why ? What has he written prior
Previous news from this site: Mulcahey previous tenures with GH were starting in 1996 as a script writer, and then from 1998-1999 as an associate head writer and breakdown writer. Having a storied career in the soaps, Patrick has written for Search for Tomorrow, Texas, Guiding Light, Santa Barbara and The Bold and the Beautiful. So I think that GH viewers deserve an explanation for another shakeup of writers. What the heck is going on?
Google is a great search engine. Use it.
I did the same. Admittedly, the last decade + (maybe two), I’ve been an in-and-out GH viewer. I tried the previous writing team a couple of times and got very tired of stories that NEVER seemed to end, and when they did, it was anti-climatic at best (and really, often turned out to be just a sneaky transition to another chapter in the same story). When I heard Patrick was heading over, I came back and definitely noticed his influence in the scenes – better, richer, actual conversations with meat and insight into characters. His writing comes from the days when even seemingly ‘filler’ scenes were important to character and the building of a story. Quiet, every day moments, conversations, and interactions can make stories deeper and more emotionally impactful, and build to something larger down the road. But I’m not actually sure today’s audience appreciates that as much. Instant gratification, action, fast pace, attention grabbing – I think that’s what the majority of viewers want these days, which really isn’t really that conducive with five-day a week, one-hour serial storytelling. I think that’s a major part of why daytime serials are on their death bed – this format, this genre of storytelling just doesn’t reflect nor appeal to the majority of potential viewers.
I truly don’t know what you were watching. All I saw was Sonny getting attached to Ava, Ava betraying Nina, Drew and Nina having hate sex, Anna and Laura looking like they had twin lobotomies as they both robotically decided after decades to turn rabid on Sonny and “get him.” Nina still looked like a deer in the headlights whenever Willow walks into the room, is still nauseatingly apologizing to Carly or seeming to seek her approval, Ned ignore Jason’s return, Jason and Spinelli didn’t even see each other until the wedding…and everyone wanted to quite their job. Oh, and Laura wants to free a serial killer and Joss goes from being cujo Jr to candy striper flirting with Dex…
I’ve hated every minute of this writing…until the wedding. It was visually stunning and very well done, except for the most ridiculous omissions. Not only was Chase’s mother not there, she wasn’t even mentioned. And Sasha, who is good friends with Brook Lynn and very close friends with Chase, didn’t go to the wedding because she and the other “hired help” were too busy working. I mean, really? The Quartermaines couldn’t afford a caterer? Sasha misses both her good friends wedding to cook for it? Too dumb…
With that said, I enjoyed the rest of it so who knows, maybe the show would’ve righted itself after he turned it upside down…and landed somewhere in a better place.
That sure didn’t take long (as several of us on here predicted).
I’m not sure what to think (especially since we don’t really know very much about what happened). I had high hopes; I agree with a number of commenters who said what we’ve seen on the screen hasn’t exactly been compelling, and I too have found some of the storyline choices rather odd. What went wrong? Maybe he and Korte were not a good mix? Maybe TPTB hired him saying they’d listen to him about X, Y, and Z and then once he was in the job, did exactly the opposite of what they said they’d do and he walked?
I suppose one significant clue will emerge once Korte’s solo work as HW airs. If things start getting better, then I’d go with the bad mix idea. If they continue to be as uninspiring as they’ve been or (heaven forbid) get worse, then I guess it will be logical to conclude his vision clashed with TPTBs’ and either he walked or they axed him.
It’s too bad; as I said, I had high hopes. But at the same time, how much can a writer (ANY writer) do for a show that insists on having the mob (or at least The Good Mobster) drive so much of the story? I get that Sonny, Carly, and Jason are very popular characters, but the show should have found a way by now to eliminate the mob element and “mainstream” them. Yes, it would have to involve a flagrant disregard for the show’s history (or at least IGNORING a good bit of it), but it’s not as though this show hasn’t done a fair amount of that through the years anyway.
A hot mess. Just have Mickey and Minnie head write the show.
Being the head writer sounds like a thankless job and fans won’t be pleased no matter who’s in that position.
I was not positive before about this show – but now reading all these comments I am now really depressed. Is there a chance we get some great stories? Some disasters and drama? What happened to May’s Sweeps month? So far we got one cliffhanger Friday and not really a cliffhanger.
I am guessing the best they will do to bring Mac back is to have him trip when he steps off the plane – instead of a great juicy story where he gets kidnapped in a foreign country. He’ll just come into Cody’s barn and announce “Hi I’m back?”
I hate current story line with Sonny being so violent and pushing all those who care about him away. I did not care for the Mike story but this is worse. Hopefully, the new writing team can figure out better story lines for Sonny and the other citizens of Port Charles.
I’ve had a change of heart. After feeling like GH had become upsidedown world, where many of the characters were walking around in the same bodies but with different personalities, who turned on Sonny complete with a cold, hostile, attitude to his face, where almost everyone decided to change jobs…I now think GH is on fire! For me, the last two weeks are the best the show has been in a decade. More time for other characters, heartfelt, meaningful conversations, the banter between Alexis and Diane is back, the scene with Lois and Ned was fantastic…and the flow from scene to scenes has been excellent. It’s no longer same old/same old, and there’s a richness and character development. I’m absolutely loving it and I’m also now completely disappointed that Patrick’s been fired if he was the one who’s brought these great changes to the feel of the show. Van Etten coming back is a horror; he’s half of the team who thought running the Carly/Nina war for two years, having Carly skip through every rotten thing she did to Nina and was “dearly loved” by Willow, while we had to sit through endless Nina bashing, was somehow entertaining, as was an endless train of fatal diseases. UGH! Someone get on the phone to Valentini and tell him to undo Patrick’s firing. I admit I hated the first few weeks of the new writing; it was almost absurd with all the changes. But sometimes if you hang in there it’s worth it. It was worth it. We cannot go back to same old/same old.
