Days Of Our Lives
RATINGS: DAYS Has Good Week With The Return Of Eileen Davidson!

Courtesy/NBC
The ratings are out for the week of July 28th through August 1st, and it was NBC’s Days of our Lives which was the only soap to show gains in total viewers, and of course, that times out with the on-screen return of Daytime Emmy winner Eileen Davidson as Kristen DiMera! Davidson’s story began the other week with Kristen kidnapping Daniel (Shawn Christian) and it has been revealing itself from there.
DAYS was also up in the key demographics: Women 18-49 (+73K, the most gain of any soap), Women 18-34 (+6K, the only soap to show gains) and Women 25-54 (+81K, the most of any soap, and only GH also showed gains in this demo category).
On the minus side of the ratings: it was The Young and the Restless who lost the most total viewers for the ratings period with -140,000, followed by The Bold and the Beautiful which lost -66,000, and then General Hospital which lost only -14,000. DAYS still remains in fourth place among all network soaps even though they picked up viewers with the return of Davidson. Question is: Will they be able to sustain and add more viewers and keep them during and after Davidson’s stint? You can view the entire ratings courtesy of SON here.
Total Viewers
1. Y&R 4,381,000 (-140,000/-311,000)
2. B&B 3,447,000 (-66,000/-150,000)
3. GH 2,868,000 (-14,000/+427,000)
4. DAYS 2,356,000 (+70,000/-100,000)
Now it’s time for you to be our Soap Opera Programming Executive Armchair Quarterback! Tell us: What is working on your favorite soap? What would you change or fix? How would you go about it, if so? Did you tune-in to DAYS to watch the return of Kristen DiMera? Let us know!
It looks like Daniel and Kristen will become involved. Too much tension.
When Kristen was in that chair with her legs crossed i actually thought she was going to give Danial a ‘Basic Instinct’ moment if you know what i mean?…lol…then when they were fighting in that storage room i thought they were going to start making out…lol…got so hot i had to run outside and buy me a popcycle from the Ice Cream Man…lol…I wish Days pulled a shocking twist and had Dullnial working with the Dimeras!!!
Lol, jimh. I love your comments. They seem to come so naturally, I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who got that vibe. As yourself, I really thought they were going to go at it. They were face to face, breath to breath., ..almost scandalous…lol…I actually covered my 2-month old’s eyes….lol….and, I wanted them to kiss…passionately…lol….what’s wrong with me? Lol
Lol ..I thought she was going to vomit split pea soup all over his face when they were fighting in the storage room..She just oozes sexual chemistry with any actor she is involved with, even Marlena!
way too funny : Jimh… ceecee…Omar
Eileen Davidson… has in her arsenal… a bag of tricks… to overthrow… our zeal…. penchant… drive for…. whet
LOL
time to park
LOL : Omar “…even Marlena”
in one of the last SOD issues…. Deidre Hall herself said : Eileen Davidson fascinates
“what more needs to be said”
if she needs to know any thing…. it’s on DAYS that she’ll soldify her career… and it’s DAYS that will feature …. the one and only… Eileen Davidson
Lol, excellent post, Omar. She does exude sexuality, doesn’t she? I even sense it, and I’m a girl.
There is so much going on at DAYS right now that Eileen is just the delicious frosting on the cake. Just keep telling the stories the way that you are DAYS and you will remain my fav!
Days is simply the best soap it is a treat to watch every day!
Y&R losing 140,000 viewers in a week is no big deal. They are consistently in the range of 4.5 million viewers, that is their audience, just like B&B is in the 3.5 million range on average. A few thousand here and there, in Y&R’s case accounting for about -3% in a week is not any concern. Y&R is also number one in all the demos and is now beating GH in 18-34 as well.
GH is hanging in with 2.8-2.9 million total viewers. But their demos are slipping. Number three in 18-49 and 25-54 and now number two in 18-34 with a pretty significant decrease in actual viewers from when they were just recently number one, a 20% decrease and higher.
Given GH’s recent performance in younger demos, maybe the philosophy of quick scenes, stories with no depth, tons of plot holes, OTT camp and crude one liners really isn’t the formula to attract a younger audience after all.
Well, next round will reflect Robin’s return. The pattern is usually a stunt to boost ratings every few months, we’ll see next week if it worked.
You are exactly right. Y and R is just maintaining its audience along with B and B. No big deal there. GH is up from last year. As long Gh is 2.6 or higher, no reason to worry. I agree about the demos. They have been low for the last couple of weeks and I think the over focus and Nina and the Maxie storyline are just not bringing in younger viewers along with what you said.
I agree with almost everything you are saying except for the stunt part about Robin…sure some diehard Robin fans will tune in just to see her but i dont considered her returns a stunt to add ratings every few months even if they do rise…Kim, for the 100th time, only agreed to appear so often because of her other career…directing…i doubt tptb say the ratings are down so lets bring in Robin…her scenes were filmed months ago and the ratings have gone up and down without her…if she was on full time i sincerly doubt the ratings would stay consistent…there are other actors on this show who are not shown enough and others shown too often plus other stories that could also contribute to the shows ups and downs…im like you i want and know there could be a better GH…the problem is the writing!!!
Jimh- The reason I refer to Robin as a stunt is because I do think they plan her appearances every few months in the hopes that whatever the ratings are at the time, they will get some kind of spike. And they usually do. I think to some extent that is a result of KMC fans tuning in to see her, but also because it means that a stagnant story will be moved forward. I agree that if she were on full time the ratings probably wouldn’t stay consistently up. That would be a result of two things. One actor or actress is not enough for any show and also, if she were on full time, whatever story she was involved in would have its drag periods and she would be MIA at times like almost everyone else due to the bloated cast and uneven pacing of the show.
Ultimately, the only way for the show to really maintain strong ratings would be, as you point out, for the writing to improve, the screen time for characters to be more balanced and for beloved veteran characters to have real stories. I just don’t see the the 4 out of 5 day Nina show working.
I was struck by today’s show. I thought it was a pretty bad episode, unfortunately that’s my take just about every day because the one constant is the lack of quality writing.
But I was struck when Felicia was on. Here you have an iconic GH character, half of a once huge and legendary supercouple, a character that on her own has so much history and back story, an actress who can do drama and comedy, and by any standard, a stunningly beautiful woman, IMO, the most beautiful woman on the show, and she is basically relegated to a day player while we suffer day after day through Nina, a character that means nothing to me, wheeling around town, acting like a nut and chewing the scenery. What a complete waste.
I do understand what you are saying and after thinking it over it does seem a bit like stunt casting…Felicia, Mac, Duke, Anna, Lucy, Scott, Bobbie and especially Monica are all iconic characters and deserve better…so does the audience!!!
Days really is a great soap! There are so many good stories that keep me tuning in everyday. I really look forward to it! GH is losing me with the mob focus.
I’m a new Days viewer and am enjoying all the current story lines. I am looking forward to getting to know Kristen. Obviously, she’s crazy as they come. I so hope Daniel gets over himself and makes up with Jennifer. That Sami is absolutely out of control and I hope her son, Will, tells all and succeeds in stopping her wrath or at least slowing her down. Kassie DePaiva has fit in perfectly and she’s a trump as Eve. My heart is just broken for poor Eric. I really like him. I can’t wait to see what they are going to do with Clyde. James Read is a super actor and if they write something really good, he’ll do a fantastic job. Go DAYS!!!!!!
Crazy Kristen will want to make Theresa pay for marrying Brady…which will turn Eve and Kristen into battling bitches!!!
My mind boggles, how is Y&R always number one? I watched it for two months thinking well since there are only four soaps left I would give them all a shot over summer break. Y&R consistently put me to sleep. Its music, characters, and story lines seem to never actually go anywhere. #DAYS #DOOL has been my favorite for 18 years, the only area Days is lacking in is the budget department. I will admit that every other soap has far better sets. GH has actually gotten me hooked I love love love it!!!! B&B is ok sometimes I like it if there is a location shoot 🙂
Also if you go off facebook it kinda shows you how dated Nielson is when it comes to knowing actual viewers, according to facebook days and gh has 2.2 million likes or followers where both B&B and Y&R are not even at a million ? The nielson ratings are not only flawed but also rigged it would appear.
Social media skews much younger. It’s a known fact that CBS has a much older audience.
My Mother for example, doesn’t even have a computer, smart phone, and has NEVER been on Facebook and Twitter. However she’s watched YR for over 20 years.
Nielsen could be rigged, I guess, but then you’d have to rule out GH’s ratings wins in the early and mid 80’s when they were number one for about 8 years running.
I’m a relatively new viewer and DAYS has me fairly hooked, even though some storylines seem to move at a turtle’s pace.
As for Eric, after all his sanctimonious rhetoric about returning to the Priesthood, he declined to accept his reinstatment. I guess most of us saw that coming – but he should either get together with Nicole or give it a rest already, geez.
I like Kassie’s interpretation of Eve but it’s a little one-dimensional ~ she needs to eventually show some layers to the character – what made her this way, why is she so self-centered, why does she hit on every guy in Salem, etc.
The residents of Salem seem to be either complete Saints (Jennifer) or utterly
contemptable (Eve, Theresa) and few seem to be a combination of both at least among the females in town.
With Eve, you kind of have to know her backstory, which of course played out in the late ’80s and early ’90s, when you weren’t a viewer. It would be nice if viewers were reminded more of how she grew into the person she is today.
Days has always been black and white with how people view one another. For as much as Marlena is bugging me with the judgment right now, I could easily remember Martha Madison playing Belle was even worse with the self-righteous stuff, LOL! I’d say the most fleshed-out younger female characters on right now are Sami and Nicole, but of course they’ve been on for over 15 years and we know everything about them.
Theresa is getting to the point where I’m not sure she can be redeemed, but as Maggie reminded Eve earlier on, Eve did run down Sarah with her car and she’s been “kind of” redeemed, as in she’s not a complete pariah…

I’ve been loving Kristen’s return, I just wish they didn’t waste so much time with her and uninteresting Daniel. Eileen is a phenomenal actress and will be great interacting with Brady, Marlena, and other core characters. I would also like to think that some of the other good storylines are bringing in more viewers. One of my favorites recently has been the scenes with Eve and Theresa. Days has definitely been on fire lately and hopefully they can keep this up
thank you steeeeeven
I thought the same thing… what’s with all this time with just daniel?
Eve and Theresa are so fresh… so alive… so incumbent upon them to let it all out… enliven and turn BIG
LOL
I love Eve and Theresa… as the Donovan sisters! hey…. !
I hope Kristen is stirring the pot… BIG… so that ALL of Salem… reels… with DiMera mystique
I LOVE DAYS of OUR Lives
just bring me Justin/Addriene/Kayla/Tad/Anne
Yes agreed Patrick! I really wished Kristen would have kidnapped a more interesting character. Maybe even Adrienne or Sonny to try and get close to Brady. Oh well though we’ll have fun seeing her interact with all of the other Salemites this week!
Well, Daniel is tptb’s pet, don’t you know? ….their hero…be still my heart…lol
Okay; so Daniel was knocked down and out by some empty boxes. Let them do “it” and get it over with…lol
The tousled hair; the absolute look of defiance on her face at the police station; the pale hue to her features…Eileen/Kristen is still so incredibly gorgeous.
This must be “face the music/pay the piper” day.
Days needs to give Eileen whatever she wants so she can stay for a long while! They also need to stop recasting everyone, it gets confusing for the older people and I’m sorry but the previous actors were hotter to us younger folks.
They also really need to bring back the sense of paranormal whimsy that days used to have. I remember I started watching when Marlena got possessed by the devil and I kept watching for Vivian and Ivan’s antics and all of Celeste’s “Vizzzions” and oh my god do you remember how fun the show was when Laura would have her mental breaks? They took ALL of that away no wonder its ratings are so low, who wants to watch some hunky guy mope around all day being a drunk when some people actually have that in their real lives lol
Its meant to be fun, its meant to be fantasy.
I forgot to add but it kind of goes without saying I also LOVED Susan Banks and her “mean mean mean vampire” catch phrase.
I really thought Kristen was goin to get away! glad she is back.I can’t wait wait everyone will think about her tomorrow! She deserves to be in jail.Eric is going to freak so is Marlana.Love Days.
Kristen has actually made Daniel at bit more interesting— he used to be the bad boy dude sleeping his way through the ladies– he turned deadly dull when they elevated him to sainthood in order to crown him the new Tom Horton of Salem.
Right now, all soaps are having their annual summer slump– most stories are just setting things up for September and October to come to a head in November sweeps. It is good week just to maintain your core audience during the summer months.
But looking forward to Phyllis waking on Y&R– liking the new actress without even hearing her speak. Also looking forward to Shemar’s brief return. On B&B, I am seeing the birth of yet a new triangle– Ivy, Liam and Hope—
Days — can’t wait for Will’s story on Sami to come out– and the fall out from that.
GH– looking forward to return of Jason, or nuJason– and now that we had the little detour with Alice’s heart transplant, hoping we can get back to Q infighting for ELQ- and would love to see them have a Ned -Olivia romance
But until those stories develop- we will jus thave to endure the summer slump and hope for better days ahead when September rolls around
Very happy to have Kristen back in Salem. There is so much to love about Days right now. I am even enjoying the characters I love to hate (looking at you Jen & Abby).
I really don’t know how Y&R stays at number 1. I consider myself a Y&R fan and currently I find very little to keep me interested in that show. DOOL has the lowest budget and other production limitations, but seem to use their resources wisely. I never miss an ep. Hope it can keep the momentum going!
I sooo feel the same way, MB.

Monday on Entertainment Tonight, the second set of nominations for the 53rd annual Daytime Emmy Awards were announced which included the highly-coveted Outstanding Lead Performance in a Daytime Drama Series – Actress and Outstanding Daytime Talk Series.
ET followed suit after Extra announced the nominees, as previously reported, in the Outstanding Lead Performance in a Daytime Drama Series – Actor and Outstanding Daytime Talk Host.
Now, five leading ladies of the soaps are vying for the gold for Lead Actress and the category marked the first-ever nominations for CBS daytime’s Beyond the Gates when two actresses made the final cut. Only General Hospital is not represented among the actresses this year after Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis) took home the trophy last year.
