RATINGS: Days of our Lives & General Hospital Up In Key Demos!

Courtesy/NBC

Courtesy/NBC

The ratings were released for the week of August 4th-August 8th and two soaps; Days of our Lives and General Hospital posted gains in all three key women demographics, although while DAYS gained in total viewers, GH was the only soap among the network daytime dramas to show a minus in that column.

However, it was The Bold and the Beautiful that showed the most gains of any soap for the week with plus 67,000 total viewers. In the women’s 18-49 demo; GH gained +27,000 and DAYS gained +20,000 putting them in second and fourth place respectively in the category.

In the women’s 18-34 demo,  GH gained +16,000 while DAYS gained +12,000, and again both soaps remained in second and fourth in the category.  In the women’s 25-54  demo, GH gained +18,000 while DAYS gained +4,000. View the entire ratings picture via SON here.

As to some of the storylines for the ratings week, on DAYS: Sami’s (Alison Sweeney) revenge plans and the fallout from that, along with Eileen Davidson’s return storyline as Kristen DiMera, continued to bring in viewers.

And over at GH, it was the week that saw Kimberly McCullough return as Dr. Robin Scorpio Drake and Thaao Penghlis as Victor Cassadine, as we learned that Victor was behind having Patrick (Jason Thompson), Sabrina (Teresa Castillo) and Emma (Brooklyn Rae Silzer) run off the road that eventually claimed the life of baby Gabriel.  The fate of Jason Morgan and Patrick and Robin’s marriage were also hot topics.

Y&R had a shocker where Neil (Kristoff St.John) accidently electrocuted himself as Hilary (Mishael Morgan) and Devon (Bryton James) were about to expose to Neil their true feelings for each other!  And on B&B, it was the set up of the wedding week for Hope (Kim Matula) as she went to Paris, and Liam (Scott Clifton) was going to meet here there… and then you all know what happened this week!

Now it’s time for you to be our Soap Opera Programming Executive Armchair Quarterback! What is working on your favorite soaps?  What isn’t?  What storylines are holding your interest?  Which storylines are not?  What would you do to fix what you feel ails your soap, if anything?  Share your thoughts below!

I don’t care about the ratings..
they go up and down like a rollercoaster, always have and will.
Unless there is a million difference, no big deal ..
And the sponsors look for things in the rating outside of highest numbers etc..

I like my soap..
I do not care how many watch..
If I were the only viewer and enjoyed what I was watching that is all that would matter lol 🙂

Agree…soap ratings are always going up and down…now if they’d stay up and continue to rise that would be another story!!!

Y and R has become so fractured and unrelatable that I now PVR and start watching 20 minutes in so that I can fast forward through most if it. The loss of Billy Miller has rendered Amelia Heinke impotent to perform because she clearly has no chemistry, and appears no desire to build chemistry, with either the newest Billy or Ben. Not her fault. I’m sure the upheaval has been difficult. The winters clan has lost its luster save for Cane and Devon. The writing is horrendous. The direction leaves Lily looking like a mess that cant act, but I… Read more »

I agree with you but I really miss the good old days when Y&R was fast paced and well written. It’s sad that Dylan has become unlikeable and the actress playing Kelly overacts to the point that I now FF her scenes! Really missing Katherine !!!

Kelly?
There is no longer a Kelly..
We now have Dixie Cooney from AMC , total Dixie..

As much as I rag on B&B and Brad Bell’s obsession with triangles that never end– what happened last week was classic soap– the will he or will he not reach his lady love in time or lose her forever is one the best plots on the soaps. My favorite was the twist AW did, when it was Jake waiting for Vicky in the playground, to find out if she chose him or Shane. And this one, who could fault them, a romantic location, real Paris and not just a studio shot. A nasty villianness who diverts the hero from… Read more »

I really dont want another baby story but on Days this would have added great drama had Kristen returned with child claiming the kid was Bradys but is actually Erics…can imagined Marlena’s shocked reaction finding out one of her grandchildren is from her no.1 enemy…of course she has grandkids that are E.J.s but this would be different because of the circumstances…then there is Erics reaction…could he accept and love this child…i say yes…it would be a struggle at first but i think Nicole would be some help…Eric would be reluctant at first…but Nicole would take it one step at a… Read more »

I liked all of GH but really want to see more Fluke stuff, along with the Jason stuff. Levi was by far the best thing of all. The whole reveal finally made everything from that story awesome and can’t miss. The Nina stuff is boring unless we can bust her already. Y&R needs to have more Mariah and Ward stuff with less Summer and Austin lovey dovey. Days is good everywhere. B&B you can never take seriously. When in real life does someone have someone one week then the next week say they love someone else, then month later go… Read more »

Storylines/characters I like on GH: Britt and Nicholas, Britt and Spencer, Fluke, all the Quartermaines (I include Michael as a Q), the gay trio of Felix-Brad-Lucas, Maxie-Levi-Nathan, Maxie’s parents, Dr. O, Patrick and Sabrina,Alexis and Julian, Ava, and Liz.

Can’t stand Sonny, most of the other Corinthos, Kiki, Lulu and Dante, or Franco.

Once again, she’s all over EJ about brother Eric spiral from priesthood… blaming EJ… when EJ clearly told Sami… he would have nothing to do with Kristen. I completely agree; see my comment below. The show has no balance with so many boring, new, useless characters being added. A week of a boring Aztec jewelry heist wedding was a total waste of air-time and could have been settled within one episode. Tired of Dante and nu-Lulu having the same, old boring conversation about whether to have another baby. Tired of the Sam show, too and her monotone. I’m just tired of it all! It’s been nice not seeing Kiki. That’s been a blessing!

I know. Right!? Firstly, this sudden illness which befell Alice puzzles me. I’m still not sure of its purpose….perhaps it will become clear. Maybe I missed that episode. But, what boggles my mind more is Morgan’s loyalty to Alice….didn’t realize they were that close. I must have missed more than one episode for failing to see that loving relationship. He’s not even a Quartermaine.
I should not complain…instead I should be grateful I can still tune in and watch when I am able. But, yeah, I would like to obliterate Sonny, Levi and Sam the most.

CeeCee….Morgan became quite fond of Alice during his brief marriage to Kiki (who thought she was a Quartermaine at the time…) when they were holing up at the Q mansion….first in-house and later at the boathouse on the property that he decorated as their little love nest. Whenever “Mr. Morgan” needed anything, Alice was always happy to oblige….she was almost like his guardian angel, so he has since been forever grateful. Even when he often behaved like a spoiled brat, he always respected and appreciated Ms. Gunderson for her helpful assistance. The fact he initially recognized her as “The Dominator”… Read more »

Yes, CeeCee, it’s amazing how mutual cases of insanity can provide such sparks…so much for opposites attracting! Additionally, who would have ever “thunk” that Franco would actually be the more stable one in a relationship? DOOL has so much more balance than GH. I’m very disappointed in GH. I can’t keep track of the storylines because there are too many recurring, useless characters and ridiculous storylines (Aztec jewel heist, unfreezing corpses) that I forget where each story left off when it is picked up again. I’d much rather see the core, historic characters, friendships, new relationships. romance, and cliff-hanger Fridays.

Omar, I think this whole phenomenon of Will exposing his innermost feelings and angst for his mother in writing is merely a ploy to herald Abby’s re-entrance as the victim of Sami’s machinations. Sami is leaving…..Abbi is staying. Therefore, her I-am-a-good-girl, pure and innocent image needs to be prepped, polished and redeemed. We have already gleaned some of her childlike attitude during her conversation with Clyde….all wide-eyed and mouth-agape in surprise to his underlying “threats”. It is obvious, at least to me, that Sami has to exit as the bad guy…the town’s paraya . Well, that’s one way of exiting.… Read more »

Distribution? That’s what Clyde said to Kate. He wants to “employ” Stefano’s unsavory henchmen to distribute what? Illegal drugs? …..black market? What I’m writing is the truth…I have always liked the storyline with Jordan and then Ben and finally Clyde. So, Nina is planning to ‘get’ a baby, one way or another. What are the chances she will either sleep with Franco, get artificially inseminated or just help herself to Ava’s baby? Of course, she will fake a pregnancy. And, most importantly, every devilish , sinister and misguided scheme she employs, will make perfect sense to her. The voices in her head will justify every move she makes. Another baby plot…yippee!!

Days Of Our Lives

DAYS Wally Kurth Delivers ‘The Power Performance of the Week’

Mark our words! Next year, Days of our Lives Wally Kurth (Justin Kiriakis) will once again be nominated for a Daytime Emmy for this week’s emotional and deeply-touching work on key episodes of the NBC daytime drama series.

As viewers saw, this was to be the happy nuptials of Justin and Kayla (Mary Beth Evans), who found love again after losing the previous loves of their lives.  They were dear friends to begin with, who through a set of horrific circumstances, found comfort with one another which eventually turned to love.

Photo: JPi

Problem was; Justin overheard Jennifer (Melissa Reeves) and Hope (Kristian Alfonso) before the ceremony discussing Steve’s (Stephen Nichols) feelings for Kayla and that he wants her back; something Kayla is unaware of.  So what will he do?  The noble thing and tell her the truth, or keep it to himself and marry her anyway?

As the Intel of what he learned weighed heavier and heavier on Justin, in the most dramatic of moments (when he was to say his “I do’s”), Justin stopped the ceremony and bared all to Kayla: that Steve wants her back and how Steve saw him propose to her and that is why he backed off.  Armed with the knowledge and that her friends and family kept it from her, Kayla does not know what to do.  Justin helps made it easy and clear for her when he questions her … if they would be standing here getting married, if Steve had told her his true feelings before Justin proposed to her?

Justin goes on to say to Kayla that maybe she has been avoiding her true feelings for Steve, because she did not want to hurt him.  Then Justin tells Kayla that he visited his late wife Adrienne’s (Judi Evans) grave, and told her that if things were different, and if she was alive they would still be married, and Kayla would be their dear, dear friend.

Photo: JPI

With seeing the look on Kayla’s eyes, Justin knows she loves Steve.  Heartbroken, but caught in an untenable situation, Justin tells Kayla he is happy for her.  Kayla wraps her arms around Justin as they both cry.  Kayla says she never wanted to hurt him, and when Wally as Justin says, “I know, honey,” it was one of the most honest and ten-hankie moments of the entire scenario.   Justin kisses her, tells the guests there will be no wedding today, and exits the Kiriakis mansion.

The emotional drama continues in the aftermath as Justin is at Kayla’s apartment boxing up all of his belongings and tears up recalling their nights together listening to jazz and cooking dinner.  Sonny (Freddie Smith) finds his dad, and tells him he did the noble thing and that time will heal all wounds, but after Sonny leaves, Justin breaks down a bit further before exiting Kayla’s for good.

And if that was not enough, Justin goes back to Adrienne’s gravesite to update her on the wedding that did not happen.   He talks to her that he understands Kayla and Steve’s deep and enduring love, which was just like theirs was.  Next, Justin thinks he is seeing Adrienne, when none other than Bonnie Lockhart (Judi Evans) reveals she is back in Salem – talk about kicking a guy when he is down!

Photo: JPI

Throughout this entire saga, moment to moment, Kurth delivered raw, genuine, adult emotions, in a very complex adult story and relationship.   In fact, the cast and crew thought so, too!  When Wally as Justin told Kayla that he can’t marry her and the speech that followed and his exit from the mansion that followed, all those on set applauded for him.  His work was that moving.   Wally was ably assisted throughout by the outstanding work of Mary Beth Evans in these scenes.

2020, while a difficult year for everyone thus far, has been a particular great year for Kurth on Days; as over the last six months he has really had a chance to shine in this story.  So for all of these reasons and more, Michael Fairman TV gives the “Power Performance of the Week” kudos to Wally Kurth.

Did you love Wally’s performance this week on Days? Did you reach for the hankies? Share your thoughts via the comment section below.

DAYS Wally Kurth, Mary Beth Evans & Chandler Massey Take You Behind the Scenes of Kayla and Justin’s Wedding

On Wednesday’s heartbreaking episode of Days of our Lives, viewers saw just how the nuptials of Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) and Justin (Wally Kurth) eventually wound up!

Justin told Kayla that Steve (Stephen Nichols) still loves her, which put a halt to the proceedings and ended the romantic relationship between the two dear friends, who found love with one another following Adrienne’s (Judi Evans) death, and Kayla believing Steve did not want her back.

Now, The DOOL app has posted a rare behind the scenes view of the making of the wedding – with moments from the key scenes, rehearsals and interviews with the cast involved.

Chandler Massey (Will) weighs-in on Will’s debut as a wedding officiant and how that went south, while Mary Beth Evans and Wally Kurth shared why they loved this storyline so much.

Wally expresses how the last six months have been some of the best storylines of his soap career, while Mary Beth says that Justin and Kayla’s relationship was so adult and that in real life, both actors have known about people who fall in love with their dear friend, after losing their significant other whether it be by divorce, or death, or whatever the circumstance.

If you don’t already have the DOOL app on your mobile device to watch the segment, you can get more info to download here.

We will have more to say on the memorable performances at Michael Fairman TV later in the week.

So, what did you think of Kayla and Justin’s wedding and the fallout? Comment below.

DAYS Mary Beth Evans & Stephen Nichols with Guest Ron Carlivati Talk Stayla’s Greatest Hits & Approach To Scripts During COVID-19

This week is a pivotal one for Steve (Stephen Nichols) and Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) on Days of our Lives.  Will they be reunited once again?

To take a stroll down memory lane of reunions past, Mary Beth Evans along with her longtime on-screen scene partner and dear friend, Stephen Nichols, watched back key scenes from the history of Stayla and offered up a second viewing experience as they commented on the clips.

Later, Mary Beth and Stephen are joined by their surprise guest and it is revealed to be Days of our Lives head writer, Ron Carlivati!

In her tweet, Evans announced: “Since we’re evidently leading up to something big on #Days … Stephen Nichols and I thought we’d get together & watch some of our reunions from the past. And, we were lucky enough to have a very special guest join us for a chat! #patchandkaylaforever”

Mary Beth and Stephen then chat with Ron about what changes is he having to make to scripts in the reality we all live in now, the coronavirus pandemic, and how he is taking in to account upcoming safety protocols that will need to be adhered to when Days goes back into production.

As of now, from an article in Deadline last Friday the NBC daytime drama series is aiming for a September 1st restart.

Watch Mary Beth, Stephen and Ron in part one and part two and part three of their discussion below.

You can find that and more on Mary Beth’s PlankBlog You Tube channel as well.

Let us know in the comment section what you favorite Patch and Kayla reunion has been … and if you are looking forward to how Days will look when it goes back into production within safety guidelines for COVID-19?
