The ratings are out for the week of May 21-25th via Soap Opera Network, and it was not a bad week for the soaps, in fact a few soaps showed gains in total viewers, and in the key 18-49 female demo in total viewers too!  General Hospital did both, adding +29,000 eyeballs in total viewers which put the soap in third place among the four remaining daytime soaps and ahead of Days of our Lives.  GH also added viewers in the key 18-49 female demo with +8,000.

The Young and the Restless was the show that added the most viewers for the rating period getting back +33,000 and giving it still over 4.2 million viewers for the week.  However they lost viewers in the key 18-49 female demo for the week.

The Bold and the Beautiful actually added the most 18-49 female viewers for the ratings week up + 16,000, while slipping -4,000 in total viewers for the week, but still firmly in second place among the soaps with over 3 million viewers.  As for Days of our Lives, it was not a good week for the NBC series.  They lost -64,000 viewers and tied a new low in the 18-49 key female demo rating share.

So soapers, if you were being the armchair quarterback, what changes would you make to your current favorite soaps to increase viewership?  What storylines are working for you?  Which are not?  What show do you think currently is showing the most potential to keep you hooked throughout the summer months?  Let us know!

GH: Changes I would make for starters is STOP this ridiculous reality show with Kristina. Alexis is a strong, independent woman. I cannot believe she’s kowtowing to her daughtyer, Kristina. / I was against the baby switch storyline, but it might actually work. I will reserve judgement. / The most important change I would make overall is MORE ROMANCE! Triangles, cat-fights over a man. Give a woman a reason to love the man! Old fashioned soap opery isn’t a bad idea either.

I agree. The Kristina reality show thing has got to go!!

NEVER HEARD OF IT!

I completely agree – the Kristina “I’m gonna act out with all my issues and get me a reality show drama” is a pitiful storyline. I’m really surprised it was written it – think about it. Soap viewers are not into reality shows, they like stories with depth, plot, drama and acting abilities. Not shallow garbage like what’s seen on reality shows, which are basically about people who have never grown up. I think Alexis should send Kristina off to join the military. A little boot camp of some sorts is what that girl needs. What a waste of a character and salary on that show.

Get some actors that can bring some storylines reflecting integrity and drama on the show, like Erika Slezak – and bring on the Buchanans!

im LOVING GH!!!!!!!!! only thing i would do right now…is bring on MCBAM!!!!

Bring on more Jolie!!!

OH MOST DEFINITE. I AGREE BRING ON MCBANGIN, MCBASAM,MCBAM AS WE KNOW WHO WATCH LONGER THAN 10 TO 20 YEARS, SAM AND JASON ARE SOON OVER, JUST A MATTER OF TIME.ABOUT TIME,BECAUSE NO WAY A LADY WITH CLASS,INTEGRITY,HONOR,WORTH,WILL STAY WITH A GUY WHO IS THE REASON HER SON DIED.SAM WILL BE WITH JOHN MCBAIN,THE WRITER RON CARLIVATI,IS NOT OBTUSE,NOT TO PUT SAM WITH MCBAIN.

HE WILL JUST BE PATIENT,JOHN AND SAM FANS 2012! IT’S COMIN.

I have an idea for GH’s ratings to go up. Stop making it “The Sonny show”. I’m not saying to give Sonny the pink slip. But make him a regular character instead of the “star of the show”.

GH is the show of the Quartermaines, not the Corinthos.

Your right Heather, We want to see more of the quartermaines and less time with the Corinthous. Bringing back Alan, Aj, and Emily would be a good start. Seeing Edward is always a bonus. We need to be reminded that it is Monicas house, I will never get tired of her saying that.

Barbara T I e-mailed Michael Fairman…About your concerns about GMA & katie..And wre will GH go………….I hope we get an answer on this………As you red GH is in 3rd place..Good ratings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Hope gh stays in 3rd place or better..

HOPE THEY USE THE REALITY SHOW TO LAUGH AT THEM ,BUT IF TEA AND VICTOR’S SON REALLY DIES ,I’M GONE .!

I can’t believe the storyline kills Victor and Tea’s baby! After the death of OLTL, why couldn’t they just give us this one, small miracle? Heartbreaking.

I heard at soaptown usa( looselips) that tea and victors baby is as dead as Victor, Go there and read what they have to say about the death of those two babies it’s interesting. Something is going on in port charles I also heard that baby hope is not dead either. Would be nice if Dr. David Hayward is around, He has a way of bringing dead people back.

THEY NEED TO GET RID OF MOB S/L AND BRING ON TREVOR ST JOHN .VICTOR FOR TEA ,

I only watch Y&R and GH right now. And, that being said, I have had no complaints with GH since the new regime took over. Except for maybe Florencia’s over-the-top acting and clutching her “pregnant” belly ALL THE TIME. I guess Florencia has never been pregnant. In both of my pregnancies I never clutched my belly as much as she does in one episode. Oh well. It is small potatoes compared to how much the new team has given us. I love that Roger Howarth is on contract. I don’t care for the new Kristina so far, but she has not shown us much either. There are too many positives actually to comment on. 🙂

As far as Y&R, this past week was REALLY good with Danny and Christine and the clips from old-school Phyllis, et al. Ricky is so sadistic, it is good. He actually has me cheering for Phyllis because I do not care for bullying.

I liked that they could bring back Lauralee Bell and Michael Damien and insert them like they were on contract and have their scenes run so seamlessly like they never left Y&R.

I like where Michael’s career is going. However, I do not care, one iota, for Victor and Sharon. Glad to see her snarky remarks to Victoria bit her in the butt. I would like to see some real story for Abby. I miss Adam. I wish they would just tell us what happened between Noah and Eden already and move on. I really do not care for Nikki and Jack. They are wonderful veteran actors, but their “romance” has been forced and does not feel real. I am not buying it. I love any scenes with Victoria and Billy.

I wish I could watch DAYS and B&B, but with two little ones (who do not even allow me to watch the two soaps I do watch as they air – have to watch on Tivo after they go to bed) I am afraid there are not enough hours in the week for all of them.

Gosh, and HOW can I forget to mention Robin Mattson as Heather. She is a riot!!!

Great post Christine! I agree with almost all of this. I think the Jason/Sam/John triangle is a great one and they might even breathe more life into GH using one of the oldest soap archetypes in the book – the baby switch. Oddly enough, this just might work – I’m willing to give it a shot.

I’m tired of the love triangle on bold and the beautiful let hope be happy steffy stole him although hope is a little weak give her some back bone and please expose bill i’m sick and tired of him.

I will not watch the stupid reality show storyline on GH. I will ff right throught it. This storyline could make ratings drop!!!!! Bring on more OLTL.

I think GH has already stopped being the Sonny show, and I love it.

That gain must be due to the new viewers crossing over from OLTL like me.

GH is my favorite soap right now. I look forward to it everyday. YR writing is really bad right now. Enjoying DOOL. B&B needs less focus on THE triangle (Hope, Liam, Steffy). Spread around the canvas to other characters please.

actually i think days of our lives was really great on friday. the stefano murder directing was good. think viewers might have been turned off by the constant back and forth, over and over with showing of guns but it led to a culmination and they should stay tuned. i think general hospital was smart to add llanview to its arena. it draws those viewers. storylines must run faster. don’t worry so much about the 18-49 demo. use 50 plus have more disposable income for gosh sakes!!!!!!!!!!!! we are more willing to stick with something we grew up with: TV drama, scripted

Puhlease! GH, do not, do a “reality show” with Alexis family…. please don’t dumb down soaps… sorry Kristina… you can find something better to do… ugh! Mob Princess! Summer teeny bopper time. I think Molly and TJ are cute… this would be a good birds and the bees story.

as for the recast of Kristina…. doesn’t she look so much like Skyy? she could be Skyy and Lorenzo Alcazar’s daughter… i wish… sky and lorenzo were back…

Not sure all the reasone why but I been finding YnR a big ‘yawn’ lately. GH- I cringe at what they might do with the baby’s s/l. Always enjoy Luke n Tracy…need more core family time and romance. Seems now that Robin is gone there isn’t one happy couple. So far don’t like NuChristina..maybe in time..but she seems older then her older sister Sam. And where the heck is Steve while Heather is running around loose!

It would be great to bring in Tea’s daughter and Victor, or at least mention that he IS alive! Also bring on Natalie

I only watch DOOL, Bold and the Beautiful, General Hospital.

Days of our lives: I have always loved, Lexie, EJ, Nicole, Stefano, Daniel, Abe, Will, Sami, Brady, Hope, Sonny. These characters have had, the best stories so far. Lexie’s Brian tumor is the best story, of all of them. It brought all of these characters, in some way. 2.) Is Hope and Brady’s story- which also brought the past characters, like Billie back. When Brady was in the hospital. And when he woke up, then was reunited with Hope. Was my favorite part. 3.) Abe and Lexie- their relationship is for the record books. And his support through all of this. Is remarkable. 4.) EJ, Stefano- their relationship is estranged, now but even before all of this happened. They were hand in hand. Buddies . Then he had the rug, pull right from under him. And now he has nothing. But Lexie. They are the best part, of all this. And Stefano has what, is coming to him. For what all he has done. 5.)EJ/ Sami/ Nicole- has a part in this story as well. And EJ has sleeping around with these 2. And it ruined Sami’s relationship with her son will. And Nicole has a big part , in this of being pregnant, and was caught switching the DNA test results. By Daniel played his part, to help her. Cause everyone knows EJ is like, as a person. And now it’s like, of what she’s taking away more than she has bargained with. When EJ will find. The truth has a way to come out. 6.) They should pair Will with Sonny.

Bold and the Beautiful: The best parts: Hope seeing a therapist. Liam and Steffy- they should stay married, and no one can just get over, anyone taking pills. That’s why he should stay, with Steffy. Does he want to stay happy. Or being put down, with more than he bargained with. He should. If she goes back on her word, like she did the last time. The daddy: Hope’s bio father, Deacon Sharpe . I would like to see him on screen more. Especially with Brooke, will be frantic. And being with Hope, is more entertaining to watch. If he comes back, and he should turn the tables on the person, who’s pulling this into action. Bill. They should pair him with Amber again. I have been waiting for this moment. Rick: he has been getting around, first with Amber. But now he needs someone new. Maybe Caroline. Caroline and Thomas: they are the perfect couple. If she introduced him, to her 2 gay mothers. Thats the biggest part. If they are commenting to each other. Then it’s serious.

General Hospital: 1.) Anthony& Heather- these 2 together are, very hilarious together. And the way that she, moved him in this last episode. Was to die for. 2.) Todd& Sonny- these 2 fathers are the best thing, that has happened to, GH for a long time. It’s time for sonny to find, new enemy’s like Todd. And Todd is ruthless just like Sonny is. Whoever crosses them, they usually find themselves in danger. In someway. PERFECTION. 3.) The OLTL crossover: they have picked the other soap, out of PERFECTION. To show more people. And to give them more screen time. And ever since GH, has gone up in the ratings. If they would have, picked AMC it wouldn’t as good. If they would actually go down in the ratings. And of having OLTL again on GH. Is giving GH to improve. 4.) Jason/John/Sam- this love triangle is one, of the best one EVER. Compared this one to the, past love triangle. This one is the BEST BEST BEST. One yet. Sam has history with both, John as Caleb. On Port Charles these 2 were my top favorites on their separate soaps and on Port Charles. Of what I watched on social media’s. John and Sam could be the next super couple. And with Jason they need to be together for the babies sake. It’s his son. And he needs to get over, his jealously. And just be with Sam.

Oh good old Heather driving around running her mouth to a corpse and then her quote The Things You Do For Love. It made my day as sick as I get of Jason & sonny’s woes they bring Heather on and all is forgiven. Does anyone else think she reminds you of Bette Davis sometimes only better looking!!!

Good news for GH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GH: More comedy and romance to come I hope. Less mobster stories. Loved the “Weekend at Bernie’s” scene that played out with Anthony at Monica’s house last week, just hilarious. Luke,Tracy,Monica and Heather all in one scene, loved it! I don’t like the “Goodfellas” scenes: Johnny shooting Anthony, Sonny threatening Todd at the sterotypical mobster style Italian restaurant where you eat lots of pasta before sleeping with the fishes, McBain being worked over by thugs. What mobster movies I have seen have given me nightmares, so I hope these storylines go on the back burner fast. More comedy and romance please!

NBC is talking about adding a 5th hour to the Today show as part of Lauer’s new contract, which might mean the end of Days. How can networks be so stupid to cater to the egos of their stars. At its worst, I would take Days any day over another hour of Today and Lauer.

I don’t understand their thinking, what makes them think that we want to watch their Idiot hosts morning and now afternoon? its to much news and glorifying celebrities, I am worried about that good afternoon america abc is going to replace the revolution with, what happens when Katie shows up? Where is general hospital going? I knew not to get overly excited when we heard gh would be renewed another year. If they were really going to stick with their last soap they would have given it more then one year. I think our afternoon shows will go down in history as one of the worse mistakes the networks made by disposing them and the soap fans.I know one thing if abc gets rid of general hospital they will loose the last hour they had left with me. Bad decisions on the bosses, what use to be a story telling afternoon now turned into a non stop news talk crap filled day that won’t be worth turning on you television anymore, I am sick.

Studio talk shows are simply the easiest and cheapest shows to produce. People will look elsewhere for entertainment and daytime ratings will decline even further. At some point in the future, after the rejection and failure of daytime talk, maybe there will be a revival of soaps as the new retro fashion. Almost a billion people understand English. A good soap sold worldwide could make money and easily outperform national talk.

I agree with your Idea of a worldwide soap, Bring back One life to live and all my favorite characters, Ron and Frank to. I still can’t get use to not seeing it at 2 o’clock, At least I have a little part of Landview on general hospital. I am worried abc is getting rid of their last soap I wish someone from that network would say something. When did they, cough, cough, Renew general hospital? I forgot.

This is sad because what will happen is the networks will take programs on and off to their liking not caring what the viewing audience watches, Harrys law should have been kept on I can name a few shows that were cancelled over the last 2 years, and I don’t buy that one life to live was low in the ratings it never made any sense, Maybe they should put counting things in our televisions, but that will take years, maybe everyone should have a box of some kind, I don’t know, what I do know is I watch a lot of tv and I am a no body to the shows that I watch and that’s wrong.

Thought it should have been higher since alot more oltl fans are watching.Don’t trust Neilsen. They need to be taken down.We boycott abc and GMA’s ratings go upb.nd last week gh went down.Something’s wrong in Neilsen. With them only counting certain age groups alot aren’t even counted. Its just wrong to exclude alot pf people.Corrupted.

I don’t trust neilson either I believe they lied about how many people watch the soaps unless abc did it. Yesterday I heard that the chew is going down in the ratings and so is the view, God where did abc/disney come up with those stupid names for their dopy shows?

The Chew has gained alittle the last three weeks by Neilsen.Don’t know whos watching it but as long as it stays above 2 million abc will keep it.I have emailed Neilsen 4 times wanting the proof but they have refused to answer me.

I Know I sound like a broken record, But who watches that stuff? The reason they don’t answer you is they don’t know themselves if it’s real or not. Something should be done so they can get a true reading and every one gets counted not a certain age group, that’s why I don’t believe them. And I also believe the networks lie, On their ads for their shows the day after it premiers they will say over 50 million people watched such and such a show and it’s never the truth. There all lies.

Problem is shows are getting cancelled over Neilsen and something needs to be done about it.Less then 25,000 people are determing what we watch.A woman on facebook said she works at a post office and 2 to 3 times a years Neilsen paperwork for ratings are sent back because the address is no good.Who’s answering themGoogled IS NEILSEN ACCURATE and read where people have admitted about how many are in there households to get the ratings up for a show they like.some even admitted to not even watching just filling out the paper.

So in other words the neilsens way of counting everything we watch is a farce, That’s terrible, And whats happening at the post office having to send all that paperwork back makes it even worse, And I still would like to know how they know the ages of all the viewers. It all looks like a scam to me.

Until we stop Neilsen ‘s tactics nothing is gonna change. No matter how many watch its up to the Neilsen boxes who is watching.Harry’s
law on NBC was cancelled with high ratings because the veiwing audiences was to old.Mind you they where on top on NBC.Networks completely ignore the veiwing audiences after 34,NBC kepted shows with half the ratings because 18 o 34 year olds watch them more.We the ones who watch more and are more stable to spend more or being ignored.I am tired of being ignored by networks and Neilsen.

Y&R is getting better!
B&B needs to end the Liam/Steffy/Hope triangle
DAYS, here we go with the Who Shot Stefano? Really enjoying Will storyline!

Come on people you can’t bring back many more Quartermaines lol Alan, AJ and Emily are DEAD already lol and Emily has already been back once!!! They can bring back Ned, Lois and Dillon. It would be nice to see Scott Clifton back and away from the dreck he’s given to act on the B&B!!!

Alan. Aj , and Emily should never have been killed off, dumb move on the past writers. Guess they had to have more room for all of the gangsters.

I am with you, Jeff, on resurrections. Why bring them back if the family is not front and center anyway?

The Kristina reality show is hysterical. That is all they actually have on tv right now so it was on the money. This is the best show ABC has to offer and you would think they would want and try to get some viewers back. They will never acknowledge that they destroyed daytime. People still watch soaps and if you want entertainment, they are the ones to watch. All the networks are broadcasting nothing but reality and news and none really care about what the viewers want. NBC is becoming worse than ABC. What can we do to make the networks understand we do not want more news and reality. Not entertaining.

glad we’re up in ratings, but not crazy about the Kristina storyline – especially since we’ve told ABC we’ve had enough of “reality” tv for real! ha! I suppose this is suppose to appeal to the teens that are out of school now… but it’s not the best use of our actors, that is ‘for sure! Rather see her in a good story line about maybe volunteering with seniors (not high schoo kind!) you know, something with real meaning, not this crap!

high schoo = high school! 🙂

I keep hearing about GH’s demise – this time set for the middle of January. But this bit is interesting in that it could be GH or THE CHEW. I think it is IMPERATIVE that all of us do NOT watch anything but GH on ABC daytime. Take it with a big boulder of salt, but if GH gets better ratings, than The Chew could be sold into syndication and GH could stay. Otherwise it is bye bye, GH and hello Good Afternoon America (or whatever the heck they call themselves) and The Chew. Who wants that?
