RATINGS: The Young and The Restless Has Strong Week! Shows Gains In Total Viewers & Women 18-49 Demo!

By Michael Fairman

on

The ratings are out for the week of August 18th through August 22nd, 2o14, and this time its The Young and the Restless who performed overall best from the four network daytime dramas.  Y&R gained in total viewers with +69,000 bringing its tally to 4,468,000.  That is the shows largest weekly audience since July 25th.

In addition, Y&R finally made some significant gains and headway in the all important women 18-49 demo adding +86,000, and putting some distance between them, and second place in the demo, General Hospital!  Y&R is now over 150,000 up on the ABC soap opera.  For the rating share, Y&R delivered 1.2/09 and that is the best showing since back in April of this year.

In story, looks like Nick (Joshua) putting the pieces together of who Mariah (Camryn) truly is, and Neil’s (Kristoff St. John) blindness and more, started to perk up the viewers who want to see action in the town of Genoa City!

The only other soap in the plus column in total viewers was The Bold and the Beautiful who added +61,000 and remained in second place of the four soaps, and also added viewers in the women’s 18-49 and 25-54 demo.  GH and DAYS were down in total viewers and demo categories this ratings week.  You can see the entire ratings picture courtesy of SON here.

So, what is perking your interest again these days on Y&R, that is finally showing some uptake?  Share your thoughts below!

Y&R has had some improvement in storyline: Days is still entertaining but it needs a shot in the arm and hopefully its Melissa Archer…sorry but Jordan and Rafe need to go unless things improve with them stat…lets bring back Hope and Julies bro Steve Olsen once again played by Stephan Schnezter…Steve could be a new love interest for Kate and the new resident bad boy like Nick was(older mature version)…Steve sold fake antiques when last seen in 1979…the actor seemed to be interested…in a 2013 interview he thought that a return wouldve happened 14 years ago…please Days bring him back…GH is just ok entertainment…one day i enjoy some moments and most other days i dont…its like RC gets too many ideas at once then gets bored with one(like A.J.s)…and focuses too much on filler plots without continuity with the more important front and center storylines which drags and stagnates the show…i actually liked the one plot with Ava planning to do in Micheal with the choclate mouse…im a chocaholic and wouldve down it in a New York minute…lol…i was suprised the scene actually continued into the next episode like a good cliffhanger should…im already tired with the Levi and kidnapping storyline but ill wait and see if that pics up…as for ratings they always go up and down…i believe these shows get ‘temp viewers’ who only tune in when certain stories interest them and very few stay for the long run like we used to do…just a thought!!!

If they ever do a female “Dumb & Dumber” we have two leads. Maxi and “Noclulu.” Lulu is kidnapped and the first thing she asked Dumbte is how is Rocco! Secondly, why not just dial the number and tell the police they are okay and throw the phone back on the floor so that the police can trace the call and Levi wouldnt be so suspicious when he returns. No, they are gabbing away and he walks in and catches them and now they are on the run. Who cares if they ever get rescued!

lol…i agree…especially with the dumb and dumber part!!!

I agree too. And speaking of Dumber and Dumber as well as the word “too,” Timm, did you know a sequel to that movie is coming out?
It’s called “Dumber and Dumber to.” That just cracks me up.

Timmm…y-e-s…female “Dumb & Dumber” MOST DEFINITELY!!!!! To me, Lulu is SOMEWHAT DUMB…but…Maxie is A WHOLE LOT MORE DUMBER!!!!! And, all of this is starting to make me ROOT FOR Levi (NuHaircut and all)…a TRULY SCARY THOUGHT…LOL!!!!! Timmm, most of all, you hammered it PERFECTLY ON THE HEAD with the last sentence of your posting…to which I say…as far as I’m concerned, B-O-T-H of those ditzes (Lulu and ESPECIALLY Maxie) can STAY KIDNAPPED!!!!! Oh, Well.

Take care, dude. A-C-E-S!!!!!

After 20 years, Yes a real sequel is coming out to Dumb and Dumber starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels on November 14th. Cannot wait!

Y&R has been great lately. Stories are finally moving and are intriguing. The acting performances on Y&R have been amazing.

With all due respect, I must disagree. The only thing on Y&R that is keeping me interested is Mariah’s parentage. Other than that? It is a snore…JMO. I am sick of Nikki’s revisiting the bottle ,which by now is so stale. I have been watching this woman since I was 14…. That’s almost 15 years ago….and, her storylines all revolve around the bottle. She has no fortitude…you would think that after all these years she could handle any problem she encounters….her only solution is …” Cheers, down the hatch”?

LOL

my big beef with Nikki

for the love of god… what is Victor ?

what trail… trait… treat… treaty does he bare

what ensnares your Nikki?

it takes all I can bare… to wanna wallop her character and supply her with drink

at least MTS… can act out…. her own Nikki emptied out

and trials and tribulations later… it’s snore… back at the starting gate with macho Newmans

LOL

I stand ready… guarded for Nikki and Victoria

LIVE Nikki

celebrate your individualism (s)

Victors no less, nearby, cared truly

Nikki

give yourself some stamina and venture yours

i could cry for her

such angst, fret, nirvana

bubble up your passion Nikki

You must be watching reruns of old shows! Mariah is good, the bad is Jack had something on Victor when he picked up Victor’s note at Kay’s memorial but chickened out and put it back in the bowl, and the ugly is anything Winters!

It isn’t clear if you are alluding to me, Timmm…but, I agree. I did say that Mariah’s storyline is stealing the show. I might add, though, that the bridal dress scene…was it a bridal gown? Whatever…it looks like a scene right out of CRIMINAL MINDS.

GH lost 100,000 viewers and was down in all demos for the week, a week following the kidnapping of two legacy characters and the shooting of the former police commissioner. Now of course that sounds a lot more exciting than the horrible writing, production and directing actually was for all of that, but let’s go with it.

The previous Thursday, 8/14, Mac is shot and Maxie and Lulu are kidnapped. The next day Friday, Aug 15, nothing followed up. We are treated to idiot Franco and Nina in an elevator, Piph and Milo pining over each other and some more threesome talk from the gay men on the show.

Monday, Aug 18, the week of these current ratings, Mac gets to the hospital and we see the kidnapped women. Then what? Nothing for the rest of the week. Not one of the next four, count them four episodes deals with the kidnapping.
What did we get? Well we got idiot Franco everyday, with Nina in the elevator, out of the elevator, confronting Carly, searching under the bed for Sonny. And is it a coincidence that a five day Franco week turns people off? We got Nina and her required four days a week. We got her with Franco, Rosalie, Silas, Sam. So a week full of Franco and Nina lost viewers.

What else? Ava and Kiki bonding out of left field so that Michael can come to dinner. Alice finally came out of surgery that I think started in 2013. Sobby Sparkle Pony was back! talking about her child that people care as much about as they do her.

We had Ned, Alexis, Olivia, Michael, Morgan and Tracy all in the same hospital that Mac was wheeled into and no one knew about the shooting and kidnapping. That’s believable. And of course that brings us back to the point, a shooting and kidnapping on 8/14 and over the course of the next six episodes, that’s six episodes, the victims appear in one and no one in town knows. Any time this show does anything that could have some interest and momentum they kill it with terrible writing, pacing and continuity.

Which takes me to the larger and constant point, TPTB at GH are amateurs and ABC needs to get a handle on this show unless they are content with treading water at about 2.8 million viewers for a good long time and possibly worse.

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, what did you think of the play?

ROFLMAO

I agree with everything you say…no continuity whatsoever, pointless filler plots that stagnate the show, and when it does get somewhat interesting it starts to go downhill with the writing and pacing like you said…and who walks a shooting victim up to the tenth floor…ridiculous…i had to bury an infant so that part of the storyline is difficult to watch as it is so i wont comment further on that…it was a boring week on GH and i was only entertained when certain actors were on but they like Anna had very little to do!!!

lol

You are way too overly involved ….. whoa..

You seem to hate what you are watching yet you’re punishing yourself by watching it and taking note of all you hate…..
.( personally overly involved in the soaps syndrome, is a thing….

Soaps are make believe.. usually not logical .. they are soaps lol ..
— one can not make reality from fiction / not possible 🙂

Long live the soaps.. the good, bad and ugly of them is priceless!!

Well, now, su0000. I always enjoy what you write. But, I must disagree…there have been, and still are, and always will be, many psychos who make reality out of fiction. These sickos mimic fictional travesties , tragedies and butchering of human lives on a daily basis…they are out there. So, one CAN make reality out of fiction, just as one can make fiction out of reality. These two facts are intertwined…one goes hand-in-hand with the other.

Yes, soaps are make believe, but they are a specific genre of writing called Serial Drama. All of Charles Dickens’ works were first published as serial drama. Now imagine if the newspapers publishing Great Expectations as a serial, suddenly decided to throw A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, and Bleak House into the middle of Great Expectations, and failed to inform the readers of what they were doing. That is what FV/RC do with GH.

Those of us who know from past experience how these shows should be written and produced, shouldn’t have to just settle for a comic book version of Great Expectations instead of the novel. And their desire for a better show isn’t trumped by “it’s just a soap”, when Cartini won’t even follow the rules of writing a soap.

Yeah…. after all, its not like GH needs or wants those 99,000 viewers they lost…. to heck with all of them. If they don’t like amateur productions too bad for them!

GH50 i agree with you, the continuity is bad on this show, and the pacing too. i knew the milo and epiphany scene was more like a filler for the hour, wish got me thinking that they had to either reshoot some stuff, or delay airing other stuff like Robin and “jason” coming back. they probably thought they were going to get Billy Miller to play Jason and he bailed and they had to fill the show with filler storyline that are going nowhere. maybe they should get a co headwriter because i think RC can’t handle writing for this show, he’s all over the place, and he needs help, i can understand the show wanting to keep things under the vest for the element of surprise, and they probably want to save airing the juicy stuff for the start of the fall season, but they played this jason thing far too long and thats not a cool thing to do to viewers.

LOL

I do take exception to the rule… that , how dare they, diss fans and audience alike… that, when Mac was shot… i expected it to be the shot heard ’round the world

I was crying… and deflated.. the next day and after that… that it took that LONG to see him finally showing up at the hosp.

LOL @Harry
Ms. Lincoln… knew this was coming… she’s resigned herself that to throw any more bait hook and switch is merely an exercise in futile attempt to discount aware

keeping up with lauded GH is so full of “w’ holes” gaping at that… but… nevertheless, is better than Y&R

Gh has no follow up with the Victor Cassadine story. We get more Sabrina, Nina, and Franco. They wonder why the ratings tanks. I think they really don’t care unless the show hits lows again like it did last year.

Oh this can’t be true! After all the predictions of the demise of Y&R when MM left. lol

Y&R has gotten better–a lot better. Some folks were complaining because Mariah turned out to be Cassie’s twin sister. They were feeling let down because it was so predictable. I don’t know where folks got the idea that good story telling always has to yield forth a great surprise (see plot devices, ie GH’s Ron Carlivati) because it doesn’t. Mariah being Cassie’s twin was actually a viable explanation to why they are each other’s doubles. The important thing is there was some solid character driven writing which followed through with the reveal not to mention some damned fine acting by Sharon Case and Joshua Morrow. Now Ian, her seemingly kind father figure and spiritual mentor) has Mariah drugged up and all dressed up in a bride’s gown. Now that is creepy! Now that is a sinister villain and what makes Ian so sinister is his external charisma which disguises his internal evil nature. So yes, I am back to watching Y&R and no, I am not back to watching GH.

My main complaint about Y&R is the utter waste of Tristan Rogers, When he is on the small screen, he lights up the joint just by allowing his natural, easy-going charisma and sense of humor to come through.
The problem is they have yet to give this man a storyline worthy of his talent. How many times must we see him meet up in secret with some shady loan shark in which Colin delivers the same old line,”I will have the money for you soon but do not involve my family”? Or to Cane,”I’m fine, son. Don’t worry about me, I got it handled.”? Please, Y&R writers, you have a treasure in the person of Tristan Rogers– use him! And yes, I even love Jill when she is with him which is a huge testament to his charismatic prowess. Give this man a story which does not entail him acting like a passive man who has no control over his life and finances.

PS. Speaking of bad writing, I apologize for my very badly written post above. I used the word ‘now’ to begin a sentence three times in consecutive order, completely ignoring the importance of sentence variation. I also placed a parenthesis when I meant to put in a comma. Now, that is some bad writing!
I don’t know what it is about these little black boxes–perhaps it’s my poor eyesight, but I do have trouble writing coherent sentences in here.

Harry,
your writing is just fine.. Mine is written with an accent lol
Americans don’t speak and write in Queens English, these days..
Proper english went out decades ago (altho spoken and written by those that need to be proper)
We proudly speak ”American” and that is whatever is spoken/written ..

Be proud to speak American!! we rock !!

and- I agree!
Tristan should be back on GH . he kicked ass being Scorpio..
Now at Y&R he is Jills old Duffus and that is sad to see the great Scorpio being degraded 🙁 ..

Dont worry about badly written posts…im certain you notice mine arent so great(due mainly to past and present medically problems) but as long as we get our points made thats all that really matters…most posters wouldnt be able to comment if we all had to be perfect writers…GH is badly written and some dont seem to mind it…lol…you always have some of the most interesting comments and you have been very witty too, especially with suOOOO…i enjoy an occasionaly chuckle from you…T.R. is wasted at Y&R …not much better than what was written for him at GH…i do agree that Y&R has improved lately and Ian is a far less campy and more interesting villian than those Saturday Morning Retro Cartoon Villians over at GH!!!

Jim–I only notice your sparkling prose which makes me laugh more than you know. Thank you.

Harry….TR’s biggest problem is that he is in the wrong fictional location!!!!!….”Colin” needs to bid “Genoa City” adieu once and for all, so that “Robert” can return from “Wisconsin” to “Port Chuck” where his sparkling, cheeky personality can shine for all to see. GH is just crying out for his presence!

C’mon guys..
Ratings are up and down up and down, a rollercoaster..
always have been and will be… no big deal if one goes up and one goes down (unless by a million) That is what ratings do, go up and down LOL 🙂
I do not give ratings any hoopla..

The only thing I care about is;
If I like my soap and enjoy it.. If it has only a 100 viewers it wouldn’t matter as long as I liked watching it 🙂

(next week the ratings will switch and go up and down like the always.. )

Stop it Su00, I don’t know how to react when you’re nice to me!

I love Roger Howarth. He has to be embarrassed to be Franco. It is a horrible character that is not clicking with viewers. I love Michelle Stafford. She is great and she will find her way. Roger needs a reboot. GH fans would not be pissed if you turn him into Stephan Cassadine. Its a soap, we wont care. Michelle needs to act with people on her level. On Y&R she acted with Peter Bergman. He is a legend! On GH Michele acts with Silas, Sam, and Rosalie. You see her character come to life when her and Roger were stuck in the elevator together. We hate Franco but you see what happens when you forget for a moment who he is and he bounces lines off of Michelle. Come on Frank, you saved the show, quit being so lazy! Cut the cast and focus on strong actors and write good stories.

Sorry, but this GH fan would be pissed if Roger Howarth turned into Stefan Cassidine. There are still many fans who will only except a return of Stephen Nichols in the role of Stefan. There are other Cassadines out there if Roger needed to be turned into another character. I get what your saying about Franco, but frankly switching Roger around from character to character over and over would most likely be frustrating… both for him and his fans.

Oh listen, I would love Stephen Nichols back first. I just dont know if he is interested in reprising the role? There was a rumor almost two years ago of a new Cassadine coming to Port Charles named Valentine, oddly around February 2013 but it never happened. Cast Roger as this new Cassadine.

That would definitely make more sense. Stefan is Nikolas’ older uncle. The rumor is still out there that someday it might be revealed that Stefan is really Nikolas’ father. Since Roger Howarth and Tyler Christopher are only about four years apart, I couldn’t picture Roger playing Tyler’s father, lol. So yes, making Roger another Cassadine or even a member of another Port Charles family would work out much better. In the mean time, I do hope for a return someday of Stephen Nichols….He would really stir up the Cassadines. 🙂

Agree…Roger would be better as a Cassidine!!!

lol
Roger Howarth/Franco is awesome!!
The old bones from OLTL can let Todd go,Todd is dead and gone, move on peoples. Roger Howarth is an actor and his Franco is great!! Love Franco ..
Roger Howarth is legended as a soap actor, none better..
Franco will have his 180 turn, wait for it..
I hope he goes ballistic and kills Robin!!

GH is unique.. and it has a special kind of audience..
The GH fans are colorful people with big opinions and we are not passive..
It takes a certain type of person to see the beauty of GH, yah!
Not everyone has what it takes to be a GH fan ..
One needs to be very openminded and enjoy the wild and crazy fun GH offers , some can not do that and they should watch boring same thing every year Y&R..
GH is cdonterverstional .. and therefore it gets all the attention on boards and the 100’s of posts..

I didnt watch OLTL. Franco to me, can be redeemable but his character is boring. Redeeming the James Franco portrayal or Franco is tough because we liked him as an unpredictable psycho. Its like Victor Cassadine. His character is interesting because he is an evil Cassadine. If you redeemed Victor and had Victor dressed as Santa at the GH storytelling event, he would be boring. Franco’s only hope is to live on the edge with Nina.

I think some of these ratings have to come from strong performances from Ray Price who plays Ian Ward. I was lucky this weekend to meet him at Fan Expo where he was a guest . Since it’s a sci-fi/fantasy show I think he was mainly there for RoboCop, but I’ve enjoyed him in many roles including 24 and Mad Men. Was able to have a nice chat with him and tell him he’s been really, really bad on Y&R. He was very nice and just laughed. Had to hold myself back from asking him what comes next. And he does have those penetrating blue eyes.

Mistake…Ray Wise, not Price.

I am happy to see Y and R’s increase in ratings. They have turned the show around in some of the storylines. It is definitely an improvement and I think the writers are finding there balance in their stride. I like the mix of vets and newbies.

Y&R may have had a strong week (or whatever) in terms of ratings, but, in terms of OVERALL storytelling????? H-A!!!!! I’m N-O-T buying it. No. I will say this, though: In terms of the Y&R character canvas (or whatever), here is what I think are the show’s current strengths:
1. Anita
2. Esther
3. Gloria
4. Jack
5. Jill
6. Kelly
7. Kevin
8. Lauren
9. Mariah
10. Mark (aka that Detective Harding dude)
11. Michael
12. Stitch
13. Traci
As for the rest of them (character-wise)…never mind.

Peace.

great news for y n r !!!! Fave show !
background music is getting better, but still miss the old score, it s important to the show and distinct heightens every scene!
y n r needs to continue and build the romance pull of relationships! why isnt leslie worried about neil, will she be there to pick up the pieces after hilarys exposed? whats up with leslies quickie wedding to dr.barton? is abby and tyler romance already finished? it was so sweet and innoncent until it was dumped , just as sweet is austin and summer!
these young and older romances need to be explored and at the forefront of the characters motivations. successful characters like victor and nikki and sharon and nick are pivotal because the audience roots and is invested in them. pls y n r writers, dont rush potential couples like abby and tyler or austin and summer or neil and leslie because love is what drives story!

They need the original music it would help improve the show greatly!!

‘Days of Our Lives’ Favorites Making Returns: Alison Sweeney, Christie Clark, Chandler Massey and Bryan Dattilo

Great news for Days of Our Lives fans, now that Ryan Quan is co-head writer of the long-running soap opera. Coming in June of 2027 (since DAYS tapes ten or so months ahead), you can look forward to the returns of Alison Sweeney (Sami Brady), Christie Clark (Carrie Brady), Chandler Massey (Will Horton) and Bryan Dattilo (Lucas Horton).

The foursome is back on set and began last week to tape their upcoming story arc, according to TV Insider. As to what exactly is going on that brings sister Sami and Carrie’s history back up, as well as Will and Lucas’ is only being teased at this time, but suffice to say, it should be intriguing.

Alison Sweeney explained on being back on set, “It was a lot of dialogue and emotion, but with all the best actors to work opposite, we fell into it as if no time had passed. It was really wonderful.”

Photo: JPI

As to working with the longstanding rivalry of Sami and Carrie, Alison added on working with Clark, “So, it really does feel like we’re sisters. It’s so fun, and she’s such a good actor that she makes everything so natural that you can really disappear into those stories.”

JUST LIKE OLD TIMES

It also seems like the deep-history, which often had the sister fighting for the love of Austin Reed, but that might not figure into the equation this time, or will it?

Alison indicated what she thought of the scripts she was given. “I felt like when I read it, it was a page-turner. I was very excited. There’s a lot of history here, and a lot of things that haven’t been said. So, it’s really not like, ‘Oh, rehashing stuff.’ And now having played some of the scenes, I’m psyched.” Sweeney added, as for the men, working again with her on-screen son, Chandler Massey and Will’s on-screen father Bryan Dattilo, was also extra special.

The last time DAYS viewers saw Sami on the canvas was back in November of 2025, when she revealed she has gotten engaged to never-before-seen Dante Vitali. As for Clark, she last visited Salem for the episodes surrounding John Black’s memorial in June of 2025.

Chandler Massey’s Will Horton last made a visit to Salem in November of 2025 when he attended the gala for the Tom Horton Free Clinic as part of the soap opera’s 60th anniversary celebration. Bryan Dattilo was last seen in December of 2025. So, by the time we see all four again it will be close to two years since they were on new episodes of the series. Time to look forward to June of 2027.

So, excited by the news of Alison, Christie, Chandler and Lucas making a return to Days of Our Lives? What do you think the story will be involving, Sami, Carrie, Lucas and Will? Let us know via the comment section.

‘Days of Our Lives’ Alum Al Calderon Talks On His Daytime Emmy-Nominated Scenes as Javi Hernandez (Exclusive)

Published

Last Tuesday, Al Calderon scored the first Emmy nomination of his career for his role as Javi Hernandez on Days of Our Lives.

Calderon name was announced as one of the performers competing for gold in the Emerging Talent in a Daytime Drama Series category at the upcoming 53rd annual Daytime Emmy Awards on October 30.

This week, Calderon chatted live on You Tube’s Michael Fairman Channel for a one-on-one conversation where he discussed: his nominated scenes and time on the Peacock streaming soap opera, his decision to leave DAYS, his role of Nico Silva on Brilliant Minds and its sad cancellation, plus his passing the torch of Javi to Jacob Martinez, who took over the role on-screen on the June 30, 2026 episode of Days of Our Lives.

JAVI REVEALS TO LEO THAT HE HAD A DAUGHTER WHO DIED

Al revealed the scenes that comprise his now Emmy-nominated reel have at its epicenter the heartbreaking moments from the September 12, 2025 episode. In it, Javi shares for the first time to Leo (Greg Rikaart) that he had a daughter named Solana, with a woman he was seeing named Sylvia. One fateful day, Sylvia left their child in a car when she went to work and the little girl died. Javi had blamed himself for not being the parent to take his daughter to school that day since he was hungover the night before, therefore it opened up the opportunity for something to happen to the his child, and it did.

The multi-talented actor/singer explained his reel: “It was the scene where he is talking about his daughter to Leo. I also included the scene where Javi goes to talk to Melinda (Tina Huang) and to see if it would be a viable option to adopt, because I wanted to introduce the subtlety and nuance of why Javi kind of has this whole connection to Tesoro, in a way.”

It is true that Al can bring the tears and make us cry right along with him during his run as Javi.  To that, Calderon added, “I’ve read the comments that I’m a little bit of a crybaby, so I didn’t want the entire reel to be of me crying, but I wanted it to show a little bit of an emotional range of the restraint that Javi was feeling so I included that scene

In addition Calderon shared, “I also included a really beautiful scene with Cherie Jimenez (Gabi Hernandez, DAYS) where I’m looking at photos of Tesoro, and of course, Javi is crying. I just wanted to show the relationship between Javi and his family as well, and as I mentioned the reveal of the child that he lost.”

Alice Halsey

ALUMS AL CALDERON AND ALICE HALSEY REPRESENT DAYS OF OUR LIVES IN EMERGING TALENT CATEGORY

In a twist of fate, Calderon is also nominated in the Emerging Talent category with Alice Halsey who played Rachel Black. Halsey is currently starring in the reboot of Little House on the Prairie in the lead role of Laura Ingalls on Netflix.

As to his hope on Emmy night, Al expressed, “Of course, I want to win, but Alice Halsey is going to give me a run for the money. And if’s not me (who wins the award), it better be her!”

You can check out the full interview with Al below.

Now let us know, do you remember Al’s emotional scenes when he explained to Leo he had a daughter who died, which made it all the more heartbreaking to not end up with permanent custody of Tesoro? What do you think of Al’s chances to win the gold based on his Emmy scene selection? Do you miss him as Javi? Weigh-in via the comment section.

Emily O’Brien Talks On Her Y&R Past as Jana Hawkes and Working with Peter Porte on ‘Days of Our Lives’

Published

By

Emily O'Brien

On the latest edition of Soapy Hosted by Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart which dropped on Tuesday, July 21, Emily O’Brien is the featured guest. As soap fans know, Emily has worked with Rikaart both in her first soap role on The Young and the Restless as Jana Hawkes and now on Days of Our Lives in her current role of Gwen Rizczech.

While Emily continues on DAYS, she has very impressive list of credits in the other part of her career as a voice-over actress and one in motion-capture in some of the most popular video games in the world.

O’Brien was first seen on The Young and the Restless back in 2006. She recalled her landing the role which eventually paired her for her five year run with Greg Rikaart.

Photo: JPI

BEING CAST ON THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS

“The role was just a few days and she wasn’t even supposed to be English,” Emily recalled. “The role was originally called Jade. Karen Rae, the casting director of The Young and the Restless at the time said to me “Oh, you’re from England. Try it with the dialect.” I put it on and she said, ‘I’m going to bring you back at like 3 for s callback.’ So then they changed the role to Jana and they said she’s going to be a Brit. I was only supposed to be on for like five episodes and it turned into 5 years.”

In explaining why she loved crazy Jana, Emily shared, “Jana was sort of like the misanthrope. She was just was the odd one out and I loved it. I felt so comfortable playing that because she was just eclectic and weird and she loved playing with Ouija boards and she rode a motorbike. There was just so much color to bring to her. It was just such a great match to play with Greg (Kevin), and Christian LeBlanc (Michael) and Tracey Bregman (Lauren).

Photo: JPI

GWEN, DIMITRI AND LEO ON DAYS OF OUR LIVES

On Days of Our Lives, the Leo, Gwen, Dimitri dynamic is quite unique and been through many schemes and entanglements. Often Emily finds herself in repartee with her ex-lover, Dimitri, who turned out to be gay and then had a thing for her bestie, Leo (Greg Rikaart)!

During the conversation, Greg and Emily sang, Peter Porte’s praised with O’Brien expressing, “Peter is just ready to play. He comes on set prepared. I’ve never seen him with his script. From blocking and rehearsals, he doesn’t have it. He’s prepared. He’s a physical actor and he always trying to come up with something. I think he let me slap him. He let me kiss him. He let me throw a cheeseburger in his lap. He’s ready for anything for anything.”

You can catch the full episode of ‘Soapy; featuring Emily O’Brien below where the actress also talks about replacing Jen Lilley as Theresa Donovan after being let go as Gwen; and being paired again with Greg Rikaart on the Peacock streaming soap opera this time as best friends and more.

So, were you a big Jana Hawkes and Kevin Fisher fan on Y&R? Did you like them as a couple? Do you like the dynamic between Emily and Peter Porte and Greg Rikaart on DAYS? Weigh-in via the comment section below.
