REPORT: Days of our Lives Targets September Production Restart

Photo: JPI

Looks like Salem and Days of our Lives will be back in full-swing come September, if the target date holds true as revealed today by Deadline.

According to their sources, Corday Productions, who produces the long-running NBC daytime drama, sent out an email to cast members on Thursday notifying them of their intent to resume production come September 1st.

However for this article; reps for NBC, Corday and Sony Pictures TV declined to comment.

Days of our Lives has had enough shows banked through early October of this year, so was not pressed to get back into production amidst the coronavirus pandemic as much as CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful (which went back into production a week and half ago), and The Young and the Restless and General Hospital who are targeting a mid-July restart.

All three of the shows, except for DAYS ran out of original episodes to air, back at the end of April of this year.

So, excited to hear that their may be plans ahead come fall for DAYS to come to back and tape new episodes? Comment below.

Glad to hear production starts back for DAYS but definitely don’t want to see that they are over 6 months ahead in production. I didn’t like how they were so far ahead and if a storyline wasn’t working, we couldn’t write in to voice our opinion so that maybe changes could be made. Sure will be nice to see all four soaps can carry one where we left off.

GH actually lasted until the end of May – thanks to the addition of a large amount of flashbacks.

Hopefully DAYS used the break top is advantage and adjusted storylines that weren’t working. They’ll be close to a taping schedule that the other shows use if they stick to this timing.

Exactly : DAYS schedule… would now be that much closer and in line with the remaining three. WOW as I tried to post… just twirking here and their… actors and writing … this could be exciting to see ALL 4 serials… just churning out… even becoming competitive… clean slate.

which brings up another pint… with @DAYS so far ahead… 8 months… it just wasn’t “fun” to post, knowing no results or change would be forthcoming. which isn’t to say it ever will. I want to cheer DAYS on….

Salem’ite ‘ LETS MOVE

Don’t see Newsom letting up not as long as it means they can turn our country into communism ! How is that working for you Hollywood ? Not so much fun when they are at your door is it?

With the utmost respect, Michael, I don’t know how it’s ok to keep allowing KKKay to post racist, ignorant things under the guise of commenting on TV shows. This one is not overtly racist, but it sure is ignorant and divisive. She is saying that we should let people keep dying, equating public health and science to communism! Her handle is basically KKK for crying out loud! Please Michael, don’t give these people and their hate a platform.

Great point and post, Soapfan! But, there’s freedom of speech and some never miss the opportunity to use it to spread their negativity. Yeah, let’s send everybody back out there! It’s only a pandemic and LIVES don’t matter!

Thank you for your reply, Lew, but as most Americans do, you misunderstand what “free speech” means. Its origin in the constitution is to protect the rights of people to protest to the government, the way #blacklivesmatter is, without being beaten, shot and/or imprisoned by the government (the way #blacklivesmatter protesters are). It is not meant to protect people who post hate-inciting messages on a soap opera message board, which is privately run and moderated. Posting here is not a right.

Edit: I really do appreciate your supportive comment, Lew. I wish more people here spoke up.

WHO’s MINDING the store

Ken Corday “fired” Greg Meng… ex co-executive Producer !!!! what does this mean for the fan

after all these years.. when these serials “LIKE” to meander to the fan… for their LOYALTY… had it not been for “yous”

I don’t know… i’ll take it for what it is. altho, I will voice ALL the comings and goings. who’s fired; let go

otherwise… PLEASE… because this fan … is still bowled over, with Ron Carlivati. HEY… take a look at Michael Fairman one on one w/Erika Slezak. SHE PRAISED his work for OLTL last days. that’s no small change.

I imagine this may have something to do with SONY ????? minding how @DAYS of OUR Lives should be a world wide especial… sigh! snore , more like, what those CBS shows “get”. SONY is the one that NEEDS to step up to the plate.

WOW …. surreal to know… that fans.. and at the expense of Corday production w/Sony w/NBC .. will not have that 8 month in the can . if Corday still has shows till the first 1/2 of October… and this ^^^^ states that Corday wants to start production Sept. 1, 2020. that would give a space of 6 weeks production to bag in the can. WHAT ? Tadah… here’s hoping this WORKS for Corday and his team (s).

which I’ve always thought… would excite even moreso… that the actors step up even moreso with Ron Carlivati and Ryan Quan TEAM (s) to produce even better ALL the denizen of Salem

WHO IS MINDING THE STORE

I pray we see the light past sept/oct 2021

Mucho Gusto

Do they really have shows “banked through the end of October” though? They replayed pretty much the last half of Thursday’s episode on Friday, so it seems like they’re already making use of editing to stretch out the episodes. As long as they don’t use ridiculous flashbacks like GH did, because flashbacks on Days kinda suck, the way they make them look and sound like somebody recorded a video off a TV with their cell phone.

This show has become almost unbearable to watch…with the repeat story arcs, mocking mental illness, endless kidnappings, usage of gun violence. But, the bomb scene (where the acting was horrible by John, Marlena, Hope, etc) was pathetic. Now, we have weddings that take up a whole week and are so poorly done due to budget its laughable. When did Will become ordained to officiate a wedding ceremony. Not sure what’s worse right now, the writing or some of the cartoonish acting. Never being a fan of the campy side of Days, I appreciate the acting and drama/angst brought by the actors that play Steve and Kayla. The actor that plays Steve has been so, good. The actor that plays Justin sounds like a petulant child at times and is no where near the acting range of those two powerful actors.

I think the show is in a good place story wise. However, the handwriting for soaps have been on the wall for some time. I preach it every time I write. The days of the large soap casts are over. Soaps have got to pare down to one core family and revolve the stories around generational issues just like night time dramas such as This is It and Blue Bloods. I’d love to have Gabi’s mother come back and be a homophobe comparing Abby endlessly to her dead sainted sister and disapproving of Will and Sonny raising Ari. I really loved cougar, promiscuous Belle because it took the characters from being so bland. Leo was someone not ever seen on television anywhere- I loved him as John’s son. The Sami and Marlena’s lifelong struggle which is always on the surface is worth weeks of drama. Sami Brady invented the word drama queen. So I say more realism and less ISA nonsense is the way to go.

GLAD TO HEAR THE NEWS I AM FRIENDS WITH SOME OF THE CAST MEMBERS SINCE 1986 I HAVE BEEN ATTENDING DAYS EVENTS AND LOVE DOING THAT ENJOY SEEING THE CAST AND FANS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD

I love Days and hope that it can survive with everything going on w/declining soap audiences and their budget constraints. John and Marlena are wonderful, but let’s face it they are beyond their acting prime and chemistry is meh. I don’t understand why writers don’t try pushing Steve/Kayla Johnson more to forefront instead of supporting. Those two actors can still act their butts off and have out of this world chemistry. Having one or more of their children on the show would bring in a freshness and ability with new stories. All we see mostly, same stuff with the varying branches from John/Marlena try and it’s old.

George Cheeks, CBS President & CEO, on Timeline to Launch New Daytime Drama, ‘The Gates’: “We’re So Focused on Getting it Right”

March 2024 will be remembered in the TV and soap world when the news broke that CBS is prepping a brand new daytime drama. Many had thought a major network would never bring a new daytime soap into the world, given that the last time it was attempted was 25 years ago when the now defunct Passions bowed on NBC.

However, The Gates is definitely in development and moving forward with some major players associated with it including: Michele Val Jean as The Gates writer, showrunner and one of its executive producers, and Sheila Ducksworth from NAACP Venture

Now, for the first time since its announcement, George Cheeks, the president and CEO of CBS and chief content officer for news and sports at Paramount+, spoke on the project that will feature a Black family as its central focus who live in a wealthy gated community.

Photo: NAACP

Speaking with Vulture, and when asked if The Gates is really something that truly has a chance of getting on the air, Cheeks clarified, “It’s super real. And just to give you a little bit of the backstory,  when we hired Sheila Ducksworth to run the NAACP Venture, she and I had multiple meetings talking about what different genres she was going to lean into, and we talked a lot about daytime.”

Cheeks added, “One of the things that the data made very clear to both of us is that daytime soap operas over index with Black women, and yet when you look at soap operas, it’s usually sort of a white-led family with supporting characters that reflect more of our society. So we just thought, wouldn’t it be interesting to flip that and make the core anchor family a Black family, and then make the other characters reflect more the broader scope of society?”

The CEO gave props to Michele Val Jean,  and how Ducksworth came to the table with the former B&B and GH writer. “She found this great writer, Michele Val Jean, who’s been in the soap opera space for 30 years. She came up with a pitch, and we loved it,” shares Cheeks. “We brought Procter & Gamble into it as well, because if there were going to be (product) integrations, we could do it more holistically and organically. All of that is to say, we did a lot of work on the front end to put this together. So while yes, it’s development, it’s accelerated development.”

When prodded on the timeline of when The Gates could come to full fruition, Gates related, “The actual timeline and when we’re going to do it is still uncertain, because we want to get this right. I mean, there hasn’t been a new soap opera launch since I can’t even begin to tell you when. But we have great success with Bold and the Beautiful and Young and the Restless, and so we think we’re the right folks to be launching a new soap. I wish I could tell you more about exact timing, but we’re so focused on getting it right, and that will dictate when we’re ready to launch it.”

The CBS exec also shared that whether The Gates will wind up an hour soap or half-hour is not yet determined, but that it is being developed as an hour show.

So, after reading what George Cheeks, the CBS President & CEO had to say about ‘The Gates’, are you even more excited for what looks to the first new network soap in 25 years? Comment below.

Bernard joined General Hospital back in 1984 as Terry Brock, the daughter of the abusive D.L. Brock (played by David Groh). The 2024 Daytime Emmys will take place at the Westin Bonaventure in downtown Los Angeles. Back in December of 2023, the delayed 50th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards were also held at that venue. Lifetime Achievement honoree, nominations, host, and additional information will be announced in the coming weeks.

In a statement, Adam Sharp, President and CEO of NATAS noted, “We eagerly anticipate our return in June as we once again partner with CBS to recognize the exceptional and talented individuals who make daytime television great. We’re thrilled to kick off our second half-century of the Daytime Emmys.”

The Daytime Emmy Awards have recognized outstanding achievement in television programming and crafts since 1974, honoring work in a variety of categories, including daytime dramas, talk shows, instructional programming, hosting, culinary, and legal/courtroom programs. In 2021, NATAS and the Television Academy jointly announced plans to realign the Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards to be organized by content genre, as opposed to program airtime.

The 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will once again be produced by NATAS and Associated Television International (ATI), which produced Daytime Emmy Award ceremonies on The CW in 2009 and on CBS in 2010, 2011, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
