Ellen DeGeneres to End Her Talk Show After Its 19 Season

Ellen DeGeneres informed her staff yesterday that she has made the decision to end her talk show after its upcoming 19th season.  She will sit down with Oprah Winfrey on the May 13th episode of the The Ellen DeGeneres Show to discuss her decision to step away.

In an exclusive interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Ellen shared: “When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged – and as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore.”

The show’s end comes on the heels of all of the turmoil last summer when several former and current employees accused Ellen of fostering a toxic work environment.  As well, several key producers were let-go as a result.

When speaking with THR, DeGeneres said of last summer’s revelations and accusations against her: “It was four solid months. And you have to understand, in that time, someone got into our house and robbed us and I lost four animals — three cats and a dog died. It was a tsunami. When it started, with that stupid ‘someone couldn’t look me in the eye’ or whatever the first thing was, it’s like a crest of a wave. Like, ‘This isn’t going to be that big of a wave.’ And then it just keeps getting bigger and bigger until it was out of control. And I really, honestly, felt like, ‘I don’t deserve this. I don’t need this. I know who I am. I’m a good person.’  And I was sitting back going, ‘If I was someone watching this, I would think, ‘Well, there must be some truth to it because it’s not stopping.’ Of course they’re going to believe this because I’m not addressing it because I was told not to and you can imagine what that felt like. And it’s a lot to live up to. I started saying “be kind to one another” because I really believe people should be kind to one another and so it was easy clickbait to say, ‘Oh, the be kind lady isn’t so kind.’ … I am kind, I’m also a woman and I’m a boss.”

Earlier this morning, The Daily Mall UK reported that Ellen DeGeneres and Warner Brothers, were expected to make an announcement that she will end her talk show after the 2021-2022 season.  According to their sources, DeGeneres told her team she “has had enough and told her team that she’s done.”

It should be noted that the The Ellen DeGeneres Show has seen a steady decline in the ratings as well.  The ratings for total households from February 2020 to February 2021 were down 40% in New York City and Chicago; and in Los Angeles it lost 59%.

Ellen’s talk show has produced over 3,000 episodes.

So, what do you think of Ellen deciding to conclude her talk show? Comment below.

I would not be surprised, given the current climate where her talk show is concerned. That being said, I’ve always loved her attitude when watching the show, and do believe it stood at a time when things were not as good, and she did bring smiles to the faces of those who watched and visited. However, given the source cited, I will await to see what comes out of it.

Can we have Guiding Light back? I’ll even take As the World Turns…maybe they can both be merged into a supersoap. I want my stories to continue!

Delonjo, this is a wonderful idea. How I miss those shows! So many memories and great actors’ performances. They were part of my childhood and adulthood as well. Those inane shows that replaced them were inane and insulting.

I Stan with Ellen the human being, because of the impact she made on other people’s lives. For me personally her show always made me feel better and It also gave me a reason to smile and laugh and feel a bit more hopeful especially during this trying time right now with the pandemic, which has been very difficult for everyone. Ellen’s no different than any of us and even she’s not perfect but nobody else is. But overall The impact of what Ellen has done with her show is the root of who she is as a person, a… Read more »

I think it’s a very sad thing to see her go out like this. I loved watching her show because she made me happy. Her entire show, from guests to the music man, to the “helpers” made me smile each time I watched.

It’s very easy to judge because most of us are outsiders to what really went on at the show.

However, I believe Ellen and stand with her. I thank her for bring positivity to our TV screen each day for so many years.

Mike Richards Out as EP of ‘Jeopardy!’ and ‘Wheel of Fortune’

What has become of the beloved game show treasure Jeopardy!, since the death of its iconic Alex Trebek, will surely at some point be made into a movie with backstage drama galore and breaking headlines news all along the way.

Now comes an official statement from Sony Pictures Television that they have now let-go of Mike Richards from his duties as executive producer of both Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune.

This comes after Richards controversial choice as the new syndicated host amid allegations, lawsuits and what seemed to be the final straw, The Ringer’s report and findings of insensitive and sexist comments made by Richards on The Randumb Show, a podcast he hosted in 2013 and 2014.

Suzanne Prete, EVP, Business and Strategy, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!, sent out an internal note to the staff on both shows this morning. The content included that Richards would depart his EP roles effective immediately and Embassy Row’s Michael Davies stepping in to do the job on an interim basis.

According to Deadline, the note read as follows:

Dear Team,

I’m writing to let you know that Mike will no longer be serving as EP of Wheel and Jeopardy! effective immediately.  We had hoped that when Mike stepped down from the host position at Jeopardy! it would have minimized the disruption and internal difficulties we have all experienced these last few weeks. That clearly has not happened.  Michael Davies from Embassy Row has agreed to help with production on an interim basis until further notice. Michael and I will work together with all of you in the weeks ahead to ensure that production remains on schedule and we do not miss a beat as we head into the new season.

I know this has been a challenging time for the entire team, and I want to thank you all for your cooperation and professionalism over these last few weeks. As Ravi mentioned last week, I will be more involved in the day-to-day on our shows moving forward and I am looking forward to working closely with all of you.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything.

So, what do you think of all the twists and turns that have now led to Richards ousting as host and his EP duties on two game show? Comment below.
