Howarth is now set to play the role of Mason Bridge, an award-winning reporter from the Central City Picture News, whose assigned to shepherd new employee Iris West (Candice Patton), but their relationship becomes complicated when Bridge begins to investigate Barry’s mentor, Dr. Wells (Tom Cavanagh)!

The Flash is based on the DC comic from Warner Bros TV and Berlanti Productions, about Barry Allen, aka The Flash (Grant Gustin), a Central City assistant police forensics investigator who arrives in Starling to look into a series of unexplained robberies that may have a connection to a tragedy in his past.

Good for him. He is a super talent and he is wasted on GH!

Great news for such a talented guy!! And I agree with Timmm..He is wasted on GH, but he makes the best of it and makes his scenes watchable.

@Timmm and Omar

Roger Howarth… is wasted at GH

fizzled out… gone…. near done… Carly and Sonny

it’s the writers faults… they don’t know what to do with them

Roger Howarth…. like Michelle Stafford, and Maura West…. and now Billy Miller… have that it factor… great acting… that supersedes them…

If he marries Carly…. for his own agenda… at revenge or what not… just to : what? stiff Sonny…. there’s no rhyme or reason… it just doesnt compute… where is Franco edge.. his appetite? his drive

he was great as nuTodd … still sparked as Paul on ATWT… and : he’s hangingon by a thread… this site… because he’s talented…. GH ???? !!!!!

honest to god… if they havent figured this out by now…

steer him away from Carly…
pit him with Nina… if that’s the ultimatum
perhaps she’s got a lot of the family fortune that he can wedge against any and all of Port Charles… to give him stamina

there’s no reason to pull for Franco…. i’d like to

I love Roger he always leaves me wanting more…He is to me one of the Top three actors in daytime…he is awesome…I hope he stays on GH…he is killing the Franco role…

Roger’s Franco is totally different than 1st Franco..
Roger owns this/his Franco..
I love Franco!!
JF’s Franco’s Franco is long dead and replaced with an awesome Franco..
Rogers Franco is fathoms above and different than James Franco was…

luvin my Franco .. RH is phenomenal!!

He is great. Not a fan of James Franco and not a fan of Franco.

All I can think of is Sting singing, “If you love somebody, set them free.”

I concur. He is ready for prime time and for me, the only one who can play Franco is Franco.

Well, dear Harry..
there have been at least a 100 characters replaced, recreated in the soaps.. it is the norm..
But!!
Rogers taking over Franco was grandiose greatness..!!
Non but Roger could be this new and improved Franco, and Franco is now his .. heh!!
and I’m luvin him !!

I really, really, really do not like Sting…LOL…

Harry….All I can think of is “Every Step You Take,” courtesy of that hideously tacky necklace cam! And CeeCee….I really, really, really do not like the current incarnation of Sting….what with his and his weirdo, inane wife and their tantric sex tell-alls and other such nonsense,, but when he was with “The Police” he had some great songs and videos.

He is not wasted in GH..
His franco is awesome and none other than Roger could have played the role..
RH is great as Franco..
I do not drag years of old baggage with me into new stories, I just enjoy the now..
Roger is excellent as his Franco, I could just hug him!!

Never forget..
Roger accepted the Franco role because he wanted to play Franco, not to make you disgruntled lol
Roger wanted to be Franco, and make him his.. and he did just that 🙂

gotta love Roger and Franco !!

if it wasn’t for james franco the franco character wouldn’t exist he created the role

I agree . I love him on GH as Franco and I look forward to seeing him on Flash. I’m a fan of the show and have not missed an episode of Flash. I have been a long time admirer of RH’s work .

I don’t think of Roger as James Franco’s Franco….I kinda look at him as Todd now known as Franco. Sort of a merged person. The point, for me, as I’ve mentioned on many posts…is that the Franco he was handed was an imbecile…other than his quest to rescue Carly from Heather, he was just given one line immature quips. In the past few months they’ve evolved the character, giving Roger more to work with. I tihink he’s doing a fantastic job as a broken man who opened himself up to love, made himself completely vulnerable…only to have been betrayed and made a fool of. Now, high on revenge, we get to see the devious mind, the art of revenge, the game-playing spiral of emotional jabs he’s about to unleash. Can’t wait! So yes, his work on other shows is well-deserved; I just hope he’s staying put on GH!

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say it, su00000 loves Franco/Roger!

R C should have given him a brand new character. I Do Not Like the New Franco.

I agree. I thought they should have made Roger a long lost Quartermaine then he and Carly could be the next generation of the fighting Quartermaines ala Alan and Monica. (Credit to Jim–Leave it to Beaver who originally suggested as much).

Su000 I am a big believer in soap recasts. However, Franco is not your regular soap opera role. I believe Franco is the manifestation of James Franco’s energetic, slightly mocking, satirical creative conception. Didn’t James Franco appear to be a school boy having great fun during recess? I don’t feel he was ever supposed to last after James Franco’s cameo appearance ended. To me, casting Roger as Franco set him up for failure negating any pre disposition for character driven stories.
Franco had to be redeemed if he was going to be romantically paired with Carly. How does on redeem a sadistic, maniacal serial killer? Enter a fast food approach–give Franco the convenient brain tumor and toss him the heroic white hat and have him save the lives of women, children and the life of his former victim, Michael. Enter Carly. We know Carly to be fiercely protective of her children and her friends–she is the protective Mama Bear. The Carly we know and sometimes love would never lie down with the man who had her virginal son raped in prison anymore than she would sleep with the man who tormented her beloved Jason.
The end result left Roger looking a bit confused,as if he didn’t know how to play this character and so it appeared that he gave up. I understand he’s doing better now that the old Franco seems to be resurfacing but turning him back into a one dimensional villain doesn’t seem to be the answer either.
I believe Roger is a brilliant actor and yes, he deserved better. I am happy for him and will be sure to watch him on Primetime.

Harry…great analysis of Roger and the Franco dilemma! I agree with a lot of what you said…but that’s why I look at Roger’s Franco as Todd. I know I’ve said this before and it doesn’t sit well with some but that’s who he’s playing in my opinion. And it’s not because I can’t separate him from OLTL…it’s just that the personality traits are way more similar to Todd than to the original Franco created for James. I think the complete lunacidal maniac played by James Franco was brilliant and I loved the fun he had and brought to the role. It was one craaaaazy ride. Roger’s Franco was immediately portrayed differently for all the reasons you mentioned…so my mind just started watching THIS Franco as a new character. In this capacity I found, as I also mentioned so many times…that he was an immature idiot. LOL. Couldn’t stand him!!! But then…with the advent of his new job at the hospital, his regained sense of worth…and his rapport with Nina…a yet newer personality emerged. This one was sarcastic instead of idiotic, wise instead of gullible, and strong instead of weak. I’m enjoying this incarnation…and wrong or right I still see Todd…not Franco…I don’t care what they call him…and I’m loving seeing Roger coming back to life complete with side glances, sneers and tantrums.

Rebecca, well said. Yes, you’re correct and I do see myself eventually assimilating Todd with Franco.
I guess in order to accept Franco I have to let go of my preconceived notions of who Franco was. You are very adept at explaining the contrary viewpoint–thank you for doing so with such insightful diplomacy.

Hey, Harry…and thank YOU…lol. I always like replying to your posts. They’re intelligent, well thought out and a lot of the time fun/funny! That’s what makes this site fun! Engaging viewpoints. I really do understand your analysis; you’re very right in your critique..my contrary view is my interpretation…I’ve been feeling that way about this character for a while.

Franco’s Franco can’t be duplicated. It really was a hilarious, devious, maniacal portrayal that was his and his alone…due to the lawsuit we know that Ron et company had to come up with other characters for the OLTL 3 pretty quickly. I always felt that they kept them close to their “former selves” but to get around the legal hassles they just slapped them with different names/history.

I agree SU0000!!!! he is not wasted on GH!! Franco serves many purposes. He’s well adept at holding Carly’s purse for her when she goes shopping.
WOOH HOOH!

I’ll take a look…he will not leave Port Charles, will he? Please say NO !!

I hope he doesn’t leave either– his character has such a nice chemistry going with Nina–it will be a shame to lose that. I am looking forward to see the character Franco interact with nuJason. Yet, it looks like they could be painting his character into a corner if he goes on psycho again and harms Carly in some way. I am hoping the writers aren’t going make his revenge for her cheating on him something so despicable that they will have no choice but to write the character off. Carly’s cheating ways should be exposed–but not in a villainous way– creative yes, but not evil.

it’s time for the GH production to leave well enough alone…

and simply separate Franco and Carly… for Nina
and simply separate Sam and Silas… for Patrick

it just makes sense for GH to pair Sonny and Carly… as this part of the GH equation.. which they’e tried…. yes… tried… to make grandeur… has squalled … doesn’t interest

that would be Sonny, Carly, Michael, Kiki, Sean, Olivia, … what a shame… and to think… Kelly Sullivan held them all together….

I don’t know… now it would seem.. that if the Fluke doesnt do in Sonny… Julian tried… and if Franco doesn’t smear… who cares at this point

Carly is not interesting enough.. thank god her scenes with her mother still vibe

the sooner they separate whats not working

Franco and Carly
Sam and Silas

the further away Nina gets from Silas… she’s so much better with the rest of the cast

I can tolerate Sam monotone voice… with Patrick.. because … visually… they sizzle and ignite SEXY

let’s get the heat back with Ava and Morgan… not that it ever left them…

after watching Tracy dumbed down ALL summer…. LOL… watching her with the whole enchilada must be worth it

it’s november sweeps… so… we’ll bait hook and ante up muster… this does work for GH

Oh, I’m with you, Mary. I abhor violence in any form, real or fictional.
As you say, I wonder if this is heralding an exit for Roger. Many of us put our hearts into seeing Nina and he as a couple.
Also, some feel that Roger’s talents are wasted on GH….so, perhaps TPTB will listen and give him the role He deserves….hate to lose him.
Franco has a lot of potential, if honed. And, no one can play a multitude of different characters than Roger.
I realize that he is hurt from Carly’s duplicity, but sometimes a bruised pride is much more difficult to swallow than hurt feelings…..especially for a man, I would think.
I am hoping that Carly and Sonny will be exposed by none other than Michael….that’s ‘gotta’ hurt. It is time for justice to be served.

I too hope Roger isn’t leaving GH. That would be a real loss…especially since his character is just getting into full gear…and have several (including myself) have mentioned he’s great with his alter ego…Nina.

I’m looking forward to his revenge! I don’t think he’s planning on violence, although what’s with Olivia’s vision of Heather wielding the knife. Perhaps she goes rogue off the plan??? But I do think he’s going to do a spectacular reveal of Sonny and Carly’s duplicity…

Wonder if this is going to be reminiscent of when Sonny exposed Claudia…which led to chaos, Carly’s kidnapping and Michael’s “first’ murder.

Either way, I’m looking forward to the revenge no matter what form it takes…and I’m definitely going to check RH on Flash. Haven’t yet watched the show but was curious about it before this announcement.

Thank you, Patrick . Could not have ‘penned ‘ it better myself. It is so clear, why can’t TPTB see it? LOL.

@davonCT. Franco James did not create the Franco character….the writers did. Recasts come and go. Roger is making Franco his own, with a different spin…..I hope he stays on the straight and narrow…I love Roger.
Are you from Avon, Conn.?

That’s not actually true, Cee Cee. James Franco wanted to play a sociopathic performance artist–he wrote most of his dialogue. Even his real life mother played his mother.
Heck, the character is even named Franco. They pretty much gave him carte blanche to do what he wanted with his self creation.

WOW! I did not know that, Harry…as I said…I’m not well versed in GH. I just assumed the part was written for him. It makes me wonder about this actor to ask to play such a role. Very strange.
Thank you for the info.

@davonCT. You are right about the Franco role. I stand corrected by harry…I apologize for naysaying you…Pax.

James Franco, I mean. LOL.

Hmmmmm…can’t decide who will break her out first CeeCee…obviously Franco’s wheels are spinning…as are Shawn’s…but I don’t think she’ll turn on Franco. She may get “carried away” trying to help him…her love for her sons is great. Whenever she believes they love her she seems to be overtaken with motherly love/maternal (Heather style) instinct…out to kill the women she doesn’t deem right for them. So I’m thinking that knife is meant for Carly and/or Sonny…

Who knows? Maybe Franco is one step ahead of Sonny. If she’s there and supporting him…no one would suspect her of killing him…and Franco needs to think ahead and take away Sonny’s scapegoat. Or, maybe he wants Heather to “spill the beans”…thus escaping retaliation by laying the blame on her? Dunno…which is good I guess. Makes Hallowedding much anticipated!

Rebecca. What if Sonny and his lackey Sean get to Heather before Franco and whatever plan he has for her ‘prison break’….what if she turns on Franco? I suspect Sonny is counting on this turn of events. Maybe we are assuming and being too complacent, and then, BOOM…a surprise we did not expect.
I hope everything goes according to everything Franco desires.
Also, it would be so rewarding, for me, at least, if Michael finally finds out Sonny murdered AJ and Carly’s part in it….happy dance !!

It is interesting that both Howarth and John Wesley Shipp (who plays Henry, Barry’s dad and played Barry himself on the original TV series 25 years ago) played on the same soaps: GL (Shipp was Kelly, Howarth was Jory), ATWT (Shipp was Doug Cummings, Howarth was the last Paul Stenbeck), OLTL (Shipp was Eddie, Howarth was Todd) and LOVING (Shipp was Carter, a character that he originated on AMC and Howarth was Kent ).

i am very happy for Roger. I, a little worried that he’s on he way out at #GH. I can’t imagine where the writers will be able to go with the character if he carries out his revenge. He’s on everyone’s hit list and I’m afraid he’s not going to make it.

That’s great news for Roger, he’s a great actor, so he deserves all the success in the world. I hope he’s able to continue balancing GH with his primetime gigs, cause I’ve really been enjoying his work as Franco lately.

I’m so happy for Roger!!! He is a super talented actor. I’m happy he is finally going out for other and getting them. I don’t watch any CW programming but I’m going to start now. Way to go Roger!!!

Does this mean he’s leaving GH?
I hope so because his character Franco doesn’t do him any justice. I ♥ed him on OLTL as Todd Manning , but GH’s new writing staff & executive producer make his acting less than steller.
Good Luck Roger!

I couldn’t agree more: Hated that they brought the character of Franco back and put poor Roger in it. Still, I’d hate to lose him on GH. Good luck to Roger, in whatever he does.

I’m confused Mamasan when you say GH’s new EP & writing staff make Howarth’s acting less than steller. GH’s EP, Frank Valentini & Head Writer Ron Carlivati & many of the writing staff is the same team that Howarth worked under at OLTL. When they exited at OLTL after the final show & came on at GH Howarth followed.

Sorry, mamasan….Roger’s acting IS STELLAR , regardless. Perhaps the role he has been given may not be up to par, but his acting is unimpaired .
Are you saying you want him gone from GH?…..this character is just starting to get steam !! Watch him fly…..

I did say he is a great actor. I don’t feel that the way his character has been used is not as stellar as u think. Roger’s talent is being wasted as Franco.
As a person who has the right to my own opinion your email to me was not appreciated. I DON’T LIKE BEING ATTACKED!!!
I know the writers are from OLTL. That was my point! This is GH not OLTL. I’ve been watching GH since 1970. It was my favorite soap. Also watched AMC & OLTL. Those were the 2 soaps cancelled. If GH wants to stay on the air they need to think & write like the GH most know & ♥.
Since the departure of Steve Burton & the lack of storyline for most originals (until lately) the soap for me is not worth really watching. I tune into Y&R now because Steve Burton is on there.
Life is too short for me to allow anyone to spoil my day.
As for Roger, if he stays on GH or leaves I don’t care. He makes his own choices.

Watch itll be ‘great for him’ because a soap star is doing primetime…so in the future lets give the same congratulations, happy for him or her, when its the other way around and a primetime or movie actors appears on a soap(theyve actually been doing it since the late Mary Stuart was cast on SFT back in the 1950s)…i agree with Timmm that RHs talents have been wasted on GH but im seeing a change for the better when Franco is paired with either Nina or Heather!!!

RH has moonlighted on primetime before. In 2003 he had a recurring role on Dawson’s Creek (my fav show at that time-don’t judge me..lol) while he was on OLTL. He also had a recurring role on Californication earlier this year while filming GH. Plus he does a lot of primetime guest spots. I’m sure you know all of this, though. I’m full of useless information.

Billy Miller had a recurring role on the primetime series Ringer w/Sarah Michelle Gellar on 2011 while he had a front burner story on Y&R.

Win/win for all involved

It sure is a win/win for all…i just wish soaps werent still snubbed by many in Hollywood and treated as equals to primetime shows…soaps have some of the best hard working actors in the business, outlasted primetime shows, and have a very loyal fan base…that should mean something…any actor…primetime, movie or stage should be welcomed to daytime whether as a regular or a guest…it should not be considered a step down for any of them…and as a fan, im proud to have been a soap watcher for 50 years!!!

Good for RH he is such a great actor. I wish him the best. I will def watch just for him.

Absolutely the best daytime actor – it’s about time he got a great prime time role.

Excellent news! Love Roger Howarth and glad to see him getting different gigs. I’ll be adding The Flash to my DVR. A lot of GH actors have been making good use of their downtime lately. It’s great to see the cast all over my TV:)

I probably will. Very good actor

is he leaving GH? Then myselfish soul is not happy.

Roger will be with GH..
He did a HBO show while on GH..
”Howarth has also been recurring on the most recent season of Californication.”
He will be in ”The Flash” the as well as GH, no worries..

GH lets its’ actors do other projects,,
(probably why GH has the best of the best actors)

Su000, if you say it enough it might be true?

Fantastic for him! He is a very talented actor, have loved his performances since OLTL!

I totally Agree

I will definitely be watching “The Flash”, now. Huge Roger Howarth fan from back in the early “Todd Manning” years. Hope he’ll still be with #GH!

I am already watching the Flash–so it will fun to see RH on it–

I will watch Roger work anywhere anytime anyplace any show that I can I love to watch this amazing actor work!!!!

yah!!

GO ROGER!! you go man!!

I love you as Franco!! …. I will love you as Mason Bridge !!

Roger is a brilliant actor, no matter which role he plays he owns it ..

.. I looooove that man! 😉

The best actor in daytime but he plays the worst character in daytime.

I know right… who would have thought… the one actor… who cares about daytime.. would be riddled with this misbegotten… role

left by the wayside… be it RH or GH not knowing what to do with him

tragic

he’s so easy on the eyes… and the mind wanders… he’ll always have that

Wooh Hooh! No one can play Franco but Roger. He is a rocking, talkin, walkin righteous dude and I worship the ground he walks on.
No one can play Jason Morgan but Billy Miller either. The sun rises and sets in Miller’s eyes.
I am giddy with excitement just thinking about it. Time to dust off my GH pom’s poms!!!

Love this show. Glad to hear one of my all time faves is joining the show. Break a leg RoHo!

Oh no!!!! Does that mean he is leaving GH???

No..
GH actors are free to do other projects..
Roger has done other’s, no problem..

NO. Actors can do both chew gum and walk at the same time. If I can do it, anyone can.

Looking forward to seeing him. Love that show!

Yes, I will be watching! What a talent!

Regardless of what our thoughts are on Roger being cast as the new Franco, it doesn’t take away from the fact that he is truly talented and owns most of the scenes he is in. I, especially like his scenes with Michelle Stafford. I also like how it seems that he improvs a lot of scenes to make them more comical. He has great comedy timing with Robin Mattson, too. As unbelievable as Heather’s antics are- (as well as Faison’s, Jerry’s, Victor’s) I do enjoy her scenes with Franco and Luke.

I was just telling my son this weekend that I wouldn’t be surprised to see Roger show up on The Flash since he and Jesse Martin are friends. I love it when I’m right. Also the character is only recurring. He could easily do both and the more Roger on my screen the better.

That said I do not like Franco. Whoever said he chose to play Franco is wrong. He was already under contract. He played the character he was told to play. As to whether he WANTED to play Franco, we don’t know he hasn’t said and I don’t believe in making assumptions about what people are thinking. Hate Franco with Carly. That is wrong on so many levels. Not the least of which is that the actors chemistry has evaporated with Roger as Franco. I am however enjoying him since he proposed to Carly. Nobody does bad like Roger Howarth. I just wish it wasn’t a retread story from OLTL and ATWT. I half expect him to say “hell, No”. Right before he plays the recording of Carly and Sonny.

But I digress. Congratulations Roger. I look forward to seeing you in the Flash.

I could not agree more. W. R.

I hope these extra roles will keep him happy, and staying at GH! I’ll watch the Flash as I have the CW app. I still have the old episodes of Prey and OLTL on VHS… gotta have me my Roger H. fixes! 🙂

I hope they don’t kill off Roger’s Franco. I enjoy watching Roger so much, don’t care who he plays really.

Have always liked Roger and glad that Ron saved him as Todd on OLTL and liked the character when he moved to GH. Was never a Franco fan (either the character or the actor) and so when Roger started playing him, I was leery. But, true to Roger’s past soap roles, he’s made Franco sympathetic and interesting.

Love Franco planning on exposing Sonny and Carly at the wedding (classic soap!).. unfortunately both Sonny and Carly usually get away with everything and do zero jail time for their crimes, so watching this story unfold is, at times, tiresome and it’s hard to invest in the outcome.

But, Franco’s simmering anger is something fun to watch even if I know it will go nowhere.

Hi Andrew…

I think this time it might; I think we’re about due for Michael to learn the truth…turn away from Sonny and Carly and become a Q. Hoping it’s at the hands of Franco…and that somehow he manages to pull it off without taking himself down in the process…

Well, Andrew, it might go somewhere…….it might go to the moon and join Alice!!

That’s a definite possibility … but Sonny will not go to jail for killing AJ. Although if everyone on GH went to jail for killing someone (or covering up their knowledge of the crime), the show would lose half its cast. 🙂 As someone said upthread (or it might have been on the Previously website), at least Sonny isn’t being written as a romantic hero anymore. He is actually being written as the thug he really is.

I enjoy roger howarth is is by far one of thee best actor on daytime soaps. I like his rage of acting keep it up.

Matt Bomer Sums Up His ‘Guiding Light’ Run as Ben Reade in 1 Minute as He Reflects On Time in Springfield

Guiding Light alum, Matt Bomer (ex-Be Reade) was honored with the Vanguard Award at the 43rd Miami Film Festival just a few weeks ago. The award recognized his body of work, his significant impact on film and television and his current roles including on Apple TV+’s movie, Outcome, which also features All My Children legend, Susan Lucci (ex-Erica Kane).

While at the festival, Bomer participated in a live sit-down conversation with Josh Horowitz of the Happy Sad Confused Podcast where he was asked about his early days in television and soap operas, all leading to Horowitz asking Matt to give a 1 minute recap of the life and times of Guiding Light’s Ben Reade!

Bomer played the role of the scheming Ben from 2001-2003, and as discussed, it was never Matt’s intent to land on a soap or stay for any significant length of time, as he has other aspirations as an actor after graduating from the acclaimed Carnegie-Mellon University in Drama.

Photo: AppleTV+

THE ROAD TO GUIDING LIGHT

Speaking with Horowitz, he explained how he came to Guiding Light, “I’d done two episodes on All My Children with Susan Lucci, who’s in Outcome, who I got to just come full circle with. Susan had spoken at Carnegie Mellon and three months later I was on set with her. (On All My Children) I was playing her daughter’s ex lesbian lover’s, new fiancé.”

After that, Bomer was asked to audition for a role on Guiding light, and the rest is soap history. When Horowitz asked Matt to give the lowdown of everything that happened to Ben Reade in story in one minute, here’s what Matt shared!

Bomer began, “He’s a trust fund baby who bet his fraternity brothers that he could be the first to deflower the town virgin, who is like the young female heroine on the show. Then, of course, he falls in love with her, but then she finds out about his attempt to deflower her, so she dumps him. Then, he falls in love with this other girl, but then he loses his trust fund. So, he turns to the only life that one can, which is to become a male sex worker. All of my clients were like women in their forties. I was like 22. I would meet them (on set) at 6:00 AM and do intimacy scenes by 9:00 am. Then, he goes crazy because his girlfriend finds out that he was being a sex worker, and so she dumps him. He goes crazy, kills four people, then kidnaps her to a remote cabin in the woods where he holds her hostage with a syringe full of insulin. Then, when he gets busted, he injects himself with it, but then hangs on one extra day in the hospital to apologize for all his sins.”

Photo: CBS

On his way out Bomer shared, “I told the (GL) writers that when I got there, ‘Look, I’m not not going be here that long. So give me the craziest thing you’ve ever given anybody,’ and they obliged. But my favorite thing was after all that, I remember I was like in my dying makeup, walking off the soundstage and a writer comes up to me and goes, ‘If you ever want to come back, we’ve got it figured out.'”

SUPERMAN

After Guiding Light, Bomer found himself not only in the running for the next Superman movie but to play the lead role, and landing the part. But, as Matt revealed, the movie was scrapped and he never got the chance to play the man of steel.

“I was such an unknown at the time,” recounted Bomer. “I went in on a cattle call, then I got a phone call from the casting people. Then, I went and met with a director and read with an actress. Then, I went back in and screen tested in the Superman suit and signed the contract. I know that I was the director’s choice for the role and then. … it happens, (the movie got canned). It was a great script. It was called Fly By and it was more about Clark Kent when he was younger. He was like a college student trying to figure what it is to have all these powers and how to try to be a normal person and Superman at the same time.  It was all so surreal to be going from a total cattle call to that.”

You can check out the full conversation with Bomer below.

Do you remember Matt’s time as Ben Reade on Guiding Light? How do you think he did when in 1 minute he told the life and times of Ben? Let us know via the comment section below.

Tom Pelphrey Takes on The Role of ‘Jesus Christ’ with Y&R’s Courtney Hope as ‘Mary’ in New Podcast Series

Published

Since first making a name for himself as Reva’s (Kim Zimmer) son, Jonathan Randall on Guiding Light, Tom Pelphrey’s (ex-ATWT and GL) post-soap career has featured many complex and dark roles in television and motion pictures. Now comes perhaps, Pelphrey’s most stunning role when he will play Jesus Christ in a new four–part audio series podcast, called The Christ.

The series is from the Faith Podcast Network who will be releasing the series for Easter. It is being billed as “an audio epic and the first ever full-scale audio dramatization of Jesus’ life across four immersive episodes using cinematic-quality sound, music and performances.” The podcast series will feature more than 100 different characters and can be heard at TheChristPodcast.com

Joining The Ozark and Task star in the cast are some other high-profile Hollywood names including: David Ovelowo as Pontius Pilot, Paul Walter Hauser as John the Baptist, Patricia Heaton as the host and John Rhys-Davies as the narrator. In addition, none other than The Young and the Restless, Courtney Hope (Sally Spectra) also is featured as Mary, the mother of Jesus.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The Christ comes from a creative team that includes writer and director Paul Cuschieri, co-director and producer Mark Ramsey and producer Jim Young.” The series drops during Holy Week, with the first episode debuting on March 30. A new episode will be released each day through April 2, scheduled accordingly so that the entire series will be available by Good Friday on April 3.

The official logline says The Christ will cover “the life, death and legacy of Jesus of Nazareth. Through betrayal, courage, suffering and hope, the series explores how one man’s story reshaped history — and redefined love, authority and sacrifice.”

Pelphrey who announced he has 12-years of sobriety back in 2025, shared why this project was of importance to him, “Sharing about sobriety and faith are so personal to me, and it means so much to me. The other thing you notice is when people are sharing things, you could say a word to a thousand people, and a thousand people hear a different version of that word. In all humility, to share something that matters to you, you first have to come to an understanding and acceptance that you’re surrendering how it’s going to be heard or what it means to anyone listening. You have no control over it. That’s been an amazing process to go through.”

So, what do you think of Tom Pelphrey playing the audio version of Jesus Christ and Courtney Hope playing Mary, Mother of Jesus? Excited to hear the story of Christ via this podcast series? Share your thoughts via the comment section below.

‘Guiding Light’s’ Kim Zimmer Reflects on Brilliant Scenes with Tom Pelphrey After Initially Telling Producers, ‘Hire Any of Them But the Last Guy’

Throughout its 57-year run on daytime, Guiding Light introduced television audiences to many actor who would go on to have major careers in motion pictures, primetime television and the stage. One such is the incredible Tom Pelphrey (Task, Mank, Ozark, Outer Range, et al.), who from the minute he debuted on the CBS soap took soap viewers by storm for his raw, relatable and emotional turn as Reva (Kim Zimmer) and Prince Richard Winslow’s (Bradley Cole) son, Jonathan Randall.

In the complicated storyline, Jonathan was conceived and born while Reva was suffering from amnesia and believing herself to be Princess Catherine while living in San Cristobel. As Jonathan grew up his life was torn apart making him a vengeful, menacing young man, who under it all was deeply wounded and who felt abandoned and forgot about.

Kim Zimmer won four Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Reva Shayne, while Tom Pelphrey took home two Daytime Emmys for the Outstanding Younger Actor in a Daytime Drama Series for his performance. On-screen, together, they were a riveting pairing which included many a tense scene including when Jonathan choked out Reva.

During last week’s Guiding Light reunion livestream with Zimmer, Bradley Cole (ex-Richard and Jeffrey, GL) and Laura Wright (ex-Cassie, GL, now Carly, GH) on the You Tube’s Michael Fairman Channel, the three actors reminisced about their time together as romantic pairings: Reva/Richard, Cassie/Richard, Reva/Jeffrey etc, but also talked about many of their co-stars and their deeply personal feelings of what Guiding Light meant to all of them.

REVA AND JONATHAN WERE SOAP OPERA GOLD

Though the years, it’s been no secret that Zimmer, did not initially want Tom Pelphrey cast as her son, because as she admitted, in the audition process with her, she was scared of him based on the power of his performance in the scene.

Kim recalled, “I went in (to the producers) right after I auditioned like seven guys, and I said, ‘Hire any of them, but the last guy.’ And they all looked at me like I had six heads, because they had already decided they were going to cast him. And then when I said that, they were like, ‘we’re definitely going to cast him now! That’s the feeling they wanted. They knew he scared me.”

The beloved GL heroine said that once she began working in a scene with Pelphrey, all was A-OK! “It was almost immediate once we started really working together, and I could trust the story,” shared Kim. “It was such a bizarre story that I was being given, again (also referencing Reva’s Clone story as the other), that I was hesitant about that. But once we started really working together, there was no question that they had made the right decision.”

In fact, fans loved Reva and Jonathan so much, they would vote them top couple as Kim remembers, “And, you know, in the soap magazines, we got voted, ‘Best couple,’ and we weren’t a love couple. We were a mother and son. That was like the biggest compliment to me –  we’d get nominated as ‘Outstanding Couple.’

ONE OF THE FINEST ACTORS IN THE HISTORY OF GUIDING LIGHT

Kim’s real-life son, Jake Weary has also made quite the name for himself in TV and motion pictures and Pelphrey also bonded many years ago: “When my son was living in LA, he and Jake would hang out together. They had mutual friends and they got to know each other pretty well, which I love. Jake actually asked me recently if I had any favorite Guiding Light scenes that I could remember. And I said, ‘Anything with HB (Larry Gates), Billy Lewis (Jordan Clarke) and Tom Pelphrey.

During the livestream, Laura Wright, who worked in many scenes with Pelphrey, added, “In my opinion, Tom took the bar and he raised it. Not just in talent because he had that, but Tom inspired you. He made you want to do like that, and he wanted you to be as great. He just was all around a great guy to work with.”

In case you missed it,  you can check out the Guiding Light live reunion with Kim, Bradley and Laura, followed by some incredible scenes between Tom and Kim as Jonathan and Reva.
