Sofia Mattsson Wraps 7-Year Run as ‘General Hospital’s’ Sasha Gilmore

The Friday, July 18th episode of General Hospital marked the final appearance of Sofia Mattsson as Sasha Gilmore. In story, Sasha has gone to live with her mother and father, Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) and Holly Sutton in France, to protect her daughter Daisy from harm. The episode also signified the end of a short return appearance for Tristan Rogers, who publicly shared on Thursday that he was battling cancer.

In a statement to TV Insider, a GH rep explained the reason for Mattson’s exit: “There was a good time in the storyline for Sofia to leave to pursue other opportunities in film and TV. But she is open for a return in the future.”

General Hospital’s executive producer, Frank Valentini offered, “I love Sofia, she is a great actress and a dear friend. We will miss her, but we wish her the best in all of her future endeavors.”

This week, Sofia’s co-star, Rory Gibson (Michael Corinthos) in his latest interview on the Michael Fairman Channel, spoke on working with her during their short time together on the soap opera, expressing: “She’s the best. Sofia is just one of the loveliest people that I’ve ever met in my life. She’s incredible and she’s so talented and I love working with her.”

Weighing-in on of her favorite storyline highlights during her run, Mattsson related, “I’m a bit of a romantic, so I’m particularly fond of all the love stories! I think her love with Brando (the late Johnny Wactor) was so beautiful and pure. And I really feel like Sasha and Michael (formerly Chad Duell, and now Rory Gibson) have a unique and strong love. I’ve gotten an overwhelmingly positive response to our chemistry since Rory took over the role. Who knows in the future? I’m rooting for Sasha and Michael to reunite one day!”

Saying goodbye to a place you have made your second home for the last seven years, can’t be easy, but Sofia explained how she felt on her last day on set, “It was emotional for sure. Cleaning out my room and knowing that I wouldn’t see all my friends there like usual every other day felt sad. But everyone was so supportive and excited for me. (It was) bittersweet for sure. I’ve had such a great time, but I’m also excited for a new chapter and to continue my acting journey in new projects.”

GH fans will remember that it was back in 2018 when Sofia debuted on the soap opera when the character of Sasha was in collusion with Valentine Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) when she was paid-off to pretend to be Nina Reeves’ (Cynthia Watros) long-lost daughter. Fast-forward to 2025 and Nina and Sasha have be extremely close, and in fact, it was their goodbye to each other earlier this week that had many reaching for the hankies.

So, are you sad to see Sofia Mattsson exit General Hospital? Would you like to see Sasha come back down the line and get back involved with Michael in a romance? Share your thoughts via the comment section below.

I think it is safe to say when storyline requires we will see Sasha, and hopefully it will be Sofia Mattsson. Plus knowing she is with Holly and Robert, it’s a beautiful exit. The gift is that it gave us Tristen Rogers.

I was hoping that they’d discover that it was Willow who was the baby stalker so Sasha could come back. Now that we know that Sofia isn’t coming back anytime soon, does that mean Willow’s crime won’t be discovered? And it looks like it wasn’t her just going insane, and that it was really a premeditated plan so Michael could “ get a taste of his own medicine” ( Willow’s words).

I think Liesl will be the one to expose Willow.. and end Drew.

She was off to a good start yesterday. I was actually surprised at her rant to Nina, after Willow left the room.

I’m thinking…. Damn, when did Dr. Ooblech get an actual conscience??

Somebody has to send Drew down here to become Dragon Chow. Might as well be Liesl. Why not?

What did you think of Liesl telling Nina that Willow had a “ devil smile” cross her face upon hearing how Michael lost a son? Willow looked like Nelle in that instance.

I wasn’t offended by the comparison, because I understood the context. I knew what Dr. Liesl was saying. She knows that Willow ain’t actually anything like me!

Willow’s clearly either being drugged, or Drew’s playing with the magic Tarot cards again and has her brainwashed. If that’s the case, Jason’s probably still carrying one of those around in the pocket of his leather jacket. The one he used to shut off Drew’s own brainwashing back on Cassadine island.

I regrettably think… it’s the sex that Drew has her spellbound by. Wouldn’t it be easier for Carly and Nina just to double slap Willow and yell “Snap out of it! We both did!” Then watch Willow break as she try to grasp that.

I hope you’re right and that it happens sooner rather than later.

My favorite story was when she was being held in that medical facility and kept drugged. That story has me so upset and rattled my nerves because it went on for so long.

I do hope Sasha comes back to the canvas before too long!

Yes. She’s been a really fun part of GH, even when they were driving Sasha literally crazy. I was hoping for a Michael and Sasha reunion. Rory and Sofia had great chemistry. I hope we see her again, and I wish her great success.

It’s just not right. We couldn’t make it work #GH? I certainly hope someday when things change she can come back.

Maybe she didn’t want to stay?

She chose to leave to pursue other opportunities.

No I love her and I really think her and Jason could be great together!! I hope she’s back soon!!!

I am sad to see her go! Sasha is Robert and Holly’s daughter so I know they will replace her…but it won’t be the same. I’m still trying to get over the loss of Sam McCall. Anyway, I appreciate Mattson’s chemistry with the new Michael, Jason, Robert and Cody. She’s got talent in spades.

I’m sure Sophia will do well in her future endeavors. She’s gorgeous and she is a great actress!

I love the actress but the character is played out. Having her with Michael just creates another stupid quadrangle with Willow and Drew. Glad Michael isn’t stuck with yet a 2nd liability as a partner.
Sending her away is the right thing to do.

Her character has been through too much. It was one thing after another. I agree, it’s time to put her on the backburner for a while.

I’m just glad she got a nice ending and it was nice seeing her with Robert. Wow, 7 years. Doesn’t seem like it. Tristan looked great at the end of Thursday’s episode. In Friday’s episode, I could see he was tired, but I know he’s tough. Keep fighting Tristan. We all love you.

I wish she wasn’t leaving, her and Michael would make a great couple.with all the other crazy things going on on GH, it was awesome to see something happy. Wish her the best, please come back, don’t wait too long either.

Love Sophia, but if its her choice to leave then I support her exit, I’m a fan so I’ll watch her in whatever she does, best of luck, and I do hope she visits from time to time.

Loved seeing Tristan Rogers, glad Sasha sought out her Dad, I’ll be praying for Tristan, nothing but good energy and prayers.

Seven years is a good run for a character that wasn’t tied to a core family until her final 10 months.

Kudos to Sofia as she ride through all the tragedies Sasha faced to get an eventual happy ending.

Nina rightfully got a onscreen goodbye, but not Cody or Felicia?

This is a tough goodbye. Sofia’s chemistry with Rory, Steve, Cynthia, Jane, Sonny and Cody has been amazing to watch. I hope this is not goodbye, but simply I will see you soon. Sasha has become a true leading lady on the show since her one-night with Michael. I wish her nothing but success. #heartbroken

Of all the characters to go they let this gem leave! Hoping we see Sofia/Sasha and Daisy in the not distant future!

I’m very sad to see Sofia go. I thought that Sasha and Diasy would leave PC until it was revealed that Willow was the stalker and then they’d return. Now, it seems they’ll be gone for a much longer period of time.
Would someone please just put Drew out of our misery and send Willow to get help so this nightmare can end?!?

I am disappointed in her exit, especially since I do feel like Sasha and Michael (Chad Duell/Robert Adamson/Rory Gibson) deserved more as a pairing; however, Sasha was put through genuine torture porn over the years, and it’s time the character rests, even with a canvas as bloated as General Hospital has been.

Sofia Mattsson did a fine job as Sasha, but the character was often directionless and written off the cuff. The comparison I’d make is Genie Francis as Diana Colville on Days of Our Lives. No character, however; once TPTB gave Sasha a character, it was over with. If you ask me, not making Sasha really Nina’s (Cynthia Watros) daughter was a huge misstep and is when the character should have exited. As a whole, the character of Sasha stayed four to five years too long, honestly.

But I do wish Ms Mattsson the best in wherever her career takes her and would welcome her back sometime [long] down the line.

I am really sorry to see Sasha leave! I had hoped she & Michael would end up falling in love & getting married.

I hope Sasha returns and her and Michael can be together with all 3 kids. That would be awesome. I w a nt drew and Willow exposed for the awful things they have done. Nina do something. Only u can …hopefully LiSEL will…

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

Published

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).

Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.

Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON

Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”

Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).

Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.

“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?

During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.

Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.

You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.

Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Reconnects with Danny; Tristan Roberts Arrives in Port Charles, Lots of Nods to #16

Published

General Hospital’s 16,000th episode was packed with little reminders through points in today’s script that the ABC daytime drama series has set another milestone and it paved the way for the return of fan favorite and newly nominated Daytime Emmy Lead Actor nominee Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The 16,000th episode also introduced viewers to the new surgeon in Port Charles Dr. Tristan Roberts played by Dean Geyer.

Here are the key takeaways and what went down on the July 13 episode: Tristan and Jason are seated next to each other on a plane heading to Port Charles. Throughout the flight, a beaten up Jason has flashbacks to being thrown into, and being held captive in a cell and tortured. It appears Jason is suffering from some form of PTSD from what he was put through after being dragged out of Port Charles by the WSB months ago.

As the plane prepares to land, Tristan tells Jason there would be a car waiting for him once they land and to enjoy the rest of his life. Later, Tristan arrives at the nurses and doctors hub at GH and approaches Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). He tells her his name and that he is the new surgeon on staff.

A REUNION PLUS A HEAD NURSE DEFENDS SONNY

Meanwhile, at the end of the episode, Jason is outside the Quartermaine boathouse looking bewildered when he runs into Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), who is so thrilled to see his father, and the two hugs each other as tears are shed.

Elsewhere, Elizabeth tells Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he thinks its a great idea for him to get the 16th seat on the hospital board, but when it comes times to convince Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) of that, things go awry when Tracy, Laura and Sonny try to work things out. After Tracy launches into Sonny about killing Alan and Monica’s son AJ, Sonny walks away dejected.

Next, Sonny runs into Elizabeth, where he informs her what happened with Tracy. So what’s a head nurse to do? Elizabeth marches into the conference room and reminds Tracy of all the different donations and ways Sonny has contributed to the hospital from the Stone Cates AIDS wing, to the Michael Corinthos Center for Pediatric Head Injuries as well as his constant support each year for the GH Nurses’ Ball.

WSB WAR SCARS

Then, in one of the best parts for longtime fans of the series, Elizabeth talks about her legendary grandparents, Audrey and Steve Hardy and she tells Tracy they would have wanted Sonny to have a seat on the board for all the good that he has done for the hospital. After Elizabeth states Sonny’s case, things took a turn and Tracy and Sonny wound up shaking hands as Sonny is board member #16.

In the how great was it to see Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) together scenes department, the pick-up of last Friday’s cliffhanger is played out as the two former lovers fill each other in on what has gone down in their lives in the last several months including Valentin admitting he had been living in Carly’s attic, and Anna realizing she was kidnapped by Cullum, Sidwell and Cassius Faison. During their conversation, Anna sees the hallucination of Peter August (Wes Ramsey) right while Valentin is standing there.

Courtesy/ABC

Later Anna was on her way to saying goodbye to Valentin, when the two share an emotional hug. After Valentin made his exit, Peter reappeared and warned Anna to not let Valentin distract her because she has important work to do. Anna answers, “I know.”

So, what did you think of General Hospital’s 16,000 episode? What do you think is wrong with Jason? What is the important “work” that Anna has to do? Were you glad to see Sonny get a seat on the hospital board, or not so much. Weigh-in via the comment section. But first, check out the scenes on Jason and Tristan’s long flight to Port Charles.
