Spencer Neville Back On DAYS: What Will Derrick's Return Mean For Paul & Sonny?

Photo: SNevilleTwitter
Last week, viewers of Days of our Lives learned that former “bellhop” Derrick (Spencer Neville) is now back on the canvas and is now an administrative assistant at University Hospital in Salem. Is a true triangle brewing … or, is Derrick on board to push Sonny (Freddie Smith) and Paul (Christopher Sean) closer into each other’s arms?
On last Friday’s DAYS, Sonny was shocked to see Derrick back in the picture while he and Paul were having coffee at the pub. Derrick told Sonny that he and Paul ran into each other at the hospital. Sonny remarked that he didn’t know they had bellhops at the hospital. Off went Paul and Derrick to hang out, where Paul noted that Sonny seemed upset they had plans together.
Christopher Sean on Monday posted a photo from Brad Everett Young of the trio on his Instagram account commenting: “Welcome back Derrick @spencerneville_13 to Salem on @nbcdays @nbctv ! @fmsmith319 and @mrchristophersean with Spencer in this little teaser shot by @bradley206“
So, glad to see Spencer Neville back on DAYS? Is Derrick going to give Sonny a run for his money trying to win the heart of Paul Narita? Share your thoughts and theories in the comment section below!
The only thing I can think of is that with Derrick’s return, a love triangle will be born. Could this be the incentive to push Sonny towards Paul?
It is so crystal clear to me their feelings run deep. Love both Freddie and Chris, whom I’d love to see appear on HAWAII 5-O, again.
Good move I think I’ll start watching again.
I was very happy to see Derrick. Paul needs a story line. I’d like to see a romance between Derrick and Paul. I am not in favor of Paul and Sonny being together. That is exactly what terrified poor Will. Sonny and Paul are better off as loyal friends. Sonny does need a new love in his life. I’m hoping he will meet someone new as he becomes more involved in his family’s business.
I think he should be involved (Paul) with Derrick and of course it makes Sonny jealous (it’s pretty obvious that’s where they are going with this) – but then I think things should turn and we find out that Derrick is a little off-the-wall and feels he is only being “used” by Paul just as a tool to make Sonny sit up and take action. I think they need to give Spencer a chance to show his ACTING chops.
Well, just like the return of Aiden to drag out the pairing of Hope and Rafe, we now have the return of another filler character in Derrick to come between Sonny and Paul…Derrick will have a dark side and will do his best to keep Paul away from Sonny-maybe even try to kill him…but Paul and Sonny reunite and will get married…it will be a beautiful ceremony…and just as the start to leave in walks Will!(Chandler Massey)
Well, I HOPE that Derrick has a “dark side” to him and I hope he DOES turn out to be manipulative – at least, it would be SOMETHING – all they ever give him are monosyllabic responses and short scenes while we have ENDLESS scenes of Kayla in trouble for the 495th time with Steve rescuing her for the millionth time when they should both be investigating medicare and discussing retirement plans. I am also a little tired of John’s raspy voice and Marlena’s stoic and emotionless responses. They NEED to do something new and innovative on this show.
Sonny did seem jealous. Maybe now he should be upfront to Paul about his feelings before he looses him for good
I SO want Derrick to take a turn on the straight side and have a fling with Nicole! Talk about hot!!
Now before any gay people attack me…dont bother. I know many people who have experimented and happily settled on being straight. Talk about something that’s never been done on daytime before!! If anyone could turn Derrick…its our gal Nicole!!
First, Dylan, you’re absolutely correct about Nicole being very attractive and appealing — no doubt! And the idea of a groudbreaking storyline is quite interesting.
However, by your logic, maybe there could be a storyline about the attractive Derrick turning JJ Deveraux gay.
I will grant you that some people are bisexual; and so, maybe meeting a certain person could tap into a part of one’s sexuality not yet addressed. But the world is filled with people who deny their own sexuality and try to conform to societal standards by marrying (and having children with) someone of the opposite sex. (Anecdotally, I have personally known people in that situation.) I won’t cast aspersions on the “many people” you know who have “happily settled on being straight.” Yet research has repeatedly shown that sexuality is not a choice, not learned behavior. Although a genetic marker has not been identified, one’s sexuality is predetermined genetically and/or biochemically. Ask anyone, gay or straight, when he (or she) knew that he (or she) was gay or straight. Everyone seems to know as far back as they can remember.
In real life, it’s actually quite sad when someone denies his true self and “settles” on another path.
Hi, James,
I am a straight woman. Have never had any interest or curiosity or urge to experiment ‘going another way’. I have always been attracted to the opposite sex .
So, I am so glad that you specifically pointed out that homosexuality and/or heterosexuality is not a choice. It frustrates me to no end when people ( that I know and with whom I have had endless discussions about this subject) say that gays don’t have to be gay if they do not want to. ….that they should have the control and sense to go the ‘right way’….. that it is not normal….that God created man and woman for procreation.
How does one argue with ignorance?
My friend, who is gay, and have known all my life has always been ware of his homosexuality but, was ashamed. He told me at a very young age because he trusted me, to keep his secret. Even at that young age I understood his struggle, and never betrayed that trust. It was his story to tell.
He started dating girls at fifteen and lost his virginity to a girl. But, I knew he was not happy. No one knew but myself. However, I never tried to make up his mind for him. He was terrified to tell his parents.
He did not have any guy friends except for the school theater’s cast members. My heart went out to him.
He worked up the courage to tell his parents just before going off to College. His mother was ok with it ( I suspect she knew, deep down) , but it took his father about two years to come around.
He is to this day my ‘bestest’ friend…..he is happy….has a lucrative job ( major magazine) in the city and has been married to his husband for six years.
My point? I agree with you. Homosexuality is not a state of mind, no more than heterosexuality. It is not a psychological issue.
As far as I’m concerned, it is not an issue at all. It is what it is, James.
A loving heart, the integrity and fortitude of one’s mind is what defines a person, straight, gay or bi. The sooner we begin to accept each other, the better off this world will be.
Much love, my friend.
Awww, gee…thank you, James.
Wow, 36 years!!!!! I can only imagine how ‘inconceivable’ it probably was to ‘come out’, as it were, back then. It is no wonder gays suppressed their feelings.
There is so much I could say, James. What my friend went through…the pain!!! ….as I am sure, you did, as well.
Although, we as people, have become more tolerant, sadly, gays are still frowned upon….not to mention the snickering and cruel words.
But, it’s a new day, James. “All’s well that ends well”… with or without the scars.
Stay well…later, my friend.
It certainly IS sad and dishonest – I have a ‘friend’ who married a gal after years and years of playing around with guys – does that make him now “straight”?
NOPE – just wearing a mask.
It’s not being true to one’s self to marry or be “in a relationship” just for the outward appearance of it –
Derrick is gorgeous, and your idea does spark my interest, Dylan. But, I want Nicole with Eric. They have unfinished business to resolve. LOL.
Maybe, Derrick can bring Ciera out of her morbid , Morticia Addams look, and the constant -in-the- doldrums mental state.
I would love to see this girl get a life and smile. LOL.
Hello Celia! And thanks a million for your thoughtful, empathetic reply (to me)! It comes as no surprise that you understand the issue and that you have been a supportive friend to your gay friend since you were teens. I am certain that your support and friendship have been a godsend to this friend all along. I am glad to hear that he is happy and successful.
I wish more people were just as supportive and enlightened as you clearly are. Unfortunately, there exist people who are fearful and critical of what they don’t understand. There are indeed homophobes… And the notion of conversion therapy, which attempts to change a person’s sexuality (from gay to straight), is a frightening, damaging prospect.
As we know, teenage years are particularly challenging. Finding oneself is not an easy task. A gay teen who has no one to talk with about these issues or who is bullied (as I was, once upon a time, for 3 years of high school, no less) has a path that is further complicated. Some succumb to suicide. That factor alone is cause enough for greater acceptance. I am thrilled that, in recent years, we have seen a proliferation of anti-bullying campaigns in schools and elsewhere. I didn’t bring up my own bout with bullying for any sympathy; I just wanted to illustrate that bullying is (was) pervasive and can leave lingering effects. And, dear Celia, if I had had a supportive friend, such as you, all those years ago, things would have been much easier for me…
The good news is that, over time, acceptance has improved for the gay community. Part of it is simply knowing someone who is gay, perhaps a friend (as has happened in your life) or family member. Tolerance and acceptance are sweeping the country (our country, anyway, among others). Younger people find the notion easier to accept, and that is refreshing. There are increasingly more famous people coming out, which helps foster acceptance. Marriage equality is the law of the land, and this legislation was passed, in part, because opinion polls showed a growing societal acceptance for marriage equality.
At the risk of being too self-indulgent or self-disclosing, some brief additional comments on James’ back story: my experience mirrors that of your friend, in that my father was not accepting of my sexuality once the news hit… He didn’t speak to me for 2 years. My mother and sister were initially caught off guard but quickly came around. And over time, my father also came around to being supersupportive!
And there was a happy ending for me, as I luckily found my soulmate at a young age! We have been together more than 36 years, and we were officially married in 2015 once the laws changed! We have always gotten along great! We are family, and we are happy!
Coming full circle, my Friend, your understanding and acceptance are wonderful virtues. I salute you! Love to you as well…
Thanks so much, Celia. Take care, Friend! 🙂
beautiful posts celia and james… this hit home for alot of ppl
it would be nice for days to tap into these themes with the current gay storylines.. make it more human
Just an FYI…Trump’s vp is totally against gay rights…as well as women’s of their own bodies.
No one can “turn” someone straight, nor can someone “turn” someone gay. Now of course, on a Soap, I guess anything is possible – and as long as they give the character of Derrick something to do, that’s what’s important although I believe strongly in more storylines featuring gay characters. Why shouldn’t I? Have been watching shows featuring straight people for my entire life. That’s fine, I understand that most of the people on the show are heterosexual characters who jump from bed to bed and from relationship to relationship. Since the character of Will was “killed off” there haven’t been any storylines featuring gay people – for the past year or so, Paul has just been helping his dad John….and frankly that’s a little boring.
Ted, thanks for the backup on this issue as well as your own personal observations regarding your friend. Take care, Friend!
sonny was surprised? i was thrilled!… i havent watchd a full days epi in forever and this made me take a seat
derrick is the icing on the paul cake! hope these two get lots of airtime.and that a derrick/ paul / sonny triangle gets hot!…
yeah/ dang it/ f*
That’s right, Patrick. Sometimes we can be so superficial….that’s the nature of the beast. Being human, is being flawed.
Chandler’s excruciatingly good looks and easy-going, unhurried demeanor made him an idol. Gay or straight!! Who cares. He worked for me.
Very interesting what you bring up. Why don’t we hear about/ from the actors?! Tweaks the brain, that!
Perhaps, the gods that be did not like their ‘voice’.
ps: that… is one sexy post
whew
roar on that
Derrick / Paul / Sonny triangle gets hot
yeah / dang it / f***
Thank you, damien.
Yes they need to concentrate more on Sonny and Paul with Derrick somehow in the middle ( no, not physically) ~ but HONESTLY isn’t anyone else TIRED of the same old John and Marlena jazz and Patch and Kayla – I am also tired of Deimos arguing with Nicole over the same old tired storyline “so and so is the baby’s real biological father but doesn’t know it” bit. That storyline has been used since 1912, it’s so overdone and tiresome. This show has a chance to be INNOVATIVE and do something different and something reflective of today’s world.
Damien, great post! I agree with you that these developments make for an exciting DOOL. And thanks for your compliment regarding our discussion in this thread. Take care, Friend!
Wonderful news, Spencer is a terrific actor. Now bring back Vivian Alamain, Louise Sorel is missed. The lady can act. I miss my madam lol.
You bet, Claudio. To me, Vivian is the female counterpart of Faison (GH). I just get a kick out of them.
I don’t care how ‘bad’ Vivian can get, there is no one else like her. Love her!!
Celia…EXACTLY!!!!! I have been such a BIG FAN of Louise Sorel ever since she played Augusta Lockridge (another GREAT character…LOL!!!!!) on Santa Barbara back in the 1980’s!!!!! Celia…oh, how I WISH that Louise aka ‘Miss Vivian’ would come back to DOOL ALREADY!!!!! I knew that I could ALWAYS count on ‘Viv’ to make LOL!!!!! Y-e-p.
Later, my friend.
Celia…quick correction: At the end of my post, it should have read ‘to make me LOL’. Sorry about that.
Later.
Yes Celia, Vivian is a goddess lol. Days needs to call Louise Sorel and give her a juicy storyline. I want my madam back, also bring back Ivan.
I feel like the writing kind of changed direction the last two weeks – we had the somewhat anti-climatic wrap up of the trio of evil, we had Nicole somewhat out of the blue reveal Chloe’s secret to Deimos, we had Aiden suddenly become sane again and move away from Hope, and Sonny went from “no, Paul, we can’t be involved” to telling his mom he thought they were getting closer again and he was disappointed when Paul backed away from him.
And I really am hoping they are taking their time to sell Paul and Sonny, so when Will comes back (please, please), then it really will be a triangle with stakes.
I wish, Mike!! Oh, how I wish for Chandler to come back!!!!
Maybe this how there will bring back will somehow, What if will never diead It will be interesting to see, now Sonny knows how will felt when he was jealous of Paul
Ah-haha, Karen. I said, months and months ago, that Sami has EJ and Will safely tucked away somewhere in Switzerland.
They will all appear, together one day. Pipe dreams?! LOL.
it’s a funny world –
James Scott , clearly stated .. this was it for him
which makes me wonder… because most actors are gracious and willingly move on… the lag time between good story and production has to wane on some.
right ? why don’t we ever hear about this ? is this why Victoria Rowell is so vocal and is banned from daytime? is this why Brenda Dickson is not respected… ( she was Jill Foster Abbott )
it’s few and far between about the comings and goings of all the daytime actors.
as for Chandler Massey : wanted to leave to “go to college” AND not be branded playing homosexual. LOL. seems if you can easily portray as such… then you’re the go to man… PLUS his sensitivity , good looks, and calm delivery… yet gets riled… that’s from Sammi. alas… DAYS fans still miss him… and , he’s a gay character…. dang it
EJ and Will are dearly missed
A reply to Patrick:
Please don’t make stuff up about Chandler. His contract was unexpectedly terminated by Days after he told journalists he intended to return to college full-time once his contract ended. (That wasn’t even news, by the way – as he had said that publicly at his first Day of Days).
So glad this stud will be coming back to Days. I always loved seeing him, especially shirtless! I’d watch Days again if they had a Sonny/Paul/Derrick triangle!!
Truthfully, I’m confused by all of the excitement over this. Firstly, Spencer is very easy on the eyes, but he and Christopher Sean have zero chemistry, and he is a TERRIBLE actor. Secondly, by bringing him back, it implies that there are no other gay people in town for Paul to meet. I know Salem is somewhat small, but recycling this character that was a dud in the first place instead of introducing someone new and dynamic is a disappointing choice.
I thought Spencer did well with the small role he had before.
Small role is putting it mildly he’s a very proficient actor and they have him zippo to do on this show.
Nothing to say about this character but Have to say I was horribly offended by Days writers today with the dismissal of Deimos actions toward kidnapping torture of Bo. It was disgusting to see history so disrespected all done to prop a character that frankly is not taking off!
Deimos needs to be written off. In addition to this 100% disrespect of history & relationships the story of Deimos and his women is another affront. After Trump the last thing we needed was a man declaring women are there to provide him with an incubator and everything is just HIS HIS HIS HIS. If this is the new writers thoughts on Days future, Days will have no future at all. Very offensive
It was a nice surprise to see Derrick back. I actually saw his name in the credits a few episodes before, but at least it wasn’t leaked in the press months before, like some other characters. I wish Days would put Spencer Neville (Derrick) on contract. Hes just what the doctor ordered to spice things up between Sonny and Paul. Also, they could make him part of a new family, give him a sibling and parents or a mother that could become romantically involved with Roman. Salem needs a new family, as most everybody in the show are related by blood or marriage.
it would be cool… and the neatest… if Derrick is Nicoles younger brother… and wallah.. who’s coming to town…. Fay !
I’ve wanted this for so long
The only thing is unfortunately Fay was killed off last time she came back to Salem. I can’t remember the circumstances, but I think it involved EJ and the fake Rafe.
I just hope, and this is probably wishful thinking, that they give this fine young actor SOMETHING TO DO – let him be involved with Paul, only to be rejected by Paul (in favor of Sonny) and let the actor show what he can do, acting wise. Let him scream at Paul saying “what did you think I was? A thing? Something to just arouse the jealous side of Sonny? I’m a human being with feelings” = some depth! He’s a very good actor, but he’s always used as furniture on this show, it’s ridiculous! Give him a storyline and for cryin out loud WRAP UP this other crap with these Salem terrorists, it’s so overdone and played out. Keep up the gay storylines and add some DEPTH to this otherwise decrepit show. Don’t get me wrong, I love straight people and straight characters, but the gay characters on this show are like backround props, just supporting everyone else. I’m tired (to put it mildly) of Kayla and Patch, geez enough already – get married and leave Salem for all I care.
Achievement unlocked — time for me to start watching this show again.
I haven’t been able to stomach more than a few minutes of this show, once every few months just to check-in, for the past couple of years.
If they bring back Chandler, I will stay a regular viewer.
It is glaringly obvious that this show needs a Will/Sonny re-marriage ceremony — only this time done correctly, with the correct actor playing Will — the way it could have been done the first time.
My fear is that they will simply waste these actors’ talents on useless drivel, while overlooking the cornucopia of meaningful and profound storylines staring them right in the face.
