THE BRAD BELL INTERVIEW – DAYTIME EMMY NOMINEE

bradmain.jpgOn the stage of The Bold and the Beautiful at CBS in Los Angeles, Brad Bell and his producers, colleagues, crew members and some of his stellar cast including: Lesley-Anne Down, Brandon Beemer, Susan Flannery, Jennifer Gareis and Jack Wagner – gathered to celebrate the series nomination for the 36th annual Daytime Emmys.

We caught up with Brad, who not only discussed the nominations, but previewed what’s to come on the show now that Don Diamont, Rick Hearst and Jackie M., are going to take front and center stage.

Here are some thoughts from executive producer, head writer, and Emmy-nominated Brad Bell!

What shows did you submit for competition that got you into the final three of the Outstanding
Daytime Drama Series category?

BRAD:

We submitted the shows where Storm took his life to save his sister. So, heavy drama, mostly hospital scenes with great family drama, and tragedy and triumph, and everything that goes into drama! We did submit those two back-to-back episodes, and did submit the same shows for writing and directing. Those were my special shows in the whole run of this series, I think.

Did you feel, with the Storm suicide/heart transplant story, that this was your big shot to nab the prize? Did you feel good about your submission?

stormSuicide.jpgBRAD:

Absolutely! I thought this year was better than what we had in previous years. I thought the story with Betty White and Stephanie going home to confront her mother was strong, but this one was top tier. So, we will keep our fingers crossed

Were you shocked there were only three nominees in the category?

BRAD:

Totally shocked! Maria Arena Bell (head writer and co-executive producer, “Y&R”) sent me a nice email already. It is a shock because “Y&R”, in the ratings, is by far and above the top show. It’s a brilliant show and deserves to be nominated. So, it’s hard to understand. But, it’s great to be nominated and it’s great that a show from each network is represented in the finals, and it’s great for all the networks.

How do you feel about the Emmy broadcast being on the CW and not on a major network that carries daytime soap opera?

BRAD:

I think it would be great if it was on one of the networks that airs these shows, but we are in a time of change. I hope this will deliver good ratings for the CW, and we will find a new home, and it will be fresh and interesting.

Do you think the networks are looking to see how it does this year?

BRAD:

I think so. It’s a time where programmers are making up their minds and forming their opinions of where things need to be heading, and what’s best for the networks.

Now that Guiding Light was cancelled did you ever think of trying to make “B&B” go to an hour?

rickHearst.jpgBRAD:

I am very happy to have a half hour show, and it’s wonderful to be that.

Big news is that Rick Hearst who just left his role on General Hospital is coming back to “B&B” to reprise his role of Whip Jones. Will he have a romance? What can we expect?

BRAD:

Yes, Whip Jones is back. We will have some new romances on the show.
I think with Bill Spencer, played by Don Diamont, and Whip, played by Rick Hearst; we will also go back to the fashion house part of our storytelling. Jackie M. has emerged as the new Spectra. There was nothing like Sally Spectra, but now we have a ‘cougar’ running a fashion house in Jackie.

Is Jackie turning a bit more to the dark side?

BRAD:

Well, it’s going to continue to be sexy, and there are wonderful and unique relationships that come up. We are building around Jackie M., and now Spencer Publications is in the middle of the mix. So you have two fashion houses, Bill Spencer in the middle, and it’s wonderful and all new and exciting.

How did you nab Rick Hearst to return to “B&B”?

BRAD:

I had heard he was let go. There are only a few people in the history of our show that you can bring back. And, Rick is such a great actor, and there was a need for someone like him. So I jumped on it.

lesleyann.jpgWill Whip be entangled again with Brooke?

BRAD:

Brooke, The Jackie M group, and Stephanie….We are going back to Forrester being about heavy drama, and Jackie M being a contrast to that. There is a lot of drama, but also there will be lots of fun. We are bringing camp back, which was popular in the 80’s and the 90’s. It’s time to have fun again, and I think that’s the difference you will see in the show in the next six months to a year. We are going to have more comedy, silliness, and craziness… and it should be a fun to watch.

Lesley–Anne Down is really doing a great job. Jackie Marone is truly in charge here!

BRAD:

It works so well, because Jackie is going to lead this fashion house. She is like a Bond girl. We are writing her as the boss, and she is going to handle all these guys, and she is not about to fall in love overnight.

But many this week thought perhaps she was crossing the line in sexual harassment of Owen. What is your take on Jackie’s point of view?

BRAD:

It’s interesting. It’s about a woman in control. Owen is like this surfer dude who’s come up and into this fashion world, and obviously he is falling for this woman. He is intrigued by her. She is like no one he has ever met, and he is the one who is going to fall head over heels. While she will be like, “No, get a grip! Try to control yourself.” A lot of people would think Owen would be the one calling the shots, but she is the one in charge

bb_celebrates.jpgWhat about Madame X? Will Bridget ever have her own man?

BRAD:

Bridget’s going to have her own man, soon.

Would you ever consider bringing back Deacon, played by Sean Kanan, at this point in time to mix things up even more with Jackie and the gang?

BRAD:

Sean as Deacon is wonderful! Right now, we are on to Bill Spencer and the return of Whip, but don’t rule anything out. Sean is a great actor, a wild-card, and can cause trouble for the lives of the characters on our show.

My best Halloween costume was definitely Rubik’s Cube. I was about 11 years old and all of the older kids in the neighborhood were calling me, Rubie. I felt so cool. 8)

Y&R’s Camryn Grimes and Fiancé Brock Powell Talk On Their Roles as Mrs. Claus and Santa in ‘Mickey Saves Christmas’

Two-time Daytime Emmy winner, Camryn Grimes (Mariah, The Young and the Restless) has been involved in a very special passion project in more ways than one!  Now, everyone will be able can see it, and hear it, when Grimes voices the role of Mrs. Claus opposite her real-life fiancé and voiceover star, Brock Powell as Santa in Mickey Saves Christmas.

The new stop-motion holiday special premieres Sunday, November 27th (7:00-7:30 p.m. EST) on ABC, Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD, and Monday, November 28 on Disney+ and Hulu.  It features Disney icons: Mickey, Minnie and the gang, who are sent to the North Pole on a quest to save Christmas and find the true meaning of the holiday.

Camryn and Brock Powell became engaged earlier this year on January 7th, which also happened to be Camryn’s 32nd birthday. How the two met all comes back to the world of voiceover and Disney, as you will learn.

Michael Fairman TV chatted with the real-life lovebirds to preview Mickey Saves Christmas, how they wound up voicing the important voices of Christmas, Santa and Mrs. Claus, and just what Brock thinks of Camryn’s Genoa City alter-ego Mariah being married to Tessa (Cait Fairbanks), and more.  Is Brock #TeamTeriah? Check out what they shared with us below.

The two of you were actually introduced by Bill Farmer, the voice of Goofy! How did that happen?

BROCK:  So, Bill Farmer is my mentor, and through him, that was the first time I actually met Camryn.

CAMRYN: I knew Bill growing up, and in 2020 when I wanted to get into voiceovers, I reached out to him and that’s how this all started and I guess, the rest is history.

Now you are voicing Santa and Mrs. Claus in Mickey Save Christmas. How did it come about that you both landed parts on the project?

BROCK: I got to play the role of Santa in Mickey and Minnie Wish Upon a Christmas, which was the first time I got to voice Santa for Disney, and now I’m returning to the role this time. Camryn received the audition randomly for Ms. Claus on the day we were getting engaged, and it was perfect timing because I had to get her out of the house so I could set up the proposal here.  So, it really was a Christmas miracle because I was sweating!

CAMRYN:  We were cast separately. The production team had no idea that Brock and I were a couple. When I went in to record, they were like, “Here’s the voice of Santa for you to record to, and I was like, “Yeah, I know… that’s my fiancé!”  They were like, “What??” (Laughs)

Did the engagement go off without a hitch?

BROCK:  Yes, so after the audition process, Camryn returned home. I proposed, and there was a whole Disney/Pixar theme going on in the backyard. It was a really special day. To have her say, “Yes”, and also to have this crazy opportunity for her to audition for the role of Mrs. Claus happening at the same time … and then weeks later finding out she booked the role, it was all amazing.  We were now going to be working on this Christmas special together.  I think anytime you get to voice an iconic character, it’s special.  However, if you’d told me that I would get to return to the role I love, with the person I love playing opposite me … I think I’m done.  I just don’t know how you can ever top it!

Camryn, what did it mean to you to be in this film as Mrs. Claus, because fans saw this post of yours with a photo of you outside the Anaheim Convention Center where Disney’s D23 convention was happening.  It made everyone speculate  just what you were working on, which you shared was a lifelong dream.

CAMRYN:  Yes!  Y&R and CBS is my home, but I’ve always wanted to do something with Disney.  My family raised me on all things Disney and all things Christmas.  They were huge into the holiday, and so this kind of just checks every box.  It’s not only Disney, it’s Christmas, it’s stop-motion animation, and it’s Mrs. Claus.  I think my family was more excited for me to book this then anything I’ve ever done. I think there were tears! So sentimentally, this project really meant a lot to me.

Photo: BrockPowellIG

Camryn, did Brock coach you on doing voiceover work, or give you any tips?

CAMRYN:  I mean, I live with my voiceover coach. (Laughs) It’s amazing!

BROCK:  You know, I do coach for voiceovers and Camryn is my star pupil now.  She’s a talented actress, obviously. The biggest misconception is that, while it starts with the voice, Camryn, as well as most of the amazing voice actors I know, they have access to this childhood imagination which I think makes their performances possible. So, while you’re watching Mickey Saves Christmas, even though we recorded everything separately, what you’re looking for is that energy and every character connecting. You’re inventing the circumstances, you’re inventing your scene partner, where we have to close our eyes and embody a character we may, or may not, have a reference for. I think watching Camryn and hearing Camryn’s work on this, and a couple of other projects she’s worked on, I’m just so impressed at how coming from daytime television where there is a very stringent set routine and at the level that she excels at there, to then come into my world and then just kill it behind the microphone. She was able to let all of that go and have the bravery to try something new. I think a lot of people are going to love what Camryn has done here.  I’m most proud of her to be willing to look silly which is what is required in voiceover.

CAMRYN:  That’s true, and that’s probably the most fun thing about it.

Now, what can you tease us that happens in the story of Mickey Saves Christmas?

CAMRYN: It’s kind of built into the title a little bit, but I think what you’re going to get out of this is a deep sense of community and coming together to fix a problem and being able to lend a helping hand.  I feel, it’s just a really lovely film about chosen family.

BROCK:  It’s about family, it’s about friends, it’s about putting a lot of pressure on the holidays be perfect.  I think everyone involved in this special from the animators to the music team, everything in it helped make this a love letter to the holidays. The film really just talks about that Christmas is who you spend it with, and not necessarily how it turns out. I think it’s a really positive reminder that the most important part about Christmas is being with the ones we love. These are characters that Camryn and I love, not just the ones we voiced. To be with these actors, to be with these characters. it is just is going to be so special with everyone watching on November 27. It’s going to be the first tine for all us watching it together,

Photo: CBS

Now Brock, do you watch Camryn on The Young and the Restless?

BROCK: Yes, and I will say sometimes when Camryn is at work, our puppy does sit and watch mommy on TV, too!

Is Brock, #TeamTeriah on Y&R, as well?

CAMRYN: Yes, Brock is all about #TeamTeriah. It was actually really beautiful kind of getting engaged around the same time, Mariah and Tessa did on the show.

In another post of yours on social media, I saw that you had picked a spot for your wedding to Brock.

CAMRYN: Yes. We don’t actually have a set date (we have three options), but we did pick a location.  So, we will be figuring that all out very soon.

Check out a clip from ‘Mickey Saves Christmas’ featuring Camryn as Mrs. Clause and Brock as Santa below.  Then let us know, will you be watching the special? What did you think of Camryn getting to work on this project and opposite the love-of-her-life, Brock Powell? Share your thoughts in the comment section.

Patrick Duffy and Linda Purl Talk On Their Guest Star Turn on The Bold and the Beautiful, Bobby Ewing and ‘Dallas’, and Finding Love with Each Other

On today’s episode of The Bold and the Beautiful, arriving on to the scene during a crucial moment for Brooke (Katherine Kelley Lang) is none other than real-live lovebirds, Patrick Duffy and Linda Purl.

Duffy’s appearance marks the first time he had been back on the CBS daytime drama in the role of  Stephen Logan since 2011.  He had left his role on the soap to join the cast of TNT’s Dallas reboot to reprise his signature TV role of Bobby Ewing.

Photo: CBS

Now 11 years later, Patrick returns, but he brings with him, Linda Purl, heralded for so many memorable TV movies of the week earlier in her career.  In story, Stephen comes t0 Los Angeles with his new girlfriend, Lucy (Purl), only to stumble on drama with the Logan sisters, Brooke, Katie (Heather Tom) and Donna (Jennifer Gareis).  The two also appear on next Monday’s November 28th episode.

For Purl, this marks her second foray into the world of the soaps.  Just recently, she appeared on General Hospital as Peyton, who definitely provided angst and drama for Carly (Laura Wright) when Carly was stuck in Jacksonville.  Fans loved Purl’s performance on the ABC daytime drama series. Don’t be too surprised if Linda winds up with a Daytime Emmy nomination next year for her work.

Michael Fairman caught up with Patrick and Linda for a virtual interview now on You Tube’s Michael Fairman Channel.

In addition to their visit to B&B, Patrick opens up about his disappointment on the cancellation of TNT’s reboot of ‘Dallas’, plus being part of one of the most iconic moments in TV history, when in the closing moments of the original Dallas’ ninth season, Bobby was seen lathering up in the shower, when he had been killed-off on the show a year prior.  It was later revealed that the whole previous season was a dream!

In addition, Patrick and Linda discuss how their friendship turned into a romantic relationship and partnership some 20 years after they originally met, and how they even have gone into business together with ‘Duffy’s Dough’, (www.DuffysDough.com) just in time for the holidays.
