The Cast Of Downton Abbey Responds To Inaccurate Press Photo With Now Notorious Plastic Water Bottle! See How They Did It!

The “watercooler” moment of last week was a recent press photo for the upcoming fifth season of Downton Abbey!

In the photo, the Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) and his daughter, Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) are standing in front of a mantle, only on the right side of the picture is a plastic water bottle! Something that would have never been present in this period drama.

In fact, plastic bottles were not in wide use in the UK until the 1960s – 36 years after the new series of Downton takes place.  The image was later removed from Instagram and the ITV press site.  But one fan, according to the BBC News,  offered a potential get-out clause for the makers of the period show.  “Obviously the Crawley family invented the water bottle, and that’s how they were able to support the estate,” tweeted Diana Pearl.

But yesterday, the cast of Downton Abbey had some fun with the gaffe! In fact, they and the show’s PR team smartly gathered together to take this fantastic photo for the official Downton Abbey Instagram account where each of the actors does a hilarious look holding a plastic water bottle up, which goes with the photos tag line of hashtag “wH2oops.”

What do you think of the plastic water bottle mishap? And are you loving this photo as much as we are?  Looking forward to Downton Abbey season five when it premieres in the U.S. in January 2015? Let us know!

It was a honest mistake– and they found a very funny and gracious way of handling it.

Too funny! And what great sports laughing at their own expense. Also a kick to see the cast in their modern-day attire. Mrs. Patmore and Mrs. Hughes are especially fetching and SO unlike their dowdy Downton counterparts! Cannot wait for Season 5….have just been re-watching the 4th and it definitely whetted my appetite for more Crawley family antics.
