How to put a button, or a bow, on James Scott’s incredible eight year run as EJ DiMera on Days of our Lives is not an easy task.  But given the fact that over the course of his time on the NBC soap opera, we were able to chat on many occasions along the way, and bring to DAYS fans his thoughts on a myriad of storylines and events; including James’ well-deserved Daytime Emmy nominations, we couldn’t just let him say goodbye without us having one last conversation with the talented Brit.

So, let’s set the stage: As James’ fans know, he made the decision to depart Days of our Lives over a year ago, and stayed on till May of this year to play out the ending of EJ’s story.  DAYS tapes so far ahead that it wasn’t till the last two weeks of air shows that fans witnessed how EJ would exit the canvas … shot in cold blood by Clyde’s (James Reade) henchmen!  But with any major popular character on a daytime soap, you got to leave the door somewhat open in case there is the ultimate resurrection down the road. And in a shocking twist, and in a key scene, viewers now know that EJ may not have met his maker after all!

As James made his decision to step away from the grind of daytime, so too did his longtime co-star Alison Sweeney (Sami), who together formed one of the most talked about duos ever in soaps. Like em’ or hate em’, EJami was a force to be reckoned with, and so were their fans. With many controversial plot points along the way, EJami was often fodder for the soap opera “watercooler” moments of the day. Let’s face it, EJ wasn’t the most likeable guy, but somehow James Scott was able to make him the most popular!

So, how does James feel now that it has been several months since his final tape day? What happened when he shot his final scenes?  What did he think of the way EJ was written-off the canvas?  Would he ever consider returning to the role … or even doing another soap opera?  And, what did he think of some of the recently aired performances by those who circled EJ’s orbit?  James weighs-in on it all.  Finally, with one last look back, James reveals what some of his favorite EJ moments were over the years, as he now looks to the future and what lies ahead.  So, get ready to hopefully have a smile put on your face …  grab a hankie, or two … and read on!

MICHAEL:

At what point did you know they were going to murder EJ?  And how did you feel about the fact that they were murdering him … except then there was that little story beat where there was that injection by Kristen (Eileen Davidson) … which we will get to in a minute!

JAMES:

Initially, I was a little taken aback certainly, but that was just for a day or so, and then I realized they were wrapping up the storyline in an exiting, dramatic way, which of course, is what they need to do.  Ultimately, when I looked back on EJ’s relationship with Sami as a whole, it was very evident to me it was much more of a tragedy than a love story.  I think once I looked at it from that perspective, it made sense.

MICHAEL:

And they left the door open for a possible return in the future for the character, by implying that Kristen on Stefano’s (Joe Mascolo) orders, gave EJ some kind of drug that could revive him!

JAMES:

And they have left it open!  My body has yet to be discovered or something, I am not sure. (Laughs)  I certainly appreciate that.

MICHAEL:

The last scene that you actually filmed was with Billy Flynn (Chad), between EJ and Chad.  Was it emotional for you when it was time to wrap your eight year run?

JAMES:

To be honest with you, it was mixed emotions.  It was the end of the day, and we had to be done by 6PM, or we go over budget.  We put those scenes straight to tape with no rehearsal, and it was very stressful, and that was one of the reasons I needed a break from the show.  It was interesting to be doing that last scene on that day, which exemplified why I needed a break.  It was emotional, and it was difficult.  I am not an overtly sentimental person.  So, I was just looking forward to getting in my car and going home.  I had been killed-off that morning, and then did the scenes with Billy at the end of the day, and I think I shot three shows that day.  We had a lot of shows to get through by May 2nd, which was my last day.  So, it was tough for many reasons.

MICHAEL:

I thought you played the last minutes of EJ’s life so well, as he lies on the ground bleeding out as he draws his last breath.  And there was the big hankie moment, when EJ told Sami (Alison Sweeney) to look after the children!

JAMES:

I thought the writers did a lovely job in very few words getting out what needed to be said.  I think it was nice that they allowed EJ to understand that he was dying, and to be able to come from that place, and talk to Samantha that way and say those things about her and how it was all worth it, and how much he loved her and entrusting her to take on the responsibility of bringing up those children on her own.

MICHAEL:

Courtesy/NBC

Let’s talk about the scenes in the morgue where Sami is crying and devastated over seeing a dead EJ.  What was that like for you while Alison was pouring her heart out?

JAMES:

You know, when you are in a situation like that, my only real concern is to be making sure that I am not interfering with the one person who is acting, which is Alison, who was carrying the whole show and doing all the work.  There certainly came a point when it was very clear that she was very focused.  There is certainly a responsibility, I feel, to be respectful of the other actor, and to make sure you are giving them whatever they need.  For me, it was processing what was going on around me, which in a way, was me processing leaving the show, ultimately.

MICHAEL:

Prior to your final episodes, EJ’s mother Susan Banks comes to Salem with a warning, and you worked opposite Eileen Davidson as your on-screen mother. Was it hard to keep a straight face during those scenes, because of how funny Eileen can be as Susan?

JAMES:

Courtesy/NBC

Could I keep a straight face?  Her commitment to that character is the only thing that allows that character to exist on the screen.  It’s true!  It is very difficult to play somebody who is sort of out there, because as an actor, when you read something like that, and I am speaking from my experience, it can be very difficult to commit to it.  But if you can commit to it completely, then the audience will go along with you.  But if you don’t believe the circumstances that your character is in, and you have any doubt, than immediately it becomes very campy.  Eileen was wonderful to watch.

MICHAEL:

EJ was so mean to her; he was embarrassed by his own mother!

JAMES:

He was embarrassed!  It’s interesting because EJ and Susan really don’t have a relationship and it hasn’t been alluded to on the show before. Therefore, it was very difficult to play it with a lot of warmth and sincerity on EJ’s part, because this is a lady who has been absent for most of his life … for as much as he can remember.  She has not been there for him and then Susan comes in and tries to make these seemingly very odd suggestions to him. So, I don’t think he took it seriously, and that was the way that I decided to play it.

MICHAEL:

Then, your final scene with Eileen was with her as Kristen injecting a syringe of “something” into EJ’s veins in the morgue.  What was the dynamic going on between the two of you while you filmed that pivotal moment?

JAMES:

That was right after Alison shot her big scenes, so I was just staying very still and letting everyone else do their thing.  The best way I could contribute was to be still and do nothing, and give the actor the space to do what they needed to do.  I had not read the script, so I did not know Alison’s lines.

MICHAEL:

You had been on DAYS for eight years.  So, did it feel like eight … or, did it feel like twenty?

JAMES:

In some ways it seemed like eight years, and eight years is a long time, but it went by very quickly.  It did not feel like eight years.  It’s interesting.  I was looking back at a photo recently that someone had posted.  I think it was the photo shoot they did when I first came on the show.  It’s funny!  It doesn’t feel like that long ago, but when you look back at the pictures, you think to yourself, “My goodness! I look so young! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Did you feel that the story of EJami had worn itself out?  Did you think at the time of your decision to depart the show, there were only so many stories you can tell with the duo?

JAMES:

In some ways I felt like it was a storyline that was running out of options, but that wasn’t the reason for my decision to leave, but maybe it was a part of my consideration for leaving.  I can certainly say that one of the reasons I told Ken Corday (executive producer, DAYS), a year ago today that I was leaving, was so that the writers had the opportunity to wrap that storyline.

MICHAEL:

Courtesy/NBC

Speaking of story highlights: When you and Alison were pulling double duty playing the back in time love story of Santo DiMera and Colleen Brady, looking back at it, do you think it was a good story … or a ridiculous story?

JAMES:

I thought it was an original story and it was early on.  I thought it was interesting.  I liked it for those reasons.  It’s always fun to try something new, and to play a new character, and it’s fun to play another period. It’s something we hadn’t done before on the show, or since.  It was a unique challenge that Alison and I both enjoyed.

MICHAEL:

I thought Alison Sweeney did some of her finest work over the last few months of episodes, during Sami’s revenge plot on EJ for his affair with Abigail (Kate Mansi)!

JAMES:

She did!  I thought it was a wonderful twist that she married EJ, only to undo him!  When I read that I thought it was fantastic.  I liked it a lot.

MICHAEL:

When you look back at the journey you have taken on DAYS and with the character of EJ DiMera, would you ever have imagined the character would have become this popular?

JAMES:

Photo Credit: Sue Coflin Max Photos

Not at all!  I really didn’t think EJ was going to last very long on the show, especially after he shot John Black (Drake Hogestyn) and that whole incident with Sami in the car.  I thought his days were numbered, and that may have been the intention, I don’t know.

MICHAEL:

When you started on the show as race car driver EJ Wells, did you know from the very first day that EJ was going to turn out to be a DiMera?  Did you have any idea what that meant, or the context of, being part of that family in Salem?

JAMES:

I knew from my first day that I was going to be part of this DiMera family, which I knew nothing about.  When I got the job I asked, if I should do some research into the show, and the character.  The note I got from then producer Steve Wyman was: that this character was essentially coming in blind.  Therefore, I should not do any research, or spend time finding out about anything else that happened.  Then, on the first day when they told me I was a DiMera, I really didn’t understand the relevance of it, but it turned out to be quite an exciting thing!

MICHAEL:

How would you feel if DAYS recast the role of EJ DiMera, if you were never to return to play the part again? Daytime soaps these days have been known to recast many major roles.

JAMES:

I would want them to do whatever is best for the show.  And if they were going to recast me, the only thing that I ask is that they make it somebody good! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Would you hope that DAYS would ask you first if you wanted to reprise the role, before just moving on to another actor if they decided it was time to bring the character of EJ back?

JAMES:

Courtesy/ASweeneyFacebook

That is up to them.  I hope that they would, and if they were considering bringing the character back, I suppose it would be nice if they would at least call and gave me the opportunity to politely decline, or accept, depending on where I was and what I wanted to do.  I am absolutely not saying, “Never say, never.”  This is just not where I wish to be at the moment, but certainly overall it was a great privilege being on that show.  As much as I complained about finding it difficult with the workload and needing a break, and those things are true, that is not to say that I didn’t have wonderful time there.  I enjoyed it so much.  I loved working with people I got to work with, and even the people I didn’t get to work with very often.  DAYS has a great cast.

MICHAEL:

You mentioned in some articles that one of your favorite storylines during your time as EJ was the baby Sydney and Grace story, and working with Arianne Zucker (Nicole) and Alison.  Anything else stand out in your mind?

JAMES:

I liked when I first came on the show and EJ was sort of dark and nefarious.  Any time he was up to no good, I was having a good time.

MICHAEL:

Now that you are a“name” in daytime, if another daytime soap came calling, and asked you to join their show in a new role, would you consider it?  Or, are you saying to yourself, “I don’t want to work this hard again!”?

JAMES:

I certainly am not afraid of hard work.  Hard work is only hard if you are not passionate about what you are doing.  I felt over the last couple of years for me that I didn’t feel my work was as good as it had been. I can remember the time I would get my scripts and spent the entire weekend breaking them down and playing with them, and putting a lot of work into them, trying to bring the character to life, and to make interesting choices.  It was one of the things to me that told me that I needed to change things up a little bit, because to me, I felt the passion was lacking from some of my performances.  I don’t know whether that came across to the audience, but it certainly came across to me that something needed to change.  So to go back to your original question: it would have to be taken on a case by case basis.  I can tell you that none of the other soaps have reached out to me, but if they did, I would certainly listen to what they had to say, and we would go from there.  I can’t speculate on what they would say, therefore it’s hard to give an answer to exactly how I would respond.

MICHAEL:

You, my friend, have some of the most passionate, ardent, and loyal fans I have ever seen. They are amazing group of people, and they have been with you, and for you, every step of the way.   I have been in the soap biz for a lot of years, and I have to say, they are pretty impressive.  What would you like to say to your fans?

JAMES:

I have been incredibly lucky to have tremendous support from so many people consistently, and EJ has been a hard character to like sometimes. But they are an amazing group, and not only have they supported me directly, and made their support known to the show, and have had a very positive impact of my presence on the show, but outside of the show, they have raised thousands of dollars for a variety of good causes in my name.  I hear a lot from fans that through watching the show, and these storylines, they have formed relationships and friendships that will last a lifetime, and that is certainly gratifying to hear.

MICHAEL:

Courtesy/ASweeneyFacebook

Did you have a moment with Alison Sweeney, when the two of you finished up your final scenes, where you got to give each other a hug and kiss and tell each other it was a job “well done”, and share some heartfelt goodbyes?

JAMES:

Yes, there was.  We had that moment.  Alison was there waiting for me upstairs when I shot my last scene with Billy Flynn, and we had a conversation almost like that.  It was nice.  It was a very pleasant way to leave.

MICHAEL:

Will you stay in touch with Alison?

JAMES:

Alison and me, in all the time we have been on the show together, never really hung out in our personal lives.  Our relationship has always been on the show, and I don’t expect that it will change.

MICHAEL:

Did you take away any memento from the set, even though you are not a sentimental guy?

JAMES:

I think I kept the last script that I shot and it’s covered in blood! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Courtesy/GlamourMag

With all your talents, what’s next? You are in a very enviable position right now to just go out and enjoy life!

JAMES:

I am very lucky.  I am just about to go away to the Philippines to meet my sister there, and then I am heading over to Nepal. Then, the plan is to take the train from Nepal to India and then into Poona, where I will spend some time in an Ashram there. Finally, I will head to Sri Lanka, and then into Southeast Asia.  I will be back in Los Angeles sometime in early January to prepare for pilot season.

MICHAEL:

Speaking of pilot season, what kind of role would you like to do, if you got cast?

JAMES:

If I could pick any role, it would be something completely different than EJ and he would not be English.  I am working on my American accent and I have that almost down, which is very important for pilot season.

MICHAEL:

Is there a show on primetime television that you would love to be on?

JAMES:

Courtesy/IMDB Photo: Dana Patrick

I like Vikings, and I like Boardwalk Empire, although that is coming to end. Again, I like period pieces involving very unique characters that take place in interesting points of history and mankind … and that is very different than what I have been doing.

MICHAEL:

But the question is, do you still feel you have been bit by the acting bug?  Does it fulfill you … or… can you do other things and be just fine?

JAMES:

I can do other things and be fine.  Somebody once gave me a great compliment, and said, “Acting is what you have been doing for a living, but really what you are is a storyteller.”  I thought about it quite a bit, and thought about different careers in my life.  One of the things I enjoy is telling stories and that could be from an acting perspective, or that could be from a photography perspective.  I have also been writing some projects as well.  I am not quite sure where things will go next.  I certainly very much enjoy acting, but I am open to anything really.  I think it’s important when you have those moments in life when you are not attached to something, and you are not quite sure what the next phase of your journey is going to look like, that you don’t pigeon-hole yourself.

MICHAEL:

Courtesy/NBC

How was working with Billy Flynn (Chad) as your younger on-screen brother?  Billy told me he wished he had the opportunity to work with you more, but you were on your way out, as he was on his way in.

JAMES:

I like Billy Flynn a lot.  He reminds me of EJ when he first came to the show.  I think he is a very strong actor.  I worked with him just a little bit.  I was impressed by him, and I felt he made very interesting choices. You know, I have seen a lot of actors come and go from DAYS, and I think Billy is one of the most interestingly dynamic actors that I have seen in a long time on the show.  Billy is a very active actor, and he is always doing things as an actor in the scenes. He is on his game, and I think he is a great asset to the show.

MICHAEL:

You also had amazing on-screen chemistry with Eileen Davidson when she plays EJ’s half-sis Kristen.  Did you think the two of you had that chemistry? Eileen says you did!

JAMES:

I certainly thought we had on-screen chemistry … and there was certainly a point, and I did not know if I did it overtly or not, but we had a couple of scenes where I teased a bit of the sexual chemistry.  I thought it was fun to do, why not?  (Laughs)  Eileen is wonderful and fantastic. I hope they keep bringing her back to DAYS.  I think she is a great asset for the show to have.

MICHAEL:

Did you also have the opportunity to say goodbye to Kate Mansi (Abigail) before you left? What did you think of her performances?

JAMES:

I did say goodbye to Kate.  She is another young actress who from the time she has been on the show, I feel has grown tremendously.  I felt that the predicament that she was placed in, where we had the storyline of the affair, was very difficult and very challenging.  I thought she grew as an actor and as artist over that period.  I saw her do what I think was her best work that she has done on the show.

MICHAEL:

And then we had EJ’s children, especially little Johnny played by twins, Aaron and Griffin Kunitz, who so loved you!  Was that tough to say goodbye to them?

JAMES:

Courtesy/NBC

That was tough, too.  I will miss working with them a lot, and it was certainly difficult to say goodbye. They were on the show along time.  They made me some drawings and some goodbye cards that I also kept.

MICHAEL:

Next year, DAYS will be celebrating their 50th anniversary! Could you foresee EJ popping up for a shocking visit during it?

JAMES:

I have a funny feeling it would be more trouble than it is worth! But, I will be there in a flashback! (Laughs)

Love your interviews!! You always ask the best questions.
Thank you, Michael! 🙂

Oh no! That questions about whether he would do another soap was just was RC an FV needed to get him to GH! DON’T DO IT JAMES!!!

Frank, get off that phone with his agent and just let James be. And James, stay off that studio lot!

GH wants him for the Valentin Cassidine role since they couldnt get the actor who played AMCs David Hayward…kidding…lol

I would like him to be a recast for AJ Quartermaine. He kind of looks like Sean Kanan, and AJ fans want the character back.

Nope i want him to become a star, not a daytime star, a prime time or movie star. I don’t want him wasted on bad writing again and again. Stop it.

As usual,Michael, you are a class act as is James. Wishing you both the very best.

awesome interview – thank you michael!

Wonderful interview! I met James Scott and fell in love. I’m 61. Watched days for 40 years. My favorite couple story is ejami and James. I would like to sed young and the restless snatch him up!!!!! I will miss him terribly

I hope to see him soon on prime time.
As for his exit story..well i did not mind a tragic ending like a death for Ej..but by a day player, really ? And wasting his last year on a trashy affair with a not worthy character ?
I was so disappointed and this waste doesn’t endear me to continue watching this soap to be honest. They kind of insulted Ej, Sami and their history with this last bad move, imho.
As for runing out of options for them, i just disagree..there was one story they never did with Ej and Sami : it was them being a scheming team who can get involved in lot’s of drama, schemes but never doing some awful things to each others or their children..what a concept it is..and it was never really played out onscreen..a real Bonnie and Clyde vibe story..and i will always be sad about this wasted opportuny instead of the usual betrayal, interlopers against each others..sigh.
As for the open ending for Ej..let’s not go there..they decided to kill Ej..well own it and don’t write some silly, ridiculous coming from the dead story for the character..it is outdated and just too silly. You made a choice with this direction, deal with it.

Not Happy E J is gone very sad. I loved the British way of him saying Samatha
Hot

Wonderful interview thanks, love James Scott and will miss him tremendously

I wish James all the best. I hope he enjoys his time in the Ashram. Since I’m currently reading “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert, I actually know what that is.

I hope that we will get the chance to see him in a new project once he returns to LA. Having followed him in his career since AMC, I look forward to whatever he does next.

God Speed James.

Vicki

Michael Fairman … another class act for an interview. We appreciate and love all you do for the entertainment business.

Loved both alison and james they made the show interesting,.both were excellent actors.they will both be missed.

James Scott is an amazingly talented actor. The Ejami story took me by surprise when I had been watching the show over 33 years. My late mother greatly enjoyed seeing and talking about this new character who literally came out of the ether. May 2006 was a fairly benign period for the show. They were reworking an already well worn quad of Sami, Carrie , Austin and Lucas.

Introducing EJ shook everything up. I had been watching DAYS since I was 8. My interest and commitment to watching skyrocketed to a level I hadn’t experienced since BOPE storyline in high school. This time I got to share the story with my Mom who was older and at another point in her life. It gave us a fun, easy source of laughs and discussion that helped carry us through her last days on earth. I still remember in her last days of life in hospital when she said in the middle of a very sad and serious talk about medical decisions – ” let’s watch EJ…Days is on tv.”

The show and the story of EJ and Sami were both comfort and entertaining diversion rooted I’m family through difficult times of transition, especially having been an only child whose family had passed away in last years. I felt like I had a portion of my family with me.

I was thrilled to actually meet James in LA in 2010 at a fan event. The only fan event I ever traveled to — not just a convenient book signing or something. I made it a real trip across the country. It was fun and loved meeting James for just a few minutes. A happy time.

None of us know much about the private person who is James. However, through his gifted portrayal of a soap character gave us rich moments of fun and entertainment….and in last weeks – tears of seperation and goodbyes.

Godspeed, dear James Scott.

Wish the questions had touched on EJ and Nicole too. I always found Ejole far more compelling than horrid ejami. Best of luck James. I never say goodbye because with this show anyone can come back at any time. Til we meet again….

Please, Ej and Nicole ake Ejole was always second best and the rebound of the real story which was Ejami..even the characters and actors said it.
Ej’s real love is/was Sami the same way Nicole’s real love is Eric Brady.
Moreover i don’t what was ‘more compelling’ about Ej and Nicole, with Nicole Ej was a dull one-note villain and Nicole was desperate and pathetic..what a combination, and the icing in the cake : the characters have as much bad history as Ej and Sami..well actually it is worse with Ej tried to kill Nicole several times and all the Nicole’s pathetic blackmails and framed for different crimes.

Wonderful interview thanks, love James Scott. miss him all ready!
My hope is that one day in time Days will make him a GREAT offer.and he
will take it.because No one can take his place!!……..He is the very best of the Best!!

nope..he deserves better like..prime time !
Corday and his team of losers..oups i meant ‘writers’ insulted him enough with offensive writing, this last year being maybe the worse (although the fake Rafe and Nicole/Taylor triangle were also uber disasters, few years before..ick)

As always, I love your interviews Michael. Thank you so much for this last one with James.

I have a lot of anger toward the show for the treatment of James. He was a workhorse for DOOL, as his stats show. He was handed hard, complex storylines where EJ was evil and nasty. Through the talent and charisma of James, people loved EJ. His love for Sami made him relatable. The horrid story of the beginning of 2014 that lingered like a bad smell never seemed right for EJ and his death was the worst ever for a lead player. It reeks of petty revenge. We all know it happens…

Still, I am happy James is free to pursue whatever he wishes now. I would bet I’m not the only one who hopes some show picks up James. Primetime could use a new, hot guy who can act.

Goodbye EJ. Despite everything, you were loved. Much success James.

Amen to all you said!!

Amen

Thanks for always delivering great interviews with James. I hope you’ll have a reason to interview him when he comes back to our screen. I miss him something awful already! Best of luck to James in his travels and his future, RIP EJ

I will miss Ejami and the Ej’s character but to me this last year this character became quite destroyed..these writers did everything to make him despicable and sleazy with his last disgusting story, it was not a good year for him, that’s for sure..too bad, 2013 was great.
Also i will miss James Scott on my screen and wish to see him in better material..prime time period pieces tv shows would be perfect.
Hey i could see him on Downton Abbey playing against Georges Clooney, this time ! ha.

that would be too much yummy in one show! 🙂

He is a huge talent…i bet he could play an interesting character on the revive Twin Peaks, Once Upon A Time or on one of those CSI shows…he might return to soaps even Days but i think that wont happen soon…i could be wrong…i see him as a GH Cassidine…but i think he would do very well in primetime…if the Avengers came back he’d make a great John Steed!!!

Good ideas..i loved Twin Peaks (and David Lynch is just a filmaking genius, a real artist imo) and i love James Scott’s onscreen charisma..this combination would be just delicious..do it David, do it James ! lol.

I only started watching Days this year , so I am heartbroken that EJ and Sami are leaving. I am happy that he has Sri Lanka on his list of countries to visit, because I am from SL! I am sure he will love that beautiful country which was called “The land without sorrow” by the first invaders.

EJ and Sami were only reason why i watched Days without them its going to so boring i hope James comes back with Alison one day they can make it happen we all know EJ is not really dead the ending for Ejami is complete rubbish they should got a HEA these writers truly suck having sami go and make a movie just after the love of her life died. I just don’t get that at all oh well its been filmed long time ago nothing we can do about it.

Just bring them back Days and all is forgiven.

If they can give Billy Flynn (Chad) a real love interest and someone who can match his range, then he will do nicely picking up where James Scott left off.

Billy Flynn reminds me of a young Nicolas Cage, but with better acting. I know the show is suffering the loss of two great actors right now, but I think they really have something with Billy Flynn.

I will ALWAYS miss “EJ”, but I hope that James Scott, does do more TV or Movies. I would hate to not see him, he is very sexy, and that accent……..damn, the WHOLE package!!

Big elephant in the room not mentioned? Not by MF nor by JS. Why am I not surprised? So glad I stopped watching in January!

What’s the “big elephant” that wasn’t mentioned?

I wish you would tell us about the elephant. Is it pink with purple spots?☺

Michael, great interview! I stared watching Days about 4 years ago. It is the only soap I’ve ever watched. I was home with a broken ankle and saw EJ on Days. I started watching only because of him. I was also intrigued with EJ and Sami and found them to be the most capturing duo with extraordinary chemistry.

I think it is very sad that EJ had to die on Days and no happy ending for EJAMI. EJAMI was a very popular duo on Days, but never given the opportunity to be happy together long term. This past year was the worst! This Abbey mess was beyond ridiculous and so unnecessary. The wedding was horrible after devoted fans waited for years for this event. Days couldn’t even give them a happy ending, instead we get a morbid ending.

With that being said, obviously I will not continue watching a show that has no consideration for their fans who happen to be a HUGE EJAMI fan base.

James is an excellent actor and will be missed on Days. I teach tennis to college students who also adore him. None of them are interested to continue watching either, especially with the no happy ending for EJAMI.

I thank James and Alison for portraying with their heat and soul EJAMI. Both are too talented to be wasted on this show consisting of pathetic writers who have no idea of writing a good love story even when they had the BEST (James and Alison) to work with.

Best wishes to James with his future adventures. Hope to see you on television again in the future.

Honestly, the writers should be fired! If they think that fans will stand for that send off for both of our star actors “with the potential of a return,” they better give themselves some of that John Black IV medication!

i stopped watching awhile ago, not long after my gramma passed away. she got me hooked on days but after watching the negatives after negatives after even more negatives happen between the characters…..i stopped watching.EJAMI was an amazing couple that should have had happiness! in my honest opinion at least ONE couple should have had complete happiness throughout all trials and tribulations! none of this nonsense about this girl interfering with this relationship and causing havoc…..bringing the dead back to life (Stefano has more lives than a cat it seems!?) and other such rediculousness! i know soaps are not real life and are supposed to bring anticipation and the like but they, the writers for DOOL, have left out one important thing…people out there like to see more happiness than sadness. we want to see more positive than the negative! in my opinion of course. why watch something that is not moving forward in any aspect? you only see negative rather than the positive. many characters brought that ‘positive’ only to be killed off so to speak by the negative. why!? regardless, i do not watch anymore but am very sad to see Allison and James leave. i say that it was not their fault but the writers and i do not blame them for leaving. i agree, the writers should be fired!

I do not think anyone should expect to see him back on DOOL soon, if ever. I read another interview he did recently and he really sounded like he would be fine if he never acted again in his life.

I see him trying pilot season and possibly getting hired for some independent work, but if that does not pan out, I see him leaving acting and doing something philanthropic. I do not see him as previous actors who used soaps as a stepping stone to primetime and movies and, when that did not work, went back to daytime. I just do not see that with him.

Those that enjoyed him should be grateful they got to watch him for eight years.

Thank you, Mr. Fairman, for another well-thought-out interview.

I’m still too sad and angry over EJ, Sami, and Ejami’s ending to write much of anything else that will be coherent. Between the OOC affair, and now EJ killed by a thug, and Sami going to Hollywood…I’m just shaking my head.

I won’t be watching Days come November – some great actors, but mostly poor story-telling…and I feel that Corday intentionally insulted fans.

Good luck and happy travels to the talented, thoughtful James Scott!

You are not alone!

Michael firstly thank you for the interview.

James Scott what can I say, amazing actor he was the best thing that happened to Soaps as far as I am concerned for over 20 years. Even though the audience were not meant to cheer for EJ, James portrayal wanted me to get the girl and that girl was Samantha.

James was wrong it was a Love Story mabe not a soap one. KC just didn’t allow it, we had a glimpse in 2013 and without fail they inserted a ho, while EJ took all the blame and Miss I can’t do no wrong had a free pass to screw over someonés fiancé. Fail!!

I am THRILLED JAMES has left and wish him all the best because I have no doubt in my mind no matter given the opportunity he will turn into Gold.

Great post and i totally agree..what a waste..Ejami story was never really told, this show tried everything to taint it..sigh.
I am happy James is moving on and i hope he will find success with better writing in prime time shows.

I really enjoyed James’ portrayal as EJ and appreciate all the work he put into his portrayal of a character I loved to hate. I wish him all the best in his travels and know he will be very successful no matter where the path may lead.

Thanks for another great interview of a very beloved star. His fans will miss him.

Well the tragedy was not the Ej and Sami’s relationship but what they did to the Ej’s character for his last year..like Ej would even give a look at someone as dull and irrelevant as this Abby..uber nonsense.
I enjoy James Scott acting and onscreen charisma and what he was able to do with Ej despite the awful writing but this last year was a total nighmare concerning his character as far as i am concerned and the worse; it could have been awesome since he was finally with the woman he always wanted.. What a bummer.
I am glad he is away from this Days trainwreck and hope/want to see him on prime time or movies, he has everything to succeed.

E.J. and Sami couldve had more storyline: The kidnapping of Johnny…Johnny is kidnapped and the kidnapper doesnt want cash…he or she wants Dimera Enterprises for his safe return…is the kidnapper Clyde who wants the company…or Kate…maybe both…Meanwhile, is the Dimera mansion haunted…blood oozes out of E.J. and Samis portrait…lights often flicker off…mysterious footsteps in the night…Sami haunted by ghostly images of Alan who raped her when they were young…E.J.s mother Susan Banks holds a seance to contact evil spirits and the childrens new nanny, Marion Chambers, becomes posessed by the spirit of Elvira Dimera, a long dead Dimera ancestor, and the nanny in a trancelike state nearly strangles Sami…turns out Marion is working for Chad…Chad wants the company and house in revenge for E.J. sleeping with Abigail…id like it!!!

James Scott would like to do a period piece…if one of our networks or cable station would do a mystey period drama like Canada’s ‘Murdock Mysterios’ serious he’d be perfect in the lead!!!

Not bad except the Abby bs would not have happened to begin with..we just had to find another motive for Chad and actually it would not have been hard to find..with Chad gone for a while and under Stefano’s influence. Abby the slut would never even exist, at least in their storyline.

I wish James well and great success in other mediums than daytime, he is too good for it. Ejami could have been their goldmine but these Dool TPTB wasted them as much as they could..bad move.

I am so sad that EJ the children and Sami are all leaveing or has already left ! I pray everyday that they change their minds and come back to DOOL !! I am praying that they all still stay on facebook & still remain as a friend !! <3 &miss y'all already !

Thank you so much Michael for the interview with the GREAT SCOTT!!!! LOVE JAMES SCOTT & ALISON SWEENEY!!!! Supercouple EJAMI were absolutely amazing and I definitely understand James & Alison’s complete and utter disappointment with the show and its writing for them, just as viewers are disappointed in the show for what it did to them. If it had been any other two characters the show would not have treated them with tragedy, the show would have let those characters leave Salem happily and together. And after absolutely everything that Supercouple EJAMI went through over all these years including that ridiculous and piece of trash show that the show gave them in their last year on the show, after everything they went through and overcame, these two more than any other two characters or supercouple in soaps deserved their happy ending and leaving Salem together. Not this crap that they got.

But I’m so glad and thrilled that at least James & Alison were just as fed up and disappointed with this show and its depressing stories as viewers were, and that they left the show together! So glad James & Alison left DAYS, they are too great to be on that show or in soaps, and DAYS doesn’t deserve them. I can not wait to support James & Alison on their future projects and things they do and hopefully this will not be the last time that we see these great two with their absolute off the charts amazing chemistry together, work together again! They should totally get a spin-off or prime time show of their very own together! They certainly are exciting, entertaining, and great enough!

And that’s so cute…it sounds like James would love to hangout with Alison outside of the show, but they didn’t. But if she wanted to, sounds like he would be ready to hang with her in a heartbeat! Love that they got to celebrate together and shared their final moments on that set and show together and that Alison was waiting for him to be done with his scenes so that she & he could say goodbye to each other together. Awww, and James saying it was nice and a nice way to leave. These two are just too great together as a great super-star acting team! James & Alison will be tremendously missed, but so glad that they did leave Days, as I can leave the show as well with them and tune out/turn it off/change the channel, and focus on the two of James & Alison and supporting their futures and future projects!

THANK YOU SO MUCH JAMES & ALISON FOR ALL THE GREATNESS, ROMANCE, & BEAUTY TOGETHER AND JUST BLAZING SUPER CHEMISTRY TOGETHER FOR YEARS AND SINCE DAY ONE!!! And of course for THANK YOU JAMES & ALISON FOR THE HUGE PHENOMENON THAT IS SUPER COUPLE EJAMI!!!!!!!!! There will NEVER be another of these two as actors, as characters, or as a Supercouple and they’ll NEVER be another to do it as greatly, grand, and excitingly as these two! Now, onward and upward and can’t wait to support James & Alison all the way in the future things they’ll do.

Really hope James is safe in his upcoming travels and has a great and peaceful time. And thank you Michael for the years and moments of great and fun interviews that you did with James & Alison and for Supercouple EJAMI!!!!!!

Wonderful post!

So true. 🙂

The truth is they could hate each others guts!

I have not seen anything that indicates they quit because they were unhappy with the storyline.

AS was a DAYS fan when she was hired and she said she’ll continue to be a DAYS fan. I think they were burned out…I only wish they had burned out about three years ago!!!

I’m sure AS will make appearances at DAYS while James has no plans to…that would be the reason for the story to end the way it is. They will not recast Sami because of AS’s love for DAYS and EJ can easily be recast.

The truth is you don’t know anything !

They were maybe burned out but this last insulting storyline did not help, even James said he did not want to play this story and was disappointed when he learned it was what Cordumb and co had in their pockets to once again tarnish his character and his most popular pairing.

As for ‘three years ago’..eyeroll..be happy they are gone, enjoy your much more interesting and ‘exiting’ soap..i am sure it will so sooooo ‘amazing’..enjoy.
lol

And it is not because YOU think that Ej can be easily recast that is true..4ever DAYS..not sure, more like EGOMANIAC4ever.

You must be one of the fans that James Scott was referring to when he said “Soap fans are f*****g idiots!”

It’s OK to attack me. I just hope you don’t attack Kate Mansi. She did her job…She can’t help that she is a beautiful, vibrant, young woman who had loads of chemistry with James…Just because EJabby sizzled should not be a reason to hate KM.

I am so crushed by your insults EGOMANIAC4ever oups i mean 4ever DAYS.lol.
As for Kate Mansi i don’t give a damn enough therefore i will not bother about her..James last storyline was just a major prop to her character, who was never popular to begin with..he was wasted on it and he was disappointed by this storyline..his words..Ejabby was more ‘fizzled’ than ‘sizzled’ but i am not surprised by your ‘praise’.

Enjoyed the interview. Thanks, Michael. Please keep us posted on James’ career.

Really good read. I’ll miss EJ, I’m not sure I will continue to watch DOOL.

how can you say he will be back if he is dead?

I think James Scott is a MUCH better actor than some who’ve made it big in movies
or prime time TV……so, I wish him MUCH success in the future! I’m a “Days”
fan who watches infrequently……if I’m flipping the channel and see an
actor or character on “Days” that I like, I’ll stop and watch. I ALWAYS stopped
and watched when EJ was on! (Same with Stefano, or Count Tony when
he was on, etc.). I’m sad to see James Scott leave, but I hope he makes it BIG!

I will miss James on the show. I’m not an Ej fan, but I’m certainly a James Scott fan. I wish him well with future projects, and will be watching.

As for Ejami’s send-off, I didn’t like the part where Kristen injected him. There is no drug that can return humans to life once there is no brain activity for that long, so they should not have left the fans thinking Ej is alive somewhere waiting to recover. I would have enjoyed seeing him killed off, and Sami sent to prison for fraud…But Hollywood? C’mon.

Come on the fraud plot point was totally ridiculous and did come out of nowhere and last two freaking seconds..by the way ‘fraud’ like that never give prison sentences (or it is really light sentences) to culprit..even in real life..lol..so to sent someone in prison for that on a soap it would have been even more silly.

I always liked James as an actor. I thought he brought a lot of dimension to EJ Dimera. He was bold, dangerous, and fierece; yet, he brought a tad bid of vulnerability to the role, too. I have never been a big fan of Sami Brady. No offense to the actress or her fan base; but, we all have our favorites. Too many tantrums. A bit too spoiled-entitled. Could never really see why EJ was infatuated with Sami. I liked EJ with Nicole-more on his playing field, I thought-both dynamic, fierce, and vulnerable at times. I hope that when Sami leaves for Hollywood, she takes nuWill with her for the long haul. I find nuWill nauseating. Ugh.

Sami was/is as much dynamic, fierce and vulnerable as Nicole, if not more.
Ej and what made him unique was his special connection to Sami, he was so different yet so similar to her. Nicole was never a real powerful player in all their dynamic..she was not even there the two first years Ej was on this show, Ej’s complex dynamic with Sami is what made him so popular and so fascinating, Nicole was irrelevant for the most part in the psyche and story of Ej the character.

I’m British and even I found his British accent sexy amongst the American accents :-D. I can only watch DAYS on Youtube due to being in England and all I can say is I’m so proud that James Scott is British. He is hot, sexy and not to mention extremely talented. I will be sad not to see him or Sami on DAYS anymore. They were a soap supercouple who can never be replaced. What a talented pair of actors they are. I think I talk for all Brits when I say that he would totally be welcome on one of our British soaps (Eastenders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks). Your loss would absolutely be our gain :-). Can’t wait to see what he ends up in next. All I know is that I will be watching whatever it is :-D.

THEY ARE SO WONDERFUL AND DESERVE THE BEST.

Great interview Michael. James seems like a very nice guy, he sure is handsome and dashing to go along with that.

I like that he said he is not saying no to returning, that he would like to be asked first. I think the show needs a break from Sami and EJ, just like the actors need a break.

The actors sure need a break from the bad writing of this soap..and me, a watcher need a break from this show and will watch Ali Sweeney and James Scott, in new projects. They are too talented for this soap opera.

To James Scott. I have been watching days since I was in diapers! ( I am now 53!) My first memories of watching was in our game-room, with my Mum ironing our clothes. I can’t recall if it was only 15 mins or 30, but I watched it with my Mumma and still watch it today. Ej was hands down my favorite along with Nicole, Stefano, and back in the day,Tony, Lee and Renee and when Chris Kosacheck (sp!?) was Chris Kosacheck!! lol!! As much as I love EJ in DAYS, you would be better suited for your own show on prime time. Yes, just my opinion, but you are something special there Mister and I salute you. Have fun traveling, you lucky dog you. That is just what I would be doing if I were able. God bless you ( and I do hope to see you return at SOME POINT on days, even if it is just for a season. 😉

BTW… the prime time part (LEAD of coarse!)…. oh, so many ways to go…. but the EJ character would really be something to go with. A bad boy- good-boy lawyer, or a detective sort. Just sayin 😉

Ej was so much better than a Stefano ! Ej was a grey character, full of layers..well when the writing allowed James Scott to play the layers, at least..Whereas Stefano while he can be fun, is always a one-note cartoon villain (borderline James Bond or superhero OTT villain caricature)..who is good in small doses but can’t sustain for a long periods without becoming ridiculous and over the top/campy. Sami Brady like Ej Dimera is an example of complex, layered soap character..She is/was Ej’s equal and total match female partner despite the awful writing they did endure, most of the time.

James, just wanted to say I am a 61 yr. young woman. I have been watching Days almost since I could understand tv, but I have never been more appreciative of an actor such as your self and Allison.

Your story lines and acting were way beyond any one persons dreams could have imagined. I really felt like you were a married couple, and it was more realistic then any soap I have ever watched. The Passion and realness of the show between you too made me feel like you were in my family, and I cared about you both just as though you were. We have lost two out standing actors, and actresses. May God Bless you both, and I truly wish to see you both back together again somewhere in the future. Great Acting on both your parts, and God Speed to you both. Judy Kreppein, Enterprise Alabama.

I wish James would try a war movie. We need
a good one. Love Ejami.

Thanks Michael for interview ! James is so honest in his replies ! Hope he gets rested up and travelling over before the pilot season. He knows what his heart desires when it comes to his work so I hope folks leave him alone. He has made a name for himself by being himself. Glad to know he keeps up with family life. (sister, brothers etc.). Take care James !! Kept in prayers for your health and safety !!

James and his girlfriend sat at a table next to me and a friend at the Santa Barbara Mission Arts Festival this past Memorial Day. I was visiting from North Carolina. I did not know his name, but catch the show about twice a year and have always admired his performances. Did not have the guts to tell him he would make a Fantastic Bond !!!. Best of luck to him in the future.

MICHAEL WHERE IS jAMES?

James moves to Colorado. He’s writing. He’s divorced.

I THINK THAT JAMES SCOTT WOULD BE FANTASTIC FOR THE NEXT JAMES BOND

James Scott would make a great James Bond!! He is excellent in a suit and could hear him say, Bond James Bond. He should be in movies. As E.J. he made us laugh, cry, hate him and love him. Most talented actor. Hope to see him on the big screen!

I miss James and Alison on my screen. EJami, sigh, were Rhett&Scarlett, Mr and Mrs Smith, Romeo and Juliet rolled into one, this amazing duos chemistry and acting was wasted on DAYS.

Days of our Lives Star, Greg Vaughan, Gives Health Update and Thanks Everyone for Their Support

Greg Vaughan (Eric, Days of our Lives, ex-Lucky, GH, and ex-Diego, Y&R) provided an update on his health on Sunday, March 17th. Vaughan had previously shared that he had become ill during a trip with his sons to Colorado, and had developed altitude sickness when he was having trouble breathing accompanied by terrible headaches and landed in the urgent care.

Now on St. Patrick’s Day, Greg took to his Instagram and shared how he is feeling now, and to thank everyone for their love and support.  As it turned out, Vaughan was diagnosed with high altitude pulmonary edema, commonly known as HAPE. However, he is on the mend slowly and surely.

In his new video post, the DAYS favorite started by expressing, “I just felt such an appreciation and gratitude for everything. . reaching out. Your prayers have been felt. It’s been a struggle, but I’m over the top. And, taking this moment just to say I didn’t realize the things that I was going through. My (original) post was simply just to educate, put some information out there and some things that I was feeling, just share that information and the struggle that I was going through, which I didn’t quite understand. And it wasn’t because I’m stubborn or just because I’m a father, a man, and didn’t want to go to a doctor. It is just something I thought was so minor that I could overcome it, just by taking care of myself.”

The Daytime Emmy winner then revealed his actual diagnosis, “So, basically my situation was high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE). With some good friends, doctors that had reached out to me, it kind of gave me some understanding on the aftermath, which was very, very beneficial.”

“But I’ve been resting, taking care of myself even though I live in a hamster wheel,” said the dad of three teenaged boys. “I gotta get up and, you know, do my normal domesticated stuff, eventually. I’m tired of laying down in this bed, but, I am feeling much better.”

Photo: GVaughanIG

Talking on his confusion of trying to understand what could have been ailing him, Vaughan expressed, “I couldn’t quite figure it out, even though I was emphasizing and professing to my children going on our spring break getaway about hydration. I professed it. But, even though I was acting on it, it had a greater effect on me, and for which I did not even think, because my head was such in pain, and I was in a very bad state of mind – not being able to be out there with my kids on the mountain, enjoying their time, as well. I thought I was doing the right thing. Unfortunately, my lungs were full of fluids and my head was in severe pain and even migraine pills didn’t even help. So, I just want anybody that goes into the Colorado Mountains to know, it is no joke. It is this very serious thing which I guess is why they call it the Mile High City.”

Greg had a mountain of ‘thank you’s’ to give for the outreach he received from his original post, “For everybody internationally, wherever you are, I love you and I appreciate you and just the time and the thoughts that you’ve shared with me,” said Vaughan. “I didn’t realize that it would make such an impression on so many people around the world. I feel tremendously loved and I can’t say it enough. I’m good. And I appreciate you.”

Photo: GVaughanIG

The actor concluded his video with, “To all the family and friends that have reached out to me, man, it means the world. So take care of yourself, enjoy your spring break with your families. It’s Saint Patty’s Day, obviously. I wish I could be out there.” Vaughan added, “I feel loved and touched and I can’t emphasize that enough. I’ll take better care of myself, promise you will do the same.” Before he signed off, Greg shared, “Just know, that I’m alive and well and breathing, and I’m sore. So, be well, take care. I mean it. Thank you, tremendously.”

Glad to know that Greg has been on the mend, and shared his appreciation for everyone that reached out to him during this trying time? Comment below.

Scott Evans, host of Access Hollywood and the Peacock reality series Couple to Throuple, will make a guest appearance this week on Days of our Lives.

Circle the Thursday, March 21st episode of DAYS for Evans’ arrival in Salem. Days of our Lives Star Greg Vaughan Shares Sudden Health Scare: “I Truly Feel Like I Work & Live in a Soap Opera!”

What started out as an adventure with his sons, quickly turned into a nightmare for Days of our Lives Daytime Emmy winner, Greg Vaughan (Eric Brady).

In a series of Instagram posts, Vaughan shared the sudden health crisis he found himself in.  The images show Greg with an oxygen tank to help him breathe.

The actor began to fill people, sharing, “I’ve said more than a few times, I truly feel like I work & live in a Soap Opera! 🤪 this trip was nothing short of another great Vaughan adventure!”

He went on to say that on a father and son Colorado spring break trip, he began to feel shortness of breath, feeling tired and with a headache and after two days of hoping he would feel better, Vaughan finally went to an Urgent Care to get checked out.

Photo: GVaughanIG

“I finally surrendered & went to urgent care and to my shock I learned that I was experiencing severe altitude sickness.” Vaughan admitted. “My Blood Oxygen was at 54% & my lungs were full of fluids! Blood oxygen, also known as oxygen saturation, represents the percentage of hemoglobin in your red blood cells that is carrying oxygen. Most people have an oxygen level of 95-100%….”

Providing more detail to his health scare, Greg shared, “Well, 4hrs later, a couple of bags of IV & oxygen tank strapped to my face, I was told that I needed to immediately get off the mountain! However I couldn’t, we still had another day to go & wanting the boys to enjoy their last day on the hill tops! I opted to go home with an oxygen tank, a good laugh for everyone, and I know will follow, but my boys looked after their old man & fortunately they had friends on this trip!”

Photo: JPI

The experience of altitude sickness in the Colorado Rockies gave Vaughan a bit of a new perspective, “In all seriousness, no matter your age, and all the times I’ve ⛷️ & 🏂 in my lifetime, Colorado Rockies is no joke! As they say, ‘ take a breathe and smell the roses!’ That is truly something we need to remember & appreciate! #recover”

Share your well-wishes to Greg as he continues to be on the mend via the comment section below.
