‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).
Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.
Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON
Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”
Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).
Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.
“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?
During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.
Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.
You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.
Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Reconnects with Danny; Tristan Roberts Arrives in Port Charles, Lots of Nods to #16

General Hospital’s 16,000th episode was packed with little reminders through points in today’s script that the ABC daytime drama series has set another milestone and it paved the way for the return of fan favorite and newly nominated Daytime Emmy Lead Actor nominee Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The 16,000th episode also introduced viewers to the new surgeon in Port Charles Dr. Tristan Roberts played by Dean Geyer.
Here are the key takeaways and what went down on the July 13 episode: Tristan and Jason are seated next to each other on a plane heading to Port Charles. Throughout the flight, a beaten up Jason has flashbacks to being thrown into, and being held captive in a cell and tortured. It appears Jason is suffering from some form of PTSD from what he was put through after being dragged out of Port Charles by the WSB months ago.
As the plane prepares to land, Tristan tells Jason there would be a car waiting for him once they land and to enjoy the rest of his life. Later, Tristan arrives at the nurses and doctors hub at GH and approaches Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). He tells her his name and that he is the new surgeon on staff.

A REUNION PLUS A HEAD NURSE DEFENDS SONNY
Meanwhile, at the end of the episode, Jason is outside the Quartermaine boathouse looking bewildered when he runs into Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), who is so thrilled to see his father, and the two hugs each other as tears are shed.
Elsewhere, Elizabeth tells Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he thinks its a great idea for him to get the 16th seat on the hospital board, but when it comes times to convince Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) of that, things go awry when Tracy, Laura and Sonny try to work things out. After Tracy launches into Sonny about killing Alan and Monica’s son AJ, Sonny walks away dejected.
Next, Sonny runs into Elizabeth, where he informs her what happened with Tracy. So what’s a head nurse to do? Elizabeth marches into the conference room and reminds Tracy of all the different donations and ways Sonny has contributed to the hospital from the Stone Cates AIDS wing, to the Michael Corinthos Center for Pediatric Head Injuries as well as his constant support each year for the GH Nurses’ Ball.

WSB WAR SCARS
Then, in one of the best parts for longtime fans of the series, Elizabeth talks about her legendary grandparents, Audrey and Steve Hardy and she tells Tracy they would have wanted Sonny to have a seat on the board for all the good that he has done for the hospital. After Elizabeth states Sonny’s case, things took a turn and Tracy and Sonny wound up shaking hands as Sonny is board member #16.
In the how great was it to see Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) together scenes department, the pick-up of last Friday’s cliffhanger is played out as the two former lovers fill each other in on what has gone down in their lives in the last several months including Valentin admitting he had been living in Carly’s attic, and Anna realizing she was kidnapped by Cullum, Sidwell and Cassius Faison. During their conversation, Anna sees the hallucination of Peter August (Wes Ramsey) right while Valentin is standing there.

Courtesy/ABC
Later Anna was on her way to saying goodbye to Valentin, when the two share an emotional hug. After Valentin made his exit, Peter reappeared and warned Anna to not let Valentin distract her because she has important work to do. Anna answers, “I know.”
So, what did you think of General Hospital’s 16,000 episode? What do you think is wrong with Jason? What is the important “work” that Anna has to do? Were you glad to see Sonny get a seat on the hospital board, or not so much. Weigh-in via the comment section. But first, check out the scenes on Jason and Tristan’s long flight to Port Charles.

Would love to see Sam and Silas emerged in a bubble bath whispering sweet nothings into the other’s ear.
Not because I’m a romantic but mostly because it would be nice to see Silas cleaned up for a change.
I would love to see Franco and Carly stay together and Anna and Duke. They are my two favorite couples of the show right now.
Franco and Carly are great!!! they will last a long time.. 🙂
Anna and Duke need a love break, time to be together!!
I don’t think so–don’t think Roger is happy and won’t be around too much longer.
yes the actors have chemistry, but past history makes the pairing unbelievable!! tumor or no tumor Carly would not jump to Franco. did Sam? no! horrible pairing!!
Just like Carly would never seduce her mother’s husband, or lie about the paternity of her baby with Jason, or plot with Sonny to have AJ look like a deadbeat….Okay! I always found Carly to be all about Carly regardless of who it hurt.
Carly and Franco is ridiculous. The one thing that Carly has ALWAYS been true to is JASON! She would lie to everyone else on the planet, EXCEPT Jason. She would never side with anyone who hurt him, let alone threatened her kids. I hate the revamp of Franco almost as I did the OLTL invasion!
The couples I like are Duke & Anna, Sonny & Olivia, Lulu and Dante. HATE Carly & Franco, Ava & Morgan, Michael & Kiki.
I hope that Ava and Morgan stay together. No matter what the writing calls for, these two sell every emotion that has played out. They have chemistry to burn, and the star-crossed mob war romance works for me.
I agree with everything you said. 🙂
Its a soap…some will get together…but in short time theyll just break up again…there are no happy endings on soaps…lol
Ain’t that truth—-once I saw so many of my favorite couples bite the dust over the years, it became hard for this jaded soap fan to get into the romance of ” happily ever after”. Now I enjoy the ride, but my days of rooting for or against any particular couple died with Victor and Nikki’s (Y&R) second divorce or was it their third???
Julian & Alexis!!!!…..truly talented actors who make it fun to watch! Hope they continue to develop this pairing and looking forward to watching all the complications along the way.
well..
Carly and Franco are the #1 couple… love them !!
and
Sam and Silas are #1 couple.. Love them !!……… (it’s a tie!!)
The other couples I could care less about..
I love Ava as a character, Maura West is amazing and plays her to perfection. But her relationship with Morgan sickens me, mostly because I really can’t stand Bryan Craig in the role of Morgan.
I really like Sonny & Olivia, Duke & Anna, and Michael & Kiki (even though I think Kiki is a stupid name, but I digress). Franco & Carly is a bit weird to me considering the past, and Heather needs to go away for a long time because her character has become such a cartoon, which is a shame because I love Robin Mattson.
Lulu & Dante aren’t really the same to me after Julie Marie Berman left, don’t get me wrong, I love Marcy Rylan, but I liked her much better as Abby on Y&R than as Lulu.
Sam and Silas are okay, but I want the whole Nina Clay situation to be revealed, and I have a feeling that somehow Donna Mills’ TBA character will somehow play into that, possibly as Nina’s mother? I don’t know for sure, but I can’t fully invest in Sam and Silas with that still hanging over their heads.
Lulu and Dante spell BORING in capital letters.
Morgan and Ava do steamy very well, but all in all, I don’t go for the cougar/May-December aspect of their relationship.
Carly and Franco – hell NO!
Nic and Britt – Is Nic every going to wise up? I doubt it. I loved Nic with Emily, but not with anyone since.
Sonny and Olivia – who cares?
Anna and Duke – I’m sorry, but there is nothing sexy about these two.
Sam and Silas – eh. I think it would have made an entertaining story if Sam had started falling for AJ despite all Jason told her about him. She would need to hear his side of the story, especially about Sonny and Carly.
Elizabeth is probably best left out there in left field along with Alexis. Neither woman has much luck with love or marriage. They even share a husband who is due back on the screen soon.
In soapdom relationships just don’t last, unless you are Dr. Tom and Alice Horton, or Lila and Edward Quartermaine.
I find writers who break up couples because they feel they become boring are lazyy writers. For many years Bill Bell was able to write for couples that never got divorced and drove story. Bo and Nora were together for years and had TONS of problems. The same could be said for Monica/Alan, and so many long term married couples. Yes they may have separated from time to time, but they used real marriage woes, to tell married stories that were relatable. Damn Nick and Sharon were married for 10+ years and were always frontburner. That says alot. Not sure why every writer takes the easy way out to break up couples when they cant come up with anything. I mean damn, just do what Agnes Nixon did, read a newspaper to find inspiration. Geez just all the stories from all my married relatives could provide stories for at least 5 years.
Mentioning Bo& Nora guess who broke that couple up good old JFP because she brought her good old buddy Kale Browne into play Sam. At one point HBS/Nora was so upset with that storyline she wanted her character killed off. It took us how many years to bring them back together?
#1 Duke and Anna. get the writing back…. i did not like the part… where… he was telling Anna… He joined the mob… because he wanted to be his old self again… he wanted to feel like a man… he was doing this to find himself… ??? whatever the case… it was no reason… for him to just disregard Anna…. she’s told him several times… she knows he was imprisoned… and yes, that changes a person… but… Anna accepts Duke… and that s LOVE… I just love this couple… above all other couples… I depend on these two
Dante and Lulu…. I am coming around…. “finally” whew! I honestly thought there was no going back…. man didnt Jullie Berman’ leaving… almost wreak havoc… but… I love how the little nuances…. of love are realized… she slept at the police station…. waiting for Dante… she is waiting, loving, and supporting her husband… that child will come… you love your man first… I love ER’ Lulu with Ben… that’s going to tear ME apart.
Morgan and Ava…. she told Morgan… “I love You”… how do you like them apples… as different as they may be… they find something in each other… that I dont’ mind… ( I don’t know what that is for sure) but for these two… it works… a semblance of normal? outside the trenches of livelihood? these two are on the same path with their feelings for each other…. I’m digging these two
Britt and Nicholas…. stratospheric pairing… if Liz comes in the middle…. for drama… that’s OK.. because this is QUALITY material… big scenes to eschew… I savor this new coupling… because these 4 shows… have to find ways to move forward… shes’ a newbie… he’s a veteran like… and SMOLDERING! Yikes! he’s at the forefront, like Jason Thompson…. father/husband/lover material…. wait…. too good… i’d mine these two… with care… or not… because, with Liz added in… this a show unto itself… so many avenues on which to cull…. but.. i’ts that love, romance, family, and fantasy demand! Love them
AJ… with whomever… if it’s Liz… get crackin’ the whip… whip up something… Visceral… I liken Sean Kenan… he’s grown up… manned up… grown in to his own… use the word flawed… character…. he’s got it… I like watching him search for words… he uses his script… his body language… and expression… are NICE! refreshing to watch, him interact… if it’s Liz…. definately, Michael…. man… I like this duo…. with his aunt Tracy and mom monica… he’s a gem
Liz… I honestly, don’t think they know how to write a story just for her… and that’s OK… she’s the command and dictionary … of FIYAH… sensual… allure, holds her own, is untapped… and mixes in so well with all the cast… and it’s fun to watch how she reigns her being…you can place her anywhere on the canvas… and she’ll mix and mingle
I can’t really comment on Patrick and Robin. too dissapointing.
Carlos and Sabrina? why NOT? go this route… venture in to a new audience… I like Carlos… and his gut tells him… he coulda woulda shoulda loved this woman… and another mans child…. he’s deflated… but… I like his fire… he should pick himself up by the bootstraps… and want her back…. amp him up… and Sabrina should savor his
Brad and Lucas… with Felix: it’s steamy to me too…. I can’t believe… my love life… is on -this was not a choice… i’m relating to this story…. I’ll soapbox all the time… for this good stuff – same emotions –
————
Please bring back Joe, Scully 3rd… for Tracy
I LOVE My Big Mac and SO Lovely Felicia
I admire you being able to deal with the recast ‘s L. For me, the beautiful individuality that was L’s Luke Spencer edge combined with Laura’s heart has been supplanted by a new character that bears no resemblence to that genetic pedigree. L has always been about more than just a baby and D by themselves. Now she is so pigeonholed as D’s wife and just wanting a baby that she now is nothing more than a plot point, vanilla pod. Another example. Where is the up and coming entrepeneur that was turning The Haunted Star into a club and dining establishment that would place her among the movers and shakers of Port Charles? Nowhere to be seen, hardly even mentioned. And it’s writing that I find insulting to the strong but still sensitive and loving young woman Julie Marie Berman built, layer by layer. That I find the young woman’s acting ability not much more than mediocre only adds to the further destruction of this once proud and noble character. But that’s me….
I want to know what is going to happen between Sabrina, Patrick and Robin on Valentine’s Day.
Looks great!!! The mysterious proposal will be Duke asking Anna to marry him…. just guessing?
I love Franco/Carly, Morgan/Ava, Nik/Britt, Sam/Silas, and Julian/Alexis.
So, basically, every couple that is doomed. LOL.
I like Duke and Anna, as well, but, in my heart, I’m forever, hopelessly holding out hope for Robert and Anna, so I can’t fully invest. But love both characters, both actors, and the storyline they’re in right now (opposite sides of the law- very appealing).
Sonny and Olivia are alright, but they’re more interesting as friends, partners in crime.
I love the beginning stages of the triangle between Felix/Brad/Lucas; still undecided which two I’m really rooting for 😉
None of these couples have any chemistry. Anna and Duke did once upon a time but now he seems like Uncle Arthur (Paul Lynde) to her Samantha Stephens Elizabeth Montgomery). Carly and Franco make me ill together–please get rid of this ill conceived idea.
And Lucas can do so much better than mouth breathing brad and that gossipy bytch Felix. Aren’t there any more gay men in Port Charles? Too bad Jason Morgan had to die.
Julian and Alex do not have it going on–it’s unseemly to see Alexis act more immature than Molly. And how many times can this fifty year old woman keep playing a born again virgin? Julian seems to have more chemistry with his own daughter, and he’d be
terrific with Lizzy.
The only couple I kind like are Nikolas and Britt. Love in the Afternoon has been replaced by Dread and Wrath.
Oh Harry….you make me laugh!!!! But you are so right about Alexis: it is highly unbecoming for her to be behaving like a giggly, gushing teenager in heat every time Julian is within close range! As a couple, I don’t see them as having any chemistry at all….what he really seems to need is a younger, more dangerous, daring type, like Sam, but of course, NOT Sam for obvious reasons!!! I also thought he clicked with Carly…and although I would not go so far as you did with your assessment of her mismatch with Franco, their storyline really is not working…not sure at this point with whom he should be coupled, but changes need to made. I also agree with you about Nik and Britt…they wonderfully mesh together….looking forward to more from them. I also enjoy Sam and Silas, today’s gross pizza scene aside!!! Furthermore, the sooner Dr. O. and Victor get together, the better….I think they could be super as a power pair….very hot, yet cold as ice!!!….As for Liz (and the underused AJ.) please either reunite them or find other partners soon. Lastly, hope Robin and Patrick have a sweet Valentine scene since we know their happy days are numbered…that being said, if there is a soapgod, Drake Jr. will NEVER get back together with his banal babymama! I still think that she should be sent away with her lapdog Felix in tow, since I don’t see how he could exist without having her to surround his entire day and night schedule…he would actually have to get—a—life!!!!!
Who cares! Give me Robert and Anna, Jason and Sam, Sonny and Brenda, Bobbi and Tony, Luke and Holly, Scotty and Laura, and Alan and Monica. Oh, okay, one current couple, Franco and Carly are growing on me!
What they really should hope for is.I bother to stay with them at all. I haven’t watched and from what I read on the boards. who cares? Will Robin get to spend valentines day with her family or is that for Suebrina? They lost Tristan, Robins been demonized to the tenth degree, Anna is a keystone cop and they poured my AJ in the bottle. Is this how they will send Michael back to the sainted mobster.? Bad AJ oh well happy Valentines day to everyone else, anyway.
Favorite romantic was and continues to be Stefan Cassadine.
I hate that GH and its several producers failed to utilize him and instead sacrificed him to the altar of a younger less dynamic man and handing Luke a silly win yet again. That was trite and a horrible waste of talent and a far more interesting and intelligent character.
The problem with today’s producers are an abundance of ego in which they hire their buddies, they prop the younger guys to the nines and a couple of divas instead of fleshing out characters and delving into what makes them tick and the far more interesting. What would have been more interesting than fleshing out why Helena hated her younger son and how that affected him. Why not establish a more sensible explanation that could have given substance to both Stefan and Nikolas? Had Stavros been the product of an affair Helena was hiding and not the prince or heir at all, Stefan was the threat to her precious first born as the true Cassadine heir. Have Nikolas and Stefan realize the lies in their lives and an identity crisis for both. Nikolas learning he is not the privileged heir of all! Stefan realizing he was lead to be subservient to his nephew and abused mentally his entire life because of a lie. Have Helena have to face off with both and seek out new relationships if she could manage to do so. Its far better than Luke prancing around drinking all the time and pretending he can out fight the world. Move on with relationships and even how that affects Laura or a woman from the past long ignored. I appreciate fleshed out characters rather than cartoons. Sad it is that the producers like cheap cartoons today
I love Franco and Carly!!!
me too
Me three! 🙂
I hope and pray that Silas and Sam stay as a couple! They belong together! Their chemistry is amazing, SEXY and HOT!!! I love watching them. They are so good together! Their love story is like a great romance novel that gets juicer and juicer as you read on….Silas and Sam forever!!
my favorite couple is Carly and Franco love them
Love Morgan and Ava and Britt and Nik.
Hate Carly and Franco, Michael and Kiki.
The rest are just boring. I mostly watch Days now and just watch clips on YT of GH.
