TODAY Would Have Been One Life to Live's 44th Anniversary!

Courtesy/ABC

Courtesy/ABC

Hard to believe that six months ago, One Life to Live aired its last episode on January 13th, 2012.  Oh, if only ABC could turn back the clock and their terrible decision to cancel the show, One Life today would be celebrating it’s 44th anniversary.

Imagine:  the series would be continuing its upward climb in the ratings, as the show that was the ‘little-engine-that-could’ in the ABC Daytime line-up was on fire until it’s final air show.  And a special thanks for that is owed to the powerful writing and producing teams, and stellar performances from the acting ensemble.

One Life to Live was created by the incredible genius of Agnes Nixon and launched on ABC on July 15th, 1968.   From the original families of the Lords, Woleks and Craigs up till the end with the Buchanans, Cramers, Lords and more, it was the show that had more heart, humor, and drama that non can compare.

Now on would have been the shows 44th year, take a look after the jump at most of the show openings through 1968 and on!  Let us know your thoughts on this sad and frustrating day, as On-Air On-Soaps pays tribute to the legacy of Llanview!

The one from Peabo Bryson (with vocals) from 1986 to December 1991 was by far the best one.

Yup- love that song. Wouldn’t it be great if the crappy heads of ABC realize what a huge MISTAKE they made, and bring back our damn soaps?! I say we all band together and BOYCOTT Katie till they bring back One Life and move Couric to 4:00!

it’s a nice idea about boycotting, but i don’t think it’s the right thing to do. OLTL is gone. Beleive me i hate that fact as much as all of you but it’s true. there are millions of hours of old clips and things on youtube to enjoy. they even just put up some “new” scenes of old Viki and joe from the late 1970’s. just watch and enjoy what once was. even if Katie’s show fails, it will take them a while to find out and then they’ll probably just put GMA on again or move GH back. boycotting… Read more »

Don’t worry, none of the new shows are ever going to make it…none of them will last as long as OLTL did thats for sure. This may sound crazy but even when im in a waiting room or somewhere they have the tv on I make sure ABC isn’t on especially during OLTL time slot…don’t want any rating signals going out to anyone thinking that people like those new shows…

Hmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!! That would be great if that happened…I think boycotting will do some good … The revolution for example was boycotted & was cancelled…Can’t see why it can’t keep on working..And The Chew is next on the chopping block with a 1.9 rating………

I remember the intro of OLTL the one when you see the cast & the singer singing the theme song to OLTL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They save the best picture for last Erika Slezak(Viki) my #1 favorite of OLTL………….This inttro brings back wonderful memories of OLTL for me….Seeing Asa’s picture appear WOW!! I missed seeing him on OLTL!!!! And everyone looked so young..It must have been the the late 80’s or early 90’s that is what I am assuming when they started this intro to OLTL !!!!!!!!!! I remember that 1985 episode of GH…I was watching it that day… Robin was so adorable at that age…Of course Anna never told Robert he had a daughter..This is when GH was at it’s best….Shawn Donneely was there in the 80’s , Frisco & Felicca,And Robin meets Mack for the first time….This is when I really enjoyed GH… Gh needs to get back to these kind of stories for sure!!!! I miss the GH of so many years ago… Luke & Laura’s wedding..I saw that episode….When Robert saw Anna again but he was married to Holly…Anna came to Robert’s door…The… Read more »

It still makes me feel sad – knowing that OLTL is gone. It was an important part of my life; I’m recording as many of the late nite SoapNet reruns of it as possible. Such wonderful storylines, acting, always some humor thrown in. ABC is run by fools; what shows have they come up with since OLTL and AMC were cancelled that have such viewer loyalty still? None, there’s nothing but cheap garbage on as filler for time slots of our great soaps. ABC, you run a sad organization. My boycott of your network will never waiver.

One thing we should remember about OLTL is that we had 40+ years of having Erika Slezak who gave an acting master class every day she was on. No soap has ever had an actress rival what she brought to the small screen. She could stand toe to toe with any of Hollywood’s A-List at any time.

I agree Jim, Erika is the heart and soul of OLTL. Every day she was on was a must-see day. Interesting to see all the show openings because I only saw the last one.

I agree Erika Slezak was the heart of OLTL….I don’t remember some of the openings for OLTL from years ago…The one with the flames…..I like the most recent one …………………….That intro was so dear to my heart..When you heard it you knew OLTL was on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want my favorite soap OLTL back…My heart-warming story. NO OTHER SOAP CAN COMPARE TO OLTL…NOTHING EVEN COMES CLOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT WAS ONE OF A KIND(OLTL)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You said it, there is no one in daytime that can compare to her and I know she could do anything she wanted, she is the best. I miss her and I want her back along with my daily visits to landview on One life to live nothing will ever take the place of that soap and the many characters we watched every day, I will never understand abc’s decision to let that soap get cancelled I am watching general hospital but that soap will never be better than One life to live.

There is such a huge void on daytime TV without Erika Slezak. I miss her and the rest of the cast of OLTL so much. Having a handful of our favorite Llanview characters on GH is a small consolation, but abcd should really eat crow, admit they made a bad decision and bring back OLTL and stat! Your right about that, no other soap had that family feeling not like one life to live, All my children did come in second, General hospital use to but the mob fixed that. General hospital has to go back to their roots and bring back the quartermaines, I miss their family discussions and arguments and the thanksgiving dinner that was always replaced for a pizza. One Life to Live will forever live in our hearts. It was a fabulous show with the most talented actors and actresses. It was a show that drew in its viewers and kept them loyal for 40+ years. Having watched it my entire life and loving Erika Slezak’s portrayal of Viki, there will never be anything to feel the void we have of not having the characters of Llandview continue their stories the way they were meant to . . . .

Erika Slezak is a much better actress than Ms. Lucci could ever be..I say this because I watched episodes of OLTL on you tube and watched Viki fighting all her alters ..This was in the late 80’s & with the original Clint…Fighting tommy & jean..Finally Clint got Viki to come out….WOW!!! What an actress Ms. Slezak is!!!!!!! Pure geneious…………..What talent…Seeing her go from one personality to another……………………..Not that Ms Lucci wasn’t a good actress but in my opinion Erika Slezak was so much better…Never got tired of watching Viki….And OLTL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Michael, Thank you for that moving tribute and trip down memory lane. I actually remember everyone of those intros!

I was hoping that once Prospect Park’s leasing rights deals expire ABC would release AMC & OLTL on DVD like GL did. Also, I was hoping some party who knows what they are doing could revibe the shows under a different, financially feasible business model. I think Prospect Park committing to producing a one hour, 5 day per week soap was unrealistic. Sadly.

GH writers/producer – ex OLTL guys have been assisinating the OLTL characters. I hate what they have done to John, sorry I ever started watching GH. Todd is not much better – he no longer is ruthless, yet he & Blair are allowed to still be together! Bring Natalie for John and quit destroying their story, Please!!!! And then the killing of Hope, Victor Jr. & Cole…FV/RC are disloyal to the OLTL fans – that’s all I can say! It sure doesn’t bring OLTL fans over to watch GH.

TONIGHT: 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards on CBS

Who will take home the gold at Sunday night’s 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards?  Well, from the looks of it .two heavy favorites going into it are Ted Lasso in the comedy categories, and The Crown in the dramatic categories, but as we have seen on previous Emmys there may be upsets afoot.

Other leading contenders through the night will include the series: The Mandalorian, WandaVision, The Handmaid’s Tale, Saturday Night Live, Lovecraft CountryThe Queen’s Gambit and Mare of Easttown.

Cedric the Entertainer will host the three-hour special on CBS beginning at 8 pm EST emanating from the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles.  Pandemic and all there will be a return to an opening number.

Photo: CBS

The broadcast’s executive producer, Ian Stewart, confirmed an opening number, when he previously told Deadline, the number “is going to be a lot of people participating, singing, rapping.  It’s hopefully going to be a very impactful start, a ton of fun.”

The Primetime Emmys will have nominees in attendance, with a more limited amount virtually, and those who have tickets can stay in the venue through the whole show, unlike the Grammys or Oscars were those nominated were ushered in and out.  Look for the Emmys to take place outside the theatre under a tent.

Photo: RGoldsberry

One Life to Live alum Renée  Elise Goldsberry (Ex-Evangeline) will be competing in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her role in Hamilton.  Another OLTL alum, Jonathan Groff (Ex-Henry), is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his role in Hamilton, as well.

Photo: NBC

In the Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, Sterling K. Brown tries to win another Emmy for his role as Randall Pearson on This Is Us.   To view all the nominees, head on over to the TV Academy’s website.

This past June, CBS also aired the 48th annual Daytime Emmy Awards in a pre-packaged show for broadcast due to Covid-19 restrictions.

So, who are you rooting for to win the gold at the 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards? Comment below.

General Hospital

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Sonny Remembers Carly Just as She Is Marrying Jason

After nine months of being “Mike”, Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) had a major breakthrough as his memory is all coming back to him now (as the Celine Dion song says), and in the process the Tan-O has burned to the ground, signaling the the probable end to the Nixon Falls arc of the story.

As the story picked-up on Thursday, Nina’s (Cynthia Watros) plot to keep Sonny for herself and away from Carly majorly backfired on her.  Not only does Phyllis (Joyce Guy) now know that Nina lied about “Mike’s” identify the entire time, but Peter August (Wes Ramsey) is running wild and free heading back to Port Charles to claim his baby and Maxie (Kirsten Storms), after setting fire to the building.

Courtesy/ABC

Since “Mike” ran in to save Nina and got hit by a beam in the process, he is alone in the burning Tan-O enveloped by flames, but that triggers the beginning of his memory coming back.

Meanwhile, back in Port Charles, Jason (Steve Burton) and Carly (Laura Wright) are at their wedding, with the five family mob bosses present with a plot of their own and everyone wondering if Jarly will say “I do'”.    The two light a candle together for those loved ones no longer with them … ah, Sonny!

Back the burning Tan-O, Sonny is visited by the vision of the real Mike (Max Gail) who tells him it’s time for him to go home now.  A conflicted Sonny tells Mike he is very happy in Nixon Falls with Nina, but Mike tells him he needs to know his past in order to move forward.  When Sonny has flashes of his violent past it frightens him, and he says whatever family he has is better off without him in their lives.

Jax (Ingo Rademacher) tries to text Maxie while still in Nixon Falls with Nina to watch out for Peter, but she is attending and managing Carly and Sonny’s wedding, so she doesn’t pick up the phone!

Inside the Tan-O, Sonny sees a vision of woman, who when she turns and faces him is Carly. While Sonny is lying on the floor and is engulfed in flames and trapped, Mike tells Sonny he can die as “Mike” or live on as the man he truly is, Sonny.  It is then Sonny calls out “Carly!”

So, what did you think of the episode? Do you think Carly and Jason will get married? Will Sonny tells Nina he remembers? What will Nina’s next move be? Are you glad Sonny seems to have his memory back? The episode featured another strong performance by Maurice Benard.  Share your thoughts below.
