Hard to believe that six months ago, One Life to Live aired its last episode on January 13th, 2012.  Oh, if only ABC could turn back the clock and their terrible decision to cancel the show, One Life today would be celebrating it’s 44th anniversary.

Imagine:  the series would be continuing its upward climb in the ratings, as the show that was the ‘little-engine-that-could’ in the ABC Daytime line-up was on fire until it’s final air show.  And a special thanks for that is owed to the powerful writing and producing teams, and stellar performances from the acting ensemble.

One Life to Live was created by the incredible genius of Agnes Nixon and launched on ABC on July 15th, 1968.   From the original families of the Lords, Woleks and Craigs up till the end with the Buchanans, Cramers, Lords and more, it was the show that had more heart, humor, and drama that non can compare.

Now on would have been the shows 44th year, take a look after the jump at most of the show openings through 1968 and on!  Let us know your thoughts on this sad and frustrating day, as On-Air On-Soaps pays tribute to the legacy of Llanview!

The one from Peabo Bryson (with vocals) from 1986 to December 1991 was by far the best one.

Love it as well. Just too much Tina during that era.

Yup- love that song. Wouldn’t it be great if the crappy heads of ABC realize what a huge MISTAKE they made, and bring back our damn soaps?! I say we all band together and BOYCOTT Katie till they bring back One Life and move Couric to 4:00!

it’s a nice idea about boycotting, but i don’t think it’s the right thing to do. OLTL is gone. Beleive me i hate that fact as much as all of you but it’s true. there are millions of hours of old clips and things on youtube to enjoy. they even just put up some “new” scenes of old Viki and joe from the late 1970’s. just watch and enjoy what once was. even if Katie’s show fails, it will take them a while to find out and then they’ll probably just put GMA on again or move GH back. boycotting won’t do any good. sorry.

Don’t worry, none of the new shows are ever going to make it…none of them will last as long as OLTL did thats for sure. This may sound crazy but even when im in a waiting room or somewhere they have the tv on I make sure ABC isn’t on especially during OLTL time slot…don’t want any rating signals going out to anyone thinking that people like those new shows…

Hmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!! That would be great if that happened…I think boycotting will do some good … The revolution for example was boycotted & was cancelled…Can’t see why it can’t keep on working..And The Chew is next on the chopping block with a 1.9 rating………

I miss OLTL so much. ABC really did cancel the wrong soap.

Alley I couldn’t agree with you more! Miss the whole cast.

So true! ABC made a BIG mistake cancelling such a popular soap! They will never find a replacement for that timeslot!

I agree with you Alley!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They sure did cancel the wrong soap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember the intro of OLTL the one when you see the cast & the singer singing the theme song to OLTL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They save the best picture for last Erika Slezak(Viki) my #1 favorite of OLTL………….This inttro brings back wonderful memories of OLTL for me….Seeing Asa’s picture appear WOW!! I missed seeing him on OLTL!!!! And everyone looked so young..It must have been the the late 80’s or early 90’s that is what I am assuming when they started this intro to OLTL !!!!!!!!!! The next one they did without the singer & just theme music & seeing all our beloved actors & actresses of OLTL flashing before us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seeing this made me miss OLTL even more !!!!! Watched OLTL on soap net channel on cablevision cable co. Adrenia was engaged to Rex..And GiGI was in the picture & trying to get some dirt on gigi with the help of her mother Dorian..Trying to locate Brody…And remember they found him in a bar…..Adrenia was so jealous of GiGi….And adrenia was such a spoiled brat…Didn’t care for her much..Glad when Rex got back with GiGi & dumped Adrenia..Loved GiGi with Rex and the rest is history!!!!!!!!!! As the theme song goes ” WE ONLY HAVE ONE LIFE TO LIVE.”

Adrenia was trying to get some dirt on GiGI…………

I remember that 1985 episode of GH…I was watching it that day… Robin was so adorable at that age…Of course Anna never told Robert he had a daughter..This is when GH was at it’s best….Shawn Donneely was there in the 80’s , Frisco & Felicca,And Robin meets Mack for the first time….This is when I really enjoyed GH… Gh needs to get back to these kind of stories for sure!!!! I miss the GH of so many years ago… Luke & Laura’s wedding..I saw that episode….When Robert saw Anna again but he was married to Holly…Anna came to Robert’s door…The look on his face was priceless……..Again this when I enjoyed GH THE MOST!!!!!!!!!!!!!Then the stories got too dark for me in 2000 or maybe a little earlier. And Sonny came on GH..The start of all the mob stories started…………..This story got out of hand…And lasted too long for me..I liked the stories on GH from when I first saw it with my mom ..And from the late 60’s-90’s and toward the middle of 2000…Then I stopped watching Gh for a while…Enjoyed Gh so much way back then & they are memorable.. Gh needs a face-lift…….Stories like from years ago they were heart-warming…Not so much today..These kind of stories is what GH is lacking a lot..

I agree they really messed up when they canceled one life to live!

It still makes me feel sad – knowing that OLTL is gone. It was an important part of my life; I’m recording as many of the late nite SoapNet reruns of it as possible. Such wonderful storylines, acting, always some humor thrown in. ABC is run by fools; what shows have they come up with since OLTL and AMC were cancelled that have such viewer loyalty still? None, there’s nothing but cheap garbage on as filler for time slots of our great soaps. ABC, you run a sad organization. My boycott of your network will never waiver.

One thing we should remember about OLTL is that we had 40+ years of having Erika Slezak who gave an acting master class every day she was on. No soap has ever had an actress rival what she brought to the small screen. She could stand toe to toe with any of Hollywood’s A-List at any time.

I agree Jim, Erika is the heart and soul of OLTL. Every day she was on was a must-see day. Interesting to see all the show openings because I only saw the last one.

I agree Erika Slezak was the heart of OLTL….I don’t remember some of the openings for OLTL from years ago…The one with the flames…..I like the most recent one …………………….That intro was so dear to my heart..When you heard it you knew OLTL was on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want my favorite soap OLTL back…My heart-warming story. NO OTHER SOAP CAN COMPARE TO OLTL…NOTHING EVEN COMES CLOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT WAS ONE OF A KIND(OLTL)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You said it, there is no one in daytime that can compare to her and I know she could do anything she wanted, she is the best. I miss her and I want her back along with my daily visits to landview on One life to live nothing will ever take the place of that soap and the many characters we watched every day, I will never understand abc’s decision to let that soap get cancelled I am watching general hospital but that soap will never be better than One life to live.

I agree with you about GH that it will never be better than OLTL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are as different as night & day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Barbara t. Loves one life to live #1…..PLEASE READ MY COMMENT ON 7/16 AT 9:07A.m……………………. This from Susan M….Seeing all the intro’s to OLTL WELL read MY COMMENT AND YOU WILL SEE WHAT I MEAN!!!

And I made a correction See 9/16 at 9:20am..Read the other one first..

Seeing all the intro’s to OLTL made me happy & sad!!!! Seeing Gh’s stories from the 80’s made want to see these kind of stories again on GH at present time…..Bring back the good old day’s of Gh which I miss a lot….OLTL I sill miss so very much and want it back so badly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DITTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love watching the OLTL clips….Seeing the faces from the past & present!!!! So heart-warming!!!!!!!!!!!!! And emotional !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We need this soap back something awful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best said !! Nothing but the best from Erika, everyday she was on. Thanks once again for the 40 plus years.

I never once Fast forwarded ES as Viki!

I have watched OLTL from 1973 till it ended. Every day I mourn its fate. I still maintain my ABC boycott. As a child my goal was to grow up and be the shows historian. ABC took away that dream. Thank god for youtube.

SOB..I sure do miss my show.. every single day..it’s nice that some get to act on GH but it is just NOT ENOUGH. Miss all the actors and actresses..

It just isn’t the same for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Miss ny heart-warming soap OLTL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Doesn’t abc see how we miss OLTL!!!!!!!!!!! And wat it back sooooooo badly!!!

There is such a huge void on daytime TV without Erika Slezak. I miss her and the rest of the cast of OLTL so much. Having a handful of our favorite Llanview characters on GH is a small consolation, but abcd should really eat crow, admit they made a bad decision and bring back OLTL and stat! Long live ONE LIFE TO LIVE.

I miss OLTL everyday 🙁

So do I !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OLTL was one of the best soaps on. I started watching in 1972 and watched till the end. Was a very sad day when it ended I pray everyday it comes back on. I miss all the actors. They became family and I looked forward to seeing them everyday.I will not watch anything on BC except GH

OLTL was like one one happy family…………….And Viki held it together…

Your right about that, no other soap had that family feeling not like one life to live, All my children did come in second, General hospital use to but the mob fixed that. General hospital has to go back to their roots and bring back the quartermaines, I miss their family discussions and arguments and the thanksgiving dinner that was always replaced for a pizza. I can remember a long time ago when all the staff left the mansion and the quartermaines didn’t know how to use a coffee maker or even know what it was, I made a comment about that because Monica is a Doctor and I am sure she has had a cup of coffee from a coffee maker before, it was funny.

PLEASE READ MY OTHER COMMENTS…Tou might find them intersting….On this site….HURRAY FOR OLTL 44 YEARS…I WANT MORE!! AGAIN SEE MY OTHER COMMENTS !!!! let me know what you think!!!!

I agree with all of your comments and It’s sad that One life to live turned 44 years old and we can’t watch it anymore. I go to u tube to watch I also watch on soapnet, How long I get to watch it on soapnet is another story. How terrible for abc to cancel our soap and replace it with garbage programing, I will always miss my characters from Landview.

Barbara t..Loves one life to live #1.. Type in your computer : One Life to Live theme song….You will find a lot of interesting stuff about OLTL..Interviews with Erika Slezak & old Asa B….And interview with Regis with Erika.. Other interviews on GMA celebrating OLTL 25th anniversity….(great one)… And more.. Go to this site I think you will really enjoy this alot.. One of the intro’s to OLTL you see Wanda’s picture flashing before you… And other’s from OLTL from the past(80’s)………………..So take a look…ENJOY!!!!!!!!!! I know I will..Makes me sad & happy at the same time..So see for yourself and let me know what you think!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the montage of openings! It literally brought tears to my eyes, because I miss this show sooo much. Everyday, it’s a fresh wound when I contemplate another afternoon without OLTL and AMC. The anger that we fans still feel continues to fuel the boycott of all things ABC/D. Iger and Sweeney should rot in hell!

Still really, really miss OLTL. Still that week day void in my life that won’t go away. 🙁 Thx for the wonderful montage Marc

One Life to Live will forever live in our hearts. It was a fabulous show with the most talented actors and actresses. It was a show that drew in its viewers and kept them loyal for 40+ years. Having watched it my entire life and loving Erika Slezak’s portrayal of Viki, there will never be anything to feel the void we have of not having the characters of Llandview continue their stories the way they were meant to . . . .

Erika Slezak is a much better actress than Ms. Lucci could ever be..I say this because I watched episodes of OLTL on you tube and watched Viki fighting all her alters ..This was in the late 80’s & with the original Clint…Fighting tommy & jean..Finally Clint got Viki to come out….WOW!!! What an actress Ms. Slezak is!!!!!!! Pure geneious…………..What talent…Seeing her go from one personality to another……………………..Not that Ms Lucci wasn’t a good actress but in my opinion Erika Slezak was so much better…Never got tired of watching Viki….And OLTL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want to see Viki & Clint get married…From where they left off in Jan… I want all the stories of OLTL to continue!!! They left me wanting more of OLTL….Llanview is a great place to be…………….I can’t say enough about OLTL…It was that AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like a family that soap was….I miss them TERRIBLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only saving grace to this, is the idiot that cancelled AMC & OLTL was shown the door also. I miss both shows terribly!

My heart still aches for this show. I miss it so much.

I miss OLTL so much also!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most definitely happy and sad at the same time i have to go back and see more thank you.

I want to go back to Llanview & Landfair…………………I look at the cast picture of OLTL everyday…I put it in a picture frame……And I say you shoudn’t have been cancelled…And I miss you guys sooooooooooooo much!!!!! OLTL kept me company in my living room Mon.-Fri………………………I want this back so badly…….There is a big void on daytime programming without ONE LIFE TO LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Michael, Thank you for that moving tribute and trip down memory lane. I actually remember everyone of those intros!

I was hoping that once Prospect Park’s leasing rights deals expire ABC would release AMC & OLTL on DVD like GL did. Also, I was hoping some party who knows what they are doing could revibe the shows under a different, financially feasible business model. I think Prospect Park committing to producing a one hour, 5 day per week soap was unrealistic. Sadly.

Watching the multiple show openings made me tear up NOTHING can replace OLTL in my heart. I miss it and all the cast members. Hate how they are dismantling John, Natalie and Liam on top of it.

Yes Natalie & John & Liam should definetely be together..After all they finally got back together..Shouldn’t that continue where they left off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would think so…..They are a team a family and yhey BELONG together!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The last episode they got back together and that’s the way it should be…Shouldn’t that relationship continue on GH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What is up with writers..I don’t like them changing this storyline around………….They need to get back on track with this story & others…Do new ones that are different not a carbon copy of OLTL….Or we might lose GH as well..Hope not!!! What I’m really trying to say is that I want OLTL BACK…I want to Llanview & Landfair back !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GH writers/producer – ex OLTL guys have been assisinating the OLTL characters. I hate what they have done to John, sorry I ever started watching GH. Todd is not much better – he no longer is ruthless, yet he & Blair are allowed to still be together! Bring Natalie for John and quit destroying their story, Please!!!! And then the killing of Hope, Victor Jr. & Cole…FV/RC are disloyal to the OLTL fans – that’s all I can say! It sure doesn’t bring OLTL fans over to watch GH.

My heart still aches for it too. I have been watching it literally from my first day because my mother used to feed us while watching. No matter what challenges I had in life, OLTL would always, without fail, get my mind off them for that one magical hour a day. It was so relaxing and calming. Nothing compares to the time I had watching it. It’s sad for me that nothing really relaxes me and gets my mind off of problems the way OLTL did. It truly did take me away to another world where I escaped to almost daily. Now that I think about it, I guess I liked Llanview more than my own surroundings. It was like a magical place that I can’t describe. I don’t get that same feeling from Port Charles. Having the OLTL characters there helps and I hope to somehow grow an affection to PC like I did Llanview but I doubt it. I’ll continue to watch GH and am very glad to have them there. It isn’t the same but I can’t expect any place to be.

I agree with you Llan….I have a special place in my heart for OLTL and nothing can replace this soap for me…Don’t feel the same way about GH like I do for OLTL!!! OLTL was A part of my living room for such a long time & nothing else works for me completely like OLTL did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do like seeing them on GH..But it makes me want to see more of the cast from OLTL…Llanview A great place to visit or go back to completely!! I’ll take completely……………

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ONE LIFE TO LIVE. WE SHARE THE SAME BIRTHDAY. I MISS THE SHOW VERY MUCH!

I watched the very first epi of OLTL in 1968, and I miss it terribly…

I started watching One life to live from the beginning to and there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t miss it.

I watched OLTL for 30 years – the vast majority of my life. I miss it so much it astounds me. I still hope that some wise and creative business person will recognize the opportunity to make TV history and revive this wonderful and successful show.

Gone but never forgotten. This was a lovely gesture, Michael. Excellent post, thank you.

I truly miss OLTL and always will. Watched as a child from the beginning, to the incredible close. If there were a way to bring it back….. oh the things that SHOULD be.
Thanks to the wonderful cast which became family to me, especially the amazing Erika Slezak and Robin Strasser. Miss you dearly

The grief I feel over the loss of this show doesn’t seem to diminish as time goes by. I don’t know if I’ll ever stop missing it…

Watched the show right from the beginning…my mother watched the ABC soap line-up…..and they would be on when I got home from school. While seeing some of the characters on GH is great, it is not the same as having OLTL airing.

Loved seeing the openings….only one I ever really disliked was the one that began with a close up of the woman’s eyes. Generic and had nothing relevant to the show.

Thanks for the article, but it really does make me sad. I still miss OLTL so much. I am still not really into GH as my favorite characters: Viki, Clint, Dorian, David, Natalie, etc. are not there. There seems to be such a passionate group of fans that miss this show – more than any other previous soap that was cancelled. The network should take notice of this and bring it back. The viewers would definitely return to the show as so many have shown so much loyalty to OLTL. I agree with the other posters that it was a soap with “heart” which is not easy to achieve. This emotional connection is why so many of us miss it so much.

I watched OLTL from the very first episode to the bitter finale. I WANT OLTL BACK! Damn you ABC/Disney! OLTL should never have been cancelled for cheap “reality” drek!
GIVE US BACK OUR LLANVIEW!

I AGREE WITH YOU 100% !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you think ABC/Disney reads these posts????????? I wonder !!!!

I miss OLTL all the time. Feels like a big hole in daytime tv. It’s a shame the network canceled the show to begin with. The 2:00 p.m. timeslot keeps changing out these loser talk shows. Now in Sept. GH moves in and then another talk show will follow:( Well, I’m holding to my action of just watching soaps during the hours of 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. No soaps during that time, oh well, no tv for me on that channel. That’s the only type of programming that will entertain me, good stories, a la daytime serials. I have NO interest in a multitude of talk shows. It’s just boring, white noise like tv, total garbage.

ABC–“The Revolution”–Buh, bye!!!
“Good Afternoon America–See ya wouldn’t wanna be ya!!!! Or as another said “GMA should hold on to their coffee cups”.

I miss the gracious and talented cast of OLTL immensely. Erika Slezak, humble and talented. Her talent just spoke for itself.

Thanks Mr. Fairman for the article and all the openings of OLTL, felt good and sad going down memory lane.

Happy Birthday OLTL–whereever you are:)

DITTO!!!!!!!!!!! I agree with you Emily…I feel the same way about OLTL and Erika Slezak!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was beautiful. I miss OLTL soo much

I just miss my show.

we love your show i grew up wacthing and what it every day i thank yall need to put it back on the air because it the best show on tv

I agree with YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!

please put the show back on tv we miss you fine away to put back on tv please happy brithday we miss you

Yes it was the best soap Ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is OLTL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It will always BE #1 in my book…………………………Nothing even comes close to OLTL…Loved everything about ONE LIFE TO LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My favorite soap of all time!!! I can’t stop saying wonderful things about OLTL!!!! I am a DEVOTED FAN OF ONE LIFE TO LIVE.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And that will never change…

Watching on line old clips of OLTL…From 1984, 1989, and so on.. It is heart-breaking to see these clips..I miss OLTL soooooo much!!! Saw an old intro to OLTL and Wanda’s picture pop-up & Joe riley , Asa, Megan,Cord,Viki how beautiful she is & still is!!! Viki with the original Clint……………………….Tina going over the water fall….Interview with Regis at their 25th anniversity………………………..One clip Erika was pretty pissed-off about OLTL..Saying viewers want information not entertainment…Quoting B. Frons..OLTL was and is THE GREATEST SOAP OPERA OF ALL TIME!!!!! AND I WANT IT BACK SO VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Remember Ed Hall, Sadie, Vinnie, Larry, Anna, Ilene…And the legacy goes on !!!!!!!!!!!

Bless You OLTL–We Love You! 😀

I loved seeing all of the opening sequences.
Thanks for the memories.

Bring Back OLTL!

I drove by Disneyland today…long lines of cars heading into the parking lots. Target had a large amount of Disney merchandise for sale. And the public watches Disney, Pixar and ABC brand entertainment every day.
If everyone could make one day without any Disney or any of its sponsors. Corporate heads might turn.
I think few of us can make that kind of sacrifice.
Thank You OLTL for 43 years of outstanding television

With all the shows being produced for Netflix – why not OLTL ?

Come on execs – just make the last year available and you’d have a great business.
Add some of the vintage years (Karen Wolek, Meghan and Jake and even old Clint and Vicki- they were priceless – I’d pay to have them available)

I agree with all of you!! Whenever I think of OLTL being cancelled and not being on TV anymore, I get teary-eyed, thinking about Natalie and Liam not being with John. I think they need to all be together. I think Natalie and Liam SHOULD GO to Port Charles to be with John (GH) if John doesn’t come back home to be with them.
It’s just so sad!!! It’s so sad about Liam not being around his daddy to do some serious bonding, along with Natalie to do some serious bonding. They need to be together and get together to be a total family, maybe even possibly get married to be together.

Please bring this show back i miss it dearly i grew up on it i was and am a loyal fan .If not put more of OLTL ‘s people on GH i watch and record it i miss my show and be honest i miss Vicky and her strength loyal fan Jacqui Savattere out of Rhode Island

The best show ever will always live in my heart.

Deidre Hall Marks 50 Years as ‘Days of Our Lives’ Dr. Marlena Evans

Published

on

By

If you have ever tuned-in to the soap opera genre over the last 50 years, and witnessed some of the greatest romances, drama, classic and outlandish storylines of all-time, you would have seen Deidre Hall smack dab in the middle of it as longtime Salem heroine, Dr. Marlena Evans.

It was 50 years on this date, June 21, 1976 that Hall first appeared on DAYS on NBC which was its home for 57 years before it moved to its current streaming platform on Peacock in September of 2022.

In Hall’s first episode she was introduced as a psychiatrist treating Mickey Horton (John Clarke) at Bayview Sanitarium after he suffered a complete mental breakdown. Mickey learned that his brother Bill Horton (Edward Mallory) was the biological son of Mike Horton (Wesley Eure) with his wife Laura (Susan Flannery) and that he had been lied to for years and years. From that moment on, the rest is television and soap opera history. Days of Our Lives put Hall front and center.

Photo: NBC

There were so many heartbreaking and shocking story twists involving the beloved Marlena. One of the first was the historic crib death of baby DJ (Don Jr.) in 1980, Marlena’s infant son with Don Craig (Jed Allan). The story had never been told on daytime television and Hall’s performances received accolades from TV critics to fans when Deidre received thousands of letters from grieving mothers who had gone through the same thing in their own lives.

DAYS also brought Deidre’s twin sister, Andrea Hall Lovell to the show as her on-screen sister Samantha, who had a grudge and even locked Marlena up in a sanitarium and took her place! Fast-forward and in 1982, DAYS launched the Salem Strangler story where everyone believed Marlena was his next victim, only it turned out to be Samatha. Jake Kositchek (played by Jack Coleman) was revealed to be the actual serial killer.

Later, Deidre would assume the role of Marlena’s look-alike, Hattie Adams in 2004, once played by her sister, Andrea. Over the years, Hattie has come back to Salem and caused trouble giving Hall a chance to play a different type of character, then the always upstanding Marlena.

THE LOVES OF MARLENA

Deidre Hall struck gold with all her leading men: from the late Jed Allan, to Wayne Northrop as Roman Brady, and of course, her enduring love story with the late John Black played by the iconic Drake Hogestyn. In fact, Marlena’s 1986 wedding to John (who was believed to be Roman at the time) remains a favorite of fans to this day.

TOP MARLENA STORYLINES OF ALL-TIME

While the list is long, here are several that were some of the memorable during Deidre’s five decades in Salem!

The Possession (1994- 1995)
Considered one of the most ambiguous, outlandish and unforgettable story arcs in soap opera history, then Days of Our Lives head writer, James Reilly went there! Marlena was possessed by the devil! That included; the demonic eyes, hissing at father John (Black) the priest, morphing into creatures, and the classic levitating in her bed! It became a cultural phenomenon and cemented Deidre Hall’s status as a daytime television legend. Just ask Ryan Gosling!

Photo:JPI

The Affair with John Black (1993)
John and Marlena’s forbidden love could not be denied and they had passionate affair, while she was still married to the real Roman. Problem was her daughter, Sami (Alison Sweeney) caught her mother having sex with John on a desk that changed Sami forever.

The Salem Stalker Mystery (2003-2004)
In a shocker, Marlena was revealed to be a serial killer who bumped off several Salem favorites residents who were all alive on the island of Melaswen (spelled “New Salem” backward). Turns out, she was manipulated and gaslighted by Andre DiMera (Thaao Penghlis) to do the “killings” and had no memory of her actions.

The Pier Scene (1991)
This remains Michael Fairman TV’s all-time favorite Deidre Hall moment, which featured some of the best acting in the storied careers of both Hall and Drake Hogestyn.

In the story, a presumed-dead Marlena returns after four years. One foggy night on the pier, John is alone, and Marlena steps out of the fog to reveal herself, and is reunited with the love of her life. You can watch it any year, any decade, and in any moment, and it will have you reaching for the hankies again and again. (best music score fo a soap scene of all-time too!)

Photo: NBC

Kristen’s Secret Room Reveal (1997)
Marlena was caught in Kristen Blake’s (Eileen Davidson) elaborate web of lies, when she was held hostage in a secret wine cellar/room until John managed to track her down, leading to an iconic on-screen reunion. The classic catfight between Hall and Eileen Davidson was one for the ages.

It should be noted that Maison Blanche, Queen of the Night, Possession, Aremid and Lady in a Cage were all a part of classic DAYS storyline and all featured Hall at the epicenter of it from 1993-1996.

THE RECENT YEARS OF MARLENA

In recent years, DAYS brought back the possession 2.0 storyline under then head writer Ron Carlivati in 2021 where the devil leapt back in Marlena after taking advantage of a frail Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes)

In 2025, viewers watched the end of the love story of John and Marlena, as John succumbed to injuries sustained in an explosion saving a vial of medication needed to bring Bo (Peter Reckell) back to life. Marlena has been a widow on-screen since June of 2025 as Hall as portrayed the good doctor struggling with her grief and to move on with her life since his death.

Photo: JPI

One story that never goes away is Stefano DiMera’s (the late Joe Mascolo) obsession with Marlena, his “Queen of the Night.” Even in death, Stefano is toying with her from the great beyond with the mysterious chess set and the missing “pawn,” that he had gifted John and Marlena in his will. With the highly-anticipated returns of Finola Hughes (Anna Devane) on this week’s June 24 episode of General Hospital, Steve Burton’s (Jason Morgan) upcoming return on July 13, which also serves as the ABC daytime drama’s 16,000 episode, things are about to fire on all cylinders in the story, as noted today by series star, Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos).

On Father’s Day, the three-time Daytime Emmy-winning actor and mental health activist took to his Instagram and expressed in a video that he has some unbelievable upcoming senes with the aforementioned Burton and Hughes. Add to that Nazneen Contractor (Justine Turner) and Rick Hearst (Ric Lansing), where Benard gave credit where credit is due to the GH writing team, which is led by co-head writers, Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten..

In this video, Benard said, “I just want to get on here and say that I did some work with Steve Burton, Finola Hughes, Rick Hearst, Nazneen Contractor, and they’re all just fantastic. Truly fantastic. But, I want to say the writing was just exceptional. It truly was. It was exceptional. So, thankful for that kind of writing. I know writers don’t get the credit a lot, but I just want to say to the General Hospital writing team, keep rolling!”

GENERAL HOSPITAL PREVIEW

So now the question becomes, with a major tease like that, what is about to go down between Sonny, Anna, Jason, Justine and Ric? Will we finally get to the end of the line for Sidwell (Carlo Rota), as previously teased by the GH co-head writers? Will we learn what happened to Jason and Anna, fully? Will Justine and Sonny becomes closer or stop their liaisons? And what of Ric? Will he be true blue to his brother or double-cross him? There is a lot at stake as we move further into the summer and one that looks like it could be one of the more exciting ones in years!

FINOLA HUGHES CONFIRMED AMAZING SCENES WITH MAURICE BENARD

As a punctuation point to his video, Benard also shared this written message in the post: “I just did some wonderful scenes with Steve Burton, Rick Hearst, Finola Hughes and Nazneen Contractor and  and unbelievable writing, freaking amazing scenes that you will see in the near future on General Hospital.” In fact, Finola Hughes jumped in the post comment thread and responded, “I loved our scenes so much xxx”

Fans will most likely see all the scenes Benard referred to later in July, since GH tapes approximately six weeks ahead of air.

So, are you excited to see what Maurice is talking about? Are you hyped for what’s to come on GH? Any clue on what you think will go down between the main characters on the soap with the returns of Anna Devane and Jason Morgan to the mix? Weigh-in via the comment section below.
