‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).
Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.
Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON
Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”
Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).
Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.
“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?
During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.
Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.
You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.
Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Reconnects with Danny; Tristan Roberts Arrives in Port Charles, Lots of Nods to #16

General Hospital’s 16,000th episode was packed with little reminders through points in today’s script that the ABC daytime drama series has set another milestone and it paved the way for the return of fan favorite and newly nominated Daytime Emmy Lead Actor nominee Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The 16,000th episode also introduced viewers to the new surgeon in Port Charles Dr. Tristan Roberts played by Dean Geyer.
Here are the key takeaways and what went down on the July 13 episode: Tristan and Jason are seated next to each other on a plane heading to Port Charles. Throughout the flight, a beaten up Jason has flashbacks to being thrown into, and being held captive in a cell and tortured. It appears Jason is suffering from some form of PTSD from what he was put through after being dragged out of Port Charles by the WSB months ago.
As the plane prepares to land, Tristan tells Jason there would be a car waiting for him once they land and to enjoy the rest of his life. Later, Tristan arrives at the nurses and doctors hub at GH and approaches Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). He tells her his name and that he is the new surgeon on staff.

A REUNION PLUS A HEAD NURSE DEFENDS SONNY
Meanwhile, at the end of the episode, Jason is outside the Quartermaine boathouse looking bewildered when he runs into Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), who is so thrilled to see his father, and the two hugs each other as tears are shed.
Elsewhere, Elizabeth tells Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he thinks its a great idea for him to get the 16th seat on the hospital board, but when it comes times to convince Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) of that, things go awry when Tracy, Laura and Sonny try to work things out. After Tracy launches into Sonny about killing Alan and Monica’s son AJ, Sonny walks away dejected.
Next, Sonny runs into Elizabeth, where he informs her what happened with Tracy. So what’s a head nurse to do? Elizabeth marches into the conference room and reminds Tracy of all the different donations and ways Sonny has contributed to the hospital from the Stone Cates AIDS wing, to the Michael Corinthos Center for Pediatric Head Injuries as well as his constant support each year for the GH Nurses’ Ball.

WSB WAR SCARS
Then, in one of the best parts for longtime fans of the series, Elizabeth talks about her legendary grandparents, Audrey and Steve Hardy and she tells Tracy they would have wanted Sonny to have a seat on the board for all the good that he has done for the hospital. After Elizabeth states Sonny’s case, things took a turn and Tracy and Sonny wound up shaking hands as Sonny is board member #16.
In the how great was it to see Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) together scenes department, the pick-up of last Friday’s cliffhanger is played out as the two former lovers fill each other in on what has gone down in their lives in the last several months including Valentin admitting he had been living in Carly’s attic, and Anna realizing she was kidnapped by Cullum, Sidwell and Cassius Faison. During their conversation, Anna sees the hallucination of Peter August (Wes Ramsey) right while Valentin is standing there.

Later Anna was on her way to saying goodbye to Valentin, when the two share an emotional hug. After Valentin made his exit, Peter reappeared and warned Anna to not let Valentin distract her because she has important work to do. Anna answers, “I know.”
So, what did you think of General Hospital’s 16,000 episode? What do you think is wrong with Jason? What is the important “work” that Anna has to do? Were you glad to see Sonny get a seat on the hospital board, or not so much. Weigh-in via the comment section. But first, check out the scenes on Jason and Tristan’s long flight to Port Charles.

is she TJ mom? she’s beautifull.
“General Hospital” needs more new characters.
I am wondering the same thing because I do not understand why this is big news; granted I loved her on Being Erica I am little confuse as to how the bosses at G.H. decides what is consider big news.
Thats what i asked under the ratings topic…T.J.’s mom would make sense!!!
yes, very pretty..
I’m with you thinking it’s TJ’s mom and a big change on the way for Shawn , it would seem..
I like new characters they bring mystery and a new story and always play off the stars, so all have new stories and renewed screen time..
lets see if its not sean who will she become involved with?????
Giant surprise! Donna mills debuting on GH finally!!!
I really like Sean and think he has much more depth as an actor than Jason did as Sonny’s henchman.
agreed
Never mind. Brook Kerr played Whitney on Passions.
There are too many characters on gh they need to trim that cast not add new ones
A deadly virus will be released from the hospital, killing half the cast.
If they killed half the cast they’d just ask Super hero Doc…Robin Drake…to revive them…lol
She is a pretty lady, I hope she stays long term on Gh.
And the big story will end up being that Shaun is the father, Old story told again and again. But must agree with aria,,,,,she is beautiful.
Back on Dec.23 (?) i commented on how i thought Suan would turn out to be T.Js father…i thought T.J.was the one who would be shot during the warehouse shooting…and then it would be revealed Shaun was his father…also once thought he was the father of Felix as well but i doubt the Felix part will happen!!!
Beautiful woman!
hmmm I must have missed her… I don’t remember her and I watched the show today..
She appeared near the end of the show at Kellys where Shaun works and he asked her ‘what she was doing there’ and thats all they really showed of her!!!
Thanks for the update.. must have dvr’d thru that ..
Im not familiar with the actress but I agree she is beautiful. I hope this means some fresh story lines because some of the writing lately should have been rethought. Im really conflicted about my feelings on GH lately part of it is going good and the rest is a joke. So Im glad to see a different role for shawn than who can I kill its getting out of control and he’s to good of an actor. They definitely would make a sexy couple.
How are fans of GH keeping up with all these characters? My goodness, every day a new cast member.
If I was a fan, I’d be furious and fed up. But I’m just a fed up ex-fan.
This fan loves it! Don’t want to see the same people day after day, it becomes boring, predictable, and monotonous. Love the many surprises. If I wanted boring I’d go back to Y&R under the JFP regime.
She’s gotta be TJ’s mom. I hope Sean turns out to be his real dad too.
Vinessa might be Sean’s sister ..
Thats what i said too…and back in Dec. during the warehouse shooting i said something about Suan turning out to be T.J.s dad!!!
Maybe she’s Shawn’s brain, which has been missing a long, long time.
If she’s TJ’s mom, hopefully she’s in PC just to take that kid away. And if she takes Shawn with her, then that is an extra added bonus.
Though Sonny would be devastated losing his BFF Shawn, now that they’ve shared “feelings” on Friday’s show and have lined up a pedicure date for next week.
Nurse Sabrina can be Sonnys new “lets kill ’em” lovin’ sidekick and knock everyone off who comes into the hospital…lol
Sabrina should turn out to be Ric and Sonny’s little sister. She should be Ric’s sister and Sonny’s half sister from their mother. I have always stated that they should try and make this happen. It would be awesome to find out that Ric has known this all this time and hide it from Sonny. Courtney never worked out so why not try it with Sabrina. Plus with the whole Ric and Julian union, Sonny would definitely have issues with Sabrina being on Ric’s and Carols’ side. Sonny is all about family, how would he feel with Sabrina not wanting to be part of his world, but agrees to be in Ric’s life?
Was anyone annoyed with today’s episode (friday) with Morgan ?? Or should I say RC ? Morgan barely knew that both Michael and his dumb ass are related to Luke !! Yet he acted like Luke is some distant relative. Did RC forget that Luke is Morgan & micaels mom’s uncle and their grandma Bobbie brother??? In conversation with Kiki he said if Luke married Tracy then he would be related by marriage to Luke (wtf) RC prides himself in knowing GH history yet this piece of info he had completely wrong. It was so annoying to see how that scene with Kiki played out.
Michael is already related to Luke both he Morgan n their mom are Spencer’s from their maternal side of the family !!!!
They hardly show Bobbie…i’d like to see her reaction to Luke’s odd behavior!!!
Some of us consider that a real blessing, jimh….besides given “Luke’s” pointed observations these days, it would be remiss if he didn’t (have a rude reaction of his own and) make a crack about “Barbara Jean’s” over-reliance on fillers and plastic surgery…….we both know that won’t be happening anytime soon!!!!!! Having said that, they could never get away with this “switcheroo?” caper if Laura, Ethan, Lucky, Holly or Scorpio were anywhere around now….while Tracy and the Ben-obsessed Lulu are blissfully ignorant to Spencer’s bizarre peculiarities and inconsistencies, these other characters would never be….even “Slim” should be having a “lightbulb” moment here soon…she definitely needs to cross paths with “Luke” again in the near future.
If the character she’s playing turns out to be TJ’s mom that could be a good story for the Shawn and TJ in a lot of ways.I could see Shawn been protective of TJ and not wanting him to be hurt by his mom. However if she’s not TJ’s mom then i think she’s someone from Shawn and/or TJ’s past.
She is beautiful. Maybe its me but if she turns out to be TJ’s mom, How old was she when she had him.5 ? I have comethisclose to not bothering to watch this mess lately TJ could certainly use his mom. Sean for a father turned into a joke. he is a mob hit man. can’t say killer for hire because he can’t seem to hit the barn never mind the broadside. Exciting for an actress I have never heard of or a character I probably won’t care about. bring back Tristan Rogers ,Genie Francis etc .that would be someone to get excited about.
isn’t Sean Donnely a bit old to be TJ’s father? Does that make his and Tiffany’s red-headed daughter Anna Donnely the half sister of TJ and cousin of Lucas Jerome?
not sean Donnally, sean Sonnys goon. He is TJ’s foster father. Of course this killer for hire has almost cost TJ his life..I shouldn’t be surprised Sonny has almost killed each of his kids, .
Well, Sean needs a girl friend, but he’s boring as dishwater.
The cast is already bloated, so maybe they could get rid of Sabrina, Felix, Brad, Dr O and quit with the stunt casting
Everything YOU said! And dump Kiki, Silas and Franko too.
Ditto! No more newbie please.
IA. It’s not that we can’t use newbies, but believable and talented. Hint: I want Debbie Morgan on here to play Sean’s sister! We can do without Felix, Sabrina, Silas, Kiki, Michael, Carly, Morgan, Julian, Carlos, Ava, Sam -she has no purpose now. But we do need diversity with talent on here.
I’m with you, Harry…except for the part about “Dr. O.” She’s a real keeper! And hard as it is to believe, Brad doesn’t even bother me so much anymore….getting him away from Felix and into “Lucasland” has done wonders for the character! Still want to see his family brought on in the forms of “Yank and Jade” from Asian Quarter days.
Its great to see diversity on this show. Any thoughts on who should play Nina? My heart says Susan Haskell but i doubt it :(( My next choice would be Tamara Braun or Michelle Staford or Elizabeth H. ( soon to be ex-Chloe, Y&R)
Gina Tognoni, Beth Chamberlain and Rebecca Buding are others id consider…Susan Haskel would be nice but i think Tamara Braun would be perfect!!!
Also, if Nina’s father is introduced: David Selby, George Hamilton, or William Devane; maybe Ron Raines or Jerry ver Dorn.
Also, i wonder if theyll somehow be related to the Cassidines…Madeline couldve been married or had an affair with Victor(making him Nina’s daddy)…then they wouldnt have to add someone else to play Nina’s father like the actors i suggested!!!
I think we’ve already seen “Nina”. That’s who Shirley Jones is really playing.
Being married to Silas can really age a girl!
Maybe she can become Patrick’s new love interest. Just because she’s African-American, doesn’t mean she has to be paired with Shawn.
sorry babe but did you forget what happened when they paired Alexis up with Shaun. Not going to happen. Molly and TJ work because they are still young. Older interracial relationships don’t bode well with older viewers.
No need for another NEW character. Focus on the ones we rarely see! Shawn is a cool dude but we dont care about his back story.
Thank you.
Same goes for Donna Mills??? Oh wait, she’s off limits.
In the closing credits, she was tagged as playing Jordan Ashford, so she’s most likely TJ’s mother.
Beautiful woman, let’s hope they give her a story line worth watching.
Another character who will take away from the core, legacy characters. Too many residents in Port Charles, as it is. A very pretty woman, though.
hmmmm TJ is “Tommy Junior” but no relation to Tom and Simone Hardy?
these writers really need to dig deeper when they name these new charatcters:
– John Zachara vs John McBain
– Olivia Falconeri vs Olivia Jerome
– Shawn Bultler vs Sean Donnely
– Tom Ashford Jr vs Tom Hardy
– James (Jimmy) Reeves vs Jimmy Lee Holt
I know it’s been 50 yrs or so but if the writing team is going to honor legacy characters, how about making references easier on the viewer?
thanks,
Signed:
NOT Mr Spencer.
I think the actress used to play Whitney on the soap Passions.
Pretty soon Julian and AJ will be dead. There room for the newbies. Scummy wins again. My give a damns busted this show can not entice me to watch anymore .
wow! a black family on GH!! Bout tine!!
Would it be fabulous if Jordan has another reason for staying in town and that is she is the so-called missing Quartermaine heir? I mean…they have been danging that tidbit for some time and what if…she’s one of the Ward’s?! That would make her and TJ a member of the clan! PLUS since they are either about to kill off AJ OR put him in a comatose situation that requires him to be airvac’d to Switzerland where all soap characters go in exile the Q clan could use more family members popping out of the woodwork! Plus she seems like she could hold her own against Tracy.
TOTALLY unnecessary….next! (Since we know there is always another newbie waiting in the wings…….)
We are waiting for Nina to show up…lol
At least she will have a purpose….we’re now so deep into the Silas backstory that Nina’s arrival will have a rhyme and reason, and I am expecting a seasoned soap professional to portray her. Although the word “newbie” is used as an umbrella term for any debuting actor or character, I rather reserve it as a dismissive/derisive label for the endless parade of useless, annoying characters/largely boring unknowns that “Cartini” keeps throwing our way, hoping against hope that they will stick by force-feeding them on us…you know, like Sobby, Felix, Taylor, Car-LOS!, Cardboard Cop, etc. I certainly don’t put veterans like Donna Mills, the Llanview Three, Ilene Kristen, or even any of the returning legacy GH-ers in that category, even if they all are not personal favorites of mine. It’s the unimaginative characters who are the true time and space wasters that earn my wrath as “newbies.” Most have been complete duds over the last year or so….with the grand exceptions of Britt and Dr. O.!!!!!!
By the way, does anyone else think that Nina actually died and is being kept on ice for Robin to revive??? Seems a very strange coincidence that she was supposedly in the same facility as Victor’s cryo-peeps, but was not actually seen alive, albeit in a vege-state. Perhaps she succumbed long ago and Madeline kept it a secret so Silas would not inherit his wife’s estate….and could Nina be a Cassadine, as well???? There has to be some link between Ms. Reeves and Victor given that the clinic seems to be groundzero for so much upcoming action.
We havent seen much of ‘Sobby’ as you call her most likely due to her real life pregnancy so your in luck…for now!!! And im certain Taylor is gone for good but i hope she gave T.J. an STD to pass to Molly(i dont mind teen storylines but those two bore me)…some of those other characters you mention the show really dont need!!!
Yes…it has been an ALMOST blessedly Sappy-free zone…wish it would be permanent!!! Also agree with you about the “consequences” of the Taylor/TJ hookup…LOL. (And about the boring coupling with Molly,,,,really don’t like her, period! She is just too chipper and whiny….) As for Britta and her Mutter, now THAT’S how one does new additions right! Particularly with Dr. O….we were introduced to her in dribs and drabs with small glimpses into her “world” until that magnificent “aha moment” when her place in the scheme of things all came together…of course the mega-talented Kathleen Gati’s superb command of her character certainly didn’t hurt either!!!! But that is an excellent example of launching a successful and beloved persona to an existing cast….by making people want more, not imposing unpolished, amateurish interlopers down the audiences’ throat via a daily barrage of scene-crashing.
But Britt and Mutter can stay for good!!! 4got to add that!!!
Yes She is beautiful. I have to say that purple dress she wore on May 8th was amazing. I have been binge watching GH as I was gone all summer and I have about 80 episodes to watch. Anyway, my daughter was in the Miss California pageant and is in love with this dress. If Miss Vinessa Antoine would tell us where this dress is from it would be greatly appreciated. I’m sure it is way out our price range but it’s fun to dream with my daughter. Thank you for your time & attention.
