Y&R Celebrates Its 45th Anniversary Today! EP Mal Young Teases: "We’ve Got Major Storylines Happening And Major Peaks Of What We Have Been Building Up To For Months"

By Michael Fairman

A big congratulations are in order to The Young and the Restless on this Monday, March 26th. For 45 years ago, CBS broadcast the first episode of this juggernaut daytime drama hit series that since 1989 has been the number-one rated soap of them all!

This week, Y&R has plenty in store for fans of the residents of Genoa City with major storyline bombshells and revelations planned after last Friday’s multi-story cliffhanger.

In a videotaped message posted on social media Sunday, Y&R executive producer, Mal Young shared: “This is a huge moment and honor for me, personally. To have the responsibility of overseeing the celebrations for the 45th anniversary of Y&R.  The anniversary is on a Monday, but actually it’s all about these five episodes and events that are going to unfold across the five episodes that are going to change lives forever.

We’ve got major storylines happening and major peaks of what we have been building up to for months.  So it was important that some of those people came from like Mac (Kelly Kruger) who would actually play into current storylines.

It’s been like a real reunion this week, while we’ve been filming everything.  It’s been a joy for everyone, simply meeting each other, after not seeing each other for years. The atmosphere had been exciting an emotional, and I think we’ve got something truly exciting and special for the fans.”

So get ready for the celebration of Y&R 45! It all kicks-off today! Share your congratulations to the cast, crew, behind the scenes personnel on this achievement, and a special shout out to you, the fans, that have continued to enjoy and have been invested in the show for over 4-plus decades.  Comment below!

Bring back Adam Newman.

Amen sister!

I’m not feeling it if it turns out Jack is not an Abbott. Maybe Eric Forrester is his father.

hi Mo..
Jack Abbott is a cornerstone of Y&R as is Victor..
That will never change..

There is no Y&R worth much of anything without the two powers; Victor and Jack.

Jack is John’s son… that is Y&R ..

imo- it will be a story to have Jack feel what Ashley felt/feels knowing she’s not an Abbott.
Most likely the story will be the bringing together of Jack and Ashley.

Jack Abbott and Victor Newman will always be.

It will be a very good story!!! The journey of Jack finding himself ..
Perhaps another visit from John..

It is a huge mistake rewriting history I wish they had never bought Dina back and guess what my sis tells everybody she wrote the novel Gone With The Wind does that make it true???? Get your shovel ready let’s bury the soap

I loved this show but taking it and making everybody act like a I pod from the body snachters is too much! They will do fine after this week because I do enjoy seeing the oldies I am soap free!

At least your sis has excellent taste in her choice of authorship, k/kay!

People don’t seem to understand that it’s likely Dina’s own mind manipulating her.

i’m watching just this weeks epi : for the 45th. oh wow… like I needed convincing in Marla Adams… as Dina.

” I don’t want any DAMN tea, I want to leave right now, you are so impertinent, you should be fired, johns going to know about this”

ALL the trappings that scare the bejeezus out of any one.

this rocks to the core… you can’t even grasp at any thing. the finality

kudos, salute… on the excellence of Marla Adams. how does it get any better

ie: your post… which explains … why – Dina would “make-up” ANOTHER scenario … with another of her children… that being Jack.

that is tantamount to may as well blow this show up. as @suOOOO said.. you can’t just have two gladiators… without the other. Jack ABBOTT and Victor NEWMAN.

since she grappled and fought for a lifetime.. Ashley parentage.

anyway… theres no way around this… as was said @GH Mike story. just hearing the word , scares . for drama sake… Y&R and GH are to be lauded for SHARING what is more common than any one wants

I don’t think this latest “revelation” will lead anywhere. I think Dina is confusing her memories (hopefully).

I have to say Days is on fire and i feel Ron Calivati is the force that has made the other shows stand up and compete! That said, Young and Restless was brilliant this week. Whether people are not on board with the actions of JT the scenes between him and Amelia Heinle were amazing T he week was one minute a gasp than breathe in than a gasp Peter Bergman Marla Adams Eileen Davidson brilliant!!! Nick and Sharon finally!!!!!!1 All around major points !

I agree with you rpm re: Y&R, so far this past week was when Mal made an impression on me…I hope he keeps it up for I am looking forward to see how this all turns out…

just watched there return today in canada,,,wont give anything away,,but pure brilliance how they connected to a now character that shares a lot of hystory with the whole brooks family,,o,k a lil hint mommie dearest,,,
just fabulous seeing janice lynde and jamie lyn bauer on screen again,,
its funny but so many writers over the years have tried there best to create new characters for genoa city and only a few have been a hit,,,
mal young wake up dont make this just an anniversary visit ,make it a permanent stay and bring back some nostalgia and hystory to this show,,,ive never understood writers not getting it,,no one loves more then to sit with friends and reminice about the good ole days,,its no different in genoa city,,,it doesnt take a genious writers so next time you are trying to think up a new character for the show just look into the rich hystories of the past,,,dont tell us old characters have know place in the present stories,,,this lil come back just proved that wrong..

GOOD POINT rand spring and I agree with you 100%…I have yet to watch todays episode which I am looking forward too but especially tomorrows with Jaime and Janice and THANKS randy for not giving it away…CANNOT WAIT.

I gotta mansion;
For the 1st time– Y&R has more action and intruge than GH .,

GH was once the king of adventure, action, hard drama and intruge now it is Dull, Stale, BLAH, and that is sad, a shame 🙁 GH has lost itself ..

WTG! Y&R– Mal is bringing it home!

edit –
I gotta mansion to- I gotta Mention .

I couldn’t have said it better myself!! The actors are also bringing it home. Everyone is turning out one excellent performance after the next. All I can say is more more more. Bring it on, I’m ready! !! Happy viewing and thanks for listening

I agree su, usually I turn on GH first but Y&R has shifted gears and I love it!

No, SuzieQ…not the first time. That’s impossible, LOL.
How long have you been watching Y&R? I LOVE THIS SHOW, come hell or high water!!
Perhaps if GH got rid of Sonny, Carly, Michael, Sam, Aunt Stella ( suddenly she has a degree in Social Senior Services? For someone who ‘deals’ with human sense and sensibility and emotions, she is presented as a harsh hussy), Dr. Borscht?, and Bobbi, the show would be more palatable…..But you like Sonny, yes?

I don’t get it, Celia. While others languish, Sonny and Carly (and her clomping size 19s) each now have a big storyline AGAIN. if I have to watch her salivating over Drew and Sam’s breakup, I may SERIOUSLY consider making a Carly voodoo doll (just a too-tight mini-dress, some straw for hair, and regular adult shoes 10 sizes too big oughta do it), then we’ll see who’s cackling away!

Well, that would be a good start, CeeCeeGirl! Especially the supercilious Aunt Stella and creepy Dr. Bensch, who is looking to be the lecher we believed him to be from the very beginning. The problem with GH is that there are so many unpalatable characters that getting rid of just one or two will not be sufficent to the purpose of getting this soap back on track. It really does require deep culling of the herd…..

Celia…about Aunt Stella…girl, as always, you are SO RIGHT ON!!!!! GH suddenly making Stella a social worker…I cannot help but LMAO on that one!!!!! This makes me like Aunt Stella EVEN LESS!!!!! Trips to a local car wash last A LOT LONGER than that…lol.

Have a good night, my friend.

Later.

@Soaphound.
Oh, my gosh, Soaphound….you’re the best. It’s remarks like these ( as Harry, Shay, Timmm, Jimh, Alan, su, and others—not necessarily in that order, LOL) that make these sites magnetic…keep coming back for more. LOL and beyond, my friend.
Oh, yeah…..I didn’t know there was a size 19…..laughing as I write. My husband is size 12-13( and I thought that was huge)….I, a mere 5-51/2…..
Clomp, clomp, clomp. Your exaggeration hits the spot.
I do not know why this couple is soooo venerated…..why not, eh? They’re soooo supreme, afterall…..

Congrats to your 45 years have forgotten a lot of the stories wish you the best in the future!!!

” M – I – C – H – A – E – L M – U – H – N – E – Y ”

Adam

YOU SAID IT! THAT IS THE ONE THAT WOULD GET THE SOAP HITTING THE ROOF!

From your post to the soap gods’ ears, Patrick. Oh, how I long to see that man in that lavender shirt with that hair brushed back, and that devious grin he would sport…

See Hallmark Channel’s Home and Family tv show on Thurs this week for the Y&R cast. Reruns on Fri. Check your listings.

el
Su i think Shelly Altman would be a great co head writer for YR. Altman is one of the best in biz

She already wrote for “Y & R” during the Jill Farren Phelps regime – she came on board with Jean Passanante after Josh Griffith was let go.

The rest of this week’s shows had better be good. I was underwhelmed by Monday’s show. I had high expectations and needless to say, was let down big time.

I so agree with you Michael about Monday’s episode…

Love it I would love to see M M back as Adam ,other then that it’s great ,

Jill being Catherine’s daughter bombed so badly, they had to make her Lorren’s sister… Can’t keep track of who is Christian’s father, or was it Summer’s father? Or who is Lilly’s father… and now they are going to make Jack and Victor brothers… bad move, serves no purpose. The writers bombs with this one too.

Victor’s father was played by the late, great George Kennedy. I didn’t think the character was from Genoa City.

Who is Jack Abbott? IF he’s not John’s biological son, I’d go for Neil Fenmore! Wouldn’t that be a great twist. Hate the idea of changing history, though.

Then he would have slept with his half-sister. No thanks!

Keep him as John’s son. Why mess with history? Serves no purpose and ruins a lot of things. It was bad enough they made Ashley the result of an affair. Leave Jack’s paternity alone.

I’m LOATHING the notion that Jack may not be John’s son. If the plot plays out in that direction, I think it was a TERRIBLE idea.

A decade ago, the writers RUINED Jill when they tinkered with her lineage: First, writing her as Kay’s daughter and then revisiting the sad tale to make her Lauren’s sister. It made absolutely no sense. Based on their interactions for over 20 years, there was no way that anyone would believe that Liz Foster was not Jill’s mother. They further insulted us with the idea that Jill was the daughter of Neil Fenmore (who was about the SAME AGE as Jill when he was on the show!!). Poor Jill and Kay never recovered from that disaster.

You would think that Mal Young would have learned something from that: Leave the established history of the characters alone!!!! What exactly will the writers do with Jack if he is not John’s son? For the (nearly) 40 decades the character has been on the show, he has always been defined by his family —- his love for his father. Jack’s lineage IS the character. An Abbott-less Jack would just like Jill has been for the past decade — A character wounded by ill-advised plots who becomes a far less interesting character to watch.

Personally, if I was going to “re-write” history and a character’s lineage, I would hit up Nikki. She must have barely known her mother and her father tried to sleep with her. I’ve always thought that it would be very believable that Nikki was the child Kay gave up for adoption —- They both were blonde and addiction issues. They also got along very well. (I even remember several times where Kay remarked to someone that “Nikki was like a daughter to her.” — which could effectively be used in flashbacks). Sister Casey could reveal to Nikki that she was adopted, explaining that this may be why daddy Nick Reid tried to sleep with Nikki but never with Casey as Nikki wasn’t his child. This would be a way to “revive” the importance of Kay to the show, cause major conflict between Nikki and Jill, and financially would put Nikki on par with Victor — causing problems between them as Nikki would not be dependent on him for $$$.

I’ve had a LOT of issues with writing on Y&R for the past decade. Frankly, the quality of a LOT of it has been unacceptable. However, I’ve watched the show since the first day and have been reluctant to abandon it. That being said, if the writers actually follow through with this “Jack isn’t John’s son” business, I’m seriously thinking about ditching the show. I suffered through this treatment for Jill; I’m not foolish enough to watch it happen with Jack.

Jack will forever be John’s son…
Y&R would never ever make Jack not John’s son. no more than Y&R would make Victor a Jocky .

Jack and Victor are forever characters..

The story will drag us threws the muk but endgame; Jack is John’s son..

I hope that you are correct.

However, someone could have said something similar about Jill and Kay —- “Y&R would never make Jill Kay’s daughter. Jill is clearly a Foster.” We saw first hand how that turned out.

I would have more confidence in things if the show had not suffered from a “revolving door” of producers and writers over the past decade. With the exception of Sally Sussman and Kay Alden (I’m big fans of both), none of the others seemed to have bothered to learn the history of the show or (in the case of Maria Arena Bell) had no idea what they were doing.

Veteran Y&R viewers have been put through the “mill” by the writers over the past decade. It has been brutal. While I certainly hope the current ones have enough sense to leave Jack as an Abbott, I can’t say with confidence that they will be that bright based on the sub-par plots (and unnecessary history re-writes) we’ve seen in the past decade.

Hi Barbara,

A well-written and beautifully detailed look at the history of Y and R! I am in your camp: keep Jack Abbott a true Abbott. IT was a horrible mistake to make Jill Foster somebody other than Liz Foster’s daughter. Same would hold true here for Jack.

On that note, as much as I hated seeing John Abbott killed off, I’d sure like to have Jack hallucinate again so we can see John now and then.

I was really small when Y and R debuted, watching it with my mom (saw it the first time when I was home from school with a cold!) and, although I didn’t know what soaps were really all about, I knew I was captivated by the show’s ambiance.

We have seen just about everything on this show, especially the highs and lows of storytelling. You wouldn’t be foolish if you watched what will happen to Jack. YOU ARE AN AUTHORITY on the true history of this show and your reminders will always keep things straight for the younger viewers so they know what really happened. Don’t give up on our beloved show!

Barbara from Atlanta…you couldn’t have said it better and I have already been thinking of quit watching but the last 3 days of last week were excellent but I feel this week has been lackluster and if the Brook sister’s aren’t on more than this past Tuesday then IMO that would be an insult to Jaime Lyn and Janice to come back for that little bit of scene and what a waste of their time…I totally agree with what you said about the writing since 2006 and I had high hopes with Sally and Kay and poof they were gone…

Didn’t like how Chelsea was written into a bad person by everyone, don’t like it that suddenly JT is an abuser and especially won’t like it if Jack is not an Abbott. Stop messing with well established characters and then turning them into something they haven’t been in all the years we watched.

I record. Kind of afraid to look forward after reading these comments. Jack is John’s son. Some foundation is important and should not be compromised too often.

Should Victor or Jack pass away: then writer’s, please keep us!

Guess I had better watch!

Who is the blonde woman and the baby they showed in flashbacks yesterday (Thursday) with JT?

Christel Khalil Reveals She Almost Quit Acting After ‘That’s So Raven’ Audition, But Then Came ‘The Young and the Restless’

The Young and the Restless fan favorite, Christel Khalil (Lily Winters) is the special guest on this week’s edition of Soapy Hosted by Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart which dropped today on Tuesday, June 23rd.

During the interview with Rebecca and Greg, Khalil who had played Lily Winters on-screen since August of 2002, nearly 24 years with the CBS soap, shared how early on her teenage acting career, she was ready to call it quits in show business, after a heartbreaking audition for the lead of a new Disney Channel sitcom, which later turned out to be the hit seres, That’s So Raven, starring Raven-Symoné which ran for four seasons from 2003-2007.

Christel recalled what happened. “I was 14 and I had always auditioned for all these Disney projects. So I auditioned for That’s So Raven, it was between me and Raven-Symoné and it was called at the time Absolutely Psychic,” explained Khalil. “The character was this girl who had psychic ability, but then when Raven got the role, they named the title of the show after her.”

HOW A BROTHERLY TALK CHANGED THE COURSE OF CHRISTEL’S CAREER

Reliving the disappointment to Greg and Rebecca, Christel explained, “I lost that part and I was just so devastated, because for the network call there were 20 people in the room watching me, and I just have always had such performance anxiety. I just completely bombed the audition and it was terrible. So, I was just devastated. I was actually going to quit acting and then I got the final call for The Young and The Restless and I wasn’t going to go.”

It was Khalil’s brother, who actually got her to reconsider, and if he hadn’t, we would not have our Lily Winters in Genoa City! Christel recounted, “I was like, ‘You know what? I’m done. I don’t want to do this anymore. I’m just going to hang out with my friends.’ I was just devastated. My brother, who is seven years older than me, and he had quit acting at the same age that I was at that time. He said to me, ‘I promise you, I actually really regret quitting. Just go on this audition and if you don’t get it, you can quit.'”

Christel’s screen-test for the role of Lily was actually with the late, great, Kristoff St. John who would play her father Neil (Later it was revealed to Lily, that Neil’s brother, Malcolm Winters was her bio-dad).

Photo: CBS

ACTING WAS EASY WITH THE LATE KRISTOFF ST. JOHN

“So, I went (to test for Lily) and I remember the screen-test was with Kristoff St. John. It was just so easy to act with him because he’s just so there. I remember just being on set, and that was my first time there for a screen-test where you were actually on set. I had never experienced that before. It was my first time being with an actor and  having makeup done, which just helps you really be able to do your best work.”

Recalling the screen-test with the St. John, Khalil, “It was where I had to be emotional ( in the scene) and I always had issues being emotional at auditions. But I was there with him, it just came, and it happened. It was natural and I felt so good and it was amazing. It stands out in my mind a lot.”

You can check out the full Soapy conversation with Christel Khalil where she also discusses juggling motherhood, marital life, and the demands of soap operas.

Fan can listen to weekly episodes of Soapy on Audacy or wherever podcasts are available, and can watch full video episodes weekly on the CBS =Brand YouTube Channel. Whether a lifelong fan or discovering the genre for the first time, SOAPY offers a fresh, fun behind-the-scenes look at the stories – and storytellers – that define daytime drama.

Now let us know, over the years what had been your favorite Lily Winters story on Y&R as played by Christel Khalil? What did you think of of Christell’s recollection where she was up for the lead of “That’s So Raven” as a teenager, before it was even titled that? Let us know via the comment section.

Deidre Hall Marks 50 Years as ‘Days of Our Lives’ Dr. Marlena Evans

Published

By

If you have ever tuned-in to the soap opera genre over the last 50 years, and witnessed some of the greatest romances, drama, classic and outlandish storylines of all-time, you would have seen Deidre Hall smack dab in the middle of it as longtime Salem heroine, Dr. Marlena Evans.

It was 50 years on this date, June 21, 1976 that Hall first appeared on DAYS on NBC which was its home for 57 years before it moved to its current streaming platform on Peacock in September of 2022.

In Hall’s first episode she was introduced as a psychiatrist treating Mickey Horton (John Clarke) at Bayview Sanitarium after he suffered a complete mental breakdown. Mickey learned that his brother Bill Horton (Edward Mallory) was the biological son of Mike Horton (Wesley Eure) with his wife Laura (Susan Flannery) and that he had been lied to for years and years. From that moment on, the rest is television and soap opera history. Days of Our Lives put Hall front and center.

Photo: NBC

There were so many heartbreaking and shocking story twists involving the beloved Marlena. One of the first was the historic crib death of baby DJ (Don Jr.) in 1980, Marlena’s infant son with Don Craig (Jed Allan). The story had never been told on daytime television and Hall’s performances received accolades from TV critics to fans when Deidre received thousands of letters from grieving mothers who had gone through the same thing in their own lives.

DAYS also brought Deidre’s twin sister, Andrea Hall Lovell to the show as her on-screen sister Samantha, who had a grudge and even locked Marlena up in a sanitarium and took her place! Fast-forward and in 1982, DAYS launched the Salem Strangler story where everyone believed Marlena was his next victim, only it turned out to be Samatha. Jake Kositchek (played by Jack Coleman) was revealed to be the actual serial killer.

Later, Deidre would assume the role of Marlena’s look-alike, Hattie Adams in 2004, once played by her sister, Andrea. Over the years, Hattie has come back to Salem and caused trouble giving Hall a chance to play a different type of character, then the always upstanding Marlena.

THE LOVES OF MARLENA

Deidre Hall struck gold with all her leading men: from the late Jed Allan, to Wayne Northrop as Roman Brady, and of course, her enduring love story with the late John Black played by the iconic Drake Hogestyn. In fact, Marlena’s 1986 wedding to John (who was believed to be Roman at the time) remains a favorite of fans to this day.

TOP MARLENA STORYLINES OF ALL-TIME

While the list is long, here are several that were some of the memorable during Deidre’s five decades in Salem!

The Possession (1994- 1995)
Considered one of the most ambiguous, outlandish and unforgettable story arcs in soap opera history, then Days of Our Lives head writer, James Reilly went there! Marlena was possessed by the devil! That included; the demonic eyes, hissing at father John (Black) the priest, morphing into creatures, and the classic levitating in her bed! It became a cultural phenomenon and cemented Deidre Hall’s status as a daytime television legend. Just ask Ryan Gosling!

Photo:JPI

The Affair with John Black (1993)
John and Marlena’s forbidden love could not be denied and they had passionate affair, while she was still married to the real Roman. Problem was her daughter, Sami (Alison Sweeney) caught her mother having sex with John on a desk that changed Sami forever.

The Salem Stalker Mystery (2003-2004)
In a shocker, Marlena was revealed to be a serial killer who bumped off several Salem favorites residents who were all alive on the island of Melaswen (spelled “New Salem” backward). Turns out, she was manipulated and gaslighted by Andre DiMera (Thaao Penghlis) to do the “killings” and had no memory of her actions.

The Pier Scene (1991)
This remains Michael Fairman TV’s all-time favorite Deidre Hall moment, which featured some of the best acting in the storied careers of both Hall and Drake Hogestyn.

In the story, a presumed-dead Marlena returns after four years. One foggy night on the pier, John is alone, and Marlena steps out of the fog to reveal herself, and is reunited with the love of her life. You can watch it any year, any decade, and in any moment, and it will have you reaching for the hankies again and again. (best music score fo a soap scene of all-time too!)

Photo: NBC

Kristen’s Secret Room Reveal (1997)
Marlena was caught in Kristen Blake’s (Eileen Davidson) elaborate web of lies, when she was held hostage in a secret wine cellar/room until John managed to track her down, leading to an iconic on-screen reunion. The classic catfight between Hall and Eileen Davidson was one for the ages.

It should be noted that Maison Blanche, Queen of the Night, Possession, Aremid and Lady in a Cage were all a part of classic DAYS storyline and all featured Hall at the epicenter of it from 1993-1996.

THE RECENT YEARS OF MARLENA

In recent years, DAYS brought back the possession 2.0 storyline under then head writer Ron Carlivati in 2021 where the devil leapt back in Marlena after taking advantage of a frail Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes)

In 2025, viewers watched the end of the love story of John and Marlena, as John succumbed to injuries sustained in an explosion saving a vial of medication needed to bring Bo (Peter Reckell) back to life. Marlena has been a widow on-screen since June of 2025 as Hall as portrayed the good doctor struggling with her grief and to move on with her life since his death.

Photo: JPI

One story that never goes away is Stefano DiMera’s (the late Joe Mascolo) obsession with Marlena, his “Queen of the Night.” Even in death, Stefano is toying with her from the great beyond with the mysterious chess set and the missing “pawn,” that he had gifted John and Marlena in his will. The mystery is currently unfolding on all-new episodes of Days of Our Lives.

Tune-in to Days of our Lives on the Monday, June 22 episode as Marlena looks back at her 50 years in Salem.

Share your congratulations to Deidre Hall for this incredible 50-year milestone as Dr. Marlena Evans on Days of Our Lives in the comment section. Then let us know, what is your all-time favorite storyline or moment in the life of Marlena over the past 5 decades? And, just for kicks, and to celebrate this amazing milestone, here is Marlena levitating below circa Christmas Eve 1994.
