Y&R’s Zach Tinker Cast as Sonny Kiriakis in ‘Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem’ Limited-Series on Peacock

Photo: JPI

More casting and characters was announced on Monday for the upcoming limited-series Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem.  The series will run on NBCUniversal’s streaming service, Peacock.

The Young and the Restless Fenmore Baldwin, Zach Tinker, has replaced Freddie Smith for the series in the role of Sonny Kiriakis.

He will join Chandler Massey (Will Horton) and the return of Greg Rikaart as Leo Stark.

The casting change to Tinker came a week after the Daytime Emmy-winning Smith revealed that if asked, he wouldn’t return to DAYS as Sonny.

Beyond Salem is set to be a five-part episode streaming event.

So, what do you think of Zach replacing Freddie as Sonny for the upcoming limited series? Comment below.

No disrespect to talented, handsome Freddie Smith, but I’m liking this. I liked Zach as Fen in his brief run on YR. So, depending on his chemistry with Chandler, this could be another good pairing. And it’ll be a hoot to see Greg Rikaart reprise his role as the nasty but sexy Leo. Though, and it’s a BIG though, I STILL don’t understand why Will & Sonny were written out on DOOL. It’s one of those mysteries we’ll probably never have the honest answer to.

The reason is right here in this recast. To get you used to another Sonny. Someone Ron Carlivati feels more “comfortable” writing for; to put it nicely. Now they’ll return again this upcoming season. Watch.

Great to see Zach back on daytime! Seems like a busy roster of characters for just a 5 run episode series! But maybe it means he can transition over to the regular series like Shawn and Belle? I can really see him and Justin as father and son! … Ideally/ hopefully he can come back to Y n r as Fenn, especially now that Kyles leaving there will be a young lead void to fill! I can see Sally try to dig her claws into him especially since shes friends with his mom ,Lauren. Time to bring back the Baldwin… Read more »

I’m excited that Days is opting to continue story for Will and Sonny, and I’m ecstatic that the show recast Sonny. Freddie Smith will always be remembered as Sonny, but he’s living in Florida with his new wife and moving in a new direction with his career. Maybe, he’ll return one day, but I welcome Zach Tinker and am super excited for the return of Will and Sonny. Luckily, Chandler Massey is open and receptive to return for this particular gig. Time will tell… if this supercouple makes it back to Days, itself. Thanks to Days for recasting the role,… Read more »

Y&R doesn’t air in Hell, so I’m not familiar with this actor or his work. He certainly looks the part, so I’ll give him a shot. The Will recast was so horrible that I didn’t mind all that much when Ben killed him! Fortunately, they corrected that situation by bringing the real Will back. Not sure what the deal is with Freddie Smith, who now seems to be talking like James Scott in the “no way, not now, not ever, when Hell freezes over” when it comes to a return to Days. It’s a damned shame that this regime wrote… Read more »

I don’t think his decision is about Days; Freddie Smith and his wife moved to Florida. She’s all excited about her new job as a real estate agent and looks like he might want to become one, too. Or may get into buying an selling; flipping houses. They want to start a family and he said he wants to prepare for his future and be closer to his and her family who are in Florida…that they’d always been planning the move there.

Not a good time to relocate to Florida. There’s an idiot governor trying to kill off the entire state. Also, due to climate change…. probably not the best state to go into the real estate business. There’s a term in the housing industry called “underwater” if you can’t keep up with mortgage payments, but in Florida, it’s more literal than that. The whole state will actually be underwater before too long.

I agree, Satan. My heart goes out to those citizens. It’s really scary when lies replace truth, not to mention common sense. I don’t mind nutty plots and actions on soap operas but not in real life.

Freddie had hoped to do one more year with Days before moving, but had always planned to move to Florida. Then he and Chandler were fired, and the Pandemic hit. So he and Alyssa moved up their plans to relocate to Florida to be closer to both Families, they got married, and now want to start a Family. His wife recently got a Realtors License in Florida, and they both continue to produce weekly Podcasts from their home studio. In other words, he and Alyssa are building a new life in Florida and Freddie has chosen a career path that… Read more »

Roark Critchlow on His Return to DAYS and Working With Cady McClain

It’s been 12 years since Roark Critchlow appeared on Days of our Lives as Dr. Mike Horton, the brother of Jennifer Horton Deveraux (Cady McClain). However, fans have been excited to see him back on their screens when the series teased his appearance in the extended fall preview.

Now with Jennifer spiraling downward (now that her pill-popping addiction is back), it seems like a good time for Dr. Mike to return to Salem to help his sis. (And if the promo for this week’s DAYS is any indication, it certainly looks like Jennifer is going to be involved in a car crash and need medical assistance or at least some brotherly love.)

Photo: JPI

Roark initially appeared as Mike back in 1994 and left the soap back in 1999. He returned in 2010 for a few episodes honoring the late Frances Reid (Alice Horton) who was Mike’s grandmother.

In an interview about his return with Soap Opera Digest on newsstands now, Roark talks about working with McClain as Jennifer, when he previously worked with Missy Reeves in the part.

Critchlow expressed on sharing scenes with McClain: “Her character is going through a lot. She and I dropped in really easily, I felt. It was a very nice, natural care for each other. It wasn’t difficult, that’s for sure. Obviously, Missy is a super-duper person. But you don’t compare people. Cady and I chatted. We got on good. In terms of story, I thought we pulled it off nicely as being people who’ve known each other their whole lives.”

Look for Roark to make his DAYS re-emergence on the upcoming October 3rd episode of the Peacock streaming series.

So, looking forward to seeing Roark and Cady sharing scenes together? Share your thoughts in the comment section, but first check out this week’s promo for DAYS below.

‘NBC News Daily’ Hits Rock Bottom In Ratings Premiere Week

While networks have seen a collective erosion over the years of the soap opera viewing audience, they are still the most loyal and fierce of any entertainment genre.

With NBC’s decision to take Days of our Lives off of the network after nearly 57 years, and replace it with another daytime news program, they would surely have a rocky road ahead of them to capture viewers in that time slot; especially now that DAYS was moved exclusively to NBCUniversal’s streaming platform, Peacock.

Nothing was more proof positive of that, than the first week ratings and performance of NBC News Daily.

The news show which premiered on Monday, September 12th came in last for the ratings period of all daytime shows for the week.

According to SON: NBC News Daily averaged 935,000 viewers, was last among Total Viewers and last in the key demo ratings: Women 18-49 (tie) and Women 25-54.

In comparison to DAYS last week on NBC, and a year ago, NBC News Daily was down -744,000 and -762,000 viewers, respectively.

NBC News Daily features the latest national and international news, plus consumer, health, and personal finance segments and is hosted by Kate Snow, Aaron Gilchrist, Morgan Redford and Vicky Nguyen.

So, will ‘NBC News Daily’ find itself facing the same fate as ABC’s defunct ‘Revolution’, which replaced One Life to Live, and lasted only six months, or will the news program somehow turn a ratings corner? Does NBC really care one way or the other? Share your thoughts below.

Alison Sweeney Signs New Multi-Picture Overall Deal with Hallmark

Days of our Lives favorite, Alison Sweeney (Sami Brady) has signed a multi-picture overall  deal with the Hallmark Media.

According to Deadline, as part of Sweeney’s new deal she will star and executive produce A Magical Christmas Village with also stars Luke McFarlane and Marlo Thomas.  The movie will premiere later this year during the Hallmark Channel’s Countdown to Christmas.

In story, Sweeney plays Summer, an architect living in a small town where she’s raising her young daughter Chloe. When her mother Vivian (Thomas) finds herself in need of a place to live, her orderly life becomes a little less so after inviting Vivian to move in with them during this transition. Upon arrival, Vivian sets up an heirloom, miniature Christmas village resembling their town, and tells Chloe it grants Christmas wishes. As Chloe begins setting up the figurines, real-life events seem to mimic the scenes she creates, including Summer’s chance meeting with Ryan (Macfarlane), a newcomer to their community.

In a statement on inking the pact with Hallmark Media, Sweeney shared: “I am thrilled to continue to work with Hallmark as they continue to support my work as an actress and as a producer. I’m very proud of our Christmas movie and excited for the future projects to come!”

Lisa Hamilton Daly, Executive Vice President, Programming, Hallmark Media, added:  “Alison Sweeney has been an incredible creative partner for us over the years – both on screen as well as behind the camera as a producer. She’s long been a fan favorite and we can’t wait to continue our work together as we bring new stories to life.”

Sweeney has been making story arc visits to Days of our Lives in recent years.  No word if she will be making a return to the series now that its permanently on Peacock.

So, will you be checking out Alison’s new movie when it comes out in time for holiday season? Comment below.
