RATINGS: GH Only Soap To Show Gains! DAYS Hits New Lows in Key Female Demo!

courtesy/ABC

The ratings are out for the week of July 9-13th and there was some good news to report for General Hospital!  The lone ABC soap was the only daytime drama to add total viewers for the week adding +76,000 eyeballs.

However, Days of our Lives did not have a good week.  Not only did it lose the most viewers -176,000 of all the network soaps, but it hit all-time lows in the key women 18-49 demo in both total viewers and ratings share.  The Olympics can not come too soon for the NBC sudser, and with the big cliffhanger, some time off, and the episodes from new head writers, Gary Tomlin and Chris Whitesell about to take front and center stage, the soap is hoping for a boost come mid-August.

The CBS soaps; the number one The Young and the Restless, and the number two, The Bold and the Beautiful also dipped in viewers, but remained steady in their slots.  You can view all the ratings via Soap Opera Network here!Time to play armchair programming exec quarterback, soapers!  Tell us what it is working on your favorite soaps and what is not.   What would you change, and what would you do to increase the ratings for all four shows?

I hope the DAYSaster story brings and keeps new viewers. As a longtime viewer, I am holding out hope that the writers restore a little bit of balance to the show. It’s been heavy with a select few characters for awhile now, and although I know we fans all have our favorites that we’d like to see everyday (mine being John and Marlena), I think variety and balance might help retain viewership.

If TIIC had left OLTL alone, they would be doing great right now. OLTL was their top-rated soap. Dumb move, ABC.

Miss OLTL!

Yes OLTL is sorely missed!!!!

I miss OLTL a lot also!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wiil always miss oltl and amc!!

Cry when they Todd talks about his family on GH. Miss OLTL so darn much.

Dear Paul (lee)

you don’t get it. We still want our OLTL back. Get working on a good plan to give us what we want once ABC gets the rights back.

or take your stinky self back to the UK.

te he he

first i want to say i watch all four remaining soaps – the story line i am must disgusted with is the awful triangle between steffy/liam/hope on b&b – it has just been going on forever & it is so tired & boring……………..
i have watched gh since 1963 & i am so glad it is doing so well…….i really want to see gh be the #1 soap!

What about OLTL did you like this soap also???? This was my #1 soap & still is…Gh is my 2nd favorite soap………….

I really hope GH succeds and stay’s on abc for more than one year……I really mean this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oltl was my all time favorite soap – i started watching when erika slezak first started on oltl in 1971 & i truley miss oltl!

GH HAS been working out okay for me lately. Anna as the new PCPD commissioner is working out great. Significantly brought up the IQ factor of the office. Patrick’s struggle with addiction is riveting. As well as the unlikely aspect of Lulu helping him as a friend who had experience dealing with a loved one in the same trap. Love her new maturity and real portrayal of a marriage by her and Dante. Another of my favorite characters. Loved GH pairing him & Anna as cool investigators. Loved Luke showing more care for his cupcake as a father. I liked Jasam until the freaking where’s-the-baby SL. The length of time its taking for that makes my eyebrows twitch in annoyance. But gotta say Todd Manning is a howl factor that I really enjoy. Also NOT working for me is the amount/type of things Mad Hatter Heather is allowed to get awaywith. Stretches the belief factor. Todd should be picking his teeth with herfor crissakes. So far Michael and Starr are okay.

I am really liking the crazy Heather..I hope they keep her on for awhile. .I am afraid she will be gone soon.. I hope not!! Now there is going to be another mystery with Patrick finding his wife.. Loved the clue… good surprise for the viewers.. …

Days will have one last chance with these new writers.. or I am out.. My time is not worth this soap and I need to find better use with my time than to watch the poor writing… I understand why they are losing viewers..maybe revolution could be picked up on NBC in the Days time slot… 25 years of watching Days.. might be time for something else

Ron Calivati and rFrank Valentini are what’s working!!

Too bad they couldn’t keep OLTL working TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YEAH GH! I’m currently enjoying all 4 daytime dramas, so I’m not sure why the numbers are down. Perhaps the holiday? Anyway, GO SOAPS!

You should share with us, fans, from a fan perspective…. since, you watch all 4 dramas… what your ratings would be like.

i’m able to watch, DAYS & GH…. I left Y&R about 2 years ago… and surprisingly, i don’t miss Y&R. I champion for DAYS. couldn’t not watch my favorite DOOL. as for B&B… I think in my mind… that 1/2 hour went by too fast. how i kept up with all, was by reading the soap digest mag… at the grocery and local drug stores.

i’ve posted before… mine, would be 1. GH
2. DAYS
3. B&B
5.Y&R

My ranking would be
1. GH
2. DOOL
3. YR
4. BB

I only started watching B&B after OLTL was cancelled. It took awhile for me to get into it because I think it skews a little young for me. They harped on the Hope/Liam/Steffi triangle too much, but I’m starting to enjoy it more now. Y&R was a real snoozefest for awhile, but it’s picked up again in the last few weeks. I think DOOL has been really good lately, but GH is my fave.

Excellent for General Hospital my fave (and only daytime) show. The creativity of the off camera crew is showing through to the actors and their characters. Love the chances the writers are taking.

On General Hospital… More vets FRONT AND CENTER in the storylines…we want to see GH characters that we care about and have invested time in. Also very important is honoring the history of those legacy characters. We’ve been watching for years, you can’t fool us with bogus history and characters that don’t resemble the ones we know and love. If that is done, we may be more likely to accept OLTL/new characters and watch on a daily basis. Finally, BRING BACK ROBERT SCORPIO and reunite him with Anna and Robin. Honor his character and the history between them all. NO GUZA SCORPIOS! I’d also love to have Frisco return…and Sean Donely while you’re at it! Finally…I want to escape when I watch GH. Bring back love and romance. BTW…I am in a key demographic. I started watching when I was 10. FV and RC…are you listening??? I do want to thank tptb for bringing back Finola Hughes and putting her on contract. She’s the best part of the show for me.

Ditto everything you just said, Hope! And because I love him so much, I’ll add an extra “Bring Back Tristan Rogers” to your comments!

totally agree with you! Love the threesome with Luke and Tracy, the sadness that Anna and Patrick have endured. When Faison comes back…who knows what will happen!

I would LOVE it if Faison came back! I wish they would also do a better job of explaining why Robert/Anna stayed away from each other and Robin for so long. They need to undo the Guza Scorpio damage and have an explanation in keeping with their history and characters. I wish they would bring Sri Rao (Night Shift writer) in to to write for the Scorpios/other legacy characters. He has such a great understanding of Scorpio history and he watched back in the day! No offense to RC, but his heart obviously lies with OLTL…which I can understand. How about some TEAM WRITING! SR/RC! Then everybody would be happy! A girl can dream, right! 😉

Been Loving GH, with all the veterans like Finola and Lu/Dante on and their love story. Loved every single episode. Love GH and hope theres a fan club weekend next yr because I want to go. Hope GH is on for yrs to come

Whooo hoooo!!!!

sorry gh fans have to say it robin matson is saving the day..i havnt watched since the last time genie francis came back ,,but i tuned in to se robin back,,,watch when her role is up ratings will dip again,

GH is better than ever! Love the old faves like Anna, Luke and Tracy and love OLTL characters mixing it up..Todd is just awesome..comic relief that the show needed. Love Michael with Starr! Ron and Frank have worked their magic as always! Been watching since I was a kid over thirty years and GH is feeling like it did years ago..every single episode is awesome!

I really like crazy Heather causing havoc and the scenes with her and Todd.I would love to see that “friendship” to continue.I hope they keep Heather around long term so she can continue to keep things exciting !! I think spoilers are a big part of the declining ratings for soaps,Before the internet you had to turn in every day to see whay happened next, now you can find out how everything is going to turn out days before it airs–also you know far in advance who’s coming and leaving the show.I think if less info was given before hand, ratings would increase.

That’s cause Blair was on. Get the story line of Todd and Victor going and the ratings will soar!!!

That is exactly right 🙂

I would love to see that!!!!

Blair didn’t show up until this past week, these ratings are for the week before.

Gang, DAYS is in SERIOUS trouble. I’ve seen the promo for the cliffhanger…and DAYSaster? Really? I want them to make it on general principle, but they MUST do better than this.

GH-Scoff all you want, but ratings have been more up than down since Cartini took over, and displaced DAYS fans, we’ll be glad to have you in with us during the Olympic break…

Ever since Frank and Ron came from OLTL, GH is the best its been in years! Love the cross over characters from OLTL which was my favorite soap and wish they would bring it back! Have been watching since I was 13 I am now 57! Also please Frank and Ron give us back our favorite #1 soap couple Todd & Blair! PLEASE give Kassie a contract. They are so good together! Love those two together, we all know they belong together and you do too!

That’s good news for GH..Keep up the good work….. Still like my favorite soap OLTL more thah GH..OLTL is 1st. & GH is 2nd for me……………………

me too

This goes to show that if OLTL were place rightfully back where it belongs that ABC could add to their gains. We just want our scripted drama back, I miss OLTL so much every weekday! I love GH and the OLTL characters that been mixed in, plus the writers making artwork out of it all. Absolutely genius!!

The feeling is mutual………………………………I agree with you Misty 100%

FV/RC are the best writing/EP team out there. Its too bad Frons canceled OLTL but hope this great team is appreciated at GH. Now if ABC would just run promos maybe they could get some of the old viewers back that Guza/Phelps ran off.

Carlivati and Valentini are geniuses. Plain and simple. Ron’s writing is head and shoulders above the entire TV fray. GH owes its resurgence to the dynamic team composed of the former OLTL writer and that show’s ex-producer. Bringing back classic characters to the GH storyline was a brilliant and successful strategy. It all goes to show that true storytelling produces sterling results. It also proves the fact that OLTL was murdered in cold blood.

i couldn’t agree more!!

Too bad the ex-OLTL writers couldn’t have kept OLTL energized like GH is…

I LOVE Days and have been a loyal viewer of my fave soap since I was a kid. However, I am very worried about the state of things in Salem. I have watched Days through its many ups and downs over the years; and I can’t, for the life of me, understand how the current writers have missed so many opportunities to portray dramatic conflict. Soaps, when they are done well, are all about conflict, emotions, beloved characters, and the “what will happen next factor?”. Days has just missed so many opportunities lately. Why didn’t Corday see that Carrie/Christie Clark is riveting and interesting to watch, and come up with some great plot revisiting Carrie and Sammi? Why do we have the inane, repetitive storyline with Brady and Madison and that old man that plays Madison’s ex? Sarah Brown is an excellent actress. Why don’t the writers utilize her? Why can’t Days separate John and Marlena, acknowledge that John is boring (sorry) and write a dramatic storyline that involves the talents of the legendary, still beautiful, Deidre Hall?? (btw, please stop Will from calling her “Grandma Marlena” ten times a week. Really, we know she’s he’s grandma. We know that Deidre Hall is now old enough to play a grandmother. But, enough already- Hall is riveting, and probably expensive to keep on contract. Why not USE HER??!!) Why do they keep the stocker/Gabby storyline going when it is just plain unbelievable, and lacking any emotional depth whatsoever? Also, that actress that plays Gabby is just plain terrible. (sorry) How did the casting director miss that? Why oh why do have they missed 101 possible story lines for Will that could shed some light on the coming out process, beyond the “I’m out, now I gotta blackmail E.J yet another time?” Why don’t the writers capitalize on the chemistry between Sammi and EJ and write something compelling, instead of repeating the same old dialogue and circumstances. And yes, we know they have “kids” together, but if I hear Sammi/Allison mention their “kids” in one more scene together, I’m gonna throw out my hourglass. And for God’s sakes, why did they ruin Rafe’s character by putting him in that nonsensical “relationship” with Carrie?? Rafe has always been a stand-up guy, and he simply would not go after his wife (or ex-wife’s) sister. The whole storyline seemed false from the moment it began, and Days is simply wasting Galen’s talent. Why are they pairing up Abigail and that really boring actor (sorry) while completely ignoring the talents of Jenn and Jack?? Why are they writing off Jack (AGAIN) before trying a new direction for his character? Why don’t they give Jen/Melissa Reeves a compelling, emotional storyline that utilizes her character??
Sorry, but I love Days. Every time I read a story on this website that mentions a dip in the ratings, I worry that Days may not make it to their next anniversary. Also, for the life of me, I do not understand Ken Corday. He owns this show. This show was created by his parents many years ago. He has been the executive producer for decades. Where the hell is he? Doesn’t he read these scripts? If someone ran any of the above stories by me, months before they were about to be filmed, I would have said “stop- we need some real writing here.” Why has Corday been SO incredibly ineffective?? He has been in this business his entire life, and yet he can’t intervene and tell his staff that the past year or so of stories have just plain sucked?? Corday needs a refresher course in producing. Perhaps, GH’s Frank Valeniti and his head writer Ron C. can offer Corday and company some lessons in production values. One Life’s former producer and writing team have brought life, stories, and creativity back to GH, just when I was about to give up watching. They know how to use characters and create an entertaining show. Perhaps they could offer some assistance to my favorite characters in Salem before that hourglass runs our of sand.

I also wonder if the drops can be traced back to the loss of Soapnet in so many markets. For example, I hadn’t watched Days in many years, but was able to catch up on it in the evenings on Soapnet after OLTL was canceled. (At that point, I had some evening time I could replace OLTL with Days.) Then I would watch Days sometimes during the day when it aired if I had time because I knew what was currently going on with the characters. Now, my Soapnet is gone. I can’t watch Days in the evening so don’t have the momentum to watch during the day when I’m busy with other things and have lost track of current Days events. They lost me as a viewer, unfortunately.

I’m loving GH since Frank and Ron took over. I’ve been a GH fan for 18 years, so my loyalty is to GH first and foremost, and it always will be. But I’m happy with the way they’ve incorporated the OLTL characters into the show, and I think they’ve all fit in very nicely. Todd has quickly become one of my favorites. The guy is a hoot.

But I also didn’t want to see the show become OLTL 2.0 either. I know that’s what some people wanna see, but that wouldn’t be fair to the loyal GH fans. Frank and Ron have done a nice job coming up with a happy medium that should be able to please fans of BOTH shows.

They’ve brought in some OLTL characters, but also honored GH’s brilliant history by featuring legendary characters like Anna and Heather, rejuvenating a boring character like Kate and making her exciting again, and giving a great actor like Jason Thompson the best material of his career. The mob storylines have been put on the backburner, as well, which is also a big positive in my book.

They still have plenty of work to do, and the show isn’t perfect. But all the people that have tuned out for various reasons in recent years should give GH another chance.

Great news for GH, may the ratings continue to fly high! Bring back the Nurses Ball and it will be magical. I think Robin’s ghost, Heather’s shenigans helped!

Heather said yesterday to Anna that Robin is ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is she telling the truth or not??? Heather is twisted…………….

Heather is twisted, but cleaver, she knows what she is doing By telling Anna that Robin is alive, and It looks like she knows who has Robin, I keep hearing that Ewan is involved. Interesting.

Don’t like GH. As a longtime Days viewer. There is hope for the show. The new writers are coming, and the cliffhanger this week.

To each his own…Always liked the soaps on abc…Never ventured to the other networks soaps………………….

May the ratings coninue to plummet like a mill stone on “Y & R” – then and only then can we P-R-A-Y for new writers!!!

The day that Days showed somone putting the gloves in back of the print in Ejays, Ian was in another scene talking to Kate… then days later they show a replay of that scene showing it is Ian… poor writing and editing by the show… mistakes like that should not happen…

my take on that was, they were just showing, the audience, the inevitable… that, we already, surmised…that it was Ian all along… course, it would seem, like Ian’s responsible for all the mayem… going on… ie: Brady’s being drugged, framing EJ… cause, Ian wanted Stefano’s empire…thru Kate. course, kate is “on” to him… becoming more suspicious… and now… John Black… finally, is being given some thing to do…

now, John, who is a “DiMera”… is going to contest Stefano’s will…. etc… and get, what is “rightfully” his share as well…. Marlena quipping… imagine, John… running the DiMera Empire….

doesn’t this all seem like a lot is happening to EJ… without “his” family, prior to the return of Kristen and Stefano? October 11, can’t come soon enuf for EJ… i thought, days, would wait… till both, kristen and Stefano… were back… to help EJ… fight it all out… with Salemites.

i say this, as well, cause, Lucas found the letter, Will put in the safe, that alice wrote to stefano, saying EJ is not his son…. i was hoping this would all come to light in october, when stefano, and kristen returned…. how will they play this out? i want EJ to be a DiMera.

There is still a lot of life left in GH!! Keep watching soaps my fellow fans.

You could say tthat again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow! Guess I am not the only one not watching Days lately. Hope the cliffhanger will bring us all back and make us want to watch again.

Loving the oltl characters on GH bring more to town! Bought time for a crazed wife to check in on John Mcbain.

Like OLTL charcters on GH also…………..They should bring Viki in town to visit her brother Todd……

I heard at soaptown that it may happen and a visit from Vicki is in the future, I sure hope so, I hope it is not a rumor, How can the General hospital fans who don’t like our One life to live crossovers dislike our Vicki?

I can’t see how they wouldn’t like Viki.. She is a sweet heart, a very good actress which she has proved over &over again………….She has such a beautiful smile !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can’t stop saying enough good things about our Viki (Erika Slezak)…………………………………………………………………….

This for Barabara t. Loves OLTL #1……….You were right about Ewan the shrink…He is behind everything to do about Robin….What is his motive???/ Why is he doing this????? He comes off as goody two shoes…But he isn’t…Heather was telling the truth to Anna today(thurs.) about Robin being alive..That she saw Robin in Ferncliff when she was there…Poor Robin got a shock treatment..Will she lose all her memories??? And what about Todd today seeing on his computer the confession of Johnny’s killing of Starr’s baby & husband… Oh BOY!!! EXCITING!!! PLEASE REPLY TO MY COMMENTS & LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where are you Barbara t..Loves OLTL #1….Wanted you to read my comments & let me know what you think…..

He shoot out the TIRES…AGAIN PLEASE REPLY TO MY COMMENTS Barbara t…Loves OLTL #!………………GH is ROCKIN TODAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, I have been gone, never got any e mails from you, I was right about that Ewan guy now the big question is who does he work for and why did he choose to shock our poor Robin. Do you think Heather was telling the truth i have to hear more today It is getting very interesting, I hope Robin will be ok and she gets found SOON before they shock her again, I want to know who this enemy of Anna is. And it looks like Todd does know about Johnny shooting out those tires, If he did it maybe someone else did it and we are being lead to believe it was Johnny, Yes General hospital is getting good.

I saw in soap digest today it said Robin has a dangerous escape….What ever that means…I just read the cover in the supermarket..Didn’t buy it. Don’t know the rest of the story……Who is Ewan taking orders from when he was on the phone in ferncliff???? Anna is very determined and is going to austria..She found the pamphlet on the floor by robins bed…………….keep watchiin….Talk to you later…

This is not surprising. As far as I am concerned, ABC always had the best soaps. And I not just talking about GH, AMC and OLTL, but Dark Shadows, Ryan’s Hope, Edge of Night, Port Chuck (as I called it), etc. ABC would be riding very high if they had just left things alone and left the 3 super soaps continue. But no, they had an go mess things up, screw with the viewers, and now they are paying for it. I hardly watch ABC anymore, except for GH, and Castle (but its on summer hiatus). There was a time I would pretty much watch ABC all the time. But no more..

Watched Dark Shadows..It was a different kind of soap opera…Creepy but good at times…………………………………………………..I watch just GH on abc too……ABC is making themselves to be losers as far as daytime programming goes…A lot of shows no one will ever watch…Reality/info crap shows that don’t work on daytime programming… As we all well know………The soaps made so much money for ABC threw so many, many years ,why did they have to destroy it ? Doesn’t make any sense to me..I say why ruin a good thing if there are a lot of viewers enjoying their soaps & will continue to watch them always…They don’t know what they are doing that’s ovious…………………………………..

YOUNG and the RESTLESS is still kicking ass and taking names; it’s the show all of the other aspire to be! LOVING Y&R right now!!!

I have not been watching gh like I use to but now with the return off Robin I will come back.I have been watching gh for 35 years and is a big fan but nothing has been keeping me tuned in like before ,oh I can’t wait until tomorrow looking to see if I can find a sneak peek but now that I see Robin coming back I will be back,I only watch Patrick and fast forward through the rest .the show has lost a lot of people but Robin will bring them back

Days’ ratings took a dip Spring 2012 when couples were broken up. Marlene McPherson and D. Thomas, then head writers were made to take the fall for what may have been unwise decisions by NBC execs who interfered with Days writing. The gay Will Horton storyline was also a major reason for the dip in the ratings.

The Lexie illness/death storyline briefly elevated the ratings. But the couples who were broken up have not been reunited. Instead of new writers blowing up Salem, bring back Marlene McPherson and D. Thomas and let them write the stories they wanted to write in the first place. After the September 2011 Days reset, rating were increasing. Ratings even reached to coveted 2.0. Go back to what was started in September 2011 and thime time do it right. That will fix the show the right way.

Blowing up Salem is stupid and disrespectful of the hard work and imagination done by wiriters who were familiar with and respected the show’s history and tradition.

It was doctor kenan!!! Get out of here to me that means he works for Helena

I heard that they were leaning to it tying back to Anna years ago when she was being held in a cage, wasn’t that some crazy doctor who had an obsession with her? Anyway they may have decided to switch gears but I always knew this Dr. Keenan was no good he must have a connection with someone who hates Anna and maybe Robert you noticed she kept calling out for Patrick plus her mom & dad I hope this means my main man Robert Scorpio is coming back.

do you mean Grant Putnam? he tried to kidnap Robin and actually kidnapped Anna.

“In early 1988, Robin was kidnapped by the insane Grant Putnam. Grant even killed Filomena and kidnapped Anna, holding her in a cage inside his cottage where she was guarded by a Doberman named Satan.” but I can’t find out what happened to Grant when they rescued Anna… he was psycho. Did they put him in FernCliff or shoot him dead??

yeah – I just read that on Wikipedia! ha! well I was correct in thinking it was FernCliff and was thinking it was a doctor doing work for Helena… so I wonder if kenan has something to do with Helena besides being Cassandra’s dr. and renting Windemere a while back.

who thinks johnny is going to sleep with the fishes???? You know Todd wants to kill him what can stop him??? And i was hoping that liz had a boyfriend for good….gee how can that be if he is evil, i guess sam and jason are over and done with well maybe jason and liz will decide to be together again. She needs a husband, so why dont they find her one! lol. As for other soap stars from our soaps that got canceled i am all for them appearing on GH till someone gets some balls and maybe writes a new soap with all them in it, its possible they could do that, if they put their minds to it! Keep the family lines how close was pine valley to port charles and landview??? Anyone that smart enough to know? If they near enough a disaster could strike one and them all come to live in a new town, it happens alot this day and age, and people move on, so why not?

Rafe and Carrie were great together and very believable.Sorry to see Carrie leave.Did not care for Austin.

Screw the Chew, Paul Lee and ABC! “ABC is not looking to revive All My Children or One Life to Live”. Then sell the DAMN rights back to Agnes Nixon or to another interested party!!!!! Why is ABC holding on to the rights of OUR soaps?????

DAYS and ‘Supernatural’ Alum Jensen Ackles Joins the Cast of Justin Hartley’s CBS Series ‘Tracker’

Look who’s joining Justin Hartley’s hit freshman drama, Tracker! None other than another soap alum, former Days of our Lives and Supernatural favorite Jensen Ackles.

In a reveal via Hartley’s Instagram on Thursday, Ackles is set to play Hartley’s on-screen brother on the CBS procedural drama. In Tracker, Colter Shaw is estranged from his brother, Russell, which has been a big part of the mystery of season one.

Ackles is best known for his long run as Dean Winchester in The CW’s Supernatural, a role he reprised in the prequel of the series The Winchesters. He also recently starred in ABC’s Big Sky as Sheriff Beau Arlen and in The Boys as Soldier Boy.

Jensen was the original Eric Brady on Days of our Lives, a role he played from 1997-2000, before departing for the world of primetime and film.  Eric was in love with Nicole played by Arianne Zucker. The part of Eric was recast with Greg Vaughan taking over the role in 2012.

In his Instagram post, Justin thanked everyone for watching Tracker, and then revealed Ackles as the surprise casting announcement in the role of Russell, while Jensen was playing pinball in the video! No word yet on when Jensen’s first episode as Russell will air. Stay tuned.

Check out Justin’s casting post featuring Jensen Ackles below.  So, what do you think of Justin and Jensen playing brothers on Tracker? Share your thoughts in the comment section.

Wally Kurth Talks on His DAYS Daytime Emmy Nomination, His Emotional Scenes, and Remembering John Aniston

During our 2023 year-end honors at Michael Fairman TV, we named Wally Kurth as our pick for Best Overall Performance by an Actor for his double-turn as both Ned Quartermaine on General Hospital and as Justin Kiriakis on Days of our Lives. So, it was absolutely no surprise to us that Wally landed a Daytime Emmy nomination for his riveting work as a grieving Justin in the Supporting Actor category for the upcoming 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

On DAYS, Justin had been put through the emotional wringer, of first, losing his beloved Uncle Vic, played by the late John Aniston, and then finding out that Victor was the supposed biological father to Justin’s son, Alex (Rob Scott Wilson). If you didn’t reach for the hankies during some of Kurth’s work in these scenes, we don’t know what will make you do so.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Wally to get his reaction to his fourth Daytime Emmy nomination in the last six years. Kurth was nominated in the Supporting category in 2018, 2020 and now 2024 and Lead Actor in 2021.

In addition, Wally shares what scenes were on his nominated reel, how John Aniston impacted his work, how he has changed as an actor over the years with a new outlook, and being the only actor out there with two long-running roles on two long-running soaps, and much more. Here’s what Wally had to share below.

Congratulations on your well-deserved nomination. You decided to submit yourself this year for Emmy contention in both Lead Actor for GH and Supporting Actor at DAYS, correct?

WALLY: I did. I thought the DAYS reel was a little more dramatic, much more emotional. I had thought with the way the judging goes that it might be a little bit more, winnable, if you will. I enjoyed and was proud of my work at General Hospital, so it’s all good. I’m thrilled. It’s always nice to be nominated.

Photo: JPI

What scenes did you ultimately choose for your Supporting Actor reel?

WALLY: I started chronologically, as always, trying to tell a little bit of a story. I actually started with a scene where Justin has to tell Maggie (Suzanne Rogers) that Victor’s (the late John Aniston) plane went down and it was not found. Then, the scene with Bonnie (Judi Evans) where I sort of have to let it all out, and grieve the loss of this man who was practically Justin’s father, but it was his Uncle Vic. We have a little scene talking about Victor, and then there is a short snippet at the funeral where Justin eulogizes Victor. Next, we jump to scene where Justin discovers the letter where Angelica admits that indeed Victor is Alex’s father (Rob Scott Wilson). So then, Justin has to tell Alex, and then I also sort of grieve the fact that I’m no longer his father. Justin basically lost his son. It was very dramatic and very emotional. I was guessing the judges would be like, “Hey! Enough with the crying! Stop, you big baby!” But, they didn’t. They must have thought that it was convincing enough that it felt really truthful at how Justin was upset about these two unfortunate realizations.

Photo: JPI

You bring up a really good point. I talk to actors all the time about crying on Emmy reels. Sometimes, many feel it might put voters off. But obviously, this time it worked well for you!

WALLY:  What I liked about the crying scenes was that, like in real life, you’re not crying all the time when something bad is happening, right? I think crying happens and it takes you off guard. It happens without you realizing it. These were all moments when Justin was alone, really. Bonnie comes in the room where Justin is just kind of like dealing with it. And then her coming in, opens up Justin and she is there to hold him. I think that often happens in real life. I thought that was correct for the writers to do that, you know, that Justin would break down when he was alone.

Did you feel the pressure of wanting to get these scenes when Victor died and at his memorial, just right due to the enormity to it, and to do justice for John Aniston?

WALLY: I allowed myself to use my heartbreak over John Aniston. I loved him. I just sort of allowed his presence for me in the scenes. It was sweet. It was good for me. I’m just thinking about it now and I feel teary-eyed. John was such a sweet man. He led by example, and he really did teach me how to be a professional actor, and he was a mentor. He never told me anything specific, but he was just John, and in the scenes, this was the time for me tell him how I feel.

Then, you had the heartbreaking scenes with Rob Scott Wilson where Justin tells Alex he is not his father!

WALLY:  I thought that was just really challenging material. As I get older, I just trust the material, and don’t get ahead of myself. I trust myself with the emotion. Just let it happen if it happens. When I first read it, I kind of imagined what it could look like and then you just let it unfold from there.

You’ve got Robert Gossett (Marshall, GH), A Martinez (Nardo, The Bay), Mike Manning (Caleb, The Bay), and Bryton James (Devon, Y&R) all in your category. Robert has won two Daytime Emmys in a row, last year for Supporting Actor and the year before for Guest Performer.

WALLY:  l love Robert. I worked with the character Marshall on General Hospital, and we had so much fun. He’s a great guy and a really good actor. A Martinez is the best guy ever. I have such admiration for him. Whenever I see him, we always really connect and to be in included with him is great. Bryton James, I don’t know, but I know he beat me in this category in 2020. Mike Manning, I didn’t get the opportunity to know when he was at DAYS as he weren’t in scenes together, but I hear good things about him, too.

When you are judging Emmy reels, what do you look for when you’re voting on a performance?

WALLY: That’s a really great question. And because let’s face it, there’s just a lot of terrific talent in daytime. This year, I judged two categories. I don’t just go with, “Okay, who’s crying the most.” I really try to go with the one who’s touches me the most, who surprises me and moves me. And so, if you go with that, you’re probably going in the right direction. I also think that upfront you do need to kind of give them something in the first couple minutes that shows you know what you’re doing and don’t make it too repetitive.

Who did you first tell you were nominated?

WALLY: My manager, Michael Bruno called me. I was in Chicago with my daughters having a late breakfast and I knew the nominations were going to happen around 11 am Chicago time. I didn’t tell my daughters about what was happening, just in case, I didn’t get nominated. So, when Michael called, I went, “Oh, boy!” I told my daughters who were sitting at the table with me. So, they were the first two people that I could tell, and that was really nice.  We had champagne which was really funny because I bought three little glasses of champagne, and as soon as I bought it, we toasted. They said, “We don’t really like champagne.” So, I ended up drinking all three glasses. (Laughs)

What do you think of Eric Martsolf (Brady), your Day Players Band member, and DAYS co-star getting a Lead Actor nomination?

WALLY: I remember, I was like talking to him and I was like, “Eric, are you going to submit yourself?” And he is like, “I don’t know. I don’t really have anything …” And the next thing you know, he’s nominated. I’m like, “Wow! I guess he found something!” (Laughs) I love Eric. I have such respect for him and his gift, and he works really hard. So, I was very happy for him. I’m glad we weren’t in the same category, however.

How many years now have you been playing Justin on DAYS?

WALLY: I started here 37 years ago in 1987. I was there for four years and then I left. Then, 18 years later, Ken Corday (EP, DAYS) invited me back in 2009 and I’ve been on the show now for 15 years. So, I guess a total of 20 years on and off over the last 37 years. Everyone remembers 1987-1991 … those were big, big years for Justin and Adrienne who back then were a supercouple.

Have you determined who you would thank in your acceptance speech if you win this year’s Supporting Actor Daytime Emmy?

WALLY: I feel like this year I kind of have an idea of what I would say. I think I can remember all of that without writing it down. If I had gotten nominated for both shows, I was definitely going to point out and thank the powers-that-be for giving me dual citizenship and how much I appreciate that. I do think that being on both soaps, I will go to my grave believing that it’s made me a better actor. In fact, since I’ve been doing both shows, I’ve been nominated for Daytime Emmys. I’ve become a better actor. I feel like maybe it’s just that I’ve gotten older and wiser, but I feel as though when I go in there to work, I’m really focused and I’m really prepared. I know I pretty much get one shot to get it. We’re in the business of “one takes” now in the soaps.

People are so lucky to even have one enduring role in their careers, but you’ve been able to have two, and they’re completely separate characters on two legacy shows; one which just turned 61, General Hospital, and the other Days of our Lives which will soon celebrate 60 years, as well.

WALLY: I didn’t plan on it. I must have done something right. Back in 2009, Ken called me up and invited me back to DAYS. I really jumped in. I’d been out of work for four or five years. I went back with a whole new attitude about the work, about the genre.  In 2004, when I left General Hospital, I was kind of burnt out. Looking back on it, I didn’t have a good attitude and I was just done. I was kind of tired. New writers come in and sometimes, when you have new writers that look at your character differently, it can be very difficult, because you just know that their passion is not with your character. However, in this case, I’m like, “I’m going to take whatever the writers give me and do the best I can and do my job. Let the writers do their job.” I think the writers also know that I really respect them and I’m not going to complain. I’m not going to tell them what to do and I’m going to stay out of it. They have enough to work out. They have enough to do. I’m going to be the problem solver, not the problem creator. There are enough problem creators. Believe me when I tell you that every time I leave those sets, I’m like, “Thank you. I love it.  See you the next time I see you.” I know how lucky I am to do both shows and to have this opportunity to act at my age and still be sent scripts. I love the art of acting. I’d do it for free. The fact that they’re paying me and I am able to do this and work with these great, wonderful, talented actors every day, it’s kind of mind-blowing.

Lisa Rinna Would Be Down to Reprise Her Role of Taylor McBride in ‘Melrose Place’ Reboot

When Lisa Rinna departed her popular role of Billie Reed on Days of our Lives back in 1995, her next major role would be a jump to primetime and the soapy Melrose Place.

In 1996, Lisa was introduced as new character Taylor McBride and stayed with the Fox young adult sudser for three seasons. Now in 2024, with the recent reveal that a Melrose Place revival is the works with Heather Locklear, Daphne Zuniga and Laura Leighton all on board to reprise their signature roles, would Rinna board the project should it come to fruition?

Speaking with PEOPLE, Rinna expressed, “Well, gosh, I’ve heard about it. I haven’t been approached or anything, but I would love to see what Taylor McBride is up to 25 years later. Wouldn’t that be something?”

OG Melrose Place fans know that in story, Taylor moved to the Melrose Place apartment building with her husband Kyle played by Rob Estes. However, Taylor had her eye on Dr. Peter Burns played by former GH star Jack Wagner (ex-Frisco). But, by the time she had moved to the apartment complex, Peter had married tough as nails ad executive, Amanda Woodward, played by Heather Locklear.

Recalling her time on Melrose Place, Rinna added that it, “was one of my greatest and most fun acting experiences, playing Taylor and working with Heather and the whole crew.”  Rinna also noted, “So if they need a Taylor McBride appearance, they know who to call. I’m around.”

The new Melrose Place is in development at CBS Studios. In the premise of the reboot, the Melrose Place residents reunite after the death of one of their friends, “but the pressure cooker of a reunion soon uncovers old traumas, rekindles old romances, reignites old resentments, and reveals new secrets… throwing our characters into chaotic drama that’s reminiscent of the past, but with a much more modern perspective.”

So, would you want to see Lisa Rinna reprise her Melrose Place role as Taylor McBride? Comment below.
