‘Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman’ Remake Lands at TBS

Photo: JPI/NormanLearProd

Another soap opera gets a reboot, and as we previously reported this one is starring former Schitt’s Creek star, Emily Hampshire.

The remake is of the satirical, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman ,that developed quite the cult-following back in the 70’s and was a look into American media and consumer culture which starred Louise Lasser as Mary Hartman. In the original, Mary was a small-town Ohio housewife who reacted to the bizarre goings on all around her. The cast also included Greg Mullavey, Dody Goodman, Norman Alden and Mary Kay Place.

In the updated version of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, the loglines reveal it’s: “about a small-town woman who feels like a nobody in every aspect of her life until she suddenly becomes a ‘verified[ social media somebody after her nervous breakdown goes viral.”

According to Variety, “After being shopped by Sony Pictures TV to buyers this spring, the project has landed at TBS.”  That means that it will be in development for the cable outlet.

In addition, it was a welcome birthday present for its creator, the iconic Norman Lear who is celebrating his 99th birthday.

Hampshire not only will star as “Mary” but she will also serve as an executive producer and will co-write the script with Jacob Tierney (Letterkenny).

So, do you like the concept of the updated version of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman? Did you watch the original version? Comment below.

Ummmm. No. Along with ‘Soap'(don’t even try it with this too) this was must see tv. I was 14 when this debuted and my parents were like, it you can stay up long enough to watch it and get up for school go for it. oh I did LOL. It was always a competition to see who fell asleep first between me and three of my brothers (I have 8 and ONE sister, the last of 10). That was one great thing. Our tv watching was never relegated(too many kids LOL). The movie of the week back in the days, ‘Crowhaven Farm’ starring Hope Lange gave me nightmares for days, but I still watched it. Not to mention my sister-in-law giving me her copy of ‘Salem’s Lot’. I didn’t think any vampire could scare me more than Barnabus Collins. I couldn’t sleep well for weeks. Or my grandmother who would visit, put blankets up to the window in the middle of a Saturday afternoon, and turn to a monster movie. ‘War of the Gargantuas’ still scares me. I digress. This particular show needs to be left well alone.

You only need to look at the roster of Broadway shows to see that the industry is bankrupt for new ideas. Even THIRD rate sitcoms are becoming musicals! My question about this MARY HARTMAN retread is the same. Why not just rerun the old series for diehard fans OR start a similar show but without using the HARTMAN names and characters. That way true fans won’t feel ripped off, as they’re bound to. I have zero interest in the series but, if it’s good, well, stranger things have happened.

Where can I watch ALL of the original episodes??

U tube

This is exciting news. I loved the original series. Louise Lasser, Greg Mullavey, Dody Goodman and the entire cast were just hysterical. I hope the new version does it justice. The best part is it will be on TBS. Something we can actually see.

Yes I did watch it back in the day. Not a sure that I like this concept. I guess I’ll have to watch and see@

When will it air?

I loved Mary Hartman and have looked for the old version to no avail. I’m happy to see a remake though I don’t know if anyone will be able to replace Lassers iconic roll.
