GENERAL HOSPITAL: Nina Helps Sonny After Realizing He is Off His Meds
Wednesday’s episode of General Hospital, will no doubt lead to Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Nina (Cynthia Watros) becoming closer, because she was witness, went through, and helped the mobster get help while he was having a manic episode after being off his meds for bipolar disorder.
A disheveled Sonny was outside insulating the kids’ treehouse, didn’t sleep all night, is not eating, and tells Nina – who stayed the night at the Corinthos’ home on the couch – that he feels great. Then, he tells Nina to stop telling him what to do and to stay out of his way.
Nina panics and calls Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) at the hospital worried that Sonny is off his meds, and she needs medical advice on what to do about it. Britt tells Nina it’s important to get Sonny to a doctor and not argue with him, but to get him to acknowledge he is having a manic episode.
After the call, Nina asks Sonny not to leave and to explain bipolar disorder to her. He replies it’s like a nightmare but that’s not what’s happening now. Then, he grabs her wrists hard as she stands at the door, as he wants to leave, and Nina tells him, she is hurting her. Sonny has a moment of realization and insists he does not hurt women. Sonny asks Nina if she is now afraid of him? She tells him she isn’t. All of a sudden, Sonny feels exhausted. He sits with Nina and starts to cry and admits he has been off his meds. She gets him to agree that he needs to see Dr. Sullivan and get a refill.
Sonny and Nina arrive at GH, and Britt shows them to an examining room. Nina wants to make sure he’s OK, before she exits, but Sonny wants to make sure he did not injure her wrists. Nina says she is OK, but you could tell she is emotional from the entire encounter she went through with Sonny.
Maurice Benard took to Twitter within the last 24 hours stating about the storyline which is throwing Sonny’s love life in turmoil and working opposite both Laura Wright (Carly) and Cynthia Watros: “I go where ever it is best for the show and fortunately right now this story is doing well, even better than well, now you may not want to hear that. You already know I love Laura and Cynthia. I keep saying this is between history and change, I think after 20 years change is good.”

Well, I’m torn. I loved Cynthia Watros’ powerful, sensitive work here and I did think Sonny’s final collapse was moving. But until then, I was really panicking, wondering how long his disturbing episode would continue and then become several weeks’ worth of episodes. Too much Sonny & Carly is the root of the show’s failure to engage for me. And this new Yoga class setting has quickly become gossip central and confrontation heaven. Hard to believe Carly’s posh hotel doesn’t have its own exercise center.
The problem for me is “been there, done that” (twice) with the bipolar disorder storyline (Sonny, Morgan). When will the writers try something new or innovative! It’s been so long that they’ve tried I don’t even remember (and I’ve watched since Genie was a teenager). I can see a change from CarSon, but Nina’s story makes NO SENSE. She fell in love with a persona, not a person; and Sonny, still the vindictive mob boss, would have been well and truly pissed at her when he got home and realized his 2 year old didn’t even know who he was! But now are we supposed to believe that Nina is now going to be a happy, satisfied mob wife?! Especially with the addition of Jennifer Smith and a new “war” brewing? Give me a break! Carly lasted 20 years because she could deal with “the life”, nobody else could and there’s a laundry list of ‘else’s’! Personally, I think Carly should move on away from “the life”, focus on her business and Sonny should be alone.
I know what you mean about trying something new. I loved the storyline when Laura learned she had 2 brothers. It was great seeing her in a story that pre-dated Luke and had nothing to do with the Cassadines. It was good while it lasted. Unfortunately, here we go again throwing Laura into another Luke and Jennifer Smith story. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVED the LnL early days. I respect the writers for including vintage characters for those of us who love and remember them. However, be more creative please. In fairness, GH is still better than DOOL with its repeated “mask” and “possession” stories.

Agree with you but I don’t think we’ll ever have too much Sonny and Carly as long as they are on GH. Maurice also loves and pushes educating the Bi-Polar thing as much as possible. I’ve heard him say it on his shows. What bothered me a lot was him first throwing the glass and then the bottle of pills against the wall. There are two sets of little feet running into the kitchen. I also agree with others that Carly should have recognised his symptoms right away if she wasn’t so wrapped up in herself, and continually saying the two little ones should be with their dad, while the idiot is trying to maybe electrocute them by running electricity out to their tree house. They aren’t safe around him. I also felt sorry for Drew even though he realized why Sonny was acting the way he was, it still hurt to hear all that.That leads me to Monica inquiring as to how Sonny was, sincerely interested in her son’s killer’s well being.
It’s ridiculous that they’re trying to spin this into a Nina redemption storyline.
Just as was the case in Tricky Dick Nixon Falls, she’s manipulating Sonny’s life & withholding the truth from his family….. and then she’ll cry about why they all hate her.
This time it’s arguably worse…. When Sonny didn’t know who he was, he was living a fake life, but at least not much of a risk to anybody. Manic Sonny is potentially a danger to himself and all of those around him, which would include Nina. Probably more her than anybody, should Sonny realize who it is that’s been screwing up his life for the better part of the last year, while he’s in “freakout” mode.
Manic episode or not, Sonny’s treatment of Drew at the Savoy annoyed me. I have not liked how the writers have written New-Drew. Sonny and Carly were fine with Drew before he went missing. Even though they basically abandoned Drew upon Jason’s return, they weren’t speaking ill of Drew. They were still cordial to Drew whenever they saw him. This re-write of how they never cared for Drew bothers me.
Also, Drew has all of Jason’s memories up to a certain point. Therefore, Drew would have known right away Sonny was off his meds. Also a few months ago, Drew was saying “I got to know Jason a little better while we were on Cassadine Island.”
Drew already knew Jason well for 2 reasons:
A. He already has most of his memories.
B. He and Jason became cordial during Oscar’s storyline. It was one of Oscar’s dying wishes for Jason and Drew to grow closer. They had no animosity toward each other.
Drew did recognize what was going on with Sonny. He said as much to Curtis… who was totally confused, having never seen Sonny in “manic” mode. I would guess that Drew didn’t try to help Sonny any further after the reaction he got from Sonny…. which was probably more Sonny – in bipolar mode – lashing out about Jason’s supposed “death” than any real animosity towards Drew himself.
Obviously Sonny will be doing an “apology” tour once he’s back on his meds & stabilized.
You’re not paying attention to the bipolar part of the story line! That whole episode with Drew and Sonny was the bipolar talking, not the rational, on his meds Sonny. He was simply lashing out at the closest thing to him, which unfortunate was Drew.

Yes, but Drew is still hurt by this tirade Sonny unleashed on him. Drew probably feels that although Sonny wouldn’t have said those things if he had been on his meds, he probably feels that way but wouldn’t have said them when he was under control.
Nina’s storyline (with Sonny, Nelle, Carly) has kept me interested in GH the last couple of years. Keep it going!!
CW is a powerhouse I can’t imagine Stafford in this role lord help us all with her over the top hysterics ! Saying that good luck to all of them we are about to close the door so enjoy while you can

With her outrageous clothes and arms and legs flying all over the place. I did not like her as Nina and personally don’t care for her as Phyllis. I know a lot of people are crazy about her on Y&R.
The whole mess is an even up–
Carly has been in love with Jason from day one–
She lived a lie through her marriage to Sonny..
Carly lived her happy dream to marry Jason.
She is still is in love with Jason.
Sonny/Mike fell in love with Nina–
Carly lived the greatest love sin..
So–
Carly was in love with Jason–
Mike fell in love with Nina,
and now as sonny struggles with it..
Great scenes BUT the story arc is ridiculous Carly should and would have noticed Sonny’s issue from the jump. Also, ruining Carly and Carson for this story is stupid. If MB wants a change fine don’t ruin Carly to try and make Nina enjoyable. FYI: story has gone one way too long and not enjoyable.
Please stop this story that has gone on over a year. It makes no sense; Carly has dealt with Sonny’s bipolar in the past she would more than recognize it. Dante should never his dad drink when he was taking the meds, etc Most importantly Sonny, the family guy, would never forgive Nina for keeping him from his kids. Remember what Nina did to Ava regarding Avery? This story is ugh. Keep Carly and Sonny together.

Sonny has been on his meds for years and it has never interfered with his drinking. Dante might have noticed his dad’s symptoms, but thought he was just drunk.
PLEASE put this storyline to rest! It has gone on for too long. There is NO chemistry between Maurice Benard and Cynthia Watros.
Lew, I agree about burying this storyline but then I worry about the NEXT major story he’ll be monopolizing. I can’t believe how disgusting he was to Drew, who has already been betrayed by Sonny, Carly, and Michael after the disastrous Jason switchback. That whole family acts with impunity in a vile, repulsive way and I’m sick of the lot of them. Heck, I’m sick of Wiley, too.

Oh Carrie, what’s next… T-shirts of Wiley with “HANDS OFF! HOLY GRAIL CROSSING” printed on them? The kid’s a spoiled brat who doesn’t stand a chance: a creepy, judgmental dad; a trouble-making drama queen granny; and a self-centered egomaniacal step-grandpa. And that’s just Michael’s side!
Along with a self-centered, delusional maternal grandmother.
and let’s not forget the 666% psychotic biolgical mother… who is going to show up again one of these days. Not sure where she is, but she’s not in Hell…. and we all know she didn’t go to the other place!
I don’t know who come up with the Carly and Drew plan but it’s horrible. They literally make me sick. They act like they’re in high school. I’ve been watching for over 20 years and this is one of the worst plans ever. Carly isn’t even a good actor. Neither is Drew. But, please stop the Carly Drew story line. There disgusting!

General Hospital’s Michael Easton Pens Touching Farewell to Gregory Harrison
Following the on-screen death of his on-screen father, Gregory Chase played by Gregory Harrison, longtime soap vet, Michael Easton (Finn, GH) shared his feelings on a touching Instagram post.
Easton summed up getting to know Gregory Harrison, and to play emotional scenes with him for the last three years. In story, Gregory succumbed to ALS, a disease in which there is no cure.
Sharing several photos of himself with Harrison. Easton expressed, “Gregory Harrison. One of the finest actors I’ve ever had the privilege of working with and an even better human being. I learned so much from you, my friend, and it was an absolute honor to get to share a stage with you these past three years. Your talent, grace and powerful presence will be greatly missed around the studio. @gnhsurf @generalhospitalabc #gh #fathersandsons”

In addition, Josh Swickard (Chase), Harrison’s other on-screen son told Soap Opera Digest on Gregory’s exit, “Sometimes when you’re working on a show like this and someone plays your dad, it spills over. He really felt like a father figure to me in so many ways. Still does. He’s such a good human being. He’s been around the block in life, in Hollywood, and then some, and he’s just a wealth of knowledge. And he’s a humble human being.”

Fans of GH caught on the Monday, May 20th episode some very heart-tugging scenes between Gregory and Finn, where they each tell the other how proud they are to have been each others father and son.

Lane Davies on Possibility of Extending His General Hospital Run: “I Would Be Totally Open”
This week, viewers are catching the re-teaming of Lane Davies and Nancy Lee Grahn for the second time on General Hospital and the third time in their careers given their storied history as Santa Barbara’s Mason Capwell and Julia Wainright.
Previously, Nancy and Lane played opposite each other and shares scenes as Dr. Cameron Lewis and Alexis Davis back in 2002 on the ABC daytime drama series. Now in 2024, Davies takes on the role of Fergus Byrne, the brother of the late Neil Byrne, as Alexis tries to get her law license reinstated.
Speaking with TV Insider on his recent return to GH, Davies shared, “I know Nancy was wanting to work with me again. I ran into (former GH head writer) Patrick Mulcahey at (Santa Barbara co-creator) Bridget Dobson’s funeral and we had a lovely lunch together and a lovely visit and I think it was just the synergy of all those things coming together that did it. Patrick saw me and realized that I hadn’t completely deteriorated over the years and thought, ‘Well, this would be fun.”’

Lane also shared he isn’t closing the door for more episodes of General Hospital down the line were the powers-that-be to keep Fergus on the canvas.
The popular actor expressed,,”I would be totally open, but that’s all up to the writers and fans and producers and network people and I’m kind of out of that loop. But if it happens, grand.”

Gregory Harrison Wraps His Run on General Hospital
Gregory Harrison, who has played Gregory Chase on General Hospital, has left the series. As viewers saw, on the May 20th episode Gregory remembers his life, then seemingly went to asleep.
However, on today’s May 21st episode, is it revealed Gregory, who suffered from ALS, passed away in his sleep. Harrison brought with him extensive television and movie credits from Trapper John M.D., Falcon Crest and more before coming to GH.
Harrison joined the ABC daytime drama series in a recurring capacity back in November 2020 and signed a contract back in June of 2022. A rep for the show confirmed to Soap Opera Digest that Gregory’s exit was storyline-dictated.

In story, Gregory Chase was the estranged father to Finn (Michael Easton), as they had a complicated past. He also had a younger son Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard). Gregory was also the grandfather to Violet (Jophielle Love). One of his last wishes was to see Chase and Brook Lynn (Amanda Set tie the knot.
Over the past few months before the character’s demise, he became close with Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) and Tracy (Jane Elliot).
The death of Gregory Chase will certainly rock Finn and Chase’s world.
