Emme Rylan Addresses and Clarifies Possibility of a Return to General Hospital

Photo: JPI

General Hospital viewers recently watched scenes where Charlotte (Scarlett Fernandez) and Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) came to visit a comatose Lulu in her hospital room on the ABC daytime drama series. The character of Lulu Spencer Falconeri has been in a coma since December of 2020 when the soap decided to write-off the character last played by Emme Rylan.

With so much chatter if the show is finally going to awaken Lulu and thus bring back Rylan to the role of Luke and Laura’s daughter, the actress took to her Instagram Story this week and shared a series of updates and then clarifications.

First, Emme expressed: “I am getting approximately one million messages asking if Lulu is waking up and… I don’t want to ruin storyline ever. I am very much into the integrity of storylines whether I’m in them or not. So I’ve been putting it off and putting it off and putting off talking. Because I’m getting so many messages! I don’t know what to say!”

She then added, “So basically, the bottom line, no matter what the internet says, I have made it very clear to GH that I am always available to play Lulu should she ever want to wake up. It is my understanding that when they choose to wake her up, they would be calling me. That could always change. Who knows? But that is my understanding. When they want to wake her up, they will call me. That’s as much as I know and I have not heard from them.”

After her original stories on the subject, Rylan came back on to her IG to share that she was not trying to ‘fuel a fire.’ She was just trying not to answer any fans questions directly, if Lulu’s health status was a cliffhanger on the show, as she did not want to ruin anything for the viewers. Rylan noted that she loved everyone and thanked then for their support.

Share your thoughts below: should GH wake-up Lulu sooner than later and have Emme reprise the part? Let us know.

Nooooo
Come back to y n r!!!
We need you back as Abby.
The real Abby would be working at Jabot or Newman, climbing up the corporate ranks as the daughter of big shots like her dad and mom, putting big sis Victoria in her place and fight for her marriage with Chance etc …
The current Abby is sweet but that’s as far as it goes.

That’s because the current Abby does what the script calls for. Even if emme came back she’d still be doing what the current Abby is doing

This is true…they have to follow the script

Maybe, Meme—but, at least, Emme would not tower over “Devon”.

By “calling her”, it might just be a courtesy call to let her know Julie Berman or another actress will be playing Lulu when they decide to have her awaken.

If Julie came back – well, that would be great!!

Julie has small children. She isn’t coming back anytime soon.

Many daytime actresses have worked while having young children. The current shooting schedule has a lot more breaks than I’m the 90s. It allows more time to raise children than primetime or film.

So does Emme Rylan, why would you say she won’t come back?

Emme never fit the role of Lulu for me. I miss Julie Berman in the role, but if she can’t return, then how about… Martha Madison? She’s no stranger to GH, and she’s exiting DAYS soon. I think she would be a great fit for Lulu, the character is similar enough to Belle and I think she would play off Genie Francis wonderfully.

@ Jimmy,

I agree, I could never get on board with Emme Rylan as Lulu. I always tend to give recasts a chance, but you said “Emme never fit the role”… I LOVED Julie Berman! LOVED her.
I think it’s time for a Lulu recast. I LOVE Martha Madison however, I think it would be awkward for both Kristen Storms and Martha Madison to be in scenes together. I am not sure how that would be. I like Kristen Storms as Belle, yet Martha Madison is and will always be Belle Black for me. I am glad she is stepping away. DAYS use Belle/Marha when need be. Also, wasn’t Martha Madison a temporary recast for Elizabeth Webber (a long time ago)?

Anyways, I am not sure about Martha as Nu-Lulu. I am undecided. Though, her look is close to Anthony Geary. I think GH can find a newcomer to soaps to play Lulu. The Casting is usually spot-on (except with the current Molly recasts.)

I don’t believe Emme is being called back to play Lulu. Her portrayal was ho-hum and at times banal.

I would like to see a bad-ass newcomer take on the role or a fabulous soap star and want a Dante and Lulu reunion. Not a fan of Dante & Sam.

Bring Lulu home GH! It’s time.

Me either

Wake her up!!!

I’ve always thought and felt the same way! When they brought her on, I wasn’t watching Lulu… she just isn’t the right fit to play her.

I love Emme Rayn I think she did an amazing Lulu. I hope they bring her and Steve Burton back..

I can’t stand Stand Steve Burton

He was like the heart of gh for a long time.

The mob enforcer was not the heart of GH. Steve Hardy, Lila Quartermaine, Robin Scorpio and Laura Collins deserve that title.

One thing is for certain….

No character introduced after February 2012 will ever be considered “the heart of GH”

If the show miraculously lasts 20 more years, Leo has an outside chance of being its heart. Otherwise, certainly not any of the Corinthos offspring.

Michael is a Corinthos, a Quartermaine, and a Spencer. So that’s some solid qualifications. Maybe if they could write him a storyline that doesn’t revolve around a sick or dying girlfriend/wife. Or their crazy mothers.

I agree. No offense to Emme, she is a talented actress & I remember that she did good work on Guilding Light way back when, but as she played Lulu, I kept imagining Julie Berman in scenes & how she’d play them even though it was Julie’s decision to exit the show. Julie’s Lulu conveyed more depth in my opinion. She was perfect casting for Luke & Laura’s daughter down to even her whole look. Martha Madison would be a good choice as well.

Yes it’s time to wake her up now

Emme Rylan needs to wake up & come home, before Dante & Sam end up married.

Want Emme Rylan back as Lulu People always want 2 change certain characters Not caring what anybody else thinks of her she was great call her back sometime soon

GH needs you back Lulu (Emme)!

Yes I think that Emme Rylan should reprise the part of LuLu.

Please let’s get a petition to get her back to GH, she can’t go back to y&r they won’t get rid of m.o. she’s doing a good job and she literally has made lulu hers ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Speaking of the y and r, wish the old Summer Newman would come back

ooohhh dear lordy no no no no, not her again..

Horrible! Please no no no never bring back Emme/Lulu back..

Suffering new Trina and Drew is overkill of bad bad bad- nuff is nuff …

So… you hate the Trina & Drew recasts… but you trust the same people who hired them to find a new Lulu?

Yes I would live here back on GH

Don’t want her back. What happens to Sam then. You are breaking up a couple that just came together.

This couple doesn’t belong together, they are just place holders until their real partners are backl

Sam and Jason were a big dud when Burton came back to reclaim the role. The lack of passion was obvious on the screen. Monaco seems almost as vibrant DZ as she did when paired with Billy Miller.

Sam and Dante have great chemistry. Don’t mess with this couple. I swear sometimes I think they are a real life couple in love. Lulu was whiny and entitled

How many “real life couples” do you know who share two siblings…. but those siblings aren’t related to each other?

How many “real life couples” do you know where the woman has also been with the man’s father & uncle?

Just sayin…

The also were individually romantically tied to the Spencer siblings (Dante/Lulu and Sam/Lucky).

You’re right. I forgot about that one because it’s hard to remember that Greg Vaughn’s character was supposed to be Lucky Spencer since he was a totally different person than Jonathan Jackson’s version.

Would love for her return. It would be interesting now that Dante is involved with Sam! Also it’s about time for Jason to return. They never should have let him leave!! He’s part of the bones of the show!!!

I agree. Jason is part of the fabric of life in Port Charles. He’s an OG and a big part of 2 families. He is needed.

Love you, Emme—You sre such a lady with finesse—No regrettable words escape your mouth. So classy—Looking forward to your anticipated return—Wake up, Lulu!!❤️

Sorry Celia, don’t see her the way you do. Always saw her as pesky, in your face, pain in the neck. Maxie always trying to hold her back from some crazy scheme after another.

Definitely bring Emme back as Lulu! There’s so much story to be told. I loved her in that role! The sooner, the better.

Can plz wake up LuLu it’s time!!

Bring her back. But PLEASE get rid of Gladys.

If Jason was home he would have already dealt with Glydys.

Yes they need to bring Lulu back asap!! And Emme need to play her!!

MY last comment got dropped for some reason as I was erased or dropped. All I wanted to say is I love Emme Rylan and I love her integrity to keep the storyline private, whether ABC notifies her or not. She is a wonderful actress and I pray they bring her back..

We miss you so much

Bear in mind that when a patient has been in a coma for 5 years, their muscles atrophy, they either lose or gain massive amts of weight, their hair is not cared for and no one puts makeup on them.

I think it’s time to wake up Lulu Emme Rylan is perfect as Lulu. Dante and Sam are not a good fit Lulu needs to be wirh him. Steve Buron as Jason is the man and he should return. Jason and Sam have a great chemistry just as Sonny and Carly Nina is trouble Sonny doesn’t need. When Sonny finds out what Nina did to Carly (and he will sooner than you all think) she is done and that would be great. I have so much more to say but I hold it for now.

This is soap world. Nina was in a coma for 20 years and gave birth to twins. She was in a wheelchair for about a month when she first awoke and made her way to PC.

Bring Rylan back as lulu she was the last person to play her, stop changing around people. Bring the other Kristina & Molly back, these new girls are unwatchable sorry. Bring Steve Burton back as Jason & Ingo back as Jax stop ruining the show. Your going to lose it

There aren’t many guarantees in life, but I’d bet my house that Ingo will never be seen on GH (or any production run by Disney) again.

Kate Mansi is doing a phenomenal job as Kristina. Highly unlikely that we see original recipe Molly (but I wouldn’t bet like Ingo).

I agree I go will never grace a Disney screen again. Remember he spoke racist comments.

Definitely wake up LuLu….

I think GH should bring Emme Rylan back. It’s been a long time now. I think she’s a good actress. Get rid of Gladys!! She’s done enough on GH doing Shasha so wrong and all she cares about is Shasha’s money! She doesn’t even care about Shasha!! Bring Emme Rylan back and get rid of Gladys!

Oh, I agree all she does is create misery for other people so she could have money to gamble. I hope Sony is the one who figure out what Gladys is really doing.

If OG Jason was back he would have already put Gladys on the Super highway out of town.

If Dante (as Sam talked to Dante about & he liked the idea) gave Maxie & the kids Lulu & his place what will Lulu think if she came back & will she move in with them? Then what will happen with the storyline of Sam & Dante? I actually like them together. & possibly grew on the fans (not sure how many, because Lulu has been in a coma for a long time + they don’t show often Dante visiting her or Falicia her mom)

Laura is Lulu’s mom – not Felicia (Maxie’s mom).

I like Sam. I like Dante. They are a okay as a couple but, it feels like waiting for the other shoe to drop.
I want Lulu to come back. I prefer Dante with Lulu.

Lulu returning might bring a soso story- but

Not Emme

..Lulu would 100% need to be recast..

Emmy played the roll of Lulu with excellence bring her back

Yes Yes Lulu should be awaking sooner then later and the roll should be played by Emme, she has been sleeping for 3 years now she needs to be waken up and given her roll back at GH she is a great actress and the best Lulu yet. So please bring her back ASAP.

Dear GH bring Emma back for her daughter. Let Sasha know what they are doing to her please get rid of that dr that is druging Sasha also get rid of Gladys . I really don’t understand why they didn’t do anything for Jackie zeman have a memorial for her all those years she was on GH she deserve ‘a that

The regular writers have been on strike since before JZ’s passing. Bobbie’s passing is likely the start of a major storyline that they want the permanent writers to pen.

It’s no disrespect to Jackie. With the onscreen passing of Britt and the real life and onscreen death of Epiphany, it’s okay that they wait until the right moment. Because of their shooting schedule, it took over 9 months for DAYS to address the death of one of their legends. GH still has some time.

Would love to have Lulu back love her so much Emme is a wonderful actress.

Breaking News

Patrick Mulcahey OUT as General Hospital Co-Head Writer

After various reports surfaced, it has been confirmed that Patrick Mulcahey is out as the co-head writer of General Hospital. This is after a very short tenure of under five months.

Mulcahey was named to the position back in January of 2024 along with longtime GH writer Elizabeth Korte. They replaced the team of Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor, who had been the head scribes of the long-running ABC daytime drama since 2019.

A source informed Soap Opera Digest that stories created by the co-head writing team of  Mulcahey/Korte team will air through mid-summer. However they added “There will be more news to share at a later date as to the composition of the new writing team.”

In addition, eagle-eyed soap fans have seen that in recent episodes former co-head writer, Chris Van Etten has been credited, as he is reportedly a breakdown writer with the show.

Soap Opera Network is reporting that Korte has assumed the head writing duties solely on her own at the moment, while Buzz blog initially reported Mulcahey’s exit.

We will have more on the GH writing team evolution in the days ahead.
