This week has been an unprecedented week for CBS Daytime and in particular for The Young and the Restless!   For 1,248 consecutive weeks, or 24 years, Y&R has been the number one daytime drama, according to the Nielsen live plus same day ratings. Y&R began its stay in the top slot way back on December 26th, 1988!

In addition, The Young and the Restless has also been #1 in women 25-54  key demo for 302 of the past 303 weeks and first in women 18-49 for 297 weeks out of the last 298!

Now as for the entire CBS Daytime lineup, it has also now been the #1 network for daytime programming for over 26 consecutive years beginning with the 1986-1987 season.

So, what do you think of Y&R’s staying power at number one?   Do you think it will ever be eclipsed?  Is CBS Daytime with Y&R. B&B, The Talk, The Price Is Right and Let’s Make A Deal your daily destination?  Let us know!

I’ve stopped watching and I doubt I’m the only one. MAB was an unmitigated disaster and Jill Farren Phelps is even worse, something I didn’t think possible.

It’s the last years of All My Children all over again.

Y&R can only stay number one under this current regime if the tv is turned on to the show in prisons and waiting rooms across the country, without giving people the option of turning it off.

Replacing MAB was imperative. Replacing her with Phelps was a disaster.

Congrats Y&R!

Congrats to Y&R. I have been watching since the beginning, warts and all. I am liking the new sets, new music, and other changes that are happening. Can’t go a day without watching. I am still addicted after all these years and I am 55! Keep up the wonderful work!

I am with you luart- I like this soap and I don’t understand why some people think it is so bad, but I guess we all have our different tastes. I thought the recent Newman party at the Penthouse was a hoot. I didn’t even mind some of MAB stuff- like when Billy bought a baby for Vicky and it was Lucy- what I didn’t like was they revealed it too soon. Lucy should have been a teenager before the secret came out- which on this show would have only been a year or two wait for us viewers. Has the show seen better days, probably, but truth be told I forgotten more I remember- for me it is about now and right now I like what I’m seeing.

Y&R is the only thing I watch (via DVR) of CBS’s daytime line-up. And there are days that I either skip watching or fast forward through the show. Sharon needs to be sent off to the countryside for a rest, the character is just weary. Cain and Lily have to be two of the most snooze-worthy characters ever created. Don’t even start about Victor. Arrogant, insufferable, holier-than-thou, pig-headed can only begin to describe him. We know where Jack’s story is going….pill heaven. Trucker is useless.

It would be interesting to see Kevin & Chloe actually be reduced to living in Billy’s trailer and together making their way back. Or are we going to have yet another Kevin as criminal plots?

I doubt Jess Walton is back for the long haul…..do something with her character while you have the chance!

Michelle Stafford is such a powerhouse. But she needs a break too from the man-go-round. Leave her relationship with Jack platonic.

Michael Muhney is another goldmine. Just pull Adam out of Sharon’s soul sucking orbit.

To answer THIS question: “Is CBS Daytime with Y&R. B&B, The Talk, The Price Is Right and Let’s Make A Deal your daily destination?”

I am a soap girl – that’s it. I don’t watch TPIR (though I used to) and I never watch THE TALK or anything that comes on after that. I have two little ones and, in one of the BEST decisions ever, we got rid of Directv last January. We rely on an HD antenna. When the wind is right for the livingroom , I get CBS to come in and I can watch live otherwise my day consists of Netflix streaming for the boys and whatever PBS channels come in. I have to Tivo my shows on the bedroom TV and watch when the kids go to bed. I watch all the soaps except DAYS.

I don’t know what Y&Rs chances are for remaining number one. It would be nice to have a crystal ball to see into the futures of ALL the soaps to see whether they will even be here in five years, but I do not have that luxury. So I don’t think ratings matter at all as long as the networks continue to do what they want without a care for the fans of these shows. 🙁

Y&R is as exciting as watching paint dry these days. It’s a shell of what it once was in the first half of its 39 years and its audience is a fraction of what it was 24 years ago. In 1988, the lowest rated daytime soap probably had at least as many viewers as Y&R does now.

Considering that there are only 3 other soaps on now to compete with, it’s not that big of an accomplishment anymore. This “milestone” is now akin to being the only large tree remaining in a barren forest. To be #1 in the 1960s and 1970s (ATWT was #1 for 20 straight years) when there were around 15-20 soaps on – now THAT’S an accomplishment.

The Y&R will always remain on top no matter how terrible/boring it can be..
It is shown in 32 countries as is B&B, also ..
They are the only soaps shown internationally ..
OLTL and GH both have been better and are better than Y&R n BB, but they are not shown internationally..
It is impossible for a soap to remain #1 for 24 yrs without something being different and that is- they are shown internationally ..

I don’t see how being shown internationally affects the ratings in the States? I thought you guys have something called Nielson ratings, where about 5000 people have black boxes and these 5000 household determine ratings. I live in Canada and we had all the soaps here AMC, OLTL, GH, ATWT, GL, etc. and shows that are popular here and had great ratings aren’t always the same as the States, but I never known an American network saying ” lets keep this show on the air because it is big in Canada”. So I don’t think international appeal has anything to do with how successful a show is in your own country. You guys are the ones who have all the power. If soaps are cancelled in your country, there will be cancelled in ours as well.

a show being successful internationally might give you bragging rights but considering it would put you in the company of Baywatch, i wouldn’t do much bragging.

I wonder- in the next couple of years, when there likely will be only 2 or 3 soaps left, will they still keep congratulating Y&R for being #1? LOL.

Spin is spin- it is like pictures that win an Oscar for best make up promote the film as an Academy Award winning film- they aren’t lying, but they aren’t exactly telling the whole truth either. Even if this was the last soap on the air they would promote is as the “one and only daytime drama to watch”. Sometimes advertising is hoot.

This article, and accomanying national exposure, prove what I’ve always said about the remarkable reign of Y&R at the top of the soap heap; it is the template for all others. The soaps that aren’t on CBS should really take a close look.

Love Y&R. It is the reason their is still a soapopera genre left.

I can only talk about Y&R by comparing it to is sister soap B&B. First, I find that CBS soaps focus too much on weddings and breaking up couples; we know B&B loves triangles. Y&R has better writers and when the characters are not bed hopping, at least we get murder mysteries, business takeovers, romance, lust, and medical issues, etc. The twists in storylines make you take notice and on occasion, you get surprises. Y&R does focus on the Newman family, but you get fresh faces introduced to the family and it keeps the soap growing. No such thing on B&B. B&B focuses on one family the Logans, and you get nothing but sleaze. I am so glad they bought Abby back. A good soap needs the veterans, their adult children and aging grandchildren to survive the different generations of fans. Storylines have to be independent. Summer time used to be the time for the young romances and once fall hit, it was back to the veterans. But at some point you have to develop the next generation, as the veterans will someday retire or worse. What do you do? After Victor, Nikki, Catherine, and Jack, etc. Y&R has Nick, Sharon, Phyllis, Vicki and Billy, etc., to take them thru the next set of viewers. What do we have on B&B? We got sleasy Rick and a new man for Brooke. C’mon!

I truly believe that CBS should fold B&B into Y&R. Tucker McCall can buy Forrester Creations and run it from Genoa city. Victor was lost in LA for a while, he could take over FC. Might be a little awkward having $Bill back on Y&R as another character, but we’ll get used to it. Just take the better actors and call it a day. B&B is no Y&R and we don’t understand why. And as we speak, the triangle is warming up again!

I agree that they have to get the younger generation established in order to be the vets of tomorrow. Victoria, Nicholas, Sharon, Lauren, Billy, all these characters and more started in a teen story line. My objection was they aged Summer and Fen too quickly and too much- I think their story line of cyberbullying would have worked in the 11-13 age range. There are many talented young actors- but instead they hired people in their twenties to play 16 because they don’t have to provided a teacher and school on set. I wouldn’t want to merge B&B and Y&R together- character cross overs are okay, but as you pointed out they are two very different soaps with different styles. If one or the other got cancelled I’m sure they would find a way to incorporate some the characters of one into the other like ABC did, but merging together- I don’t think it will happen.

(INTERVIEW) B&B’s Annika Noelle Reveals Her Lead Actress Emmy-Nominated Scenes, and the Ups and Downs of a Tough Year

When the nominees were announced last week for the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards, six women wound up in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category and that included The Bold and the Beautiful’s Annika Noelle (Hope Logan) who had quite the heavy on-screen story.

For months, Hope initially tried to hold her marriage to Liam (Scott Clifton) together, gave into her passion for Thomas (Matthew Atkinson), and became a stronger more independent woman in the process. Noelle was previously nominated in 2020 in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category, but this marks her first-time presence in the highly-coveted Lead Actress race.

On Friday, April 26th, The Bold and the Beautiful celebrated their leading 12 nominations, as well as being the show with the most acting nominations going into the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards set to air live on Friday, June 7 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.

Photo: JPI

During the on set celebration, when B&B’s Emmy-nominated executive producer and head writer, Brad Bell, introduced each of the acting nominees, they took a moment to address their colleagues, and for Annika, her speech was touching and emotional. She expressed, “I’m so grateful to Brad Bell for believing in this dark brunette, and allowing me to be a part of this family. And when we say that we’re a family, it’s not just because we get along. It is really because we are here for the majority of the year with each other. I know for a lot of people, 2023, was a difficult year.  The thing about this beautiful show is that it was my constant, and it’s what I could depend on during a tough year. And there are beautiful days like this when you come in and everything in your life is going amazingly. And then, there are days where your world is falling apart. And the crew, honestly, you guys kept me afloat this year and that’s why this is so meaningful to me.”

Photo: MFTV Inc

Annika added, “I don’t think I could have gotten through this year without the love and support from this family. So, thank you for being there for me on days that I needed the strength and you gave that to me. I’m so grateful to my co-stars and who I get to share these beautiful scenes with. I just wanted to say, I appreciate all of you and thank you so much. You all mean more to me than you will ever know.”

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Annika immediately following the Emmy nominee celebration, to her thoughts on this momentous occasion in her professional life and what it means to her personally, plus what did she choose for her scenes when Hope had such, shall we say, a torrid year of story to choose from. Here’s what she shared below.

Photo: JPI

Dare I say, I called this nomination for you? Back on New Year’s Eve, I revealed My “Best Of” Picks for 2023 and I had you as the Best Overall Performance by an Actress for the year, and alongside your fellow nominee, Cynthia Watros (Nina, GH), to boot!

ANNIKA: Thank you for believing in me that I could do it.

How did you to tackle your Emmy-nominated reel and what you were hoping to showcase?

ANNIKA: I was just so grateful to have the story to be able to pick from, and to really try to show the character growth and the arc of everything that happened to Hope Logan in the past year. For me, I really wanted to take the voters on a journey from her really being heavily influence by everyone’s opinions and everyone else’s voices, to her really coming into her own and going, “I don’t care if it’s the right or wrong choice, it’s my choice.”

Photo: JPI

What scenes did you end up submitting the landed you this Lead Actress Emmy nomination?

ANNIKA: I started with this great scene that our producers, Casey Kaspryzk and Rachel Herman actually remembered, where Hope walks in on her mother in her lingerie flirting with Ridge. And they remembered that scene. So, that really launched us off to Hope being kind of in this deep denial of, “I’m nothing like you. I’m not going to follow in your footsteps. I don’t have feelings for Thomas.” Cut to Liam confronting her about watching her give into her desires in Rome. And him saying, “Where were you Hope? At the Colosseum?” and then kind of in a roundabout full circle way, Brooke finding Thomas and Hope in bed together and then Hope really kind of going toe to toe with her mother. Then, ending with her kind of fully coming into her own as a woman and saying, “You wanted a divorce, Liam, here’s your divorce.” I really wanted to show the journey of her finding her own voice and advocating for her own choices and finding that inner strength, basically.

Photo: JPI

Was choosing the reel difficult given you had so much material within the 2023 calendar year of eligibility to consider?

ANNIKA: It was hard to pick and choose. There were a few I ended up leaving out. There was a really beautiful scene with Thomas where she realizes he overheard her kind of talking ill of him. That one was really hard to let go of.  I was also considering another scene with Liam where they actually signed the divorce papers. I’m just so grateful to even be able to have the material to choose from.

Photo: JPI

How did you find out you were nominated?

ANNIKA: Eva Basler, our VP of Communications & Talent Relations, called me and it meant so much to me to get that call from her. I tend to get nervous and have anxiety, so that day I just had to not think about it. So, I was out on a walk with my love, and my dog. We’re just in the middle of a cul-de-sac and my phone starts ringing. And it was the best surprise ever! Then, when I found out that Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke, B&B) got nominated alongside me, I immediately FaceTimed her. It was the funniest thing because she literally picks up and she is wearing a sun visor and sunglasses wrapped up on top of a horse as she’s in the middle of a mountain and in a valley on this beautiful white horse. It was the most picturesque thing.

Photos: ABC, JPI, NBC

I believe you know some of the women you are nominated with, obviously Katherine, but also Tamara Braun (Ava, Days), Finola Hughes, (Anna, GH), Cynthia Watros (Nina, GH) and Michelle Stafford (Phyllis, Y&R). What are your thoughts on these nominees?

ANNIKA: Well first, I’m just so excited to be in this category with the other women. Tamara Braun, who I was nominated with previously in the Supporting Actress category I’m excited that she’s in this category with me. Michelle Stafford, who I see in the hallway all the time, is great, and Finola Hughes, I’m just like obsessed with from afar. I even watched her on Watch What Happens Live!  Cynthia, I hear her work is tremendous, and with Katherine, I’m just really grateful to get to share this with her. To be honored amongst these legends of daytime is amazing. Just to be seen in that way, that means more to me than anything.

Photo: JPI

You mentioned during B&B’s on-set Emmy celebration that this past year was a difficult one for you, and that everyone at the show really helped you through it. What meaning would winning the Emmy hold for you?

ANNIKA: That would be overwhelming. I wouldn’t even know how to describe it – an honor, a privilege, a blessing? It would mean the world to me, especially after this past year. That’s why it’s so significant, because even on the darkest days, the storms passes. You just have to hold on for that brighter day.

So, what did you think about the scenes Annika submitted for Lead Actress? Were they some of your favorite moments from the Emmy season? Share your thoughts via the comment section below.

Marla Adams, The Young and the Restless’ Dina Mergeron, Dies at 85

Marla Adams, best known for portraying matriarch, Dina Abbott Mergeron on CBS’ The Young and the Restless for 37 years, died on April 25, 2024, in Los Angeles. The news came from Y&R’s Director of Media and Talent, Matt Kane.

Throughout her veteran soap opera career, Marla appeared had appeared on Secret Storm (in her other longest running soap role as Bell Clemens from 1988-1974), The Bold and the Beautiful (ex-Beth Logan), Days of our Lives (ex-Dr. Claire McIntyre), Generations (ex- Helen Mullin), General Hospital (ex-Mildred Deal) and Capitol (ex-Myrna Clegg).

However, it was her role as Y&R’s upper crust Dina, who abandoned her children and her marriage to John Abbott (the late Jerry Douglas) that was her most memorable role. Throughout the years, Dina would have several romantic reunions with John, but in 2017, the character returned to Genoa City to reunite with her estranged family. Dina was the on-screen mother to Ashley Abbott (Eileen Davidson), Traci Abbott (Beth Maitland) and Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman).

Photo: JPI

As for Adams, she joined Y&R in 1982, but left the soap three years later her contract expired. She returned to Genoa City for stints in 1991, 1996 and 2008 before being asked by then Y&R head writer-producer Sally Sussman to return in 2017, which would begin the top-rated daytime drama telling the story of Alzheimer’s disease. Through Dina, the show shed light on a person going through the perils of the illness, and how the family copes and tries to come to terms with its fate.

In fact, Marla took home the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Daytime Drama Series in 2021 for her work in the storyline, She had previously been nominated in 2018.

Speaking with Michael Fairman TV, Marla shared on her final scenes on Y&R when Dina passed away and was reunited with John Abbott, “It was heart-wrenching for me.  In the story, Dina died when she went outside and to the front door of the Abbott home.  They did not tell me before-hand, and that’s why it was so wonderful.  I hope they came in for a closeup of that because I had no makeup on, it was beautiful, and then, Dina said, “Oh, John.”  I’ve done everything from movies, to daytime, to nighttime, to Broadway, but that was the iconic moment for me, to do this gig with wonderful, wonderful actors and friends, and to do this particular storyline.

Born in Ocean City, New Jersey, on August 28, 1938, Adams’ love for the stage was ignited after winning the Miss Ocean City and Miss Cape May pageants and finishing as a runner-up in the Miss New Jersey pageant. She also fondly remembered being the Miss Diamond Jubilee Queen during the 1954 celebration of the 75th anniversary of Ocean City’s founding.  A student at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Adams appeared on Broadway in the 1958 production of The Visit at the Morosco Theatre with Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne and starred as June in the 1961 feature film, Splendor in the Grass

Over the span of her decades long career, Adams starred in more than 40 productions including television’s: The Golden Girls, Hart to Hart, The Love Boat, The New Dick Van Dyke ShowHarry OAdam-12Starsky and HutchMarcus Welby, M.D.Barnaby Jones, and the feature film, Beneath the Leaves.

In a statement, Y&R’s current head writer and executive producer, Josh Griffith expressed, “On behalf of the entire company of The Young and the Restless, we send our deepest sympathies to Marla’s family. We’re so grateful and in awe of Marla’s incredible performance as Dina Mergeron as both Marla and Dina made an unforgettable mark on Y&R.
