Tonight, The Writers Guild of America, West and The Writers Guild of America, East held their 2015 award ceremonies simultaneous at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, and the Edison Ballroom in New York.
The WGA Awards are awarded each year to outstanding writing achievements in the categories and fields of feature film, television, radio. on-air promos, and video games.
And, the winner in the Daytime Drama series went to the writing team of ABC’s General Hospital. The award went to the team consisting of: Ron Carlivati, Anna Theresa Cascio, Suzanne Flynn, Kate Hall, Elizabeth Korte, Daniel James O’Connor, Elizabeth Page, Katherine Schock, Scott Sickles, and Chris Van Etten.

You must be pretty easy to please. Most viewers have higher standards of what makes enjoyable entertainment. Besides their major competition was Days? Yeah that tells me all I need to know. Lets check back next year shall we?
Down to four soaps, only two were nominated, 50/50 chance.
They lost last year and when Days won RC berated the WGA for giving the award to scabs. Now I guess they are credible and in good standing.
But forget any of that, lets congratulate the writers because this validates them and invalidates any of the criticism. Right?
There are no major holes anymore, no more inconsistencies, no more dialogue that contradicts or characters mind numbingly dumbed down to advance plot. None of it exists anymore. It must not exist because they got this award.
I’m going to assume that this award works like others for TV writing, an episode or two are submitted. That makes sense. If you watch one or two episodes you will miss most of the problems on GH. The main problem is the overall narrative and storytelling. With one episode, you don’t see the contradictions and inconsistencies of a serial that is on everyday and tells stories over an extended period of time.
Well they didn’t win a WGA last year and weren’t even nominated for an Emmy and that didn’t prompt any improvements. So now they’ve won something, so we can really be assured that nothing will improve.
The ratings are good, comparatively speaking (no soap’s ratings are really good any more, but GH’s have shown some growth in the last couple of years). That, more than any awards that might be won or lost, is what will ultimately determine whether anything changes or not.
I love you !! You ve nailed it all. But most are too afraid to speak up in fear that Gh will get cancelled. So they continue to feed the egos and suffer in silence.

It is the most modern soap and is not in the traditional soap box..
The writing is excellent for this era, 21st century media..
I can see why Y&R was not even nominated it has not come into the 21st century and Y&R could bore the bejesus out of a statute and it was very noticeable (boring) and did not even get a nomination..

If you bothered to actually read the comments that are posted about the writing, you would clearly see that the criticisms are about the quality of the writing and it is not about emotion or people’s favorites. You can like the show and the writing all you want. You can come up with some rationalization about being modern and 21st century, the bottom line is the writing is consistently terrible.
There shouldn’t even be a WGA category for daytime drama if it is going to be judged on one or two episodes. What determines good writing, books, movies or even episodic TV, is a coherent, logical and cohesive narrative. A story that has a beginning, a middle and an end that comes together and makes sense.
Judging one or two or even ten episodes of a daytime serial that tells stories over a period of months is ridiculous and shows that this award has no real credibility. Even if GH was well written, they couldn’t determine that because they don’t have all the pieces to render that judgment; the beginning, the middle and the end.
On what evidence are you basing your assertion that “the WGA does not do that. They judge on the merits of the writing”? That may be the intention, but I’ve yet to see a show biz award–Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, WGA, whatever–in which that’s actually what happens.
I have no beef with GH’s winning. My own vote would be “none of the above” if I had to pick a winner for Best-Written Soap, but if that wasn’t allowed and I was forced to pick one, GH would get my vote, with significant reservations. But thinking that the WGA’s decision was based strictly on the merits strikes me as very naive.
I also take issue with your statement “Soap fans judge on emotions, on their favorites, on their love for their soap.” While that may be true of some soap fans, or even many soap fans, it’s by no means true of all. Some of us are fans of the genre, rather than any particular soap, and many of us who have been around for a while have watched quite a few different soaps during our time, and we’re quite capable of evaluating what we see with more objectivity than you give us credit for. And we’re certainly better positioned to judge than “judges” who base an award on a few random episodes.
AJQ/GH50, the real bottom line is your statement that the writing is terrible is your opinion, it’s not a fact. You come on here and make these comments, and come off with this attitude like because you say it, that automatically makes it fact. You’re just one person on here sharing an opinion just the rest of us.
And based on your logic, I guess there shouldn’t be Emmy Awards either, because they’re judging based on one or two episodes of a particular actor or show, and not an entire year of shows. But I guess in your world, the awards are only fair and accurate when GH doesn’t win anything.
Dan, to point out that someone giving their opinion is them giving their opinion only shows me that the “opinion” must be pretty relevant and resonate too soundly. I think the majority of adults realize that comments in a comments section are opinions. Again, it just might be that my opinions come off as sounding like fact because there is so much truth in them. It seems to me that many other people here post their opinions and seem confident in those opinions, yet you say that I have an attitude and think because I say it, it is automatically a fact? I find that interesting.
If I’m wrong, why don’t you give examples as to why I am? Why don’t you explain why the writing is good? Why don’t you give examples of why I am wrong.
As for your last bit about my thinking that there shouldn’t be Emmy awards and that according to my thinking awards are only fair if GH doesn’t win anything, again, pretty funny how you draw that conclusion. Instead of just throwing that out there to try and discredit my opinion, which you didn’t, why not make the point to why I am wrong? Why not make the point that you can properly judge the writing on a serial that tells a story over an extended period of time with one or two episodes? Would we judge a 120 page movie script on five or six pages? Would we judge a 300 page book on a chapter? No, because it is about the complete narrative. It is about telling a story, intelligently and coherently from beginning, middle to end. Something that you can’t do with a soap. Something you can do with other TV shows, like Law and Order where in the course of one episode a murder is discovered at the beginning, the crime is investigated in the middle and the crime is solved at the end.
Acting for me is different, you can gauge a performance in a episode or two, because it is a performance. It is easier to judge acting ability through a few scenes. Writing is about the story, it is about the narrative.
If the writing award is supposed to just be about how scenes are written, about dialogue etc, then the process is appropriate. But getting back to my original point that I made at the top, that would then make sense for GH to win because the major issues with the writing, the holes, inconsistencies and contradictions that we see over time, would not be apparent.
Anyway Dan, hope that clears things up. I’m intrigued as to why you are so offended by well thought out criticism of the show? I have to wonder why you care so much.
And please tell us why you think the writing is so good and also, please make sure to point out to those who post positive comments and defend the show, that it is only their opinions and not fact.
Dan, I don’t think it’s subjective to state that GH lacks a basic stroyboard. There’s no introduction, no rising action, no climax and certainly no resolution (ending).
The majority seems to feel the writing is very poor and after awhile it seems someone needs to sit and take note. Even the most loyal and ardent fans become disenchanted with the direction GH has taken. And despite what Su000 says, you cannot continue to blame the viewer for not “getting it” or for “taking it all too seriously.” After awhile the writer has to take responsibility for the disenchanted franchise.
I wish Ron was speechless. When he accepted the award he made some defensive sarcastic remark.
He said, “Writers complain about writing 36 episodes a year, try writing 250 a year.” While he might have a valid point, that was neither the time or place to make such a remark.
He was being lauded and rewarded for his writing endeavors and he uses that time to go on the defense. He’s the Gene Simmons of daytime.
Ron’s his own worst enemy, Harry. I fully believe he’d get far less withering criticism of the problems with his writing if he were more gracious and less confrontational in general.
On that particular remark, I can see ways of saying that (tone of voice, etc.), that wouldn’t be obnoxious. Why is it that I just don’t think he chose one of those?

I’ve got mixed feelings. Always want to congratulate the winners because it takes a lot of hard work and creativity to take the award, especially daytime drama with it’s new scripts everyday. And happy they even have an award for daytime. But I guess they don’t take viewer comments into account because they haven’t been very complimentary about the Fluke story for a lot of us. Then there are only four soaps, so not as much competition. Wonder why Y&R and B&B didn’t submit? Not saying the winner would have been different, but would have liked to see them represented. And whether I’m a GH fan or not, there is a reason Y&R still ranks #1 in ratings.

I really wish the soap media would actually call tptb out on their stories. Instead we get unwarranted praise for absolute drivel. Come MF you can’t actually think this writing team is praiseworthy. Ugh.
Why not? He’s been awarding this team Best Soap and Best Writing every year for at least 5 straight years for his end of the year “best and worst” list. He’s as big a worshiper as Carvilati is of himself…..and that’s saying something!

Don’t know the rules, but certainly only two or three episodes were selected for consideration. With that in mind, this ‘win’ most likely does not reflect what the viewer is subjected to daily. Cause personally, with this writing team, I fully expect seeing KAPOW and ZOINK coming across the scenes at any moment. (It worked for Batman!)

I’m not sure what show all the complainers are watching, I’ve been enjoying GH more these past few years than I have in many years. They have the ratings up almost 1 million viewers from where they were when Phelps and Guza were let go. They must be doing something right. Keep up the great work, GH!

Most of these award shows are based on one episode or two so without knowing which episodes both shows submitted it is hard for me to judge which was the better written. The day to day stuff might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there have been episodes when the writing has been very good–not the plot but the dialogue stuff. So I would be curious to know what episode they won with– whatever we might think of the process these award shows are based on, they were rewarded for their work; it is a personal achievement that in long term will mean nothing to the success or failure of the show and in a year’s time no one but those who won will remember it, so they should be allowed to enjoy their moment in the sun.

So really the deal is whatever most of you think–on this board and others–GH writers won a coveted WGA award. They were judged by their peers and they won–period. Congratulations are in order

If so many of you think the writing is so horrible–why are you watching? Do you hate-watch?
It’s obvious by the award and the ratings Ron and his team aren’t going anywhere. So if you HATE this team so much–if you think GH is just horrible, do your blood pressure a favor and watch something else.
The show isn’t going to change because you don’t like it. MORE people (ratings) like it now than before. It’s not perfect & there are certainly head-shaking things that go on–but for this level of vitriol–I’m just astounded.

I agree with this assessment. I see problems, sometimes big ones. I also see some very good stuff, and I can actually watch full episodes and watch the show for long stretches (weeks at a time), neither of which I could do while JFP and Guza/Wolf were in charge–I would either turn off an episode 10 minutes in or I would watch for two or three days and then realize I just couldn’t keep watching and needed a break (a lo-o-o-o-o-o-o-ng break).
But the rest of the world seems to be in absolute-love (blind to the problems) or absolute-hate (blind to the good things) mode. I don’t get it.
Regarding the absolute-hate group, I do get that RC’s fairly obnoxious persona does not help one bit. But on this particular award, who exactly do people think SHOULD have gotten it? If “none of the above” (my personal choice) isn’t an option and somebody has to get the award, who? I certainly don’t think it should have been Y&R (an absolute mess for most of the year) or B&B (does what it does very well and with great consistency, but it doesn’t exactly aim high); I haven’t watched enough of DAYS lately to form an opinion, but judging from comments on here, regular viewers of that show have had some serious problems with the writing as well. In terms of sustained quality across an entire year, I don’t think any of the four shows qualifies for a writing award. At least GH gave us a number of very good moments (amidst, yes, some absolutely head-shaking things).
Maybe it’s that it comes close enough to show people what it could be like if TOTB would just put more effort into certain areas (use of vets, cutting down on the camp quotient, certain kinds of plausibility/continuity) and that makes it harder to forgive. I don’t know. Like you, Lucy D., I’m pretty baffled when I see the level of vitriol, however.
See? I don’t think there is an absolute hate group here. It’s basic human nature to dwell on the negative rather than the positive.
If a waiter serves one hundred people in one day and only one of those people is rude and cantankerous, that waiter is going to complain about that one customer while forgetting to mention how lovely the other people are.
I think if there is an absolute hate group they aren’t watching at all, and therefore, aren’t posting here. I do think people should be afforded the right to complain without being called a hater. It’s just plain silly and kind of immature.
I watch once or twice a week. I have loved GH for about thirty five years now and so when they drop the ball I am going to point it out. That doesn’t make me a hater. In fact, I think it means quite the opposite.
Thanks for your thoughtful reply. It’s disappointing as a fan when you sign on to a board to discuss and dish on what MAY be. I come here to talk about characters I like or don’t. Or things I hope will or won’t happen.

What I do like is intelligent writing and this team simply doesn’t have it. I’m not sure what this team is being rewarded for? When RC has to clarify his storylines on Twitter that should tell you something. Someone said it best when they said “I’m not 12, I need a lot more to be entertained. ”
Finally, if the media press would actually call GH out on the inconsistant writing they could earn my respect. Perhaps if RC could receive constructive criticism, he could earn my respect.

Cheers to GH! I actually arrange afternoon schedule as possible to view it….HOWEVER, bring some of old great Luke/Scorpio type humor back into it ,which reason I first got hooked. Hate new “Luke” character and that scenario, tho interested to see how explain “Luke” character tormenting another in basement if both same? So enjoy GH, but even more when had more subtle but so enjoyable touches of humor.

Show is wonderful, actually often schedule my day around it, but long for old type humor interactions such as Luke/Scorpio which truly first hooked me so many years ago….and truly interest waning a bit w/o that engaging humor element now. And HATE this however manipulated version of Luke. Will keep tuning in or perhaps more often recording now, to keep up, but hey bring OUR Luke back soon! :-))

General Hospital has had the best storylines all year. Days has been horrifically awful – YR is repetitive – same stories over and over and over and over. Nothing original. Congrats to GH and its fabulous cast, crew, writers and directors!
hard to judge without knowing what episode the team submitted, HOWEVER: this is an award handed out by fellow writers, you know, people who write screenplays FOR. A. LIVING, and not people whose writing is limited to shopping lists and moaning on soap blogs. disagreeing is one thing, quite another is being completely disrespectful of professionals. how would you feel if someone who’s never done your job came and told you that you don’t know how to do it? whose judgement do you think holds more weight?
I do not understand comments like yours, GB. I do not understand why long time and loyal viewers cannot express their dissatisfaction with the writing without being called haters.
WE as viewers, DO get to judge the writing of the show just as a Starbucks’ customer gets to judge the quality of their double latte with enough froth to make it aesthetically pleasing but not too much as to give one a mustache. Moreover, most of us have jobs which are not served up as public fodder therefore your comparison is moot. Ron cannot come into, for example, a paper manufacturing office and complain to the office secretary that he doesn’t care for her TBS reports. And I take umbrage with your suggestion that we are in no position to judge because we are not writers. Please consider the following points: 1. Have you read the posts here? Most of the commentators are intelligent and well educated. 2. You don’t know that none of us write for a living –that is rather presumptuous on your part 3. And finally, even if we do not have a secondary education or even if we are not professional writers, we know good storytelling when we see it so for you to presume otherwise is rather disrespectful.
The Fluke debacle has taken its toll and people GET to feel disenchanted. That sense of disenchantment is only exasperated by the writing team winning an award for writing.
I just wish people could voice their disappointment without being called “haters’ and looked upon as the dingo who took the baby.
I should hope the viewer’s voice is heard loud & clear. They are the consumer after all. GH is a product being sold. Awards are nice but if the consumer doesn’t like the product then what? Anyone who minimalizes the weight of the viewer might as well get out of the entertainment industry altogether.
I would like to make it clear my “exactly” was to GB’s post.
As someone who makes a living writing (not TV or movies) I would like to point out that writing is a skill and just because you can compose “an intelligent” post on a board doesn’t mean you can write.
And while Harry, it would be nice to say the commenters are expressing “disappointment” if you read most of the posts, people are just disappointed, they’re angry. And I’m mystified why people who are so mad at Ron & the writers continue to watch–especially since the ratings are up which means Ron & Co. are satisfying most consumers–just not the ones here.
Actually if you follow the ratings they are breaking even. GH isn’t gaining viewers, it’s just trading them out. You can see that in the week to week and the yearly numbers. They gain 100k one week then turn around and lose +100k the next. Some weeks they gain 300k over last year then turn around and lose that many over the following weeks. The ratings are also a best guess. Nielsen doesn’t poll every household therefore they can’t give an accurate picture of the entire viewing audience. When there’s a Nielsen box in every household then I’ll put stock in those ratings. Until then it’s just an estimate.

People REALLY need to get out on social media more and actually SEE what’s being said about GH. It’s not good. And the voices are getting fewer and fewer. Many have given up. There were high hopes that this regime could turn the show around. I for one was not deluded for very long. Between the utter lack of respect for what’s come before and the atrocious behavior of Ron himself on Twitter I’ve thrown in the towel. This isn’t GH. Not sure exactly what it is but I do know I’m not interested in watching any of it. I read comments here & there and I might skim through a spoiler or two but rush home to watch it every day? That hasn’t happened in a very long time. Viewers don’t care what “panels” think of a show. They watch for the enjoyment. Awards mean squat to the average viewer. So GH can win every single award there is out there. It doesn’t mean that it’s a good show or that viewers are compelled to watch. Again, get out there and actually read what’s being said. You might be surprised how many people are NOT happy with the show.

Lane Davies Joins the Cast of General Hospital Setting up a ‘Santa Barbara’ Reunion with Nancy Lee Grahn

Some very intriguing casting news out of General Hospital. The ABC daytime drama has cast former Santa Barbara favorite, Lane Davies (ex-Mason Capwell), in the role of Fergus Byrne, an attorney who crosses paths with Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn).
According to TV Insider, Davies will make debut the week of May 22nd. As soap fans know, together with the aforementioned Grahn, they created the Santa Barbara supercouple of Mason and Julia Wainwright. Davies portrayed Mason Capwell family from 1984 through 1989.
Interestingly enough, this isn’t the first time in Port Charles for Lane. From 2002-2004 he played Dr. Cameron Lewis and also shared on-screen story with Grahn. At that time Davies, played Xander Smith’s father.

GH fans are wondering about the last name of Davies new character, “Byrne”. If you recall, Alexis got herself involved with therapist Dr. Neil Byrne, who died when Harmony broke into Alexis‘ house and killed Neil by injecting him with opioids.

Taking to her Instagram, Grahn shared her excitement at the upcoming on-screen reunion with Davies, “It never gets old. We do 😂…. but it doesn’t 😍. Lookin’ forward to another romp.”

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Nikolas Gets an Earful from Ava About Sonny and His Meds; Nina and Drew Can’t Seem to Resist Each Other

Ava (Maura West) seems to feel she has a confidante in a jailed Nikolas (Adam Huss) on the Monday, April 29th episode of General Hospital. In story, Ava heads to Pentonville to visit her ex-husband before he is set to get transferred out of state.
When discussing her living relationship with Sonny (Maurice Benard), which Nikolas already knew about, Ava says she is happy about how her relationship with Sonny has been evolving, Nikolas ask if she’s in love with Sonny. Ava denies it, but goes on to say how great it is for her daughter, Avery to be living with both her parents, who are on the same side and not at odds.
Nikolas believes that Ava loves being in Sonny’s inner sanctum and the power that comes with it. Ava fires back that she spent years looking in from the outside and that everyone despised her. When Nikolas brings up Nina (Cynthia Watros), she says Nina never really could understand the true type of man that Sonny is.

Then, Ava launches in on Carly (Laura Wright), and how she would love to stick it to her, for all the times she blocked Ava from seeing her child and Carly’s attitude towards her. Then, Ava admits to Nikolas that she knows that Sonny has a watered-down version of his bipolar medication, which is making him more vulnerable and she’s capitalizing on it for her own gain. She says she needs to figure out who is responsible, but Nikolas voices concern for Ava’s plan and that if Sonny ever found out she knew about it and did nothing, he would be on the warpath against her. Ava promises she knows what she’s doing. When she says goodbye to Nikolas, he looks upset and sad, as he still seemingly cares for Ava.

Meanwhile in Drew’s (Cameron Mathison) office, Nina walks in complaining about Carly giving her a hard time about maintenance in her office. Nina wants payback for Jason (Steve Burton) buying Carly the hotel, but Drew is not up for playing games with her. She says they both want revenge on Jason and Carly, which Drew denies. Next thing you know, Nina grabs Drew and kisses him. Although, it seems he might walk out the door and away from her, he locks it, and the two proceed to have round 2 of their hate-sex.

Elsewhere, Anna tells Jason about her shooting Charlotte and her concern about Valentin’s (James Patrick Stuart) involvement with Pikeman. Meanwhile, Valentin visits Jack Brennan (Charles Mesure) in Pentonville, where threats are laid out to make Sonny look like the guilty party in eliminating Jason, while Anna is the line of fire, if she doesn’t keep her nose out of Pikeman business, which worries Valentin, who doesn’t want Anna getting hurt in any of this.

You must be pretty easy to please. Most viewers have higher standards of what makes enjoyable entertainment. Besides their major competition was Days? Yeah that tells me all I need to know. Lets check back next year shall we?
Janet, just goes to show you that these awards mean nothing. The writing has been God awful.
Down to four soaps, only two were nominated, 50/50 chance.
They lost last year and when Days won RC berated the WGA for giving the award to scabs. Now I guess they are credible and in good standing.
But forget any of that, lets congratulate the writers because this validates them and invalidates any of the criticism. Right?
There are no major holes anymore, no more inconsistencies, no more dialogue that contradicts or characters mind numbingly dumbed down to advance plot. None of it exists anymore. It must not exist because they got this award.
I’m going to assume that this award works like others for TV writing, an episode or two are submitted. That makes sense. If you watch one or two episodes you will miss most of the problems on GH. The main problem is the overall narrative and storytelling. With one episode, you don’t see the contradictions and inconsistencies of a serial that is on everyday and tells stories over an extended period of time.
Well they didn’t win a WGA last year and weren’t even nominated for an Emmy and that didn’t prompt any improvements. So now they’ve won something, so we can really be assured that nothing will improve.
The ratings are good, comparatively speaking (no soap’s ratings are really good any more, but GH’s have shown some growth in the last couple of years). That, more than any awards that might be won or lost, is what will ultimately determine whether anything changes or not.
I love you !! You ve nailed it all. But most are too afraid to speak up in fear that Gh will get cancelled. So they continue to feed the egos and suffer in silence.
GH had a 50/50 chance of winning. I feel like another soap (either Y&R or B&B), should have been added to the category.

The The Writers Guild of America – knows what it is doing, they judge..
They do not judge by ”emotions” ..
Soap fans judge on emotions, on their favorites, on their love for their soap..
The WGA does not do that. They judge on the merits of the writing..

If you bothered to actually read the comments that are posted about the writing, you would clearly see that the criticisms are about the quality of the writing and it is not about emotion or people’s favorites. You can like the show and the writing all you want. You can come up with some rationalization about being modern and 21st century, the bottom line is the writing is consistently terrible.
There shouldn’t even be a WGA category for daytime drama if it is going to be judged on one or two episodes. What determines good writing, books, movies or even episodic TV, is a coherent, logical and cohesive narrative. A story that has a beginning, a middle and an end that comes together and makes sense.
Judging one or two or even ten episodes of a daytime serial that tells stories over a period of months is ridiculous and shows that this award has no real credibility. Even if GH was well written, they couldn’t determine that because they don’t have all the pieces to render that judgment; the beginning, the middle and the end.
On what evidence are you basing your assertion that “the WGA does not do that. They judge on the merits of the writing”? That may be the intention, but I’ve yet to see a show biz award–Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, WGA, whatever–in which that’s actually what happens.
I have no beef with GH’s winning. My own vote would be “none of the above” if I had to pick a winner for Best-Written Soap, but if that wasn’t allowed and I was forced to pick one, GH would get my vote, with significant reservations. But thinking that the WGA’s decision was based strictly on the merits strikes me as very naive.
I also take issue with your statement “Soap fans judge on emotions, on their favorites, on their love for their soap.” While that may be true of some soap fans, or even many soap fans, it’s by no means true of all. Some of us are fans of the genre, rather than any particular soap, and many of us who have been around for a while have watched quite a few different soaps during our time, and we’re quite capable of evaluating what we see with more objectivity than you give us credit for. And we’re certainly better positioned to judge than “judges” who base an award on a few random episodes.
AJQ/GH50, the real bottom line is your statement that the writing is terrible is your opinion, it’s not a fact. You come on here and make these comments, and come off with this attitude like because you say it, that automatically makes it fact. You’re just one person on here sharing an opinion just the rest of us.
And based on your logic, I guess there shouldn’t be Emmy Awards either, because they’re judging based on one or two episodes of a particular actor or show, and not an entire year of shows. But I guess in your world, the awards are only fair and accurate when GH doesn’t win anything.
Dan, to point out that someone giving their opinion is them giving their opinion only shows me that the “opinion” must be pretty relevant and resonate too soundly. I think the majority of adults realize that comments in a comments section are opinions. Again, it just might be that my opinions come off as sounding like fact because there is so much truth in them. It seems to me that many other people here post their opinions and seem confident in those opinions, yet you say that I have an attitude and think because I say it, it is automatically a fact? I find that interesting.
If I’m wrong, why don’t you give examples as to why I am? Why don’t you explain why the writing is good? Why don’t you give examples of why I am wrong.
As for your last bit about my thinking that there shouldn’t be Emmy awards and that according to my thinking awards are only fair if GH doesn’t win anything, again, pretty funny how you draw that conclusion. Instead of just throwing that out there to try and discredit my opinion, which you didn’t, why not make the point to why I am wrong? Why not make the point that you can properly judge the writing on a serial that tells a story over an extended period of time with one or two episodes? Would we judge a 120 page movie script on five or six pages? Would we judge a 300 page book on a chapter? No, because it is about the complete narrative. It is about telling a story, intelligently and coherently from beginning, middle to end. Something that you can’t do with a soap. Something you can do with other TV shows, like Law and Order where in the course of one episode a murder is discovered at the beginning, the crime is investigated in the middle and the crime is solved at the end.
Acting for me is different, you can gauge a performance in a episode or two, because it is a performance. It is easier to judge acting ability through a few scenes. Writing is about the story, it is about the narrative.
If the writing award is supposed to just be about how scenes are written, about dialogue etc, then the process is appropriate. But getting back to my original point that I made at the top, that would then make sense for GH to win because the major issues with the writing, the holes, inconsistencies and contradictions that we see over time, would not be apparent.
Anyway Dan, hope that clears things up. I’m intrigued as to why you are so offended by well thought out criticism of the show? I have to wonder why you care so much.
And please tell us why you think the writing is so good and also, please make sure to point out to those who post positive comments and defend the show, that it is only their opinions and not fact.
Dan, I don’t think it’s subjective to state that GH lacks a basic stroyboard. There’s no introduction, no rising action, no climax and certainly no resolution (ending).
The majority seems to feel the writing is very poor and after awhile it seems someone needs to sit and take note. Even the most loyal and ardent fans become disenchanted with the direction GH has taken. And despite what Su000 says, you cannot continue to blame the viewer for not “getting it” or for “taking it all too seriously.” After awhile the writer has to take responsibility for the disenchanted franchise.

I wish Ron was speechless. When he accepted the award he made some defensive sarcastic remark.
He said, “Writers complain about writing 36 episodes a year, try writing 250 a year.” While he might have a valid point, that was neither the time or place to make such a remark.
He was being lauded and rewarded for his writing endeavors and he uses that time to go on the defense. He’s the Gene Simmons of daytime.
Ron’s his own worst enemy, Harry. I fully believe he’d get far less withering criticism of the problems with his writing if he were more gracious and less confrontational in general.
On that particular remark, I can see ways of saying that (tone of voice, etc.), that wouldn’t be obnoxious. Why is it that I just don’t think he chose one of those?

I’ve got mixed feelings. Always want to congratulate the winners because it takes a lot of hard work and creativity to take the award, especially daytime drama with it’s new scripts everyday. And happy they even have an award for daytime. But I guess they don’t take viewer comments into account because they haven’t been very complimentary about the Fluke story for a lot of us. Then there are only four soaps, so not as much competition. Wonder why Y&R and B&B didn’t submit? Not saying the winner would have been different, but would have liked to see them represented. And whether I’m a GH fan or not, there is a reason Y&R still ranks #1 in ratings.
As well they should… For the multiple, interwoven storylines, that breath

Don’t know the rules, but certainly only two or three episodes were selected for consideration. With that in mind, this ‘win’ most likely does not reflect what the viewer is subjected to daily. Cause personally, with this writing team, I fully expect seeing KAPOW and ZOINK coming across the scenes at any moment. (It worked for Batman!)

Funny thing that neither Y&R nor B&B were even nominated two years in a row. I think the professionals are making a statement. They are both lacking to say the least.
Most of these award shows are based on one episode or two so without knowing which episodes both shows submitted it is hard for me to judge which was the better written. The day to day stuff might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there have been episodes when the writing has been very good–not the plot but the dialogue stuff. So I would be curious to know what episode they won with– whatever we might think of the process these award shows are based on, they were rewarded for their work; it is a personal achievement that in long term will mean nothing to the success or failure of the show and in a year’s time no one but those who won will remember it, so they should be allowed to enjoy their moment in the sun.
So really the deal is whatever most of you think–on this board and others–GH writers won a coveted WGA award. They were judged by their peers and they won–period. Congratulations are in order

I agree with this assessment. I see problems, sometimes big ones. I also see some very good stuff, and I can actually watch full episodes and watch the show for long stretches (weeks at a time), neither of which I could do while JFP and Guza/Wolf were in charge–I would either turn off an episode 10 minutes in or I would watch for two or three days and then realize I just couldn’t keep watching and needed a break (a lo-o-o-o-o-o-o-ng break).
But the rest of the world seems to be in absolute-love (blind to the problems) or absolute-hate (blind to the good things) mode. I don’t get it.
Regarding the absolute-hate group, I do get that RC’s fairly obnoxious persona does not help one bit. But on this particular award, who exactly do people think SHOULD have gotten it? If “none of the above” (my personal choice) isn’t an option and somebody has to get the award, who? I certainly don’t think it should have been Y&R (an absolute mess for most of the year) or B&B (does what it does very well and with great consistency, but it doesn’t exactly aim high); I haven’t watched enough of DAYS lately to form an opinion, but judging from comments on here, regular viewers of that show have had some serious problems with the writing as well. In terms of sustained quality across an entire year, I don’t think any of the four shows qualifies for a writing award. At least GH gave us a number of very good moments (amidst, yes, some absolutely head-shaking things).
Maybe it’s that it comes close enough to show people what it could be like if TOTB would just put more effort into certain areas (use of vets, cutting down on the camp quotient, certain kinds of plausibility/continuity) and that makes it harder to forgive. I don’t know. Like you, Lucy D., I’m pretty baffled when I see the level of vitriol, however.
See? I don’t think there is an absolute hate group here. It’s basic human nature to dwell on the negative rather than the positive.
If a waiter serves one hundred people in one day and only one of those people is rude and cantankerous, that waiter is going to complain about that one customer while forgetting to mention how lovely the other people are.
I think if there is an absolute hate group they aren’t watching at all, and therefore, aren’t posting here. I do think people should be afforded the right to complain without being called a hater. It’s just plain silly and kind of immature.
I watch once or twice a week. I have loved GH for about thirty five years now and so when they drop the ball I am going to point it out. That doesn’t make me a hater. In fact, I think it means quite the opposite.
Thanks for your thoughtful reply. It’s disappointing as a fan when you sign on to a board to discuss and dish on what MAY be. I come here to talk about characters I like or don’t. Or things I hope will or won’t happen.
What I do like is intelligent writing and this team simply doesn’t have it. I’m not sure what this team is being rewarded for? When RC has to clarify his storylines on Twitter that should tell you something. Someone said it best when they said “I’m not 12, I need a lot more to be entertained. ”
Finally, if the media press would actually call GH out on the inconsistant writing they could earn my respect. Perhaps if RC could receive constructive criticism, he could earn my respect.

Cheers to GH! I actually arrange afternoon schedule as possible to view it….HOWEVER, bring some of old great Luke/Scorpio type humor back into it ,which reason I first got hooked. Hate new “Luke” character and that scenario, tho interested to see how explain “Luke” character tormenting another in basement if both same? So enjoy GH, but even more when had more subtle but so enjoyable touches of humor.
Show is wonderful, actually often schedule my day around it, but long for old type humor interactions such as Luke/Scorpio which truly first hooked me so many years ago….and truly interest waning a bit w/o that engaging humor element now. And HATE this however manipulated version of Luke. Will keep tuning in or perhaps more often recording now, to keep up, but hey bring OUR Luke back soon! :-))
General Hospital definitely has the best story lines. I watch all three soaps that are on the air and GH wins the prize in my book.

General Hospital has had the best storylines all year. Days has been horrifically awful – YR is repetitive – same stories over and over and over and over. Nothing original. Congrats to GH and its fabulous cast, crew, writers and directors!

I do not understand comments like yours, GB. I do not understand why long time and loyal viewers cannot express their dissatisfaction with the writing without being called haters.
WE as viewers, DO get to judge the writing of the show just as a Starbucks’ customer gets to judge the quality of their double latte with enough froth to make it aesthetically pleasing but not too much as to give one a mustache. Moreover, most of us have jobs which are not served up as public fodder therefore your comparison is moot. Ron cannot come into, for example, a paper manufacturing office and complain to the office secretary that he doesn’t care for her TBS reports. And I take umbrage with your suggestion that we are in no position to judge because we are not writers. Please consider the following points: 1. Have you read the posts here? Most of the commentators are intelligent and well educated. 2. You don’t know that none of us write for a living –that is rather presumptuous on your part 3. And finally, even if we do not have a secondary education or even if we are not professional writers, we know good storytelling when we see it so for you to presume otherwise is rather disrespectful.
The Fluke debacle has taken its toll and people GET to feel disenchanted. That sense of disenchantment is only exasperated by the writing team winning an award for writing.

I should hope the viewer’s voice is heard loud & clear. They are the consumer after all. GH is a product being sold. Awards are nice but if the consumer doesn’t like the product then what? Anyone who minimalizes the weight of the viewer might as well get out of the entertainment industry altogether.

As someone who makes a living writing (not TV or movies) I would like to point out that writing is a skill and just because you can compose “an intelligent” post on a board doesn’t mean you can write.
And while Harry, it would be nice to say the commenters are expressing “disappointment” if you read most of the posts, people are just disappointed, they’re angry. And I’m mystified why people who are so mad at Ron & the writers continue to watch–especially since the ratings are up which means Ron & Co. are satisfying most consumers–just not the ones here.
Actually if you follow the ratings they are breaking even. GH isn’t gaining viewers, it’s just trading them out. You can see that in the week to week and the yearly numbers. They gain 100k one week then turn around and lose +100k the next. Some weeks they gain 300k over last year then turn around and lose that many over the following weeks. The ratings are also a best guess. Nielsen doesn’t poll every household therefore they can’t give an accurate picture of the entire viewing audience. When there’s a Nielsen box in every household then I’ll put stock in those ratings. Until then it’s just an estimate.
People REALLY need to get out on social media more and actually SEE what’s being said about GH. It’s not good. And the voices are getting fewer and fewer. Many have given up. There were high hopes that this regime could turn the show around. I for one was not deluded for very long. Between the utter lack of respect for what’s come before and the atrocious behavior of Ron himself on Twitter I’ve thrown in the towel. This isn’t GH. Not sure exactly what it is but I do know I’m not interested in watching any of it. I read comments here & there and I might skim through a spoiler or two but rush home to watch it every day? That hasn’t happened in a very long time. Viewers don’t care what “panels” think of a show. They watch for the enjoyment. Awards mean squat to the average viewer. So GH can win every single award there is out there. It doesn’t mean that it’s a good show or that viewers are compelled to watch. Again, get out there and actually read what’s being said. You might be surprised how many people are NOT happy with the show.
