B&B’s John McCook Dishes On: Eric & Quinn’s Future, Kimberlin Brown’s Return & The Machinations Of Sheila & Those Emotional Scenes With Thorsten Kaye!

Photo Credit: Gilles Toucas/Courtesy Bell-Phillip Prods

Over the last several months, The Bold and the Beautiful’s longtime stalwart, John McCook has been front and center as Eric Forrester, the patriarch of the fashion empire clan.  While viewers witnessed the twist and turns as Eric’s wife, Quinn (Rena Sofer) and his son, Ridge (Thorsten Kaye) found themselves in a clandestine attraction, the audience was waiting with bated breath to see how they would be busted, and Eric would find out about their betrayal.

What fans of the series did not know was that behind-the-scenes they plotted the return of super-villain, Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown) into the mix, which set the stage for two women to vie for the attention of Mr. Forrester.  Now, while Quinn is known for some manipulative machinations in the past, it’s a tall order to go toe-to-toe with vengeful, Sheila, who has set her sights on becoming Mrs. Forrester once again by any means possible.

On-Air On-Soaps chatted with John to find out what it was like to film those pivotal scenes, including when Eric disowned Ridge, his reaction to learning Kimberlin Brown was coming back to the CBS Daytime drama series, how Eric feels now with Sheila and Quinn  in the picture, and much more.  Could this be the year that Mr. McCook is remembered once again come Daytime Emmy time? Stay tuned! For now, here’s what he had to say about all the recent melodrama on B&B!

A few months back, Eric found out about Ridge and Quinn’s lip-locks, and attraction to each other which devastates him.  What did you think about getting that material, which not only was a showcase of your co-stars, but you as well?

Courtesy/CBS

JOHN: I look at Thorsten, and Rena, and myself and we are journeyman actors, and are confident in our skills, and what we know about good material gives us a chance to shine.  We don’t look at it as: “Oh, here is material that I can show what I can really do!”  We don’t need that.  But when we get a moment like this in a story that is so big and important to us, we get excited to come to work, because here it is. Here are our moments to be touched by each other, and to really get involved in a scene together.  That is the joy in doing scenes like that for us.

When this all went down on-screen, little did the audience know that Sheila would be back in the picture, and a catalyst for the truth to come out.  What did you think of the twist?

Courtesy/CBS

JOHN: I thought it was a great twist.  It brought the story to a climax, and not only that it was twisting and turning it, but audience is clapping their hands with glee that Sheila is there! I have to admit, Thorsten, Rena and me, were like, “Why is she in our scenes?” (Laughs)   We didn’t want anyone else there with us, and we were very jealous of it, and very protective of our scene. But in fact, it was written, directed, and discussed with all of us that Shelia would not interfere, not change the chemistry of the scene, and that she was merely observing. That is the way that Kimberlin played it.  When she came in I have to say, I was very impressed by how respectful she was of the story we were playing, and how it must have felt for us to have her injected in there, and she actually called attention to it in rehearsal. We were running lines, and she said, “You guys, I don’t want to step on this at all. This is your scene the three of you, and I don’t want to encroach on that.”   It was a very sophisticated and helpful thing for her to say.  So, I give her credit for that. Then of course, Sheila takes advantage of the scene at the end and the punch line of it is she then begins to get close to Eric, and that opens the door.  Kimberlin knows how to do that kind of scene better than anybody.

When you learned Kimberlin was coming back to B&B, what was your initial reaction?

JOHN: I knew it would be story for me, whatever it is. (Laughs)  I am Kimberlin is here, and to be fought over by two powerful characters played by wonderful actresses (Brown and Sofer) like that makes it so fun for me to be there every day.  Once again, I am stuck in that Eric place, which is trying to be believable and intelligent, and sensitive to the two of them without appearing to be dumb as a rock.

Courtesy/CBS

Often, we have seen Eric in story where he is the last to know, or completely miffed to the situation at hand.  After all, he is a very smart man underneath, or he would never have become so successful in business and building his own fashion empire.

JOHN: I have to be careful in how I play it in that; I am not too supportive of Sheila, and condemning of Quinn.  What I want Eric to say is, “The two of you have got to stop this, and be more adult!”  So when he chastises one, he has to chastise the other.  I have to constantly keep him between them, and not leaning one way or the other.

Is Eric truly, madly, deeply in love with Quinn after all that has transpired in recent months?

JOHN: Absolutely, and they are together.  For the last few years, I have been playing two stories which define who Eric is.  One is with my oldest son, Ridge, and the other is Eric’s love story with Quinn.  No matter what happens that is the story, and that is what I am playing. If Sheila is there that’s fine, but my story is about my relationship with Quinn.  My story in business and in my home is Eric’s story with Ridge.  Those are the stories that go deep for my character and for me as an actor. Everything else is ancillary to that.

What Quinn and Ridge did behind Eric’s back with their shared closeness, attraction to one another, and passionate kisses was on the surface a pretty costly thing to do to a man they both love.  B&B does moves fast through story, which often keeps the series completely entertaining, as you may never know what’s going to happen next.   What do you think is the true state of Ridge and Quinn’s relationship at this point?

Courtesy/CBS

JOHN: I think there is a new level of connection between Ridge and Quinn.  I think it’s been tempered.  They both realize they need to keep it in check and recognize it for what it should be … which is a powerful friendship based on their experiences together, and what they have revealed to one another. Other things are more important than that: Quinn’s marriage and her love for Eric, and Ridge’s love for his father, too.

Do you think Eric moved to fast back into a relationship with Quinn?

JOHN: The fact that this thing happened between Quinn and Ridge is not something he is going to erase from his brain, but he is not suspicious of her, or fearful of it happening anymore.  He absolutely sort of tested her with divorce papers, and all of that.  Eric saw her regretfulness, and how much she loves him.  He also is completely at this point past what happened between Ridge and her.  If it comes back again at all, I think that would be the end of everything, because he believes in his relationship with Quinn.

Courtesy/CBS

One of the most moving scenes of the soap season in 2017 has been the emotional moments when Eric disowns Ridge, after his son comes to see him in the motel room he is staying at, and a lot of their complicated history is talked about.  Take me through how you felt about those scenes, and working with Thorsten Kaye in them that delivered two knock-it-out-of-the-park performances.

JOHN: Thorsten and I are very deeply affected by father/son scenes in a generic way, and I see those in other shows, as well.  Father/son things really move me.  I know Thorsten feels the same way.  So when we have had an opportunity over the years to have moments of father/son stuff – whether it is affection, advice, or fear – we have loved those scenes.  However, this one was so deep and so visceral that we were just so happy to get the scene to play, and we were so happy it was with each other.  He and I love each other so much as men and as actors, and as these characters, and so it was very painful for us, and it should be in a good way.  It was very, very touching for us, and we were very happy with the end results. Thorsten often says, “I don’t want to see these scenes, because I don’t want to know if they looked as good, as they felt to do.”  When I asked him if he had watched the scene, he said “No. I don’t want it to look less than how good it felt to do when we did it, because I don’t want to spoil how it felt.”  I respect that.

Did you watch back your work with Rena, Thorsten and Kimberlin in the major moments in the story arc?

JOHN: I did watch them back. I thought they were great, and we got to go to those important places, and got to execute the material as well as we wanted to, and that is not always so.  We don’t always achieve as actors what we set out to do.

You must submit some of this work for the upcoming Daytime Emmys! It is a great example of what you can do, and some best work you have ever done.  Knowing you over the years, much of what I saw on-screen touched me so much and was heartbreaking.

JOHN:  You can come be my PR person anytime! (Laughs).  I have had many opportunities in my career, but for this to come together now is sort of the perfect storm – my experience, my age, my time on our show, the characters coming together, and the story coming together at this time, and all converging on these points.  I thank you for the wonderful compliment you gave to me, but I got to do the scenes with people I love on the show, and we all grow very close when we share these kinds of scenes.

Then, Ian Buchanan came back!  This poses another overriding problem for Eric, since James and Sheila are in collusion, too.

JOHN: I love that, and he brings a wrinkle back into her plans … very nicely.  I am sure that Sheila’s jaw-dropped when he walked in to the room.  This expands the challenges of her particular charade.

In story, Eric contacted James to bring him to look at Sheila’s “head” injury and to have her psychologically evaluated, but little does he know Sheila blackmailed James!

JOHN:  Yes.  Eric brought him in and says to keep it private, but he wanted some confirmation that she really needed more time at the mansion to recuperate, and Eric will abide by what James says.

When I was putting together The Bold and the Beautiful’s 30th Anniversary Daytime Emmy montage earlier this year, and looking through years of memorable scenes and footage,  one nugget that was so soapy and wild was when Sheila shoots at Brooke, while Eric is standing there, and then he wrestles her for the gun, and then Taylor gets shot!  The things that Sheila has perpetrated over the years to this family!  For her to be infiltrating the Forresters again, you have to suspend belief as the audience … a wee bit!  Wouldn’t you say? (Laughs)

JOHN: You have to suspend belief!  Oh, my God! (Laughs)  When they told me Sheila was coming back, and that not only does he run into her, but Sheila was wrongly accused of being the shooter of Quinn, Eric then puts her in his house.  I called Brad Bell (executive producer and head writer, B&B) and Michael Minnis (writer, B&B), and I said, “There is no way Eric would have her in his house, least of all to apologize for her maybe committing a crime!” (Laughs)  I said, “How can I justify this?” (Laughs)  So I said, “You cannot have me do this, without her leaving the room in the scene, and I then need to go to Ridge, and say, ‘Do this with me’.  He says, ‘What?’ Eric says, ‘I know what she is capable of, but she is back.  I want to keep a close eye on her.  So do this with me.” And so Ridge says, ‘OK.’”   That took the onus off of me, and the curse off of me of being so hospitable towards Sheila. At least, it showed the audience that I understood who she was, but we had to get over that hump to get her back into story. They let me explain it in the story, so it was all good.

Have you ever examined why Eric chooses these incredibly screwed up, difficult women to have romantic relationships with i.e. Stephanie, Sheila, Quinn?  What is that all about?

JOHN: Maybe he gets bored with sweet, wonderful women?  He also had a relationship with Lauren, and she was not crazy, nor was Donna.  We can go back and try to examine what Eric’s mother was like, or what his father was like.  However, I think you are right. Stephanie fits in that group.  These are pistol-packing mamas! (Laughs) They are really crazy! (Laughs)

As Sheila is attempting to sink her claws into Eric with new and continued machinations, and Eric hope’s he can keep his relationship with Quinn intact, what do you think the audience should keep an eye on?

JOHN: I think the audience needs to watch how much Eric loves Quinn.  She wants to be a better person, while Sheila never did.  Now that Sheila is back, Sheila says she does want to be a better person, or so she tells Eric. That’s’ what he believes.  So, I think that is why Eric is accepting her better than he would have before.  Sheila is trying to assimilate herself back into society, or you can substitute “Eric’s bedroom”, if you want to.   In story, we are right back to where we were before, which is a good place, for Quinn and Eric, and everybody else on the show that comes in contact and has to deal with Sheila.  I would have liked to have seen Sheila not revealed to be evil right away and let people wonder a bit more.  It’s like Quinn.  People think, “When is her evil side going to come back?”  I don’t foresee any of Quinn’s evil coming back, but I do foresee Quinn’s capabilities rising to the occasion. So when Sheila slaps her around, Quinn can give it back.  It’s predictable in some ways, but so really fun to watch.  I salute our show and what is good about what we do every day.

So, are you rooting for Eric and Quinn to weather the storm of Hurricane Sheila? Would you like to see Sheila become Mrs. Forrester … again? What did you think of John’s performances when he found out about Ridge and Quinn’s betrayal of Eric? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

John McCook and Thorsten Kaye probably have the best chemistry of anyone currently on the Bold and the Beautiful. While the writers struggle to write believable romance on this show, JMC and TK hit their complex, multi-layered father/son relationship out of the park in every scene. It’s always nice to read of their mutual respect for each other in their interviews, and to hear how much pride and care they take in their work.

I actually wrote Brad Bell a long time ago and asked him to hire Jaime Lyn Bauer to rival Quinn for Eric’s attention…I think it would be wonderful to see Jaime Lyn and John McCook back together but I am also glad to see Sheila back which brings a lot of twist and turns to the story line…Brad, if you are reading these post I still wish you would consider hiring Jaime Lyn Bauer…

Oh my stars! I LOVE the idea of Jaime Lyn being hired on! She and John have wonderful chemistry! My fondest memories of THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS are the early years with the Foster and Brooks families and their stories. No one could wear a veil like Vanessa Prentiss, Lance’s mum! To this day, I can still remember the week where Friday ended with Vanessa shooting her own son, thinking it was Lorie! Even the back ground music during that week is still in my memory bank!

Hello Bold and Restless, BTW, love that name, lol and if you don’t mind that is the way I am going to describe myself for now on, lol…OH the MEMORIES of the days with Lorie, Vanessa, Lance and Lucas for I also loved the early years of Y&R and all the way up to 2006 when everything changed…and you are a person after my own heart Bold and Restless for I have contacted Y&R on several occasions to ask and beg for them to return the classic background music to Y&R but they aren’t listening to me…

Excellent idea, Kevin!!!!! I think that Jaime Lyn Bauer would make a WONDERFUL AND WELCOME ADDITION to the B&B cast…PERIOD!!!!!

Take care.

THANKS jaybird369…I appreciate the support and I wish that Bradley Bell would hire JLB, she would be a wonderful asset to B&B…

Sorry! And we wonder why soaps are dying. 60-80 year old actors are playing recycled scripts from 20-30 years ago, hoping to grab the 12-30 demographic. Ain’t gonna happen!!! So sad that Mr. McCook is forced to play these absurd scenes!!

& the character does appear to be written as “dumb as a rock.”-IMO. I think the show is unwatchable.

Soaps aren’t written for 12 year olds. Some 12-year-olds might have watched soaps with their moms or grandmothers, but that’s not the target audience, obviously. And many of the prime time shows feature love stories between adults “60-80” which, by the way, if we’re discussing age here, 60 isn’t 80.

Soaps have always revolved around passionate love, unrequited love, jealousy, betrayal…I see nothing different here. And, if that’s your point, that they’re “recycled scripts”…well, yes…they are. The anatomy of a soap. Familiarity, continuity and history. Rinse, repeat. I love that soaps are using their veteran actors in major stories. GH should take a page out of B&B’s book in that regard.

Yes, I want Eric and Quinn to weather Sheila and her machinations.

All the performances have been great.

“Once again, I am stuck in that Eric place, which is trying to be believable and intelligent, and sensitive to the two of them without appearing to be dumb as a rock.” OMG, I cracked up at that. It’s Eric in a nutshell. Perfect.

IMO, the character appears to be “dumb as a rock.” haha

Excellent interview. I’ve felt for a long time that the mutual respect and love which Thorsten Kaye and John McCook have for each other come through in even the smallest of scenes between Eric and Ridge. The scene in which Eric disowned Ridge was exceptional. But I have two issues which dim my enthusiasm. The first is that we saw no follow up except for Ridge occasionally mentioning that he was in Eric’s dog-house to Steffy or Brooke, and before two months had passed, Eric had forgiven Ridge. There needed to be more there, more payoff, more drama, more self-reflection by both men, and we saw zilch. The second issue is that I can’t help but feel that TK connects infinitely better with JMC than with any of his leading ladies on B&B, past or present. I wish that somehow, he’d have that kind of emotional depth with any of the women in Ridge’s life. Something’s lacking there and I don’t know what it is or how to fix it. JMHO

I.rather see Sheila back.as Mrs forrester again Sheila believes in changing herself over time the haters will see that shes better quinn .

Sick of shelia again!

Please don’t separate Quinn and Eric just for once let him be in love and get rid of Sheila. Brooke also needs to stand by her man and forgive him this is stupid her going back and forth back and forth to Ridge I wish he would shave for once. DirecTV and I’m so glad you did not have Quinn go to bed with Eric.

I will tell you Brooke is the best actress who can cry On Cue of all the soap operas on TV today. It’s kind of weird though that she has other children and their never mentioned.

I’m over the back and forth relationship of everybody Sheila being back is over rated that evil person is over rated also leave Eric with Quinn you somebody has to have a real working relationship, same goes for Brooke who has been married to every man on the show except her own son…..that back and forth is tiring…..

Ingo Rademacher and Rena Sofer : LOOK @their eyes

Please get rid of Sheila. Would much rather see Eric and Quinn be happy and true to each other for a change.

Nice interview. I think it’s great that John McCook is so invested in the show, his co-workers and his character. It’s that type of passion and love for one’s work that makes being a fan even better; knowing that actor and audience take the fictional journey together.

I’m a new viewer to B&B (a little over a year) so there’s a lot of history I’m unaware of. But I do find it odd that Eric remained neutral when Sheila and Quinn had a physical fight, or that he would allow her to “recuperate” in their home. That’s a stretch even by soap standards. I saw a glimpse of Eric coming back stronger when he warned Mateo to not betray his trust…and recently when he reacted strongly to Quinn’s attack on Katie when she found her in bed with Wyatt. Eric needs to be drawn with this stronger backbone…makes him more appealing in every way. Pushovers aren’t appealing at any age. 🙂

Two things…Sheila’s scenes seem to be offset with Dark Shadows music, LOL, or some music score from the archives of soapdom…

Why are we seeing this interview now. Seems like these scenes took place (as did Ian Buchanan’s brief appearance on the show. No mention of the new “threat” Mateo?) Is this an months-old interview? Confused…

I think that Donna and Eric should hook up for a while. Let quinn out of his life and let her continue with Carter.

Haley Pullos Receives 90-Day Jail Sentence Following DUI Charge And Wrong-Way Car Crash

Former General Hospital actress, Haley Pullos (ex-Molly Lansing-Davis) is going to be doing time in jail, exactly one-year after her arrest from a hit and run wrong-way car collision.

The crash resulted in bodily harm and damages to the other driver, and now Pullos who pleaded “no contest” to the charges and will serve 90 days in jail. She was taken in custody on Monday, April 29th, after the ruling.

According to Haley’s attorney, Mark Daniel Melnick, the 25-year-old actress struck a plea deal and after her three months in jail will be sentenced on July 29th. As part of that sentencing, she must serve five years probation, 200 hours of community service and pay $8,260 in restitution to Courteney Wilder, the other driver in the crash and her driver’s license is revoked for a year.

According to TMZ, the plea deal for Pullos has the “no contest” to one DUI, while the judge dropped the felony DUI causing bodily injury and misdemeanor hit and run charges.

Melnick said in a statement to PEOPLE, “Haley is very grateful to the court for a minimum sentence and for recognizing her remorse and the strides she has made in her sobriety.”

Pullos had played the daughter of Alexis Davis (played by Nancy Lee Grahn) on the ABC soap opera since 2009, but after her car crash and DUI she was replaced by three different actresses until the show finally settled on the current Molly, Kristen Vaganos.

Back in April 29 of 2023, and at the scene of the crash, the police found edibles and mini-bottles of tequila in Pullos’ vehicle and that she was intoxicated. As it turned out, this was to be the second hit and run in the evening for Pullos who had an earlier collision with another car.

The courts decision follows a year-long legal battle with Haley’s pleas changing throughout it, ranging from “not guilty” to “no contest”. She sought treatment for her drinking at a rehab following the crash.

Nancy Lee Grahn, who portrayed Pullos’ on-screen mom took to X on Monday night, April 29th and shared on the sentence and the specific jail, Haley will be serving time: “As Haley’s TV mom I can tell some truths about her as I’ve loved her since she was little girl. She made a HUGE mistake, knows it, owns it & has spent the last yr doing EVERYTHING imaginable to take responsibility 4 it. It’s not that I oppose jail. It’s that I oppose this jail.” The jail in question by Grahn is the L.A. county jail.

So, what do you think about Haley Pullos serving a 90-days jail sentence, and the other rulings that will be part of her sentencing? Comment below.

Kimberlin Brown Back to The Bold and the Beautiful

As expected, although viewers didn’t know exactly when it would be revealed, on today’s April 29th episode of The Bold and the Beautiful, Sheila Carter is found alive and well.

Finn (Tanner Novlan) and Deacon (Sean Kanan) make the discovering that Sheila didn’t actually die; and that it was her plastic surgery makeover lookalike, Sugar, that met her maker. That means, Sheila’s portrayer, Kimberlin Brown, is back on the show and Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) killed Sugar in self-defense, not Sheila.

Speaking on what was a shocking return for her, Brown chatted with Deadline about her getting the opportunity to resurrect Sheila one more time and with a new contract to boot.

Photo: JPI

When asked if she thought B&B’s executive producer and head writer, Brad Bell changed course midstream in the story, Kimberlin expressed, “Either that or he had this in mind all along and just didn’t tell me about it! But I can’t see anybody doing anything that evil, however. That would be a Sheila moment.”

Photo: JPI

Kimberlin also shared how she first learned she was being let go from the show, recalling, “Brad called me upstairs to talk to me about what he had in mind for Sheila. It was a hard pill for me to swallow. It had been years of playing Sheila, and I consider her my baby, so to speak. And that was definitely not news I was anticipating or hoping to receive.” She added “When I walked into his office, he looked at me and went, ‘We’re killing off your character.’”

As to what the future holds for Sheila, enduring villainess and fan favorite, Kimberlin Brown, shared some intel: “I am happy to say that I have been asked to negotiate another contract.’

So, glad to know that Kimberlin Brown is back as Sheila Carter? What do you think will be Sheila’s next move? Did you believe for a second, maybe two, that Sheila would really be ‘dead-dead’ on the soaps? Comment below.

(INTERVIEW) Y&R’s Eric Braeden Chats on His First Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination in 20 Years, Why He Entered the Race After Voting Reform, and His Enduring Legacy as Victor Newman

The Young and the Restless’ iconic Eric Braeden (Victor Newman) received his first Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination in 20 years, when NATAS and the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards revealed who would be going for gold at the upcoming ceremony on June 7th live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.

The iconic Braeden is a past Lead Actor recipient having won back in 1998. However, the last time Eric was nominated in the category was 2004. Throughout his enduring run on the top-rated CBS soap opera, he has now received a total of 9 Lead Actor nominations and a 10th, when back in 2002, along with Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki), they were nominated in the now defunct and then special fan voted category for “America’s Favorite Couple.”

This year, Eric’s nominated reel features scenes between Victor and Adam (Mark Grossman) where they discuss their fractured relationship as father and son, and the struggles and conflicts they have had personally and in business. In addition, Braeden also shares scenes with Melody Thomas Scott’s Nikki, where Victor voices his disappointment that the Newman children seemingly can’t get along and work together within the Newman dynasty. In Eric’s reel, the only characters who make appearances are the aforementioned Adam and Nikki.

Michael Fairman visited the set of The Young and the Restless for a special video sit-down with the legendary star exclusively for the Michael Fairman Channel.

During the conversation, Eric touched upon why he will participate in the Daytime Emmys at this point in his career due to changes in the voting procedures, his most embarrassing Emmy moment, how he feels about his fellow nominees, and that he wilattending this year’s ceremony.

Here are a few excerpts from the interview below, followed by the full video interview in its entirety.

How does it feel to get your first Lead Actor nomination in 20 years?

ERIC: You can’t help but feel very good about it. I had not submitted any stuff for more than 10 years, because I didn’t believe in the voting process. Finally, the academy had the sense to invite outsiders to widen the circle of those who vote for this. You cannot ask for objectivity when you vote from within only your company. That’s nonsense. Then, personalities play a role in who likes who. I’m very happy about the nomination, though.

You had some scenes between father and son on your nominated reel, as Victor and Adam (Mark Grossman) discuss their complex relationship and history. How was working with Mark?

ERIC: Mark Grossman is a wonderful actor. He’s a good actor.

You would up this year in a Lead Actor category that also features: John McCook (Eric, B&B), Thorsten Kaye (Ridge, B&B), Scott Clifton (Liam, B&B), and Eric Martsolf (Brady, DAYS). I think you know some of these gentlemen?

ERIC: Thorsten Kaye is a very good actor. I’ve known John McCook for 150 years, I think 140 years, maybe. And the other gentlemen, I don’t know, but I’m sure they’re all worthy of receiving the same award.

Photos: CBS and JPI

I talked to Eric Martsolf after he received his Daytime Emmy nomination, and he said he’s so honored to be in the category with you, and that his late mother would be so thrilled that he’s in the category with Victor Newman. My late mom felt the same way when she came to the set and met you years ago. For so many people, you are the guy they all want to meet.

ERIC: That’s nice. That’s really very touching to know. This medium in that sense has been wonderful. As I’ve told you before, I joined this reluctantly and signed on for three months, and here I am 44 years later. That’s very nice to know about Eric’s mother, and your mother.

What was your reaction to finding out you were nominated?

ERIC: To be very frank with you, I was very happy. I said “Oh, that’s nice.” Someone had listened because I’d complained for years about the voting system, and it was based on pure laziness as far as I’m concerned. There are 150,000 registered actors in Hollywood. You can’t tell me that you can vote only from within your company. It’s nonsense. It’s not right. You know, let other actors from the outside be judges of what they see.

Photo: Courtesy/NATAS

I believe when you won in 1998, you didn’t go to the Emmy’s, right?

ERIC: I was doing a Shakespeare play that evening, if I recall. However, I’ve got to tell you about the most embarrassing moment. Aretha Franklin was a big fan of the show and of mine. She had asked me if I would present with her at Radio City Music Hall in New York. These producers when you accept an award, be it the Oscars or whatever it is, they will sit in the booth, and they say, “Move on, move on, move on.” They want you to get on and off stage very quickly. That should not be allowed. When you receive an award, then it should last a little. So, there’s a ticker thing in front of me, and you look at it and kept on saying, “Eric Braeden move on.” I’d hardly been there with Aretha Franklin and I wanted to thank Bill Bell (co-creator and former head writer, Y&R). We owe everything to him. We owe everything to that man’s foundation and his genius. So, I stood there with Aretha and I saw again “Eric Braeden.” So I said, “And I would like to thank Eric Braeden.” The moment I said it, I wanted to sink in to the ground. Fortunately, it was a long time ago, but I had to bring it up again because I’ll never forget it.

Photo: CBS

You’ve done so much for this industry, so much for Y&R, and the soaps. You’re an icon in it. It must be nice to get recognized by your peers, at this point in your career.

ERIC: It felt wonderful, no question. I even sent the nominating announcement to my brothers in German. I’m very happy about it, very proud of it, you know.

So, will you be rooting for Eric come Emmy night to take home his first Lead Actor Emmy in 20 years? Share your thoughts via the comment section below.
