Brighton Hertford, Formerly BJ Jones, Returns to General Hospital In New Role For Bobbie’s Memorial Episodes

One actress who came back for Bobbie’s memorial episodes on General Hospital, was someone who hasn’t been on the soap since she was very young.

In a surprise twist, Brighton Hertford who played Tony Jones (Brad Maule) and Bobbie’s adopted daughter BJ, returned in a nice touch playing a reporter for the Associated Press.

Anyone who knows GH, and the history of soaps is aware, the character of BJ died in a school bus accident and her heart went to save Maxie’s life. That storyline was almost 30 years ago, and to this remains one of the most heartbreaking of all-time.

Now, on the January 10th episode, the unexpected visitor that had been teased turned out to be the character of Angela Brighton as played by Hertford. In story, Angela is stationed in Amsterdam, and was helping Bobbie on a story on women who had fallen into sex-trafficking.

The story point works on two levels. It pays tribute to Bobbie’s beloved daughter, BJ, and how Bobbie was trying to save women from the ‘life” that she also wound up in at a young age and trying to survive.

Since GH, Brighton has continued to act and has appeared on TV shows including: Everwood, NYPD Blue, and 7th Heaven and several motion pictures.

What do you think about Brighton Hertford returning to GH, so many years later as part of Bobbie’s memorial episodes? Share your thoughts in the Comment below.

I am so excited she is returning for memorial service.

I love it!! I knew right away it was her! I’m balling my eyes out watching right now!!!!

WOW I didn’t realize it until I read that she played BJ❣️ This is the best show❣️

Omg, I didn’t realize that she was the actress who played B.J. as a child. That is so beautiful that she came back for the memorial. Even if it was a different character.

Didn’t even know it was her!

I felt there is a slight resemble in her eyes to Jacklyn Zemans.

Wow. That’s exactly what I thought!

I wondered if she was related to Jacklyn. (Like they did when John Reilly died.) This is double special though.

I really enjoyed the two day memorial service for the Late Jacklyn Zerman! I cried both days.I was in total shock when Jacklyn Zerman passed in May I have been watching General hospital for over 40 years! Keep up the great work.My hat goes off to the writers.

She is an actress not Bobby/Jacklyns real daughter.

True. But do you not see a resemblence in her eyes.

I did. And many people on line were saying the same thing!

Yes! I see the resemblance… I was thinking the same thing. But I realize she is an actress. I am so impressed with the way GH is honoring Bobbi/Jacklyn on the show. It makes me cry. I can tell the actors have been emotional during this time. “Real emotion” missing their friend. ❤️

she wasn’t Bobbie’s daughter, she was Tony & Tania’s daughter, Tania died in a hit & run accident.

Wrong

Suzy is correct. Despite the red hair, BJ was not Bobbie’s biological child. Tony’s first wife Tania was. Ironically, Tania also died from injuries caused by a hit & run driver.

Carly was Bobbie’s only biological child Though both BJ & Lucas were very young when they were adopted, so they wouldn’t remember any other mother.

And as for the twist… who would have thought the “reporter” would turn out to be somebody from my old neighborhood??

Suzy is correct. Bobbie was BJs adoptive mother. Tania was her birth mother that died in a car accident.

So agree, thought it was her real love daughter. Didn’t think about them having BJ come back! Very cool! Bawling my eyes out while typing this! Way to go writers!

Interesting

I like that they cast her for this part. Regarding the episode: I’m glad they are talking about Bobbie’s youth. I feel they nailed it when they admitted what Bobbie went through was truly human trafficking. What they didn’t address yet (maybe they can’t or maybe they will) is the person who actually trafficked her was GH fan-favorite Aunt Ruby. Will they even go there or will they leave it alone? I noticed today they said Luke should have called the cops. They didn’t really say it would have meant Aunt Ruby would have been the one getting arrested. I’m glad they acknowledged things were different back then. It is totally true. Back then Bobbie was just always referred to as a former prostitute with no real mention of her actually having been a child prostitute. Another example is Laura (during the David Hamilton storyline) was painted as a teenage Lolita in the Port Charles media. It was totally unfair yet that was the norm back then. Anyway, I’m glad they addressed what they could today. It was a good episode.

This show honors history like no other, thank you to the writers and to Frank who has to be the best EP in soap history.

They did make one little mistake in the Wednesday episode though. Scotty was recalling the “good old days” when he would hang out with Laura, Bobbie, Richard Simmons and…. “the Aztec Princess”??

Uh, Richard Simmons was long gone from GH by the time Frisco & Felicia showed up. In fact, my Fuzzy Devil Memory tells me that Scotty himself was on one of his extended absences then… probably when he literally went to Texas (not just the state, but the short lived soap of the same name).

Other than that… and a few missing people who really should have been there (Luke, Lulu, Lucky, and Robert come to mind) I think they did a great job.

Scotty commented on Bobbie’s assortment of friends- not that they all hung out together

Maybe I heard it wrong? I thought he was saying they were all friends in the late 1970s.

Wow. I always think of her as a little girl. That was such a sad story.

A very nice touch! And she is beautiful today!

I think it’s beautiful and a nice arc for the Bobbie memorial story ❤️

Brilliant!

I think it’s AWESOME

I think is awesome when that episode air air was the same day I was burying my niece so that day holds heavy to me. So I’m so happy to see the actress that played her so many years ago.

The reporter is Bj angel

Absolutely so heart warming thank you for an Amazing show General Hospital!

This was a wonderful surprise and I cried too

I would love for her to stay

Me too. I thought she looked like a young Robin Christopher (Sky).

It was an outstanding performance. She came back in the form of angel. Hebrews 13:2 Don’t forget to be kind to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!

They should bring back Robin Christopher as Skye and cast this actress as a grown up Lila Rae. She’d be excellent in the role, and resembles Robin so well!

It was so frustrating delaying Jacklyn / Bobbie’s memorial for months. It was well worth the wait. Having Brighton Hertferd return as BJ made it perfection. Thank uou GH for giving us not only what we needed, but what Jacklyn deserved ❤️

‘General Hospital’ Alum Jonathan Jackson Shares Emotional Tribute to His ‘Nashville’ Leading Lady Hayden Panettiere

Published

The entertainment world has been mourning the loss of Hayden Panettiere, who died on Sunday at the age of 36. Panettiere, who was so familiar to daytime drama fans in the roles of a very young Sarah Roberts on One Life to Live and Lizzie Spaulding on Guiding Light, also starred as an adult in the primetime music city soap opera, Nashville as country and western singer, Juliette Barnes.

Panettiere’s leading man in the series, was none other than six-time Daytime Emmy-winner, Jonathan Jackson (ex-Lucky Spencer, General Hospital) who played musician Avery Barkley.

The actress’ death is still under investigation in Greenville, South Carolina, now calling in the DEA  after the Greenville County Coroner’s Office said there was “no signs of trauma that were discovered that would have contributed to the death.” Hayden’s body was released to her family on Tuesday, August. 18. It is believed Panettiere died of an “overdose.”

WE GREW UP IN THE INDUSTRY

Jonathan Jackson took to his Instagram on Wednesday night, August 19 to share poignant words in remembrance of his Nashville co-star. “I have no words to express the loss of our beloved Hayden,” began Jackson. “She had such a bright light within her. She was a sensitive soul. Incredibly funny and witty. Amazingly gifted, with a great sense of empathy and compassion. We both grew up in the industry, although she started even younger than me, but we shared that. A silent knowing of how intense the struggles can be.”

Panetierre started in show business in 1990 at only 11-months-old, while Jackson was cast on General Hospital in 1993 as Luke (Anthony Geary) and Lauras’s (Genie Francis) son, Lucky when he was 11-years-old. Jonathan drew on the parallels in their lives for his remembrance to his late former co-star.

“She was an absolute joy to work with. Focused, spontaneous and brilliant,” continued Jackson. “The most important thing between friends and coworkers is trust, and we had this. Elisa (formerly, Lisa Vultaggio) and I both love and cherish her deeply, like our own sister. She holds that place in our hearts. My prayer for her every day we worked together was that she would know how loved she is, and that she would find the peace that she was looking for.”

WE LOVE YOU, HAYDEN

Sadly, Jonathan concluded with, “It’s not possible to express the shock and grief that so many of us feel right now. Our humble prayers are with her family. May God’s angels carry you to your place of rest and true peace. We love you Hayden. You will always be in our hearts. Always.”

Nashville ran for four seasons from 2012-2016 on ABC, and then moved to CMT for its final two seasons from 2016-2018. The actors on the show could also sing and like Jackson, Hayden had a powerful singing voice that was showcased in the series as well as her undeniable acting chops.

Michael Fairman TV previously shared more of Panettiere’s Guiding Light and Nashville co-star tributes here.

So, what did you think of Jonathan Jackson’s very touching tribute to Hayden Panettiere? Did you love them as Juliette and Avery on Nashville? What have you thought about the ongoing investigation into Hayden’s death? Share your thoughts via the comment section.

BRYAN CRAIG’S MEMORABLE RUN AS MORGAN CORINTHOS

Since leaving General Hospital, Craig’s other roles have included: ABC’s Grand Hotel and Freeform’s Good Trouble, along with appearances in Valor, Walker and American Fighter to name but a few.

Bryan appeared on General Hospital for his initial run as Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Carly’s (Laura Wright) son from 2013-2016. His journey ended when Morgan was presumed dead after a car bomb killed him that was meant for Sonny. Craig later returned for appearances as Morgan in different iterations in 2018 and 2024. Craig won back-to-back Daytime Emmy Awards in the former Outstanding Younger Actor category in 2016 and 2017.

It was back in 2016, that Craig told Soap Opera Digest on his decision to exit General Hospital: “It’s been an amazing journey, but I feel like the time is right for me to say goodbye to General Hospital and Morgan Corinthos. This was not an easy decision and I am extremely grateful to ABC, Frank Valentini, and the entire GH cast and crew for the opportunity and their unyielding support. To the wonderful fans who have embraced and loved Morgan as one of their own, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

So, glad to hear of Bryan’s casting in The Weapon? Are you still holding onto hope that GH will bring back a very much alive Morgan Corinthos that could shake-up the canvas? Share your thoughts in the comment section.

John Oliver Recaps His ‘Days of Our Lives’ and ‘General Hospital’ Soap Opera Experience on ‘Last Week Tonight’

Published

on

By

John Oliver

Last Week Tonight host, John Oliver had his soap dreams come true on not one, but two long-running daytime dramas, heralding it his “hot soap summer” on the Sunday night, August 16 edition of his HBO series.

As viewers recall, Oliver’s tour of soap duty began back in March when he made a request and an offer to appear in any daytime drama that would have him with certain conditions, which included: having a ridiculous and over the top character name, a juicy storyline, and a slap.

Both Days of Our Lives and General Hospital came a-calling for Oliver, taking him up on his offer and in short order. Oliver appeared on GH in the role of the head of the WSB named  Z on episodes airing July 2-6, and then on DAYS in the role of Salem’s chief water inspector, Devlin St. John, in episodes that streamed the week of August 11.

FIRST STOP, PORT CHARLES

On Last Week Tonight, Oliver shared that both soaps delivered, and then launched into a comedic send-up complete with clips from some of his scenes. Starting with General Hospital.

Oliver said, “To General Hospital’s credit, they met all my requirements and more. First, my character got to arrive by a helicopter flanked by a pair of armed goons. And I got to do a dramatic walk during which I bravely shot in the general direction of a guy who was already on the ground. It’s called being an action star, by the way, unless you’re me or Vin Diesel, you really wouldn’t understand. And then in my next scene, I revealed my true identity. (Oliver played the scene where Josslyn wakes up in a hospital bed with Z standing at the side of her bed introducing himself).

He continued, “As for getting slapped, well, they knocked that and me out of the park too, because it turns out that agent’s mother was not happy with me,” explained Oliver, as they cut to the slap of Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) in the WSB Port Charles bureau office on Z. Oliver screamed, “YES! It has everything! A slap, a dramatic closeup, and me doing a voice so wrong, it is genuinely embarrassing. That was my honest attempt at an American accent. I can’t tell you why it’s southern. I can only tell you I was trying my hardest.”

Photo: ABC

SECOND STOP, SALEM

Then, came John’s wrap-up of his role of Devlin St. John on Days of Our Lives, the town’s chief city water inspector. “It is on Days of Our Lives I appeared in scenes alongside soap legends like Jackée Harry (Paulina) and Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie). And the Days of Our Lives team met my demands in a whole different way because instead of being an international spy boss, they wrote me a character a little more my speed.”

Cut to a clip of Oliver introducing himself as Devlin St. John to Rita. He explains, “I’m the only thing standing between this town and a catastrophic plumbing failure. A literal sewage apocalypse. They made me Salem’s Chief City Water Inspector, which let’s be honest, is perfect casting. If you’re going to bottle my essence and sell it as cologne, it would be called ‘Chief City Water Inspector.'”

DEVLIN’S WIG

The late night host also clarified all the reports, that the wig he wore for his DAYS character he actually brought from home. “Now, as for the hair, I agree, it’s absolutely incredible. It’s been reported this past week that it is a wig I brought to set from home. And while it wasn’t technically from home, we did actually provide that wig, and for good reason,” joked Oliver. “I’ve seen myself act. I knew the hair was going have to do 90% of the work. I’ll be honest, I was going for a healthy John Stamos (ex-Blackie, GH) look, but instead, it appears I ended up looking more like Tina from Bob’s Burgers.”

Photo: Corday Productions

“And if you’re wondering whether I got slapped on Days of Our Lives, not only was I slapped by a man wearing elegant silk pajamas (EJ), I also got to slap him, which felt utterly incredible. But wait, I was also stabbed with a syringe and not once, not even twice, but three different times. And if that wasn’t enough, this happened too.” At that point, Oliver played the clip of Rita using the taser on Devlin.

JOHN OLIVER LEAVES DOOR OPEN FOR A SOAP RETURN

The now late night star-turned-soap actor concluded his segment with, “Are you not entertained? Watching that makes me feel the way I assume Matt Damon felt after seeing the first cut of the Odyssey, both proud and impressed that my body could even do that. Which again, you wouldn’t understand. You’re not an action star like I am now. ”

As he ended his recap, Oliver thanked both soaps for playing along, and noting that neither DAYS or GH actually killed him off! Could a John Oliver return happen down the line? Stay tuned.

Watch John detail his soap dreams come to life on General Hospital and then Days of our Lives below.

Now let us know, what did you think of the performances of John Oliver on General Hospital and Days of our Lives? Did you prefer one over the other or enjoy both of his guest arc visits? Could you see Oliver nominated in the Guest Performer category at next year’s Daytime Emmys, even for a 3-episode run on one of the soaps? Let us know in the comment section.
