Beyond the Gates needs to stay Beyond the Gates. Too ghetto too much like the housewives series. Not lifting up just reenforce therotipical behaviors.

Get a life – the show hasn’t even premiered yet to give that critique.

Therotipical, you say? Seriously, the trolling was already tired, but the warped vocabulary truly torpedoed your cause.

Absolutely agree!

A much better look at how this show will roll. I knew it was going to have a trashy vibe though.

Trash is what black is…all about! Get real girlfriend!

That’s a really trashy thing to say. Shame on you.

I’m looking forward to giving this show a try. I certainly hope it’s worth all the hype.

Sorry very disappointed that you took off The Talk and is putting on this. Sorry will not be watching.

Based upon the trailer, I am really concerned about the horrible acting, the Dani/Bill infidelity storyline that we have seem so many times before on daytime TV, and the cheap looking sets. The first month episodes of a soap opera are always tough and it could determine how well the BTG does with viewers and CBS.

Nothing about this looks cheap at all, nor does it look horribly acted.

I have to disagree. The acting does look cringeworthy and the hospital setting looks cheap.

You barely saw a full hospital room… and again, the acting doesn’t look “cringeworthy” at all.

“You barely saw a full hospital room.” Yes and what I saw looked cheap. And Karla Mosley is over the top in performance. So is the actor playing her husband. I’ll be watching because I want the show to do well. But if it turns out to be reminiscent of one of Tyler Perry’s creations, I’m out.

Sorry but I think you’re off on your whole perspective. And to compare Michele Val Jean and company to Tyler Perry is insane; the comparisons keep being made because they’re both shot in the Atlanta area, and I think it’s a B.S. comparison. And Karla Mosley’s character does not have a husband. She has an ex-husband… shows you’re not even paying attention, and you barely even see him act in this trailer, and when he is… it’s bottom line conversation.

If this were a predominately White-cast soap opera, everyone would be eating it up without complaint. And I’m confident in stating that. We won’t miss you, Dennis, nor do we really need/want you watching with that kind of narrow-minded, negative attitude.

The only thing I will disagree with you on, Scott, is that people would be eating this up if it were a traditional, White-dominated soap. My sense of soap viewership these days–and I have sometimes been guilty of this myself–is people making immediate rushes to judgment and rarely giving things a chance to play out and see if they’re any good. I think it’s often justified–the last two or three decades of soaps have been pretty bad, often appallingly bad, in my opinion, with occasional bright spots, so I can’t blame people for coming into things with great skepticism. I think some of that is creeping in here, in the reactions to the clips, and I think that part would be the same if it were a White-dominated soap. We likely wouldn’t be hearing comparisons to Tyler Perry, but we’d be getting something equivalent (and equally . . . bizarre).

Undoubtedly, the critical attitudes are likely amplified by the fact that this is a Black-dominated show. (That’s not to say that everyone offering a critique is biased, but that we’ve already seen some trolling, for example, and some people stirring the pot just for the sake of stirring the pot. In other words, business as usual for a soap-commenting section.) But it’s a stretch to think any new soap would get anything approaching universal acclaim and enthusiasm these days; that’s just not how things are anymore in the world of soap viewing/commenting.

Black or White, the comparison would always stand, because it’s natural instinct. However, there would be less race discussion if it were a White-led cast, and that’s just the truth.

Ex-husband, husband, please shut up.

“If this were a predominately White-cast soap opera, everyone would be eating it up without complaint.”

Wrong! I’m African-American, duh.

Interesting perspective, Dennis. Where you saw “over the top” in Karla Mosley’s performance, I saw her giving real fire and spark to a character whose volatility and impetuousness can drive all kinds of story, and I thought her performance matched the character (what I know of it) very well. I liked KM on Bold and Beautiful, but nothing in her performance there led me to think she could bring the drama the way I’m seeing in the clips.

Everybody, breathe, please. Just breathe. It’s tough putting a new soap on the air–Santa Barbara and Ryan’s Hope, both excellent shows in my opinion, took six months to a year to really find their footings–and it’s probably also very difficult to put together a trailer that will have enough “drama” in it to draw in viewers without giving a somewhat wrong impression of what a show will be like day to day. I have concerns too, but I hope everyone will give this show time to develop. I see real potential.

And even if BTG turns out not to be someone’s particular cup of tea, I hope people will find it in themselves to wish it well. Because if it does not succeed, you can bet your bottom dollar soaps are dead and we’ll never see another attempt to put a new one on the air. And that would be a real shame.

Scott, I have always loved your comments here on this page. You’re a big fan of the soap genre and I appreciate your support for this new soap coming! I wish others would see who’s writing and the production team because CBS is clearly invested in this soap. People need to realize this is good for daytime as a whole. I miss GL, ATWT, and AMC. This is a step in the right direction and I will definitely be watching!

Richard, thank you so much for your kind words. It’s nice knowing my comments are appreciated. Beyond the Gates is more than a step in the right direction: it’s a leap like never before. 25+ years since the last launch of an American daytime soap opera, a genre that we’ve always been told is “dying”. Launching a new soap doesn’t sound like a dying genre to me.

Not intending on watching. Just the fact that it takes place in DC turns me off.

Why?

It doesn’t take place in Washington, D.C. It takes place in the affluent suburban areas of Maryland just outside of Washington, D.C. do your research before you close-mindedly judge.

Reality tv imitated soaps. Now soaps are trying to imitate reality TV. I will watch, but have a feeling this show is being overhyped. People don’t miss and yearn for the trash TV element. They miss and yearn for the multi-generational element of soaps past

Everything about this is juicy, delicious and what American daytime has been missing for a long, long time!!! Bring it on!!

I’m sorry but none of these actors can stand up to the acting and looks of the cast of The Black Hamptons. There is no comparison ,except for Tamara Tunie, but why did they have to ruin her hair by making it blonde, I guess they want to match it to her character. Sorry about the sour grapes and hope I change my opinion after watching a few episodes.

Her hair is gray I think. To make her look older I suppose.

Looks terrible they should just leave re-runs of the price is rite on.

Uhm, it’s not blonde? Tamara Tunie has been sporting naturally grey hair, and that’s the colour it is in all trailers released. Nothing about it is blonde. Everyone seems to want a very stereotypical look of what a Black-led cast should be, and if you want that… stick with BET, because this won’t be it. This cast as Clifton Davis. That alone is noreworthy.

This is why daytime soaps are hanging on by a thread. Constant negativity. Some long time viewers need to really walk away now from the genre and social media aspect of it. A TWO MINUTE trailer causes this much negative reaction in the comment section? The show hasn’t even debuted. Wow. Just wow.

You expect respect for the “new” daytime dramas. Yet, you disrespect the long time viewers and believe they should walk away from the genre – funny those long time viewers kept the genre alive so you can turn around and talk chit about them. Wow. Just Wow.

So dumb no one is gonna watch this in Trump America

That sums this up. All those SAG DEI hires got this show off the ground before Trump took office. Luckily he’s so preoccupied with growing his wealth through the presidency he won’t think twice about this show. Until CBS News angers him. Then all bets are off. This will be the first thing he attacks LOL.

Donald is the ultimate DEI hire.

Just an FYI. The majority did not vote for Trump.

Ashley Jones is the newest addition of CBS daytime’s Beyond the Gates.  The veteran soap actress has posted some teasey Instagran stories revealing the intel; especially her latest wearing a Beyond the Gates emblazoned robe while in her dressing room.

As to who Jones is playing that is still hush-hush. Ashley follows other former daytime notables to Fairmont Crest which have included Greg Vaughan (ex-DAYS, Y&R, GH) and Jordi Vilasuso (ex-Y&R, AMC, DAYS and GL).

A spokesperson for Beyond the Gates confirmed the news to Soap Opera Digest expressing, “We can confirm Ashley Jones will be appearing in Beyond the Gates.” It should be noted: Beyond the Gates does tape four months ahead of air.

Soap fans first met Ashley when she played Megan Dennison on The Young and the Restless (1997-2000). She then went on to The Bold and the Beautiful to play Bridget Forrester in her initial run from 2004-2010 and since then making recurring appearances throughout the next 15 years. In addition, Jones appeared on General Hospital in the role of Parker Forsyth from 2016-17.

Earlier this week, Beyond the Gates was renewed for two more consecutive seasons its 3 and 4th by CBS, giving the youngest soap on the air, a big confidence boost. The series debuted back on February 24, 2025 as the first hour-long Black-led soap opera, and which tapes in Atlanta, Georgia instead of Los Angeles, California.

CBS Renews ‘Beyond the Gates’ for Seasons 3 and 4

Published

Congratulations are in order for daytime’s newest drama series, Beyond the Gates. Today on April 15, the soap opera was officially renewed by CBS for two more seasons, its 3 and 4th.

The network revealed the renewal pick-up at a press briefing led by CBS Entertainment President, Amy Reisenbach. That show of faith takes the soap through the 2027-2028 television and streaming season, while the soap currently continues to air its second season.

Beyond the Gates creator, head writer and executive producer, Michele Val Jean took to X following the news of the pick-up and expressed her gratitude, sharing, “So this happened. Thank you to everyone involved, from the network to the crew, for the support, belief, hard work and dedication everyone has poured into this show. Beyond grateful.”

Photo: CBS

While Deadline was the first to break the news of the young soap opera’s latest accomplishment, Val Jean clarified that Tracey Thomson who is listed at the bottom of the article as one of the series executive producers along with Sheila Ducksworth, Julie Carruthers, Leon W. Russell, Derrick Johnson, Anna Saalfeld and Lela Coffey, is more than that.

Val Jean explained Thomson’s full involvement with Beyond the Gates, noting, “A credit egregiously missing on this article is Tracey Thomson’s. She’s been by my side cranking out these shows since episode 150. We just did 400. She’s my partner, my co-head writer and an executive producer and she deserves all the credit.”

Beyond the Gates is set in a leafy Maryland suburb just outside of Washington, DC, in one the most affluent African American counties in the United States; a posh gated community with winding tree-lined streets and luxurious mansions to call home. At the center of this community are the Duprees, a powerful and prestigious multi-generational family that is the very definition of Black royalty. But behind these pristine walls and lush, manicured gardens are juicy secrets and scandals waiting to be uncovered. And those who live outside these gates are watching closely. These are the places where our characters live, love, work and play. Those who have “made it” and those who haven’t are all trying to navigate life … and some with more grace than others.

The cast is led by the Duprees played by Tamara Tunie, Clifton Davis, Karla Mosley, and Daphnee Duplaix along with Brandon Claybon, Mike Manning, Trisha Mann-Grant, Ambyr Michelle, Colby Nixon, Arielle Prepetit, Sean Freeman, Timon Kyle Durrett, RhonniRose Mantilla, Keith D. Robinson. Jon Lindstrom, and more round out the cast.

So, excited to hear Beyond the Gates is keeping on keepin’ on with two more seasons coming your way after the completion of its current season? Let us know via the comment section. But first, check out our recent conversation on the Michael Fairman Channel with series stars Tamara Tunie, Sean Freeman, Clifton Davis and EP Sheila Ducksworth via the comment section below .
