The secret is out to viewers of NBC’s Days of our Lives, but for Salem’s latest arrival … professional baseball player Paul Narita (Christopher Sean) … that may not be the case to most all that think they know him.

As DAYS fans saw right before the Thanksgiving holiday break, Paul planted a whopper of a kiss on none other than Sonny Kiriakis (Freddie Smith), ending months of speculation that the incoming newbie character would indeed turn out to be gay, and an ex of Sonny’s.

On-Air On-Soaps caught up with Christopher Sean, who had been all the buzz of late, at last night’s Hollywood Christmas Parade where he joined his cast mates as the long-running NBC series was being honored for their upcoming 50th season.

Christopher shared a few of his thoughts on taking on the very topical gay role, whether he sees Paul as a good guy … or perhaps the villain, what he thought of Paul’s kiss on Sonny, and more!

On Days of our Lives, you get to play a professional athlete who is gay which has been a ripped-from-the-headlines story these days when you look at Michael Sam, Jason Collins, and Robbie Rogers, to name a few who have all come out over the last few years.  How did the DAYS brass pitch you the role?

Courtesy/NBC

CHRISTOPHER:  They said, “Are you comfortable playing a gay role?”  And I said, “Yes!”  I talked to my manager about it.  He was like “Listen; at the end of the day, it’s a very controversial thing to play a professional athlete who is coming out.”  And so for me, to be able to be a part of the gay right movement, seriously, it’s like “Wow!”

So, viewers just saw the big lip-lock between Paul and Sonny.  How has it been working with Freddie Smith (Sonny)?

CHRISTOPHER:  He is cool and awesome, and one of the nicest and most humble people I have ever met, which is so nice when someone is a celebrity.

Did you watch back the big reveal when viewers learned 100% that Paul must have a past with Sonny, and is gay?

Courtesy/NBC

CHRISTOPHER: I had forgotten that last Wednesday was the day the reveal aired, and so my Twitter account blew up with “OMG! OMG! OMG!”  I couldn’t believe I missed it, but my parents did DVR it!  So, I am just going to go to their house, and we are all going to watch it together.

Who has been the most helpful on the DAYS set and took you under their wings when you arrived several months ago?

CHRISTOPHER:  I would say Shawn Christian. He is Shawn Christian and I am Christopher Sean. (Laughs)  Our very first day, our stage manager brought that up!  He would go, “Shawn Christian…Christopher Sean …to the set!” (Laughs)   It was one of those awesome moments.  And as for Shawn Christian, he has been a leader and a father figure, and is such a great guy.

So, what can you say to us … do you think Paul will end up being a good guy or bad guy?

CHRISTOPHER:  We are five months ahead on DAYS … but I am also on Hawaii-Five-0, and I am the bad guy on there which is awesome!  On DAYS, I get to play Paul Narita who is aware of his emotions and is intelligent. I will say, his intentions are as honorable as he possibly can make them.

So, the jury is out! (Laughs)

CHRISTOPHER:  What is coming up in the months ahead are so many twists and turns.  It’s going to be amazing.

Does Paul definitely want Sonny back?  Is that his intention?

CHRISTOPHER:  I can tell you he has a past with Sonny, and he is hoping to see what future they may have.

So, are you intrigued thus far by Paul’s story and what is to come?  Do you hope Paul turns out to be a good guy, and give Will a run for his money? Could Paul even win Sonny’s heart? Have you enjoyed Christopher Sean’s performances thus far?  Comment below as the story continues to pick up steam this week on Days of our Lives!

I find it interesting that DOOL, B&B and GH have great gay storylines but Y&R won’t touch the subject. JFP never would at GH, is she homophobic? Does make one ponder the thought, she appears to hate everyone else after all. Kudos to DOOL, GH and B&B for their great stories.

I’ve only watched B&B one year. What gay story line is currently on there? Caroline’s mother?

I think that’s it. Karen and partner, whose name I can’t remember, played by Crystal Chappell. I think if the actress (Joanna Johnson) were available, there might be more story with the pair.

Well I new that Sonny had a lover that was famous in his past so I was not surprised

Still deciding. I ship WilSon so do not like to see anyone trying to come between them. But I will watch the drama unfold and hope for the best.

Me too Kay….Like you, I will be watching the OOC writing for WilSon and hope like heck that they intend for WilSon to be endgame. I like Christopher Sean, but I’m not so sure about Paul lol! Does anyone else think that the days writers could have come up with something more imaginative than a loving couple cheating on each other? Days needs some writers with more imagination than yet another infidelity sl. Having said that, I’m glad we are starting to see more of Sonny and his life pre-Salem.

I hate the fact Days felt the need to screw WilSon up after ruining Ejami. I get happy couple are not interesting in soap land but cheating seems to be the only answer to every freaking problem people have with their partners. This is so sad and stupid in my book.

I’m in love. With Paul. With Sonny. With PaulSon!

Best thing to happen in a very long time.

Christopher Sean is the best young actor I’ve seen this whole year.
DAYS would be totally nuts not to give him a lasting role.

And I don’t see how Paul’s story can be told in a meaningful way if he doesn’t ultimately come out publicly, especially because he wants to tell the whole world how much he loves his partner, Sonny!! That’s a central part of the situation these young men who are forced to NOT tell their own story in the sports, movies (Hollywood!!!) etc. arenas have to deal with: that they are not only denying themselves, but their boyfriend/life partner!!

So, Paul not ending up with his big love wouldn’t make any sense, if not totally destroy this whole story.

I know so many people who stopped watching because they didn’t like the new version o WilSon. Right now, they’re telling me they’re coming back, because they want to see Sonny/Freddie shine again! PaulSon is the way to go here.

I agree…CS is a great find and one of the best new actors to hit daytime in a long time…hope Days holds on to him!!!

Paulson all the way! I barely know Paul but I am really rooting for him with Sonny. You hit thenail on the head.

Unfortunately, I could really care less-just so disappointed in the show right now-stopped recording it.

I was hoping that Paul already has another Salem connection…let Anne turn out to be his older half sister…let her know he is gay, and both Paul and Anne keep it a secret because Paul fears itll hurt his career…then lets see Anne’s reaction when Theresa tells her she has fallen in love with Paul…will Anne tell her the truth…will Paul admit he is gay to Theresa or use her to hide his secret…it most likely wont turn out this way but this couldv’e lead to some very dramatic moments!!!

This is a little off the point, but what is with all the characters calling Anne a cow?

When other characters are referred to as beautiful, etc., she gets labeled a cow.

Anne is a horrible, evil person. It’s sickening to me that they have a character on the show bashing the Hortons. I guess she is the “Mary Sue” of these headwriters.

Anne is a favorite of mine…the actress is beautiful…the name calling is stupid but just part of the sory…shes a keeper…hoping more story for her…the Hortons are one of my favorite tv families…i dont know why some soap fans pick on her…she isnt the only evil person in town…the Dimeras are the most wicked and yet fans love them(i like them and Anne)

The connection I want … Let Paul be an unknown love child of Lucas from his (pre-Sami) playboy military cadet days, thereby Sonny would be caught between two half-brothers! How soapy .. lol! (btw – They’ve had the casting call out for Paul’s mother (Tori) for awhile now, so this could happen.)

You may be getting your wish. I know Lucas is going to be getting a big story soon and Will helps him – some kind of mystery. Maybe it comes about after Paul’s mother comes to Salem and Lucas recognizes her from years ago.

What do you mean? Pauls mother has been on the show for at least a couple of weeks now and also has been being mentioned a lot before that?

I thought Days shot three months in advance, not five.

Looking forward to today’s show and seeing what transpires.

It’s 5 months close to 6 actually !

I love Days!!!!!

I like that Days has finally introduced a third party for Will and Sonny. I’ve never really been able to invest in Will and Sonny because they never had to truly struggle to be together. There was no gay male version of Sami Brady scheming to break them up. It took my favourite couple Carrie and Austin 5 years to get married, but Will and Sonny were married in maybe two. Maybe Will will end up being the bad guy who’s scheming to keep Sonny and Paul apart. He is Sami and Lucas’ son after all.
And I have to give Days credit for casting an Asian-American actor in this role. It’s nice to have some more diversity on the show. If I were running Days, I would have cast Abe’s nephew Ben Carver (Wendy and Jonah’s son) for the Will/Sonny storyline, but Paul will do.

So fighting for his husband makes Will a “bad guy” in your mind. Marriage must not mean anything to you.

We’re watching a soap opera. There was nothing more thrilling than when Marlena and John made love on the conference room table at Titan even though she was married to Roman. And again, I’m not invested in the Will/Sonny relationship because the show hasn’t put made them earn it yet. I’d love to see Will channel his inner Sami and lie and scheme to hold on to his man. That’s juicy, soapy drama.

I hope Sonny and Paul hook up, SO SO tired of Will and his whiney a$$ self. Plus Paul is way hotter than the new Will. Go team Panny, or is it Saul, lol

You haven’t been on Twitter lately, have you?

It’s #PaulSon all the way :))

Is PaulSon

Yeah I am tired of Will playing the victim. .I never have been sold on this latest Will…the former one was a better fit.

So far, so good… I loved the line Sonny had today to Paul: “Oh, that’s right. You’ll never come out of the closet.” And with Theresa in the mix, this should be highly entertaining!

You are referring to Paul as Sonny’s partner already? Sonny is MARRIED to Will so Will is his partner. Paul may think he is in LOVE with Sonny but that does not automaticalky mean Sonny feels the same.

“… for me, to be able to be a part of the gay right movement ”

Thank You, Days : Sony : NBC

right out of the gate : Sonny and Paul flew

their is a sizzling dynamic going on

and I am overjoyed at the potential for exciting story… and character envelop

SOAPBOX : Cheers!

I dislike how they are having Will treat Sonny but I know its all for storyline purposes and its no excuse for Sonny to cheat but its definitely a reason for him to. But at the same time Sonny needs to stand up for himself and let Will know his true feelings.

The athlete in the closet storyline is relevant and interesting but I can’t say I like that Paul is coming in between WilSon. But at least Will and Sonny are getting a storyline and some drama. Hopefully Will having some competition will make him appreciate what he has with Sonny because he seems to be taking it for granted. I have faith in the end of it all Will and Sonny will find their way back to each other.

I love Paul and can’t wait to see his background along with Sonny (sad Sonny was on 3 years and we still don’t know much about him). I want PaulSon. I root for couples if obstacles are in their way and have great chemistry. PaulSon has that. His closet situation which I assume is what ended their relationship and Sonny’s marriage are huge obstacles. Love their chemistry. Other than Brian, Paul is the most spark I have seen with Sonny. Please days. At least let them have an affair or break up WilSon and make PaulSon happen. I was over Will and Sonny for more than a year.

Paulson is never going to happen

First, you should use something to differentiate your name from mine. Add extra letter or number.

Second, PaulSon already happened in the past. Paul predates Will in Sonny’s heart and life and obviously there is still something there if you have seen today’s episode. Just expressing my hopes for the direction I would like to see. You should add something to the discussion instead of acting like annoyed 12 years old shipper.

Never say never.

Why are you acting like two different posters?

@4everDays
I’m the Alex that has been commenting on the Freddie and Guy video and here. I’m not acting like two people. Why are you assuming that. If you read my comment in support of Paulson, you would see that someone else using the name Alex just to be assholes or just didn’t think replied to me with “Paulson is never going to happen” to my original comment and I even suggest they change their name or add something to it to my reply to them.

Had to reply here. Apparently I was wrong to assume that Michael Fairman would not accept people with the same usernames.

Hmm I’m conflicted. The actor is doing a good job, for sure, and the gay athlete storyline with Theresa in the mix is nice. However, I think that we’ve had enough happy fan-favorite couples split up. While I hate how Will is treating Sonny and I definitely think the new Will has less chemistry with Sonny that his predecessor, I’m still a WilSon shipper and want them to wind up together in the end. But I’ll be interested to see where “PaulSon” goes.

Would it not throw a curve ball into the situation, if Will comes back, and Paul falls for Will???

That is major fear I have. I don’t think it would be interesting curve ball. It would just be insult to Sonny’s character and make everything about Will. If you look around on twitter and other places, people are specially excited about this including me because it finally gives Sonny some attention other than hand holding Will and his problems. Plus most people don’t like Guy Wilson as nuwill. It would be total fail on tptb.

In this case I’d be finally done with this show. And when I’m looking around, I’m certainly not the only one. TPTB can’t be so clueless they haven’t noticed that viewers and fans want to see Freddie in a different pairing that allows him to shine again. The huge wave of excitement about PaulSon after barely three days of them together on screen speaks volumes!!!

This show has lost another viewer.

A penny for your thoughts, penny.

Will you please explain your comment. Although people may or may not agree with your thoughts/comments. Most of us like to read people’s opinions.

DAYS lost you because they added one more gay character? Or maybe because gays are seen kissing. Could it be because of the direction the storyline is going?

Commenting in a more detailed fashion may help with your frustration. I know we, the other posters, would have a better understanding.

Its nice seeing him play a ballplayer trying to come out. Maybe he will open the door for are profesional players to be open

I love love love Paulson! Will and Sonny have no real chemistry in my opinion. The sparks are flying with Paul and Sonny! I usually can’t stand the mushy romantic scenes unless the characters really actually seem like they connect. I can’t wait for more scenes with these two!

The Will recast has been a failure so it’s about time DAYS moved Freddie Smith into his own story. Christopher Sean is a great addition to the cast. (DAYS seems to do a better job casting men like Casey Moss than girls like True O’Brien) I did not see this story coming, which is another great reason to avoid spoilers, and I really thought Paul would not be anywhere near the gays of Salem. Smith again has a scene partner with whom he’s got bona fide onscreen chemistry. So give us more of Paul and Sonny, DAYS!

I never thought I will like Sonny with anyone but Will, but after new Will I think he has a great chemistry with Paul.

I would love it if they cast Mia Korf as his mom. And have her have an instant dislike for Southern Eve.

Ha! Brilliant! As long as Mia’s character says to Kassie’s Eve somewhere, “What, are you trying to replace me?” 🙂

I don’t like the gay stories, and do not watch that part of DAYS. When I saw Paul kiss Sonny, I was happy they put it at the end of the episode. I’ve been FF them since then, and will continue to do so. This is one time I hope Theresa goes completely off on someone….Because if he likes men he should not be deceiving women. I’m very thankful Y&R will not put these kind of stories on their show. Kudos to them. DAYS totally destroyed my favorite couple on the show (Nick and Gabi), just to make their gay couple come off like a couple of princes. Now they have their new gay character making a fool out of women by pretending to be straight. Please…Those producers and writers suck. JMHO

Ah yes, this is why I have you on my ignore list at soapcentral. You’re favorite couple was Gack and you hate gay storylines. So you don’t like watching two consenting adults, who just happen to be the same gender, being in love, but the kidnappers are just your cup of tea. You have problems with Paul using women but love Gabi, even though she knew who kidnapped Melanie and where she was but wouldn’t tell anybody just to cover her own butt. There was no way the situation with Andrew would end well for Melanie if no one could find her. She would either be held hostage for years or she would be killed (or both). Also, in both scenarios, I don’t see how rape would not be involved. So, Paul dating women is horrible but what Gabi did to Melanie, or what Nick did to Caroline by letting her be arrested for Trent’s murder even though he did the deed, didn’t put them on your ff list instead they were your favorites. And for the record, neither of those things had anything to do with Will and Sonny so please don’t act like Nick and Gabi were perfect little angels that were thrown under the bus to service WilSon. I’m also not sure what part of Will initially agreeing to deny his daughter so that Nick could raise her, put Will in a good light.

I’m sorry to everyone else for the rant, but nothing pisses me off more than people that have watched soaps for years, and have no problem with adultery, rape, murder, etc, jump on their moral high horse when there’s a gay storyline on the show. That’s some screwed up morals right there.

Please put me on your ignore list here as well. 🙂

I love Paul! I think Sonny needs someone who will treat him better than Will is treating him right now. Paul’s not doing much better yet, but he’s got potential. Maybe Will will come back with a Paul of his own?

And Bring Back Charlotte Ross as Eve!

Do we really need another triangle? Being it would be gay doesn’t negate the fact that Days overdoes the triangle thing.
Sonny has made it plain to Paul he is married, is happy, family & friends have surrounded them with love. Just because Will is being a stupid idiot is no reason that would be a deal breaker. Other marriages have survived worse.
I just do not honestly want Days to go another round of happy happy til married, get divorced and move on.
I think a former love coming in while Sonny is rather vulnerable might be interesting.
Frankly, I am sick and tired of couples being madly in love, bedding and kiss off. I am sick and tired of Salem marriages going the same route. If the writers are so inept they cannot write for couples together, then Corday better get on the ball and start looking around . He should have been doing so long ago.

I think Christopher Sean is the best looking cast member I’ve seen in a long time. I find his steady gaze disarming. I hope he is a good guy but if he isn’t, I hope he stays on the show. I’m a little sick of Will and his underhandedness but because of his daughter I guess he has to stay on the show. I would like to see Sonny and Paul work it out. Also get rid of Paige’s mother, she’s boring.

Hope Paul is a regular on Days forever . . . . .

He is so dam good looking and a hell of an actor, much better then Will. Hoping is gets to stay for quite some time and hope he and Sonny will end up to to gather . Will has to go!

i started watching DOOL when freddie was casted after he left 90210. watched for a good long time then it kinda got boring esp when the new cast wil came. Started watching again when Paul came..now my last name is narita! lol! I really hope paul will be regular in DOOL for a very very long time with sonny! #paulson SOLID!

Days Of Our Lives

DAYS OF OUR LIVES: Marlena Looks Back at 50 Years in Salem

Published

on

By

The June 22 episode of Days of Our Lives reminded us all of why Deidre Hall is iconic in the role of Dr. Marlena Evans. Here we are 50 years later, and Marlena is still the heroine of the long-running soap opera, and Deidre remains one of the most most recognizable names in the history of soaps.

To pay tribute, and to look back at the life and times of Marlena, the story starts with Marlena flipping through a photo album of her with John (the late Drake Hogestyn) over the years. As she misses him dearly, she gets a knock on the door and its none other than John’s son, Paul Narita (Christopher Sean).

With Andrew (Colton Little) in Salem working on a case, he sits down with Marlena, who says she can’t believe its been fifty years since she first arrived in Salem! Cue: Deidre’s first scenes on DAYS when she finds Mickey Horton (the late John Clarke) playing chess against himself inside the mental institution she worked.

Courtesy/Peacock

THE FLASHBACKS OF MARLENA’S LIFE

From there, viewers definitely got the cliff notes version of the history of Marlena and entrenched within them, some of the biggest moments in Deidre’s enduring run.

Paul thinks he is looking at 70s, and early 80s Marlena while going through her scrapbook, but he is actually looking at her twin, Samantha (Andrea Hall)Cue: when Marlena confronted Samantha about impersonating her, and then later getting a call on her radio show from the Salem Strangler (Jack Coleman as Jake Kostichek) who killed Samantha thinking it was Marlena.

In the present, Belle (Martha Madison) has arrived at this time to meet up with Paul, unaware of this trip down memory lane. She wants to go over the findings in the chess board mystery Stefano willed to Marlena and John, in private with him, since Marlena previously said she wanted nothing to do with it.

Back to the history lesson, Marlena speaks highly of Don Craig and even though their marriage didn’t work out, she could find a path forward with the new love her life, Roman Brady. (Wayne Northrop however is never shown, possibly to keep the story focused on John as Roman for confusion sakes?)

Paul sees a photo of a young Carrie (Christie Clark) in the album and Marlena says she was such a godsend after losing her baby. In fact, Marlena says caring for Carrie prepared her for her having and raising her own twins, Eric and Sami. Cue: The twin visiting Marlena in the hospital.

JOHN AND MARLENA’S LOVE CONQUERED ALL

Then, in a way to get through and incorporate the wild storylines only Marlena could have been in, she tells Belle and Paul, she has been through so much in her life, how lucky she was to find John, and some of the most unbelievable experiences no one could imagine. Cue: Marlena possessed by the devil and levitating from the bed. Next, John confronting Marlena being the Salem Stalker, where she admits she killed Alice Horton, pretends she needs help, then pulls a gun on her beloved John!

The comment is made by Paul and Marlena, that she literally has been to hell and back and she could not have survived were it not for her beloved John. Cue the big emotional highpoint clips; The Pier Scene! Marlena steps out of the fog when John sees her from a distance. After believing she was dead for four years, here she was before him in one of the greatest reunions in a soap opera love story in history. What followed were other times of the life of times of Jarlena.

Courtesy/Peacock

MARLENA’S ‘GIFT’ FROM STEFANO HAS A NEW CLUE

When Marlena makes a brief exit to the other room, Belle fills in Paul on the chess set Stefano left her mother and the photo of the Lire. Paul said he will investigate. Marlena comes back into the room and overhears, and says to promise her if things get dangerous he will back off, she does not want anyone hurt by Stefano’s games.

As the episode comes to a conclusion, it’s just Belle and Marlena going through the photo album giggling about 70s hairstyles and all the memories. Belle speaks on the impact Marlena has had in everyone’s lives, and that she is both the heart of their family and the heart of Salem.

An end card comes up acknowledging Deidre Hall’s 50th anniversary as Marlena, and we fade to black.

So, what did you think of Marlena’s walk down memory lane? Were you happy to see the flashback clips utilized throughout? Were you touched by the scenes and the performance of Deidre Hall? Let us know what you thought of Deidre’s 50th anniversary episode via the comment section below.

Deidre Hall Marks 50 Years as ‘Days of Our Lives’ Dr. Marlena Evans

Published

on

By

If you have ever tuned-in to the soap opera genre over the last 50 years, and witnessed some of the greatest romances, drama, classic and outlandish storylines of all-time, you would have seen Deidre Hall smack dab in the middle of it as longtime Salem heroine, Dr. Marlena Evans.

It was 50 years on this date, June 21, 1976 that Hall first appeared on DAYS on NBC which was its home for 57 years before it moved to its current streaming platform on Peacock in September of 2022.

In Hall’s first episode she was introduced as a psychiatrist treating Mickey Horton (John Clarke) at Bayview Sanitarium after he suffered a complete mental breakdown. Mickey learned that his brother Bill Horton (Edward Mallory) was the biological son of Mike Horton (Wesley Eure) with his wife Laura (Susan Flannery) and that he had been lied to for years and years. From that moment on, the rest is television and soap opera history. Days of Our Lives put Hall front and center.

Photo: NBC

There were so many heartbreaking and shocking story twists involving the beloved Marlena. One of the first was the historic crib death of baby DJ (Don Jr.) in 1980, Marlena’s infant son with Don Craig (Jed Allan). The story had never been told on daytime television and Hall’s performances received accolades from TV critics to fans when Deidre received thousands of letters from grieving mothers who had gone through the same thing in their own lives.

DAYS also brought Deidre’s twin sister, Andrea Hall Lovell to the show as her on-screen sister Samantha, who had a grudge and even locked Marlena up in a sanitarium and took her place! Fast-forward and in 1982, DAYS launched the Salem Strangler story where everyone believed Marlena was his next victim, only it turned out to be Samatha. Jake Kositchek (played by Jack Coleman) was revealed to be the actual serial killer.

Later, Deidre would assume the role of Marlena’s look-alike, Hattie Adams in 2004, once played by her sister, Andrea. Over the years, Hattie has come back to Salem and caused trouble giving Hall a chance to play a different type of character, then the always upstanding Marlena.

THE LOVES OF MARLENA

Deidre Hall struck gold with all her leading men: from the late Jed Allan, to Wayne Northrop as Roman Brady, and of course, her enduring love story with the late John Black played by the iconic Drake Hogestyn. In fact, Marlena’s 1986 wedding to John (who was believed to be Roman at the time) remains a favorite of fans to this day.

TOP MARLENA STORYLINES OF ALL-TIME

While the list is long, here are several that were some of the memorable during Deidre’s five decades in Salem!

The Possession (1994- 1995)
Considered one of the most ambiguous, outlandish and unforgettable story arcs in soap opera history, then Days of Our Lives head writer, James Reilly went there! Marlena was possessed by the devil! That included; the demonic eyes, hissing at father John (Black) the priest, morphing into creatures, and the classic levitating in her bed! It became a cultural phenomenon and cemented Deidre Hall’s status as a daytime television legend. Just ask Ryan Gosling!

Photo:JPI

The Affair with John Black (1993)
John and Marlena’s forbidden love could not be denied and they had passionate affair, while she was still married to the real Roman. Problem was her daughter, Sami (Alison Sweeney) caught her mother having sex with John on a desk that changed Sami forever.

The Salem Stalker Mystery (2003-2004)
In a shocker, Marlena was revealed to be a serial killer who bumped off several Salem favorites residents who were all alive on the island of Melaswen (spelled “New Salem” backward). Turns out, she was manipulated and gaslighted by Andre DiMera (Thaao Penghlis) to do the “killings” and had no memory of her actions.

The Pier Scene (1991)
This remains Michael Fairman TV’s all-time favorite Deidre Hall moment, which featured some of the best acting in the storied careers of both Hall and Drake Hogestyn.

In the story, a presumed-dead Marlena returns after four years. One foggy night on the pier, John is alone, and Marlena steps out of the fog to reveal herself, and is reunited with the love of her life. You can watch it any year, any decade, and in any moment, and it will have you reaching for the hankies again and again. (best music score fo a soap scene of all-time too!)

Photo: NBC

Kristen’s Secret Room Reveal (1997)
Marlena was caught in Kristen Blake’s (Eileen Davidson) elaborate web of lies, when she was held hostage in a secret wine cellar/room until John managed to track her down, leading to an iconic on-screen reunion. The classic catfight between Hall and Eileen Davidson was one for the ages.

It should be noted that Maison Blanche, Queen of the Night, Possession, Aremid and Lady in a Cage were all a part of classic DAYS storyline and all featured Hall at the epicenter of it from 1993-1996.

THE RECENT YEARS OF MARLENA

In recent years, DAYS brought back the possession 2.0 storyline under then head writer Ron Carlivati in 2021 where the devil leapt back in Marlena after taking advantage of a frail Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes)

In 2025, viewers watched the end of the love story of John and Marlena, as John succumbed to injuries sustained in an explosion saving a vial of medication needed to bring Bo (Peter Reckell) back to life. Marlena has been a widow on-screen since June of 2025 as Hall as portrayed the good doctor struggling with her grief and to move on with her life since his death.

One story that never goes away is Stefano DiMera’s (the late Joe Mascolo) obsession with Marlena, his “Queen of the Night.” Even in death, Stefano is toying with her from the great beyond with the mysterious chess set and the missing “pawn,” that he had gifted John and Marlena in his will. The mystery is currently unfolding on all-new episodes of Days of Our Lives.

Tune-in to Days of our Lives on the Monday, June 22 episode as Marlena looks back at her 50 years in Salem.

Share your congratulations to Deidre Hall for this incredible 50-year milestone as Dr. Marlena Evans on Days of Our Lives in the comment section. Then let us know, what is your all-time favorite storyline or moment in the life of Marlena over the past 5 decades? And, just for kicks, and to celebrate this amazing milestone, here is Marlena levitating below circa Christmas Eve 1994.

Al Calderon Reflects on ‘Major Chapters’ Coming to an End on ‘Days of Our Lives’ and ‘Brilliant Minds’

It’s been a bittersweet time for Al Calderon. The talented actor/singer/songwriter has watched from his vantage point to roles he loved so much come to their conclusion for different reasons.

In a heartfelt message posted to his Instagram story on Saturday, Calderon took a moment to share how grateful he was for the opportunity to play Javi Hernandez on Days of Our Lives, and nurse Nico Silva this year on NBC’s second season of Brilliant Minds. Currently, Brilliant Minds has two more episodes that will air on June 24 and the series finale on July 1.

Calderon expressed, “As I sit here reflecting on this lovely Saturday afternoon over the last two years of my life, I have two major chapters closing that have been part of my life every day for the last two years. “I’m just unbelievably grateful for the chance and the opportunity to be a part of something so much larger than me,” continued Al. “I (will) love Days of Our Lives forever, my family. Thank you for supporting me and supporting my decision to take the leap of faith and believe in myself and, and tell other stories. You know, it’s never goodbye. It’s always ‘see you later’ to me and just leaving with love and leading with love.”

Al concluded with a special mention to some very important people, the fans: “Thank you to the fans and the support from everyone, the lovely messages. So this next chapter, hopefully it’s not a dragon, hopefully it’s a gold coin.”

Calderon’s journey on-screen on Days of Our Lives began in October of 2024 and concluded this month. In one of his last appearances Javi was asking a favor from Gabi (Cherie Jimenez) before bumping into his ex, Leo (Greg Rikaart). In story, Javi has a new romance with Gus (Michael Ocampo), while fighting his feelings for Leo. The role of Javi will be played starting on June 30 by Jacob Martinez who takes over the role.

NBC decided to cancel the Brilliant Minds, after it split up the airing of its second season which began in the fall of September of 2025 and the back-half started airing after a long break this past May. Calderon joined the medical drama staring Zachary Quinto for the new season, which sadly was its last.
