Days of our Lives Airs Last Episode of Its Historic Run on NBC; Heads Exclusively to Peacock Monday

Friday marks the final airdate of Days of our Lives run on network television.  For almost 57 years, and for 14,430 episodes, the series has been a part of NBC’s afternoon line-up, and is the network’s longest-running scripted show in its history.

As previously announced, starting on Monday, September 12th, NBC will put in its place a one-hour news program, NBC News Daily.  The hourlong program is anchored byKate Snow, Aaron Gilchrist, Vicky Nguyen and Morgan Radford. It will also be streamed simultaneously on NBC News NOW and Peacock.

While NBC News Daily bows on the network, DAYS moves over Monday to Peacock where all new episodes will drop exclusively every day and very early in the morning, so you won’t have to wait later in the day for its upload.

DAYS will be part of ‘Peacock Premium’, and though a fall promotion, you can sign up to watch for $1.99/month for new subscribers or $19.99 for an entire year. This is down from its normal tier price of $4.99 a month.

When speaking on the shift to Peacock, DAYS executive producer, Ken Corday told Soap Opera Digest: “You will probably be getting more show content after February of next year (the show currently has episodes filmed through February 2023) because we don’t have to limit the show to 38 minutes with 22 minutes of commercial time. On Peacock, with the lower subscription, you get four minutes of commercial time, and with the higher subscription, you get no commercial time. So, that’s good. Also, the broadcast quality on streaming is better than network broadcast from transmitters, just a technical point.”

Within its history, Days of our Lives was the first soap opera to broadcast in color when it debuted on November 8, 1965.   The show was expanded from 30 to 60 minutes back on April 21, 1975.   The soap opera is currently renewed through September 2023.

Congratulations to cast, crew and creatives for an amazing achievement on network television and now on to the next leg of Days of our Lives journey into streaming.

Can you please find out if they will ever address the Bo is alive story? And will they finally add old episodes to Peacock so die hard fans can go back and watch some of the epic storylines of the past?

The “old episodes” thing was just a rumor, and Hell only knows where it started. Peacock itself is probably capable of streaming an entire archive of the show… as evidenced by the fact that you can pull up all 47 past seasons of Saturday Night Live on the site right now. But that’s because NBC owns SNL and Peacock is under the same corporate umbrella (Scumcast) as NBC.

NBC has never OWNED Days of Our Lives (even though it has never aired anywhere else in the US) so they don’t have control over where all the old tapes – going back to 1965 – ended up. That would be Sony and/or Ken Corday.

Assuming all these old episodes even still exist (there have long been rumors of them re-using video tapes of old episodes to record new ones) it would be a huge job to convert all of them to a streaming format. 57 years x over 200 episodes a year… that’s going to take a little while.

As far as the Bo story goes…. Now that Days itself is on Peacock, I’m not even sure if the need for a “Beyond Salem” exists anymore, which would mean the whole story with Bo “waking up” (like Han Solo being released from carbonite) would have to be addressed on the “main” show. Peter Reckell is one of the people who made one of the YouTube promos for the Peacock switch, so perhaps that’s a sign that he’s still working on the show. You don’t fly in from New Zealand to film a 15 second YouTube video, right? Since Days has 6 months of episodes in the can, you may or may not see him until February, but you can bet your soul he’s going to show up eventually.

They used old tapes for new shows for AMC and OLTL. I hadn’t ever heard about that being the case with Days. NBC can also always license the archive of past shows to their streaming service the same way Paramount+ has with Y&R and B&B.

The CBS soaps don’t air in Hell, so I don’t keep track of them, but they are both owned by Sony, so if they have done that for Paramount+, then they should be able to do it for Peacock. Assuming the original tapes still exist, and somebody at Peacock/Scumcast is willing to set up the server space for such a large archive.

Satan – Peter Reckell did not need to fly in from New Zealand to do the YouTube video. He could have done it in the comfort of home

Sure he “could have”. But since his promo is shot on the same DiMera mansion set (right under Stefano’s portrait) as most of the similar promos were, it’s not at all likely that they would reproduce the set for him at home in New Zealand.

And it doesn’t look like a “deep fake”/green screen type of CGI trickery either.

They stated for a fact multiple seasons will now be available but i don’t know if that’s as of the 12th or next February.

YouTube has all the classic content you could ever want!

I dont know what is happening I dont get peacock.Frankly I am not happy about the move.To replace it with another news show is garbage. They have new shows on from 4 am to 1pm.What a load of crap.Bring back Days.

ARE SOAP MORE RELEVANT IN 2026?

With the daytime soaps being mentioned in the mainstream of late, including a recent New York Times essay, Ryan Gosling’s high praise of Days of Our Lives icon Deidre Hall (Marlena), Late night host, John Oliver asking to be cast on a soap after doing a bit on his show, it seems daytime drama may be culturally relevant again, or is it really?

During the chat not only will we get Sheri’s takes on all the series she wrote for, but also ask, “Why soaps? Why now?” Why are audiences rediscovering/missing emotionally-connected storytelling? What did our genre provide viewers emotionally? And what has current programming gained technically but lost emotionally?

Join us with your comments and questions for Sheri in the live chat, as we talk the pros and cons of today’s daytime soap opera and daytime television landscape and delve into Sheri’s soap writing history and the characters she created or had a penchant for and learn about her new endeavors and outside projects.
