The UK said goodbye at Christmastime, and now the U.S. will begin to see the final installments of Downton Abbey beginning Sunday, January 3rd on PBS. (9PMET/PT).  Making their bittersweet farewell are members of the beloved cast, including Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Jim Carter, Joanne Froggatt, Penelope Wilton, Phyllis Logan, Laura Carmichael, Brendan Coyle, Lesley Nicol, Sophie McShera, Robert James-Collier, Allen Leech, Kevin Doyle, Samantha Bond, David Robb, Raquel Cassidy and Michael Fox.

The Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning hit drama begins its final stories with episode 1:  Extortion and downsizing threaten Downton Abbey. Change is afoot at the hospital. Mrs. Hughes poses a delicate question. Daisy speaks her mind, and Anna and Bates wait for the word.   The nine episode final season will end its run on March 6th.

E Online recently caught up with some of the series stars as they reflected on what fans in the States will see: expect tears, warm goodbyes, and some things left unsettled.  Jim Carter (Mr. Carson) noted: “We don’t all get blown up in a gas explosion or get abducted by aliens or anything like that, but the stories are tied up rather elegantly and we sort of wave goodbye to these characters everybody has grown so fond of in a satisfying way.”  Phyllis Logan (Mrs. Hughes), Elizabeth (Lady Cora) McGovern and Hugh Bonneville (Robert Crawley) also weigh-in on the wrap-up of this beloved show from across the pond.

In watching Downton Abbey Sunday I realized just how artfully Julian Fellowes has taken viewers through the “times they are a changing” journey for a way of life. It was easy to be invested in the characters and story. No gimmicks or effects, just good storytelling. And all of the actors are superb. This kind of program will be greatly missed.
