The Cast of ‘General Hospital’ Delivers the ‘Power Performance of the Week’

General Hospital fans knew when Sam McCall suddenly died of a heart attack (for a yet unspecified reason) it would provide plenty of material for the cast who have been a part of Sam’s on-screen story over the years. Sadly, in order to have this tearjerker of a drama, we had to say goodbye to Kelly Monaco, who for 21-years played the fan favorite character.

As the story picked up last week, all of Sam’s loved ones eventually learned she passed and the grieving was so raw and gut-wrenching. In the episodes that followed Sam’s death, the ensemble cast of GH portrayed their heartbreak making most fans reach for the hankies several times over. There will be no question that come Emmy time, Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis) has to be a lock for a Lead Actress nomination for her realistic portrayal of a mother trying to comprehend the unimaginable.

In addition, Dominic Zamprogna (Dante) has been tremendous and has been given the ball as the grieving fiancé who doesn’t know how he is going to move on without Sam. Meanwhile, Sam’s longtime love, Jason Morgan, played beautifully in scenes with poignant and understated performances by Steve Burton, seems to have the mandate of breaking the bad news to anyone else who loved Sam.

Throughout the week, there were other knock-it-out-of-the-park moments. In particular, a young Finn Carr as Rocco, who admits to his grandmother, Laura Collins (Genie Francis), that he feels responsible for Sam’s death. The heartbreaking moment when Spinelli (Bradford Anderson) learned his ‘Fair Samantha’ was gone, and the touching scene where Spinelli says that Sam was the first person that gave him a chance, while Jason said it was because of her that the two are such good friends now, and let’s not forget that hug at the door.

Then, there was the grieving Davis girls, each handling despair over the death of their sister in different ways. Kristina (Kate Mansi), wailing at God in the hospital chapel and collapsing in her brother Michael’s (Chad Duell) arms, while Molly (Kristen Vaganos) is less histrionic, but trying to hold it together only to realize she cannot fight back her feelings. Then, there was Alexis needing her girls to be there for her, and each other and to stop the in-fighting!

We saw Carly (Laura Wright) heartbroken at watching Jason and Sam’s son, Danny (Asher Antonyzyn). struggling with the loss of his mother, but saying he has to be strong for his little sister, Scout (Cosette Abinante), while Scout is missing her “mommy” as she tells her father, Drew (Cameron Mathison). Jason also had the task of telling Diane (Carolyn Hennesy), who was also visibly shaken and upset, and we have yet to have the scene where Diane comes to comfort her best friend, Alexis.

Courtesy/ABC

On the Friday, November 8th episode, Alexis, who is planning the funeral for her daughter, tells Dante she thinks Sam’s kids should live with her, which was also another hankie-inducing moment. Elsewhere, Lucas (Van Hansis) is blaming himself for the death of his half-sister, believing there must be something he did wrong in the surgery, or in her post-op care, and is comforted by his ex, Brad Cooper (Parry Shen).

With so many heartfelt and gut-wrenching moments abound, Michael Fairman TV names the ensemble cast of General Hospital the resounding choice for the ‘Power Performance of the Week’.

Even if Nancy gets a nomination I don’t expect her to be happy about it, because of the fact that Kelly Monaco got kicked off of the show and now Trump being the president again, We know she’s so political so I wouldn’t expect her to be truly excited about it, She could say that She’s grateful for the nomination but that’s about all you can get out of her.

You could have stopped at Kelly being fired! Her politics are just that, her politics and her expressing it her right.

Why did she get fired! Guess I’m behind times.

It’s still a free country.

What in the world does Trump, have to do with this?

Can’t we at least immerse ourselves in the fantasy world of Port Charles for an hour without being reminded of the world around us and all of its issues….c’mon ppl

Totally agree why oh why cant people leave politics out of EVERYTHING. If you dont like it then leave this country. No one would care

Amen.

It’s pretty funny, all these people going to leave if Trump won. I don’t see anyone leaving…..

It’s posturing. These narcissists seriously believe that their feelings are the only ones that count and that the world really cares what they think or feel. These people are seriously mentally unhinged and truly need psychological help and major coping skills. So sad that we’re talking about adults who you would think would more sane and mature by now in their lives. Nancy and all the other left celebrities need to realize that no one cares what they do or say and that their job is to entertain us. They need to keep their mouths shut when it comes to politics. They’re not that special to think what they do or say will hold any clout. America has spoken and these people were wrong. Unfortunately, they will never acknowledge that they were. Again, narcissistic behavior won’t let them admit it. Get a hold of yourself already it. You lost. Life goes on

The answer to that is that President Trump has absolutely nothing to do with it. Some of us watch the show for entertainment the same reason we read spoilers and such about it.

Hands down the powerful performance came from a very different storyline on GH with Sasha (Sofia Mattsson)…. Sofia killed it as she discovered that Robert Scorpio is her father. Now we need Robin to return to meet her half-sister, I mean Kimberly came back to meet her half-brother, Peter August. Sofia has a had great material with scenes with her mother Holly and that whole dynamic. (Regardless of the first cousin thing with Cody)… Sofia proves that she’s on this fascinating storyline which means I am sure we will have more of Tristan Rogers! Loving the scenes with Holly & Robert. And… the fallout of the Cody cousin thing and finding out her father is Robert, then Sasha hit the sheets with Michael! I really loved Sasha with Brando… When she lost Liam, Sofia was once again, fantastic.

Maybe they can get Joan Collins to play Holly’s mother, who raised Sasha.

I think Joan Collins would be perfect as Holly’s mother!

What You Know Joe Collins played her mother on Dynasty

I’ve never been a fan of Alexis nor her portrayer but nevertheless give credit where credit is due. She was in too much shock to pass out and actually still is. I loved it when she told the girls she needed them and how she said it. Definitely a nomination. Jason and Dante in their different ways but still their portrayers are doing a phenomenal job and the ones supporting them all and her brother… Yes, I agree with performances of the week and we haven’t seen what’s to come.

The outstanding performance was Stone Cold’s gut wrenching emotional and tearful loss of the love of his life. All others were magnificent, but his stands out the most. Several Emmys should be won.

I agree the ensamble cast did an outstanding job, which we expect from vets like NLG, Steve and Dominic. But I was most impressed with Finn Carr. He was fantastic. He is one of GH’s hidden treasures. I hope we see more of him going forward, especially in the teen scene. Carr handled his scenes with Genie like a seasoned pro.

Agreed.

I haven’t watched GH in a few years but, Sam was one of my favorites to know she’s no longer going to be a cast feels weird .

I turned it off for the first time today, was so bored… and Kirstin crashing cars with Natalia?? Yes, I was so bored.

Get a story going…or I think I will be gone

I thought Nancy was fabulous but the way Jason’s scene went down brought the tears flowing.
Also I agree with Phil the remark from Devin Murphy was snarky plus everyone’s has the right to state their opinions. Remember the “First Amendment “.

Beautifully portrayed. So sorry to see Kelly go. But the acting from multiple actors has been award worthy. Maybe the passion infused seems of grieving have inspired a change of heart. Writers, write her into their memories for 20 more years. Unless she is blessed with bigger and better opportunities. Which is a given, of course.

Right on but special shout outs to the characters of Alexis Davis and her almost son in law for consistently powerful scenes Hers touching ( sonny n Diane)and heartbreaking and bewildered by Dante.

Jason is the only Actor who never gets to display emotions , but listening to stone cold saying goodbye to the love of his life, the only woman he ever loved, OMG!!!
That was so real!
Jason’s acting career is at the top of every soap Emmy.
Dude u were so real. I taught it was your real life wife.

I agree, as most everyone here, definitely freaking powerful!! Jason was undstated, as he always is, it was his look of pure devastation that got me crying watching him, and his conversation with Sam was OMFG just heartbreaking of course Everyone did a phenomenal job!!!!

I kept wondering though… tell me if u did too… WHY with this much out-pouring (writers wrote) HOW could they kick Kelly off the show????
I mean Man they ALL poured their hearts out, and as I’m watching, crying lol, I’m talking to the TV!!! “She is soooo loved, WHY make her leave???” When any of them would say how much she cared, she was loved, how she affected their lives, I’m yelling “exactly, so why make her leave???”
You guys wrote these great scripts for her departure, knowing how loved she is by us tooo, so WHY kick her off???

Idk, maybe it’s just me, maybe I’m “too into it” but …. just my two cents…

It’s so strange…we all know it’s just a soap.but we get so immersed in the story..it seems real…like I hate Ava and the last one married to Sonny. But it’s just a story !!!

I think Nancy and Steve both deserve an Emmy nod for their scenes last week at Sam’s bedside! They both had me in tears!

Spinnelli absolutely outstanding. Alexis. Jason, Dante. Everyone WOW . I have lost a son
In his 30s. Totally unexpected. It hit me right in my heart and my stomach. Unbelievable acting. KUDOS.

Sam was a powerful lady with so much love to give even to save a woman’s life. I am going to miss Sam as she was one of my favorite characters

I agree with everyone, especially about firing Kelly and I would quit watching this damn show tomorrow, but I would be just spiting myself.Ive gotten to the point of either accepting the poor writing and acting, also long pauses between some of the good plots, while filling in with ” who cares” crap and making us wait days for the good stuff to pick-up again. Wondering if this is a new tactic?

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

Published

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).

Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.

Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON

Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”

Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).

Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.

“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?

During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.

Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.

You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.

Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Reconnects with Danny; Tristan Roberts Arrives in Port Charles, Lots of Nods to #16

Published

General Hospital’s 16,000th episode was packed with little reminders through points in today’s script that the ABC daytime drama series has set another milestone and it paved the way for the return of fan favorite and newly nominated Daytime Emmy Lead Actor nominee Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The 16,000th episode also introduced viewers to the new surgeon in Port Charles Dr. Tristan Roberts played by Dean Geyer.

Here are the key takeaways and what went down on the July 13 episode: Tristan and Jason are seated next to each other on a plane heading to Port Charles. Throughout the flight, a beaten up Jason has flashbacks to being thrown into, and being held captive in a cell and tortured. It appears Jason is suffering from some form of PTSD from what he was put through after being dragged out of Port Charles by the WSB months ago.

As the plane prepares to land, Tristan tells Jason there would be a car waiting for him once they land and to enjoy the rest of his life. Later, Tristan arrives at the nurses and doctors hub at GH and approaches Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). He tells her his name and that he is the new surgeon on staff.

A REUNION PLUS A HEAD NURSE DEFENDS SONNY

Meanwhile, at the end of the episode, Jason is outside the Quartermaine boathouse looking bewildered when he runs into Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), who is so thrilled to see his father, and the two hugs each other as tears are shed.

Elsewhere, Elizabeth tells Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he thinks its a great idea for him to get the 16th seat on the hospital board, but when it comes times to convince Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) of that, things go awry when Tracy, Laura and Sonny try to work things out. After Tracy launches into Sonny about killing Alan and Monica’s son AJ, Sonny walks away dejected.

Next, Sonny runs into Elizabeth, where he informs her what happened with Tracy. So what’s a head nurse to do? Elizabeth marches into the conference room and reminds Tracy of all the different donations and ways Sonny has contributed to the hospital from the Stone Cates AIDS wing, to the Michael Corinthos Center for Pediatric Head Injuries as well as his constant support each year for the GH Nurses’ Ball.

WSB WAR SCARS

Then, in one of the best parts for longtime fans of the series, Elizabeth talks about her legendary grandparents, Audrey and Steve Hardy and she tells Tracy they would have wanted Sonny to have a seat on the board for all the good that he has done for the hospital. After Elizabeth states Sonny’s case, things took a turn and Tracy and Sonny wound up shaking hands as Sonny is board member #16.

In the how great was it to see Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) together scenes department, the pick-up of last Friday’s cliffhanger is played out as the two former lovers fill each other in on what has gone down in their lives in the last several months including Valentin admitting he had been living in Carly’s attic, and Anna realizing she was kidnapped by Cullum, Sidwell and Cassius Faison. During their conversation, Anna sees the hallucination of Peter August (Wes Ramsey) right while Valentin is standing there.

Courtesy/ABC

Later Anna was on her way to saying goodbye to Valentin, when the two share an emotional hug. After Valentin made his exit, Peter reappeared and warned Anna to not let Valentin distract her because she has important work to do. Anna answers, “I know.”

So, what did you think of General Hospital’s 16,000 episode? What do you think is wrong with Jason? What is the important “work” that Anna has to do? Were you glad to see Sonny get a seat on the hospital board, or not so much. Weigh-in via the comment section. But first, check out the scenes on Jason and Tristan’s long flight to Port Charles.
