General Hospital Overtakes The Young and the Restless As Top-Rated Soap In Key Demo!

Courtesy/ABC

General Hospital has a lot to celebrate this week and the lone ABC soap opera continues to be on FIYAH!  According to ABC, in the latest ratings for the week of October 7-11th, it finally has happened!  GH beat The Young and the Restless as the top rated show in the key female demo of 18-49 for the very first time in 2 and a half years! And that is not all, they continued to be  at#1 for the 8th straight week in the women 18-34 target demo, and are oh-so-close to make it a trifecta, trailing by just 7% behind Y&R in the women 25-54 demo!

Here are the numbers from ABC’s press release via Nielsen ratings:  “For the first time in over two-and-a-half years, General Hospital ranked as the #1 program in daytime in Women 18-49 (735,000/1.1 rating) – since week of 2/21/11 – placed #1 for the 8th straight week in Women 18-34 (285,000/0.8 rating) and came with 7% of  The Young in the Restless for #1 in Women 25-54 (938,000/1.5 rating), closest competitive finish in over two years its  – since week of 8/15/11.

Impressively, this week stood as the series’ most-watched week in over 3 years in Women 18-34 and in over 2 years in Women 18-49 – since weeks of 9/27/10 and 9/26/11, respectively.  General Hospital surged by 40% in Women 18-34 (285,000 vs. 203,000), by 17% in Women 18-49 (735,000 vs. 629,000) and by 12% in Women 25-54 (938,000 vs. 840,000).”

So what do you think of General Hospital’s stellar performance and overtaking the long seated Y&R in the key women  18-49 and for the 8th week in a row of women 18-34 demos?  Has GH rocked it over the last several weeks, or what?  Looks like Kimberly McCullough’s return as Robin and the story it brings with is  ratings gold! Weigh-in!

I’ve been watching “Young and the Restless” for 32 years — that’s a lot longer than I have been watching “General Hospital” yet even I have to admit I don’t care about Y&R anymore.

Not since show killing witch Jill Farren Phelps came aboard with her bloated boy toy Steve Burton.

Joshua…dude…bloated boy toy, huh??? Man, that is too funny…HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! But, hey, it’s true. And, calling Jill Farren Phelps a show killing witch is one way of describing that VERY insufferable woman…LOL!!!!! Yep.

You are SO right!! Have Frank/Ron be TPTB on all 3 shows.. Congrats to GH…I am a loyal fan for the last 2 years after a 15+ years of not watching. I am tuning in to DOOL too, for the first time ever the last couple of years due to Gary Tomlin involvement, and the show has me hooked. All these men did a excellent job when they were in OLTL and they continue the tradition on their respective shows!!

I would FLOVE FLOVE FLOVE to see both AMC and OLTL return to network programming. Nothing wrong with Hulu & OWN, but if ABC wants to gain a huge share of the daytime audience (and we ARE still out here!!!) they could & should bring both back. AMC, GH, OLTL…change up the order, give it a fast pace & some crossover storylines? Oh, I’d be down for that!!! I disagree about Days though – the out-of-character writing has driven away more long-term viewers than it’s brought in new viewers – that’s why they’re dead last in the ratings so consistently.… Read more »

I always find it very amusing that demographics only go to viewers to age 54! As if long time viewers don’t exist after their 55th birthday?
Attending a charity event with about 350 fans of Y&R in Vancouver annually, there were two sisters attending this past July who were 90 and 92. Doesn’t that they watch even count? Maybe there needs be a statistic of the ages who are home and watch the Daytime Dramas. After all, the retirees are growing in numbers every year and are home to watch.

The demographics are absurd – that’s part of the reason for the On-line inceptions of AMC and One Life having problems. I would hazard a guess that many many fans of both these shows are 50+ ~ they would almost HAVE TO BE since the shows have been on for over forty years. Although many of us could never forgive the so called “execs” at ABC-TV for cancelling these two iconic shows, it would be great if ABC would take them over again as Half hour increments. Why would it be so difficult to have a half hour of All… Read more »

Well said, Wendy.

Why MUST our friends and family members who are over 54 be seen as nobody worthy of being included?? It’s plain rude to treat people like wasteland material – many of whom have helped keep show alive through their loyalty AND through passing down their love for the show to their children, grandchildren, friends. etc, intentionally and unintentionally. I eventually ended up becoming a GH viewer because of my family and my nostalgia of them watching it.

Unfortunately there is a deeply held opinion–and one that I am not sure is backed up by any solid research or evidence–that people above a certain age have very deeply set buying patterns and thus are not reached by advertising. Thus they are largely disregarded as viewers. My suspicion, however, is that this is more of an excuse than anything else: the networks need a justification for focusing on youth–which is what they really WANT to do–and this is what they have come up with. It sounds somewhat plausible, but I’ve never seen any solid evidence, and I think it… Read more »

Understands the genre? Gimme a break. Cartini have turned GH into the same cartoon that was One Life to Live. And of course the ratings are rising now that Kimberly Mc has returned. And next on the list demographics are important but it’s total viewers that keep a show on the air. YR still maintains 4.5 million viewers while GH cant keep 3 million, lol. And final comment on the demo of course Cartini’s lame stories would interest an immature crowd. Older viewers just watch this show because like me theyve watched it for decades and they just dont want… Read more »

No way GH will ever reach BB or YR’s total viewers. BB internationally distributed and is the most popular America serial in the world. GH hasnt had and kept 3 million viewers in yrs. GH’s ratings have been extremely inconsistent since Cartini took over. They have spiked and fallen again and again. That proves that Cartini are a gimmick, tabloid regime. They have zero idea how to create consistent, long arc stories that keep viewers. GH’s ratings are only spiking now due to Kim ( Robin) returning and that is a limited engagement. When the furor over her return dies… Read more »

Everyone realizes that international viewers don’t count in the Nielsen ratings, right? Santa Barbara was once the biggest draw internationally (in regard to soaps) and had awful Nielsens because the domestic viewership didn’t grow. When it was cancelled, it was still the biggest soap internationally. Putting aside the criticism of Valentini/Carlivati (which I can both see and not see, if you understand what I mean) and what they’ve done, it’s not as though either B&B or Y&R has been solid (creatively speaking) either. B&B in particular is vulnerable because I don’t think the effects of Susan Flannery’s departure have really… Read more »

Y&R is terrible..
I do not want to watch a soap that will make me sad over a child’s death, to watch every bodies pain is not good for any person to experience those dark emotions, not good at all .. Y&R is very depressing..
I do not want to be day time depressed..

GH has variety!!! it has humor!! GH goes every which way!!!!
It gives surprises and shocks, love, hate, mystery, great stories and is the #1 soap for entertainment!!
I do not feel sad or depressed watching GH !!

I agree GH at least writes a story- they are creative and inject humor– y&r simply took a dramatic situation that any high school student could write the dialogue for and it would still be dramatic because of the subject matter. It is lazy writing– at least GH seems to remember what a soap is supposed to be and remembers how to actual write one- the pacing of reveals, the teasers before commercials, the last scene of every show ending on a cliff hanger — balancing the dark with the light– the stuff that makes you want to turn in… Read more »

I dont get you people. YR gives intelligent, adult drama or at least they attempt to do so. GH writes sophomoric, immature stories that even a ten yr old would shake his head at. DG, I agree with you completely. Especially the comment about Genie Francis. RC writes like he is producing a comic book. I wish they would bring back Guza to work WITH RC. Guza’s emotional depth and story integration paired with RC’s comic relief and balance among the broader cast would take the genre back to its glory days (with or without TG).

Days used to be my top watch show, but more and more I’m turning to GH as the best way to spend my viewing time. I love the pace, the characters and the way they interact with each other. Days tends to stall their stories and treat viewers and characters like they are brain dead. GH deserves the upswing for delivering quality story telling. Not only has Kimberly’s return been ratings gold but bringing back the entire Scorpio family is golden as well. GH now has genuinely likeable characters (unlike a few years ago when everyone worshipped at the Sonny/Jason throne). Y&R is too dark, no one is likeable, they destroyed Sharon…I guess the new recast young characters are supposed to be the likeable ones? The early 80’s fans aren’t gonna stick around forever. The reason GH is doing so well is FV and RC are moving the storylines, vets are being utilized, fan fav’s are back, and RC ia remembering to incorporate GH’s rich history into his storylines. The same cannot be said for Y&R, IMHO Delia’s death was just done as ratings stunt, but it was done by GH in 2011. I am so happy for GH. Oh! Y & R is going to sink even further. After all JFP has hired her partner in crime, JP to be HW. JP was the writer when ATWT, OLTL, AW and she was the biggest reason those long term soaps bit the dust. I hope Y & R is also booted off the air; it has reached the pinnacle of staleness. The difference is in who spends money to buy stuff. After the age of 54 people are not spending money on housing related stuff so much. They are more in a phase of downsizing and living on a fixed income. Their kids are typically out of the house, so much less groceries, laundry stuff, etc. They are set in their ways and are not likely to swap out their Crest to try the new and improved Colgate.

GH has been a ball to watch lately. I love how campy and over the top it is. DAYS has been a lot of fun, too. Y&R is just a depressing shell of its former glory. Even B&B is more enjoyable.

Y&R is terrible.. Y&R has very little entertainment value, no variety, and is stale and now we are to suffer through a dark story engulfing Y&R is sadness and depression with stale stories.. Soaps are entertainment fantasy day time viewing; for entertainment.. Y&R no longer holds entertainment value, it offers depression not entertainment.. I do not want to cry and be depresses/feel sad watching a tv show.. So, I do no longer care to view Y&R which makes me feel sad and ruins my day .. The stories are very long and go on and on and on to the… Read more »

Congrats gh! It’s been a thrilling ride of drama, comedy and rich storytelling . Both F valentini and r caveralti need to be commended for the work they have done along with a talented writing n directing teams and an all star cast. They worked magic on one life to live and continue to do the same on gh. I am not saying that they always get it right but this team knows how to tie stories characters and the shows history better than anyone. Keep up the great work gh

And to think I was going to give up on GH a few months ago! As for Y&R, if Lyn Marie Latham didn’t kill the show I doubt Phelps can make it any worse. Her ship will sail, too.

I am happy I still have a soap to watch which I enjoy (GH)! The stories have me at the edge of my seat lately! Nicholas saw Robin in the lab (Hurray)! Look out Sabrina but here comes Robin ! Anna & Robert together rocks! Like old times…

What is it with CBS and dead children? Y&R has now killed Delia and Cassie before her. B&b killed Amber’s baby and then killed Steffy’s baby and made her infertile. If people are tuning out it shouldn’t be much of a mystery why. How about some romance, relationships without triangles and skip the dead children.

Not that a childs tragic death is ever a good thing, but its been a story told for years on many shows. And the material had finally given these excellent actors something to exercise their acting chops on.

Its about time General Hospital beats out Young and the Restless! For number one I have no clue how Y and R is number 1 all the time? General hospital puts Y and R to shame! The only good thing about Young and the restless is JASON! Wish he would come back to GH to be with Sam and Danny! Cheers!

Stopped watching Y&R after Jeanne Cooper died. Also, it makes me sad to see Steve Burton on Y&R–he belongs on General Hospital. Found his character on Y&R to be boring so I stopped watching. Love General Hospital. I’m addicted.

I watch them both but GH will never be a better soap than Y&R.

I watch them both and I think that people are hating the Delia dying story and are sick of the way everyone treats Adam. The Jack vs. Victor stories are tired and the show is lacking balance. GH on the other hand is fun! I tune in for an escape, not to be depressed.

Love General Hospital since the OLTL actors helped pump up some tired story lines. Great writing with the new team. Excited to see Robin back in the story line! Love Kiki, Silas, and Franco characters. Best soap on TV!

General Hospital’s Nancy Lee Grahn Chats On Her Daytime Emmy-Nominated Performance and Its Significance

When the nominations were revealed for the 49th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, General Hospital mainstay, Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis), was recognized for her stunning work in the Alexis-centric standalone episode which honored her 25th anniversary with the ABC daytime drama series.

Grahn, is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner.  She won back in 1989 in a tie for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her work as Julia Wainwright on Santa Barbara along with All My Children’s Debbi Morgan, and again received the honors in that category in 2012 for her work on General Hospital.

Now. she is vying for the gold in 2022 in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category against other formidable actresses including: B&B’s Kimberlin Brown, DAYS Stacy Haiduk, Y&R’s Melissa Ordway, and her GH castmate, Kelly Thiebaud.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Nancy to talk about her decision to enter the Emmy race this year, her powerful and moving scenes, why this nomination is significant and important to her, and her take on some very important social issues of our time.

Always candid, insightful, combined with great humor and wit, here’s what Nancy had to share below, and make sure to check out GH this week when sparks fly between Alexis and Gregory (Gregory Harrison). Will he turn out to be the new beau in Alexis’ life? Stay tuned.

Congratulations on the Emmy nomination.  How do you feel about being in the running again, especially with the material from your 25th anniversary episode?

NANCY:  You know, I don’t submit myself if I don’t think I have something, and I didn’t last year.  This year, I had the one show, and the first reason I submitted myself was I had the episode that was worthy of the competition. These judges have to sit, and watch this stuff, and very often, it’s hard to watch soap opera scenes.  It really is, unless you’re in it.  It’s a different kind of material that most primetime people aren’t used to watching.  So, it’s tricky business.  I don’t want to put them through anything too awful. I don’t want to torture them and I’ve judged before. It can be a bit tedious. So, for me to submit myself, I thought, it has to be something that isn’t going to torture another human being. The second thing is, older women get marginalized the older they get, and they get diminished very often, and every time we get nominated, it means something different to me.  This time, to me, I want it to somehow be symbolic, or a shoutout to women who are still producing, who have been doing their job for a long time and are still doing it good enough, and that it’s still worthy of respect and recognition.

When we were at the GH Convention back in March, I played the scene on-stage for the fans in attendance of when Alexis goes over to the corner of Kevin’s office and heals her younger self.  You saw the reaction just from the fans.  It’s such a beautiful moment within the story.  What did you think about how the standalone episode was crafted?

NANCY:  It was a different experience for me because GH co-head writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor, and script writer, Scott Sickles gave it the attention, but even more to that, they allowed me to participate in the creation of it.  They allowed the director, Phideaux Xavier, to participate.  We all sat in a room.  They said, “You know what?  Make it how you’re comfortable with it.”  There were so many people who gave it time and effort, and Phideaux gets a lot of credit because he came up with a lot of ideas.  So, the little girl in the therapy room wasn’t initially a part of it.  That was Phideaux’s idea, and they let us alter things, and they allowed me to write some words that meant something to me with the character.  Our producers, Michelle Henry and M.K Weir, who I both adore, were also a part of this.

That is great to hear that you were involved in the collaborative process of the creation of the episode.

NANCY:  We read through the whole script, and we worked it like you would on primetime. We went through it like, “Does this moment work?  Does that moment work?  Does this make sense?  Does that make sense?”  We never do that in soaps.  We don’t get to that.  So, it was a gift to me.  It really was. Chris and Dan, and Scott and Phideaux, and the two producers, generosity in gifting me that experience and making sure that it was to everybody’s liking, was really very special to me, and it meant a lot.

Did you come up with the key lines which summarized Alexis as a person and her journey: “I’m Alexis Davis, and I’m a fighter, and an idealist and an advocate?”

NANCY:  No. They designed it, but we were allowed to enhance and contribute creatively to it, and, we don’t normally have the time to do that.  They don’t have the time to – and you can’t allow people to do that with every episode, to be creatively participating, because it would turn into madness with everybody.

Then, when it came down to choosing the scenes from your anniversary episode to include for your Emmy submission, was that a challenging process of which moments to go with?

NANCY:  I just told a little story with it with the time that I had, and so, I edited it with a friend of mine.  I did a sort of pre-edit on it, I’m good at that, and handed the timeline to our editor, who nicely put it together. It took very little effort.

In my humble opinion, I think that episode featured one of your all-time best performances.

NANCY: Thank you. There was a nice effort from everybody, from the lighting to everybody else, and all the effort Phideaux put into it.  He worked so hard on that!  It was fun for us.  It was like the old days where you really got to work something out.

Photo: ABC

It truly harkened back to everything we knew up to that point about Alexis and her past as well, and included a montage of scenes over the years.

NANCY:  I think it was M.K. who put that together, but when you’re working at the pace we’re working now, to have to sit and put together a montage of twenty-five years, that’s not an easy feat.  Nobody has time for that anymore, but they did it, and like I said, it was really, really appreciated.  My only thought with it is that I wanted it to be relatable to other people.  I didn’t want it to just be some, you know, self-indulgent Alexis episode. I knew that by bringing in the little girl and talking about people being hurt in their childhood and how that makes somebody feel that it was probably relatable to many people, and so it became meaningful to other people and not just me.

Do you think you’ll attend the Daytime Emmys? I know the last time you won you were not present.

NANCY:  Yeah, I’m planning on it.  I mean, barring anything happening! (Laughs)

Does it feel nice to be recognized by your peers?

NANCY:  Of course, it does.  It always does, and way too often, women who are still producing well in their jobs, don’t get the respect and the acknowledgment for it.  So, that’s why I’m saying, this is no small thing, and that I want other women to know that I know that, and that I wish for them the same thing.

What was the reaction of your daughter, Kate and your fiancé, Richard, when you told them you were Emmy-nominated?

NANCY:  Richie goes, “What is this?  Your 18th nomination?” (Laughs). You know what I mean?  It was just kind of like, “Yeah, sure, why wouldn’t you be?” It wasn’t like, “Oh, my God!”  It was like they kind of expected that.  That was nice!  I’m glad they feel that way.  I’m glad they weren’t surprised.  They were like, “Sure!  Of course, you would be.  Why wouldn’t you be?”  I said, “You know, it doesn’t always work like that!”

Photo: JPI

Now comes the part of having to find a dress and all that goes with it for the red carpet.  Do you enjoy that part?

NANCY:  No, I hate that part.  That is my… oh ‘boohoo’, you know?  I mean, I have to find something to wear.  Also, the older you get, that becomes so much less important, and the more makeup, and the more hair, and the more foofy, the more ridiculous I look. I start looking like Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.  You’ve just got to keep it simple.

You were talking about women and ageism.  Do you not feel that also exists for men?

NANCY:  It exists for men, but it’s not at all on the same par as women.  I mean, men still get paid more than women, and men still are valued more than women.  I mean, there are exceptions, but if you look in any place of employment, even the soaps, you will typically find the men making more money than the women, and the older the women get, the less they get.  Life’s not fair right now.  It’s fairer than it was, but still the equality game is not won yet.

Photo: JPI

I know how much all of this means to you in terms of equality for women, and people being run out of their jobs because of their age.

NANCY:  It’s just a reality.  It’s not something that I’m hopeless about, but I have a story to tell.  I’ll tell it when the time is right.  It’s life!  It happens in every field everywhere.  When my mom was 70, she was still producing the exact same way she was producing when she was 30, and she got run out, and was replaced by a man who was 40 or something, and there was no particular reason for it.  It was just, “You’re done.  We decided you’re done,” but like I said, it happens everywhere, in every line of work, and that’s why I just wanted to give a shout-out, when you still, after 36 years, can be recognized or shown respect or acknowledgment for what your do.  It’s a very big deal that I am appreciative of and grateful for.

So, rooting for Nancy to win the Outstanding Supporting Actress prize? Happy she was nominated for her work in the the milestone episode devoted to Alexis? GENERAL HOSPITAL: What’s Up With Elizabeth?

Friday’s episode of General Hospital, finally moved the story of the haunting of Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) along a bit, after it has been a very slow build for the audience. As it turns out, and with the new developments, it appears that Liz has been going in and out of a catatonic state, while sleeping walking.

With a tip from Violet (Jophielle Love), Finn (Michael Easton), who is chatting with Gregory (Gregory Harrison), recalls Liz was having trouble sleeping and was that she given a sleeping aid. He thinks he may be on to something so he decides to go to Liz’s house to talk to her.

Meanwhile, Liz comes to her house and tears Finn and Violet out of the picture that Violet drew, and then gets a scissors and starts cutting pieces off of the drawing, bit by bit.

Cameron (William Lipton) comes home and see his mother.  She does not respond to him and appears in a trance-like state. He is getting more upset by the moment, and then Finn arrives on the scene.

Finn is able to get the scissors from Liz, and also get her to snap out of her trance.  Liz talks with Finn and wonders what is happening? She doesn’t even remember how she got home.  When Cameron fills Liz in on what she was doing … cutting up the drawing and all … Finn tells Liz he believes she is the one who is haunting herself.

In tears, if what Finn is claiming is true, then it is she who is responsible for slashing her dress, setting fire to Franco’s studio, and hitting Chase over the head.  In that moment, a teary-eyed Liz recognizes that something is terribly wrong, saying, “What’s happening to me?”

Finn promises Liz they will get to the bottom of this as Cameron looks on.

So, what is happening to Liz and why? Is this just a case of another sleeping pill storyline on soaps, where someone does not recall their actions or where they are going in the middle of the night a la Nighttime Hope on DAYS? Is someone controlling Liz to make her do these things?  Is something else physically wrong with Liz causing her behavior? Share your thoughts on this storyline … and where you think this is all heading via the comment section below.
