Katie Couric Admits She Had Low Expectations For Her Talk Show! Question Is, Will It Find Its Footing?

In a new piece out today from the New York Daily News, Katie Couric admits she had low-expectations for herself with her new talker, Katie, especially when compared to Oprah Winfrey and taking over her time slot.

Couric stated “I certainly didn’t have high expectations for myself.  I wanted to do a show that I thought was interesting, compelling and enlightening, and while I knew that there were going to be some inevitable comparisons to Oprah Winfrey, I tried to throw water on them every chance I got.”

Already with less than two months on the air, while Katie stumbled in the ratings a bit, there had also been persistent reports that her EP, Jeff Zucker is going to leave his post and head up CNN!  Couric weighed in by saying, “I only want the best for Jeff.  He’s been a great friend to me and a very trusted colleague — and that’s something that’s hard to find. Right now he’s giving the show 110%. And I think he and I work really well together.  We collaborate well, and I think that until that changes, that’s what I’m going to focus on.”  Zucker, who is in the control room for every taping of  Katie, declined to comment.

Katie also now harkens back to her hard news days with a special episode today on Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy and its aftermath, where she chronicles her weekend visit to Staten Island and the Rockaways, sharing “I am a news person in my heart of hearts.  It was very important for me to get out and see what was going on firsthand and try to share the human side of this story. Until you talk to the people most affected by it, you can’t understand the true impact of this storm.”

So where do you stand on Katie’s talk show?  Have you watched it?  What are your thoughts?  Do you enjoy her as a interviewer and host?  Do you think the series is in trouble? Weigh in!

We all had low expectations, and she has delivered. This article sounds like an attempt at damage control. She is a phony. Nothing about her seems real to me. She thinks she is cute. She’s not.

I definitely think her show is in trouble. She may try to be a hard-hitting news person again, but that will be phony too.

you go girl i agree

haven’t watched it at all. No interest in another talk show.

yes!! i will never watch

ME TOO!!!!!1

Odios………..don’t care will never watch her show………..she never was watchable, the networks have always cramed her down our throats. She is no Oprah or Diane Sawyer or even Barbara Walters. Katie seems very phoney to me, she does not have a sincerity about herself that the afrorementioned ladies project……..What a waste of another hour on ABC. I only watch GH on abc DAYTIME.

I agree 100%! She’s been around awhile and she is no longer sweet little Katie from the Today show. As far as I’m concerned she had her 15 minutes and now she’s done. I have not watched her and I never will I only watch GH and that’s it for me. CBS dumped her lets see what happens to her here.

At the first mention of her show on this website, I stated Katie was a has been. She worked her fifteen minutes of fame for several years. She should consider herself very lucky. The bottom line is she too boring. Watching a slice of Wonder bread is more exciting! Even her reporting is half ass. She traveled to Queens and Staten Island to cover Sandy. New Jersey suffered major devastation through out the state did she even bother to go there??? ABC must have been out of their minds to think this slice of white bread could surpass our beloved soaps. What would you rather watch a slice of stale white bread or the soaps with stories and good looking hunks? What would make you afternoon break sweeter????

Never liked her on the Today Show, why would I ever sit through an hour of her own show? Always thought she was a fraud. Only people I have ever respected were Phil Donahue and Oprah Winfrey. The rest are pointless.

yea sal she is phony, and i also did not like her on the today show

oh yeah remember cbs new she flopped there also

i still do not understand why ABC would even consider giving her a daytime talk
show, they are losers over there
i only watch GH and that is all!!

and if they cancel GH like they did amc and oltl i am gone from abc totally

She has a great personalty and she’s a fine journalist. I don’t watch everyday but I tune in when she has an interesting guest. I’m sure the show will work out. It’s unfair to criticize her for the demise of soaps. They cancelled AMC & OLTL long before ABC announced her show.

Believe me, her show was waiting in the wings when they cancelled our shows. But hey, if you like her & enjoy her show . . . . good for you. But I will never get over glancing at the clock at 2 p.m. central time & thinking GH is on right now (or should be) Weird that soaps are over by 2 p.m.

LOL!

ABC sucks! They show the same people over and over ! And over and over again! Katie needs to stay home!!!

you are so right it is not like she needs the money!! ABC sucks like u said
theey should cancel it now and she needs to retire or stay hom

If she’s a news person in her “heart of hearts”, why not stick with what you really love? Why move on completely into fluffy celebrity interviews and makeovers? And more importantly, why dismantle our daytime lineup for something you’re not 110% into?

This is very true. But Oprah started out the same way as Katie. She was a journalist before becoming a talk show host. So I couldn’t begrudge Katie for following in Oprah’s career path.

But according to her, (what she says above), she doesn’t want the Oprah comparison ;). LOL yeah right!

In all seriousness, I think Oprah always wanted more than being a journalist. Maybe she didn’t think ‘media mogul’ but inspiring people and creating a platform for others to do good things with and impacting their lives was always a dream of her’s (as she’s said recently on an episode of Oprah’s Next Chapter). Whereas Katie clearly says journalism is her #1 passion.

Her show will never be on in my house! GH is the only ABC show I watch!

Ditto!

Ditto too!

I felt the same way when NBC cancelled Another World. I vowed I would never watch any NBC program except Days. Well it has been over 10 years since AW was been off the air, I watch other NBC shows and life goes on. Do I missed AW, sure I do, it was a great soap, but after a while I realized not watching any other program on that network doesn’t hurt the network and will never bring back the show. I respect those you who are trying in their own way to make their voice heard, by boycotting the network, I wish you well in your attempt to hold to your principles.

You are right! Life goes on. I was always an avid fan of One Life to Live. When I started to watch episodes of Another World in the late 80’s and early 90’s, I fell in love with the show. So I would watch OLTL and tape AW. I can’t believe it has been over ten years since AW was taken off the air. It feels like yesterday. In a perfect world, OLTL and AW would come back for good (And Ryan’s Hope too).

me too!! GH only

Ummm, first of all, you didn’t take over “Oprah’s” timeslot, you stole GH’s! Duh. Boy for a newswoman you sure don’t care about the details. And secondly, never watched, never will. Buh bye, Katie.

You got that right! I always got on my treadmill at 2 p.m. central (on my days off work) & watched GH. It does NOT work for me to get on the treadmill at 1 p.m . central. I hate this new time for GH but will take GH anytime we can get it.

same here it comes on eastern time here at@2 p.m. and Gh has had the 3pm
here for as long i can remember

and alot of my friends who could watch @3pm cannot now due to
school pick up of their children and they are disgusted as well
with ABC and KATIE!!

Amen….to all. Sorry Michael what you see most people don’t ……..but all opinions matter in the wonderful USA.
Only in America .

I will not watch her show the only show I watch on ABC is GH ! They spent more money on her show and her salary than it cost to produce one year of OLTL and what was reported to have been spent would have kept OLTL on the air for almost two years and yet they blamed Money as the reason for OLTL b ring canceled for this reason alone I won’t watch anything but GH

OMG-YOU SAID IT. Damn it-OLTL should still be going strong. I hate ABC & do NOT support one second except for GH.

you said it all gloria i feel the same

I agree with you gloria………..

Same here! I HATE talk shows especially any garbage that replaced a soap!!

EXACTLY. I could not have said it any better myself. OLTL would be making ABC money. Karma is a b – – – -. LOL.

Agreed! AMC & OLTL would have done fine in ratings. …sigh. Stupid people at ABC.

Ditto!!!

ZERO interest in ANY talk show much less any new talk shows!!! I say everyone stop watching this crapatola and watch the four remaining soaps on the air!!!

YES. Totally agree.

I watch GH in the afternoon & nothing else.

Sorry, Katie Poo! Can’t work up any sympathy for you. ABC/D should have stuck with the soaps on their schedule, instead of replacing them with talk/reality shows that no one wants to watch!

I can’t blame her on her career path. Nor can I blame her on the decisions of the ABC/D network.

What I do have to ask is why she chose the ABC/D network and not NBC for example? Considering how well she did on that network, why not return back to NBC?

Well she is on NBC where I live… In fact she comes on the same time as GH at 2:00p.m. For me its Wesh(NBC)..

blanderson cooper’s daytime talk show got axed w/c is great! chipmunk couric should be the next to get axed. there really should be a backlash against these liberal shills polluting the airwaves. they have completely lost any credibility. thus the public’s distrust of these hacks is at record highs. they still spin and shill and filter the “news” thru their liberal agenda. there should be a pushback against these “journalists” who claim to be unbiased! it was fantastic when romney humiliated the mainstream media at the smith catholic fundraiser dinner! he directed accurate jokes at their bias and worship for their liberal god obama. chipmunk couric looked really annoyed bec she was right behind romney as he was humiliating her and the rest of those partisan water carriers! these liberal shills need to stop landing talk shows. there should be a conservative pushback against their advertisers to get these obama sycophants away from the daytime landscape. it would benefit conservatives and moderates who refuse to be brainwashed and it would benefit soaps to boot!

bc, get a grip! No conservative media? You must not be familiar with Faux, er, I mean Fox News or the many loudmouth dbags such as Rush Limbaugh. Expand your dial and you will find someone who shares your narrow-minded views, I’m sure. How that could possibly benefit soaps I can’t imagine. They are known for their take on cutting edge social issues.

Fox news is the most TRUSTED news organization. Pew research even rated them most unbiased and bipartisan during the election coverage while MSNBC was rated most biased towards their lefty god obama. BTW Fox’s ratings are higher than MSNBC and CNN combined! Fox is the only mainstream moderate media while the lefties are: cnn cbs abc nbc msnbc fox npr and the flailing current tv! And Rush Limbaugh is great! His assessment of politics is savvy. He’s a great conservative and very wise! The public would benefit from less liberal trash like chipmunk couric on daytime tv shilling and water carrying for the democrats. maybe that would clear the schedule for a racially diverse soap opera that does not demonize conservative beliefs.

Okaaaaay, bc, now I don’t know if you are just joking or scary. Enjoy your soaps.

bc I agree 100%!! Fox News is the ONLY non-biased new media outlet out there! Katie Couric is the top leader of biased-reporters!! Look at some of the articles today, many saying Obama won because of how he and Romney were portrayed by the media!! I am deeply disturbed by the election, the only good thing is Katie’s talk show failing!

Well maybe Fox News isn’t as bad as I thought. I thoroughly enjoyed Carl Rove’s display of bitter, desperate, deep denial at Romney’s early, blow-out loss. America has spoken loud & clear. Listen & get on board or get out of the way. Be part of the solution or you’re the problem.

Lynn A : fox is definitely the most unbiased. majority of their anchors obviously lean right but they have lefties like geraldo and bob beckel while the left wing “news” are brimming w/ propaganda shills that stack any discussion heavily for the left. for example: abc will be discussing abt immigration. they’ll have 5 lefties along w/ the host george snuffalafagus against 1 conservative ann coulter. while fox for example would have the right leaning host and the right leaning guest against 1 lefty guest. fox is more balanced and people bash it bec it goes against the mainstream media narrative. even if fox gets the highest ratings the left propaganda “news” are too vast: cnn abc nbc cbs cnbc msnbc and the flailing current tv. obama has the mainstream media lapdogs and the hollywood brainwashing machine and effective fear mongering. of course he was going to win. idiotic women thought that romney would take away their contraceptives and abortion access. low info voters thought mormon romney would take away coffee! call it the snow ball effect of fear mongering helped by the old media and hollywood acolytes. the greatest problems for voters are the betrayal of the mainstream media and the poison of hollywood. conservatives have been painted as racist by hollywood thru the crap they disseminate. the label has stuck and extricating that racist label is like removing bubblegum from hair. this racist depiction resonated w/ hispanics and yet the gop has more hispanic elected officials than the democrats! the gop needs to rebrand themselves from this racist label that hollywood has put on them and foisted onto popular culture. what’s more disturbing is hollywood is the most racist group of people and yet they’ve managed to brainwash the public to thinking conervatives and hence republicans are racist. the less hollywood lies being spread the better w/c makies it great that current tv is for sale and the nytimes is hitting new stock and advertising lows and shill chipmunk couric’s daytime talkfest is flopping and that blanderson cooper was fired!

You are right all the main stream media is all biased. They own Obama. The movie Obama’s America Love Him Hate Him You don’t know Him 2016

Why are we talking polticis ???? No one will agree when it comes to this topic .What has this to do with Katie ?? And how did the President get in on all
this?

I don’t understand all of this????

I like Katie, but all daytime talk sbows, especially news ones, are the same. Dull, bland, dumb, stupid, etc. I will only support soaps, mostly Days, bit that isn’t too good now either. I hope that her show and The Chew are cancelled. While its true that AMC and OLTL are probably never returning, I think the low ratings for this and The Chew, as well as The Revolution being cancelled and Anderson ending, brought a clear message to ABC and other daytime networks. That message was that soap fans will not stand for mistreatment and cancellations while crap keeps polluting our TV sets. I will not be watching this, and I also hope The Talk comes to an end.

An end on daytime programming(talk shows)…..

Her show sucks. I watched the debut episode and then stopped. It was boring and bad. I predict a cancellation next year. This just shows you that soaps need to stay.

Yes I agree the soaps need to stay!!!!!!!

I love “Katie”. It’s refreshing for the daytime talk show medium. She has had a lot of amazing episodes and guests on the series. I watch it every day at 3PM. I enjoy it! #GoKatie

I don’t watch any daytime talk shows..I rather watch the soaps anyday than these kind of shows…There are entirely too many talk shows on the T.V. And they don’t
belong on daytime programming….And I don’t find them refreshing at all..I don’t want info or to be talked to death for one hour…I pick Drama over talk shows anyday…Talk shows are something I woudn’t like watching each day..Can’t identify
with these kind of shows..They are not entertaining at all…Again give me DRAMA,
emotions & heart-warming stories !!!!! Not blah! ,blah,blah…..

Talk shows are interesting AND entertaining. You’re just too close-minded to even try and see it. Keep living in a box Susan, as it’s good for you and only you.

Gosh, Susan M. I agree 100% & all this mess that follows below is way unnecessary. You were just stating your opinion. Glad Scott loves Katie! Good for Scott! But I sure miss all our shows!

What’s to like about Katie’s show????? You forget it as soon after you watch it. It’s not memorable…..Like the soaps are…She is not my cup of tea and NEVER will … She won’t last 20 to 40 years… She is lucky if she lasts 6 months to a year….She is temporary show…

I don’t forget it after I watch it Susan. I don’t hate a show simply because I’m a soap fan. There’s nothing about it to hate for me. And all shows are temporary Susan, get that fact known.

I met in general that talk shows are not memorable..And are forgotten..Didn’t mean you personally…And I am not close-minded.. I know what I like & don’t like. And I don’t like talk shows on daytime programming…They are back to back of these talk
shows on daytime lately..Years ago there was a variety of game shows , talk , & soaps…As I was told by someone else on this site…Which I forgot & reminded me…I know shows are temporary but, Katie to me won’t last as long as 40 years or more this temporary is a long time. And I don’t live in a box for your information!!!!!
I hardly ever watch talk shows on daytime programming rather watch the soaps..Anyway Katie comes on the same time GH comes at 2:00p.m…With my cable provider Katie is on NBC…. So you know what I will be watching at 2:00p.m. and it won’t be Katie. You like watching katie & I don’t…The only talk show I watch occasionally is Jay Leno The Tonight Show at 11:34 p.m. Okay!!!

You don’t like the show because it replaced a soap opera. You’re blinded by your own hate. I’m sure you’ve probably never even watched the show to even judge it. Don’t start calling the kettle black until you can admit to yourself the own truth.

Also besides watching the soaps I like watching movies over a talk show in the afternoon after GH is over…Not many on this site by reading the comments don’t want to watch her show & rather watch their stories … She’s no Oprah! I am not the only one think there are too many talk shows on .. Read comment on 10/7 at 5:53 p.m, And read also comments on 10/6 at 10:37 a.m……………..

Um who said she had to be Oprah? What is with the comparisons these days? And I don’t need to read ANY comments. I’m reading those you’ve posted to me so please stop telling me to look elsewhere to try and avoid your own faults.

Read another comment on 10/6 at 7:35a.m.!!!!!

No.

Read comment on 10/5 at 11:38 p.m. Another person who would rather watch the
stories over talk shows..

No. IDGAF what other people are saying. YOU’RE the one who replied to me, so suck it up or move on Susan. It’s quite annoying and desperate.

You don’t even know me.. Annoying & despearate hmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!! What faults??????? I am spared from watching her talk show which is on NBC not ABC for me..I am a bit annoyed with these repacement shows & so are a lot of other people..No need to use fowl language…All I said is I know what I like to watch on daytime programming & what I don”t like to watch..Yes I dis reply to you.. What a mistake that was…You got really nasty & the use of bad language isn’t necessary.. Hate????? I have no interest what so ever to watch Katie!!!! So you enjoy watching her show and that’s it !!!!!! I support my stories!!!

Please don’t reply anymore that was the last of my comments regarding this issue…Have a nice day……….

Then stop replying to MY responses Susan, because if you cannot handle what’s being said to you, then you shouldn’t even begin the conversations and waste my important time with your extra and unneeded periods and your hate.

I thought this conversation was done!!! I don’t want to continue anymore conversations with you..Yes it is a waste of time… And I don’t hate no one! I can handle what is being said. You can’t agree on every thing…Goodbye & good luck & have a NICE DAY!

Correction we all can’t agree on everything…

It’s not done. You can’t make you stop responding Susan. So don’t get snippy with me, cause I can as well 10x harder!

I have tried to be nice about this and let this go.. All I said is I don’t agree with you on talk shows. You are making a federal case out of this…A person can’t disagree with you…………This is insane. Please stop with your hateful remarks..I don’t think I was being snippy at all..I am just repeating what I read
from your previous comments… Not everyone going to agree on everything. Whats the big deal in having a difference of opinion?? This a bit like road rqge now…Please stop !!! I will NEVER start a conversation of any kind with you again…Please let it go… This has gone too far….Please leave alone!!!

The bigger story is Jeff Zucker. He may have led TODAY to heights but he destroyed NBC’s primetime to such an extent it may never recover. I suppose CNN will find new depths under his leadership.

KATIE could never aspire to Oprah’s success in ratings, if only because the market is different now. Her show will need to find its sea legs, but I think the program now seems forced and rehearsed. Trying so hard not to offend. I miss daytime dramas. There is entriely too much talking on TV today. Who can be heard?

I agree what you said about Katie!!!!

I miss daytime dramas also….Talk shows on daytime programming are out of place….

Once upon a time daytime television was a mixture of game shows, talk shows and daytime dramas. There was a little bit of everything for everyone. It has only been recently networks have skewed this balance toward talk television. Like you I rather watch a good daytime drama over a talk show any day. I found some soaps more entertaining than some of the prime time stuff too. It seems the networks don’t have any idea who watches television during the day and how to attract them to their sets, if they did many of our beloved serials would still be on the air.

Katie is on the same time Gh is on at 2:00p.m. My cable provider has Katie on NBC….And I will NEVER watch it!! It sounds like Katie’s show is on it’s way out!!!! What
a waste of money & one hour airing time!!!!

I support the soaps !!! Not talk shows!!!!!!!!!!

Goodbye Katie!!!! You don’t belong on daytime programming!!!!!!

Katie is on in Sacramento Ca at 3pm on our local NBC Channel. If they replace Katie they most likely will replace her show with another talk show in an already flooded talk show genre.

Yes I agree we are flooded with talk show genre….In fl. she is on at 2:00p.m, on NBC…The same time GH comes on….GH is alway’s what I watch at that time….

They are choking us lately with all these daytime talk shows which are basically more of the same thing…BORING!!! I don’t like on especially daytime no info/talk/cooking shows….One talk show topic was my man is afraid to change diapers! That’s not entertainment..

More stories less talk shows!!!!

I don’t care what talk show it is I won”t watch them on daytime prog. Talk shows aren’t my thing. They never have been…Alway’s liked Drama & all the characters involved in these Drama’s…So much more interesting & keeps your attention.

it’s great that couric’s show’s struggling and that blanderson cooper was fired from daytime! who’s the idiot that greenlit his crappy show? like your average daytime talk show audience member could relate to a rich vanderbilt gay guy living in his liberal manhattan cocoon. couric should be fired and the view should reformat to 2 liberals and 2 conservatives w/ a moderate moderator to get a more balanced perspective. oh who am i kidding? all these talk shows are shills for the liberal perspective. the less of them the better.

There are a few people who actually like Katie’s talk show…I just can’t see what is to like about this talk show..I agree the less talk shows the better..

it’s great that blanderson wasn’t hired on live w/ kelly! it would have been yet a new platform for him to spread lies to the public that favor progressivism. he clearly cannot carry a show on his own and he’d only be riding on kelly’s coattails.

The show is very boring. She wants to be on broadway so why doesn’t she dance and sing on her show. The four martins dance.

Everyone seems to have a talk show these days.. Need more STORIES…. It isn’t a variety anyore like years ago.. Need a balance!

Thank You Gloria for your imput. What you said is true & thanks so much. For comment on 6/13 at 6:35 p.m….

When 2:00p.m. comes on I think OLTL! I have watched at that time for such a long time..It feels weird that GH is in it’s old timeslot..The good old days : 1:00p.m. (AMC), at
2:00p.m.(OLTL), & 3:00p.m.(GH)……….Oh well what are you going to do…I watch GH everyday & I only watched the soaps on ABC for years…So I never watched much if any
talk shows during those years when the Fab Three were on one after another. And I still don’t..Still enjoy my STORIES!!

I think they should put Katie’s show on in the morning..That would be a better time & place for her show…

Hey, SAD susan… u think Katie Couric is a phony ?!! ….and yet u LOVE ” soap operas?” -Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha,ha-ha-ha-ha !!! The jokes on YOU-UUUU

What is this all about?? I am just expressing my opinion.. To each its own.
My preference has alway’s been the soaps not talk info shows. I am very happy watching GH. Not sad in the least! I never said Katie was a phony??? I just like my stories over these kind of shows. LOL!

And I don’t want to this discuss this anymore. OK..

Yes, I think 3:00 am would be her best time slot.

Susan M rocks.
Katie Couric most certainly does not.

I was in traction so I could not change he channel. This program was so horrible I searched for an open window so I could jump out of it from the 23rd floor.

Christel Khalil Reveals She Almost Quit Acting After ‘That’s So Raven’ Audition, But Then Came ‘The Young and the Restless’

Published

The Young and the Restless fan favorite, Christel Khalil (Lily Winters) is the special guest on this week’s edition of Soapy Hosted by Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart which dropped today on Tuesday, June 23rd.

During the interview with Rebecca and Greg, Khalil who had played Lily Winters on-screen since August of 2002, nearly 24 years with the CBS soap, shared how early on her teenage acting career, she was ready to call it quits in show business, after a heartbreaking audition for the lead of a new Disney Channel sitcom, which later turned out to be the hit seres, That’s So Raven, starring Raven-Symoné which ran for four seasons from 2003-2007.

Christel recalled what happened. “I was 14 and I had always auditioned for all these Disney projects. So I auditioned for That’s So Raven, it was between me and Raven-Symoné and it was called at the time Absolutely Psychic,” explained Khalil. “The character was this girl who had psychic ability, but then when Raven got the role, they named the title of the show after her.”

HOW A BROTHERLY TALK CHANGED THE COURSE OF CHRISTEL’S CAREER

Reliving the disappointment to Greg and Rebecca, Christel explained, “I lost that part and I was just so devastated, because for the network call there were 20 people in the room watching me, and I just have always had such performance anxiety. I just completely bombed the audition and it was terrible. So, I was just devastated. I was actually going to quit acting and then I got the final call for The Young and The Restless and I wasn’t going to go.”

It was Khalil’s brother, who actually got her to reconsider, and if he hadn’t, we would not have our Lily Winters in Genoa City! Christel recounted, “I was like, ‘You know what? I’m done. I don’t want to do this anymore. I’m just going to hang out with my friends.’ I was just devastated. My brother, who is seven years older than me, and he had quit acting at the same age that I was at that time. He said to me, ‘I promise you, I actually really regret quitting. Just go on this audition and if you don’t get it, you can quit.'”

Christel’s screen-test for the role of Lily was actually with the late, great, Kristoff St. John who would play her father Neil (Later it was revealed to Lily, that Neil’s brother, Malcolm Winters was her bio-dad).

Photo: CBS

ACTING WAS EASY WITH THE LATE KRISTOFF ST. JOHN

“So, I went (to test for Lily) and I remember the screen-test was with Kristoff St. John. It was just so easy to act with him because he’s just so there. I remember just being on set, and that was my first time there for a screen-test where you were actually on set. I had never experienced that before. It was my first time being with an actor and  having makeup done, which just helps you really be able to do your best work.”

Recalling the screen-test with the St. John, Khalil, “It was where I had to be emotional ( in the scene) and I always had issues being emotional at auditions. But I was there with him, it just came, and it happened. It was natural and I felt so good and it was amazing. It stands out in my mind a lot.”

You can check out the full Soapy conversation with Christel Khalil where she also discusses juggling motherhood, marital life, and the demands of soap operas.

Fan can listen to weekly episodes of Soapy on Audacy or wherever podcasts are available, and can watch full video episodes weekly on the CBS =Brand YouTube Channel. Whether a lifelong fan or discovering the genre for the first time, SOAPY offers a fresh, fun behind-the-scenes look at the stories – and storytellers – that define daytime drama.

Now let us know, over the years what had been your favorite Lily Winters story on Y&R as played by Christel Khalil? What did you think of of Christell’s recollection where she was up for the lead of “That’s So Raven” as a teenager, before it was even titled that? Let us know via the comment section.

If you have ever tuned-in to the soap opera genre over the last 50 years, and witnessed some of the greatest romances, drama, classic and outlandish storylines of all-time, you would have seen Deidre Hall smack dab in the middle of it as longtime Salem heroine, Dr. Marlena Evans.

It was 50 years on this date, June 21, 1976 that Hall first appeared on DAYS on NBC which was its home for 57 years before it moved to its current streaming platform on Peacock in September of 2022.

In Hall’s first episode she was introduced as a psychiatrist treating Mickey Horton (John Clarke) at Bayview Sanitarium after he suffered a complete mental breakdown. Mickey learned that his brother Bill Horton (Edward Mallory) was the biological son of Mike Horton (Wesley Eure) with his wife Laura (Susan Flannery) and that he had been lied to for years and years. From that moment on, the rest is television and soap opera history. Days of Our Lives put Hall front and center.

There were so many heartbreaking and shocking story twists involving the beloved Marlena. One of the first was the historic crib death of baby DJ (Don Jr.) in 1980, Marlena’s infant son with Don Craig (Jed Allan). The story had never been told on daytime television and Hall’s performances received accolades from TV critics to fans when Deidre received thousands of letters from grieving mothers who had gone through the same thing in their own lives.

DAYS also brought Deidre’s twin sister, Andrea Hall Lovell to the show as her on-screen sister Samantha, who had a grudge and even locked Marlena up in a sanitarium and took her place! Fast-forward and in 1982, DAYS launched the Salem Strangler story where everyone believed Marlena was his next victim, only it turned out to be Samatha. Jake Kositchek (played by Jack Coleman) was revealed to be the actual serial killer.

Later, Deidre would assume the role of Marlena’s look-alike, Hattie Adams in 2004, once played by her sister, Andrea. Over the years, Hattie has come back to Salem and caused trouble giving Hall a chance to play a different type of character, then the always upstanding Marlena.

THE LOVES OF MARLENA

Deidre Hall struck gold with all her leading men: from the late Jed Allan, to Wayne Northrop as Roman Brady, and of course, her enduring love story with the late John Black played by the iconic Drake Hogestyn. In fact, Marlena’s 1986 wedding to John (who was believed to be Roman at the time) remains a favorite of fans to this day.

TOP MARLENA STORYLINES OF ALL-TIME

While the list is long, here are several that were some of the memorable during Deidre’s five decades in Salem!

The Possession (1994- 1995)
Considered one of the most ambiguous, outlandish and unforgettable story arcs in soap opera history, then Days of Our Lives head writer, James Reilly went there! Marlena was possessed by the devil! That included; the demonic eyes, hissing at father John (Black) the priest, morphing into creatures, and the classic levitating in her bed! It became a cultural phenomenon and cemented Deidre Hall’s status as a daytime television legend. Just ask Ryan Gosling!

The Affair with John Black (1993)
John and Marlena’s forbidden love could not be denied and they had passionate affair, while she was still married to the real Roman. Problem was her daughter, Sami (Alison Sweeney) caught her mother having sex with John on a desk that changed Sami forever.

The Salem Stalker Mystery (2003-2004)
In a shocker, Marlena was revealed to be a serial killer who bumped off several Salem favorites residents who were all alive on the island of Melaswen (spelled “New Salem” backward). Turns out, she was manipulated and gaslighted by Andre DiMera (Thaao Penghlis) to do the “killings” and had no memory of her actions.

The Pier Scene (1991)
This remains Michael Fairman TV’s all-time favorite Deidre Hall moment, which featured some of the best acting in the storied careers of both Hall and Drake Hogestyn.

In the story, a presumed-dead Marlena returns after four years. One foggy night on the pier, John is alone, and Marlena steps out of the fog to reveal herself, and is reunited with the love of her life. You can watch it any year, any decade, and in any moment, and it will have you reaching for the hankies again and again. (best music score fo a soap scene of all-time too!)

Kristen’s Secret Room Reveal (1997)
Marlena was caught in Kristen Blake’s (Eileen Davidson) elaborate web of lies, when she was held hostage in a secret wine cellar/room until John managed to track her down, leading to an iconic on-screen reunion. The classic catfight between Hall and Eileen Davidson was one for the ages.

It should be noted that Maison Blanche, Queen of the Night, Possession, Aremid and Lady in a Cage were all a part of classic DAYS storyline and all featured Hall at the epicenter of it from 1993-1996.

THE RECENT YEARS OF MARLENA

In recent years, DAYS brought back the possession 2.0 storyline under then head writer Ron Carlivati in 2021 where the devil leapt back in Marlena after taking advantage of a frail Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes)

In 2025, viewers watched the end of the love story of John and Marlena, as John succumbed to injuries sustained in an explosion saving a vial of medication needed to bring Bo (Peter Reckell) back to life. Marlena has been a widow on-screen since June of 2025 as Hall as portrayed the good doctor struggling with her grief and to move on with her life since his death.

One story that never goes away is Stefano DiMera’s (the late Joe Mascolo) obsession with Marlena, his “Queen of the Night.” Even in death, Stefano is toying with her from the great beyond with the mysterious chess set and the missing “pawn,” that he had gifted John and Marlena in his will. The mystery is currently unfolding on all-new episodes of Days of Our Lives.

Tune-in to Days of our Lives on the Monday, June 22 episode as Marlena looks back at her 50 years in Salem.
