In a year that brought the heartbreaking loss of beloved talents in front of the camera, shocking exits and more, it was an emotional rollercoaster for soap opera viewers. Now, as 2025 begins, Michael Fairman TV takes a look back at the previous year with our annual list of the Best and Worst in Soaps.

As it does every year, we want take this opportunity to pay tribute to the hard work and tremendous talent of actors, writers, producers, creatives, and crews whose tireless efforts in of itself, is a feat, given the demands to churn out episodes and performances in breakneck speed.

However, in addition to naming the best moments and performances of 2024, there were several not-so-stellar moments featuring characters, storylines, and more, that get the dubious honor of some of our “Worsts”.

While we know many of you have your own views and picks, and you may disagree with ours, we encourage you to let us know your thoughts as well. Most of all, respect everyone’s opinions, as you wish them to respect yours.

Finally, we want to wish our enduring community here at Michael Fairman TV, a very Happy New Year. It is all of you with your passion for the genre itself, which makes this such a unique form of entertainment with a special connection between the audience, the performers, and the storylines themselves.

So, here we go … the Best and Worst in Soaps 2024. Take a look below.

BEST SOAP

General Hospital

Every show had its issues in 2024. B&B had two great shockers with Sugar/Sheila and Luna gone wild, but then also came the very repetitive stories, Brooke/Ridge/Taylor etc. Y&R had the most riveting drama of the year with Sharon and the death of Heather Stevens, while at other times was marred down by business storylines. DAYS brought its entertainment value and showed its heart many times throughout the year, but at other times was incredibly hard to watch episode to episode.

So, in an imperfect year for all the soaps, for us, the one we were able to get through the most was General Hospital. It brought us so many emotional moments big and small with Bobbie, Sam and Dex’s death, the angst of Kristina and Molly over the loss of the baby, Lulu coming back to life, the Quartermaines front and center (and loving Jane Elliot), and Steve Burton back as Jason who in the smallest of moments showed that this version of Jason is less stoic and is more likely to shed a tear. Don’t get us wrong. The show had its problems with its bloated cast, unfinished stories that seem dropped out of nowhere, and fan favorites being let-go, but in the end, it’s GH that gave us the most overall ability to tune-in.

BEST OVERALL PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS

Sharon Case – Sharon Collins – The Young and the Restless

Hands-down, the remarkable performance of the year occurred in the episode where it appears that Sharon Collins caused the death of Heather Stevens after a catastrophic showdown between the two and its aftermath. That aftermath included: Sharon disposing Heather’s body over a bridge, wailing and wailing for what she had done in a mind-bending stupor in her car. Couple and triple that with episode after episode of Sharon’s guilt, the cover-up, talking to her alter-ego (the late Cameron Kirsten), her admission of guilt to Nick, and it was all a marathon masterclass where Case had to bring that kind of emotional instability, vulnerability, criminal culpability and the tears for months on end. If Sharon Case does not receive a Emmy nod for this body of work, then we may have some serious issues.

Honorable Mention:

Nancy Lee Grahn – Alexis Davis – General Hospital

This was definitely Nancy’s year on General Hospital. From the loss of Gregory Chase to the loss of her beloved daughter, Sam McCall, and a heartbreaking look at a mother’s grief, Nancy played it all with great depth. In story, Alexis also tries to hold up her two other bickering daughters (Molly and Kristina) among their battle over the loss of the baby that Kristina was carrying, Nancy showed why she is a powerhouse every day of the season. PLUS, how we loved the Christmas episode where Alexis enlisted Ric to help her decorate the tree to cheer up their daughter, Molly, which was comedic genius from both actors.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A STORYLINE

Melody Thomas Scott – Nikki’s drinking hits rock bottom – The Young and the Restless

Who doesn’t love a boozin’ Nikki? Jordan did such a number on her that earlier in the year she hit rock bottom only to sober up following Jack’s risky intervention in a stunning two-person episode. How long will Miss Bougie stay off the bottle this time, now that Jordan is back? We have said it before, and will say it again, nobody plays drunk on TV like MTS. But it’s always the comeback and how Nikki pulls herself back together that we always root for.

BEST SINGLE PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A STORYLINE

Kate Mansi – Kristina in the pouring rain visits “Adela’s” grave – General Hospital

In complete anguish, Kristina visits the gravesite of the baby she lost when she crashed through the window at the Metro Court during an argument with Ava. Grieving, she goes to the grave in the pouring rain and is torn up inside over the baby’s death and lays herself across the grave missing her daughter. It’s the kind of Emmy scene voters love.

BEST OVERALL PERFORMANCE BY A SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Susan Seaforth Hayes – Julie Williams – Days of our Lives

How Susan Seaforth Hayes was able to play the same grief and loss she was experiencing in real-life provided the most astounding and gut-wrenching moments in soaps in 2024. After the loss of her beloved husband, Bill Hayes back in January, viewers witnessed: Julie learning that Doug had died on Thanksgiving, her heartbreaking final moments before they took Doug’s body, the memorial service where Susan used the same eulogy with some tweaks she delivered at Bill’s real-life memorial. Then, on Christmas Day, for the first time in 50 years, Doug is not present for the annual Horton Christmas tree ornament hanging and Julie presides over it by herself.  This was an important story to tell for people who have been in long-term relationships and survive the loss of their loved one. We should all put our arms around Susan and thank her for letting us in through Julie.

Photo: JPI

BEST OVERALL PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR

Paul Telfer – Xander Kiriakis – Days of our Lives

This year, Xander was put through an emotional journey as he learned he was duped by his own mother, Fiona and was Victor Kiriakis biological son. Telfer’s explosion after the fallout from the double wedding where he learned the truth about Xander’s parentage was impressive. Later, when his wife, Sarah is run down by a car and he thinks its Brady who’s done the deed, he wants to “Tonya Harding” him with a baseball bat, and still later in the story, Xander says his goodbyes to Fiona, who winds up having to pay for her web of lies, including driving drunk, and leaving the scene of a hit and run resulting in Sarah landing in a wheelchair. In addition, Xander’s fight scenes with his half-brother, Philip is always fun to watch. Telfer can bring the drama, the comedy, the villainy, and yes, at times, the over-the-top essence of Xander (Kilt at all).

Photo: JPI

Honorable Mention:

Steve Burton – Jason Morgan – General Hospital

Burton’s re-entry story as Jason working for Pikeman/FBI Cates and the blackmail that ensued was a bust. While to some this may be a controversial choice, later in the year GH brought more of an emotional Jason, who was interacting with his children, who would give solid advice to those in need, and was dependable as they come. We felt for Jason’s heartfelt goodbye to his longtime love, Sam, the moments as he tried to comfort his son, Danny, and even being dissed by his now MIA son, Jake. Recently, Jason moved into the Quartermaines and we’ve enjoyed his scenes with Tracy, and doing what all of us wanted to do, punch the lights out of his brother, Drew!

BEST OVERALL PERFORMANCE BY A SUPPORTING ACTOR

Dan Feuerriegel – EJ DiMera – Days of our Lives

Dan is always good, and he continued bringing all sides of EJ DiMera throughout 2024, but he really showcased his acting chops in the moment EJ fessed up to Nicole about pretending to be Jude’s father to keep her, and instead of showing massive histrionics, he showed a restraint and sadness of a man caught up in web of lies to try to keep the woman he loves. When she leaves the baby and him for good, of course, he explodes!

Photo: JPI

BEST SINGLE PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A STORYLINE

Peter Bergman – Jack’s intervention of Nikki’s bender – The Young and the Restless

If Peter Bergman chooses to use the scenes from this episode, he could easily walk away with his fourth Daytime Emmy. In what was a remarkable two-person episode with Bergman and Melody Thomas Scott, Jack comes to a room at the GCAC to try to get Nikki to stop drinking. She is on full stupor-mode and will not stop no matter how hard Jack tries to get through to her. So, in desperation, Jack turns the tables on her. He starts drinking with her and orders some pills from his old dealer and precedes to get high and drunk, but in the process winds up almost dead in his efforts to shock Nikki out of her stupor. Remarkable work from one of the all-time greats!

Courtesy/ABC

BEST OVERALL PERFORMANCE IN A STORYLINE

Michael Easton – Gregory’s Death and its aftermath – General Hospital

This was a case of when a soap opera decides to write-off a character or an actor, that they give them meaty material at the end of their run, hence the case with the exit of Michael Easton. The heartbreak began when his dying father, Gregory (who has ALS) and Finn have a ‘come to Jesus’ moment and put their past animosity aside and reveal that they love each other. Gregory also tells Finn how proud of him he is and vice-versa. The next morning, Finn finds his dad passed away in his bed, and that propels the real downward spiral of Finn’s drinking problem which eventually lands him off the canvas and in rehab. If we had to lose Easton, he went out with heavy duty memorable scenes.

BEST ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE

Cast of General Hospital – Bobbie’s Memorial and its aftermath

General Hospital gave the perfect send-off to the beloved Jackie Zeman, and her legendary character of nurse Bobbie Spencer. In a fully-developed story, not only did we get the heartbreaking memorial service, but the second leg of it where we learned that Bobbie was working to save women who had a fallen into a life of prostitution, just like she had in her younger years while in Europe. We learn all this through Angela, the reporter, who shows up in Port Charles, who turns out to be Bobbie’s daughter, (the angel) BJ, played by the returning Brighton Hertford. Who will ever forget the moment she calls Lucas (then played by Ryan Carnes), “champ” and he takes a moment to realize that BJ must be with him in spirit. Hankies!

Cast of Days of our Lives – Doug’s Death and memorial

From Susan Seaforth Hayes to Kristian Alfonso to Matthew Ashford and Melissa Reeves, to Suzanne Rogers and everyone in between. DAYS gave an extraordinary proper send-off to Doug Williams while honoring the legendary Bill Hayes. With Julie at the absolute emotional epicenter, family members, and all of Salem learned of Doug’s passing and then came together for a tearjerker of a memorial service all tied in a bow for Days of our Lives 15,000th episode milestone.

Courtesy/ABC

BEST TEARJERKER

Sam’s Death – General Hospital

It is hard to beat the tour de force performances of Dominic Zamprogna, Steve Burton, and Nancy Lee Grahn, as each came to Sam’s hospital bedside and said their goodbyes to her after her sudden heart attack following her liver donor transplant surgery. Burton was incredibly moving as Jason says farewell to his ex and the mother of their son, Danny. As the grieving fiancé, Zamprogna’s Dante broke our hearts, and when Alexis climbs into bed to be with her daughter, Nancy Lee Grahn took the whole thing to another level. We not only brought out the hankies for the story, but that we had to endure the loss of 21-year vet, Kelly Monaco who was written off the show.

Photo: JPI

BEST VILLAIN

Lisa Yamada – Luna Nozawa – The Bold and the Beautiful

In the year’s most shocking twist, B&B turned nice girl Luna Nozawa into a murderous and cagey criminal. Luna killed both Tom Starr (Clint Howard) and Hollis for fear they would reveal that the Tom was her biological father. Later, she went from being Bill’s “possible” bio-daughter to trying to make out with him! And still later, she outsmarted Steffy and locked her in a cage. One of the best performances of the year and smartest moves by the CBS soap.

WORST VILLAIN

John Kapelos – Konstantin Meleounis – Days of our Lives

In story, Konstantin went after Victor Kiriakis’ grieving widow Maggie, turned John back into the “Pawn,” and just landed like a moustache-twirling villain plopped into Salem nobody wanted to see. When Konstantin’s reign of terror ended and John Kapelos was killed-off we were dancing on …the character’s grave.

Photo: ABC

BEST YOUNGER ACTOR

Finn Carr – Rocco Falconeri – General Hospital

Finn Carr gave us all the feels and the emotions as a son hoping and praying his mother, Lulu, would wake up after a four-year coma, juxtaposed with being wracked with guilt that his other “mom” Sam lost her life in the middle of it. The scenes with Genie Francis as Laura in the hospital chapel, illustrated Carr’s depth as an actor, plus who didn’t love the moment when Rocco saw a very much alive Lulu at the Q’s for the first time.

Courtesy/ABC

BEST RETURN

John J. York – Mac Scorpio – General Hospital

When John J. York finally returned to GH after his battle and treatment from two blood cancers, he stepped right back into the drama. Mac learned Cody is his biological son and that he lied about it, which sent good-natured Mac reeling. As the story beats were played out, it was York’s lovable Mac that we never want to see hurt. John played this father/son drama and its resolution to perfection, Welcome back Mac!

WORST RETURN

Jonathan Jackson – Lucky Spencer – General Hospital

We have always said, and stand by, that one of the all-time greats is five-time Daytime Emmy winner, Jonathan Jackson. How excited were we and longtime GH fans, when we learned Jackson would be returning to the show on contract. However, the writers could not have set up his return worse. Jackson’s Lucky was put into the Sidwell/diamond saga and trapped in Africa, which seemed interminable. He then finally made it back to Port Charles where he learned he could not be a donor match for Lulu. Then, he spent weeks lamenting whether he should just go back to Africa, and it all came off as wishy-washy, deadbeat dad syndrome. Finally, it looks as if GH is putting Elizabeth and Lucky back together, and let’s hope there is a major story utilizing Jackson’s incredible emotional capabilities as an actor in 2025.

SAD GOODBYE

Violet says goodbye to Chase, Brook Lynn and Tracy – General Hospital

Jophielle Love as Violet cried her eyes out before she left Port Charles to join her dad, Finn in Seattle post-rehab. She actually is the biggest winner of the year, because she got to take with her some of Lila Quartermaine’s real china! But how great was Jophielle Love when Violet says her goodbyes to Brook Lynn, Chase and Tracy Q? Hankies!

Photo: ABC

BEST RECAST FEMALE

Alexa Havins – Lulu Spencer – General Hospital

While so many were ready to criticize GH for their choice for not bringing back Julie Berman (they did try, but she did not want to come back) or going in a different direction than bringing Emme Rylan back, the choice of Alexa Havins is a pretty inspiring one, and she fits the role like a glove. In short order, the former All My Children actress, who stepped away mostly from acting to be a stay-at-home mom, has returned to daytime without missing a beat.

Photo: JPI

BEST RECAST MALE

Leo Howard – Tate Black- Days of our Lives

Admittedly, Leo is much older in real life than the late teen angst he portrays with the young women in Tate Black’s life, but Howard brings a fresh perspective and more dynamic version of the son of Brady Black and Theresa Donovan.

MOST SHOCKING RECAST

Rebecca Budig – Taylor Hayes – The Bold and the Beautiful

When the All My Children and General Hospital favorite came to The Bold and the Beautiful as Taylor Hayes, viewers at first where a bit perplexed; especially because didn’t look old enough to be the mother to Jacqueline MacInnes Wood’s Steffy Forrester. However, Budig, as she always has done, is doing her best with the material given to her as she works to establish the on-screen relationships with Taylor’s romantic and familial ties and past.

Photo: JPI

WORST EXIT

Trevor St. John – Tucker McCall – The Young and the Restless

Another one of the best actors to ever grace the daytime screen is Trevor St. John. From his days as Todd/Victor Lord Jr. on One Life to Live till now, Trevor is as dynamic as they come. When he came to Y&R as the recast Tucker McCall, we had such high hopes for the character, but somehow they wrote him into this convoluted relationship with Ashley, and then all of a sudden, he left the canvas. Does anyone remember where Tucker supposedly went? For whatever reason, Trevor left Y&R, and the show could have given him a better exit story.

Photo: JPI

BEST COUPLE

Finn and Steffy – The Bold and the Beautiful

Who doesn’t love the man of your dreams rescuing you from a deranged young woman who locked you up in a cage! Team Sinn!

Photo: ABC

WORST COUPLE IN THE MAKING

Willow and Drew – General Hospital

Let’s not forget, Drew was having sex all over the office with Willow’s mother, Nina before hitting the floor with her daughter. Then, putting a wrecking ball through Willow’s marriage to Michael. Maybe the two truly, truly deserve each other? From the looks of it, we are going to get ‘Drillow’ in 2025, especially with the looming exit of Chad Duell’s Michael.

Photo: JPI

MOST MISSED CHARACTER

Thomas Forrester – The Bold and the Beautiful

After all of Hope’s “headaches” when she thought about Finn, her ogling over him, then her sudden relationship with Carter, it makes us miss Thomas, a man who had a Hope mannequin stowed away in his apartment, and kept her child from her. But I guess, we can forgive all that. Bring Thomas back STAT!

Photo: JPI

BEST FIRST IMPRESSION

Crew Morrow – Will Spencer – The Bold and the Beautiful

Soap newbie, Crew Morrow (son of Y&R’s Joshua Morrow) eased in to the role of the SORAS’d Will Spencer reminding us of his dad when he was starting Y&R as Nick Newman. Crew’s essence in front of the camera made a very strong first impression on any naysayer viewers.

MOST SHOCKING KISS

Anna and Jason – General Hospital

GH seemed to be building to this for months – that Anna and Jason seemed to be getting closer – and there’s nothing like being held prisoner – thinking you’re going to die – than bringing two people together for one last kiss, only to survive, and then have awkward moments for months while agreeing to never speak of it again.

WORST AVALANCHE OF NEWCOMERS

Days of our Lives

Talia, Javi, Felicity, Mark, Aaron, Joy, Doug III and more- it’s hard to get invested in such a litany of newbies to Salem, having nothing to do their portrayers and the actors capabilities.

CHARACTER WHO DESERVED THE BIGGEST BITCH-SLAP (TIE)

Steffy Forrester – The Bold and the Beautiful

How long can one listen to this sanctimonious Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) throwing her weight around as the boss at Forrester Creations and repeating the same dialog about Hope Logan? She also seemed to want to believe the worst from her husband, Finn, who opened up to her about Hope kissing him. We say, everyone should line-up and give her a bitch-slap.

Sloan Petersen – Days of our Lives

Two-years running, Sloan (Jessica Serfaty) deserves a slap and she certainly got one from Nicole earlier in 2024 when her full duplicity came to light of passing Nicole and Eric’s baby off as EJ’s and more.

Courtesy/ABC

BEST STANDALONE EPISODE (Tie)

Bobbie’s Memorial Service – General Hospital

The hankies were needed as the cast including; Kin Shriner (Jackie Zeman’s dear friend) broke our hearts eulogy after eulogy. While there were some key people missing at the service, the moment when the casket was brought in, to Lucas coming home for his mother’s service, to Angela the reporter showing up (with the reveal she is BJ on the follow-up episode), made it gut-wrenching to say goodbye to nurse Bobbie, and we felt that Jackie Zeman was looking down at her former cast members and friends, and proud of what they accomplished in her honor.

Doug’s Memorial Service – Days of our Lives

The use of clips alone broke our hearts, as the characters flashed back into the life Doug Williams, plus we had Liz Chandler leading everyone in “I’ll Be Loving You, Always,” Julie’s eulogy, and all the beautiful touches by the DAYS writing team to salute the incredible legacy of Bill Hayes. The only thing we could have gone without was the childish bickering of Marie Horton and Liz during the episode.

Photo: JPI

BEST STANDALONE EPISODE PERFORMANCE

Michelle Stafford – Phyllis reflects on her life – The Young and the Restless

Y&R gave us three wonderful standalone episodes this year, featuring Sharon Case Joshua Morrow and Michelle Stafford, all of whom were celebrating major milestones of 30 years with the top-rated soap. However, scene to scene, moment to moment the most affecting was Stafford’s, who showed us the ups and downs, the regrets and the revenge plots of why we love to love or love to hate, Phyllis. By the conclusion of the episode, you found yourself in tears as this mamma bear will do anything to protect her children, even if it’s through questionable means.

Photo: ABC

BEST FATHER/SON MOMENT

Aiden tells Lucky he’s gay – General Hospital

Colin Cassidy really delivered in this poignant scene where Lucky learns from Aiden that he is gay. Lucky took the information and instead of shunning his son, accepted him with love and compassion. This was a simple and effective coming out scene, and one of the best we have seen between a child and a parent on the soaps. Brilliantly played by both actors. Applause!

BEST STORYLINE

Sharon thinks she ‘killed’ Heather Stevens and tries to cover it up – The Young and the Restless

This had been the big umbrella story of the year, and has been riveting with all of its twists and turns. It all is tied back to the death of Sharon’s daughter, Cassie back in 2005 and her vendetta to even the score with Daniel Romalotti and his family. We learn Sharon’s med are all screwed up and she is getting directions from the ghost of Cameron Kirsten to kill Daniel, but that goes south and she ends up in a showdown with Heather which leads to dire consequences. Here we are months later and this story has even more legs! It’s one of the best layered mysteries involving many characters and of course, Ian and Jordan, and we are just getting started there.

Photo: JPI

MOST BORING STORYLINE

Corporate takeovers and intrigue – The Young and the Restless

Does anyone know who works for Hamilton/Winters, Glissade, Chancellor, Newman Enterprises, Marchetti, or whatever the amalgamation of these companies are anymore? Do the Y&R writers think we care who is working where and with whom over …. and over and over again? Daytime shouldn’t be about business talk ad nauseum. You even need a scorecard to keep track of where each employee went and who is siding with who! Confusion reigns.

MOST WRECKED CHARACTER

Hope Logan – The Bold and the Beautiful

As we start 2025, even Ridge Forrester is calling Hope a “bitch” and a “slut,” after entering into a relationship with Carter, following her attraction to Finn, following being unable to commit to Thomas who left town with Paris and Douglas to move to wait for it, Paris! Can we restore some dignity to this character? Annika Noelle can play anything given to her and is one of the series biggest assets. How about giving Hope a story other than about her lusting after a man? Maybe she should lose it, and just put Steffy back in a cage!

MOST POMPOUS CHARACTER

Drew Quartermaine – General Hospital

Need we say more? In short order Drew Quartermaine became the most arrogant, backstabbing, wife-stealer in soap history. Not only did GH make Drew a savvy politician, but he had sex with his nephew’s wife, and took away his ‘best friend’ Curtis’ position at CEO of Aurora, all in underhanded maneuvers. However, payback is a bitch!

BEST USE OF HISTORY

Sugar – The Bold and the Beautiful

We all knew that Sheila Carter wasn’t dead, and lo and behold they delved into Sheila’s past and the plastic surgery makeover in South America of her former cellmate, Sugar.  Looks like Sugar was making some moves that Sheila was aware of and when Steffy plunged a knife into her mother-in-law, it was actually Sugar who bit the dust.

Photo: JPI

OVERUSED PLOT DEVICE

DID or Multiple Personalities

Bobby Stein/Everett Lynch – Days of our Lives

We were so excited to see Blake Berris back on DAYS, and even better that he got to show how well he plays a bad guy, but the Everett/Bobby story ended with no payoff. He became another ultimate victim of Li Shin-deranged killer, Connie Vinski.

Ashley’s alters – The Young and the Restless

It’s always great to see two-time Daytime Emmy winner, Eileen Davidson given material to sink her teeth into. However, Y&R gave us a confusing story as to what caused Ashley to split into her alters. We thought it was Tucker gaslighting her, but it turned out to be her therapist Alan’s twin brother Martin who did the damage??

Photo: JPI

WORST STORYLINE (TIE)

Body and Soul – Days of our Lives

What started out as a very clever ‘soap within a soap’ idea when Nurse Whitley kidnapped Abe Carver and made him watch endless hours of “Body and Soul” in 2023, became a reality, when in 2024 ‘Body and Soul” got its own storyline complete with the residents of Salem becoming the performers in the soap opera (none of them having acting experience before, of course) and the story overtook a large portion of episode time on Days of our Lives, itself.

Broken Heart Syndrome – The Bold and the Beautiful

When Taylor Hayes returned to B&B in the form of Rebecca Budig, it appeared she had a fatal heart condition that she learned of while in Europe. HOWEVER, after getting a second opinion in the U.S. from Dr. Grace Buckingham, we learn that Taylor is going to live and she is actually suffering from “Broken Heart Syndrome” – a condition that causes a weakening of the heart muscle made worse, by emotional stressors like grief, fear, anger, or surprise – seems Taylor was pining for Ridge too much, and hadn’t dealt with the grief of losing her daughter, Phoebe years ago. The worst part was when she straddled Ridge during the guru session to help her come to terms with the loss of their daughter, only for Brooke to see them in that position.

Photo: JPI

MOST CONVOLUTED PLOT

Who is Abigail? – Days of our Lives

This storyline seemed to suffer from different writers take on where this was going – from the writers’ strike regime to the original writing team being put back in place. Somehow in the middle of it, we were left not believing that the woman claiming she was Chad’s late wife, Abigail was nothing but an imposter. The payoff of this story that “Abigail” is Cat Greene didn’t have the punch either, because no one cared for the Greene family, previously. The final nail in the coffin was Clyde about to reveal to Chad where the real Abigail supposedly is, only to get shot by Catharina and land in a coma for the unforeseeable future.

Honorable mention:

Pikeman Arms Dealers – General Hospital

So, Jack (formerly John) Brennan ran this? Valentin ran this? Jason was blackmailed by FBI agent John “Jagger? Cates or Carly would face RICO charges, and on and on and on and on. Confusing, right?

Courtesy/ABC

MURDER EVERYONE FORGOT ABOUT

Sonny kills Cates – General Hospital

Did we watch another soap? Didn’t Sonny Corinthos shoot in cold-blood FBI agent John Cates? Now, whether Cates deserved it or not, is not the question. The question is, are we going to revisit that Sonny murdered a man showing his true mobster mentality and ways, or is Sonny going to get away with this and not pay for his crime someday? A head-scratcher.

BIGGEST HEADLINES

‘Beyond the Gates’ to become first new daytime drama in 25 years

‘Beyond the Gates’ began production in November and is set to become daytime’s newest soap opera in 25 years. With notable soap scribes and EP’s doing the creative, led by Michele Val Jean, and supported by Bob Guza Jr., Julie Hanan Carruthers, Ron Carlivati and more, anticipation is high to meet the wealthy Dupree family and all their friends and enemies, starting on February 24, 2025 on CBS.

A tragic death and the loss of beloved Favorites

2024 was just an incredibly sad year due to the passings of so many beloved favorites. Days of our Lives was hit the hardest with the devastating losses of Bill Hayes, Drake Hogestyn, and Wayne Northrup. The Young and the Restless felt the loss of Marla Adams and Meg Bennett, while the General Hospital family mourned the passings of Ron Hale, Robyn Bernard, Doug Sheehan and Richard Simmons. Add to that, Another World’s John Aprea, AMC’s Esta Terblanche, Ryan’s Hope, Helen Gallagher, OLTL’s Thom Christopher, Port Charles stars Nicholas Pryor and David Gail, and more.

Photo: AP

However, it was the murder of GH alum Johnny Wactor (ex-Brando Corbin) that was the most heartbreaking story of 2024. The 37-year-old was shot and killed in downtown LA after his bartending job in the wee hours of the morning, when he came upon three men attempting to steal the catalytic converter of his vehicle. For months, the police tried to find the suspects until finally they were apprehended. #JusticeforJohnny became one of the most used hashtags on soap social media in 2024.

Honorable mention:

Arianne Zucker sues Days of our Lives

Arianne Zucker made the stunning move to sue Days of our Lives’ Corday Productions, its executive producer, Ken Corday, and former executive producer, Albert Alarr. Zucker sued for sexual harassment, discrimination, retaliation, negligent hiring and supervision, and wrongful termination among other claims stemming from the 2023 ouster of Alarr as the series co-executive producer.

BEST OVERUSED PROPS OR TERMS

Magic Mints – The Bold and the Beautiful

Poppy’s mints caused so much trouble, especially when in the original story, Luna took the mints with some booze and thought she was having sex with R.J. only it was Zende in a hallucinogenic mind-bender. As time moved on, we found out Luna’s story was bogus.  But those mints!

Bad Hip Replacement – General Hospital

Who knew hips could cause cobalt poisoning and turn you into a serial killer! When GH needed to free Heather Webber (Alley Mills) from prison, they came up with a bad hip replacement as the cause of all her actions. Really?

RICO Violations – General Hospital

Take your pick! Aren’t Carly, Sonny and Jason, all at one time or another, involved in RICO violations?

Ten Toes – The Bold and the Beautiful

Super sleuth, Deacon Sharpe (Sean Kanan) figures out that his beloved Sheila (Kimberlin Brown) is really alive somewhere when he visits the morgue, and as her body is about to be turned to ash, he sees that the person lying there about to be fried has ten toes, when Sheila only has nine toes. For weeks, we heard “ten toes,” “ten toes!”

I would have gone with Gabi as best recast on Days! Loving Lulu, but Gabi is amazing and immediately became my favorite on the show when she took over. GH deserves best soap though!

I was worried if we’d be getting this list or not. And, per the usual, there is lots we disagree with, Mr. Fairman, but it’s always nice to see a tenured personality, such as yourself, recap our year!!

Judah Mackey (Connor, Y&R) should’ve also gotten Best Younger Actor

Agree, also the whole bunch of kids on GH are doing a wonderful job and so good-looking, etc, etc.Cant say enough a out these young stars!

Best couple – SINN! Certainly!!
Incredible choice.

Worst storyline is anything having to do with Chelsea,Adam and Connor. The OCD part was boring & not even about Connor. Then come one of the worst ONS in soap history. Between Chelsea’s weird OTT panic attacks and Adam’s gas lighting the aftermath was annoying. Courtney & Jason’s reactions were good but that’s all. Then Connor is suddenly cured, acts like he’s 5 years old, they turned Adam Newman into Ward Cleaver talking about buttons & scarves. To top it all off those two have zero chemistry.

He had chemistry with Case and Ch but they had to date in real life then when they break up it becomes awkward. Yes the true Adam take was by MM but we all know how that turned out. Oh well more drama off camera.

Bold DOES NOT need Thomas back. Hopefully we never see him again

I agree, but will miss R.J, cute kid with lots of potential.

I would select Nancy Lee Grahn as best overall performance by an actress, but can’tcompareher to anyone else since I only watch GH. I do agree on Best Soap: General Hospital and Best Young performance in Finn Carr. He had me in tears in his scenes with Genie Frances.

NLG for the win at the Emmy Awards!

Michael, this is an excellent recap. Currently, I only watch GH and DOOL, but can appreciate all of the other soaps. I think this year’s Emmy will see Sharon Case and Nancy Lee Grahn battling for Best Actress, Susan Seaforth Hayes walking away with Best Supporting Actress.

I hope Michael Easton (Finn, GH) submits the scenes for Best Actor. Finn finding his Dad had passed away and then his descent into alcohol were raw to say the least. His scenes with Violet, Tracy and Elizabeth were amazing before he entered rehab.

I miss the Younger Actress category because so many on GH would be shoo-ins for a nomination. Violet, Rocco and Danny all had an award-winning year. I can only hope Violet comes back to visit Tracy, BLQ and Chase.

It is hard for me to me to put Sonny on a good list after watching his murder Cates in cold blood. Come on writers, make it a part of Cyrus’s farewell and give us closure. Same with Austin. Who bought Windermere? Who sent Ava all of the letters?

This is the year we all have come to realize that Jane Elliot is an acting treasure. One look from Tracy makes you want to run as fast as possible. But her scenes with Gregory, Finn and Cody keeps me captivated.

In 2025, I am hoping to see a LOT more Maura West as Ava, the return of Nicholas, Finn/Violet and more LOVE in the afternoon. We need a couple to cheer for. My bets are on Ava/Rick, Lulu/Cody and hopefully a new love for Lady Tracy!

I think most of us have known that Jane Elliot is an “acting treasure.” I am so happy that she grew bored of retirement and came back. Now let them give her a man who doesn’t die on her!

Re: Bold. Ridge using “slut” and “bitch” as a reference to how Hope has been wrecked and not how Ridge has been wrecked is a problem to me. First, Ridge is the last one to talk about that with both his and his daughter’s long-term and short-term history, and, second, that language is never okay. Also, Hope not being ready to get engaged (she was committed to Thomas) doesn’t add any validity to “slut” or “bitch”. Thomas got engaged/was planning babies with another woman several weeks after leaving Hope. But we don’t judge men for how fast they move (Thomas) and we blame those “sluts” and “bitches” for their actions (T/C), I guess, both in reel and real life.

Don’t get me wrong, I do think Hope was one of the more poorly written characters in 2024 just not for the above reasons. It’s because of them having her suddenly lusting after Finn after we heard her justifiably go on and on about how she wouldn’t tolerate being with a man torn between two women. [And you know why we got that story? Because your “Best Couple” is less than one-dimensional and they retired Sheila as that dimension.] Them not allowing her to confront her losses unless those characters are on-screen [besides the headaches/grabbing heart which were usually related to thinking about T/D]. C/H was simply a plot point to get to a umbrella story for the show. They didn’t invest real time (imagined time is another question) in building them up OR building Carter’s motivation up for the plot. But that can be said for how Bold writes in general – characters suffer at the hand of whatever abrupt plot TPTB think up and how fast they want to move on from it.

The Bitch Slap Line for Steffy? Yes!

Thomas Return? Yes. Recast now if MA is not returning. The drama wrench that would throw both in the coup and the H/C romance with H/T having a ton of unresolved emotions for each other x their commitments (family, Carter).

RB as Taylor should have gone down as worst recast but at least you noted some of the issues.

I wholeheartedly agree. Rebecca Budig is a talented actress but casting her as Taylor was a HUGE mistake. She should’ve been cast as a new, dynamic new female for the show. Annika wanted storylines outside of Hope/Liam, so this is why I think we have Hope going through all that she has in 2024. They seriously needs to address the absence of Matthew Atkinson. Like TELL US. His wife had a baby, sure but no soap actor takes this much time off for a baby. So something else is clearly going on. Ridge calling Hope a slut and bitch was the most absurd thing I have seen in awhile on that show. It made him look like a complete ass and Brooke should NEVER want to be with him again. They can rewrite history all they want but Hope was committed to Thomas. Just bc she didn’t want to marry him when the ink was barely dry on her divorce from Liam, they are writing this drivel. No one believes or buys it.

For my money, Van Hansis was the best male recast. More Lucas, please!

I like him in this part too, as long as he stays away from his old lover, he’s so sneaky, can’t stand or trust him, yuk!

Murder Everyone Forgot- Ava still hasn’t been forced to answer for killing Connie 11 years ago. GH should deal with that cold blooded murder before we worry about Sonny killing Jagger 4 months ago. Don’t you think? Connie was innocent. Jagger wasn’t.

Ava has been a pariah though through out her run on the show and so much doesn’t go right for her. We actually have to watch scenes her being talked down to by most of the characters on GH. While Sonny does bad things and remains untouchable.

Angie. You are spot on! Thank you.

And let’s not forget that Ava also killed AJ to coverup ConKate’s murder.

A lot of folks with partial memory recall the part where Sonny was holding the gun on AJ. But they forget that it was Ava’s gun and the trigger had already been pulled.

They also forget that AJ survived the shooting and was seemingly well into recovery a week later in the hospital when he suddenly had a cardiac arrest and rejoined us here in Hell.

You know… kinda like what happened to Sam and Dex in recent months. Ava can get digitalis as easy as Cyrus can, no doubt.

While you can say that Ava contributed to AJ’s death, it’s an exaggeration to say she killed AJ. Sonny still deserves the majority of the Blake for AJ’s death.

Ava was also partially responsible for Morgan’s death, but that is mostly on her now departed crazy sister’s shoulders.

Adding to that, Connie had painted the initials AJ ( for Ava Jerome) with her own blood before she died. This led Sonny to think AJ had killed Connie. As I see it, Ava and Sonny are both responsible for Connie’s death.

Connie (the Kelly Sullivan version) was never the sharpest tool in the shed. Yes, you’re dying, but it doesn’t take much longer to write “Ava” than “AJ”. So, she shares some blame in AJ’s death as well.

Who are we kidding? We all know it was RC’s pettiness that killed AJ.

Oh my! I never thought of that (AJ vs Ava). Yes, it was was RJ’s pettiness that killed AJ. Then after having Sonny and Ava ghoulishly get it on in the Quartermaine crypt on top of AJ’s freshly interred body, RJ makes fat jokes about Sean. AJ, like his father and like Georgie, should never been killed off. And AJ’s death story had an extra injection of unnecessary humiliation and disrespect.

Nahhhhhhhhh. If Sonny hasn’t answered all of these years, then neither should Ava. She played a man’s game as a woman. That’s boss.

I completely agree. Sonny is the poster child for reasonable gun control. He’s the guy who shoots first and ask questions later. He should legally not be allowed to own a gun.

Nah… Selina Wu is the authentic woman mob boss. Ava was just a wannabe who tried to cash in on the Jerome name when Julian was still in the business, and then couldn’t run away from it fast enough when Julian got in trouble.

I will give her credit for not being obsessed with taking over the Jerome business like her psycho sister Olivia always was.

Connie’s murder was mentioned a fair amount of times in 2024. First batch was around the BLQ-Chase wedding as to why Ava was not invited and should not attend the wedding.

Later, Kristina on the warpath consistently mentioned Connie as part of Ava’s laundry list of offenses.

If the show truly wanted to write off Ava, a copy of her voice recording confessing to Connie’s murder would magically appear. Thank goodness, it will remain buried as MW is too good to let go.

No one even knows that Ava thought she’d killed Nikolas and let him rot in the stables until she and Austin found time to bury him, and then just went about their business when his body went missing, lol. She continue to use Laura to this day, who naively thinks Ava was the loving wife to her son.

Worst Of Everything- Natalia Ramirez. Worst Character. Worst Story. Worst villain. Worst victim. Worst chemistry. Worst episode

I take it you don’t like Natalia. You were sort of subtle about it ( I do concur with your sentiments).

Here’s a case where Frank is probably too stubborn to admit a mistake, but wise enough to know things really aren’t working. If Frank and Varni thought the Sonny-Natalia pairing was a hit, La Rue would’ve had a contract months ago. As long as she’s on recurring, she can easily be written off in one episode.

Steffy & Finn are the best couple, no doubt!
Love that their love has triumphed over the challenges and can’t believe they’re going on FIVE solid years together.
They’re a unicorn in soaps, and despite all this time together they still feel brand new. Love that about them.

Hard to argue with JJY’s sentimental return this spring (and the subsequent re- emphasis of the Scorpios as a legacy family). A close second would have to be Ric Lansing’s return. He’s made quite an impact across the canvas. Hearst may be eligible in the Guest Category for the Emmys.

Most missed character remains Monica Quartermaine. Although with LC likely not returning, you could say the character wasn’t eligible.

Bet to differ on Kate Mansi. She’s at a fresh grave out in the rain, yet she comes away without any mud on her face or hands. She may get the Supporting Actress nomination that rightfully should go to Kristen Vaganos. As others mentioned , SSH is walking away with that category.

They’ve worked Jason better into story as the year ends – but he’s been primarily a “talk-to” character and not driven story.

Finally, in the Best Actress category come Emmy time – NLG could win if Y&R nominates both Sharon and Melody – splitting the vote.

Agree about Kate Mansi. From what I’ve seen, she is incapable of emoting ( crying). So she over compensates by shrieking and caterwauling. It moves me not.

Great recap as always! But…

— I quibble with the recast of DOOL’s Tate Black. I think that original actor Jamie Martin Mann was more convincing in the role, in large part because he was actually more age-appropriate for the character, more innocent, if you will, for the first-love storyline. Sadly, he wasn’t given much to do…

— Like a broken record, though not played here in a while, I will always do more than quibble with the continued presence of GH’s Sonny who is indeed a cold-blooded killer and thug. You can give him manic depression, you can pair him with a father with Alzheimer’s disease, you can put him in a wheelchair, you can give him amnesia, you can put him in scenes with other veteran characters who seemingly forget his misdeeds, you can try to put on as much lipstick on this pig as possible, but in the end, you still have the unmistakable truth that Sonny is a violent, abusive, calculating murderer of at least 2 characters: AJ Quartermaine and Jagger Cates.

2024 Y n R edition:

Most improved:
The feel of the show!!!
Mood lighting, grandiose sets and the direction of the scenes!!!
I think it’s because of Ed Scott but yes n r is feeling like the show I love again!! The scene intros and cuts are longer, not jagged and awkward, the sets are moodier and the music is a lil better so I hope it continues!!! And that sad parking lot park is gone with that cgi bench which is actually a massive improvement!!!

Most needed return :
Doug Davidson , Paul Newman

With his daughter slain, there’s no way Genoa s city’s very best detective wouldn’t return to avenge her death. She was also a lawyer and there’s no way GCPD wouldn’t put their best on the case! Especially with Cricket and Danny back they could play off all the beats of Paul and Crickets breakup . Even if the ptb convince Doug Davidson to return briefly and repair the bad blood for future short returns!

Most annoying new character:
Claire Newman

Yes she’s sweet and innocent , we get it, we don’t need everyone in Genoa city in awe of her every day of the week. I hope she amps up her game to compete with Summer

Characters who need a break from the screen stat:
Tie: Phyliss Summers and Victor Newman

These two actors are so larger than life that the swallow all the air from the other actors on the screen , so we don’t need them on every day because it’s overkill, a lil Victor and Phyliss go a long way. OK? Josh Griffith ? We know you kiss the ground Eric and Michelle walk on but it’s pathetic already, give them a lil rest, and maybe take them down a few notches !!

Couple Most needing to reunite!!!
Tie: Shick and Chadam!!!

Nick and Sharon and Adam and Chelsea are soulmates!! 2024 saw sooo very long overdue potential so I hope it continues!!
Joshua Morrow and Sharon Case are playing it like brother , sister lately so I really hope Joshua can step it up because imo it looks like Sharon Case is doing all the heavy lifting in the chemistry dept! Not sure if Morrow s heads in the game but I hope he can give the fans what they want and forget his obsession with a Phylis pairing because the last time was sad and empty!
Adam and Chelsea need a new foil now that Sally s out of the mix because Victor Newmans not it. He’s everywhere and had his hands in too many pots! Both actors are so talented and strong i hope Griffith can keep the momentum going !

Character who needs a reset:
Billy, Jason Thompson

Pretty obvious Billy’s character is very tired. He’s constantly whining and playing the victim card. He hasn’t worked in a while, from his time with Amanda shouting on rooftops to starting a sad podcast with Chelsea to the last desperate attempt with hints of him and Phyliss send Jason Thompson on a vacation, aka, the Jabot paris office!

Two characters who are too hot to waste!!:
Sally and Chance!!
Give them a brief fling if only to bring sexy back to the screen!!
The are a bit of outliers so maybe it could work to have them in their own orbit away from the Abbotts and Newmans!! Also imagine how dangerous Sally could be as a maybe Chancellor!! ?? Oh , how Jill and Nina’s head would explode!!!

Damien….you nailed it!!

Michael, you nailed it with this list!

Thomas on B&B is my most missed character by far. There’s so much more story to tell with him, not just with Hope but with everyone. MA was my favorite actor on the show and I miss his talent and charisma.

The problem is Hope was in the most interesting couple with Thomas, a slow 5-year and careful build, and now is floundering without him. Chasing Finn was very stupid. Carter is a nice guy who she settled for. Without Thomas around, there’s not much else besides Liam. Carter or LIam or anyone will seem like settling next to Thomas. They just can’t touch the chemistry, drama, and history (Ridge & Taylor’s son with Brooke & Deacon’s daughter) of Thomas & Hope.

Susan Seaforth Hayes deserves the Emmy. I would move her to Lead instead of Supporting because she led the Doug dies story. And even though she does not appear in as many episodes as others, she dominates when she does appear. I cried my eyes out watching Julie grieve. Julie & Susan both experienced the dream of decades with her soulmate which makes the pain of losing Doug & Bill all the more haunting. She deserves every award for being so vulnerable with the audience. Brava, Susan!

My one disagreement is with Kate Mansi. I don’t connect with Kristina at all, especially when I always saw Irene as Molly’s child. I wish Kristina was more supportive and Molly was more the lead sister.

And everyone else you praised: Sharon Case, Melody Thomas Scott, Paul Telfer, Finn Carr, etc were fantastic!

100% agreed!! I can’t really watch B n B until Thomas, Matthew Atkinson returns.
Hope and Thomas are the new super couple of the show !!!
Every male actor Hope hops on once he finally returns will be forgotten, it’s just filler let’s be honest.
Not sure if the actor requested time off because he got married , is having a child etc but it’s definitely weird Hope and Thomas were so hot until he just disappeared off the canvas with a quickie marriage to Paris!

Agree that Jane Elliott is an absolute treasure, but lately she’s been channeling Lila more than Tracy. The only time we saw her vicious side was in her backgammon games with Finn! Now she goes around as a shoulder to cry on and being magnanimous. I miss the venom. Agree on the loose end of Jagger’s cold-blooded murder, but why is no one wondering what became of Scott Baldwin?

I know. The Scott Baldwin thing is crazy. And remember Diane was constantly hounding Carly to spend time in public with Sonny to convince the public they’ve rekindled. Everything regarding Cates and the aftermath disappeared with Scott Baldwin.

Scotty has come and gone numerous times through the years. Hopefully, when Frank & crew decide to bring him back, Kin returns with an interesting storyline with minimal comic interpretation. Maybe even with long-lost daughter Serena in tow – although I’ve kind of given up we’ll ever see her in PC again.

Bravo! And Thank You for covering our soaps all year long, for better or worse. Happy New Year, Michael!

I can’t speak of the other 3 soaps that I don’t watch but GH my fave show period was disappointing this year more so then any other year for me and also a first for me being so critical of it, and to me it was all the writers fault, I mean they fumble lucky return royally let go of actors left and right, up their ick factor really high with drew and willow, and Sasha and Cody, and it all happier two writers that weren’t really new to the show, Chris van hatten and Elizabeth korte, they woke up overnight and started writing really crappy stuff. And please before the new year starts no more killings and cartoon villains like sidwell

Michael Fairman, Thank you, thank you, thank you for another exceptional year of covering daytime television. You are the best!!

Yikes. GH is voted the best soap. It’s the only soap I watch. I’m glad I haven’t tried to watch the others then. GH has been difficult enough to watch the last year. I laughed at the comments regarding Drew, Drew and Willow, and Lucky. Great descriptions for sure.

Just wanted to give you a great round of applause for putting in the time and energy in compiling this exhaustive summation of this year in soaps. You remain the one true and trustworthy voice of soap opera reporting. We appreciate you more than you might know ( due to our constant bickering that has nothing to do with you). Thank you.

Honestly I don’t even remember Alexis reacting to Gregory’s death. Nancy did an incredible job displaying grief for Sam, but I just don’t recall much written for Alexis reacting to Gregory’s death considering how close the characters had come.

Most ridiculous scene ever written should go to Diane when she learned of Sam’s death. She gave one of her shocked looks, and within minutes started lamenting to Jason that Robert still has feelings for Holly. It was so beyond stupid and out-of-character, such a callous reaction for Diane not only to switch gears so quickly but of all people to Jason, Sam’s ex love and mother of his son. And instead of rushing out of the office to see Alexis, her supposed bestie, she settles in for a chat about the aforementioned Robert and Holly. That scene was apparently written during two-for one writers lobotomy.

Best return for me is Rick. I just love Ric and Rick Hearst didn’t skip a beat in the role. Still, another big miss on the part of the writers is barely one scene between Rick and Sonny.

What happened to Christmas? No Santa; no big, happy, gatherings. We got only the females in Maxi’s living room, and nothing at the Quaretermaines other than a few people listening to Gio sing. Jason said he was going to be at the family Christmas, but that was never seen. Another missed opportunity to have the remaining Q’s all together, with Jason finally being back at the house, and the writers skipped right over that opportunity. As for Jason and Tracy? They’ve only had one scene. Again, missed opportunities. Instead of seeing Jason and Danny at Carly’s house, it would’ve been more fun (and poignant) to see them at the Q’s.

Lucky? I actually enjoyed his scenes as captive by Sidwell. But once back in Port Charles? He was nowhere to be found after displaying his angst that he wasn’t a doner. He wasn’t at the hospital during Lulu’s operation; Laura sat alone waiting to hear if her daughter made it through. Invisible Keven wasn’t even with her. What is the point to Kevin at this time in GH history? I always loved Kevin; but in recent years he’s barely in a scene. Laura is always without him and Kevin no longer has scenes at the hospital. He just pops in for a few lines every few months. I’d rather see the character written off than this obnoxious “let’s pretend he’s somewhere.” I don’t watch a show to imagine characters off-screen somewhere…. I do hope that JJ sticks around and that his contract isn’t only for months or a year. While I’d love to see a Liz/Lucky reunion, (for me not Liz and Franco nor Liz and Finn ever came close to Liz and Lucky), I’d hate to get invested in them again only for him to leave again…

Aside from the skipping of Christmas, they also skipped the infamous Pizza-for- Thanksgiving-Dinner at the Q’s. So they skipped both holidays.

GH wins Best Soap by default as the others were worse. GH has wrecked their cast for 2025 so not hopeful and the show does not appear to be on ABC’s radar for next year. Writers have gone crazy. B&B was 2nd with the 10 toes storyline and the Luna craziness. Plan to give Beyond the Gates a try after 25 years without a new soap. Bring back the Younger Actress/Actor categories for Daytime Emmy please! Miss little Violet already on GH.

No for Alexis, Christina was better even Ava acting. And little Violet was excellent or Charolette. For Men-Ned for his performance of a switched character.

Ned thought he was Eddie Maine in 2023. He regained his memory in the fall of that year.

The Emmy eligibility is for calendar year 2024. Unfortunately, Wally submitted for Lead Actor as Ned last year and wasn’t nominated.

‘The Price is Right’ Contestant Wins Largest Prize in a Single Pricing Game in the 54-Year history of the Daytime Game Show on CBS

On the Friday, May 8 Mother’s Day episode of The Price is Right, a retired veteran won over $240,000 in cash and prizes making her takeaway the largest prize ever won in a single pricing game in the 54-year history of the daytime version of the CBS game show.

The contestant, “Vanesa from Virginia” bested the previous record of $210,000 in a single pricing game of Cliffhangers set over a decade ago in 2016. The moment occurred when Vanesa played “The Lion’s Share,” the new high,” the new high-stakes branded game that debuted this season through a partnership with BetMGM.

In the game, contestants have to guess the prices of grocery items to earn up to five balls. Each ball is then dropped into a wind tunnel, revealing a hidden prize amount. After each reveal, contestants face a tense decision to walk away with their current winnings or risk it all to continue.

Vanesa went for the gusto! She didn’t hesitate and pushed forward through every round, ultimately revealing the prizes for all five balls, winning $227,500 in cash and a luxury trip for two to Morocco valued at $12,650. Those impressive winning amounted to $240,150 as her daughter cheered her on from the audience.

According to BetMGM and TPIR producers, Fremantle, “The Lion’s Share” is the first custom-branded game in the show’s history, and the first new pricing game on the show since 2021. BetMGM and Fremantle sealed a multi-year deal last year that lends  The Price is Right and Family Feud intellectual property (IP) rights for slots, table games and non-traditional casino games.

The Price is Right is broadcast weekdays on CBS and streams on Paramount+* (11:00 AM-12:00 PM, ET/10:00-11:00 AM, PT). John Quinn is the executive producer. Drew Carey is the host.

So, what do you think of Vanesa from Virginia’s huge win on The Price is Right? Do you watch the show weekdays? Let us know via the comment section. But first, watch how it all happens below!

DAYS Lauren Koslow Temporarily Fills-In for Jess Walton as ‘The Young and the Restless’ Jill Abbott

Published

In a ironic twist, Lauren Koslow, who currently plays Kate Roberts on Days of Our Lives is returning to The Young and the Restless to play Jill Abbott while temporarily filling in for Jess Walton. Koslow will appear for five episodes beginning on Thursday, June 25.

Koslow first appeared on The Young and the Restless back in 1984 in what was her first soap opera role when she was cast as Lindsey Wells. Now, she returns decades later subbing for Walton, who due to a scheduling conflict, was was unable to travel to Los Angeles when the storyline called for Jill. The Emmy-winning Walton has played the Jill since 1987 and went on recurring status with the show in 2012. Jess also left Los Angeles to reside in Oregon in 2011.

Making this all the richer was the original Jill played by Brenda Dickson, often shared scenes with Koslow’s Y&R character. Lauren played Lindsey Wells until 1986, before moving over to The Bold and the Beautiful as Margo Lynley. Koslow was B&B’s Margo from 1987–1992, and again in 2002. Then, in 1996, she was cast on Days of Our Lives as Kate Roberts, replacing Deborah Adair, and she has been in Salem ever since. But there’s still another another twist to this casting history. Y&R viewers recall Deborah Adair also played Jill, after Brenda Dickson left in 1980, and following a brief stint by Bond Gideon, before heading to DAYS to originate the role of Kate.

THE DAYS AND Y&R CONNECTION

As soap fans know, Days of Our Lives and The Young and the Restless are both part of Sony. Y&R is produced by Bell Dramatic Serial Company in association with Sony Pictures Television, while DAYS is owned by Corday Productions and distributed by Sony.

So, having Koslow visit The Young and the Restless to fill in for Jess Walton has nothing to do with her continued role of Kate on DAYS. In fact, a rep for the show shared that her upcoming appearance on Y&R, “does not affect her status with the show in any way.” Recently, Stacy Haiduk reprised her role of Patty Williams on Y&R, even though she is still being seen as Kristen DiMera on DAYS.

In a joint statement offered up to TV Insider, executive producer, Sally McDonald and head writer, Josh Griffith expressed, “We’re extremely grateful to Lauren Koslow for returning to her Y&R roots and temporarily stepping into the role of Jill. We want to extend our sincere thanks to Ken Corday (executive producer) and Noel Maxam (co-executive producer) at Days of Our Lives and Peacock. Their support embodies the collaborative spirit of the daytime television community.”

McDonald and Griffith clarified that Jess Walton is forever their Jill and shared, “Jess Walton is an enduring cornerstone of Y&R. We look forward to welcoming her back to Genoa City as her schedule permits and celebrating her extraordinary 40th anniversary as the iconic Jill Abbott.”

So, what do you think of Days of Our Lives Lauren Koslow stepping in for Jess Walton as Jill Abbott? Excited to see what she does in the role while filling in for the Jess? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

Josh Griffith Steps Down as Executive Producer of ‘The Young and the Restless,’ Remains Head Writer; Sally MacDonald Upped to Sole EP

Published

By

The Young and the Restless has made some key changes behind the scenes with the news on Wednesday, May 6 that Josh Griffith, who has served as the series executive producer and head writer concurrently, has decided to relinquish the production duties of his tenure, and concentrate on just crafting the tales for the citizens of Genoa City.

Sally MacDonald, the longtime Daytime Emmy-winning director of Y&R who was serving as the soap’s co-executive producer, will now be upped to the solo EP of the top-rated daytime drama series.

As first reported by Soap Central, Griffith will continue as Y&R’s head writer in the restructuring, in the position he has held since 2019 with the departure of former EP and head writer, Mal Young.  Soap Opera Digest also confirmed Griffith was stepping down as the soap’s executive producer.

Photo: JPI

In fact, it was back in August 2018, that the veteran Griffith returned to Y&R as supervising producer. Once, Mal Young departed the show, Griffith became the show’s head writer and co-executive producer with another longtime Y&R behind the scenes veteran in Tony Morina. Later in 2023, when Morina exited the soap, Josh became the sole executive producer.

Throughout his soap opera career, Griffith has written for Santa Barbara, One Life to Live, As the World Turns, General Hospital and Days of our Lives and co-created the defunct Sunset Beach.

MacDonald has been a CBS daytime vet since back in 1983 and joined The Young and the Restless in 1989 as a production supervisor, working her way up to director. The directing team at Y&R that has included MacDonald has won 8 Daytime Emmys along the way and picked up a Directors Guild of America Award.

So, what do you think of Josh Griffith stepping down as executive producer at The Young and the Restless, while keeping his position as head writer? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
