Oprah Winfrey's OWN Buys New Soap From Tyler Perry: "The Haves And The Have Nots"!

Courtesy/HarpoProds

Courtesy/HarpoProds

Has Oprah Winfrey decided to air a soap opera on her OWN Network?  Well from the sounds of it, no matter how it’s framed, Tyler Perry’s new dramatic series from his Tyler Perry Studios entitled, The Haves And The Have Nots,  will sounds very familiar to soap fans; centering on the the perils and plights of a wealthy family and a family from the poor side of the tracks … something that has been seen on any number of your favorite nighttime or daytime dramas!

According to Deadline.com today, OWN who announced a multi-year deal with Perry to produce and deliver scripted series, just greenlighted two; one this drama and the other a comedy!

The premise of the drama The Haves And The Have Nots is about the dynamics of the affluent Cryer family and the impoverished family of their housekeeper Hanna, and the obstacles and secrets that exist within both families.

So soapers, what do you think?  Will you take a look at the new drama from Tyler Perry on OWN? Could this help Oprah change her tune about soaps being an “institution”? Weigh-in!

if this soap is abt a rich black family then that would be great. there needs to be more racial diversity on soaps and more diverse portrayals of racial minorities. all the daytime soap operas and primetime soaps have rich families that are white. a rich black family would bring a new dynamic. maybe this should be victoria rowell’s comeback vehicle.

Room for one more at the table? I could swear O said that soaps were a dying commodity – all of a sudden she changes her tune for one of her friend’s soaps. BS!! She’s a phoney – never liked her and now she’s given me even more justification. Hope OWN tanks.

Welel, I wish Oprah the best, but I don’t support her anymore. She had a chance to get two soaps, and she didn’t take it. And as I recall, she told people to stop emailing her, and that if there were another dime to be got out of the shows, they’d still be on (paraphrased). That was a hard time for soap fans, and she didn’t support us or care. So, now? She’s on her own. JMO.

Michael – I just wrote this on the FB post, but I’d like to share it here as well.

Oprah has been thinking about getting involved/producing/creating an African American centric soap for close to 25 years. She came to our house when my youngest brother (now 24) was an infant to consult with my mom about soaps. Perhaps, the time has finally come where she’s following through on that dream? (Though I’m not sure about the Tyler Perry component.)

OWN is a cable station that a whole lot of people DO NOT GET. I know she was an AMC fan and she could not SAVE that show..why back another show when sooo many fans want their old one back? Hmm I guess it will be an ethnic program if it comes from Tyler Perry. Sad still miss OLTL a lot!!

Oye! talk about adding fuel to the fire….

wasn’t it said… Oprah said soaps no longer have a future… and it would behoove her to “buy” AMC and/or OLTL… and help her sinking ship?

agree? that, Kudos to Tyler Perry… for his hiring and producing movies for minorities,(which no longer exists? ie: the elections)people of color, should be hired… thats understood…

I hope it does work…. as, soaps/serials… will find an audience, if it’s good.

Tyler Perry… please hire daytime alumni.

Would have been nice if she saved OLTL or AMC but maybe it was bad timing and she wouldn’t have had complete creative control or something .. who knows.. that said, I’m glad that Tyler is even thinking about bringing a soap to OWN and if the cast is worthy of watching, I’d tune in and check it out.

I like Tyler Perry, and can see where working on a project with him is a mutually beneficial move for both of them, but it is just too bad Oprah was not interested in airing shows of a soap opera nature, when she was asked about One Live to Live/AMC. Oprah said she wanted her network more geared to the African-American audience which is fine. However Oprah told the AMC & OLTL fans NO which is also fine. I don’t understand why any of you are surprised. The reason she bought Perry’s show is obvious! The woman is so racist it’s pathetic. When she turned down OLTL & AMC she turned her back on the very same people who made her who she is. I for one would never have turned on her show if it wasn’t for the fact she followed GH. I don’t think Oprah is racist. She wanted to put her own stamp on the OWN network (Oprah Winfrey’s Network… need I say more?). But, buying OLTL and AMC would have been a good business decision and she wanted to prove that she has knows what will make a network a hit. Having one hit on one network does not mean you know how to guide an entire network with shows ALL geared to empower women. An hour a day, maybe. 24 hours? No. She’s hoping this “hail Mary” with Tyler Perry will rescue her dying network. Sorry. Won’t be… Read more »

I don’t believe that OWN is geared toward the. African-American community, because the majority of her followers have been Caucasian. I understand the disappointment of AMC/OLTL fans that Oprah didn’t “save” those shows. But the truth is thode shows were not making money. If they had been, ABC would have kept them on. There is a reason for the term showBUSINESS. That reason is there is a buiness aspect to entertainment. No entertainment executive worth his/her salt will invest resources in something that has been proven NOT to make money, such your beloved AMC/OLTL. On the other hand, Tyler Perry’s works are PROVEN MONEYMAKERS! Tyler has a LOYAL following that translates into big bucks at the box office and profitable… Read more »

BTW OWN is on track to become profitable within five years. Also, investing in projects from Tyler Perry allows Oprah to tap into the wealth known as Tyler Perry fans. This group is so valuable that Tyler Perry was offered the lead role in the ALEX CROSS movie so the producers could tap into that fan base. Now to respond to the other reply about why OWN has struggled: The Oprah Winfrey Show was syndicated. Harpo isn’t a start-up like Prospect Park, throwing Oprah behind the idea of keeping soaps alive is probably a more investment worthy idea than PP was. Oprah had the means to do this. Now, if you think all products in a business are front runners in generating profits then you’re laughable. OLTL would have been the reel-in that would have garnered her network 24/7 support from a loyal block of viewers that are proven TV watchers. Take a loss on one, and win on three. I don’t accept the notion that Prospect Park could not continue AMC/OLTL because it is a start up. That is what start ups do…take those types of risks. The point was that those to whom Prospect Park looked for funding also considered it a bad investment. So Oprah was not alone in her assesment of the situation. Furthermore, if she is such a smart business woman, why is her network failing so miserable? I’ll tell you why…..because when the network started, she did nothing but air reruns of The Oprah Show, Dr. Oz & Dr. Phil…. Rather than taking on at least OLTL….which was continually improving in the ratings, was always under budget & had a stronger fan base than that of AMC, there was no reason for her to not pick up the show. I sadly must agree with that prediction and I suspect the Bell soaps would not be too far behind. First, I would not watch anything on OWN …. partially because I find Oprah arrogant and partially because I don’t want to take the time to hunt down her channel (not even sure our cable provider carries it).

It isn’t clear if this Perry show is a daily or weekly broadcast. If it is weekly I would allow her somewhat of a pass because there is a world of difference between a daily soap and a weekly one. So, her refusal to take over AMC or OLTL would not be changed.

This is the part that gets me:

“OWN who announced a multi-year deal with Perry… just green-lighted TWO; one this drama and the other a comedy!”

She green-lighted TWO shows, not ONE. TWO of them.

How am I suppose to take her seriously when she said something about financial considerations in saving AMC and OLTL? Now she suddenly has money to support a drama AND a comedy. It sounds like she could have easily save one of those shows.

Michael B. Jordan Pays Tribute To Chadwick Boseman: “Since Nearly The Beginning Of My Career, Starting with All My Children When I was 16 Years Old You Paved The Way For Me”

Following the news of the tragic death of now motion picture icon, Chadwick Boseman late Friday, tributes and sentiments have poured in from celebrities, politicians and fans from all across the world.

Chadwick Boseman passed away late last week at the age of 43 from colon cancer – a battle he kept silent about for the last four years of life.

Photo: JPI

No one could be more intertwined with Boseman’s career than that of his fellow Black Panther star, Michael B. Jordan.  For Jordan took over the role of Reggie Porter on All My Children from Boseman after the late actor lasted one week, following standing up to, and addressing concerns, of racial stereotypes in the way that the part was written.  Reggie was introduced to Pine Valley as a gang member in 2003.  As previously reported it was Boseman who helped the soap opera improve the role that Jordan took over with some recommendations.

Now Michael B. Jordan has written a heartfelt remembrance of Chadwick that he shared on his Instagram, and what he has meant to his life, including how he showed him how to be better, to honor purpose and create legacy.

Read below Michael’s post:

“I’ve been trying to find the words, but nothing comes close to how I feel. I’ve been reflecting on every moment, every conversation, every laugh, every disagreement, every hug…everything.

I wish we had more time.

One of the last times we spoke, you said we were forever linked , and now the truth of that means more to me than ever. Since nearly the beginning of my career, starting with All My Children when I was 16 years old you paved the way for me. You showed me how to be better, honor purpose, and create legacy. And whether you’ve known it or not…I’ve been watching, learning and constantly motivated by your greatness.

I wish we had more time.

Everything you’ve given the world … the legends and heroes that you’ve shown us we are … will live on forever. But the thing that hurts the most is that I now understand how much of a legend and hero YOU are. Through it all, you never lost sight of what you loved most. You cared about your family , your friends, your craft, your spirit. You cared about the kids, the community, our culture and humanity. You cared about me. You are my big brother, but I never fully got a chance to tell you, or to truly give you your flowers while you were here.

I wish we had more time.

I’m more aware now than ever that time is short with people we love and admire. I’m gonna miss your honesty, your generosity, your sense of humor, and incredible gifts. I’ll miss the gift of sharing space with you in scenes. I’m dedicating the rest of my days to live the way you did. With grace, courage, and no regrets. “Is this your king!?” Yes . he . is!  Rest In Power Brother.”

Chadwick Boseman, ‘Black Panther’ Star and the Original Reggie On AMC, Dies At 43

In just heartbreaking news in an already dismal 2020, one of the brightest motion picture stars, Chadwick Boseman has died at the age of 43.

Boseman was battling colon cancer for the last four years of his life.  According to his rep, Boseman was diagnosed in 2016 with stage 3 colon cancer and his battle continued as it progressed to stage 4

Chadwick passed away with his wife and family by his side in his home.   In a shocking revelation, all of the movie performances in the last four years he has filmed were done in between chemotherapy and countless surgery.

Boseman is best known for his groundbreaking role as King T’Challa  in Black Panther.   His performance was the first ever Marvel Studio movie headlined by a black actor.  The film was nominated for an Academy Award.   He first appeared as the character in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War.

Most recently, Chadwick appeared in the Spike Lee’s Vietnam War drama Da 5 Bloods, and this year he’s due to appear opposite Viola Davis Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” the film adaptation of the August Wilson play.  The actor starred in other films, including playing James Brown in Get On Up and Jackie Robinson in 42,  and the lead role in Marshall.

However, Boseman actually got his start on All My Children when he was the original actor cast in the role of Reggie Porter.  He appeared on the soap for only one week before the role was recast with none other than Michael B. Jordan, and their paths could eventually cross years later on multiple film projects.

In an interview in 2019, Boseman revealed what led him to be fired from All My Children stating:  “When I got it (the part), I was like, ‘This is not part of my manifesto. This is not part of what I want to do. How can I make it work?’ Because with a soap opera, you don’t know the full scope of what’s gonna happen — you don’t know where they’re gonna take the character, because they don’t always know where the character is going. And because of that, there’s possibly room for me to adjust this and change it and make it so it’s stereotypical on the page but not on the screen.”

For Boseman had issues with how Reggie was portrayed and how it was written with racial stereotypes.  In story, Reggie was a young gang member who was adopted by Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) and her husband, Jackson Montgomery (Walt Willey). “I remember going home and thinking, ‘Do I say something to them about this? Do I just do it?’ And I couldn’t just do it. “I had to voice my opinions and put my stamp on it. And the good thing about it was, it changed it a little bit for Michael B. Jordan.”  Apparently the producers told Boseman he was too much trouble but took some of his suggestions on the role moving forward.
