RATINGS: Days of our Lives Continues Downward Trend!

Courtesy/NBC

Courtesy/NBC

The ratings are out for the week of March 30th through April 3rd, and it was NBC’s Days of our Lives whose numbers continue to dwindle!

Days of our Lives was the only soap of the four network daytime dramas to be in the minus column this week, but its total viewer numbers are down to 2,197,000, and the show lost another  -73,000 total viewers for the ratings period.

However, things did not look good in the key demo categories either. DAYS was the only soap to lose viewers in each demo, and where for the fourth straight week the NBC sudser tied its all-time lows in: Total Household ratings share 1.64/5 (-.06/-.19), Women 18-49 demo rating 0.68/5 (-.01/-.22), and Women 18-34 rating demo DAYS 0.32 (-.01/-.16).

During the ratings week in story in Salem, hell broke loose at Sonny (Freddie Smith) and Will’s (Guy Wilson) wedding anniversary party, the secret of Paul’s (Christopher Sean) paternity was kicking into high gear, and Adrienne (Judi Evans) and Lucas (Bryan Dattilo) slept together for the first time.

Elsewhere, General Hospital gained the most viewers for the ratings period during its 52nd Anniversary week which featured the harrowing revelation of Luke’s (Tony Geary) childhood past and more.  GH gained +198,000 in total viewers for the week totaling 2,962,000.  The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful also gained viewers and continued to out distance the pack in the number one and two spots, respectively.  Of note: On April 3rd there was a national pre-emption during President Obama’s press conference.

Numbers are based on Live+Same Day ratings. Courtesy SON

(Compared to Last Week/Compared to Last Year)

Total Viewers
1. Y&R 4,701,000 (-102,000/+127,000)
2. B&B 3,665,000 (+77,000/+130,000)
3. GH 2,962,000 (+198,000/+110,000)
4. DAYS 2,197,000 (-73,000/-237,000)

So what do you think of Days of our Lives falling ratings?  Is the show difficult for you to sit through for an entire episode? What improvements would you make it to it to help it rebound? Do you think the big returns with Peter Reckell (Bo) and Stephen Nichols (Patch) coming back will help in a big ratings spike?  Share your thoughts below!

I see that you only report the ratings when gh is on the rise. Where were you when they kept hitting lows 3 weeks in a row?

I agree

I agree too and it seems all the soap sites do that. GH is ok but it isnt must see tv as everyone seems to think it is.

I agree I have shut GH off. Its the worst soap ever. Where did frankenRon pull this out of. Luke killed his parents ???

Yeah. GH is basically a turn off now. The entire year of Fluke was a wasted story. The character of Luke isn’t any more compelling than he was before this miasma of twists and turns that evolved into nothing. His character wasn’t more developed, the story added nothing. It was a good episode for the 50th but it was hardly any great payoff for the rest of the incoherent dreck. And it certainly wasn’t worth ret-conning thirty years of story.

OK..
here is the bad thing=

— on live — viewing..

I, as probably a million others do not watch ”live” or same day ..

I am not in the numbers counted 🙁 whaaaa I don’t count 🙁

(imagine the numbers if ALL/EVERYBODY was actually counted..

Agree 100%. I may watch one some same day, but I watch other soaps on the internet ALL the time. Why doesn’t this type of viewership count? I think the way the way viewership is counted is VERY OUTDATED and does NOT reflect interest in a particular show.

shucks : thanks su

it does seem like a downward “spiral”

i’m not giving up that with the advent of new hires…

head writing team
and producers

that NBC / Sony / Days : mean business

carry on and maintain daytime… this is a loud audience that i relish.. adamant nonetheless

ps: i’m always behind the radar and under the gun… i’m guaranteed 2-3 eps behind… for both GH and DAYS

but… I remain vigilant

I also record the show and watch later -seems they do use a very outdated model for determining viewer numbers. It raises the question of whether a bad economy is good for soap counts, since more people are out of jobs and are home to ‘live’ watch and be counted. Then once the economy improves, more people get jobs, have to record the show, and are no longer counted. If they are worried that people who record the show fast forward past the commercials (which isn’t true for all) they should take this into account in designing their ads. Most viewers have to watch the screen when they fast forward in order to stop at the right spot. Why not have their company’s name and/or logo in one corner throughout the ad, as it will clearly show up through fast-forwarding. Capture the viewer! So ad companies could do a better job too.
Seeing that I am not in a group that is counted, or counts- annoys me. Generally speaking, it’s not a good idea to annoy people.

I’m don’t always watch GH same day either. Sometimes I’m working, other days busy outside my home for other things. I don’t have a recorder, but watch missed live episodes on youtube the next day. I have to assume other viewers do the same similar thing, not for just GH but the other soaps as well. So maybe it all evens out. But can you imagine the increase in numbers if they were able to add all of the non-live in! And even though I don’t watch DOOL’s I read some of comments from it’s viewers. Sounds like trouble. Hope they get their act together. Don’t want to lose another soap.

You’re sooo right, Su. But, boy, the way you tell it? You simply crack me up. I need you in the morning as much as my fresh cup of coffee.

I am not gay and do have friends that are. Do you think it might be showing Will or whom ever in bed with one another? I watch Days but when it comes to my grand children I will not have it the program on because of this. And yes, you do have other problems get another writer!!

Hi Lind, Soaps def are very scandalize.. I am hoping anytime then there is anyone in bed with the same sex or the opposite sex you are not allowing your grandchildren to see this. It should be the same reaction for you either way… If not.. I am sensing some issues you have with gay people…..
Building shame in young kids on gay relationships is not a good Grandmothering action.. (That is only if you truly are not allowing them to see two girls or guys in bed and feel that a guy and girl is ok)..

Bad writing and cheap sets are taking their toll.

days is done! i havnt watchd a full episode in months! their only saving grace will be kirstens return except she s only around for a couple of weeks and there s been next to no promotion for it!
the only storylines im midly invested in is jj and paige, teresa/ brady , and maybe paul and sonny
everything else is ff
days needs some serious 911 if its going to make it to 51. geez

Days will be cancelled very soon, sorry to say this. But that’s what I feel. I love Days, but very painful to watch right now.

And of course that means that GH fans will have to suffer through one or two more “stars” coming over to that show.

Well if you mean “soon” as in after September 2016 (the current renewal), that is still a year from now.

Yeah I hate to say it but at this point it looks like Days won’t be with us much longer. They messed up this year and they even had the option of having Kristen on longer but they didn’t. So many boring storylines except with Will/Paul/Sonny and it’s sad because they have so many great characters/actors. I hope it’s not too late by the time the new writers and actors coming back.

The best soap ever is DAYS . New fresh storyline. Superb acting!! Eve was terrific mourning paige. Hardly wait each day. Dont take it away. PLEASE!!!

I only watch on days with Serena, Eric, or Theresa. The rest of the show is terrible.

Days best story is Sonny/Will/Paul and unfortunately the only interesting story…unfortunately its too much of a good thing and dominates the show with nothing else waiting in the wings for us fans to look forward to…as for the rest of the show, you have unappealing newbies in unappealing stories…Eve/JJ is a draggy goin nowhere story that could be so much better had Jack been there…Melanie sleepwalks through her storyline and is a complete fail paired with Brady…Teressa’s baby story needs Kristen stat…show needs new characters to refreshen a show but it needs its vets and core family more…bring back Shawn and Belle…or have Shawn missing and have that the reason Bo has been gone—he is searching for his missing son who is witness to a murder…bring back Melissa who has kept a big secret from her cousin Jen…Jens late husband Jack is the father of Melissa’s grown son Nathan…bring back Jack yet again and turn him and Jen into the next generations Tom and Alice…it is possible!!!

GH gained viewers for its special 52nd anniversary, which i liked in spite of some flaws, but will they stay…the episodes that followed so far aren’t interesting…just ok…Ava will predictably be cured, Jasons reveal is draggy(would be better if Monica was around), and i could care less if Maxi picks Spin or Nathan…too much change in Kiki’s personality-she wouldve never went along with Morgans plans but would try to work things out with Micheal for the good of Avery/A.J….Franco/Nina are just pointless filler moments…GH is ok but not so good since the hoopla over Luke/Fluke seemingly ended(he could still be Bill) with the shows 52nd anniversary episode…i only watch occasionally now…jmho!!!

GH: i’m more than convinced… Sam and nuJake “do not” have chemistry, or any thing in common

after Mondays ep… when her car broke down… as she was driving to move in with Patrick… she stopped by the car shop

and who should be their.. but “Jason”

Sam was dressed to the “nines” as it were : ( a matter of opinion) with her black bra and spiked black boots … stiletto action

GH : (honestly) seriously? as “Jason” offers to give her a ride “home”… as she hops on the motorcycle… (pandering) to the mindless… duh? LOL

and that’s all they need to do ??? to further this story… this is worse than listening to how exhausting Carly is … with her declaration of “Jason” being HER bff

Liz has declared she’s in love with “Jason” : and doesn’t see how much fun Ric Lansing IS ???? huh?

LOL : GH production thinks that Jane Elliott’ Tracy act is going to save the Fluke storyline… now that every thing is out in the open… they’ve been relying on the audience accepting that if Tracy buys in to this… so shouldn’t we

prop : I’m LOVING Nikolas Cassadine… and even Hayden… mix and mingle… and dalliance… get it on… and MOVE his mojo, moxie, and man up… he’s the saving grace

little spence can phantom of the opera all he wants… i’m over him…. as the brat has gotten in to the safe… how lame is that? thereby… giving Nikolas… up.. with the Alan Quartermaine ring.. that Sam lovingly portrayed to “Jake doe” that it was a family heirloom that she wanted to pass on to Danny Edward… LOL

GH production: forced : bait and Hook : cloak and dagger much?

the one thing that comes to mind… aside from delish Nikolas… was, in fact, Dee Wallace Stone portrait of sister Pat

Chad Duell : ??? dim turn as STAR frontburner … what an embarrassment… he cant’ even act drunk… with allergies… LOL if he wins the emmy… and it’s one of the weakest categories… it belongs to Jacob Young

seriously? honestly… writers… try something with Sabrina… I have been liking her take as of late… Chad manning up… machismo… with his turn at bringing down Sonny and heading up ELQ… LAME !

Olivia! do not let your guard down.. with loud moth overbearing Carly! if you own part of the metro court… bring her down a few notches! stand up and charge your own energies… c’mon ‘Livia… cajones ! you are the one that deserves the emmy in your category

Anthony Geary : rest
retire

this Fluke story has given no just desserts

OK

I’m still waiting for Nina, Franco, Ava, and Dr. O

I should state… : that, Nikolas could simply say… that Helena had the ring… and Nikolas could play dumb… and not let on that he’s known

dang !

Tyler Christopher is bring it

Agree,GH probably gained some viewers for the 52nd,but now back to the garbage. GH’s demo numbers are sluggish, they could be right back to lows soon if they continue unpopular stories. I feel Michelle Stafford,Rebecca Budig, and Billy Miller have been duds. The Jason story has flopped. Instead of hiring soap vets, why can’t GH hire some teenagers and young adults to connect more with young people.

jimh You hit the nail on the head. I can’t watch. I am done.

I’m very sorry to hear this. I enjoy Days very much, I like the characters and stories. They don’t abruptly stop stories and leave you hanging. The scenes look alive and complete. I understand many long time viewers are dissatisfied because they feel the show’s history is not honored. Since I’ve only watch for a year, I cannot comment on that. I’m sure that would frustrate me if I’d invested decades in watching the show and long time characters development. Since I don’t know anything about the history, I’m just enjoying what I see now. I certainly hope this does not mean that Days is in danger of cancellation.

I do have some suggestions. Give Eve a man to divert her attention from her daughter’s boyfriend. Kassie DePaiva is wonderful. Give her a strong man to work with and you will see magic. The elephant statue thing went on way too long. (You really wasted Melissa Archer. She can do a great job given an storyline with legs.) You should have brought this Zander guy in much sooner. I hope Zander will assist Victor in taking down Clyde. Bring back Kristen. (I do realize Eileen Davidson is a very busy woman.) Rafe needs a storyline. Please develop the relationship between Adrienne and Lucas. And I’m sick of that Nicole. She’s nothing but trouble. She screwed over Eric and now she’s giving Daniel grief. She’s in everybody’s business. A brash character like that does come in handy so I don’t want her gone. Just don’t focus on her so much. I would also like to see Hope and Aiden get involved in a major story. I like them together. I suppose they will be featured when her missing husband shows up for the 50th anniversary. More than that, maybe they could work together on some major crime story.

I like everything you’ve suggested just about! I’m still committed to watching it and even though it’s gotten pretty slow, I am still enjoying it. In my opinion, things are just moving too slowly so that by the time the payoff comes around, I’ve lost a fair bit of interest. The characters seem to spend more time having the same conversations over and over again that to me, it’s just not that interesting to watch. I don’t want to be raced through story, but moving things along a bit couldn’t hurt. With the JJ/Eve/Paige story, it’s time for Paige to figure it out as it’s just been going so long that I’m begging these characters to do something else. Anything else.

“… Since I don’t know anything about the history, I’m just enjoying what I see now. ”

dang!

that’s all the proof I need… thank you, Llainviewer717

Days is my history with serial … of the 4 remaining

you know… I do take a step back @times… for

LOL my take … my marquees.. some spotlight

passion, going on 35+ years… strong

I WISH the production teams… listened to the fans alike

I’m gobsmacked by this site

it’s few and far between: I can’t tell you a single person… maybe one or two… in my social circle who continue to watch .. and they admit with a laugh

back in the day… THIS was water cooler
This was … thee creme de la creme

Days of OUR Lives : is faltering

is this one of those times… when they WILL save face and not cancel the one cornerstone.. NBC lets… and challenges themselves to keep this product alive

Days… for me : continues the tradition of evolving relationships.. and family

of the 4 available

it’s DAYS I beam more

it’s living in Salem that I want

I can’t stand Daniel… why is he the caveat? why do all things end, start, his participation OF… everything DAYS is offering? his acting is SO boring

if he was let go… I think the audience of : would breath… and endorphins would pulsate with vim and vigor

muster is not far off track… I hope.. that the new headwriters and producers rally

I’ve been a true fan of DOOL forever, hope NBC doesn’t pull the plug on it, as even though a character or story line doesn’t work, it is entertaining to watch, the actors are true at heart and I will keep tuning in as I always have over the years..

I agree with you Sheila, DAYS is usually entertaining. And, I love DAYS a bit more than I do with GH, I love my soaps. However, I like many others, find myself frustrated with both soaps. DAYS is so traditional compared to GH, where I find it’s all over the place, with DAYS, I love the consistency of characters. Now, some characters are great and, some are developed so poorly. DAYS must stop taping so far in advance, this 6 months pre-tape is complete who-ha in this day and age, it’s outdated, and, as many have articulated so are the sets. The 6 month who-ha is my biggest complaint, there’s no way for DAYS to make changes. They need to get with the times, and tape 4-6 weeks in advance. There’s a list of characters and actors on DAYS that must be cut out. DAYS needs a major facelift. I hope the new head writers shape up, otherwise the show will end at the end of 2016. And, the cancellation of DAYS would be awful for fans and also the other 3 existing soaps. If DAYS is cancelled, I would fear the same fate for General Hospital. CBS has the highest rating, those two soaps will continue. Real soap fans of DAYS must watch daily, and voice their frustrations, it’s the only way the show will take notice. I want DAYS on the air for another five years. And, this rate, the show will end in 2016, I don’t want that, the actors want to maintain their jobs, I’m sure, and fans – the real loyal fans want DAYS to continue moving forward. DAYS needs a new PR team, a new everything. Well, almost everything.

@Shiela & Jeremy : “Thank You” and yes, I know there are stalwart and loyal fans beyond

this includes 4ever, JimH… and aplenty

LOL

“oh God” it takes a toll and penchant for back to the trenches… pull

Days of OUR Lives is just that… a daily firestorm, whet, intake, of YEARS of probability constant and must be

excuse my soapboxing

what would I do without my Kayla?
The Donovan women: Eve and Theresa?
JJ : the leading man of Horton panache… LOL.. he’s studmuffin
ALL those associated with the Kiriakis ??? Victor, Maggie, Justin, Adrienne, Sonny, Brady

Stefano and Chad !!!! Billy Flynn has been carrying … as i’ve said before… i am engulfed in those eyes… Stefano magic is incomparable

Anne and Maxine are a constant delight

what’s bringing down the show :

go with me on this : who is the one constant… since.. 2013… that has nonplussed the audience alike ? Dr. Dullard Dumb down Jonas ??? with Melanie… gag me

for the audience to not know this… and an uproarious cause celeb if they just got rid of him… would energize and elevate the show by leaps and bounds… ??? why does DAYS production continually drag the show down with him… ??

I was actually surprised that Jennifer Horton ! got on his case.. “I didn’t come here for a lecture” ??? LOL… I prop you for this one scene Jennifer… otherwise.. your no backbone.. dull acting, along with Daniel… has smothered the audience two fold

the writing is so bad… save for the actors who continually bring their A game… and carry the show… through thick and thin

@Jeremy : so many good points… with your post

Days of OUR Lives IS “traditional” : exactly why we all bother to tune in every day of the week… 365 days a year… it’s a valiant turn the writing team must turn the page

I’m so taken with the Paul/Will/Sonny saga with all actors “related” to
I’m so taken with knowing how much Adrienne and Lucas are being featured

where is my Rafealicious
I wish the writing team would bring back Christie Clark, as Carrie… wouldn’t she add so much, in replacing Sami, as the new heroine of Salem… and give Rafe a life of love romance and man

the production of 6 months in advance is budget conscious : and we realize that… are the producers and executive producers doing their job? I’d be watching the dailys … just as it’s called… daily… and keeping the writers abreast

geez!

I don’t know… I laud this soap… of the 4.. because it’s the one of 4 that remains true to the original recipe…

it’s angst time… because… they have hired a new head writing team and producers… are they thinking outside the box… and going past , September, 2016?

I hope

ps: it’s a never ending cycle… and that’s what keeps me glued.. with glaring omission… and trajectory unbecoming…

it’s my show of shows with

give me some Justin, Rafe, T, Paul
machismo with intellect… and FUN like we know them to be… Brady and Eric

Bo and Patch are on the horizon

Michael Muhney should be the new Peter Black

Dont drag GH, in Days mess!!!

can we please stop pretending that Days tapes 5 months in advance out of spite? they do so to save money! simple as that. to stay alive. they have cardboard sets because that’s all they can afford. so unless someone miraculously coughs up money (and nobody seems to feel it’s worth doing that), it’s. not. going. to. happen. deal with it!

@GB – it’s my right like all of us to voice our opinions and concerns, thoughts and ideas on this blog. You can disagree with me, of course. But to tell me to “deal with it”, that is plain rude.
I am not the only one on this blog site to discuss this 4-6 month advance taping who-ha. DAYS is sinking, I hope you’re taking notice of the ratings. And, lots of other fans are finding issue with the advance schedule. DAYS needs to work it out with NBC, and develop new ways to improve before it is cancelled. So, no, I will not “deal with it!” It’s time for change – to save our soap.

The Sonny/Will/Paul triangle is the only interesting story playing out at the moment and even that storyline is a mess because it’s most important character, Will, is played by an actor who can’t act. Guy Wilson is a horrendous actor and it is unforgivable that he has been subjected upon the viewers as along as he has. The producers need to buy out his contract and get him off the the show before he drives away the show’s remaining viewers.

Tad, you’re onto something!

Tad, I’ve been saying this for I don’t know how long-“nuWill” is like nails on a chalkboard! I have to fast forward through his scenes!

The show is so boring which is really sad considering how exciting it was in the 80’s & 90’s. I’m afraid even Eileen’s arcs can’t help if the writing is crap. If it ain’t on the page, it ain’t on the stage!!!

I actually like some of Days current storylines in addition to Sonny/Paul/Will. I feel bad the the strongest part of the story, Sonny, is leaving. Normally that wouldn’t end a show, but Days is barely hanging on as it is!

I really like Aiden & Hope, but they’re rarely on. I feel like he should be in many sl’s right now, esp since he’s dating Hope and he’s a lawyer. Him & Hope are so charismatic together or apart.

I actually like Molly Burnett a lot so I’m bummed she is leaving, too! I don’t really care for her & Brady together, but it’s not the worst pairing ever. That would be Eve&JJ! Make it stop!!!! Not only does this sl need to go away & fast, I think boring, boring Beige Paige needs to go as well. How can you justify her taking JJ back after all of his trysts with her mom? I like the actress, but I can’t look at Eve now w/o thinking how horrible she is. Who do you pair her with? I think she has to go as well.

Always thought Brady & Theresa belonged together. Love the actress & think she should get MORE sl. Also love Nicole. Not sure who’s idea it was to make Nicole a victim and a back-burner character but fix it fast!

Love the actor who plays Chad, though he seems more Paul’s speed than Abbi’s. That boring Ben or whatever his name is this week & his child rapist dad must go!

1 more thing: Please STOP putting Dr. Dan in every storyline!!! He’s obnoxious & a snob! JJ’s life is only as much of his business as he allows it to be. He needs to step back. Next he will be in the elephant sl since the diamonds are in his fireplace. No doubt he’ll probably be right in the middle of Theresa/Brady baby sl. Mark my words!

Not happy we’ve lost Wally Kurth on GH but Days offered him a contract. It seems they are going to bring back some big, past couples which I think is great. So sick of the random hookups on this show.

IT’S LIKE YOU READ MY MIND!!! I have high hopes Xander will bring Nicole back to her former schemer glory, not this half baked victim that she’s become.

I am loving Xander, too! Paul Telfer is a Scottish gem! Way to go DAYS in promoting him from Damon to Xander. Paul is a really terrific actor. Looking forward to his pairing with Nicole and, even Theresa could be a contender!

I hear you about losing Wally Kurth on GH, but I feel like DAYS stepped up, and offered this dynamic actor a contract – which is gold in the soap world. It seems that Wally has been off-contract on both shows for several years. Good for him for sticking with DAYS. I’m grateful we didn’t lose him to the CBS soaps. I look forward to the journey of how Adrienne and Justin will repair their marriage. And, obviously, I’ll miss our beloved Ned on GH, but look, maybe Wally can work out deals like Eileen Davidson has with Y&R & DAYS and he, pop into GH once in a blue moon.

I have never watched DOOL..
but
I have read/seen a great effort to save it..
trying new things and bringing in different peoples, cast etc..
At the least they come across as caring and trying to save DOOL ..

Wish it the best ..

1 more thing is if there’s anyway at all they can film closer in than 5 or 6 months that would be great! Also, if there was a place for fans to voice opinions, like on Days FB page. On GH’s page they do have a place for regular comments. GH used to take polls regarding current sl’s. I’d wish all 4 soaps did it, but Days definitely needs to! Let’s save all of our soaps!!!

I worry though that all it would become is people voicing they want happily ever after for their numerous favourite couples? How boring would that be!!

DAYS is in trouble. It is hard to get through an entire episode. I haven’t watched lately,a complete snoozefest. DAYS is filled with a lot of bad writing right now. I think they waited too long too make a writing change. It won’t be till August till the new material shows up on screen. There’s been little to no promotion of Eileen Davidson’s appearance. I think the 50th is the final chance to save the soap. Renewals up next year. A decision will probably be made on the future of the soap by the end of the year.

“thank you” : why shouldn’t NBC promote a daytime staple

when i first say… “kristen” baby… in the cradle

it stratosphere spotlight and game on

tingle sensation aplomb… YES !

I worry about Days mainly because NBC has had bad PR recently from Olympic Coverage, the Today Show/Ann Curry/ratings, and Brian Williams nighttime news. So you never know what they might do as a clean sweep after the 50th. Wonder how Meredith, Steve Harvey and Ellen who follow are doing?

I watched Days for years, and I’ve seen my share of bad writing, but never have I seen the actors give up- and that is what has changed for me. It looks like everyone is just phoning it in, they sound more bored than I am watching them. I think something has gone down behind the scenes– perhaps they heard the show will not last pass the 50th so they lost heart I don’t know. All I know is a really bad story or dialogue can become bearable if the actor is trying to lemonade out of lemons, but when they stopped caring then why should I? I don’t blame the actors for the state of the show, but when it affects their performance to the point I can see the decline I know the show is in deep trouble. I will watch because I want to support the genre, but if daytime was really solid with a lot of soaps on the air I wouldn’t give this one the time of day anymore.

valid point : when even the actors arent’ turning the page.. of wasted dialogue

hence, my battle cry : with the new headwriting team and producers

is something, on the horizon?

I make time for 2 serials

Days and GH

gosh darned it : Salem’ites aren’t wasting time

yes go DAYS & GH !!! my 2 serials, too.

I enjoy DAYS and it is hardly done. It lacks an immediacy and some recent stories lack drive. I sense powers that be did not know what to do after Sami and EJ’s departures. There is plenty of talent and some good stories and rich history. Let’s drop the six-month lead time and fly off the cuff some, and focus on vets.

Serena does not come across sincere…or interesting! Give JJ And Paige a serious chance….truth and all.
Also Daniel and Jennifer. Have some true blue happiness that won’t blow up in their faces. There’s plenty of that to go around with Eve, Clyde and Kate, Chad, Serena and Eric. Too much weighing on the relationships going south on this soap. I’ve watched it for decades. And still want it to continue for decades more!

Days is such a “downer” show and it has been for a while now. Nobody is ever happy, everybody is always depressed and crying or comforting someone who is crying and sad or angsty or otherwise generally miserable and/or unhappy. I get that there needs to be that type of drama but soaps are supposed to balance that out with lightness, intrigue, fun, excitement, etc. Days is not a fun show to watch right now and that’s why large swaths of viewers are turning away.

I don’t want to watch a show about a bunch of miserable unhappy people and I don’t know why anyone would. I want to watch a show about people striving for something – not always successfully and with plenty of bumps in the road but at least people who get out of bed every day with a purpose beyond just reacting to the next round of misery sure to come their way.

The show is rubbish without Sami and EJ last big bump was when EJ died in Sami’s arms since then nearly every week been low and i never remembered Days demos to below 500,000 in women 18 to 49 for so long its been nearly two months they been stuck in the 400,000’s. This show needs to fire the most the cast and bring back Ali and James, Blake and ED ones that made the show so great in 2013 to watch.

so are you going to pay AS and ED’s salaries, then? there’s a reason why ED jumped at the chance to go on contract at Y&R – because they actually have the money to pay the salary she (rightfully) commands. Days is running on whatever coins they can find under the sofa cushions

Well with days spare change, I most certainly don’t want to see Sami or Ej ever again, they completely wreck the entire show, and so did bring Kristen back..if days were committed to great stories and not just sexing it up to attract viewers, they might have chance to recover. I FF through the entire Will/Sonny/Paul story because for me the only person that is even slightly interesting is Sonny…and yes Will is a joke…the best part of that story is the snark because he is just like Sami…two peas in a pod….Haven’t cared for Sami since before LORD know when, Would much prefer to watch Carrie…

Days needs to adjust the shooting schedule, to adjust what isn’t working. Eve & JJ, Nicole & Daniel and just about everything else, except the Will/Sonny/Paul storyline. It’s fine to change the head writers and staff, but it won’t matter if you won’t see the changes for six months and by that time, NBC has given up on the show and cancelled it.

I think the Will/Sonny/Paul story-line is the most interesting at the moment. I heard the guy playing Sonny is leaving – that’s too bad.

Guy Wilson
Shawn Christian
Melissa Reeves

have to go!

they just suck the life out of Salem

I only agree with you regarding Shawn. Guy is my favorite Will and, is brilliant at his craft. Melissa has her moments, she was on fire when she discovered Eve & JJ in bed. I want to see more of Melissa/Jennifer being active and fierce. Shawn/Daniel needs to go.
For sure! However, with Chloe returning soon, it leads me to believe that Dr. Dan will be around. Ugh.

Patrick:

I enjoy your posts immensely, including other ones in this thread. WHY THERE ARE NO “LIKE” BUTTONS AT THIS SITE I WILL NEVER KNOW…

Guy Wilson: terrible actor. Please, please, Writers, stop making him say “my husband” twice in every episode.

Shawn Cristian: good looks and a decent body can only get you so far. He is featured way too much.

Melissa Reeves: I don’t care for her as a person (self-righteous homophobe). Her character, like Daniel, is also exponentially self-righteous and featured way too much. You can tell a character isn’t popular when most viewers are rooting for Eve to beat the S**T out of Jennifer.

So Daniel and Jennifer do make a perfect match after all! Let’s marry them off and move them out of town STAT!

I’ve have said it before and this information proves it….Whenever Days focuses on the gay storyline, the ratings drop! What further proof due you need? Many Days fans never wanted a gay storyline in the first place. They went ahead and did it anyway and used two main characters from two of the prominent (relative to the show) families to tell the story. That was was the second mistake – to use characters from the main families. Now the audience hates the storyline. You can write and air it, BUT YOU CAN’T MAKE PEOPLE WATCH IT!!!!!!!

Days should have listened to the fans from the get go and avoided the gay storyline. However, I am also aware that NBC has a say so in what goes on in Salem. I have long suspected that NBC was the driving force behind have a gay storyline on Days. If so, the could have forced the storyline on Corday Productions. Regardless of what the true circumstances were, the outcome is clear – the fans don’t like it!

Now, in order to get rid of the gay storyline, you have to get rid of two main characters from two main families….Characters who fans would greatly appreciate and support as straight characters.

It is not lost on me that the powers that be a NBC are doing whatever they want regardless of what the viewers think about it or are willing to watch. So, let them live with the consequences! I am sure their revenue from advertisements will continue to dwindle as long as they keep pushing homosexuality. How long can that network survive with dwindling revenue?

As a side note, I am still waiting to see how the transgender storyline on CBS will affect the ratings over time. I am also interested in seeing whether or not CBS will be as dogmatic in their support of unpopular stories as NBC has been. I don’t even watch primetime TV on the four major networks anymore, with the exception of DWTS… I think I read an article last year in one of the Entertainment trade magazines, that said revenue from advertising was down for the four major networks. I expect that trend to continue as long as they remain crosswise of the viewership.

By the way, all the GLAAD Awards in the world CANNOT make up for the low ratings….Just saying…

Bravo Gmbenet, my thoughts exactly! I have nothing against them having gay characters, but a little bit goes a long way. DAYS has gone way too far in pushing them to the forefront, giving three core families gay sons .. gmab! Now I have to FF through some of John Black’s scenes, and I love him! But I don’t want to listen to the constant gay this, gay that on this show. This IS the main storyline on DAYS, and if you don’t like it, there’s nothing else to hold your interest. JJ, Eve and Paige? Please! Dannifer? Perhaps the “riveting” elephant story. Ugh! NO couples worth rooting for! Yes, Bo and Steve are returning and I’m looking forward to that – 5 months from now!! Meanwhile, I have absolutely no interest and haven’t for months. Too bad they waited so long to hire new writers.

You know what, Gmbenet? Although I disagree with your continued anti-gay prose, you do make a good point, in general, about viewers being hit over the head with certain storylines. I also think that the DOOL gay storyline is given too much importance in the grand scheme of things. And with the far-in-advance taping schedule of DOOL, they are hindered in making changes as quickly as they should. Soaps, as a rule, are best served when they have a good balance, which features a variety of storylines, prominently featuring veterans and sprinkling in the newbees. And when a new actor is not cutting it — Guy Wilson, I’m talking about you — cut your losses and get rid of him.

Well, I guess we all know who and what you and maddiehayes are…SHAME!

can’t speak for gmbenet, but I am a loyal DAYS viewer of 30 years, and it sickens me to see what it has become. Where are the love stories? The weddings? Nothing but sordid triangles and bedhopping. And yeah, I’m not into the gay story. I’d rather see a man and a woman together. I should be ashamed of that. Nowadays it’s not enough to be tolerant of gays. You have to like WATCHING them shower together. Sorry I’m a disappointment to you.

It really odd to me that the people who are constantly on the attack are the people that come unglued if you say you do not like the gay storyline…..I do not hate gays…but I see no need for them to be front and center all the time in Salem…before you get all over people for being Homophobic..try listening to them…I say this to anyone who use the term…..You want acceptance of a certain lifestyle, yet you are completely unwilling to just read past the comments against the story….I don’t want to watch a gay storyline….I happen to agree, Many people are tuning out because of it. If it was an EDICT from Sony to CORDAY…TPTB most certainly screwed up….Nothing more repulsive to me than hearing John Black talking about Paul coming on the Sonny and then later hearing that Paul is John son… I DON’T BELIEVE IT FOR A MINUTE!!! Personally I am happy that Freddie is moving on…I wish him all the best I hope Christopher Sean get offer an BIG FAT lucrative contract on a night time show and DAYS gets over itself with this whole storyline.

I will fight you and call you out on your ideals

Do not want to go down the road of Christians one side LGBT community on another here is my take anytime you aren’t enjoying something quit watching it. That is why I quit watching Y&R I did not enjoy watching characters act like complete aliens. Still hope it will come around but if it doesn’t that’s ok. Now the on thing that has me really depressed is after tomorrow night what am I going to do without Justified gosh no Raylan in his great hat and Levi’s. I am distraught!!!

I think of ratings dips or risings differently. Who cares? Our soaps are iconic; we lost soaps that were terrific. Networks turned away for economic reasons. I urge my soap peers to avoid posting negative comments. Network directors are looking for reasons to save money. Story lines change and eventually viewers will like them better. Lastly remember soap characters are like our friends. We don’t walk away if they are not perfect. Stay with the soaps. Soooo much better than other programming. Stop the virus called negativity.

Uh, you and other fans SHOULD care. Ratings (especially the key 18-49 key female demo) set the ad rates to generate revenue that goes into paying the bills to produce the soaps and keep them going on the air. It’s a business for the networks and that’s the bottom line. Network executives aren’t keeping soaps on the airwaves out of the goodness of their hearts.

And why shouldn’t people express themselves on sites like this if they’re truly not happy with the shows? There’s absolutely nothing wrong with constructive criticism. Are viewers/fans supposed to grin, watch, keep quiet, and accept any kind of garbage from writers, no matter how ridiculous, merely to keep the show on the air? So, every posted comment must be gushing praise or else you’re not a real fan? Really? If that’s how you feel, then you really should do something else with your free time. Just sayin’.

They need to shut down filming for four month so that way they don’t film so far in advance; that’s their downfall and they don’t get the proper time to fix the story. That’s their downfall; they can’t keep filming so far in advance.

DAYS is fixing to come to an end if they don’t do something………….This is worrying me!

The whole problem is simple to solve. Ken Corday needs to be removed! He said in interviews that he wanted the audience mad! And well it worked no one wants to watch a show that makes them mad! They watch it to get away from real life. And who in their right mind hires writers that were fired before the writers that we’re just fired were brought in? I have watched for over 20 years and I’m not surprised one bit by the ratings.

Days is in deep trouble and is probably in a race against time, sad to say. Those are ratings akin to what Guiding Light got circa 2008-09 (perhaps even worse) right before CBS/P&G pulled the plug. Like many have noted, it’s absolutely asinine and antiquated that they have filmed the show at least 4-6 months in advance, and it could end up being the fatal blow. The upcoming 50th anniversary is probably going to be the final chance to try to save the show, as the new writers’ material will be airing by the start of fall. I hope I turn out to be wrong, but I personally think they waited too long to make the change. Sony has made such a mess of this once iconic show, and NBC executives surely can’t be happy. Very sad.

I have been watching the show for many years, but stopped cold turkey a few years back when Dr.Dan, Jennifer, Melanie and newbies started taking over. Now with the Sonny/Paul/John story I am back watching but that is the only thing that keeps me tuned in. The rest of the show is dreadful. I think that’s what’s wrong, they only have one good story and when that is not on the show is awful. I couldn’t sit through both Monday and Tuesday’s episodes. You need to focus on the vets if you want to keep the ratings up. Bring back Shawn and Belle, have your storylines revisit history, bring back fun characters like Calliope and Nancy Wesley, update your sets because they are really ugly and cheap looking. Look at what Prospect Park did for All my children and follow suit. They were on a budget but made the show look great. Bring back Salem Place instead of the cheap looking Horton Square.

I have to respond to your comments concerning the sets. While I find the Days sets much more appealing than those on Y&R, I do feel TPTB could give more characters offices and homes instead of having them constantly discuss their personal business in the park or the town square. And, FYI to TPTB, hospital personnel staff don’t conduct their business at the nursing station. I do have to commend the production staff for one thing. Whenever a scene takes in public, the restaurant, the town square or the hospital, there are always people moving in the background. I like that. It gives the show a full, realistic look like you’ve really come to the town of Salem.

You are so right about Prospect Park. The sets for the online AMC and OLTL looked great.

It would also be nice if ONCE in a while DOOL could film outside, instead of almost every scene taking place in that ridiculous fake-leaf Park.

I love DAYS. And for all the fans who love DAYS, please watch live on TV or same day DVR! Watch consistently every day and you’ll be rewarded…4ever.

Who would want to sit through 1 hour of a unwatchable show.. You must be on Substance 🙂

I have loved and watched Days for years. They have been in storyline slumps before, but this is an all time worst. First, why is Stefano only filmed in a room by himself? Does the actor refuse to film more frequently? Second, why did Alison Sweeney really leave the show? They really need her. Third- why don’t they pair rup Rafe with someone, put him back on the force, and give him a storyline? Also- they need to do something about the JJ and Melanie story. He is interesting but the story has played on too long, it’s kind of grioss that he slept with her mother TWICE, and there never seems to be a dramatic payoff. Plus the actress is SO boring and she cannot act. speaking of which. The gay storyline is interesting, but GuY Wilson is truly terrible to watch. It is a great story but watching him try to act is almost unbearable. I love that they have given Adrienne a story, buy I wish they would do the same for the legendary Deidre Hall. She is the only one on the show with real star power, and they never use her anymore- and every time Will calls the foever youthful Deidre Hall “grandma” I wanna through the hourglass at my television screen. Also, they need to change the baackground music. There is too much of an electronic sound in the music, and it sounds waaay too generic. They also need to look athe production schedule. They may be saving money by shooting five months in advance. However, in the long run it is just not working. The advance filming leaves no opportunity to fix things that are clearly not working. Finally, they desperately need some real storylines with credible drama. They need writers that understand soap opera and the importance of writing arcs and episodes that keep viewers guessing, which in turn compels them to tune in each and every day. I love Days and ai hope Corday can fix this mess before it is too late.

Excellent suggestions, Michael! The head honchos at DOOL would do well to heed your advice!

Ratings started a slow downward spiral shortly after Chandler Massey stopped airing. The downward trend picked up even more after James Scott and Alison Sweeney left. Now as a storyline featuring the worst “actor” (a term I use loosely) Guy WilSon has been front and center the ratings just keep plummeting. When will the producers and management start reading the comments on their face book page and listen to their viewers who used to watch the show and state over and over again that they can’t stomach the non acting of Guy WilSon and do something about recasting Will Horton. What they have is not working, he has been given more than enough time to figure out this role and how to act and he still hasn’t. A main character and a main storyline and it is awful because the actor can’t do the job. The new writers might be able to help but until they get some decent actors to do the stories ratings will just continue to drop.

I could not agree more. Guy Wilson must go, NOW!

Yeah they definitely need to recast Will.

I think DOOL will get a big makeover to save it..
They are trying by bringing in ”new” writers and ideas. new stuff..

CBS.. B&B and Y&R
ABC.. GH
NBC.. will not let their soap go (bad business..

To be clear, I hope that Days finds some way to survive. But why would it be “bad business” for NBC to drop the show if indeed the ratings wind up justifying it and the show simply is not generating enough ad revenue anymore for the network to offset its costs? Simply because NBC would then not have any daytime soaps left? Because they’d be disappointing a loyal but (quite frankly) limited and steadily dwindling audience?

It would be sad if it does happen and I’d certainly feel for those fans/viewers, but TV is a bottom-line business and things evolve and change over time. Nothing lasts forever; that’s just reality. If Days lives on past Sept. 2016, it won’t be because NBC execs decide that simply out of the warmness of their hearts.

Hi Su, I sure hope you are right, that DAYS gets a big makeover. 🙂
They are way over do for big changes to maintain it’s place in the daytime drama arena.

Days of our lives has been difficult to watch for many years . This soap needs a return to romance , emotion . Bring back the favorites : Patch and Kayla , Kim and Shane , Jack and Jen …You need the action , the mystery , the adventure . The show needs to be lively again instead of being so rigid and so often predictable with the stories. The writers need to inspire themselves from shows like The Young and the restless . Days needs to be more like The Young and the restless . It needs that style , that depth , that substance . Use and preservation of the vets on one hand and a few new characters on the other but once again new characters with depth and substance with a complete and well defined sets of dimensions. Needs to tell socially relevant stories too . To put it simply i would say to the writers to please ” Young and restless ” your ” Days of our lives ” .

DAys of our Lives is better than Y&R

nuff said

if the story line is’t working… i focus on the acting
Days has it in spades

writers : get on the stick
a cohesive knit and gel would work wonders

The only thing DAYS should emulate about Y&R is strengthening the African American cast. Y&R is very crappy at times, but does have a solid group of African American characters, which is why the ratings are what they are 40% of of daytime viewers are African American. You must be on some kind of “substance” for saying DAYS needs substance like Y&R…Y&R plays it safe…there is no depth or substance to Y&R!

I started watching Days when I heard Kassie DePaiva was coming. Wow. Even the great Kassie DePaiva couldn’t save that nutso character she has to play. What is wrong with the writers of DOOL ? Almost every female character they portray is either a stalker or sex starved, or just plain unbelievable. Case in point:

Nicole: Since Dr. Dan told her to take it slow, she has constantly called, texted, or showed up at his door. Are you kidding me? A beautiful woman like that has to come across as the most desperate excuse for a woman?

Eve: Really. She spends her whole day either running after her daughter or her daughter’s boyfriend. She needs to get a life and find a man, not a boy.

Melanie: Oh please. How old is she? 12? I could play the drinking game with how many times we are subjected to the cutsie looks. All she needs to do now is start batting her eyelashes.

Jennifer: Another one who needs a life. What mother makes it her life mission to control their children’s love lives????

Theresa: I love Jen Lilly. However, the character she portrays has the lowest self esteem of anyone I have ever seen. That scene where she gazes longingly at Nicole and Xander says it all.

Of course, every character should have some flaws, otherwise they wouldn’t be interesting. But these charaters are at the farthest end of the spectrum.

I can’t blame them. I shut the show off during the lets kill Jack, and stick every women with the doctor Forgot his name . Loved him as Mike on ATWTs but DOOL has sunk with GH.

I have watched Days for years. I am not gay ** do have friends that are. They are great people. Quit showing them in bed together. I will not expose my Grand children to this. This has helped your rating go sown in our area.

THEE polls.. as it were.. are reflecting as much

the younger generations are far more tolerant of my lifestyle than you

and i get that… and appreciate that… as they . .. hopefully will outvote you

But you are ok exposing the grandkiddies when straight unmarrieds roll around panting in bed on your soap? Huh?

Where is your area, Linda? Are gays allowed in your area or do you have to cross a county or state line? When babies are born and turn out to be gay, are they banned from your area? Do the parents go see them or are they banned from their hearts too?

Straights are straight and don’t turn gay. Gays are gay and don’t turn straight. Bi’s are bi and can but don’t always go both ways.

People don’t choose their sexual orientation…whatever is, has already been predetermined.

To whoever replied to this comment, which was not posted in the thread (only in my inbox):

I’m not a liar. I only posted my opinion. Don’t be so damn mean. Now, the truth is, I wish my inbox would show the names of the people leaving me such hate filled messages through Michael Fairman Soaps..?I also wish I knew where you live…I’ll show you I mean business!

It’s very sad. Some of the stories aren’t that good, some of the actors aren’t that good, but it’s not horrible. I don’t like Guy Wilson as Will. I don’t like Paul as John’s son. Why is Rafe relegated to managing a bar? The whole Jordan-Clyde-Ben story and characters are awful. Killing EJ was bad too. Lucas and Adrienne don’t look good together. It just gives me the willies seeing them in bed and together. Maybe because they are long-term characters/actors. I don’t know, but they just don’t match. There are a lot of things that need to be fixed. I hope that they are doing that.

Horrible writing and lack of interesting stories make Days a very BORING soap to watch. I stopped watching when EJAMI left, but started again about 6 weeks ago. It is just AWFUL in my opinion. I stopped watching again and this time for good, unless they being back EJ. The lack of Dimera family has left a HUGE VOID. Chad is NOT the answer, especially alone.

I haven’t watched in weeks-ton of episodes on my DVR that I have no desire to watch. Saddens me; because, two years+ ago-I was an avid watcher when Kristen returned the first time.

Days fans I would not hold my breath at Dena Higley & Josh Griffith turning this around. Dena has written for Days before these are recycled writers. Also why don’t you read about how she did damage to OLTL wrote for them 2004/2007 ask Erika Slezak who God bless her had the love for the show to be honest about it. Daytime needs a breath of fresh air some new blood. Guiding Light’s ratings were 1.7 and they were axed Days are 1.6. . As for the storylines you don’t want grandchildren seeing why are they watching daytime dramas? I have not watched since we had Marlena going around as the Devil. Good Luck to you but I think this is Days Swan Song!!

This is a shame because DAYS is on fiyah right now!! I live in Canada and the show airs a day ahead so I just watched Tuesday’s episode. No soap does emotional fallout better than Days. The writing was sophisticated and emotional and hearkened back to classic soap opera. No gunshots….no violence…no evil twins….just pure melodrama at its finest. And the acting…..Deidre Hall was sublime and understated but so powerful. This show has its groove back and is in fine form as we head towards the 50th.

Yes, I love the melodrama on DAYS. No mobsters – not like Sonny, Julian and others on GH. And, yes, finally we are reminded what an asset Deidre Hall remains to be, thank goodness she is still on the show. She is a true soap gem. You, get the show one day in advance, that is interesting! I wonder why that is in Canada.

Days needs to be Cancelled!!!!!!! Awful Soap Opera, castdont have chemistry together.. One look at it, no interest in this crumble set unwatchable show 🙂

Years ago the entire cast seemed to have chemistry and there was family and great friendships with loads of great advice too. It’s nothing like that anymore. I agree, it needs to go

Wow I haven’t watched days in years I have a friend that is a loyal fan of this show and they did tell me that besides one storyline on the show the rest is not good Just reading these comments I had no idea they filmed 5months in advance wow. Now I’m a huge B&B fan and there scheduling is only like 2months which does give the show enough time to pull the plug on something if it isn’t working which they have done in the past. Yeah I don’t want to speak for other people because this soap is obviously still very important to people but they need to stop filming at least for a few months so they can work out what needs to happen to get the soap back where it should be. Even if I’m not a dedicated viewer of DOOL I still want it to do well there are only 4 soaps left. Y&R , B&B are fine but I have to admit over the last few years I’ve been worried about DOOL & GH I actually thought they might cancel GH at one point so I’m glad they didn’t but DOOL needs to make some changes it would seem

They need to keep exciting characters and stop pushing the bores (Jennifer, Paige, Hope, whatever Hope’s boyfriends’ name is) down our throats! They need to do anything they can to keep Serena and Sonny! The Sonny/Will and Eve/anyone scenes are the best and most exciting. they could do so much with an exciting character like Serena too. It’s time to keep moving and if a character (Jennifer or actress Melissa) isn’t working, change it! I’m ready to stop watching myself!

DAYS has since went up and GH went down.

Have not watched very much in awhile, so not sure of everything that is going on, but ”popped’ in for a short time the other day when I happened to be home – the Hope/Aiden scene was cute (Aiden is adorable), Lucas and Kate were good, Nicole and Daniel had some sizzle, Rafe is so handsome and well suited to run the club, and Victor is always good – he is an anchor. With all of this said, some of the characters and actors can give some good soapy stuff, so it is now up to the writers to give them storylines that make you want to watch. Look forward to the Days 50 celebrations, but concerned they may not be renewed after that is over. Come on Days we are pulling for you to step up to the plate and give us the romance and intrigue that will make us want to watch again.

Days over exposure of the dreary lackluster and constantly popped Daniel while turning it back on characters that had character and the very concept of romantic stories killed ratings as did the producer who disses the super couples

To increase interest in the show, Days could challenge its writers to create the Sonix articles which Will supposedly wrote about Sami, EJ, Chad, and Paul Nurita. Why not? It could be fun. Days could publish the fabulous articles on its website, with supposed permission from Sonix. Since it’s fiction, the articles could be as scandalous as the writers want to make them.

And of course, for heaven’s sake, pay whatever is required to bring Chandler Massey back to the show.

They did publish the articles on the DAYS website.

Shows that got cancelled, like All My Children, One Life to Live, As the World Turns, all had prominent gay storylines towards their end, similar to Days and if this kind of story is a contributing factor to dismal ratings – I am really disappointed because there aren’t strong characters as Bianca Montgomery, Luke Snyder or Will Horton on Australian TV.

What hurts days of our lives is casting changes. It was hard to watch for a while when all the old characters where written off or quit. The new characters have no real ties to salem. I have been watching days for at least 30 years. When the old characters come back they have no storylines or they only make brief appearances. Don’t bring them back for just a month if they don’t have any intentions of staying don’t bring them back at all, as it is disheartening to fans. Or recast their roles. What about Drake the character of John black is half written. Fans were on the edge of their seats waiting to see were he came from and exactly what his ties to stephano were. How many years ago ? Also the story of Ej and Abby and the pregnancy scare. Really odd writing. I mean why bother if their was no story connected to it, or will I be dead before its finshes.

Also, you need to think about the fact that their are not as many house wives as their uses to be. Most family’s have 2 working parents. I have to watch through the abc app. I wish days came on at night. I Don’t want to see my favorite show canceled.

DAYS and ‘Supernatural’ Alum Jensen Ackles Joins the Cast of Justin Hartley’s CBS Series ‘Tracker’

Look who’s joining Justin Hartley’s hit freshman drama, Tracker! None other than another soap alum, former Days of our Lives and Supernatural favorite Jensen Ackles.

In a reveal via Hartley’s Instagram on Thursday, Ackles is set to play Hartley’s on-screen brother on the CBS procedural drama. In Tracker, Colter Shaw is estranged from his brother, Russell, which has been a big part of the mystery of season one.

Ackles is best known for his long run as Dean Winchester in The CW’s Supernatural, a role he reprised in the prequel of the series The Winchesters. He also recently starred in ABC’s Big Sky as Sheriff Beau Arlen and in The Boys as Soldier Boy.

Jensen was the original Eric Brady on Days of our Lives, a role he played from 1997-2000, before departing for the world of primetime and film.  Eric was in love with Nicole played by Arianne Zucker. The part of Eric was recast with Greg Vaughan taking over the role in 2012.

In his Instagram post, Justin thanked everyone for watching Tracker, and then revealed Ackles as the surprise casting announcement in the role of Russell, while Jensen was playing pinball in the video! No word yet on when Jensen’s first episode as Russell will air. Stay tuned.

Wally Kurth Talks on His DAYS Daytime Emmy Nomination, His Emotional Scenes, and Remembering John Aniston

During our 2023 year-end honors at Michael Fairman TV, we named Wally Kurth as our pick for Best Overall Performance by an Actor for his double-turn as both Ned Quartermaine on General Hospital and as Justin Kiriakis on Days of our Lives. So, it was absolutely no surprise to us that Wally landed a Daytime Emmy nomination for his riveting work as a grieving Justin in the Supporting Actor category for the upcoming 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

On DAYS, Justin had been put through the emotional wringer, of first, losing his beloved Uncle Vic, played by the late John Aniston, and then finding out that Victor was the supposed biological father to Justin’s son, Alex (Rob Scott Wilson). If you didn’t reach for the hankies during some of Kurth’s work in these scenes, we don’t know what will make you do so.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Wally to get his reaction to his fourth Daytime Emmy nomination in the last six years. Kurth was nominated in the Supporting category in 2018, 2020 and now 2024 and Lead Actor in 2021.

In addition, Wally shares what scenes were on his nominated reel, how John Aniston impacted his work, how he has changed as an actor over the years with a new outlook, and being the only actor out there with two long-running roles on two long-running soaps, and much more. Here’s what Wally had to share below.

Congratulations on your well-deserved nomination. You decided to submit yourself this year for Emmy contention in both Lead Actor for GH and Supporting Actor at DAYS, correct?

WALLY: I did. I thought the DAYS reel was a little more dramatic, much more emotional. I had thought with the way the judging goes that it might be a little bit more, winnable, if you will. I enjoyed and was proud of my work at General Hospital, so it’s all good. I’m thrilled. It’s always nice to be nominated.

Photo: JPI

What scenes did you ultimately choose for your Supporting Actor reel?

WALLY: I started chronologically, as always, trying to tell a little bit of a story. I actually started with a scene where Justin has to tell Maggie (Suzanne Rogers) that Victor’s (the late John Aniston) plane went down and it was not found. Then, the scene with Bonnie (Judi Evans) where I sort of have to let it all out, and grieve the loss of this man who was practically Justin’s father, but it was his Uncle Vic. We have a little scene talking about Victor, and then there is a short snippet at the funeral where Justin eulogizes Victor. Next, we jump to scene where Justin discovers the letter where Angelica admits that indeed Victor is Alex’s father (Rob Scott Wilson). So then, Justin has to tell Alex, and then I also sort of grieve the fact that I’m no longer his father. Justin basically lost his son. It was very dramatic and very emotional. I was guessing the judges would be like, “Hey! Enough with the crying! Stop, you big baby!” But, they didn’t. They must have thought that it was convincing enough that it felt really truthful at how Justin was upset about these two unfortunate realizations.

You bring up a really good point. I talk to actors all the time about crying on Emmy reels. Sometimes, many feel it might put voters off. But obviously, this time it worked well for you!

WALLY:  What I liked about the crying scenes was that, like in real life, you’re not crying all the time when something bad is happening, right? I think crying happens and it takes you off guard. It happens without you realizing it. These were all moments when Justin was alone, really. Bonnie comes in the room where Justin is just kind of like dealing with it. And then her coming in, opens up Justin and she is there to hold him. I think that often happens in real life. I thought that was correct for the writers to do that, you know, that Justin would break down when he was alone.

Did you feel the pressure of wanting to get these scenes when Victor died and at his memorial, just right due to the enormity to it, and to do justice for John Aniston?

WALLY: I allowed myself to use my heartbreak over John Aniston. I loved him. I just sort of allowed his presence for me in the scenes. It was sweet. It was good for me. I’m just thinking about it now and I feel teary-eyed. John was such a sweet man. He led by example, and he really did teach me how to be a professional actor, and he was a mentor. He never told me anything specific, but he was just John, and in the scenes, this was the time for me tell him how I feel.

Then, you had the heartbreaking scenes with Rob Scott Wilson where Justin tells Alex he is not his father!

WALLY:  I thought that was just really challenging material. As I get older, I just trust the material, and don’t get ahead of myself. I trust myself with the emotion. Just let it happen if it happens. When I first read it, I kind of imagined what it could look like and then you just let it unfold from there.

You’ve got Robert Gossett (Marshall, GH), A Martinez (Nardo, The Bay), Mike Manning (Caleb, The Bay), and Bryton James (Devon, Y&R) all in your category. Robert has won two Daytime Emmys in a row, last year for Supporting Actor and the year before for Guest Performer.

WALLY:  l love Robert. I worked with the character Marshall on General Hospital, and we had so much fun. He’s a great guy and a really good actor. A Martinez is the best guy ever. I have such admiration for him. Whenever I see him, we always really connect and to be in included with him is great. Bryton James, I don’t know, but I know he beat me in this category in 2020. Mike Manning, I didn’t get the opportunity to know when he was at DAYS as he weren’t in scenes together, but I hear good things about him, too.

When you are judging Emmy reels, what do you look for when you’re voting on a performance?

WALLY: That’s a really great question. And because let’s face it, there’s just a lot of terrific talent in daytime. This year, I judged two categories. I don’t just go with, “Okay, who’s crying the most.” I really try to go with the one who’s touches me the most, who surprises me and moves me. And so, if you go with that, you’re probably going in the right direction. I also think that upfront you do need to kind of give them something in the first couple minutes that shows you know what you’re doing and don’t make it too repetitive.

Who did you first tell you were nominated?

WALLY: My manager, Michael Bruno called me. I was in Chicago with my daughters having a late breakfast and I knew the nominations were going to happen around 11 am Chicago time. I didn’t tell my daughters about what was happening, just in case, I didn’t get nominated. So, when Michael called, I went, “Oh, boy!” I told my daughters who were sitting at the table with me. So, they were the first two people that I could tell, and that was really nice.  We had champagne which was really funny because I bought three little glasses of champagne, and as soon as I bought it, we toasted. They said, “We don’t really like champagne.” So, I ended up drinking all three glasses. (Laughs)

What do you think of Eric Martsolf (Brady), your Day Players Band member, and DAYS co-star getting a Lead Actor nomination?

WALLY: I remember, I was like talking to him and I was like, “Eric, are you going to submit yourself?” And he is like, “I don’t know. I don’t really have anything …” And the next thing you know, he’s nominated. I’m like, “Wow! I guess he found something!” (Laughs) I love Eric. I have such respect for him and his gift, and he works really hard. So, I was very happy for him. I’m glad we weren’t in the same category, however.

How many years now have you been playing Justin on DAYS?

WALLY: I started here 37 years ago in 1987. I was there for four years and then I left. Then, 18 years later, Ken Corday (EP, DAYS) invited me back in 2009 and I’ve been on the show now for 15 years. So, I guess a total of 20 years on and off over the last 37 years. Everyone remembers 1987-1991 … those were big, big years for Justin and Adrienne who back then were a supercouple.

Have you determined who you would thank in your acceptance speech if you win this year’s Supporting Actor Daytime Emmy?

WALLY: I feel like this year I kind of have an idea of what I would say. I think I can remember all of that without writing it down. If I had gotten nominated for both shows, I was definitely going to point out and thank the powers-that-be for giving me dual citizenship and how much I appreciate that. I do think that being on both soaps, I will go to my grave believing that it’s made me a better actor. In fact, since I’ve been doing both shows, I’ve been nominated for Daytime Emmys. I’ve become a better actor. I feel like maybe it’s just that I’ve gotten older and wiser, but I feel as though when I go in there to work, I’m really focused and I’m really prepared. I know I pretty much get one shot to get it. We’re in the business of “one takes” now in the soaps.

People are so lucky to even have one enduring role in their careers, but you’ve been able to have two, and they’re completely separate characters on two legacy shows; one which just turned 61, General Hospital, and the other Days of our Lives which will soon celebrate 60 years, as well.

WALLY: I didn’t plan on it. I must have done something right. Back in 2009, Ken called me up and invited me back to DAYS. I really jumped in. I’d been out of work for four or five years. I went back with a whole new attitude about the work, about the genre.  In 2004, when I left General Hospital, I was kind of burnt out. Looking back on it, I didn’t have a good attitude and I was just done. I was kind of tired. New writers come in and sometimes, when you have new writers that look at your character differently, it can be very difficult, because you just know that their passion is not with your character. However, in this case, I’m like, “I’m going to take whatever the writers give me and do the best I can and do my job. Let the writers do their job.” I think the writers also know that I really respect them and I’m not going to complain. I’m not going to tell them what to do and I’m going to stay out of it. They have enough to work out. They have enough to do. I’m going to be the problem solver, not the problem creator. There are enough problem creators. Believe me when I tell you that every time I leave those sets, I’m like, “Thank you. I love it.  See you the next time I see you.” I know how lucky I am to do both shows and to have this opportunity to act at my age and still be sent scripts. I love the art of acting. I’d do it for free. The fact that they’re paying me and I am able to do this and work with these great, wonderful, talented actors every day, it’s kind of mind-blowing.

Lisa Rinna Would Be Down to Reprise Her Role of Taylor McBride in ‘Melrose Place’ Reboot

When Lisa Rinna departed her popular role of Billie Reed on Days of our Lives back in 1995, her next major role would be a jump to primetime and the soapy Melrose Place.

In 1996, Lisa was introduced as new character Taylor McBride and stayed with the Fox young adult sudser for three seasons. Now in 2024, with the recent reveal that a Melrose Place revival is the works with Heather Locklear, Daphne Zuniga and Laura Leighton all on board to reprise their signature roles, would Rinna board the project should it come to fruition?

Speaking with PEOPLE, Rinna expressed, “Well, gosh, I’ve heard about it. I haven’t been approached or anything, but I would love to see what Taylor McBride is up to 25 years later. Wouldn’t that be something?”

OG Melrose Place fans know that in story, Taylor moved to the Melrose Place apartment building with her husband Kyle played by Rob Estes. However, Taylor had her eye on Dr. Peter Burns played by former GH star Jack Wagner (ex-Frisco). But, by the time she had moved to the apartment complex, Peter had married tough as nails ad executive, Amanda Woodward, played by Heather Locklear.

Recalling her time on Melrose Place, Rinna added that it, “was one of my greatest and most fun acting experiences, playing Taylor and working with Heather and the whole crew.”  Rinna also noted, “So if they need a Taylor McBride appearance, they know who to call. I’m around.”

The new Melrose Place is in development at CBS Studios. In the premise of the reboot, the Melrose Place residents reunite after the death of one of their friends, “but the pressure cooker of a reunion soon uncovers old traumas, rekindles old romances, reignites old resentments, and reveals new secrets… throwing our characters into chaotic drama that’s reminiscent of the past, but with a much more modern perspective.”

So, would you want to see Lisa Rinna reprise her Melrose Place role as Taylor McBride? Comment below.
