RATINGS: GH Hits New Lows with "The Revolution" as its lead-in!

So just how was the first week post-One Life to Live for the four remaining soaps? Well three of the soaps went up and one drastically went down! And the one that went way down was General Hospital! Looks like with a big assist from OLTL’s tanking replacement The Revolution now being the lead-in series before GH, people were tuning out! Couple that, with fans dislike of most of the current stories on the GH canvas, and the once mighty soap of the ABC Daytime line-up lost -348,000 viewers with total household average of only 2,209,000 for the ratings week of January 16-20, 2012.

The Young and the Restless however boosted its overall eyeballs to over 5,061,000 and was up +274,000 viewers expanding its top spot in daytime programming.   Could the “Who killed Diane?” conclusion ( Nikki did it) finally have made fans tune-in for the resolution, along with Sharon voting Victor’s proxy?

The Bold and the Beautiful also had another good week!  The show was up +137,000 as Liam,  Steffy, Katie and Bill Spencer drama picked up!   Days of our Lives was also in the positive after losing viewers the following week.

ABC really needs Ron Carlivati and Frank Valentini’s new episodes to hit the airs, STAT to help GH, if the the network is going to continue with The Revolution, and to reconfigure some of the storytelling in Port Charles.   As for the other soaps, they probably partially benefited from OLTL being gone from the day-part.  Only time will tell, if One Life’s soap fans, will stick (or turn) to other soaps in its place, or just not watch any of the other shows, altogether.     Of course, it would be best for the genre as a whole, if fans tuned in so there is a future!

You can view the entire ratings via Soap Opera Network here.

Let’s be fair………..GH got good this week! Give the ratings a chance!

Ratings depend on viewers, and these ratings are evidence GH was boosted by the lead in of OLTL and its viewers. Without OLTL the situation for GH is even more precarious. GH needs OLTL viewers–and hence some OLTL characters–if it hopes to survive.

But given the planned, brief appearances of some OLTL characters and the absence of others, it’s a strategy with the potential to backfire. OLTL viewers will be alienated by their characters treated as temporary bait to lure them to GH, and GH viewers resent the importation of OLTL characters–both of which have the potential to drive GH ratings even lower. So GH viewers bashing OLTL characters may want to think again before ultimately torpedoing their own ship.

There is one thing that the ratings book fail to include, the people who stoped recording the time slot of OLTL. I relate this to personal experience, where my wife has stopped the time slot of OLTL, but continues to record GH to watch at night when she gets home from work.
I, however, wonder if that because that the recording starts 3 minutes early for GH and starts at the very end of the Revolution if actually ads to the viewer numbers?
Also, they may seeking a general demographic of Women, there are a lot of men who also watch. I for one, a 52 yr old wm, has been watching OLTL for the past ten years with my wife at the supper table. Now, without OLTL we tune into FOX NEWS, so sorry ABC, nightly news on your channel is just as unbearable as the Chew, Revolution and the View.
Television was intended for entainment, not to guilt people. The revolution and chew preach self improvement, either better eating or excersise, there is plenty of channels for this stuf. ie the Food Network, The Style Network and there are plenty of other for specialty TV, by the way Ty, there is also HGTV?
When people want an escape from the worries of the day there has been the cities of Lanview and Portcharles to live vicariouly through the on screen drama of people that we have known for years. The cancellation of OLTL, basically cancelled the escape that Landview provided for millions of view everyday.
Believe or not, there lots of people anxiously awaiting for the OLTL cast to appear on GH, not because they want to get involved with the GH story line, but they miss them in their life. It like waiting on loved one to come home from and extended stay away.
ABC has cut more than 40 percent of it female viewer, it has lost the dedicated followers of the story of OLTL male and female. The resintment runs deep and these people will never tune into any offering made by ABC to replace OLTL.
The executives at ABC are looking at the numbers are making excuses to keep on the reveloution, and they are running out excuses not to give Agnes Nixon her rights back to her story. ABC Disney is living out it’s own fairytale demise right in front of their own eyes.

I think abc is just trying to end the soaps all together. I hate ABC anyways sences they ended one life to live. Down with ABC’

We just want OLTL BACK!! If any soap was going to be kept on the air on ABC, it should have been OLTL. GH’s mob stories are SO overdone and Uninteresting. GH is just not as good as OL was. Maybe Ron and Frank can save it but nothing will be the same with OLTL gone.

I totally agree…bring OLTL back! Nothing else matters but my show!!

Get tired of Sonny & his mob connections!!!!!!!John McBain to the rescue!!! Need to do something frsh & new!!! GH neeeds to change it’s story line because it is in a rut!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes somthing fresh , starting with the OLTL crew joining GH in Feb…… Get away from Sonny’s mob connections.. Maybe he should go straight once and for all.. This has been going on too long!!1 Time for a change in the stories for GH………….

I agree OLTL needs to live on! If ratings were the true way they decided to cancel shows OL should still be om air. Thru no fault of Cast/Crew GH has slowly become the worst what a waste of talent on all three shows!

COME ON PEOPLE WE HAVE TO SAVE GH TO ITS NOT FAIR TO TRY TO SAVE 2 BUT NOT THE OTHER ONE COME ON JUST BCAUSE THEY CHANGED THE SCRIPT IT DOESNT MEAN ANYTHING ITS STILL OUR SOAPS SO FIGHT FOR IT

I can’t see myself starting to watch GH at night, when, more than likely, it will be cancelled because ABCD only want’s cheap programming. It will be very hard to start watching GH….haven’t watched it in 15 years, when it revolved mostly around the hospital. I wish all GH fans luck in keeping it on the air. You all don’t want to feel so devastated like us OLTL & AMC fans feel.

I have come across comments like this on all social media. The SOS movement was to save the genre of soaps, not just AMC and OLTL. Therefore, all the work that has been done has included support of GH. However, in all fairness, taking into consideration ratings, production cost, quality of writing, and quality of acting, the GH of today cannot hold a candle to the past year of OLTL. AMC and OLTL appear to both be “gone”. To work for nine months on “saving a genre” only to have the weakest link still standing is difficult to accept and hard to understand. OLTL continues to be the most viable of the ABC soaps, even though it’s no longer airing. Fans have been trying to support GH. However, it’s hard to be passionate when you know in your heart that the stronger show was terminated to make room for the show that should have been the first to go.

Very nice summary of how many OLTL fans feel and the dilemma for GH. It doesn’t look good, and given the pattern of corporate behavior by ABC, it’s not likely to have a positive outcome. It’s unclear if the potential cancellation of The Revolution will help GH or if the death spiral of The Revolution will drag down GH with it. Either outcome is of little solace to OLTL fans. The best hope for both OLTL and GH viewers is the incorporation of some OLTL characters into GH, and that means each group has to tolerate the other or we end up with nothing.

I knew it ,because we have abc off when the revolution is on ,general hospital is paying the price .thats why I do not believe the way they do the ratings system, and 1loveabcsoaps and heather will get mad at me but Im saying it again, the wrong soap was cancelled, brain frons was fired because he did not do his homework,he didnt check the 49 and over people the people who tapped it and soapnet.I watched it at 3 every day I started at noon on abc with the local news and stayed till the end of general hospital,so that counts ,ok heres a question is there a little man or woman who lives inside our televisions and they know how old we are?if you ask me the way they do the ratings its wrong ,I heard somewhere that its the older people who watch the most tv ,I could be wrong ,should look into that someday another question,I got the farewell issue of one life to live (SOAP OPERA DIGEST) is there another one coming out?anyway something should be done about the rading system because it sucks and its not truthful, and because of that all my children but mostly one life to live was canceled and that has got to be the dumbest thing any television network has done, abc you have to have alot of stupid people working for you, there was nothing wrong with the soaps all you wanted to do was go cheep ,you could have saved one life to live and you chose not to ,have you any idea how boring your afternoon lineup is,you should watch it sometime,I bet you cant sit through it either.

Have stopped watching any shows on ABC during the afternoon hours. This I will continue and no matter how long it takes, I will not be trained to ever watch replacement shows… There are many other options than ABC… If Ratings mean anything to ABC… OLTL should be brought back!!!!

So very correct, Dede, OLTL was the highest rated ABCD soap. GH should have been cancelled instead. NO ABCD on my TV anytime, except for DH and that is ending soon. ABCD will soon be a “formally” watched channel for millions!!

I never thought in my wild dreams that i will ever watch any other soap other than amc&oltl , they.have been part of my life for 32 years.i for one thought to my self i need to support these other stories .so those other shows & fans will never have to experience the pain that i feel. .i started watching nbc &cbs since may .i do like the shows but my favorites will always be amc&oltl .

For me… ABC is out. off my TV. I’m angry and feel with the shows i do watch on ABC (Revenge) showing repeats does not help at all. ABC GO FLY A KITE!

People are probably tuning out of GH because why watch something that might be leaving like screw the chew&revolt the revolution

Sorry, but I do not know how the ratings work. If I tune in at 9:00 p.m. to the SoapNet to watch GH, I’m assuming that I am not included in the daily ratings. Then also what about those that DVR the show to watch later? Are either of these included in the daily ratings?

MRM-H, the ratings are only counted if you have a nielsen box in your house. If you do, and you are over 49 years old, your watching doesn’t count, which is ridiclous. The only consider what 18-49 year olds watch, which hurts the soaps. Also, anyone who records the shows are not counted. People who work and then watch the shows later are not counted as viewers, unfortunately.

People are boycotting General Hospital because they find the stories boring and when ABC decide to cancel GH, that ‘s when everybody will go back watching it, thinking this will undo the cancellation. That’s exactly what happened to One Life to Live.

I think this is big mistake from soap fans to walk away from GH. They should learned at what happened to OLTL and not repeat the same mistake on GH. As bad as GH may be at times, it still has a lot of good points. People should continue to support GH no matter what. GH will come around. But if you wait for ABC to cancel it, it will be too late.

Why should I start watching GH when I have never been a fan of the show in the last 3 years? I will tune in to see Todd and Blair and then tune out when they leave. Clearly the wrong soap was let go and now to have some fans of the GH show be angry that our faves are coming to their show makes me mad. Well it is the only way I will tune in to see my characters. Then hell with them.

I would love to be informed of The Revolution’s numbers…. Please let us know how much it’s tanking. It’s the only bright spot in all of this mess.

What no one seems to mention is that soap viewers aren’t the type who just switch to another soap after theirs is cancelled. I watched OLTL for over 40 years and lived thru all the back story. I have no desire to switch over to any other soap where I have no idea who any of the characters are nor their backstory. It just isn’t of interest to me. So no, I won’t be switching to any other soap. I am now someone who has no particular interest in any daytime programming. The mediocre offerings supplied by ABC Daytime can be viewed on any random cable channel. No thank you.

ok just got back from soaps in depth ,the newbes at general house got there walking papers that girl at windemeir gone, how boring was that story?that is the first thing I said to do and it looks like it is happening, see ,theres room for a few landview people ,anyway things are happening in port charles ron and frank are cleaning house I cant wait to see what will happen.Im so looking forward to this.its not one life to live ,I want that most of all ,but I love general hospital to and I want it saved.

ABC is slick. I dont like alot of GH characters , Gangster thing is okay but i’ve always watched OLTL more.

You MUST Watch GH Live on ABC or DVR THAT Airing & WATCH that same day. Please get everyone you know to Watch GH! We need Ratings..

This is no joke. We can not loose yet another show. Yes abc screwed up BIG TIME, no doubt about it. But we have to help save GH. Do I think a decision has already been made? Probably. But I will do my best to help keep the last of my shows on the air. I know alot of people are turned off by the mob stories on GH and thought that Garin W. would work some magic. Well we know now he didn’t. But there is a new crew in charge and we are all aware of the quality Frank V. and Ron C. put out each and every day. So I say if you have been turned off by GH lately come back and support Frank, Ron and the cast who we all know so well. We do not want to have to endure yet another loss.

OLTL was the lighter funnier more classic romantic soap and GH has been very dark and depressing this past year or more. That is why the ratings were up. The destruction of the Luke and Laura romance turned me off as well. OLTL kept true to their romantic couples such as John and Natalie, Bo and Nora, Clint and Vicki, Gigi and Rex, Tea and Victor , Tea and Todd and I was looking forward to Neela and Jack, and Vimal and Rama. Notice how many couples???? GH is plot driven (mob driven) and OLTL was character driven and I for one prefer character driven stories. I will watch GH until the end and hope beyond hope that they will be able to bring some of our beloved OLTL folks to the canvas-especially Malissa Archer’s Natalie… we waited 8 years for some happy Jolie moments and got one amazingly acted day. Thanks Michael and Malissa you brought your best in every scene it was stellar!!! Thank you cast and crew of OLTL I was always grateful to watch everyday and was rarely disappointed you are the best and will always be my favorite show your loss is sorely felt and obviously the rating demonstate that.

I could not agree more Terri. OLTL had the best couples! It such a good, balanced show. Just about every day you had laughter & tears! I love John & Natalie, I have ALWAYS been a huge Natalie fan. I am watching (forcing myself most days) GH, trying to be supportive of it & hoping it will improve soon. But I am afraid it will get really good then we’ll lose it too. I miss OLTL more than I can say-every day at 1:00 I feel so sad & empty.

Maybe the boycott is working. Down with abc, and long live ONE LIFE TO LIVE.

I think it’s disgusting the way some OLTL fans are practically gloating over the fact that GH isn’t doing well. Did we GH fans gloat when your show got canceled? Absolutely not. I totally understand you’re upset that ABC canceled your show. I would be upset too. But be mad at ABC, don’t take it out on GH and its fans. We didn’t cancel your show.

I have watched AMC, OLTL, & GH for many years. Since AMC & OLTL are gone The only show, and I do mean ONLY, that I watch on ABC is GH. All Soap Fans have to keep sticking together NOW MORE THAN EVER! Yes, the mob stories on GH have become very predictable and uninteresting. But what about Robin & Patrick and all that’s going to be happening with her leaving the show? I’m so happy to hear that Tristan Rogers (always loved him) Finoula Hughes and Emma Samms are returning! The multitude of story lines with them on the canvass will be great. Then when you add in Blair, Todd, Starr and John McBain from OLTL, well I’m sure we are going to love what comes next. With Ron Carlivati & Frank Valentini overseeing the storylines, they will help turn things around. I really think that if the ratings for the “Revulsion” continue to be down, even if they plan to have a show with Katie Couric (which I’ll never watch) they can use her show to replace it but keep GH. We’ve got to keep watching GH! If we don’t then the Soap Opera genre will definitely be a “thing of the past”! What really gets me so angry is we had a new story every day, 5 days a week with the finest casts and crews on our cancelled shows. They had loyal fans and people that were buying the products advertised but that wasn’t good enough! Now I’ve heard that this week three of their “top rated shows” Revenge, Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice were already re-runs! I wouldn’t know because I don’t watch them anymore. It’s a little early to be repeating shows. So this is yet another example of ABCD’s lack of consideration for their viewers!

I used to record OLTL, then watch it in the evening. My DVR is empty now. I am trying to boycott the companies who sponsored the ABC soaps. I no longer shop at Penneys, buy Maybelline cosmetics, etc. I know there isn’t a genre fan general boycott of these sponsors, but there should be.

ABC made a big mistake!! The other networks will laugh at them during Feb Sweeps.
Wake up ABC and give the soaps back to Agnes Nixon. If you want out of the soap business so be it but don’t expect us soapers to watch the replacement shows.
The Spew will get lower ratings too.

Please waych GH!!! We want to keep GH on the air for as long as we can!

Don’t watch the Chew and Revulsion… but tune in to GH!

Ive been trying to watch GH ever since I heard about the Mannings from OLTL joining the show. It isnt the Revolution thats the problem, its the dreadful writing and stories on this show. People may complain but having the producer and writer from OLTL is going to be the test as to wether or not GH will survive.

If you think ABC cares what soap fans think one way are the other. Then you people live in a dream world. They spit in our face while they were laughing at us. I watch GH, but I don’t care for the story line. I mostly listen to it. But hardly watch it any more. I miss AMC and OLTL. Dirty shame they are gone.

It is hysterical that ABC is getting out of the soap opera buisness to put on shows that the fans want… and the shows are flopping. ABC if you have eyes and ears you would know the fans want their long running and loved soaps back ASAP. The people in charge are making big money for such poor decision making. Recycling Bachelorettes that accepted a proposal on national television, having no names helping us cook, having a construction guy help you lose weight and someone who doesn’t have sex help you dress sexy. Really???? Do you think people are dumb. What a mess!!! By the way since Disney is struggling so to keep your Disne brats out of trouble why would we want our kids watching your shows on a 24 hour teen disney channel??? Holy teledo, fire these jerks and bring back the ABC we loved!!!!

Michael
GH as a whole STINKS right now. Their ratings were in the toilet long before the Revulsion took over OLTL’s spot. It’s a shame. I can say that as much as I want to watch GH when OLTL characters come over, I will only watch if Melissa Archer is brought in as Natalie. I just can’t bear to know what RC has planned for my fave couple Jolie when Michael Easton joins the canvas.
Let’s face it, GH needs OLTL. Otherwise the next step is cancellation. What a sad shame that ABC cancelled their highest rated soap for this MESS.
In short, BRING BACK OLTL. Otherwise these ratings are going to continue to fall..

In my stomach I had this gut, feeling all along that the soaps. Would be done on every channel, because of the ratings and, how the crew was writing. I knew that All my children would have been cancelled anyways. Because of how they wrote the stories, and moving it out west. I NEVER WOULD THOUGHT, THEY WOULD EVER IN THE WORLD. TO CANCEL. ONE LIFE TO LIVE. That was BEST BEST BEST BEST, SOAP EVER. It was the classic tale, of a family that we could relate to. And General Hospital is the same, but it was a dark classic about the mob. And now it has gotten to the point, the mob stories has been to much. And they should need to, take control of how the stories would be. Cause before they were, turning this soap, all black in the dark. meaning All black in the dark: Too much of they, didn’t want to make a soap into.

In all fairness to The Revolution, it is not responsible for the decline of General Hospital. General Hospital has aired for almost 50 years on ABC at 3:00pm. If people really wanted to watch General Hospital, they would skip The Revolution and tune in to ABC at 3:00pm. But how can they when Sonny takes 50% of the airwaves for himself and the other 50% goes to the rest of the actors?

Tristan Riggs is General Hospital’s New Aiden

Looks like there is another new actor in the younger set on General Hospital. Tristan Riggs is taking over the role of Elizabeth Webber’s (Rebecca Herbst) son, Aiden.

Previously, Enzo De Angelis played the part of Liz and Lucky’s (formerly Jonathan Jackson) son since 2021. Soap Opera Digest confirmed that Riggs is now firmly in the part.

The switch happened on today’s Thursday May 2nd episode in scenes. Recently, Aiden came out as gay to him mom after admitting his interest in one of his classmates.

Photo: ABC

As Riggs begins in the part, it looks like Aiden is being bullied at school. Elizabeth is trying to get to the bottom of things and made an appointment with school counselors to find out what’s going on, after seeing his book bag had pink paint on it.

Riggs has been acting since he was 7-year-0ld and has appeared on the TV series Walker, True Lies and Best Foot Forward to name a few.

So, what do you think of Tristan Riggs as the new Aiden? Do you hope Aiden’s story becomes more front and center? Comment below.

Juliet Donenfeld is the Temporary Recast as General Hospital’s Georgie

Those who saw the GH preview for today’s May 2nd episode were a bit confused when they saw a young actress sitting with Lois (Rena Sofer) and Violet (Jophielle Love). As it turns out, that young girl is a recast Georgie.

Juliet Donenfeld is stepping into the role temporarily replacing Lily Fisher. As viewers know, Georgie is the young daughter of Maxie (Kirsten Storms) and Spinelli (Bradford Anderson) named after Maxie’s sister, Georgie who passed away.

According to Soap Opera News, Fisher will be back soon in the part.

As for Donenfeld’s credits, she has appeared as JJ in the Netflix’s WWE series The Big Show Show,  Better Call Saul, Good Girls, Station 19, and Sydney to the Max to name but a few.

In addition, Juliet became the youngest nominee for an Annie Award, gaining recognition for voicing the character of Sally Squirrel in the Animated TV/Broadcast Production of Pete the Cat.

Watch today’s GH teaser below, and let us know your thoughts about Juliet as a recast Georgie via the comment section below.

“Daytime television invites viewers into the private lives of characters, often bringing important issues like cancer screenings into living rooms and around water coolers. Soaps debuted the first cancer storyline in 1962 – years before the topic was discussed in the mainstream, and it left an indelible impact: a whole generation of women who scheduled a potentially life-saving Pap smear for the first time,” said Daytime Stands Up host Alan Locher. “For so many viewers, this brought the issue front and center,” added co-host Michael Fairman. “Today, it’s become almost impossible to avoid; but there is hope with cancer research, thanks to organizations like Stand Up To Cancer.”

SU2C Co-Founder Sue Schwartz, SU2C President and CEO Julian Adams, Ph.D., and SU2C Health Equity Committee Member Elizabeth Jaffee, M.D., will also participate to speak to the importance of early detection, exciting scientific breakthroughs, and the ongoing work yet to be done to make screenings and treatment equitable for all.

“This year, an estimated 2 million people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer, presenting an opportunity for the public to stand with us and rise to the occasion,” said Adams. “We’re thankful to Alan Locher, Michael Fairman and our friends from the daytime television community, who will raise critical funding to honor those we’ve lost – and to propel new scientific breakthroughs for current and future patients. Everyone has a story, and we’re grateful to all of you for sharing yours.”

For over 15 years, SU2C has leveraged its relationship with the entertainment community – which includes more than 1,100 celebrity ambassadors – to generate public donations, increase awareness and fund cutting-edge cancer research. SU2C research has contributed to the development of more than 10 scientific breakthroughs that have significantly impacted the field and provided new treatment options for breast, colorectal, lung, melanoma, pancreatic, pediatric and prostate cancers.
