RATINGS: Happy DAYS Are Here Again! NBC Soap Rebounds Post-Olympics!

By Michael Fairman

Published

on

Look like the masterminds at NBC and Days of our Lives efforts paid off, with the DAYSaster to carry viewers through the two weeks while NBC’s coverage of the Summer Olympics in London took center stage.   While many lives in Salem hung in the balance during the gold medal break, upon the return of the series some characters were “killed-off”, and there was some key returns!  All in all, it gave DAYS some of it’s best ratings in quite some time!

When breaking down the numbers, DAYS gained + 218,000 total viewers and it is firmly in third place of the four daytime soaps with almost 2.7 million viewers for the rating period of August 13-17th.  DAYS also saw gains in every key demo and rating share for the week as well.  An NBC press release also touted the gains by stating, “DAYS equaled the show’s highest women 18-49 and women 18-34 ratings since the week of November 21-25, 2011.”

The show with the next biggest gains for the week was General Hospital! The series which is becoming can’t miss TV at this moment with its umbrella stories, gained + 147,000 in the total viewers category.   The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful held firmly onto the number one and two spot, even though both shows lost some viewers for the week.

Overall though, the soaps had a very good week August 13-17th.  Now if the series  can stick with  stories they are dishing out that are resonating with the fans, perhaps we can increase some more viewership!  View the entire ratings courtesy of Soap Opera Network here.

Alright soapers, time to play Soap Opera Programming Executive Armchair Quarterback!  Tell us:  What is working on your favorite soaps right now?  What isn’t?  What changes would you make?  What characters are you clamoring to see more of? less of?  Weigh-in!

I loved the DAYSaster, even though it meant the departure of Matthew Ashford. I always liked Jack…well, once he got over his creepy faze with Kayla back in the day.
I wish there was more balance of character air time though. Too much EJ/Sami/Will, not enough John and Marlena. I hope that now that Stefano is back and Kristen is coming it won’t become even more of The Days of DiMera’s Lives (unless of course, John is the DiMera that gets that air time). Hey, I know EJ/Sami have a huge fan base, I’m just saying I wish there was more balance!

James Scott and Ali Sweeney are captivating as EJ and Samantha explore their enduring love absent the standard baggage. They are a super couple for the new millennium if only the powers that be tell their story. If it turns into yet another retread triangle, I may tune out again. Write smart, write compelling, write nuanced characters of depth, and smart women and sought after demographics will watch. Look at the success of rom coms, romance novels, and 50 Shades. An audience is there for Days if they can move beyond their 1980s formula. That was my Jr High Days. Time to be my grown up Days now.

I agree with your comment. James and Alison are just soooooooo good to watch and I love them to bits. SAFE and EJOLE really pulled down the ratings and were sooo boring I literally pulled my hair out. However, I am worried as Gary Tomlin lusts after Galen Gering for whatever reason and seem to already want SAFE back together. If that happens Sami and Rafe should move to Stepford.

They spiked in November and they spiked during the heavily featured EJ and Sami.

Do the math at what fans want to see.

i always liked Jack too. I hope they give Lucas a good story. Not really a big John fan, but I like soaps that balance the vets into the mix.

I hate EJami. I think its high time they were done with and the older characters, as well a snew ones, would be on more. I’m tired of the “Days of Sami’s Love Life” being on everyday.

I love EJAMI and hate EJOLE and boring old SAFE, but I do agree with you that the show is all about Sami’s love life.

While I am an EJole and Safe fan, I also enjoy Lumi, do to the heat they bring. I think EJole has heat, but Safe needs some spice in their relationship.

I dont like Ejole at all but your right SAFE lacks spice.

Ejole is just pathetic Safe is just boring..two ‘qualities’ which don’t lead me to watch a tv show..

I’m thrilled that the ratings were so high last week after Days was off due to the Olympics. I’m enjoying the EJami story & scenes. The last time the demos were moved 8 months ago was heavy EJami scenes. I can’t wait to see their story. It’s time they finally were given a chance to be together with no obstacles coming between them. Ali Sweeney & James Scott are doing an outstanding job with this story. Their chemistry is so strong, natural & hot they do
their best work with each other.

GO EJAMI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They melt my screen and seem so suited with each other. Its about time they were given a chance to shine and become a supercouple.

I have been watching days a bit since the reboot. My biggest complaint is it moves so slow it somehow feels like its still in the seventies (never watched back then-strictly an ABC soaper. I’m trying to fill the void that the rat gave us.

What I love right now is GH. Cartini has saved the show IMO. I can’t wait to see the surprise on Monday. I am loving Todd, McBain, Luke & Anna. Hell I’m loving everything about it right now. I hope we will see more OLTL peeps & would love an AMC person or 2 thrown in the mix (paging Dr. David Hayward).

I think ABC is trying to lure us back & they know the only way to have better ratings is to try & change our opinion about them being evil rat bastards. I really think at this point it would be impossible for our shows to come back so I appreciate it every time Frank throws us a bone. Not enough however to start watching the alphabet network. Except GH, of course.

Great news for GH gained more viewers +147,000 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Writers from ex-OLTL ….KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found the whole thing kind of a let down. The last fifteen mintues before the Olympics was a thinly blocked set of scenes to set up who went where and why before the explisions. Two weeks later, Sami is hanging in peril above spilt water and sparking electrical cords. The poor girl, we’re to assume, could have been electrocuted had she fallen. In comes Will, who’s able toa ssess the situation in two seconds and help pull his mother to safety. A few scenes later all are acting and moving about as if all the water and electrical danger was cleaned up….Then there was Ian suddenly acting like a bad mad Shakespearean actor lamenting the dearly departed Madison as the only woman he ever loved while Kate’s heart was ripped out. It all seemed rather forced….And why were Maggie, Victor, Julie and Doug even brought to the gala? We never saw them after the explosion; just Bo or Hope mentioning they got out….The fire and EMT’s were allowing more people to sit or walk around the place the second day after the show returned, then the first. Eeryone that could, would have been moved out of that building asap and not allowed to walk in and out at will. Silly….And for as ripped up as Salem is supposed to be after the ecplosion, it seems it only knocked over one or two bushes in the town square….That being said, I thought having the elevator cable snap was dramatic, but the pulling open of the elevator doors and blocking given to the actors was very weak. If Jennifer was horrifed by her husband dropping to his death, you could have fooled me. She acted more like, “Gee, I think I move here, frown there, sigh and hug someone over there. Am I done yet?”…Jack used to be an important character to DAYS. Having a few people hug the daylights out of Jen and Abigail and say they’re sorry for their lost eighty times a show before shipping them out of town is not paying tribute to the character. I think DAYS had a lot of potential to drag out the peril the characters could have been in for a few more shows and played a lot more of the beats. It all seemed rather plastic and rushed to me. That JMHO.

That’s because Days of our Lives is the perfect soap opera. It’s current, relateable and realistic while maintaining some of the old-school dramas. I hope the ratings keep going up, the show has been amazing in its September 2011 recharge, aside from that horrirfic Alamania storyline.

The Will… coming out… coming of age… coming in to his own…. ala Marlena… was truly what kept DAYS afloat IMO… and catapulted DAYS fans interest. The Gabi/Will story angle… was so unneccessary….. I just can’t see that happening… however… I do like the angst of “gay” bashing…. and knowing how to deal with that…. Geez.. this is quick…post… have to say something… Will and Sonny are a winsome twosome….

The Daysaster was amazing. Really enjoyed Days last week. The key is can Days keep those ratings.

General Hospital is the best soap right now. I can’t believe they turned it around. On Days I love the chemistry of Ejami and I can’t believe the writers have never taken advantage of the chemistry between Alison Sweeney and James Scott. Last week was great. This week the new/old writers have put us to sleep with Rafe and Gabi. People have already stopped watching and soon I will be right with them!

We do need our nap and I will be going to sleep watching monotone Rafe and his awful sister. Maybe Saint Rafe should find out what his sister has been up tocratger than follow my EJAMI to the safehouse. He was acting all high and mighty and blamed Sami for the end of their relationship when he was also falling in lovd with Carrie.

sorry that should say what his sister has been up to

I have liked Days better the last couple of weeks – the scenes, character interactions, the pace. It has seemed that they have tightened it up a bit, and it is more focused, but I hope that they stay with it because they have done that before, and then lost it by going into too many different directions, pulling people apart, etc. They should continue to stay focused on the ‘core’ group of characters, and keep developing good storylines around them, and then have other characters in and out peridically.

Love Ian Buchanan (Duke) coming back to General Hospital. It is a nice counter balance to the younger kid stories. And as evil as he is, I like seeing “Jerry Jax” wreaking his havoc like nobody else can (well, almost nobody). And how about Cesar Faison, maybe not right away…can’t have too many bad guys at the same time. He also has a history with Anna, and they really need someone to come back to PC and renovate Windermere to it’s ” former glory.” Since the demise of the Quartermaines and their mansion, all we have left is the hospital , Metro Court and Kelly’s.

Loving Lucas and Sami 🙂

Ej/Sami/Lucas is a great triangle but to cancel Lucas out and replace him with dull Rafe..what a mistake..
