Soapside: OLTL's Tika Sumpter, Y&R's Bierdz, GH's Vaughan and LoCicero, and more!

sumpter.jpgOne Life to Live’s Tika Sumpter talks about life as Layla and the men in her life; first her relationship with the gay Officer Fish and the very straight macho, Cristian Vega, in Michael Fairman’s latest edition of his column, Soapside: Advocate’s Guide to Daytime. Here is an excerpt below when Tika talks about Layla and Cris finally having their first big kiss and what her pal, David Fumero’s wife, Melissa, would have to say about it!

Soapside – So, did BFFs Melissa and Tika compare notes on Fumero’s lip-locks? Tika yelps, “Oh no! Absolutely not! Oh, hell no! We don’t even talk about it, and if we do, she will make fun of it. I am not going to her house going, ‘David kissed me today and it was amazing’ NO! David is not a bad kisser and he is a beautiful man, and I give him that, but he is all Melissa’s. I definitely want to see how it looks on TV and I am excited to see it because so many people have been stopping me on the street and writing in asking, ‘When are they going to see a kiss?’ I don’t think Melissa is going to watch it!”

And since Melissa’s Adrianna was one of Layla’s best friends, once she exited the series, so too did other gal pals of Layla’s, leaving her girlfriend-less. But Layla has a way of dealing with that loss. “I can hang out with the gay boys! ”

Next, Y&R’s Thom Bierdz talks about Phillip III’s lack of romance and how his story and his days at the soap seem to be over.

Soapside -“I think they got a little cautious about that. I can tell you this, the people directly in charge of me, such as Maria Arena Bell [co-exec prod and head writer, Y&R] are so gay-affirmative and friendly, but I don’t know what their bosses are like… but this is something that needs to be overcome. I am excited and prepped to do a gay romance in daytime. It’s not just about Thom Bierdz, it’s about gay representation. If it’s not me, then it should be somebody else and it’s time that the gay population is represented on Y&R, absolutely.”

GH’s Greg Vaughan on his exit from GH, Soap Stars support AIDS Walk LA and more are part of the new feature.

GH Faves Finola Hughes, Ian Buchanan, Brooklyn Rae Silzer, Marc Anthony Samuel In New IGTV Series, ‘Enter Exit’

This week, General Hospital’s Finola Hughes (Anna) and some very good friends and acting partners debuted in a new IGTV series, directed by Hughes amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and it’s a thriller! What else would we expect from the woman who plays super spy Anna Devane on the ABC daytime drama series.

The IGTV (Instagam’s longer video application) series is called, Enter Exit, and there are 11 episodes, and the first one dropped on Monday.  It is  written by TV scribe Matt Boren, and also stars some of Port Charles’ longtime favorites that include: Ian Buchanan (Ex-Duke), Brooklyn Rae Silzer (Emma) and Marc Anthony Samuel (Felix).

Hughes told SOD how she was inspired to come up with the concept for the show:  “I started to think about, if you’re in lockdown, what would be a narrative where you could act in a vacuum, basically? I first started thinking about what my character would be — a retired (government) agent. And then there’s some reason that I’m retired. And I started to think about stationary shots and walking into your closeup and all those kinds of things. I left (the rest) with Matt; it was basically, ‘Whatever he writes, we’ll do.’ And I just sort of concentrated on how, feasibly, we could do it.”’

Boren, who has been an ardent viewer of GH from its hey day, shared on working off Hughes seeds of an idea to what Enter Exit is about: “In a sense, it’s a local detective thriller that starts out small — and understandably so as season one takes place during the pandemic. However, what we seed throughout these first 11 mini-episodes hints at a show that longs to be on a much larger, more global scale. We were absolutely inspired by ’80s GH — the WSB, the espionage and larger than life stories that were so thrilling, and through Devane/Scorpio/Lavery/Donnelly/Jones, so grounded. Throw that in with some Killing Eve, X-Files and (this will make sense down the line) Stranger Things, and you have a recipe that might be pages away in our cookbook.”

Now check out episode 1 below featuring Hughes and Silzer and make sure to follow Finola’s IG account for all-new installments of Enter Exit.

So, what do you think about the concept of the series? Excited to see more? Let us know via the comment section.
