Terri Colombino talks new OLTL Role & ATWT Reid/Chris ending!

As the World Turns favorite Terri Colombino (Ex-Katie) spoke with TV Guide for a preview of her new role of Aubrey Wentworth, the secret sweetheart of Joey Buchanan (Tom Degnan) on One Life to Live who will first be seen on November 29. She also discusses the fan backlash to the ending of the Reid Oliver/Chris Hughes storyline that ended in tragedy in Oakdale. Here are a few excerpts!
Colombino on if she hopes she will be vying for the attention of Joey with his ex-flame Kelly (Gina Togoni): “Oooh, I hope so! I love triangles, and I love Gina! I did my very first scenes with her. Kelly and Aubrey meet on the plane and start chatting it up, girlfriend-style. Kelly says there’s this guy in her life she’s finally realized is her true love and she’s going to tell him. And Aubrey talks about her man and how she’s going to Llanview to see him. Neither ever mentions the name Joey — but of course they’re both talking about the same guy!”
Colombino on ATWT sacrificing the gay character of Reid in order for the straight character of Chris to live and love and have a heart: “I had no idea about the controversy until after the show was off the air. I didn’t know people were upset but I can certainly understand it. They loved Reid and latched right onto him, and Eric is an amazing actor. I think they’re making it a sexual orientation issue — why does the gay guy have to be the only one who is not happy at the end? — but I don’t believe it was that at all. Chris’s heart condition and Reid’s death provided a huge and important story for the whole Hughes family. Look at the work Kathryn Hays [Kim] did — she’s going to win an Emmy! It’s understandable that people want everything tied up with a nice little bow. Everybody wants everybody happy, and Luke and Reid had developed such a great relationship. They were just starting out in life. I understand the disappointment, but I was surprised at the depth of it.”

ATWT Alum Martha Byrne Pays Tribute to Eileen Fulton: “The Original Soap Star Who Paved the Way for the Likes of a Susan Lucci or Andrea Evans”
Tributes and remembrances are pouring in for the the late Eileen Fulton, who passed away on July 14th at the age of 91. Fulton broke the soap opera mold back in the early 60’s when she was cast to play Lisa Miller on As the World Turns, who would turn out to be the first villiainess, vixen, and homewrecker of daytime television.
Fans of the soap loved to love to hate her for how she destroyed many lives in her quests to nab a husband; especially one she had set her sights set on. In fact, Lisa was married 8 times during the history of the show. Fulton was with ATWT on and off until the final year of the show in 2010.
Martha Byrne, who has been Fulton’s castmate for a time (Bryne played Lily Snyder from 1985 to 1989 and then again from 1993-2008 where she also played Rose D’Angelo), took to her account on x to share her thoughts on what Eileen meant to the genre, and also spoke on how Fulton handled not being as front and center on the soap operas as the years went by.

Photo: JPI
“What can I say about Eileen Fulton. The original soap star who paved the road for the likes of a Susan Lucci or Andrea Evans,” began Bryne. “Since Eileen started on ATWT when the show was live, there aren’t enough pieces of history for us to truly grasp the enormity of her stardom and presence in the entertainment business. I remember being so impressed that she was a writer. The best part was she would use real stories from behind the scenes and change the names. Maybe that was her way of giving the audience a wink to include them even more.”

Photo: CBS
Bryne went to share, “She (Eileen) loved her fans and she had many. I went to her one woman shows and the place was always packed. As the years went on and her role wasn’t as prominent as it had been she took it with class. I never heard her complain as many did who were frustrated they didn’t have a storyline. She was always a class act and a true pro who knew a storyline or another opportunity was only around the corner. She knew her value and was secure in herself. A national treasure who shaped the entire industry. Thank you Eileen. I’m sure there was a pink feather boa waiting for you just inside the pearly gates.”
So, what did you think about the sentiments shared by Martha on the legendary Eileen Fulton? Would you agree, as we have previously noted, that Lisa as played by Eileen, was really the prototype for all soap opera “bad girls” to follow? Did you appreciate the fact that while having a more diminished role over the last few decades of ATWT, Eileen took it in stride? Share your thoughts via the comment section below.

‘As the World Turns’ Legendary Eileen Fulton Passes Away at 91
The iconic Eileen Fulton, who was daytime’s first bad girl as Lisa Miller on As the World Turns, has died at the age of 91. According to the obituary on her passing, Fulton died earlier this week on July 14th in Asheville, North Carolina, after a period of declining health.
Fulton was born Margaret Elizabeth McLarty in Asheville on September 13, 1933. After studying acting in New York City, she changed her name to Eileen Fulton, when in 1960 she was cast in the film, Girl of the Night, co-starring with Anne Francis.
Eileen would change the face of daytime drama when in 1960 she was cast as the disruptor to the family dynamic, Lisa Miller, on the CBS soap opera. Throughout her ATWT run, the character of Lisa would eventually be married eight times to: Bob Hughes (1960–1964), John Eldridge (1965–1967), Michael Shea (1969–1970), Grant Coleman (1975–1979) ,Whit McColl (1982–1984), Earl Mitchell (1986–1987), Eduardo Grimaldi (1994–1995), and Martin Chedwyn (1996).

ATWT historians know that Lisa’s full name by the time the series went off the air in 2010 was: Lisa Miller Hughes Eldridge Shea Colman McColl Mitchell Grimaldi Chedwyn. Fulton played the role with only brief interruptions until the show was cancelled that year making her one of the longest-running tenured soap opera actors in US history. Other performers who took on the role of Lisa in Fulton’s absence included: Jane Powell, Maeve McGuire, Pamela King, Betsy Von Furstenberg, Lynn Rogers and Carmen Duncan.
Throughout her time on ATWT, it was Fulton’s eagerness to play Lisa as a villainess that contributed to the character’s popularity and therefore its longevity. She was inducted into the Soap Opera Hall of Fame in 1998 and was awarded a Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. In addition, in 1988, Fulton received her first-ever Daytime Emmy Award nomination in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Daytime Drama Series.
The legendary star was also infamous for the grandmother clause she inserted into her contract that guaranteed she would never have to play a grandmother on the soap. In an interview with the LA Times in 2000 she shared, “At that time, grandmothers had no romance at all – and I wasn’t about to let that happen to me.” At some point, this all changed and she became OK with the idea of grandmother-hood. At one point, ATWT fans were so angry at the manipulative villainess played by Fulton that she had to employ a bodyguard to protect her.

When Futon stepped away from the show, at one point, she left to star in ATWT”s 1965 spinoff Our Private World, which aired Wednesday and Friday nights on CBS. In the story, Lisa had fled Oakdale after dumping Bob to move to Chicago, where she wed the wealthy John Eldridge (Nicolas Coster, who later would play Eduardo Grimaldi). Our Private World was canceled after four months on the air, and Fulton went back to As the World Turns in 1966.
When Eileen received her Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, she was part of a group of actors who also received the honor that year including: her ATWT co-stars, Don Hastings and Helen Wagner, plus Ruth Warrick, Frances Reid, John Clarke, Ray MacDonnell, Don Hastings, Jeanne Cooper, and Rachel Ames.

For a time early in her career, Fulton not only was appearing in As The World Turns, which at that time was broadcast live, she was simultaneously appearing on Broadway in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf and off-Broadway in the long-running musical The Fantasticks.
Fulton performed her cabaret act for many years in venues around New York and Los Angeles. In 1970, she co-authored her first autobiography, How My World Turns. In 1995 she co-authored a second autobiography, As My World Still Turns, to celebrate her 35th anniversary on As the World Turns. She also authored a series of mystery novels. In 2019, Eileen retired from show business and moved to Black Mountain, North Carolina.

She is survived by her brother, Charles Furman McLarty (Karen) of Black Mountain; niece Katherine Morris (David) and their children, Everly Ann Morris and Easton Lane Morris of Fort Mill, S.C.; and sister-in-law Chris Page McLarty of Camden, Maine. She was pre-deceased by her parents and her brother, James Fulton McLarty.

ATWT Alum Tala Ashe Scores Tony Award Nomination; OLTL Alum Jonathan Groff and ‘Glee’ Favorite Darren Criss Also Receive Nods
Nominations for the 78th annual Tony Awards were announced Thursday morning honoring the best in the recent Broadway season.
The awards will be presented on June 8th live from Radio City Music Hall live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ with Wicked star Cynthia Erivo, a Tony winner for The Color Purple, hosting the show.
While musicals Buena Vista Social Club, Maybe Happy Ending and Death Becomes Her topped the nominations with 10 each, the list of Hollywood names and former soap opera alums who will be part of Broadway’s bigges makes it interesting drama for Broadway’s biggest nights.

Photo: JPI
In addition, there were big time snubs including: Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal and Kieran Culkin, who failed to make the nominations list, while other big names including: George Clooney are in the running.
Soap fans should take note that Tala Ashe (ex-Ameera Ali-Aziz, As the World Turns – 2007) scored her first-ever Tony nomination in the Best Featured Actress in a play category for her performance in English. The play takes place in an Iranian classroom where four adult students and their teacher leapfrog through a linguistic playground, this is a funny, stunning triumph about the universal foibles of language and miscommunication.

On As the World Turns, Ashe’s Ameera became involved with Luke and Noah, after she fled Iraq when her mother died, after her protector, Noah’s father, the Colonel, was reassigned and imprisoned. Once in Oakdale, when he heard her sad story, Noah (Jake Silbermann) agreed to a marriage of convenience, upsetting then boyfriend Luke Snyder (Van Hansis).
Once again, Tony Award winner, Jonathan Groff (ex-Henry Mackler, One Life to Live -2007) had scored another nomination. This year for his star turn as Bobby Darin in the new musical, Just in Time. Groff is competing in the category alongside former Glee star, Darren Criss, who is nominated for his work as a retired robot in Maybe Happy Ending.

Interestingly enough, Jeb Brown who is nominated in the Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for Dead Outlaw, was formerly the bandmate of Beyond the Gates and General Hospital star, Jon Lindstrom.
Audra McDonald made Tony history scoring her record-setting 11th overall nomination, this year for her starring role in the musical revival of Gypsy. However, she will face-off with former Pussycat Dolls singer, Nicole Scherzinger, who plays Norma Desmond in the latest adaption of Sunset Boulevard, where she is getting all the raves this Broadway season.

Here we go again. Another former STRAIGHT actor/actress from ATWT basically poo-poo’d the show’s LGBT fans. Terri, you’ve just lost my respect. Don’t count on me catching you on OLTL, another show that basically crashed and burned a very promising gay storyline for the sake of their “straight” viewers.
If you end up without a job at OLTL, I hope to God you don’t end up on either B&B or Y&R. I’d FF through your scenes so fast, it’d make that blonde hair of yours end up somewhere else.
I always thought it was the writers that wirte the storylines, not the actors. Is it fair to blame an actor or actress for the scripts they are given? I wish OLTL would bring back Oliver Fish, but won’t quit watch the show just because his character is off the canvus.
It’s not the Gay/Straight issue-=-Chris is a HUGHES, and of course, they couldn’t kill off the last of the Hughes clan at the end of the show! No soapbox needed here to figure out why they had to do this……
Well tahonia, they could have done away with Gabriel, Craig’s son. He was only on the show what, 4 months before it went off the air? That was an easily expendable character and knowing Craig’s penchant for screwing up his kids’ lives, this is one character that ATWT could have done away with. But to snuff out Reid and leave Luke grieving with no happy ending was absolutely uncalled for. No matter how much Craig has changed (which wasn’t much), this is one character that could have suffered yet another loss and he would have deserved it.
And don’t give the bullcrap line of and I quote you, “It’s not the Gay/Straight issue”. It most certainly was a gay/straight issue. OLTL basically got rid of Kish (Kyle and Fish) because they were getting major backlash from their heterosexual audience over the storyline and the EP of OLTL decided to do away with them to save OLTL from losing anymore viewers, plain and simple. About the one decent gay or lesbian storyline that has ever been done was the Bianca Montgomery storyline on AMC. AMC did NOT shy away from that at all and they should be commended for it. GL gave Olivia and Natalia a somewhat happy ending but Ellen Wheeler would NOT let them show any kind of affection on the show, due in large part because of Wheeler’s Mormon views which she allowed to cloud her judgment when it came to Otalia’s storyline on GL.
Just my thoughts for the day.
They didn’t “have” to do anything. They didn’t “have” to make Chris sick. They didn’t “have” to kill off ANYONE. Chris getting better was in no way dependent on Reid dying, until the writers decided to come up with one of the worst story lines on the soap ever. I mean, really. Reid being unable to get his seatbelt off? And what, exactly, did Reid die of, considering every organ was in good enough shape to be be donated to someone else?
And considering there’s many Hughes characters on the show, Chris is not the “last” of the Hughes clan. He’s not even the youngest of the Hughes clan.
At least Goutman, Wheeler and the TPTB at AMC have told lgbt storylines. You can’t say the same for Brad Bell, who owns B&B. That soap revolves around fashion and they have never had an lgbt char ever. Their racial minority portrayals are even worse. The most they have had black chars is during this homeless storyline.
Teri is a great gal, but like the writers and TPTB she had no clue. For the love of God, the show was ending. There was no reason to kill Reid and leave Luke to grieve. And the backlash from the fans who loved Luke and Reid as a couple was like noything I had ever seen.Reid did not have to die….there was no reason.Van and Eric as Luke and Reid were so believable that in all my years of watching ATWT I never loved a couple as much as them. And the chemistry was so hot, hot , hot! I’m a straight woman of three straight adult sons so believe me i have no agenda.Bit this was a love story that should have had a happy ending like every other love story….but it didn’t…..please somebody tell me why.the show was going off for good….couldn’t the LuRe fans have a happy ending too!
I’ve thought about this a lot – and I think the reason that they chose to keep Chris alive at the expense of Reed is that Chris is a core character from a core family. Reed, IMO, was very much like the character of Jack in Titanic – a noble, heroic and romantic figure who existed at one specific period of time for Luke (as Jack did for Rose), to show them the maturity and value of love and sacrifice. Reed had no ties on the canvas to anyone, he was a loner with no family, and it was thru his connection to Luke that he learned of love and fulfillment. He was one of the great characters that this show was capable of creating – and as such, will be remembered by soap fans forever.
This show of 54 years was going off the air forever. There was no reason to kill Reid and leave Luke grieving.Everybody should have had a happy ending so we long time viewers could have remembered this show with happy thoughts. The sadness I feel for the Luke /Reid ending has truly destroyed all my happy memories of this show. And Reid was no longer a loner, he fell in love with Luke and they fulfilled each other. What a disgusting ending to a beautiful love story.Luke finally fell in love with a man and became a man because of it and Reid became so loving because he loved Luke.No one had to be sacrificed because the show was ending!Am i bitter, you bet!!!!
all of the writers & actors of any show have to follow the same script & back whatever the EP’s decision is if they ever want to keep working in this industry. if they come out & say that it was a horrible decision & it shouldn’t of been done that way is probably labeled a troublemaker & not given roles.
they also don’t have an emotional attachment to the characters like the fans do & as long as they get a scene that can be considered for an emmy they’re happy with it, hence the comments she made about Kathryn (Kim) & of course previous comments about Van being nominated for an emmy.
i think also that the 3 months between when they filmed a scene & it’s aired also contributed to this also. they forget what they’ve shot & are already on to other scenes & don’t know until it’s too late how the audience will respond to a scene & they can’t easily correct a storyline when the audience is in an uproar. if they would of done the 1 month or however long all of the other soaps use it can be corrected or rewritten when the fans start to complain.
but i think that the biggest problem is that alot of the EP’s just don’t care what the fans want & they have their own agenda & they don’t deviate from it & that’s why they’re losing fans & are in danger of being canceled.
Nope limeybird2. The actors don’t have to back whatever their soap does if they want to keep acting in Daytime. Many soap actors have spoken in interviews against their own soaps either while they were on their soap or when they had left their soap. And many of these actors have returned to their soaps or landed other soap roles.
I too like Terry as an actress, but she just doesn’t get it. Who cares about it providing an important story for the Hughes family. If Chris would not have survived, that still would have been an important story. I’m just saying that Luke & Reid deserved a happy ending just as the straight couples were given. Nancy’s death should have been more meaningful than it was. One death was enough. Why draw us into this great LuRe love story just give us such a tragic end. Don’t get me started on Chris and Katie having sex after only a couple of weeks, yet nothing for LuRe after months. May I say how homophobic was that. How pathetic it was that even in the end of the show Chris wasn’t even sure that he wanted the COS position. He didn’t deserve Reid’s or anyone else’s heart.
very well said!!!
I think Teri is so full of herself!! By the looks of it Aubery is set to be Katie2.0 no thankyou one life to live. Mmm Teri I’m 100 % positive god had nothing with you getting this role rather the devil!! this would explain yr arrogance, feeling so self important, please those casting people knew who Terri was Jean Passinate is writing at oltl and I think the 10 other girls auditing were also just has entitled as you, I’m sure they were just as established as you are in the acting field!, look at list of actor’s that were in the running for Joey. I thinkATWT should have let Chris die and given Reed, Luke their happy ending, but since Katie the sweetheart of show needed a happy ending Luke Reed suffer. Reed dying had every thing to do with Katie getting her happy ending!! Further more if the writers feel the actor is capable they will write accordingly. The fact that Katie showed no development and promise shows that colombin is not A capable enough actress. I find it hiliarious that Terri is presuding a career in holistic foods, everytime I seen pictures of her at events, she was chowing down on ice cream, steak mash an gravy, white wine, meat an dairy wow Teri you really into healthy eating!! Not!! Fyi god doesn’t appreciate liars, an adulterous, and the way you went about getting this role shows that you have a bad heart ! You, Justifying every single one your action in your interview proves my point. Ps what goes up must come down. karma is her name.
Wow! “BITCH” MUCH?
It is Reid not Reed
Karen, you are correct, actor’s to a degree have to do a certain amount of liaring but this chick take the cake in the liaring department. Ooh I think Terri had an emotionally attachment to Katie, for a evey stupid thing Katie did, Teri always defendd her character’s actions, I remember when Mara won her first emmy. Teri had a lot to say about Carly, Carly fans ect….. Terri is full of B S! seriously the luke reed scenes were really hard to forget an she to was in middle of that sl, for most part of it. There are so many ways of getting your point across without coming off as witch. At first I liked Terri but I do not like her anymore.- Aubery aka Big Apple,ps come emmy time. You just kn Teri will summit something off LR SL.
its not fair to blame the actor’s, but as an actor you have a responsibility to how you answer questions put to you, in my book being humble goes along way. An in that interview Terri is anything but.
Reid (out and out fan favorite character) was unceremonoiusly murdered to save Chris (a character with absolutely no rating with the fans). I am wondering if CG, JP, and ATWT would ever consider even the thought of killing a straight character to save a gay character, let alone actually writing such a story and airing it. I am extremely, extremely happy that ATWT bit the dust and is off the air. I sincerely hope that CG and JP will also bite the dust in each and every of their current and future (if any) endeavors.
Now that JP is associated with OLTL, I hope that soap bites the dust ASAP. It would be a field day when JP is unemployed for the rest of her life. She, and her twin evil spawn, CG, emphatically destroyed LURE of ATWT in the most homophobic manner. It will be very well deserved if their careers are ruthlessly steamrolled.
George ouch we would be left with no soaps as Chris Goutman is now working for Y&R!! His a show killer of sorts. I would have loved emmy winner Martha Byne on one life to live anyone other than emmy nominie ( for younger actress- mind you) Terri Colombino. I still can’t believe that she is so tacky in that interview, micheal fairman did such a good job of interviewing Terri, early this year what I will always Remember about that interview is a comment made to TC about a conversation he had with Austin about feeding his two kids. An TC totally brushed it off as Austin being happy. Now she is all into if its in gods plans it is as simple as that. Heartless, terri as been out of work three months her husband works an she couldnt let her bf ( who hasn’t had a soild acting gig in almost two years) whoes wife is a stay at home mom have a chance to feed his two boys plus wife. Its suprising how much gossip these magazines have on these two.
Big apple: It is much, much better not to have soaps than have CG and JP be associated with any soaps. Those heartless beings do’nt have any respect or consideration for their loyal viewers and fanbase. Would you want your heart to be broken by those merciless morons with another LURE debacle like fiasco. My GF and me don’t. We are never going to watch anything in which CG and JP are associated. Thnaks for letting us know that cold-blodded CG is working with Y&R. We will definitely not watch OLTL and Y&R. We invested our time and loyalty watching LURE and in the end we were completely shattered. From the back-lash of the fans at the horrrendous LURE ending, I am sure LURE and NUKE loyal fanbase who faithfulluy followed ATWT over the years felt totally cheated and sold-out.
Believe me, as a long time viewer of ATWT shattered doesn’t begin to describe how i felt when Reid died and Luke was left to grieve.I watched Luke grow from a boy to a man ….he became confident, had a purpose in life, and really fell in love with Reid.Reid changed from a snarky know it all to a loving and even tender man when he fell for Luke.Just watching their smiles to each other, and the looks they gave to each other….and the kisses ,unbelievable.I stopped thinking of them as characters on a soap and only saw them as two men totally in love with each other who really brought out the best in each other. I loved them and will always love them. What a disgusting ending to the best couple in years.I keep asking why? If the show wasn’t going off the air and they just got too hot for some people to handle, i could see why they’d do this, even though I would have been so despondent too.but the show was going off forever…it did not make sense and never will.TPTB hurt such loyal fans….how cruel. My favorite soap was going away but everyone should have had a happily ever after.I will never invest myself in any soap.ever again. But I do wish Eric and Van all the best….no other actors could have made Luke and Reid come to life.Their chemistry was unbelievable. And as Luke said to Reid,”you’re babbling’ before he kissed him…And i apologize because I’m babbling now!!!!
george: i feel your pain.and thanks for the eye opener I was really p.o to hear that chris goutman was w/ yandr. considering what he did to atwt. i dont realy have time to watch y and r. when yu think of all the free time i have nt watching y an r or oltl. i thank god i rather spend that time in my garden enjoy the fresh air. takin a walk or hanging with my crew at the mall. i refuse to watch that twit teri or any of chris goutman work.
Mmc, there isnt anything wrong in blabbing. i think it is great to get our points across. and view our opinons on the shows, actors good or bad.
Hi big apple, maybe you missed the scene when Luke told Reid , ‘you’re babbling” not blabbing, but it was such a touching scene. And then Noah had to show up and they stopped what they were doing.but to tell the truth, i’m babbling and blabbing again. Some of us just can’t let the Luke / Reid story go can we? I know I’m guilty!
Some of these comments are pretty harsh. I also hated the Reid ending, and to me it did feel like the gay characters were sacrificed so the straight characters got their happily ever after. That said, I’m not going to attack someone who doesn’t feel the same way as me. She has a difference of opinion; so what? That might make her naive, but not a bad person. It’s disappointing that some let their upset over the storyline make them want to bash those with a different view.
I agree….everybody is entitled to their opinion and they really should be able to express it.I’m still sad that the show is gone but I think I could have accepted it if everyone got a happily ever after.I just hope all the actors go on to wonderful things, especially Eric and my sweetheart Van!!!
