The Eileen Davidson Interview – The Young and the Restless & Days of our Lives

Soap survivor, mega-talent, Daytime Emmy winner, Eileen Davidson has had quite the last couple of years!  After being at one time fired by The Young and the Restless, and then making sporadic returns over the last few years to the number one soap opera, she is finally back on contract this year, and has returned to Genoa City on a more permanent basis in her role as fan favorite Ashley Abbott!

Meanwhile, over at Days of our Lives, after triumphantly reprising the role of evil Kristen DiMera in 2013, she won her first ever Outstanding Lead Actress Daytime Emmy for the role this past June!  Then, after taking time off to be with her family after her contract was finished, DAYS asked her to return again, where she is currently stirring up all kinds of trouble in Salem, as Kristen schemes for the heart of Brady Black (Eric Martsolf)!  In fact, it seems Davidson is everywhere these days, now doing double duty on the soaps, plus there are those continuous “reports” that she is also in the cast of the new season of the hit reality series, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, although still unconfirmed by the show, or Davidson, at this time!  Talk about a “Girl on fiyah”, Davidson is that girl!  With projects abound, beloved by her fans, and having all these professional opportunities colliding at this time in her life, it’s like a Cinderella story of it’s own for Eileen … and she has earned every bit of it.

On-Air On-Soaps sat down with the beautiful star in her dressing room at Y&R to get the dish on: Ashley’s return, if Stitch (Sean Carrigan) is definitely her new on-screen man, what kind of story she wants to see play out this time out, and more!  And on the Salem side, Eileen reveals what it was like to film that final key scene with James Scott (EJ), where Kristen injects her half-brother with some drug that could just resurrect him from the dead!  Plus, what she thought of the other men that have been in the eye of Hurricane Kristen on DAYS; Daniel (Shawn Christian) and Eric (Greg Vaughan), plus she shares her thoughts on reprising the role of none other than poor put upon, Susan Banks! Always forthright, funny, and oh-so-smart, here is our chat with Eileen!

MICHAEL:

What made you truly decide to come back to The Young and the Restless … except the obvious … a contract?

EILEEN:

I have said this before, I felt there was unfinished business with Jack (Peter Bergman) and Jabot, and everything.  I love working with Melissa Ordway (Abby).  She is a great Abby, and they have changed the character a bit, so it’s a better mother/daughter relationship the way they are writing it.  I was also ready to revisit the role, and they really wanted me back, and that helped!  So it was like, “You really want me back? Well, O.K.” (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Apparently your two main soap characters Ashley and Kristen have something in common! Ashley is sort of a chemist working in her fragrance labs and developing new wonder concoctions and Kristen knows how to find experimental and weird drugs to inject people! (Laughs)

EILEEN:

Yes, they are chemists in their own way.  Thanks for pointing that out.  People always ask me about the similarities and there aren’t any really, but hey, this could be the similarities… chemicals!

MICHAEL:

Since you were unceremoniously fired several years ago on Y&R, and now you are back on contract, does this feel like vindication in any way for you?

EILEEN:

Courtesy/Y&RPinterest

I don’t know if it feels like vindication, but in some ways its vindication and it’s a changing of the guard each time this happens.  It’s hard to feel vindicated when they are not here anymore.  It’s almost like its par for the course, and the fact that every time I have been let go, it’s worked out really well for me.  I can’t feel any need to be vindicated, because it was such a blessing. The first time I went over to The Bold and the Beautiful and had a great time over there. That’s a great show and greatly produced, and I loved the people. And the second time I went to DAYS, and however that transpired doesn’t matter.  Its incidental compared to the experience I had over there; which again was great people and I won an Emmy. So, how can I feel the need to be vindicated except for saying: “Thank you for letting me go?”  Seriously! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

It is interesting how life works itself out!

EILEEN:

Exactly! I could not have planned it any better. In the story I was given at the time, there was not very much happening for me on Y&R.  I was pretty much languishing in the hinter worlds, and then I was given this amazing story on DAYS, where I was able to express a part of my creativity that I never had before.

MICHAEL:

Are you concerned at all, now being back on Y&R, that you won’t end up having story yet again?  Did you demand to have a certain kind of story when you signed your new contract?

EILEEN:

You know, I am not concerned yet.  I will wait and see how things transpire.  I did not demand certain story. Again, I know how things change in this medium … so to demand one thing just doesn’t mean a lot in the bigger picture.  I think the writers have to feel inspired by you to write for you, and we will see. There are new writers again with Chuck Pratt taking over, and I have never worked with his writing before.

Courtesy/HallmarkChannel

MICHAEL:

Do you want Ashley to be “bitchier” this time?  It seems the writers are giving Ashley a bit of an edge now.

EILEEN:

They are writing her a bit bitchier.  She is stronger.  I mean, would you call her “bitchy” if she was a man?  I mean, if I was Ashton, and I was a guy, would you say, “Ashton, are you being bitchy coming back to the company?”  You come back stronger!  So I think now Ashley is more focused and she is stronger with some bitchy undertones, but it’s minor! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

What do you think about working with Sean Carrigan (Stitch)? And Stitch is a chemist now too!

EILEEN:

He is cute … and who knew Stitch was a chemist? (Laughs) Who knows what else he can do?

MICHAEL:

Did Ashley give him the job because she likes him and wants him, or did she truly feel the guy was qualified?

EILEEN:

No, no, no.  She is about business. The product she is working on is so huge to her that she would never hire somebody just the way their butt looks in tight pants.  Did I just say that? (Laughs) That was my outside voice. (Laughs) It’s really about Stitch being really good at what he did, and Ashley likes his energy.

MICHAEL:

So, this perfume sensation that Ashley has been working on is some sort of love potion! Did you know from the beginning what the secret scent was all about?

EILEEN:

I did not know at the beginning what it was … and they actually told me on set, because I needed to know what it was … so that I could play it and know how fabulous it really is! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Peter Bergman (Jack), Beth Maitland (Traci), and you, formed the nucleus of the Abbott family.  Over the years it seemed very clear, that the family was pushed aside by various writing regimes.   What are your thoughts on the shuffling of the Abbotts under the table, if you will?

EILEEN:

I think that was obvious, because the Abbotts were such a main family and a great family.  There were so many different dynamics … they weren’t a boring and a pedestrian soap opera family.  There is a great relationship between Jack and his sisters, and it’s complicated, and loving, and underhanded.  I think they are an iconic kind of soap family with all these different emotions going on, and just because of the changing of the guard, it kind of got cut up and mangled and struned aside.  So trying to pick up the pieces without our father was difficult.  I miss Jerry Douglas (John) all the time. He was a fabulous patriarch. We are trying to do the best we can without that, and having Peter here as long as he has been here, and Beth and me for as long as we started on the show together, is a great thing for all of us.  We love working together. We have grown up together. It’s wonderful.

MICHAEL:

So want does Ashley ultimately want … to takeover as CEO of Jabot?

EILEEN:

She wants to be Co-CEO.  I almost said, “She wants to be executive producer!” (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

You mean you want to be EP of Y&R?  That’s next!

EILEEN:

They have offered me that job!  (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

We are sure that could be next! (Laughs)  After all, you are doing everything right now!

EILEEN:

I will think about it, but at the end of next summer. (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Wait a minute!  If you were the executive producer of a soap opera, what would you do with it?

EILEEN:

Oh, my God.  I don’t know and I have no idea.  I have no desire to do that.  I know many soap stars want to direct and for me that’s a, “No, thank you.”  I have no interest.   I find it fascinating, and I have tons of respect for those who do it, but it’s not for me.

MICHAEL:

Do you think Ashley and Victor’s (Eric Braeden) romantic relationship is over, done, kaput, never to be addressed again?   Do you think Y&R would ever even considering revisit it, given that back in the day it was a classic moment on the show?

EILEEN:

I can never say, never.  I think they have been down that road, but if it’s written really great you can always go down that road again.

MICHAEL:

Switching over to Days of our Lives … we recently saw Kristen with a massive syringe in hand injecting a drug into a lifeless EJ (James Scott) in the morgue.  What did you think of that story point?

EILEEN:

I was only working on DAYS for two days a week with tons of shows in those days.   So, it was kind of weird and I was blind-sighted by it.  I then had to get into the spirit of it very quickly, and then I realized what it was.  I think it harkened back to the DAYS of old, under Jim Reilly (former head writer, DAYS) and I am all for that to a certain degree, because I think its fun.  I love that Kristen is doing her father’s bidding.

MICHAEL:

I loved that too!  And we, the audience don’t know what she did … if she resurrected him … or not?

EILEEN:
I guess you will have to wait until ten more years, who knows?  He could be Grandpa EJ if he comes back! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Did you ask the producers or the writers, “What the hell am I injecting into this dead guy’s arm?”  (Laughs)  Do you know what the drug was?

EILEEN:

I asked, and I do know, and I am not telling you! (Laughs) That would ruin all the fun! But, obviously if you are injecting a dead person with something, what do you think it means?  It wasn’t Botox he was getting! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Daniel Jonas (Shawn Christian) and Kristen have certainly got some heat building between them!  How has it been working with Shawn on your last visit to DAYS?

EILEEN:

Shawn is a doll, and a love, and we had so much fun beating the crap out of each other my first few weeks back this last time to DAYS.  They definitely wanted to establish chemistry between these two characters: that kind of like angry, messed-up psychologically sort of thing!

MICHAEL:

Well … that always means two people will have sex on a soap opera!

EILEEN:

And in real life too!  Who are we kidding?  They had a natural chemistry between them, and it was fun to play, and work with Shawn in a different capacity then I had before.

MICHAEL:

Does Kristen have any feelings for Dr. Daniel?

EILEEN:

What do you think? I think she likes BRADY (Eric Martsolf)! But, you know, Daniel is there. (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

You came back for the three months this last time back to DAYS to reprise the role of Kristen. Was this time more difficult?  Last time out, you had major Emmy scenes, wonderful writing, and tons of stuff to work with.  This time back, did it feel more disjointed?

EILEEN:

You know, it couldn’t have been like last time. That was like “lighting in a bottle.” That one year I had on the show, they didn’t really know me as an actress, really.  I also didn’t know what I was going to do, and I thought I was going to be playing more of a Susan.  It was just kismet.  So that worked that time, and it still worked this time, but I wasn’t there enough to build a story, and maybe the story wasn’t as great as what I had done before, because I had already done that.  So, what are you going to do?  It was still great to come back and I still had terrific scenes. I had a lot of family loss during that time, and that sort of changed things for me.

MICHAEL:

That must have been so extremely difficult.  How you were even able to perform your scenes?

EILEEN:

It was hard.  It was really, really hard.  I was on both of these shows.  I was on Y&R and DAYS, the week my sister passed.  At Y&R, they had to post-tape.   I went back to DAYS, maybe four days after my sister passed, and I broke down in the make-up room.  I was just a mess, and I had a big monologue to tape.  I said, “I won’t be able to say this. I know the lines, but I don’t trust myself right now because my focus is all over the place.” They were kind enough to cut it, and they gave a lot of the stuff in the scene to Arianne Zucker (Nicole).  They worked with me over at Y&R too, and you do the best you can, and it was a double whammy.  I was excited about going back (to DAYS) and then life happens. It’s mostly then about getting through.  I don’t think it affected the performances.

MICHAEL:

Susan Banks finally came back on screen!   The reaction was interesting! Many DAYS viewers seemed to be new-ish, and don’t remember her!  They would say she seems so out of place, which was one of your concerns about ever reprising her again.

EILEEN:

The most intimidating thing about doing it again, was that when Susan came on to the canvas back in the 90’s, it was a natural progression of being on a show where Marlena (Deidre Hall) was being possessed by the devil. So, Susan wasn’t that weird, compared to that! (Laughs) Susan was pretty damn normal!  It was great story back then. This time, it was very scary, but I actually fell into a character a lot easier than I thought I would.  I loved the dynamic between Susan and EJ!

MICHAEL:

Did you laugh when you did those scenes?

EILEEN:

Yeah, but I really wanted to ground here in reality.  She had to be a real mom concerned for her child.

MICHAEL:

Courtesy/NBC

I felt bad for her!  EJ was so dismissive of his own mother!

EILEEN:

I know! And the fact that she knows he is embarrassed by her, and the fact that she still loves him and she has got her own life, it was kind of sad. Ultimately, it was a challenge to play that character again with James Scott and the underlying humor. I can understand why new fans would be going, “What the hell is that?” Also, what was fabulous was that a lot of the younger actors on the show when I was on-screen while taping it were asking, “Who is that actress?”  They had no idea it was me!  It was kind of fun, and it was actually what happened the first time I did it many years ago.

MICHAEL:

Susan was tamed down a bit this time.  That must have been a conscience choice?

EILEEN:

Oh yeah, I had to.   had to temper it, and it was also written by different writers. I am glad though.  If she just came in like before, they would have just hauled her off to the funny farm, if somebody comes in going, “MEAN …MEAN … MEAN!”  You know, it just wouldn’t work, although I did get to get a “mean” in there.  They didn’t write that! I just threw that in … I had to! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

How was it playing the scenes against yourself in the scenes as Susan and Kristen?  Did your friend Lisa, play the other character in the scenes against you?

EILEEN:

Courtesy/NBC

Yes, she did!  My friend Lisa, and I had so much fun, and she had to learn all the lines.  I could not have done it without her.  They don’t do a lot of those double screen things anymore, and it was a new thing for this director we were working with, I believe. Having Lisa know the ropes as well as she does, she was very concerned that her hair looked like my hair was.  We both knew what we were doing, because we had done it before, but it could have taken hours. However, I think because Lisa was so good at it, and she was just on it, and so concerned and professional, that we just whipped right through that stuff.  It was very stressful, and the fact that I had Lisa there made it a thousand times easier and better.  We went out afterwards and had a couple of drinks, and thought it was amazing that we had the opportunity to relive that and do that again, because it was in doing the character of Susan Banks, that we became very close in the 90’s … and we have been very close ever since.

MICHAEL:

Did you want Susan to be in the story longer … or… did you feel it was just the right amount of time? Short, but sweet?

EILEEN:

I don’t want to say either way, honestly.  DAYS did the best they could given the timelines and time constraints I gave them.  I can’t say if they could have written it better. or it could have been better, I really don’t know.  I think it was great that they wrote her in at all!

MICHAEL:

James Scott and you had such great on-screen chemistry as half DiMera brother and sister. You were there on James final tape day!  How was it?

EILEEN:

I was! You know, I have been doing this a longtime and I have seen a lot of people come and go.  I just wish James nothing but the best.  It’s time for him to fly and do his own thing, and I think it’s awesome.  James and I had a lot of great on-screen chemistry from the get-go.

MICHAEL:

Another DAYS leading man, Eric Martsolf (Brady), has such an affinity for you, too!  He publicly, at the Daytime Emmys when accepting his award, noted that you stepped-up his game and made him a better actor!  Quite the compliment from your co-star!

EILEEN:

Oh, I stated crying when he was accepting his Emmy and mentioned me.  I thought even if I don’t win the Emmy, I just got a massive award from him. It was pretty incredible.

MICHAEL:

So Kristen’s end game in her mind, is that she still wants to end up with Brady?

EILEEN:

I like that, and that’s what I feel that she just loves him so much.  No matter what happens, she just loves him!  I love that! (Laughs)  She gets like a little girl around him. She regresses.

MICHAEL:

Look at all the hot men you have had on that show! Then there was Father Eric (Greg Vaughan) and Kristen’s rape of him! What did you think about that story point when you heard it?

EILEEN:

Courtesy/NBC

When they told me about that, I wasn’t too excited.  The whole thing about “raping” is just gross, whether it’s a woman doing it to a man, or whatever.  I wasn’t super excited about the plot point, but I understand the importance of it for that story, especially now that I have done it and seen the story play out.   I mean, Kristen always has a reason for everything she does.  I can pretty much justify everything Kristen has done.  She has her own way of looking at the world and it’s her perspective. She gets it, and she’s not happy about it, but what are you going to do?

MICHAEL:

Y&R’s Ashley is not as amped-up a character like DAYS Kristen.  You had mentioned in other interviews that you would find it difficult playing Kristen at that high-intensity and to sustain her, day in and day out, without a major story to go with it.  Do you still feel that way?

EILEEN:

It’s very tiring.  Now, I could be wrong, but I don’t want to see Kristen ending up just having coffee and being background for other actors who are now carrying story, where she is just putting in snide remarks here and there to people who are passing through the Horton Town Square.  Kristen is front burner, and she has an objective that she has to succeed, and she wants to win. It sort of dilutes the character if she is not driving story, because otherwise it’s not as interesting to me.  I would rather leave and come back and then “Boom”, rather than just hanging out and treading water.

MICHAEL:

Jen Lilley (Theresa) and you are such fun on-screen together as evil adversaries!  How has it been working with her in that capacity?

EILEEN:

I love that Kristen and Theresa are two crazy women and it’s so much fun!  I like the way Kristen treats her like she is just a gnat! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

There are “rumors” that you are in the cast of the new season of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills!  And these pictures of you keep popping up everywhere!

EILEEN:

I have no idea what you are talking about, and you know, they can Photoshop anything!

MICHAEL:

What have the fans been saying to you on social media about your return as Y&R’s Ashley thus far?

EILEEN:

So far, from what I have seen, the people are glad that I am back, and the new opening title sequence began to air on Y&R recently that included me.  I think the fans seem to like that, too. I think I am at the top of the opening.

MICHAEL:

Well, you know why? You’re a big star and the EP of the show! (Laughs)

EILEEN:

And … I am interning as well (Laughs)! Then, I thought I would get a job in the CBS commissary, too! (Laughs)  I can flip a good burger!

MICHAEL:

As the EP, head writer and chef of the CBS commissary … what would you really like to see happen for Ashley this time out?

EILEEN:

I would really like to see Ashley get into it with Jack, and he tries to undermine her and he gets underhanded, and she doesn’t put up with that.  I would like there to be some showdown.  I would love for Jack to use the fact that she was never John Abbott’s daughter.  He knows that, and I would love to play that.  If that were ever to come out, I would love it.  It’s a fantastic story point and nobody has ever gone there, but I don’t know if the character of Jack is that underhanded anymore.  I would also love Ashley to get in a triangle with Stitch and Victoria (Amelia Heinle).  I would love Ashley to fall for somebody she shouldn’t fall for, but maybe fall for somebody she doesn’t want to fall for.  She’s never done that before!

MICHAEL:

One of the great things about Ashley back in the heyday was that the character was a heroine to root for!

EILEEN:

That is why I would like her to be going through something like getting her heartbroken, but in a great long story arc, and then it would be about getting the guy back.  I think it would be your typical soap opera story, but done really well, as well as being something meaty, and juicy, and cool.

MICHAEL:

When I interview other actors in the genre, you can come up a lot in conversation, and especially they comment on how amazing you look!  What is the secret to “Being Eileen Davidson”?

EILEEN:

It’s smoke and mirrors … I really don’t know.  I work out a lot and I enjoy it.  I didn’t use to like it, I do now and I have to do it.  I don’t exercise a ton, but I do cardio every day, and I also try to do Pilates, or something.  I get a little Botox here and there, nothing major. I have never had a face lift.  I think it’s good genes, I guess.  You know, I feel like I am going to wake up one morning and the whole thing is going to be on the floor. (Laughs)  Gravity is not a kind friend.  I will tell my husband, “Maybe, I should get a face lift” and he says, “If you get a face lift … I will divorce you!”  I will have to hope he is out of town for like a month and then when he comes back my face will be pulled so tight.  I will go, “Hi, Honey! I missed you so much!  What? I had nothing done. What are you talking about?” (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Do you also play poker now that your husband, Vincent Van Patten is a major poker player?

EILEEN:

Well, my husband’s show the World Poker Tournament does a tournament every year; and I went on a Caribbean cruise with him, recently.  Now, I am thinking about actively doing that, and becoming a dealer, too! (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

So, you will be dealing in Vegas at the Golden Nugget on weekends, after working at the commissary at CBS by day, while you are starring on two network soaps! Over-achiever! (Laughs)  Finally, where did you put the Emmy?  Do people stop by the house and want to take a picture with it?  Has winning the Emmy changed your life in some way?  It was one of the most amazing moments in your career.

EILEEN:

It’s in my office, and yeah, they do. They do want to take a picture with it, which I find so interesting.  But I have to say, it’s really awesome how people react to you getting an Emmy.  I had such a fabulous year of working, and it was such a great icing on the cake.  I love having it, and I love how I got it more than anything.  I love how it transpired.  It’s like something out of a fairy tale.

LOVE EILEEN! She’s so fabulous and it’s a pleasure to have her back on our screens at Y&R! Hope the writers give her a meaty story!! DIVA!

Go Eileen!!! I really do hope that she returns to Days next year, even if it’s just for a couple of months again. Kristen is her best character, not to mentions Days’ best character! It’s not a shock that the role won her an Emmy. Best to her!

I have watched Eileen on Y&R but it was when I started watching Days and seeing her as Kristen that I realized what a great actress she was. I am so sorry that she will be leaving Days, which got her an Emmy, to do the insipid part of Jack Abbott’s sister. WE WANT KRISTEN!

Marie…yep…the word ‘insipid’ is one way to describe Y&R’s Ashley…LOL. Marie…I wish that Eileen would PERMANENTLY STAY at DOOL because Kristen is WAY MORE INTERESTING than Ashley!!!!! Period.

Thanks Michael, awesome interview!

I cannot stop laughing at the facelift comment. OMG I’m seriously like crying laughing. That’s hilarious.

And as long as she comes back to Days again, I’m perfectly content with her coming and going. Kristen’s awesome. I can understand her concern about burnout and overuse. Let’s be honest, in many ways Stefano, Kate, Victor, and others all suffered from being on 24/7. EJ too. They become less imposing over time until it’s Stefano eating at the Brady pub (which has happened and was weird to see).

I will be tuning in to see her on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (if she’s on, which it’s pretty obvious she will be). Not a reality show person myself, b/c I find it very difficult to say “I like this person/I don’t like this person” since they are real people and not an actor playing a character. Scripted shows sort of free viewers from that, in my opinion.

I was so, so happy to see Susan again! Susan is my favourite of Eileen’s characters, and her return was wonderful. I love campy, over-the-top stuff, and Days is at its best when it is channeling the Jim Reilly era. I didn’t think Susan was really all that toned down at all. She was very much the same Susan I know and I love.
I also agree with Eileen’s thoughts on playing Kristen. I hate when villains end up “redeemed” or watered down. It happens when the actors have a multi-year contract and they need to keep the character around. Back in the 90s, Days managed to keep Stefano relevant and intense and frightening by having him go on the run or into hiding or presumed dead, all the while Joe Mascolo remained on the show by operating in the background. That worked then but they wouldn’t be getting their money’s worth from Eileen if they did that now. I like the idea of her coming back for short stints every once in a while where she’s driving the story.

I love Eileen Davidson as Ashley, always have (I don’t watch DOOL). I would love to see Ashley start kicking some major GC butt, especially Phyllis’! She was such a witch to Ashley when she welcomed Phyllis back from the hospital. Phyllis needs to be taken down like ten notches and Ashley is just the strong, classy female to do it! Phyllis has betrayed Jack so many times that I expect to see Ashley and Tracy keep Phyllis on her toes!

Lisa (the friend) who helped Eileen with the Kristen/Susan scenes, is she talking about Lisa Rinna (ex-Billie)?

No. I believe her name is Lisa Williams, and she is a stand-in actress.

I love having Ashley back. I would hope that she and Joe Clark hook up. I am not a fan of Stitch. I think Sean is a nice guy but he is way out of his league acting in the same scenes as Ashley, Victoria, Chelsea, Dylan, Victor and MBB. Everyone jumps all over Burgess and I know he replaced BM, a legend, but why not more out cry over Stitch?

Love Eileen…her Emmy win for DAYS was so deserved. I DO hope she comes back to DAYS again for small story-arcs…she is always welcomed there and Kristen DiMera is truly Eileen’s best role…it is her Emmy winning role after all.

I absolutely love Eileen Davidson! She is a great talent-not to mention gorgeous! Eileen is the reason that I started to tune in again to DOOL, in Winter-2013. After this short arc is up, I probably won’t tune in much, unless I am home. I love how she portrays Kristen-a bit evil, a temptress-with a tad bit of hurt and vulnerability. She has chemistry with practically everyone on the show. I absolutely love how she puts Theresa in her place! Theresa is no match for Kristen!

I love her as Ashley. She really didn’t come out right and say that she was not on or going on RHOBH. I saw a picture of her in an argument with Lisa Rinna from RHOBH . Of course it could be photo-shop but why her?

Loved seeing Susan back on DAYS and in scenes with her son EJ & her daughter-in-law Samantha! Eileen, James, & Alison all did a great job in their scenes together with EJ’s mom Susan. It was so cute and comical! Lots of fun! And loved Sami saying “Bye Mom…” to Susan! Years of waiting for things and scenes like that. And so glad that Samantha was the only other person that Susan got to have all of her scenes with! Besides Marlena and Kristen, also having the scenes with Susan. But wish Susan actually came through on her thoughts and plans and saved her son EJ, his wife and love of his life Samantha, and their children. Susan should have just had someone pack up their things and demanded that they move back to England with her or else. And wish we viewers could have seen Susan in scenes meeting and hanging out with her grandchildren Johnny & Sydney DiMera with their mommy Sami.

Loved finally having Susan there with Supercouple Ejami and coming to take them away and trying to save and protect them and their family. So, thanks to Eileen for playing Susan/EJ’s mom again. And LOVE scenes with Eileen and Alison Sweeney they do so great together and feed off each other so well. Think that deep down and on the surface Kristen really does like Sami and find her to be the right female DiMera for the family and its future by her brother’s side. And I think that Kristen respects Samantha’s fierceness, villain ways, and fiestyness and how she doesn’t put up with or take crap from anyone.

They all did such a great job in the Susan scenes together! It was so great and fun to finally see!

I’m pretty sure Susan has indeed saved her beloved Elvis. I believe in Eileen’s last episode, we’ll discover it was Susan disguised as Kristen who gave EJ the revival serum.

I believe you’re right. If Susan took the time to show up in Salem, worried that Elvis was in danger, she wouldn’t leave empty handed. She was able to fool Stefano and Kristen before and she did it again. Susan even told Kristen she would outsmart her again! This is fun!!!

Love Eileen, and I’m glad that she will be back on Days every so often. I really hope she’s back next year for the 50th anniversary. Hell, she might return to Days for good after she sees what kind of stories Chuck Pratt is going to write for Y&R.

They have really left the door open for Eileen to return to Days in the future. Young & Restless might not let her go now. Would be nice if 9 months later, we see a story with John Black, Brady and Shane Donovan returning to try to get that baby from “Kristen”. We might not see “Kristen” again for many years.

ED as Kristen is outstanding. I do agree her late-summer/fall run in 2014 wasn’t as fun as when they first brought her back in 2012. Although seeing as Susan and nailing the comedic timing was the highlight.

Hopefully Y&R will get Ashley right. Potential with her and Stitch. But I like the idea of her and Nick, the reactions from the other characters on the canvas would be gold (Victor, Nikki, Abby, Phyllis, etc.) Plus it sets up some future Abbot/Newman drama!

I would love to know your beauty secrets! I’m at the same age as you and can relate to your comments, ” It’s smoke and mirrors …” I really don’t know. Gravity is not a kind friend.” That is so true! I’m only a few years ahead of you and this is the year gravity has roared it’s ugly head. My kids say I look great but pictures taken during the holidays clearly reveal the truth. Any tips?

I love that Ashley back, on the Young & Restless

Is Kristen going to come back to DOOL because she never died????

DAYS and ‘Supernatural’ Alum Jensen Ackles Joins the Cast of Justin Hartley’s CBS Series ‘Tracker’

Look who’s joining Justin Hartley’s hit freshman drama, Tracker! None other than another soap alum, former Days of our Lives and Supernatural favorite Jensen Ackles.

In a reveal via Hartley’s Instagram on Thursday, Ackles is set to play Hartley’s on-screen brother on the CBS procedural drama. In Tracker, Colter Shaw is estranged from his brother, Russell, which has been a big part of the mystery of season one.

Ackles is best known for his long run as Dean Winchester in The CW’s Supernatural, a role he reprised in the prequel of the series The Winchesters. He also recently starred in ABC’s Big Sky as Sheriff Beau Arlen and in The Boys as Soldier Boy.

Jensen was the original Eric Brady on Days of our Lives, a role he played from 1997-2000, before departing for the world of primetime and film.  Eric was in love with Nicole played by Arianne Zucker. The part of Eric was recast with Greg Vaughan taking over the role in 2012.

In his Instagram post, Justin thanked everyone for watching Tracker, and then revealed Ackles as the surprise casting announcement in the role of Russell, while Jensen was playing pinball in the video! No word yet on when Jensen’s first episode as Russell will air. Stay tuned.

Wally Kurth Talks on His DAYS Daytime Emmy Nomination, His Emotional Scenes, and Remembering John Aniston

During our 2023 year-end honors at Michael Fairman TV, we named Wally Kurth as our pick for Best Overall Performance by an Actor for his double-turn as both Ned Quartermaine on General Hospital and as Justin Kiriakis on Days of our Lives. So, it was absolutely no surprise to us that Wally landed a Daytime Emmy nomination for his riveting work as a grieving Justin in the Supporting Actor category for the upcoming 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

On DAYS, Justin had been put through the emotional wringer, of first, losing his beloved Uncle Vic, played by the late John Aniston, and then finding out that Victor was the supposed biological father to Justin’s son, Alex (Rob Scott Wilson). If you didn’t reach for the hankies during some of Kurth’s work in these scenes, we don’t know what will make you do so.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Wally to get his reaction to his fourth Daytime Emmy nomination in the last six years. Kurth was nominated in the Supporting category in 2018, 2020 and now 2024 and Lead Actor in 2021.

In addition, Wally shares what scenes were on his nominated reel, how John Aniston impacted his work, how he has changed as an actor over the years with a new outlook, and being the only actor out there with two long-running roles on two long-running soaps, and much more. Here’s what Wally had to share below.

Congratulations on your well-deserved nomination. You decided to submit yourself this year for Emmy contention in both Lead Actor for GH and Supporting Actor at DAYS, correct?

WALLY: I did. I thought the DAYS reel was a little more dramatic, much more emotional. I had thought with the way the judging goes that it might be a little bit more, winnable, if you will. I enjoyed and was proud of my work at General Hospital, so it’s all good. I’m thrilled. It’s always nice to be nominated.

Photo: JPI

What scenes did you ultimately choose for your Supporting Actor reel?

WALLY: I started chronologically, as always, trying to tell a little bit of a story. I actually started with a scene where Justin has to tell Maggie (Suzanne Rogers) that Victor’s (the late John Aniston) plane went down and it was not found. Then, the scene with Bonnie (Judi Evans) where I sort of have to let it all out, and grieve the loss of this man who was practically Justin’s father, but it was his Uncle Vic. We have a little scene talking about Victor, and then there is a short snippet at the funeral where Justin eulogizes Victor. Next, we jump to scene where Justin discovers the letter where Angelica admits that indeed Victor is Alex’s father (Rob Scott Wilson). So then, Justin has to tell Alex, and then I also sort of grieve the fact that I’m no longer his father. Justin basically lost his son. It was very dramatic and very emotional. I was guessing the judges would be like, “Hey! Enough with the crying! Stop, you big baby!” But, they didn’t. They must have thought that it was convincing enough that it felt really truthful at how Justin was upset about these two unfortunate realizations.

You bring up a really good point. I talk to actors all the time about crying on Emmy reels. Sometimes, many feel it might put voters off. But obviously, this time it worked well for you!

WALLY:  What I liked about the crying scenes was that, like in real life, you’re not crying all the time when something bad is happening, right? I think crying happens and it takes you off guard. It happens without you realizing it. These were all moments when Justin was alone, really. Bonnie comes in the room where Justin is just kind of like dealing with it. And then her coming in, opens up Justin and she is there to hold him. I think that often happens in real life. I thought that was correct for the writers to do that, you know, that Justin would break down when he was alone.

Photo: JPI

Did you feel the pressure of wanting to get these scenes when Victor died and at his memorial, just right due to the enormity to it, and to do justice for John Aniston?

WALLY: I allowed myself to use my heartbreak over John Aniston. I loved him. I just sort of allowed his presence for me in the scenes. It was sweet. It was good for me. I’m just thinking about it now and I feel teary-eyed. John was such a sweet man. He led by example, and he really did teach me how to be a professional actor, and he was a mentor. He never told me anything specific, but he was just John, and in the scenes, this was the time for me tell him how I feel.

Photo: JPI

Then, you had the heartbreaking scenes with Rob Scott Wilson where Justin tells Alex he is not his father!

WALLY:  I thought that was just really challenging material. As I get older, I just trust the material, and don’t get ahead of myself. I trust myself with the emotion. Just let it happen if it happens. When I first read it, I kind of imagined what it could look like and then you just let it unfold from there.

You’ve got Robert Gossett (Marshall, GH), A Martinez (Nardo, The Bay), Mike Manning (Caleb, The Bay), and Bryton James (Devon, Y&R) all in your category. Robert has won two Daytime Emmys in a row, last year for Supporting Actor and the year before for Guest Performer.

WALLY:  l love Robert. I worked with the character Marshall on General Hospital, and we had so much fun. He’s a great guy and a really good actor. A Martinez is the best guy ever. I have such admiration for him. Whenever I see him, we always really connect and to be in included with him is great. Bryton James, I don’t know, but I know he beat me in this category in 2020. Mike Manning, I didn’t get the opportunity to know when he was at DAYS as he weren’t in scenes together, but I hear good things about him, too.

Photo: JPI

When you are judging Emmy reels, what do you look for when you’re voting on a performance?

WALLY: That’s a really great question. And because let’s face it, there’s just a lot of terrific talent in daytime. This year, I judged two categories. I don’t just go with, “Okay, who’s crying the most.” I really try to go with the one who’s touches me the most, who surprises me and moves me. And so, if you go with that, you’re probably going in the right direction. I also think that upfront you do need to kind of give them something in the first couple minutes that shows you know what you’re doing and don’t make it too repetitive.

Who did you first tell you were nominated?

WALLY: My manager, Michael Bruno called me. I was in Chicago with my daughters having a late breakfast and I knew the nominations were going to happen around 11 am Chicago time. I didn’t tell my daughters about what was happening, just in case, I didn’t get nominated. So, when Michael called, I went, “Oh, boy!” I told my daughters who were sitting at the table with me. So, they were the first two people that I could tell, and that was really nice.  We had champagne which was really funny because I bought three little glasses of champagne, and as soon as I bought it, we toasted. They said, “We don’t really like champagne.” So, I ended up drinking all three glasses. (Laughs)

Photo: JPI

What do you think of Eric Martsolf (Brady), your Day Players Band member, and DAYS co-star getting a Lead Actor nomination?

WALLY: I remember, I was like talking to him and I was like, “Eric, are you going to submit yourself?” And he is like, “I don’t know. I don’t really have anything …” And the next thing you know, he’s nominated. I’m like, “Wow! I guess he found something!” (Laughs) I love Eric. I have such respect for him and his gift, and he works really hard. So, I was very happy for him. I’m glad we weren’t in the same category, however.

How many years now have you been playing Justin on DAYS?

WALLY: I started here 37 years ago in 1987. I was there for four years and then I left. Then, 18 years later, Ken Corday (EP, DAYS) invited me back in 2009 and I’ve been on the show now for 15 years. So, I guess a total of 20 years on and off over the last 37 years. Everyone remembers 1987-1991 … those were big, big years for Justin and Adrienne who back then were a supercouple.

Photo: JPI

Have you determined who you would thank in your acceptance speech if you win this year’s Supporting Actor Daytime Emmy?

WALLY: I feel like this year I kind of have an idea of what I would say. I think I can remember all of that without writing it down. If I had gotten nominated for both shows, I was definitely going to point out and thank the powers-that-be for giving me dual citizenship and how much I appreciate that. I do think that being on both soaps, I will go to my grave believing that it’s made me a better actor. In fact, since I’ve been doing both shows, I’ve been nominated for Daytime Emmys. I’ve become a better actor. I feel like maybe it’s just that I’ve gotten older and wiser, but I feel as though when I go in there to work, I’m really focused and I’m really prepared. I know I pretty much get one shot to get it. We’re in the business of “one takes” now in the soaps.

People are so lucky to even have one enduring role in their careers, but you’ve been able to have two, and they’re completely separate characters on two legacy shows; one which just turned 61, General Hospital, and the other Days of our Lives which will soon celebrate 60 years, as well.

WALLY: I didn’t plan on it. I must have done something right. Back in 2009, Ken called me up and invited me back to DAYS. I really jumped in. I’d been out of work for four or five years. I went back with a whole new attitude about the work, about the genre.  In 2004, when I left General Hospital, I was kind of burnt out. Looking back on it, I didn’t have a good attitude and I was just done. I was kind of tired. New writers come in and sometimes, when you have new writers that look at your character differently, it can be very difficult, because you just know that their passion is not with your character. However, in this case, I’m like, “I’m going to take whatever the writers give me and do the best I can and do my job. Let the writers do their job.” I think the writers also know that I really respect them and I’m not going to complain. I’m not going to tell them what to do and I’m going to stay out of it. They have enough to work out. They have enough to do. I’m going to be the problem solver, not the problem creator. There are enough problem creators. Believe me when I tell you that every time I leave those sets, I’m like, “Thank you. I love it.  See you the next time I see you.” I know how lucky I am to do both shows and to have this opportunity to act at my age and still be sent scripts. I love the art of acting. I’d do it for free. The fact that they’re paying me and I am able to do this and work with these great, wonderful, talented actors every day, it’s kind of mind-blowing.

So, will you be rooting for Wally to take home the gold in this year’s Outstanding Supporting Actor in Daytime Drama Series at the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards on June 7th live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+? Lisa Rinna Would Be Down to Reprise Her Role of Taylor McBride in ‘Melrose Place’ Reboot

When Lisa Rinna departed her popular role of Billie Reed on Days of our Lives back in 1995, her next major role would be a jump to primetime and the soapy Melrose Place.

In 1996, Lisa was introduced as new character Taylor McBride and stayed with the Fox young adult sudser for three seasons. Now in 2024, with the recent reveal that a Melrose Place revival is the works with Heather Locklear, Daphne Zuniga and Laura Leighton all on board to reprise their signature roles, would Rinna board the project should it come to fruition?

Speaking with PEOPLE, Rinna expressed, “Well, gosh, I’ve heard about it. I haven’t been approached or anything, but I would love to see what Taylor McBride is up to 25 years later. Wouldn’t that be something?”

Photo: FOX

OG Melrose Place fans know that in story, Taylor moved to the Melrose Place apartment building with her husband Kyle played by Rob Estes. However, Taylor had her eye on Dr. Peter Burns played by former GH star Jack Wagner (ex-Frisco). But, by the time she had moved to the apartment complex, Peter had married tough as nails ad executive, Amanda Woodward, played by Heather Locklear.

Recalling her time on Melrose Place, Rinna added that it, “was one of my greatest and most fun acting experiences, playing Taylor and working with Heather and the whole crew.”  Rinna also noted, “So if they need a Taylor McBride appearance, they know who to call. I’m around.”

The new Melrose Place is in development at CBS Studios. In the premise of the reboot, the Melrose Place residents reunite after the death of one of their friends, “but the pressure cooker of a reunion soon uncovers old traumas, rekindles old romances, reignites old resentments, and reveals new secrets… throwing our characters into chaotic drama that’s reminiscent of the past, but with a much more modern perspective.”

So, would you want to see Lisa Rinna reprise her Melrose Place role as Taylor McBride? Comment below.
