THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS: Ashley, "One Good Thing … Daddy Died Believing I Was His Daughter"

By Michael Fairman

On Friday’s The Young and the Restless, the long held secret that has spanned decades is finally out in the open.  Ashley Abbott (Eileen Davidson) is not the biological daughter of the late and beloved John Abbott (Jerry Douglas).  No, that honor would go to Brent Davis, the man that Dina Mergeron, Ashley’s mother, had an affair with years ago.

In the key episode. as Ashley is named Innovator of the Year in the cosmetics world, she takes the opportunity to out Graham (Max Shippee), who has been infiltrating the Abbotts, and Dina’s confidence, as part of a revenge plot against Ashley and her mom.  Turns out … Graham’s stepfather was Brent Davis, and in a emotional exchange at the Top of the Tower festivities for Ashley, Dina blurts out that Brent Davis is Ashley’s biological daughter – a secret she promised she would never reveal, and Ashley begged her not to ever tell.

Now expose, Graham toasts Ashley in a despicable manner rubbing in to her face that she is not a true Abbott.  As the room is cleared to try to give some time for Ashley and Dina to talk, things get worse when Dina becomes overwrought for what she has done.  Later, she goes to her suite at the GCAC where Jack (Peter Bergman) tells her that what she said tonight will change Ashley’s world forever, and to stay away from Graham, and to not let him near her fortune and her will.  Graham overhears the conversation outside the door.

Later, when Jack returns to the Abbotts, an emotional Ashley is trying to recover from the evenings revelations.  Traci (Beth Maitland) and Abby (Melissa Ordway) still are confused as to what went down.  They later overhear Jack and Ashley talking where Ashley says to her brother, “One good thing, daddy died believing I was his daughter.”  Traci and Abby look on shocked!  Back at Dina’s suite, Graham lures Dina into an argument where she passes out in need of medical attention.  Instead of calling for help on his cell, he stands there looking vengeful.

Kudos go in this episode to Eileen Davidson, who brought the emotion along with Ashley’s usually tough veneer.  Next week, the Abbott drama continues.

Watch the final moments of Friday’s cliffhanger below. Then let us know, what you thought of the scenes featuring Eileen Davidson, Marla Adams, Peter Bergman and Max Shippee in the comment section below!

Eileen Davidson was magic. Marla Davis, althought a tad odd was so amazing in her scenes. People trash Y&R on other soap sites but let me say this: Y&R always goes for class even when it is the most dramatic. It is a sign of good writing. It a sign of good acting. Most of all it’s a sign that Y&R has a reason it’s number one. I am really digging the way the show is pacing and the way it is telling it’s stories. BRAVO!!

I loved it too, Mateo. I agree with your every word.
Thank you.

I agree with you Mateo. Friday’s episode was excellent. I wonder if they are going to leave Dina for dead? My only hope is that they give Gloria a nice meaty story. I said it before and I will say it again. She is much to good to be getting cameo roles as Jack’s secretary. And on a side note, could there be a Victoria Matao relationship in the works. That would prove to be interesting. But I really don’t think he would betray Ashley like that. Or would he? Time will tell I guess.

I hope Ravi isn’t wasted on Victoria, although Show seems to be waffling on him and Ashley. Victoria will abandon him in a heartbeat for the buttbiscuit called Billy, anyway.

Ravi is a gem! I don’t see him with Ashley or Victoria.
This might be an unpopular opinion, but bring back Summer and pair her up with Ravi. I didn’t mind Hunter King the way a lot of viewers did but if she is not available, re cast!

YOu’re right on the money, the show and most the actors are pretty good. Marla Adams is so good I wish she would stay around forever.

Loved it and this is what Sally Sussman wrote which I love and how this all unfolded…The only thing that would of made it better if we had the classic background music along with this drama, sorry I couldn’t help myself…I actually feel so bad for Ashley and Dina and I hope Graham get’s what he deserves…

Please bring back the original background music !!!!!

Oh George, I so wish they would but for some reason TPTB is not listening.
BTW, THANKS so much for your support

The Graham and Ashley’s reveal story is way better than the boring Jason return..
read ^^^ again ……. heh one more time!

I was cheering Graham on, waiting for him to take down Ashley (she is such a snotty bitch)..
Poor Dina 🙁 but she will be fine she has bitch in her too and they are survivors.
And now we finally get some suds in our soap and bubbles to pop..
That was soap at its best..
Y&R needed that story because the rest of it is really lame and boring.

Here’s to Ashley crying me a river and a score one for Graham !! 🙂
I’m going to enjoy it until Graham gets the boot and Ashley struts her bitch, again..
Graham needs to stay on and go to Brash and Sassy help bring Jack/the Abbots down he is business qualified to do so.
But not Tracy.. I really like Tracy and she is off limits!

Well, I enjoyed Graham doing his thing and into what’s next with it all..

((as for Jason’s return wake me if something of interesting or exciting happens))

su0000…EXACTLY!!!!! Ashley’s high and mighty, overly moral and self-righteous attitude has ALWAYS bugged the hell out of me. TEAM GRAHAM ALL THE WAY!!!!!

Later.

hey jaybird ..
I need me some bad guys and Graham, well I like him !
GO GRAHAM !!
I hope he gets the upper hand and Ashley gets her royal arse handed to her.
The bad guys need to win, too 😉
All the sugary love, peace and godly charaters that’s wanted makes my brain bleed ahaa!

It’s the bad guys that put the soap drama in a soap..
they need to be paid homage for bringing the excitement..

su0000…EXACTLY!!!!! THE BAD GUYS on a soap are WAY MORE INTRIGUING…PERIOD!!!!!

Later.

Ho Hum………

“…One good thing, daddy died believing I was his daughter.”  ”

Thank the serial god. the relationship between John Abbott and his eldest daughter… priceless

“Traci and Abby look on shocked! ”

this is where I hope it doesn’t run amok; wild with abandon

I expect this from the dullard nuMANs please.

the bond between the Abbott siblings are so much more interesting , vital, and relatable… that this is not what the show direction should ever be

let the gutter sniping – spiral continue with Victor and Nikki… so much more fun to LOL

Patrick, THANK YOU for the compliment regarding the 3 beauties, Lori, Ashley and Cassandra…all 3 classy ladies played wonderfully by Jaime Lyn Bauer, Eileen Davidson and Nina Arvesen.

I have to agree that Y&R has finally returned to its pre-2006 Form. I hope Mal builds on the momentum. Y&R’s core audience has always appreciated the melodramatic, slow-moving pace of character-driven drama punctuated by major dramatic events organically placed to continue mining the show’s rich history and utilizing a stable cast of cross-generational characters who are like family to many of us. If you want action or quickly paced head spinning plots, Y&R isn’t for you, at least not in its current form, which is what millions of us have wanted back for a decade now. Some things are just fine. Winning formulas don’t need to be fixed. Y&R lost its identity when a careless string of executive producers and head writers imposed their own visions on Y&R, instead of letting the organic evolution of this show guide them. The characters would have guided the show had the show headers respected the legacy left to them by Bill Bell, Ed Scott, Kay Alden, Jack Smith, etc.

Now we pick up the Brent/Dina/Ashley story again in traditional Bill Bell fashion of storing drama in the “vault” until a logical opportunity presents itself to resurrect some long kept secret. The drama would be much more impactful had a misguided show runner had not so irresponsibly killed off John and dismantled the Abbott family. Still, this reveal opens up many new story opportunities. How will Tracy react now that the big sister she never measured up to, John Abbott’s “Beauty” and the apple of his eye, was not only not his daughter but Ashley, Dina and Jack kept it a secret from her for 30 years? Tracy has always had an inferiority complex and was insecure to the point of drug addiction and attempting suicide. How will Billy react once it sinks in? Will he act ruthlessly, like Jack did back in the day and use it as a weapon to keep Ashley from power over the family business? What will Jill do? Will she return to vindictive form and encourage Billy to claim his birthright from sanctimonious Ashley? Will Dina finally make peace with her past demons and finally have an unawkward relationship with the children she abandoned when they were still kids? Finally, how will Ashley cope this time, especially if Abby is angry about being lied to. Will Ashley keep it together, or will she battle another emotional breakdown that renders her out of touch with reality?

Guys and Gals: This is classic Y&R. The acting by all was golden. The writing didn’t rewrite history and respected the intelligence of us original viewers with some skewed unbelievable timeline. Now that Dina will be unconscious for the foreseeable future, spiteful Grant will have some more time to taunt Ashley and punish her for being the bio-daughter of the only father he knew. It may be a long time until Dina wakes up and remembers everything. Until then, enjoy the human stories of the Abbotts and how they cope with this long held secret. The writers better not mess it up. There’s a lot to work with here. The talented artists who portray the Abbotts certainly won’t disappoint.

Here’s to Eileen Davidson, Beth Maitland, Marla Adams and Peter Bergman for giving a second life to this heart wrenching story. The late Terry Lester’s Jack tortured Ashley by blackmailing her. It’s beautiful to see how he has grown and become protective of Ashley since those days. SO I include Peter in that quartet of uber talented veterans because he makes us forget he wasn’t Jack when this story was originally told.

Finally, CONGRATULATIONS to Y&R for 39 years at #1. It wasn’t always at its best, especially from 2005-2016, but it’s always been the BEST.

AND all the BEST to you all, my fellow Y&R followers…….

Bravo, Scot!
One question, did Traci really develop a drug addiction?
I know she developed an eating disorder, bulimia I think it was. She kept a stash of candy bars in her closet when she was a teen and would binge and purge.
I don’t see John Abbott as the hero every one else does. Doting on Ashely and calling her ‘my beauty” while not having a similar pet name for Traci was just downright cruel. It also shows that this patriarch was more concerned with the outside rather than what it is inside. I hope they explore this further.

Tracy got addicted to diet pills when she was in love with Danny Romalotti and Lauren was making remarks about her weight. Tracy wrecked her car while on the pills and I think she suffered some heart damage as well.

Scot, so beautifully written and I am so with you on all you said…I pray that Mal Young keeps the character written stories going…

dag, Kevin C – always on track

Eileen Davidson – Ashley
Jaime Lyn Bauer – Lori
Nina Arvesen – Cassandra

NICE – these (3) bevy of beauty … acted all over …

when a woman.. outside of her looks.. has that extra something.. that smolders at their behest

oh so fine telee

love love love these ladies

Thank you, Alan. I didn’t know that about Traci. (the diet pills addiction).

amen Scot!
i haven’t been this obsessed with y n r in years!
thank you to the writers who finaaalllllllllyyyyy gave the mega talented Eileen Davidson something worthy to do on Y n R after years of support playing
Ashley imo hasn’t had anything this exciting since Adam caused her miscarriage and the baby switch with Sharon
PLLLLSSSSS continue to milk this storys fallout …maybe another breakdown?, Victor can lend emotional support, the Abby angle…as long as Ashley my favorite y n r heroine stays front and centre!

Damien, I agree with you again and Ashley has been my favorite since Jaime Lyn Bauer as Lori Brooks and Nina Arvesen as Cassandra Rawlins…These 3 beauties have always been my favorites along with Sharon Case…I did love Brenda Dickson as Jill…

Agreed. Damien, you speak for me….Eileen deserved this emotional scene and so much more.
I am so into Y&R…..I feel like I have my soap back….except, among others, which I will not mention, LOL; get rid of Jordan. What a jerk!! What a loser!! Goes back to sniffing Hilary’s skirts after Lily’s rejection?.
I said it from the get go, as I did of Zack and Graham, Jordan is not a good dude…wants something. The PTB don’t know what yet.

LOVE your critique on all points! My only wish is that they would have thought to protect Dina more from Graham after the event. They were so caught up in Ashley’s drama, they kind of forgot about the guy who just admitted that he was exacting revenge (for over a year) on the 79-year old, but still formidable, Dina and was very aggressive with her at the event–he even has a key to her suite!!

I greatly appreciate this and all your posts. I have come to love Y&R again, especially because of the Abbott story line (and the resurrection of Sharon as a viable character). The last 10 months have not been perfect and I am sure Mr. Young will shore up some of the year’s odd plot notes (Victoria’s headaches and odd behavior) and lost-their-way stories (Juliette’s baby, anything with Reed) and find some focus on characters I want to see more of (Michael and Lauren, Paul). So glad to spend time in Genoa City again.

I wasn’t watching in early days, and am now wondering how Dina is certain that John Abbott is not Ashley’s father. Do you know? Thank you.

But Kay Alden booted just because no one has any patience anymore. I don’t think Mal will be able to mine history well going forward because Bell and Alden are the ones who not just wrote these characters to earn a living but loved their characters. I want to tell Ms Alden I’m so sorry you were disrespected by being let go. I saw your influence but mostly I felt it. It was like finding myself in a warm and comforting space in a coldly indifferent world. Once again reminded only $$$$$ matters to most.

I so agree April, hated what happened to Kay Alden and Sally Sussman…We all shall see what happens with Mal Young as headwriter…

I agree! I met Kay Alden while she was at a typewriter at Bill Bell’s home, churning out a half-hour episode of the show. She was so kind to me, and it was abundantly clear she loved what she was doing!

Graham is not a Davis. On Thursday it came out that he is a stepson, therefore no relation to Ashley. It’s still a great soapy story tho!!

Maybe Dina is testing Graham the way GH’s Edward tested Tracy with a fake heart attack years ago…Dina only pretended to pass out to test Graham’s loyalty???

Oh I hope so, Jim.

The only fly in the ointment is the actor playing Graham. He’s a good looking guy but he’s not really a very good actor. He might as well have been reading off the menu in the big reveal scenes. Luckily, we had Ashley and Jack and Dina to really punch it up.

Spot on!

It should have been a OMG moment it wasn’t ! The actor who plays Graham is weak at best

All it did for me was tell me that John Abbott never should have left the cast LML was stupid

k/kay, LML destroyed Y&R and a couple of other head writers….that’s why I was so excited with Sally Sussman and Kay Alden returned and again I hope Mal Young keeps Y&R with character driven stories along with some mystery and suspense…

Although dramatic it was a bit anticlimatic– in this day and age would anyone really care that Ashley isn’t John’s Abbotts bio daughter? The only one it truly affects now is Abby who has to deal with the notion she is not an Abbott by blood- otherwise who will care– this notion this a big secret to be ashamed about is about 15 to 20 years too late

For years, I’ve wondered why each episode of Y&R ends with brief clips of the next episode (“Next on the Young and the Restless…….”). The clips don’t really “tease” the viewer about what may happen but, instead, often reveal too much. I think this cuts down on a viewer’s interest. I strongly think the show should reconsider showing the brief clips of the next episode and end the practice: End the episode with the final scene and cut to the credits.

Friday’s episode is a prime example about why Y&R should dump the next episode clips. On Friday, the last scene shows Diana has collapsed on the floor. Graham stops his immediate reaction to call for help and pauses to look at her. The episode ends on a cliffhanger: What is Graham going to do? Will he summon help for Diana? Will he leave the stricken woman on the floor, hoping that she will die before she can revise her will to remove him as a beneficiary. I thought it was a good ending. Inanely, the next episode clip shows someone hanging a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the exterior of a hotel room door. The two-second clip gives the viewer only one conclusion: Graham didn’t call for help but, instead, exited the room with an ill Dina on the floor. The clip completely destroyed the end of Friday’s episode. A really, really, dumb production decision.

I disagree. I like the “on the next episode of Y&R” previews. I thought the preview of Graham putting the DND sign up added to the drama.

I think Dina will survive but be in a coma and Graham will have her sent back to Paris since he probably has power of attorney in the event of a medical crisis. Dina will recover and kill Graham but not remember it because her big secret is that she is suffering from the early onset of dementia. Ashley will be blamed and Dina will regain some of the memories and confess in court to clear her daughter.

Then again I could be way off base…

Great episode that made me wanting more story! I cannot wait to see how this unfolds Monday and throughout the week. I thought it was absolutely priceless the way Graham’s eyes told us what was on his mind in that pivotal last moment: that was quality!

I also recall Graham making a side comment about John Abbott not being so perfect, something to that effect. It made me wonder then: Could John Abbott have had an affair and produced a child he never knew about? (That’s typical Y and R: Kay Chancellor, Sharon, are two examples.) So, I remembered when Liz Foster finally told Jill that she wasn’t her real mother– that was a great bombshell. Now, what if Graham turns out to be John Abbott’s son? Will the writers go there?

It would make more sense if Graham was John’s bio son. The depth of Graham’s resentment against Dina and Ashley seems lame since neither are responsible for his step father being a jerk leaving his family in lurch–but if he is John’s son I could see the need for revenge, to get a piece of what should be his- and it would give this story line the punch it needs to make it a classic

Oh my gosh what a great story on Friday. I hope they sign Dena to a contract and don’t kill her off. She is a great actress and it would be nice to see the Abbots reunite with her again. So nice to see Tracey back again. I wish we could keep her here permanently. I’d also like to see them give Gloria a bigger roll she is a great actress.

WELL SAID….LOVING THE GREAT STORY AND WANT MUCH MORE OF DENA,TRACI AND THE ABBOTTS!!!!!

True, true, and true, Nikki. I loved Friday’s episode. I wonder what Graham’s fate is. Will he stay on? Hmmm.

I hope they haven’t killed Dina off. First, she & Ashley need true closure. Second, I love her barbs.

I think someone is going to knock Graham off, leading to a whodunnit. My bet if this happens, it will be Ashley who is accused. My

I am/was so confused by where this plot was going and especially its outcome since I thought everyone knew about Ashley’s parentage including John. Is there some sort of revisionist history here? There is a same character by the name as Mateo as a Mateo arrives on the B and B. I disagree – GH is way better even as convoluted as it is right now and I stopped watching the Y and R when it was too much Chelsea/Nick and not enough of Chloe Kevin and the hot doctor who held her hostage – that paralled with this storyline would have been good. Even Days I am watching more of, but right now I have to hand it to GH and B and B.

No, not many people knew Ashley was the result of an affair. Ashley didn’t even know until she was an adult. Dina, Ashley, Jack, and Victor knew. Well, I guess Brent Davis knew too.

I hope Dana stays: to see her kick Graham’s a.., Y&R need reps in that age group, and enough of the Newman money woes

amen!!!!

Here is the problem with the climax, it was a dud. Only because Graham is not Brent’s kid, connecting Graham and Ashley. Why did they go this route? I think because the actor who plays Graham is too weak. Being Ashley’s stepbrother would be front burner and this actor is not front burner. He has gotten more comfortable but his big reveal was anti-climatic! The other reason to make Graham not be related to Ashley is he will be killed off. Myrna will do it and Dina, Jack and Ashley will be prime suspects for the foreseeable future until the truth is revealed.

You mean Marla?

I’m also surprised they didn’t make Graham Brent’s bio son. I don’t know all the history of Brent Davis. Was he married when he and Dina hooked up?

Graham was fine when he did little stuff in scenes, but he does need to brush up on some acting to stand alongside Ashley, Marla, and Jack in scenes.

Not Marla, I did mean Myrna. I think that is Graham’s mothers name in that retirement home. She will be mad at Graham for not carrying through with the plans they had and will kill him and set up one of the the three Abbotts for murder. Probably Ashley.

Dina had an affair with Brent so I would think she was still married to John. That was a long time ago!

Yeah, any actor would struggle against those three powerhouses!

Mo, I asked my grandmother……all of it happend behind the scenes, even before the Abbotts were introduced to Genoa City.
The family’s story begins sans Dina, who by this time, married a French tycoon; ergo Mergeron.
My grandmother is 77, with a sharp memory, but as anyone else, she does forget some instances and situations. I forget what I did yesterday! LOL.
Dina returned to GC in the early eighties where Ashley found out John was not her bio dad. Gran says only a few knew the truth, but not John. She said Victor and Kathetine knew, but can’t remember if anyone else did.
So, nothing is really known prior to Davis’ return, and dying of cancer? Gran thinks it was cancer.
Oh, yeah…he was also involved with Katherine Chancellor.

PS.
What makes me wonder about this story, is why Graham and his mother did not go after Katherine. She had Davis living in her house, at one point.
Graham could have ‘sacked’ Katharine years ago, before her death, intead of going all the way to France.
No logic. Why blame Dina or anyone, really……if his stepfather could not keep ‘it’ at bay.
If it were not Dina, it would have been someone else.
I suppose the Abbotts are prominent right now….sooooo

Thanks for the info Celia. I guess they are kinda making stuff up as they go along.

I forgot about Myrna. Well, Myrna has gotten her revenge although I guess Graham should have streamed it so Myrna could have really enjoyed it.

I wonder why Ashley went to GC Buzz.

Yes, isn’t that a big question? Why was it necessary for Ashley to be seen somewhere else (almost like an alibi.) She didn’t even seem to know why she was there herself.

I think she wanted to see if the story would hit the screen? Just a guess.

Sad to see Ashley’s secret out. Dina is confused. She needs to get the locks changed. Well, she’s on the floor now so she has other pressing matters. I do think Graham’s acting was a little weak. I don’t know why Ashley wanted to make a scene. I think Abby will need counseling.

Best Ashley quote from thiis Friday’s show… Ashley to Graham at the party…

“I’m through humoring this sycophant!”

LOL! Love the writing in this show! What a treasure!! 🙂

Hate Abby and Scott together. Enough of Sharon being hurt. If Scott and Abby are going to be written as a couple, let them ride into the sunset right off the Y & R canvas !!!

Christel Khalil Reveals She Almost Quit Acting After ‘That’s So Raven’ Audition, But Then Came ‘The Young and the Restless’

Published

The Young and the Restless fan favorite, Christel Khalil (Lily Winters) is the special guest on this week’s edition of Soapy Hosted by Rebecca Budig and Greg Rikaart which dropped today on Tuesday, June 23rd.

During the interview with Rebecca and Greg, Khalil who had played Lily Winters on-screen since August of 2002, nearly 24 years with the CBS soap, shared how early on her teenage acting career, she was ready to call it quits in show business, after a heartbreaking audition for the lead of a new Disney Channel sitcom, which later turned out to be the hit seres, That’s So Raven, starring Raven-Symoné which ran for four seasons from 2003-2007.

Christel recalled what happened. “I was 14 and I had always auditioned for all these Disney projects. So I auditioned for That’s So Raven, it was between me and Raven-Symoné and it was called at the time Absolutely Psychic,” explained Khalil. “The character was this girl who had psychic ability, but then when Raven got the role, they named the title of the show after her.”

Photo: CBS

HOW A BROTHERLY TALK CHANGED THE COURSE OF CHRISTEL’S CAREER

Reliving the disappointment to Greg and Rebecca, Christel explained, “I lost that part and I was just so devastated, because for the network call there were 20 people in the room watching me, and I just have always had such performance anxiety. I just completely bombed the audition and it was terrible. So, I was just devastated. I was actually going to quit acting and then I got the final call for The Young and The Restless and I wasn’t going to go.”

It was Khalil’s brother, who actually got her to reconsider, and if he hadn’t, we would not have our Lily Winters in Genoa City! Christel recounted, “I was like, ‘You know what? I’m done. I don’t want to do this anymore. I’m just going to hang out with my friends.’ I was just devastated. My brother, who is seven years older than me, and he had quit acting at the same age that I was at that time. He said to me, ‘I promise you, I actually really regret quitting. Just go on this audition and if you don’t get it, you can quit.'”

Christel’s screen-test for the role of Lily was actually with the late, great, Kristoff St. John who would play her father Neil (Later it was revealed to Lily, that Neil’s brother, Malcolm Winters was her bio-dad).

Photo: CBS

ACTING WAS EASY WITH THE LATE KRISTOFF ST. JOHN

“So, I went (to test for Lily) and I remember the screen-test was with Kristoff St. John. It was just so easy to act with him because he’s just so there. I remember just being on set, and that was my first time there for a screen-test where you were actually on set. I had never experienced that before. It was my first time being with an actor and  having makeup done, which just helps you really be able to do your best work.”

Recalling the screen-test with the St. John, Khalil, “It was where I had to be emotional ( in the scene) and I always had issues being emotional at auditions. But I was there with him, it just came, and it happened. It was natural and I felt so good and it was amazing. It stands out in my mind a lot.”

You can check out the full Soapy conversation with Christel Khalil where she also discusses juggling motherhood, marital life, and the demands of soap operas.

Fan can listen to weekly episodes of Soapy on Audacy or wherever podcasts are available, and can watch full video episodes weekly on the CBS =Brand YouTube Channel. Whether a lifelong fan or discovering the genre for the first time, SOAPY offers a fresh, fun behind-the-scenes look at the stories – and storytellers – that define daytime drama.

Now let us know, over the years what had been your favorite Lily Winters story on Y&R as played by Christel Khalil? What did you think of of Christell’s recollection where she was up for the lead of “That’s So Raven” as a teenager, before it was even titled that? Let us know via the comment section.

Deidre Hall Marks 50 Years as ‘Days of Our Lives’ Dr. Marlena Evans

Published

on

By

If you have ever tuned-in to the soap opera genre over the last 50 years, and witnessed some of the greatest romances, drama, classic and outlandish storylines of all-time, you would have seen Deidre Hall smack dab in the middle of it as longtime Salem heroine, Dr. Marlena Evans.

It was 50 years on this date, June 21, 1976 that Hall first appeared on DAYS on NBC which was its home for 57 years before it moved to its current streaming platform on Peacock in September of 2022.

In Hall’s first episode she was introduced as a psychiatrist treating Mickey Horton (John Clarke) at Bayview Sanitarium after he suffered a complete mental breakdown. Mickey learned that his brother Bill Horton (Edward Mallory) was the biological son of Mike Horton (Wesley Eure) with his wife Laura (Susan Flannery) and that he had been lied to for years and years. From that moment on, the rest is television and soap opera history. Days of Our Lives put Hall front and center.

Photo: NBC

There were so many heartbreaking and shocking story twists involving the beloved Marlena. One of the first was the historic crib death of baby DJ (Don Jr.) in 1980, Marlena’s infant son with Don Craig (Jed Allan). The story had never been told on daytime television and Hall’s performances received accolades from TV critics to fans when Deidre received thousands of letters from grieving mothers who had gone through the same thing in their own lives.

DAYS also brought Deidre’s twin sister, Andrea Hall Lovell to the show as her on-screen sister Samantha, who had a grudge and even locked Marlena up in a sanitarium and took her place! Fast-forward and in 1982, DAYS launched the Salem Strangler story where everyone believed Marlena was his next victim, only it turned out to be Samatha. Jake Kositchek (played by Jack Coleman) was revealed to be the actual serial killer.

Later, Deidre would assume the role of Marlena’s look-alike, Hattie Adams in 2004, once played by her sister, Andrea. Over the years, Hattie has come back to Salem and caused trouble giving Hall a chance to play a different type of character, then the always upstanding Marlena.

THE LOVES OF MARLENA

Deidre Hall struck gold with all her leading men: from the late Jed Allan, to Wayne Northrop as Roman Brady, and of course, her enduring love story with the late John Black played by the iconic Drake Hogestyn. In fact, Marlena’s 1986 wedding to John (who was believed to be Roman at the time) remains a favorite of fans to this day.

TOP MARLENA STORYLINES OF ALL-TIME

While the list is long, here are several that were some of the memorable during Deidre’s five decades in Salem!

The Possession (1994- 1995)
Considered one of the most ambiguous, outlandish and unforgettable story arcs in soap opera history, then Days of Our Lives head writer, James Reilly went there! Marlena was possessed by the devil! That included; the demonic eyes, hissing at father John (Black) the priest, morphing into creatures, and the classic levitating in her bed! It became a cultural phenomenon and cemented Deidre Hall’s status as a daytime television legend. Just ask Ryan Gosling!

The Affair with John Black (1993)
John and Marlena’s forbidden love could not be denied and they had passionate affair, while she was still married to the real Roman. Problem was her daughter, Sami (Alison Sweeney) caught her mother having sex with John on a desk that changed Sami forever.

The Salem Stalker Mystery (2003-2004)
In a shocker, Marlena was revealed to be a serial killer who bumped off several Salem favorites residents who were all alive on the island of Melaswen (spelled “New Salem” backward). Turns out, she was manipulated and gaslighted by Andre DiMera (Thaao Penghlis) to do the “killings” and had no memory of her actions.

The Pier Scene (1991)
This remains Michael Fairman TV’s all-time favorite Deidre Hall moment, which featured some of the best acting in the storied careers of both Hall and Drake Hogestyn.

In the story, a presumed-dead Marlena returns after four years. One foggy night on the pier, John is alone, and Marlena steps out of the fog to reveal herself, and is reunited with the love of her life. You can watch it any year, any decade, and in any moment, and it will have you reaching for the hankies again and again. (best music score fo a soap scene of all-time too!)

Kristen’s Secret Room Reveal (1997)
Marlena was caught in Kristen Blake’s (Eileen Davidson) elaborate web of lies, when she was held hostage in a secret wine cellar/room until John managed to track her down, leading to an iconic on-screen reunion. The classic catfight between Hall and Eileen Davidson was one for the ages.

It should be noted that Maison Blanche, Queen of the Night, Possession, Aremid and Lady in a Cage were all a part of classic DAYS storyline and all featured Hall at the epicenter of it from 1993-1996.

THE RECENT YEARS OF MARLENA

In recent years, DAYS brought back the possession 2.0 storyline under then head writer Ron Carlivati in 2021 where the devil leapt back in Marlena after taking advantage of a frail Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes)

In 2025, viewers watched the end of the love story of John and Marlena, as John succumbed to injuries sustained in an explosion saving a vial of medication needed to bring Bo (Peter Reckell) back to life. Marlena has been a widow on-screen since June of 2025 as Hall as portrayed the good doctor struggling with her grief and to move on with her life since his death.

One story that never goes away is Stefano DiMera’s (the late Joe Mascolo) obsession with Marlena, his “Queen of the Night.” Even in death, Stefano is toying with her from the great beyond with the mysterious chess set and the missing “pawn,” that he had gifted John and Marlena in his will. The mystery is currently unfolding on all-new episodes of Days of Our Lives.

Tune-in to Days of our Lives on the Monday, June 22 episode as Marlena looks back at her 50 years in Salem.
