38th Annual Daytime Emmy Pre-Nominations Announced – Shocking Omissions!

The 38th annual Daytime Emmy Award Pre-Nominations were announced this morning by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. And to clarify, these are the performers that will now compete for the final slots on the final ballot which will be announced on May 11th, with the actual ceremony looking to be back in Las Vegas on June 19th.

About the voting process: A preliminary Daytime drama performer ballot, containing each of the six performer categories, was assigned to registered, eligible peer voters. This ballot contained the full list of all entrants submitted from each show and each voter was entitled to select as many candidates as they believed worthy of Emmy consideration. The candidates below, who received the highest number of votes for each show in each category, now advance to the final at-home screening round, due to be conducted in March and April, 2011, which will determine both nominees and winners.  Note: the nominees only submit one show for the competition to illustrate their work.

After On-Air On-Soaps reviewed the pre-nominations, several shocking omissions stood out to us. Let’s go around the horn looking at each show of who did NOT get to the final round that should have. (Remember these were performers who were eligible based on the pre-pre nominations list) From One Life to Live, Florencia Lozano did not score a nod for Lead Actress, nor did Nic Robuck for Younger Actor. Over at General Hospital, Kimberly McCullough, and Dominic Zamprogna, both did not receive nods in the Supporting category. ( Zamprogna had the tough task  of overcoming Jonathan Jackson and Jason Thompson, who also deserved to be in the running and did not make it in to the final round)  Over at DAYS, Crystal Chappell did not get in for Lead, nor did Suzanne Rogers, who had a banner year for Supporting Actress. Y&R had a plethora of odd choices leaving out Eric Braeden, Melody Thomas Scott and Michael Muhney for Lead and Supporting categories, respectively.  You can make your own assessments and rationale as to why the talented lot above did not get in to the next round.

And now after the jump, check out which of your favorites DID RECEIVE the pre-nominations. Congrats to all from On-Air On-Soaps!

DZ snub is just mind boggling! But congratz to all the noms!!

I would love to know if he got an in house vote from his PERS or not? That shooting s/l with sonny was amazing and whoever couldn’t acknowledge that, well shame on them!!!!

Where is Dominic Zamprogna’s name???

I’m happy with the prenom they deserve the recognition and I wont be petty wondering why others got snubbed it takes away from the folks who got a prenom and thats not fair to the talented people who made the list. Congrats to them.

Haley Pullos, Chad Duell, Steve Burton and Jonathan Jackson all deserve a nod. Haley and Chad have been incredible and Jonathan steals every scene he is in. I’ve never seen a male actor who can cry like he can and look so real. Congratulations to everyone.

Then I’ll be petty — because too many actors were ripped off AGAIN and too many names are on the list that don’t belong here.

Nothing is a mess like the daytime emmy awards.

I wish the soap press, which I do appreciate, would not just call out the terrible ommissions, but also call out the names of actors who SHOULDN’T be on the list.

I know it’s a close community, but the truth is always better. Some actors had too little s/l or were just plain bad. Some actors were nominated simply because they’re LIKED, for God’s sake.

The Melody Thomas Scott omission is particularly bad. After all these years, and after a great last year, she still can’t get a frickin nom? That is just pathetic.

I couldn’t agree more about the Melody Thomas Scott omission. I am absolutely HORRIFIED by this!! WTF?!?! It’s unbelievable to me that her peers constantly overlook her work. She is, hands down, one of the most talented performers in the industry and everyone knows it! What does this woman have to do to get a nom? It’s such a travesty. Shame on EVERYONE involved.

I am happy to see, however, that Tricia Cast was nominated. She is very deserving of that. She shines in everyone of her scenes and is very believeable.

Its another Suzanne Lucie fiasco with Melody! She is consistently above her peers….am wondering if perhaps the Bells decided to overlook her due to the negotiations of the past? hmmmm! Money but no glory!

Dominic Zamprogna being left off is really a crime. He’s the best actor on that show period. JJ, nice guy, but come on. Just cause you can cry at the drop of a hat doesn’t make you a great actor. Range people… that makes a good actor. Funny, mad, sad, those acting abilities are what make a good well-rounded actor. And to be able to do it without looking like you’re acting, that even better talent. JJ can sorta do comedy/silly scenes, but he looks stiff doing it. Trust me I get that soap performers are actually pretty good actors (hey, they’re not doing really bad B movies or porn so they have real honest talent). But, good looks and being able to naturally shed tears should not qualify you for an award. And of course I say this in the kindest way possible… these are all genuinely nice people doing good work.

These pre noms get worse and worse every year. We can only hope the final ballot quickly discards some of these blunders. What about Michael Muhney of Y&R who carried that show? Amazing, amazing work. The cabin scenes which he stole from everyone else in those scenes. The follow up scenes with Eric Braeden in the hospital while Adam is handcuffed to the bed This was also some of Eric’s best work in years. Soap actors are dopes for not recognizing the work of their peers whether they like them personally or not. Grow up people. And what in the world was the Days cast thinking submtiting Nadia Bjorlin over Suzanne Rogers? Then again all of the noms for their show are lazy, uninspired choices. Florencia Lozano was very surprising. I am not a big fan of hers and do not think she was a clear cut favorite like other past nominees have been. But on that show I would think she would be more of a choice than either Kassie or Gina T. in my opinion. The OLTL cast has shown their pettiness in the past with some of their nominee choices. I could go on and on but why bother at this point. Such a joke.

I thought for sure this would be Melody Thomas Scott’s year! It is a shame! Same nominee’s every year!

I did, too. Her work was every bit as good as Stafford and Cooper. Not to take anything away from either of those two, but I am completely incensed by their absolute ignorance of her work this past year. Do these people have televisions? There are no words.

Wow…I am shocked about Dominic Zamprogna not being pre-nominated! He is talented and has had a full range of screens, emotions and has been amazing! Yes JJ and Jason T have done great, especially JT…but I am blown away about this!

Very proud for Chad D ah ge has had an amazing year! And excited for Maurice! It is deserving!

Contests to all the pre- nominees!

Jonathan Jackson is an incredible actor who doesn’t have to rely on his good looks to make a scene. He’s got an incredible range of emotions. From his scenes in the park with Claire Walsh, to his sparkly chemistry with Maxie Jones, to his heart-breaking confrontation with Elizabeth Webber,Jonathan doesn’t fail to deliver the goods. He emotes with his eyes and his face and doesn’t just give the same blank stare when a scene calls for real emotional depth.

Gina got in for a year of Chemsity testing the Male Poplution of Landview over Florience!

LMAO. So true. I really like Tognoni, but that’s hilarious! 🙂

I know. I was sure Florencia would win the whole thing.

Are you kidding me! Kelly Monaco???? What tape did she submit, all she ever does is parade around in her underwear, break one of her extremely hig heels, lose her gun and get coffee for a mini me. Fronzie must have paid big bucks to get her submitted.

Fronzie paid big time for “his girls” getting nominated. This has got to be a joke.

I’m happy congrats James Scott! I hope this year wins

I agree 100% Sara! And also Molly! What great young talent!! Am surprised they even nominated Shelly….what a waste of space and time on the screen! Give her the boot and bring back Lucas!!

Completely shocked that Dominic Zamprogna didn’t get the pre-nom. Like Jason Thompson but can’t remember one scene of his last year that should have bumped DZ out of the nomination. His range from emotional devastation, to vibrating anger, and everything in between is incredible. I can’t help but look at those that were left of the list and think that there is way more politics involved here then anyone will admit to.

These pre-noms make me think that the selection process needs to be from a “compilation tape” rather than just one day. It should be for a body of work and not just one performance in an entire year.

I couldn’t have said it better.

I am shocked that Crystal Chappel did not make the final pre nom list for Days.Happy for the other Days pre noms.Shawn Christian deserves the final cut over JKJ.He had a few outstanding scenes to choose from like the period when Carly revealed to Daniel he was Melanie’s dad,and the father/daughter bonding scenes afterward

I agree with Shawn over Jay…..go gettem Molly!!!!

If it is petty to point out that many of the prenominations were awarded to individuals who would struggle to find scenes for supporting when they are supposedly lead or will likely use scenes with someone who should have been nominated because there are no other options, then I’ll raise my hand and admit I am petty.
This would be why I have not watched since Susan Lucci first won her Daytime Emmy. It has always been a high school popularity contest, and it has only deteriorated since then.

I am thrilled that Chad Duell landed a nomination; well deserved. His entire prison storyline arc last year and the aftermath trauma of the rape was excellent. He should be a contender next year too for the reveal that happened on 1/31/11. I also think that JJ had a phenomenal year last year, and he, too, deserves the nomination. I am surprised that DZ did not get a nomination, but the contest was between him and Jason Thompson (JJ was a shoe-in), and apparently, Jason nudged him out. Jason had a good tape with the affair confession and reveal. I know that DZ had a great deal of airtime, but I’m trying to recall a scene that would put him in the Emmy nominations. Did his finding out about Sonny being his father happen in early 2010? If so, his confrontation with Sonny was Emmy worthy. Why can’t there be three noms for each show?

Yes, DZ had the father son confrontation with Sonny end of January/beginning of February. He had some great scenes in response to Kristina’s issue with relationship abuse as well. He’s had wonderful scenes…so many of them. Don’t know why they left him out. He’s a big part of GH now.

I LOVE Crystal Chappell’s work and she’s a brilliant performer and lovely in person. I know that she can usually (to borrow a phrase from Daytime Confidential crew) ‘turn shit to sugar’, but I felt that she didn’t have sufficient good material for Lead Actress on DAYS last year. Most of the year she spent propping up other character’s storylines. She may have been better off in Supporting category.

Love CC and can’t wait to see her shine in a storyline of her own – and better writing. Also VENICE ROCKS!

Venice does indeed ROCK!!!

Totally shocked that Kimberly McCullough did not receive a pre-nom for her work this year. Like you, I thought her work with the equally deserving, Jason Thompson, was some of the best work on that entire show last year. I think we all know that the whole nominating process is flawed. I know that Peter Bergman actually spoke about it a few years ago. There has to be a way to fix the process to make it more fair and allow for people who actually watch the shows to determine the nominees. Then you can have the actors vote based on nominating reels. I don’t know what the answer is, but would love members of the soap press like yourself to speak out on this issue and maybe start a movement to have the process changed. When the whole process is flawed, it turns the Emmys into a joke.

I believ kimberly mccullough should of been nominated this is one of her best years.

Michael, I can’t believe what I’m reading! How did some of the worst actors get pre nominated? There are four that I could commit to. Jonathan Jackson, Chad Duell, Jerry Ver Dorn, and Laura Wright. Kelly Monaco cannot act She probably is one of the luckiest actors, if you even want to call her that, to even have a job. This is very upsetting. You are right about the omissions, Michael.Florencia and her story was unbelieveable. The writing was so good and eerie. I couldn’t keep my eyes off her performance and how she made it so real. I’m giving up. There must be politics involved. It seems to be going around!!! I just don’t understand how they could even believe some of these performers they selected deserve to be nominated. The soap world is going to hell in a handbasket…. Ick…….

Congratulations to Nadia Bjorlin. She desirves a nomination and a victory for her scenes about the hysterical pregnancy, especially the one Chloe is told she’s not pregnant. She rocked. And with her PPD this year, she’s rocking and should also get a nomination for next year’s Emmys. It’s about time this extremely talented actress gets some recognition for her amazing work

I’m still sad that Van Hansis chose not to submit himself this year. His body of work was fabulous in 2010.but he had his reasons. I know this in my head but that doesn’t make it any easier in my heart to accept this.Such a wonderful actor and such a wonderful man!!!

Dominic Zamprogna knows how to act his scenes with Maurice was astoning finding out he was sonny son and his role with kristena and helping her with her abuse was phenomina I cannot believe he wasn’t nominated because his girlfriend julie marie berman was which I am glad because she is a fantastic actress . He had so many scenes that should of been emmy worthy I don’t know how they pick the actors but I believe Doninic should of been pick .

I agree. I can’t believe it either. They overlooked a true acting gem when they overlooked Dominic Zamprogna.

Chad Duell Deserves that emmy because he is an amazing actor as Michael Corinthos

I am so bummed about Florencia not making the list. I was convinced oltl would snag another lead actress emmy win this year. Tea drove story all year. It was riveting. I love gina tognoni but how will she find a reel that could win. She is finally now being utilized, but 2010 was not Ginas year. The other joke is David Gregory. Really? I am not one of the Ford haters out therebut I cant think of a single scene he has been in that remotely touched me. At least Eddie Alderson got through, but Nic Robuck would have been my pic. Now I am rooting for Robin Strasser and Kristen Alderson to get some wins. Kristen is passed every year, and while her character has been dulled down, she is still my favorite teen.

Well said. I agree 100% with what you’ve said. I was CONVINCED that Téa from OLTL and Angie from AMC would be the shoo-ins for Lead Actress from ABC. Guess I’m only 1/2 right. 🙁 Yes, last year they kept Kelly bouncing from boring man to boring man until NOW when she’s finally showing spark with John! Sorry “Jolie” fans… Anyway, and ditto about the Ford guy. I HATED him (and his “acting”) until just NOW when he’s finally starting to have more dimensions and range than the narcissistic male whore he played throughout the bulk of 2010. I never thought I’d like a Ford, but now it’s apparent the guy has some talent. Which one is Nic Robuck – James or Nate? IMO, Nate is a better actor than the James guy.

I’m a bit happy with these pre-nominations but where are ERIC BRAEDEN, MELODY THOMAS SCOTT AND MICHAEL MUHNEY???????

Tricia Cast, YESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cant get excited about any of these noms really since As The World Turns is no longer with us. It was my favorite and I have watched all the soaps at one time or another. I would love it if As The World Turns won the emmy for outstanding drama even though its no longer on. After The World went off the air I gave DAYS about a month before I couldn’t take it any longer so I switched to One Life to Live. It is sooooo much better than Days. Several former ATWT and Guilding Light performers are on One Life now . In a way watching One Life is like going to a family reunion with family and friends you havent seen in awhile.

MICHELLE STAFFORD / PETER BERGMAN, / CHRISTIAN LE BLANC

Will these actors ever stop being pre-nominated from Y&R? Is anyone keeping count? Is it over 15 times each yet? Their are over 50 members on the cast, these three need to look around and notice others besides themselves.

Yep….I agree….but ya gotta love Billy Miller! Great talent!

My leading actors & actresses Maurice Benard (Sonny) and Steve Burton (Jason). Peter Reckell (Bo) and James Scott (EJ). Christian LeBlanc (Michael).Susan Flannery (Stephanie) and Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke). Alison Sweeney (Sami). Michelle Stafford (Phyllis) & for me Arianne Zucker (Nicole) is Lead.

I’m disappointed that Kimberly McCullough, Florencia Lozano, David Canary and Susan Lucci are not on the pre-nom list. I’m pleased to see that Robin Strasser and Melissa Claire Egan are in the running, though I think Egan should be up for Lead Actress.

I agree about Egan. Annie pretty much drove story. And, though I ADORE Alicia’s Kendall, she missed half the year and when she was on, she wasn’t Lead until Zack’s “death”…

What about Zach Slater? I think he was the best one on AMC. I think the series lost something without him.

Soooo glad that James Scott made it into the final cut, he sooo deserves to win as does Ali Sweeney. Aside from that I’m thinking Molly Burnett, Jay Johnson & Arianne Zucker should win in their categories.

If anyone deserves to win its Molly Burnett! Can’t believe Shelly/Stephanie is even in the running! I’m with you on James…Jay is not even close to James IMHO. Arianne is deserving as is Ali. I believe Maggie/Suzanne Rogers should have been nommed in best supporting…she’s a class act and so much talent!

i hope that james scott wins this time he truely deserve to win with all my heart

I wood like to see more of Days of Hour Lives win
this year.They are geting realy.

Dominic Zamprogna should have gotten nominated. I like the character of Patrick Drake but he has never been as intense or as engaging as Dominic has been as his character Dante. I waited all year to see Dominic’s name as being nominated. I am disappointed.

I could not agree more!

I am totally disgusted (yet again) with the fact that Dominic Zamprogna was once again denied the recognition he deserves as being an AMAZING actor. I truly believe that he played a key role in pumping some life back into the daytime show. The fact that he is being ignored YET AGAIN just goes to show how the suits, committee members, judges and all else involved pay no attention to the public/viewers/fans. I’m confidant in the fact that Mr. Zamprogna is well aware of of how many fans love him not only for his personality and appeal but for his phenomenal performance in all his scenes. It is reasons like this that diminish the value of these awards to me. I only hope they do the same for Mr. Zamprogna.

Brandon Barash deserved a nomination.

Sammy (Days of our Lives) is one of the best.

Mark Consuelos Celebrates One-Year Anniversary as Co-Host of ‘Live’ Alongside Kelly Ripa

Today, April 17th marks a full-year since Mark Consuelos (ex-Mateo, All My Children) took over the co-hosting duties of ‘Live” alongside his wife, and longtime co-host, Kelly Ripa (ex-Hayley, All My Children).

Consuelos replaced Ryan Seacrest who are six seasons decided to be back on the west coast full-time. For Consuelos, now having the opportunity to work off of Ripa as co-hosts has been something of adjustment for him, but viewers have been eating it up.

Live with Kelly and Mark has remained the No. 1 entertainment talk show on television over the past year, growing 3% in average total viewers to 2.23M per episode.  It is also the most-watched daytime talk show in the last year in key demos of women 18-49 and women 25-54. All of this, since the real-life marrieds teamed-up.

Photo: ABC

Speaking with Deadline, Kelly Ripa shared why the two are gelling on-screen, “I do think that there is something very possibly relatable about our relationship. We have disagreements like a normal couple, and we’re not afraid to let them unfold on the air and in front of America, and I think people find a lot of themselves in that.”

Mark weighed in how he has progressed as a host, and what he could improve at, sharing, “I’d like to get better at my interviewing skills. I’d like to get better at reading a teleprompter…I think I’m getting better at throwing to commercial. The other day in the middle of the show as we go to commercial, my sign off was ‘See you guys around.’ I mean, the show wasn’t over. The most obvious thing to say would be, ‘We’ll be back right after this.’ But I just said, ‘See you around.’ So we went to commercial and one of the producers (goes) ‘What was that?’ I don’t know… So for the next few sign offs, as a joke, I’d say ‘See you around.’ We got a kick out of it.”

Photo: ABC

Meanwhile, Kelly has given huge props to Mark, “I find Mark utterly compelling, really interesting, super funny, and he’s bold in a way like nobody else. He says what’s on his mind. If he’s thinking it, he says it.  I’ve done this a long time and oftentimes people will adjust their natural personalities to pander to what they think the audience wants to hear, and Mark will tell people what he thinks, and he doesn’t care if it’s not a popular opinion. It gives him an edginess that I think is really missing in the landscape today. Everybody’s so afraid to say anything, and Mark is unafraid to say exactly what he’s thinking.”

In a statement, Debra O’Connell, President News Group and Networks, Disney Entertainment shared, We could not be more thrilled with how Mark has seamlessly joined the show family as permanent co-host. His undeniable charisma and his and Kelly’s natural chemistry are evident as they deliver the laughs and smiles to our viewers each morning. We are incredibly proud of how Live has continued to evolve and that the audience is responding so enthusiastically.”

So, do you think Mark Consuelos is the best co-host his wife Kelly Ripa has ever had on ‘Live’? How would you say he is doing as co-host after one full year on the job? Comment below.
