RATINGS: The Bold and the Beautiful Reaches Almost 5 Year High In Total Viewers!

Dollar Bill and his antics are stirring up The Bold and the Beautiful and bringing in viewers by the boatloads!  In a fantastic ratings uptake, the CBS soap for the week of  November 4-8th brought in its highest total viewers numbers in almost five year, well 4.75 years, but we rounded that off!

B&B added +194,000 eyeballs with a total of 3,801,00 total viewers for the ratings week!  That is the highest it has been since the week of  January 26-30, 2009!   Looks like Bill Spencer’s (Don Diamont) mountain climbing adventure that almost killed him and gave him a “new perspective” on life, and showed him what’s really important, served as the major impetus for the rating surge.

Of course, as we have come to find out, Bill dumped Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang), and said he wanted to be back with Katie (Heather Tom) and their son, Will.  But there was a catch!  Bill was using Katie to get back what he really cares about the most … his damn company, Spencer Publications!

Elsewhere, The Young and the Restless took a bit of a nosedive loosing -77,000 but still holding strong at number one with 4,798,000 total viewers. Connor was brought home with his new eyes courtesy of Delia and Adam (Michael Muhney) is still looking mighty guilty for running down Billy (Billy Miller) and Chloe’s (Elizabeth Hendrickson) daughter!

Over at General Hospital, they took a small dive in the ratings too, losing – 107,000 viewers for the week, but still in at over 2.8 million in total viewers!   Heather (Robin Mattson) revealed she is Franco’s (Roger Howarth) bi0-mother at the big art gallery showing that sparked many reveals to come this week!

Last week, Days of our Lives celebrated its 48th anniversary with the words, “Let’s go to the videotape, err, DVD!”  As Brady (Eric Martsolf) and Kristen (Eileen Davidson)were finally going to exchange their “I do’s”, Marlena (Deidre Hall) hit the play button and all the guests assembled in the church saw Father Eric (Greg Vaughan) having “hot sex” with none other than, Kristen! Oh-oh!  Of course, as much as he has tried to say he was raped by the evil DiMera woman, no one was quite believing him!  DAYS gained +23,000 in viewers for these escapades and others, bringing their weekly total to 2,572,000!  Check out the entire ratings picture for the week via SON here!

So, it’s time to be our Soap Opera Programming Executive Armchair Quarterback!  What soap is working for you?  What soap has some issues you think need to be cleaned up?  What do you think about B&B’s performance for the ratings period?  Comment below!

the soaps will all be cancelled in the next 3 years. i want to see more reality shows and talk shows. gh will be cancelled next year. brians frons made a good decision to get rid of amc and oltl. erika slezak is a racist and she needs to retire.

How much are they paying you to spew such nonsense? Go away!

I will add this I may not like the storylines on these soaps that are left all of the time but still support a genre which brought a lot of joy to a lot of people for over 50 years. Hope they live on whether I tune in or not!

I don’t believe everything I read and certainly don’t believe ES is a racist. It seems like you hate the soaps. If so, why are you reading this column? LOL

Lisa, if you don’t like soaps, why are you commenting on this website? Hmmmmm????

Why does anyone make negative comments? To be noticed and stir up the pot…

Maybe you need to retire from this message board…there are many reality and talk shows opposite all 4 soaps you could be watching…everyone has the right to an opinion but yours seems only to stir up trouble so you can sit back, laugh and get a kick out of seeing how many angry replies you can get…you r a message board bully only here to start trouble…hope no one is dumb enough to fall for it…GH by the way will not be cancelled next year…so good day to you!!!

Leave lisa alone. you have issues my friend. anyone can voice their opinion here. you are the big bully on this site, get a life or go to bed you drama queen.

Jonathan…or whoever you are…yes…anyone can voice their opinions here…but this Lisa whoever is stirring up trouble and her remark that E.S. is a racist…come on…how would she know unless this Lisa was there…none of us really knows…this is a message board for people who like and watch soaps…if she likes talk then when talk shows are mention here thats were she should be…however, i find it strange that this ‘lisa’ and a few others come here and repeatedly say they should cancel all the soaps…there are only 4 and there is a lot of talk and reality shows out there to keep this so called ‘lisa’ satisfied…something is fishy here and with the other one or two other people who occasionally appear on this message board with almost exactly the same comments…and as for calling mea drama queen i do not come on this message board to stir up trouble…another funny thing you only replied to mine and no one else who asked ‘LISA’ why is she commenting here if she doesnt like soaps but you only attack me? I think i know why?

Erika Slezak is a great actress and a fine lady.If you hate soaps why do you visit this site?

Not to mention her father, Hollywood Director Walter Slezak!!

Obviously Lisa is a troll. She/he always posts under different names and says basically the same things in various threads. Hasn’t anyone noticed? I mean why is she posting about AMC and oltl under a bold and beautiful thread?

Lisa you don’t know what is going to happen and I hope you are wrong and if, you don’t have anything good to say about soap operas and there actors you shouldn’t be on this website , the fans don’t appreciate your comments. I guess you are against soap operas it is a real shame because you are missing out on something. good.

I enjoy parts of GH (not the constant changing of storylines, like Franco was Jason’s twin, now he’s Heather son). If we can’t count on any storyline to actually be true, maybe I don’t need to invest the time. I’m a new viewer of B&B and would watch more if it wasn’t so redundant (how long can the Hope/Liam/Steffy triangle go on?). Today’s storyline with Brooke turning the tables on Bill was great. Now, that’s more like it!

Go B&B………..

I love Don Diamont! I’m loving his storyline. I hope he’s ready for the next big shockers from Katie – she still has his company – she still has custody of Will and guess what, Bill? You are going to be a daddy again….or at least that should be icing on Katie’s cake.
GH is suffering from “writer’s cramps”. The premise of the storylines are good but the actual development and writing sucks. Be thankful that GH has some of the best actors in daytime…they make these characters rise above the writing…Sonny, Carly, Sam, Alexis, Diane, Lulu, Maxie, Michael, Morgan, Ava and Julian….they have their Emmy reels. Loving Tracy and Luke together.
Have a backlog of Y&R (9 episodes) and will catch up this weekend.
Stopped watching DOOL right after Jack was killed off. Storylines and characters made me lose interest.

Not unless Heather Tom is pregnant again!

Both CBS soaps are more down to earth with a touch of the romance novel and have a more or less realistic approach to story telling while Days and GH have been, since the 1980s, somewhat campy and occasionally cartoonish with aliens, devil possessions, sci fi plots and vampires ect(and as silly & absurd as they can be at times GH and Days remain my favorites. But what l like many might not) However, they do have moments of realism too, and imo, more entertaining than cbs soaps. They have been a great way to escape the real world and its problems 5 days a week…CBS attracts huge numbers because i feel most soap watchers prefer that more down to earth approach than the campy, farfetched plotlines on the other two shows…GH and Days can bring in the viewers with their campy style and sometimes over the top performances but that can wear thin with some viewers and they wont stay as committed to them as they do with the less farfetched plots of the CBS soaps. In recent weeks Days seem to hold on to its audience with its improved more believable stories but GH, which is still my top favorite have lost a few…not many…with its slighly less believable writing style…i believe if both GH and Days balance the show a little more with their cast:GH needs less while Days needs some additions and a few old favorites back, and…i dont mind a little humor but sometimes GH can go overboard plus id like to see more of the hospital and cast chemistry like it was in the 80s…Ron(and im a fan) did great work with OLTL and if he could write GH more like OLTLs finale year i believe the show could tie with B&B for second place!!!

I read Kaylas son Joey may be showing up in Salem…hopefully this means we will be seeing more of Kayla.

Joey is going to turn out gay.

I don’t know if you have been watching DAYS lately, but it is anything but Sci Fi and Supernatural! DAYS and GH are in my opinion the best shows on television period. I would rate the shows as follow these days:

1. DAYS
2. GH
3. B&B
4. Y&R

Campy? Sure, but Y&R and B&B have had their share of campy, and to be honest, I really don’t see the appeal in these shows.

I agree with you…GH and Days are the best(and my top favorite tv shows)…i was talking about how both shows have been written in a campy style since the 1980s, and are still occasionally written that way: Robins kidnapping, the fake masks, the vampire plot ect on GH. And i did mention Days has been more believable in its plots but it is still widely known for its campy approach…it wasnt too long ago Stephano(the phoenix) was again killed off and brought back from the dead, and im sure itll happen again and Kristens villainy is..imo…very campy…but i enjoy these stories and both shows are my favorite…maybe my comments werent clear enough…i was trying to say why i feel the CBS soaps are doing better(they are written more in the old style and never had vampires or any of their characters devil possessed or killed of most of its cast then brought them back from the dead as much as the other shows have)…i dont care for B&B and i only occassionally watch Y&R…im on your team Days and GH are the top soaps!!!

I appreciate fans… who have, at one time or another… watch the remaining 4… and are decades plus…. invested in… and know… the shows.. for what the are:

1. DAYS
2. GH
3. Y&R
4. B&B

i still think… CBS was so smart… to showcase and feature… ie: example: Y&R at 11 a.m… the start of the day… most people.. habitually… turn their TV on.. kids were off to school… husband gone… breakfast over… naturally… put the channel on CBS…

does it merit #1. resounding… shout from the rooftops… absolutely, NOT.

doesn’t mean, they are watching… intently…

I love DAYS andGH

I have watched Y&R

can’t say i’ve watched B&B… a 1/2 hour show… went by too quickly…

unequivocally: without doubt… DOOL and GH are on par… deservedly #1 and #2, your call

I refused to watch B&B…. based on principle

I was never a multi-millionaire… and don’t fashion or imagine myself.. like:

so.. why watch and farfetch

In my opinion DAYS and GH have been flip flopping back and forth between 1 and 2 and just a couple of weeks ago I would have rated them both tied at number 1, but DAYS has been outstanding these past few weeks and deserves the top spot.

I agree with the list Phil except for Y&R. B&B is the worst show so it deserves the #4spot or none at all. The writing on B&B is practically a recycle of William Bell old sl rivalry, they don’t have enough people on the set to created opposition and the absence of a villain, is a downer.l B&B has been reduced in strong characters traits “assassinations” ,boring triangles and a parade of the same sl going around between generations.Y&R is no way like that, it has realistic plots and various characters, so it doesn’t deserve that spot just because of JFP’ notorious history. Bradley on the other hand is overrated and overpraised, probably cuz of his dad great achievements.

First, I want to tell Lisa & Jonathan: anyone is indeed welcome to voice their opinions, even if making a total ass of oneself, dissing a genre they claim not to like but must be watching if they have such a negative opinion. The day I go onto a sports message board to say all sports suck and should not be televised is the day I officially need to GET A LIFE! I also agree with jimh: “Lisa” & “Jonathan” are message board bullies trying to stir up trouble. Not to mention talking about something they obviously know nothing about, and if these losers are still reading the replys, joke is on you, LOL! Soaps have had longevity above and beyond any type of programming. Now enough on them……..I love to see major increases in any of the soaps ratings. GH recently had its biggest increase in a few years as well. There are 3 soap regular (1 weekly, 2 bi-weekly) publications still in print, many nighttime shows are obviously soaps, and new shows like Devious Maids and The Haves and the Have Nots (giving the OWN channel its highest ratings yet!) are just getting started! Dallas is returning for a third season–after airing the original 14 seasons, one of TV’s most successful shows ever, 2 decades earlier! Soaps are far from dead!! I have watched GH on & off since 1973 and love it more than ever these days! It’s my favorite, though character/cast heavy, with the best balance of various stories tying many characters together. I also love B&B, Y&R and Days! B&B’s on location shoots (from Los Angeles to Aspen) is the best, and I look forward to Thorsten Kaye joining as the new Ridge, starting a whole new era. B&B is one of the most watched TV shows IN THE WORLD, popular in other countries, too. Though heartbreaking lately, Y&R is must see with the stellar acting in the tragic tale now being told. DAYS is great and I look forward to Kim & Shane’s visit this coming week, then John Black returning in a few more weeks! I will watch & support all 4 soaps as long as they air– which will go on for a long time to come, long after “reality” TV dies out!

When i read such comments, i am dismayed by the lack of understanding, and why Bell Jr is full of himself and can bother to pay attention,to the real world or the viewers who have watched long before he stepped into his dad writing room. I wish stop be padronizing when it comes to this show to assume about other people what they know, or understand or like, that’s just plain ignorance and arrogance. This show has become insuklting to anyone in this business and I feel sorry for the other actors and crew who works for real and give their best behind those other show like Y&R, GH Days, much more giving on the screen and on paper, compare to the lazy B&B showing the same people duing and saying the same things, writing like the show is stuck in the 90’swith Brooke Logan, not bothered to take it seriously. I just don’t get these people are comatose not to sees it or just in denial. What a shame, to see this show being put down over and over and actor leave cuz Bell is just a stubborn egomaniac moron……

I’m shocked B&B is still rising.

Right behind you.

My favorite is Y&R. I love the storyline of Adam’s child having the eyes of the little girl he ran over. Just wish they would not be so serious all the time. I watch B&B because it followsY&R. Hope Thorston improves this soap.

It is interesting to note that GH’s ratings are down again. The previous week, GH had more viewers especially in the desired demographic. The former OLTL viewers tuned in to see “Roxy’s” appearance. They we were gone. Bring back OLTL. I still don’t care for any of the GH characters and cannot get into the show.

I don’t see any of the remaining 4 network soaps going anywhere, anytime soon. I love the genre and will continue to support it. Hopefully, PP will get their act together and start a new “incarnation” of AMC and OLTL w/ a permanent deal with OWN.

I m so tired to see these “pumpin B&B up” articles every now and then, especially when the ratings are sinking. Should all of us who has clarity just “shut off our craniums” and go along with it? It seems everyone does PRETEND when it comes to B&B!. Well NOT TODAY folks, at least not me…..This article is nothing but another in a long line of well paid and built up PR jobs. I m passed the point of disgust but utterly insulted to see such lying nonsense keeping piling up, no matter how many times we have LOUDLY complain to CBS and B&B against the KKL/Logan show but hey why anyone would care to hear the other fans as we are always “patronized” or ignored by the big Bell Jr machine and name..I wonder what daddy Bell would say about this mess, the dearest son has created and the mud has dragged his name and empire into. WOW 3 million viewers? Yeah right lol

I totally agree. Sure, B&B just hit an all time high in the ratings, but it’s been up and down over the past few months, that I don’t see this huge “jump” in the ratings as a big deal. One week, they’re up 100,000 viewers, the next week they’re down 72,000 viewers, etc.etc.
I gave up watching this show about a year ago (and I watched it since day one) but I still tend to read about it online here and there, hoping that the show will improve (yes, in my opinion, it does need to improve-the Brooke/Hope show is getting a little out of hand).
Bell’s ratings will be huge in December when Thorsten Kaye shows up. The man has a huge fan base and I’m sure lots of former AMC viewers will be tuning in. I was actually thinking about tuning back in as well to see how TK’ will portray Ridge but since he is going to be paired with Brooke, I’m not going to bother. It’s the same old and same old, and I’m just one fan who had enough. Obviously, I’m in the minority, but this show is not the show it once was under Bill Bell’s leadership.

Well said. I totally feel the same. I started to watch this show since the first time it aired. On and off since Jr is the producer, but stopped watching 2011. I had enough as well to see my characters written like crap, to prop others. Not only that but the stories are just ridiculous, it is ONLY about these Logans getting men, (not to mention good locations and dresses) nothing else happen. Maybe Jr ‘s memory is a bit rusty to recall why daddy Bell was a star in the soap world.

Three friends and I were bored and we hashtaged B&B over 5,000 times. We don’t watch anymore, BTW. But we do this often as we know that hashtags count! It was fun! The least we could get is a thank you from Mr. Bell. 🙁 We plan to continue doing the same.

I used to never miss watching Y&R and sometimes watch B&B NOW as long as Brill is on or brooke and bill I will not miss it. Y&R needs to go back to it’s core cast of the past and there offspring and rebuild the fun that was Y&R.

I started watching GH when it landed Emme Rylan and Maura West I never watched before but I like it .It has a large cast so I am still learning the history great show though.I had no idea what I was missing.

YR and BB have been the two top ranked soaps in total viewers for almost 15 years now. They have always had traditional story telling, which obviously appeals to more people since they have more viewers.

And I didn’t say they appeal to everyone, just more people seem to like their style.

I think Days has done a great job the past several years trying to get back to that. Under Bill Bell’s pen in the 70’s Days was great. Then they took their free fall with possessions and aliens and really stretched believability. And well, GH, they treaded into that territory way back in the early 80’s, which I believe was their original downfall.

But every show has its fans. I’m glad that YR and BB are giving a majority of the soap viewing public what they want. Keep it up!!!

I agree about what you say, it is very true, that’s why this rating list is not believable and offensive.” Every show have its fans”, and also very important to point out, cuz VIEWERS are the people who make it a success therefore the most important to be heard. It is not about being “the oldest on the market” so to speak, but about the quality of the writing and storylines. B&B died with William Bell. To consider B&B next to Y&R GH or Days, the way it is now, it is unfair to everyone in the soap world. not only viewers but actors writers and producers. Just because Jr’ last name is Bell, it is not a valid reason to ignore the bad writing, the lack of consistency, and the biased approach. Ironically you just made a huge point why Bell should be fired /REPLACED or B&B cancelled and why the show has no appeal anymore!. Thank you

When will this crap be cancelled so that cbs can put something else in its place.

The high ratings are due to the purchase of FB likes, Twitter followers & YouTube. It’s all purchased. When they started allowing social media to be counted into the rating. The FB likes are growing by the thousands; however, not supported by comments. This is Social Media 101.

Is the young Stephanie coming back does anyone know

Arianne Zucker Reveals Her Last Days of our Lives Airdate

Arianne Zucker, who is no longer on contract with Days of our Lives, and involved in a lawsuit against the show, took to her You Tube channel and in her latest episode, and offered up what she believes is her final airdate as Nicole Walker DiMera.

The actress expressed: “I was really appreciative of the amount of support that I have had since leaving Days of our Lives.” She then added,  “My last airdate, I think, it’s July 29th and we’ll see how things go after that.”

Zucker went on to say how she has continued to receive overwhelming support since suing her former employer, Corday Productions, with the allegations that former Co-EP Albert Alarr sexually harassed her and other females at the show, and that the production company entity did not respond sufficiently and adequately.

Photo: JPI

After lodging her complaints, Zucker said her agents received two notices that Corday Productions were reducing her pay before her character was ultimately written off.  Zucker’s contract expired in January and since DAYS tapes over six months ahead it brings her final airdate, which as of now, to the end of July. Zucker is suing for harassment, discrimination, retaliation, negligent hiring and supervision, and wrongful termination among other claims.

Previously, Corday Productions issued this statement on Zucker’s claims: “The allegations in Ms. Zucker’s lawsuit are without merit. Corday Productions, offered to renew Ms. Zucker’s contract including offering her a pay increase. Rejecting Ms. Zucker’s counteroffer does not constitute retaliation. Complaints about Mr. Alarr’s on-set behavior were promptly investigated. Corday Productions fully cooperated with the impartial investigation and subsequently terminated Mr. Alarr.”

On her You Tube channel, Arianne went on to thank everyone who came out to the east coast fan event last weekend that featured several DAYS stars. She expressed, “My whole goal is to really help people stand up for themselves.” Arianne also shared she thinks it’s important for people who have gone through trauma to help each other through it.

Photo: JPI

On DAYS, Nicole is still in the dark that Sloan (Jessica Serfaty) is raising her child, Jude, with Eric (Greg Vaughan), and Eric also doesn’t know that he is raising his biological son. Will Eric and Nicole reunite and will Nicole find out what Sloan, Melinda and Leo (Greg Rikaart) have been hiding for months, before she exits the show? Stay tuned. There has been on official confirmation from DAYS that July 29th is Zucker’s final airdate.

You can check out Ari’s latest episode from her You Tube Channel below.

Now let us know, do you think somehow DAYS and Arianne will work these out and she will somehow be back on the show? What do you think Nicole’s exit will look like? Do you think they will recast? Let us know in the comment section below.

DAYS and ‘Supernatural’ Alum Jensen Ackles Joins the Cast of Justin Hartley’s CBS Series ‘Tracker’

Look who’s joining Justin Hartley’s hit freshman drama, Tracker! None other than another soap alum, former Days of our Lives and Supernatural favorite Jensen Ackles.

In a reveal via Hartley’s Instagram on Thursday, Ackles is set to play Hartley’s on-screen brother on the CBS procedural drama. In Tracker, Colter Shaw is estranged from his brother, Russell, which has been a big part of the mystery of season one.

Ackles is best known for his long run as Dean Winchester in The CW’s Supernatural, a role he reprised in the prequel of the series The Winchesters. He also recently starred in ABC’s Big Sky as Sheriff Beau Arlen and in The Boys as Soldier Boy.

Jensen was the original Eric Brady on Days of our Lives, a role he played from 1997-2000, before departing for the world of primetime and film.  Eric was in love with Nicole played by Arianne Zucker. The part of Eric was recast with Greg Vaughan taking over the role in 2012.

Wally Kurth Talks on His DAYS Daytime Emmy Nomination, His Emotional Scenes, and Remembering John Aniston

During our 2023 year-end honors at Michael Fairman TV, we named Wally Kurth as our pick for Best Overall Performance by an Actor for his double-turn as both Ned Quartermaine on General Hospital and as Justin Kiriakis on Days of our Lives. So, it was absolutely no surprise to us that Wally landed a Daytime Emmy nomination for his riveting work as a grieving Justin in the Supporting Actor category for the upcoming 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

On DAYS, Justin had been put through the emotional wringer, of first, losing his beloved Uncle Vic, played by the late John Aniston, and then finding out that Victor was the supposed biological father to Justin’s son, Alex (Rob Scott Wilson). If you didn’t reach for the hankies during some of Kurth’s work in these scenes, we don’t know what will make you do so.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Wally to get his reaction to his fourth Daytime Emmy nomination in the last six years. Kurth was nominated in the Supporting category in 2018, 2020 and now 2024 and Lead Actor in 2021.

In addition, Wally shares what scenes were on his nominated reel, how John Aniston impacted his work, how he has changed as an actor over the years with a new outlook, and being the only actor out there with two long-running roles on two long-running soaps, and much more. Here’s what Wally had to share below.

Congratulations on your well-deserved nomination. You decided to submit yourself this year for Emmy contention in both Lead Actor for GH and Supporting Actor at DAYS, correct?

WALLY: I did. I thought the DAYS reel was a little more dramatic, much more emotional. I had thought with the way the judging goes that it might be a little bit more, winnable, if you will. I enjoyed and was proud of my work at General Hospital, so it’s all good. I’m thrilled. It’s always nice to be nominated.

Photo: JPI

What scenes did you ultimately choose for your Supporting Actor reel?

WALLY: I started chronologically, as always, trying to tell a little bit of a story. I actually started with a scene where Justin has to tell Maggie (Suzanne Rogers) that Victor’s (the late John Aniston) plane went down and it was not found. Then, the scene with Bonnie (Judi Evans) where I sort of have to let it all out, and grieve the loss of this man who was practically Justin’s father, but it was his Uncle Vic. We have a little scene talking about Victor, and then there is a short snippet at the funeral where Justin eulogizes Victor. Next, we jump to scene where Justin discovers the letter where Angelica admits that indeed Victor is Alex’s father (Rob Scott Wilson). So then, Justin has to tell Alex, and then I also sort of grieve the fact that I’m no longer his father. Justin basically lost his son. It was very dramatic and very emotional. I was guessing the judges would be like, “Hey! Enough with the crying! Stop, you big baby!” But, they didn’t. They must have thought that it was convincing enough that it felt really truthful at how Justin was upset about these two unfortunate realizations.

Photo: JPI

You bring up a really good point. I talk to actors all the time about crying on Emmy reels. Sometimes, many feel it might put voters off. But obviously, this time it worked well for you!

WALLY:  What I liked about the crying scenes was that, like in real life, you’re not crying all the time when something bad is happening, right? I think crying happens and it takes you off guard. It happens without you realizing it. These were all moments when Justin was alone, really. Bonnie comes in the room where Justin is just kind of like dealing with it. And then her coming in, opens up Justin and she is there to hold him. I think that often happens in real life. I thought that was correct for the writers to do that, you know, that Justin would break down when he was alone.

Photo: JPI

Did you feel the pressure of wanting to get these scenes when Victor died and at his memorial, just right due to the enormity to it, and to do justice for John Aniston?

WALLY: I allowed myself to use my heartbreak over John Aniston. I loved him. I just sort of allowed his presence for me in the scenes. It was sweet. It was good for me. I’m just thinking about it now and I feel teary-eyed. John was such a sweet man. He led by example, and he really did teach me how to be a professional actor, and he was a mentor. He never told me anything specific, but he was just John, and in the scenes, this was the time for me tell him how I feel.

Photo: JPI

Then, you had the heartbreaking scenes with Rob Scott Wilson where Justin tells Alex he is not his father!

WALLY:  I thought that was just really challenging material. As I get older, I just trust the material, and don’t get ahead of myself. I trust myself with the emotion. Just let it happen if it happens. When I first read it, I kind of imagined what it could look like and then you just let it unfold from there.

You’ve got Robert Gossett (Marshall, GH), A Martinez (Nardo, The Bay), Mike Manning (Caleb, The Bay), and Bryton James (Devon, Y&R) all in your category. Robert has won two Daytime Emmys in a row, last year for Supporting Actor and the year before for Guest Performer.

WALLY:  l love Robert. I worked with the character Marshall on General Hospital, and we had so much fun. He’s a great guy and a really good actor. A Martinez is the best guy ever. I have such admiration for him. Whenever I see him, we always really connect and to be in included with him is great. Bryton James, I don’t know, but I know he beat me in this category in 2020. Mike Manning, I didn’t get the opportunity to know when he was at DAYS as he weren’t in scenes together, but I hear good things about him, too.

Photo: JPI

When you are judging Emmy reels, what do you look for when you’re voting on a performance?

WALLY: That’s a really great question. And because let’s face it, there’s just a lot of terrific talent in daytime. This year, I judged two categories. I don’t just go with, “Okay, who’s crying the most.” I really try to go with the one who’s touches me the most, who surprises me and moves me. And so, if you go with that, you’re probably going in the right direction. I also think that upfront you do need to kind of give them something in the first couple minutes that shows you know what you’re doing and don’t make it too repetitive.

Who did you first tell you were nominated?

WALLY: My manager, Michael Bruno called me. I was in Chicago with my daughters having a late breakfast and I knew the nominations were going to happen around 11 am Chicago time. I didn’t tell my daughters about what was happening, just in case, I didn’t get nominated. So, when Michael called, I went, “Oh, boy!” I told my daughters who were sitting at the table with me. So, they were the first two people that I could tell, and that was really nice.  We had champagne which was really funny because I bought three little glasses of champagne, and as soon as I bought it, we toasted. They said, “We don’t really like champagne.” So, I ended up drinking all three glasses. (Laughs)

What do you think of Eric Martsolf (Brady), your Day Players Band member, and DAYS co-star getting a Lead Actor nomination?

WALLY: I remember, I was like talking to him and I was like, “Eric, are you going to submit yourself?” And he is like, “I don’t know. I don’t really have anything …” And the next thing you know, he’s nominated. I’m like, “Wow! I guess he found something!” (Laughs) I love Eric. I have such respect for him and his gift, and he works really hard. So, I was very happy for him. I’m glad we weren’t in the same category, however.

How many years now have you been playing Justin on DAYS?

WALLY: I started here 37 years ago in 1987. I was there for four years and then I left. Then, 18 years later, Ken Corday (EP, DAYS) invited me back in 2009 and I’ve been on the show now for 15 years. So, I guess a total of 20 years on and off over the last 37 years. Everyone remembers 1987-1991 … those were big, big years for Justin and Adrienne who back then were a supercouple.

Have you determined who you would thank in your acceptance speech if you win this year’s Supporting Actor Daytime Emmy?

WALLY: I feel like this year I kind of have an idea of what I would say. I think I can remember all of that without writing it down. If I had gotten nominated for both shows, I was definitely going to point out and thank the powers-that-be for giving me dual citizenship and how much I appreciate that. I do think that being on both soaps, I will go to my grave believing that it’s made me a better actor. In fact, since I’ve been doing both shows, I’ve been nominated for Daytime Emmys. I’ve become a better actor. I feel like maybe it’s just that I’ve gotten older and wiser, but I feel as though when I go in there to work, I’m really focused and I’m really prepared. I know I pretty much get one shot to get it. We’re in the business of “one takes” now in the soaps.

People are so lucky to even have one enduring role in their careers, but you’ve been able to have two, and they’re completely separate characters on two legacy shows; one which just turned 61, General Hospital, and the other Days of our Lives which will soon celebrate 60 years, as well.

WALLY: I didn’t plan on it. I must have done something right. Back in 2009, Ken called me up and invited me back to DAYS. I really jumped in. I’d been out of work for four or five years. I went back with a whole new attitude about the work, about the genre.  In 2004, when I left General Hospital, I was kind of burnt out. Looking back on it, I didn’t have a good attitude and I was just done. I was kind of tired. New writers come in and sometimes, when you have new writers that look at your character differently, it can be very difficult, because you just know that their passion is not with your character. However, in this case, I’m like, “I’m going to take whatever the writers give me and do the best I can and do my job. Let the writers do their job.” I think the writers also know that I really respect them and I’m not going to complain. I’m not going to tell them what to do and I’m going to stay out of it. They have enough to work out. They have enough to do. I’m going to be the problem solver, not the problem creator. There are enough problem creators. Believe me when I tell you that every time I leave those sets, I’m like, “Thank you. I love it.  See you the next time I see you.” I know how lucky I am to do both shows and to have this opportunity to act at my age and still be sent scripts. I love the art of acting. I’d do it for free. The fact that they’re paying me and I am able to do this and work with these great, wonderful, talented actors every day, it’s kind of mind-blowing.

So, will you be rooting for Wally to take home the gold in this year’s Outstanding Supporting Actor in Daytime Drama Series at the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards on June 7th live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+?
