44th Annual Daytime Emmy Award Winners: GH Wins Drama Series, Y&R’s Tognoni and B&B’s Clifton Take Top Acting Honors!

On Sunday night, the winners were revealed at the 44th annual Daytime Emmy Awards streamed online and held at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.  For the second year in a row, General Hospital took top honors for the Outstanding Drama Series.

Executive Producer, Frank Valentini took the stage to accept the trophy on behalf of the long-running ABC daytime drama series.

In addition, GH took home the honors for Outstanding Direction in a Drama Series.  GH won 4 Emmys last night making it the evening’s most rewarded daytime program.

In the top acting categories of the night; it was The Young and the Restless, Gina Tognoni for her role as Phyllis Summers taking home the gold for the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. This is Gina’s third Emmy in her enduring daytime career.  She has previously won two for her role as Dinah Marler on Guiding Light.

And making Emmy history was The Bold and the Beautiful’s Scott Clifton.  After winning his first Lead Actor in a Drama Series award for his role as Liam Spencer, Clifton became the only male actor in daytime drama history to have the trifecta – he has now took home gold in the Younger Actor, Supporting Actor, and Lead Actor categories.

It was also a great night for another previous Daytime Emmy winner.  Steve Burton was awarded the Emmy for the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Dylan McAvoy on The Young and the Restless.  He had previously been won in this category for his role as Jason Morgan on GH.

Performers involved in storylines revolving mental illness also did extremely well at last night’s ceremonies.  Kate Mansi took home the gold for the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Abigail Deveraux on Days of our Lives, and Bryan Craig made it a two-peat for his performance as Morgan Corinthos on General Hospital in the Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series.

General Hospital’s Lexi Ainsworth was awarded her first Daytime Emmy for her role as Kristina Corinthos Davis on General Hospital.

The Young and the Restless took home the honors for the Outstanding Writing in  a Drama Series, and Jim O’Heir won the Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series for his role as Matt Cannistra on The Bold and the Beautiful.

Congrats GH but honestly the Lead Actress trophy belonged to Nancy Lee Grahn – totally robbed !

Gina Tognoni had a good year, but I thought Laura Wright or Nancy Grahn would take home the award.

Gina Tognoni? Please. She is not phyllis

I couldn’t agree more.

Really, wow – both are you are wrong period.

Gina won get over it

GINA TOGNONI IS THE REAL WONDERFUL PHYLLIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But she is Phyllis. I think what you mean is she is not Michelle Stafford. And it’s totally a legitimate opinion for people to prefer Michelle’s portrayal. But the Emmy Awards aren’t about comparisons. In fact, if Gina tried to imitate Michelle’s style, she would never win an Emmy because it would be so inauthentic. The best acting is when a performer brings shades of herself and uses them to influence her choices, making the character more fully realized. That’s what both Michelle and Gina do, which is why they are both well-respected actresses. Gina does amazing things with the character of Phyllis in her own right, which is why she deserved the win.

AMEN!

I have scoured the news for police reports, none found. Appears there was no robbery at all, and that the Lead Actress Emmy is safely at home with the sparkling and talented winner, Gina Tognoni! Yes!!!

Yes, Gina Tognoni definitely deserved it!

Well she probably did not win because did she have any scenes with Maurice because according to FV that’s the only reason Lexi & Bryan won they had scenes with MB honestly how insulting to those young actors.

You mean just being Sonny’s “devil spawns” weren’t enough????

Agreed, John.

As much as I like Gina, I really thought that Nancy deserved to win.

I agree.

Please get award show back on TV. Even a cable network would help.

I thought April Fool’s Day had passed a month ago. GH (aka Mob Central) actually won for “Outstanding Drama Series”?!?! What a colossal joke! There’s nothing at all that’s “outstanding” about what’s currently seen on that hot-mess of a soap with those two old out-of-touch hack women as the head writers. That’s why these daytime awards cannot be taken seriously at all anymore. No wonder they were taken off broadcast TV for good.

To me, these awards have been completely watered down. With only four daytime dramas left, it stands to reason that there’s now a much greater chance of a show winning. Each show has a 1/4 chance. It was much more impressive back when there were 10+ soaps on the air and much more competition and quality on the shows. If the terrible writing/stories and lack of focus being seen on GH these days is actually being rewarded with an honor like that, then this genre is in more trouble than any of us think.

I used to think that way too. What kind of a competition is it really with so few competitors? Is it really much of a “win”? And in some ways, I still think like that.

But then I look at a category like the news program or entertainment news. You have GMA, Today and CBS morning / Sunday mornings in one, and Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood and Extra in the other. The field is very thin in those categories too with the same nominees every year but watching them accept the awards they won showed me how much it meant to them nonetheless.. It didn’t matter how many there are just as long as they beat their competition. And I thought, if it means a big deal to them, why would I think it means any less to soaps?

Just something else to chew on.

Thank you, Nick! Excellent points!

General Hospital winning best show is just silly. That show is always all over the place.

The writing for GH is God awful!!! There’s a good reason why Jean and Shelly were fired from Y&R.
The actors and the dialogue writers should be paid over time for dealing with the crap which is constantly being thrown at them.
Time for the EP and head writers to go bye-bye.

Excellent show- loved the tribute to Agnes Nixon and seeing Susan Lucci also the Bold and Beautiful tribute and the singing was great, too. Totally delighted with Gina Tognoni’s well-deserved win. I was surprised that Chuck Pratt won best writing. He did bring a lot of explosive storylines, and I see that can make a good emmy reel, but things were constantly happening-again, exciting-but always left me wondering why, how, what??
Great work on the tributes, MF, also the red carpet coverage was fun to watch and appreciate the hard work that went into the entire evening.

Surprised by a lot of these winners.

Kate totally deserved her Emmy.

Scott and Gina are great actors, but I am surprised they won.

Don’t watch GH so I am partial to the other three soaps. I do think B&B should have won best show, but there’s always next year!

Congratulations to everyone.

Kate Mansi, definitely deserved to win; agreed! She definitely grew into a fine, young actress during her time at Days.

the orchestra can take leave

baubles and champagne blitz… leftover

no bells and whistles , forever

Laura Wright did not – win –

YES YES! and more YES ( p-a-r-t-y)

Frank / Jean / Shelley are the ones responsible for this mess. they rely so heavily on the Corinthos Clan…. that it fell…. crashed… and is left all over the place

as I’ve posted of late

Sonny , Carly, and Michael are caricatures of themselves. they are better of in one room piling it on. no need to lock the door … they wouldn’t know the difference

this has just got to stop… who cares for all the misunderstandings ? Sonny and Carly , along with Jason, Sam, Finn, Hayden, and MIichael have simply got to be given the heave ho. OUT

FIRE

Is someone supposed to make sense out of this nonsensical word salad?

I’m sure Frank, Jean and Shelly were thinking about how the show is a “mess” and has “crashed” when they were celebrating winning their second consecutive Best Drama Series Emmy, based on episodes featuring many of the actors you maligned.

@Brian…Many of us consider Patrick’s “word salads” to be an essential ingredient of a healthy daily diet here at MFSoaps. His unique style of expression is an absolute mainstay…and yes, sense can be made from his interesting and highly creative manner of writing! It just sometimes requires a bit of equally-inspired imagination on the part of the reader!

Hey if you’ve EVER read Patrick’s posts they’re anything but a non sensical word salad. They’re quite prolific. Not cool. If you don’t like what you read keep it kicking don’t attack cuz you think it’s cute. It’s not. LOVE IT PATRICK. and very easy to understand. And don’t bother bashing me Brian cuz I won’t respond even if you do. PEACE!

Thank you, Patrick! Excellent commentary and ideas on firings!

Well, I was beaten to the punch by some other terrific people here (Shay, davlestev1), but I also wish to commend you for your unique eloquence and always enjoyable posts.

I am going to assume that Brian was having a bad day and regrets his first sentence. Unfortunately, at this site, there is no “Edit” button after a post has been submitted. Lord knows, I am no stranger to rewrites… Take care, Friend!

Biggest head scratcher moment for me Clifton best actor his reel was the weakest and it is not just my opinion everybody is having a OMG moment!

His appeal really is a head scratcher as is Gina Ts.

Agreed, k/kay.

I don’t believe that Lexi deserved the win. She wasn’t that outstanding in my opinion.

SHE WAS LEAST OUTSTANDING TO WIN…….ONLY THAT STORY LINE WON IT FOR HER…..GO FIGURE…..SO MANY TALENTED OTHER PEOPLE….

I agree. However, I am not a fan of the character, nor am I fan of the “Morgan” character, or Bryan Craig, for that matter. Both characters are spoiled and rotten to the core, very narcissist, in my opinion. I just don’t care for the characters or how they are portrayed by the actors.

I hope Morgan stays dead!

I’m happy with gh winning best show and I’m happy Lexi ainsworth won for playing Kristina, it’s well deserved.

Gina! Gina! Gina!!!!!

Agree,Agree,Agree‼️‼️‼️

Yes!

Love Gina too, but please tell her she’s captured our attention so she can stop whispering!
Speak up, girlfriend!

Michelle! Michelle! Michelle!

Both Nancy Lee Grahn and Finola Hughes were robbed! And what funny is….all the winners got their start on ABC Daytime. Says a lot doesn’t it?

Well, Finola was definitely robbed! Chloe, too. Enough said!

I cannot remember ONE scene where Gina out acted Finola? Horse crap!

I thought Finola had one of her best shots to win this year since she’s been back. Her reel was fantastic from start to finish. Not sure what more she has to do. 26 years and counting since her last win.

I had Laura Wright for the win slightly ahead of NLG, but was definitely rooting hard for both of them. I don’t watch Y&R, but in watching Gina Tognoni’s reel, I wouldn’t say anyone was robbed, however.

Fun fact: Phyllis is the only character to win lead actress for two different actresses. That was daytime history.

Didn’t GH do that with the different Carlys?

Sarah Brown never won for Lead Actress as Carly, for her it was two Younger Actress and one Supporting Actress. Laura Wright is the only Carly to have won for Lead Actress.

No. Only Laura Wright won for Carly. Sarah Brown got the nomination for playing Claudia in 2010. Maura West won that year for atwt Carly

I thought Sarah Brown or Ava B. won lead actress for playing Carly.

I miss Kate Mansi as Abigail! She was so deserving of this award!

Me too, I liked her as Abby and she’s so pretty. I’d love to see her come back.

THIS was a huge moment of heart tug

its long in the tooth to see DAYS of OUR Lives “win” at any thing

with all due respect to Ms. Kate Mansi… big hug it OUT… to YOU. Congrats , their you go… my little girl is stretching her wings… nest open.

speaking of big triangle emote : with Chad, Ben, and Abs. this knocked . so much range of emotion… and all these three hit

tearful emotion to Kate. hey, I truly thought she had no chance against Finola Hughes. be well and take care.

Yes; and I think its wonderful that she is moving on at a nice pace with her career. However, the casting department really made a mistake casting nuAbby. The actress has no spark, no spunk. She’s a dud!

Exactly, and I feel bad saying this but why does she still look like a burn victim? Don’t they have makeup to make her look more attractive?

Watched the show on Facebook and had no issues other than the feed froze once. I was skeptical about the whole streaming online thing, but my hat off to the producers, thought it was a well produced show for the most part. Although, I think Mary Hart might still be giving her speech, lol.

I wrote on here the other night about how I didn’t think GH would win Best Show with the episodes they submitted, the hostage crisis at the church where Sonny jumped out of the wheelchair to save the day. I was wrong. Still not a fan of those particular episodes, but credit to the decision makers at GH, they know what the Emmy voters like. Very happy to see them extend their own record with their 13th Best Drama Series win. And I liked Frank shouting out Maurice Benard on stage.

Was rooting for Laura Wright and Nancy Lee Grahn in the Best Actress category, but I watched Gina Tognoni’s reel and thought she was very good, so I can’t complain. Thought Finola Hughes had a good shot to win for Supporting Actress this year, unfortunately that didn’t pan out. Very happy for Bryan Craig winning his 2nd consecutive Emmy, that one was a slam dunk. Lexi Ainsworth was a bit of a surprise, but she put together a good reel and with the gay storyline, it was winning formula. Congrats to her.

Nice post, Dan. LOL regarding Mary Hart!!! I actually put the sound on mute because I couldn’t deal with it once we got past the ten minute mark! LOL!

Billy Flynn and/or Peter Bergman should have gotten Lead Actor. Scott is a very good actor and I know he puts out very good work, but Billy had an amazingly honest reel while Peter’s is so visceral. I would have liked to see them take it, or have Vincent Irizary be the spoiler.

So happy for Kate. While I actually don’t think her reel did her work justice, having followed her work last year in its entirety I know that she deserved it. It was gut-wrenching and at times very hard to watch.

Lead Actress was very tough to call. I think Gina is wonderful and I love her Phyllis. The first half of her reel was powerful. The second half I thought made her (the character) look very weak and needy. I thought because of that for sure Laura was going to get it. But all 5 ladies in that category were off the chain good. Any one of them, if not all of them, deserved the statuette (winkwink Mario Lopez).

Anyway, GREAT show. From start to finish all involved put on a show WORTHY of being called an award show. It was classy, well-attended and did justice in making winners feel like winners. Kudos to all (including Michael Fairman who I’m sure once again had a hand in reel packages and tributes). A show like that makes me forget about the Vegas awards show!

My dear Jules!!!! What a lovely surprise! How are you??? I’m ever so glad to know that you are still lurking about this website and enjoying my saucy little slams! I wish you would occasionally pop in at the GH threads….that’s basically where my “feet” remain planted and it would be a real treat to see you post there at least now and then. I have nothing but absolutely wonderful memories of our past times discussing all things Port Charles, so I hope to see you there soon and that all is truly well and good with you…..Later!

That’s so nice of you to say!

I’m afraid other than the headlines on websites such as this one and their reels for award show purposes, I honestly and truly know nothing else about the work of any GH actor. I caught a glimpse a few weeks back of a show, and was on the verge of tears. I recognized so few of the players on screen…I was so disappointed with how far gone this show has, well, gone. I don’t recognize it at all. I watched that show throughout University (I guess what you Americans would call “college” :P) and beyond and it pains me to see what a shell of its former self it has become. And that’s storylines aside; I’m just talking about the people first, before I even had a chance to get up to speed on where everyone was. GH has always been a very divisive show, but it seems most agree on how lousy the writing is. A return is likely not going to happen with me anytime soon.

These days I am more of a browser than a contributor to any topic of conversation. If however I ever do check out those articles and comb through the threads, I will be sure to keep an eye out for yours because I enjoy reading your material like I love reading any amusing yet sharp piece of writing.

I hope all is well with you too. I’m so happy to see you’re still around, firing on all cylinders as per usual. Show em how it’s done!!

Thank you for your interesting update and kind thoughts, Jules! Yes, I’m very well, too, although GH is an abysmal disappointment for many of us these days…I could barely make it through the entire “Tracy” episode that was featured on Friday, and I’m limping toward her swansong on May 4th…but let’s suffice to say, I “generally” rely on video snippets and mostly this wonderful website to stay apprised of the show’s happenings. It’s become much more of a daily habit than I believe GH shall ever be again, as I truly enjoy the “cast of characters” featured here at MFSoaps!!! Some date back to the early days of our “first introduction,” whilst others are more recent fast friends, but the number of talented and truly nice people here is the real impetus to keep “dropping in!” It’s ever so pleasing, not to mention flattering, to know that one of my first fond acquaintances here is still prone to reading my comments, so thanks for remembering me and appreciating my sometimes naughty musings! Take care!

I wish the Daytime Emmy’s would have been televised. In my opinion, Nancy Lee Grahn should have won an Emmy for her work this past year. She was amazing and I can’t imagine anybody better.

Try Viola Davis….

HAHAHA!!!

Shay!!! You always have a way with words!

PERFECT response!!! I am in stitches!!!

HAAAAAAAAAA!

Oh SNAP!!!

I was surprised that Nichelle Nichols didn’t win for her stint as Lucinda. Those scenes with her and Kristoff were heartbreaking and performed superbly by both of them.

But the real snub of the night was Laura Wright. She absolutely slayed her scenes as Carly grieving her son’s death, and provided so much weight in every scene she was in. She’s an actress who can speak so much without saying a single word, and I think she deserved the win this year. That’s not to say Gina wasn’t fantastic as well; the court scenes with Victor and the reveal with Jack were phenomenal. But this was Laura’s year, in my opinion.

Bryan Craig’s win was a foregone conclusion; his reels were the best of the bunch. Same with Lexi Ainsworth, she’s been great ever since she started back on GH several years ago.

It’s really nice that now, since Kate Mansi and Steve Burton are no longer part of their shows, that they won for their roles. Abigail and Dylan both went through extremely emotional stories this past year, and the acting talents of Kate and Steve showed their character’s pain beautifully. They both deserved their wins.

Scott Clifton was unbelievably impressive in his scenes. His rival, in my opinion, was Billy Flynn, who also gave a great performance this year. But I think Scott deserved the win; he took Liam to a whole new level this year with his seething anger and pain because of what Quinn put him through. Congrats on the record!

I may have missed it but–
Who were the judges???
They are responsible for the outcomes.

I’d bet some of the judges do not even watch the soaps.

So— who can give the names of the judges????

Beavis and Butthead?

YES!!! Outstanding Drama Series: General Hospital wins for the second straight year!!!

The best daytime drama series category was first created in 1972 and GH is still the runaway leader with 13 total show wins (81, 84, 95, 96, 97, 99, 00, 05, 06, 08, 12, 16, and 17) so congrats to the cast and crew of GH for taking home the top prize once again. Outstanding Directing Team, too, for the second straight year!

Frank and Jelly submitted the back to back episodes from the Julexis wedding on Feb 23rd and Feb 24th, 2016. The back to back submissions were a exciting fantastic choice, imo, and showcased basically the entire cast at their very best. Totally action packed, high stakes drama, thrilling cliffhangers, romantic reunions, martial conflict, near drowning, punches flying, bullets connecting, and riveting confrontations in the entire two hours. The two hours were centered on the hostage situation at the church with Nathan getting shot, the big holdup on the pier during the gun shipment with Kiki getting shot, and Lulu going overboard outside the Haunted Star only to be rescued by Dante. Ava slapping the hell out of Paul and raging at Morgan at the hospital was excellent. Carly finally tearing into Sonny for all the danger and chucking the rifles into the water one by one was excellent. Maura West and Laura Wright were incredible in the fallout of the chaos at the church and the pier. Sonny jumping out of the wheelchair to save Kristina by slugging Dixon in the face was great stuff. The underwater shots of Lulu were very cool as was the slow buildup to Dante jumping in the water to save her. Alexis and Julian’s sitting down in the church after all the mayhem ended was actually very enjoyable. Morgan going ballistic after seeing a bloody Kiki on the ground was quite compelling as was the arugment between Anna and Paul after they made the bust. TWO GREAT EPISODES!

PS: The Chew and The View didn’t win a single award this year. The Talk, Steve Harvey, and Ellen walked away with all the daytime talk show gold. ABC is lucky they have GH to give them something to brag about.

Great post, Jay! I love seeing some positivity about GH in the comments section of this site for a change. For 54 years and counting, the best soap opera on television….Long Live GH!!!

YES! Bravo to Bryan Craig and Congrats to Lexi Ainsworth! Best young actor and actress of 2017!

Bryan’s emmy reel was truly brillant and packed an emotional punch that was unmatched compared to the other four guys in his category. I was blown away by this acting performance and it was even more riveting watching it a second time without any cuts in the scenes. Bryan submitted the heartbreaking powerful scenes of Morgan’s reaction to Sonny and Carly deciding to have him committed (which was the majority of this six minute reel) along with the roof scenes with Morgan considering jumping and Sonny talking him down. No way and no how was he gonna lose here! The desperate pleading to his parents to not have him sent away, while having his arms tied down by a pair of restraints, was such raw intense gut wrenching drama. Morgan screaming at Diane telling her she’s fired and Morgan telling Andre to go to hell was also great stuff. Easily, the best work of this young man’s career, and it’s as close to perfection as you can get. Maurice Benard, Laura Wright, and Carolyn Hennesy all did great jobs in supporting the scenes. Come back Bryan!

Lexi coming back to the show in the fall of 2015 was such a great surprise and so was them giving her such a big story to work with to start off 2016. Kristina’s sexual fluidity journey was breaking new ground on this show and was easily one of my favorite parts of last year. I really thought it lead to some good family centered drama in key reveal scenes with Sonny, Alexis, and Molly. Lexi is the best young actress this show has had since Julie Berman, imo, and it made me very happy they showcased her so well with some challenging dramatic material. I really enjoyed watching her eleven minute reel and feel like it captured the meaty parts of this storyline very well. Kristina explaining to Sonny and Alexis that she got kicked out of school for offering sex for a grade was the main highlight. She really nailed all the emotional beats in these scenes and expressed herself so well about not wanting to feel like a failure to her parents. The remainder of the reel was a good subtle performance by Lexi with Sonny confronting Kristina after catching her kissing Parker outside the hotel room. She is asking him if he would be able to accept a gay daughter in these scenes. I thought this reel concluded on a warm heartwarming note with Kristina crying tears of joy and falling into a hug with Sonny after he tells her he will love her no matter what. More Lexi please! Write for her!

Excellent post, Jay Trotter! I agree with all you’ve said. I particularly loved Bryan Craig’s performances from the time he set foot on the show. Fantastic actor. He broke my heart in his scenes…

Couldn’t agree more again. I got chills watching Bryan Craig’s scenes when they originally aired and again in watching his Emmy reel. Bryan never got the credit he deserved for the strides he made from the time he joined the show, learning and improving under the wing of greats like Maurice Benard, Laura Wright, Maura West, to become one of the best young actors in the industry. I was sorry to see him leave GH, but I have doubt he’ll have a lot of success in whatever he does.

Lexi, they didn’t write a lot for her, as you pointed out, Jay. But the quality stuff they did write for her all ended up in her reel. The coming out scenes with her and Maurice were so thoughtfully done. And they struck me right in the heart personally, as that conversation is one that I’ve never to this day has the courage to have with my own father.

Two very well deserved wins.

I have a feeling, Dan and Jay, that Bryan may reprise his role down the line. I know many people didn’t like the character; others feel it would take away from all the grieving that the characters (and, the audience, went through). I don’t agree. I’d love to see Bryan/Morgan back on the canvas. After all, it’s a soap and his body was never found. It doesn’t take away from the stories and acting following his supposed death and I think his there’s plenty of story left for Morgan.

Jay : excellent post on Lexie AinsWORTH

isn’t she something

she was discarded as not being “Barbie” enough .. and or having that picturesque figure

she got herself together… when asked to return… and has never not once let up.

she is thee key character of Alexis Davis family… yawn along with Sam and Molly.

altho Molly will always get a nod.. as long as she stops with all her morality… god.. think like her mother… enough.

Kristina is magic. GH just is not doing enough with her character… Kristina with either/or Parker and Aaron… struck gold.. and they just left that by the wayside

well expletive to that… hear that Frank, Jean, and Shelley… seriously you are flawed

Congrats Ms. Ainsworth… love your character.. you lighten up my load of too much Sam… god

Funny quote: I would like to know how you get robbed if the Emmy was never in your possession to begin with? Hughes was lead not supporting so was Mansi the woman from B&B her reel was great and she was supporting and when was the guy from B&B considered a guest he is recurring . This is why a lot of viewers shake their heads as far as best soap none they all are struggling!

I am surprised so many people have written so many negative comments. ALL of these actors are hard working. ALL of these actors made it through the first round of voting. Obviously the voting committee saw something you didn’t. I may not agree with every storyline or the winners, but I raise a glass to everyone that won.

My highlights were seeing Susan Lucci and once again seeing how much she means to daytime. Her tribute to Agnes Nixon was amazing. Although I loved seeing Kate Mansi win Best Supporting Actress, “DOOL” has done a great job with finding the new Abigail, Marci Miller. I loved her scenes with Gabi Friday and should be considered for next year’s Emmy Awards.

During the past year, I have loved “B&B.” There was so many great performances, including Heather Tom, Katherine Kelly Lang, John McCook, Rena Sofer, Scott Clifton. In recent weeks, Pierson Fode and Courtney Hope (Thomas and Sally) have been amazing.

“DOOL” has been showing signs of greatness again in the past few weeks. I do not love the Nicole/Brady on-the-run storyline, but Eric and Ari are doing some great work. Camilla Banas is showing even more growth and becomes more beautiful every day. Billy Flynn is an incredible actor. It may sound strange, but I like Abby and Chad better when they are fighting.:) The new actor playing Tripp is showing lots of promise, with his scenes with Kayla Friday outside the Brady Pub were fantastic.

All of the stars looked fantastic, but Marci Miller, Laura Wright, Aisha Tyler, Susan Lucci, Kate Mansi, Billy Flynn, and the ever-beautiful Katherine Kelly Lang, looked stunning. I would like to see even more daytime stars as presenters next year. Although I love Gladys Knight, I think having a daytime legend (Liz Hubbard, Erica Slezak and Kim Zimmer) present the award would have been special.

The quality of the show was the best I have seen. I have to admit I do not watch a lot of shows online, but the quality of the show was amazing. we NEED to see this show back on television. Can we not pre-empt “Young and Restless” and “Bold and Beautiful” one day and have it televised during the day, like it was in the 1970s?

Congrats to everyone!

I’m so glad Gina Tognoni and Kate Mansi won.

But Steve Burton winning Supporting Actor??? And General Hospital for Best Drama? Yikes!

I am so Happy, Gina won the Daytime Emmy. She is a terrific actress. Bravo Gina, we love you as Phyllis.

OK—

I would like to see a list of the judges….

Why are the judges hidden unavailable to the public??

Who were the judges????

SONNY!

I’m sorry, but, BOTH that Scott Clifton dude and that TOTALLY OVERRATED Steve Burton DID NOT DESERVE to win…AT ALL!!!!! NO, NO AND MORE NO!!!!!!!!!!

Later.

Gina won and it was awesome, for those that commented that they wanted the GH actresses to win, please. Your show won get over it.

GIna is an awesome actress to win 3 times is great in a tough category.

GINA RULES DAYTIME, Y&R so glad you got her, not missing the old Phyllis that’s for sure.

Adam…AW, YEAH, dude…as always, Gina Tognoni TRULY ROCKS!!!!! TOTALLY!!!!!

I really don’t get wha’ts so great about Scott Clifton, he really is just playing himself. He does deserve an award for sustained performance though in dealing with B&Bs repetitive storytelling for so many years now. And how does it work that one soap wins Best Drama, but another soap wins Best writing? Wouldn’t the two go hand in hand?

I was so happy to be able to view the Emmys this year. I could have done without that lame banter about whether or not Ms. Underwood would get to sleep with Mr. Lopez and the Basset Hound march that took too long, but was other wise happy with it. Would I have liked to have seen other people win some of those awards? Yes, but I don’t begrudge anyone who did win them. Our favorites always win because they win our adoration. That being said, I am so over the moon for my GH peeps who won! Yeah!

Days Of Our Lives

Arianne Zucker Reveals Her Last Days of our Lives Airdate

Arianne Zucker, who is no longer on contract with Days of our Lives, and involved in a lawsuit against the show, took to her You Tube channel and in her latest episode, and offered up what she believes is her final airdate as Nicole Walker DiMera.

The actress expressed: “I was really appreciative of the amount of support that I have had since leaving Days of our Lives.” She then added,  “My last airdate, I think, it’s July 29th and we’ll see how things go after that.”

Zucker went on to say how she has continued to receive overwhelming support since suing her former employer, Corday Productions, with the allegations that former Co-EP Albert Alarr sexually harassed her and other females at the show, and that the production company entity did not respond sufficiently and adequately.

Photo: JPI

After lodging her complaints, Zucker said her agents received two notices that Corday Productions were reducing her pay before her character was ultimately written off.  Zucker’s contract expired in January and since DAYS tapes over six months ahead it brings her final airdate, which as of now, to the end of July. Zucker is suing for harassment, discrimination, retaliation, negligent hiring and supervision, and wrongful termination among other claims.

Previously, Corday Productions issued this statement on Zucker’s claims: “The allegations in Ms. Zucker’s lawsuit are without merit. Corday Productions, offered to renew Ms. Zucker’s contract including offering her a pay increase. Rejecting Ms. Zucker’s counteroffer does not constitute retaliation. Complaints about Mr. Alarr’s on-set behavior were promptly investigated. Corday Productions fully cooperated with the impartial investigation and subsequently terminated Mr. Alarr.”

On her You Tube channel, Arianne went on to thank everyone who came out to the east coast fan event last weekend that featured several DAYS stars. She expressed, “My whole goal is to really help people stand up for themselves.” Arianne also shared she thinks it’s important for people who have gone through trauma to help each other through it.

DAYS and ‘Supernatural’ Alum Jensen Ackles Joins the Cast of Justin Hartley’s CBS Series ‘Tracker’

Look who’s joining Justin Hartley’s hit freshman drama, Tracker! None other than another soap alum, former Days of our Lives and Supernatural favorite Jensen Ackles.

In a reveal via Hartley’s Instagram on Thursday, Ackles is set to play Hartley’s on-screen brother on the CBS procedural drama. In Tracker, Colter Shaw is estranged from his brother, Russell, which has been a big part of the mystery of season one.

Ackles is best known for his long run as Dean Winchester in The CW’s Supernatural, a role he reprised in the prequel of the series The Winchesters. He also recently starred in ABC’s Big Sky as Sheriff Beau Arlen and in The Boys as Soldier Boy.

Jensen was the original Eric Brady on Days of our Lives, a role he played from 1997-2000, before departing for the world of primetime and film.  Eric was in love with Nicole played by Arianne Zucker. The part of Eric was recast with Greg Vaughan taking over the role in 2012.

In his Instagram post, Justin thanked everyone for watching Tracker, and then revealed Ackles as the surprise casting announcement in the role of Russell, while Jensen was playing pinball in the video! No word yet on when Jensen’s first episode as Russell will air. Stay tuned.

Wally Kurth Talks on His DAYS Daytime Emmy Nomination, His Emotional Scenes, and Remembering John Aniston

During our 2023 year-end honors at Michael Fairman TV, we named Wally Kurth as our pick for Best Overall Performance by an Actor for his double-turn as both Ned Quartermaine on General Hospital and as Justin Kiriakis on Days of our Lives. So, it was absolutely no surprise to us that Wally landed a Daytime Emmy nomination for his riveting work as a grieving Justin in the Supporting Actor category for the upcoming 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

On DAYS, Justin had been put through the emotional wringer, of first, losing his beloved Uncle Vic, played by the late John Aniston, and then finding out that Victor was the supposed biological father to Justin’s son, Alex (Rob Scott Wilson). If you didn’t reach for the hankies during some of Kurth’s work in these scenes, we don’t know what will make you do so.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Wally to get his reaction to his fourth Daytime Emmy nomination in the last six years. Kurth was nominated in the Supporting category in 2018, 2020 and now 2024 and Lead Actor in 2021.

In addition, Wally shares what scenes were on his nominated reel, how John Aniston impacted his work, how he has changed as an actor over the years with a new outlook, and being the only actor out there with two long-running roles on two long-running soaps, and much more. Here’s what Wally had to share below.

Congratulations on your well-deserved nomination. You decided to submit yourself this year for Emmy contention in both Lead Actor for GH and Supporting Actor at DAYS, correct?

WALLY: I did. I thought the DAYS reel was a little more dramatic, much more emotional. I had thought with the way the judging goes that it might be a little bit more, winnable, if you will. I enjoyed and was proud of my work at General Hospital, so it’s all good. I’m thrilled. It’s always nice to be nominated.

What scenes did you ultimately choose for your Supporting Actor reel?

WALLY: I started chronologically, as always, trying to tell a little bit of a story. I actually started with a scene where Justin has to tell Maggie (Suzanne Rogers) that Victor’s (the late John Aniston) plane went down and it was not found. Then, the scene with Bonnie (Judi Evans) where I sort of have to let it all out, and grieve the loss of this man who was practically Justin’s father, but it was his Uncle Vic. We have a little scene talking about Victor, and then there is a short snippet at the funeral where Justin eulogizes Victor. Next, we jump to scene where Justin discovers the letter where Angelica admits that indeed Victor is Alex’s father (Rob Scott Wilson). So then, Justin has to tell Alex, and then I also sort of grieve the fact that I’m no longer his father. Justin basically lost his son. It was very dramatic and very emotional. I was guessing the judges would be like, “Hey! Enough with the crying! Stop, you big baby!” But, they didn’t. They must have thought that it was convincing enough that it felt really truthful at how Justin was upset about these two unfortunate realizations.

You bring up a really good point. I talk to actors all the time about crying on Emmy reels. Sometimes, many feel it might put voters off. But obviously, this time it worked well for you!

WALLY:  What I liked about the crying scenes was that, like in real life, you’re not crying all the time when something bad is happening, right? I think crying happens and it takes you off guard. It happens without you realizing it. These were all moments when Justin was alone, really. Bonnie comes in the room where Justin is just kind of like dealing with it. And then her coming in, opens up Justin and she is there to hold him. I think that often happens in real life. I thought that was correct for the writers to do that, you know, that Justin would break down when he was alone.

Did you feel the pressure of wanting to get these scenes when Victor died and at his memorial, just right due to the enormity to it, and to do justice for John Aniston?

WALLY: I allowed myself to use my heartbreak over John Aniston. I loved him. I just sort of allowed his presence for me in the scenes. It was sweet. It was good for me. I’m just thinking about it now and I feel teary-eyed. John was such a sweet man. He led by example, and he really did teach me how to be a professional actor, and he was a mentor. He never told me anything specific, but he was just John, and in the scenes, this was the time for me tell him how I feel.

Photo: JPI

Then, you had the heartbreaking scenes with Rob Scott Wilson where Justin tells Alex he is not his father!

WALLY:  I thought that was just really challenging material. As I get older, I just trust the material, and don’t get ahead of myself. I trust myself with the emotion. Just let it happen if it happens. When I first read it, I kind of imagined what it could look like and then you just let it unfold from there.

You’ve got Robert Gossett (Marshall, GH), A Martinez (Nardo, The Bay), Mike Manning (Caleb, The Bay), and Bryton James (Devon, Y&R) all in your category. Robert has won two Daytime Emmys in a row, last year for Supporting Actor and the year before for Guest Performer.

WALLY:  l love Robert. I worked with the character Marshall on General Hospital, and we had so much fun. He’s a great guy and a really good actor. A Martinez is the best guy ever. I have such admiration for him. Whenever I see him, we always really connect and to be in included with him is great. Bryton James, I don’t know, but I know he beat me in this category in 2020. Mike Manning, I didn’t get the opportunity to know when he was at DAYS as he weren’t in scenes together, but I hear good things about him, too.

When you are judging Emmy reels, what do you look for when you’re voting on a performance?

WALLY: That’s a really great question. And because let’s face it, there’s just a lot of terrific talent in daytime. This year, I judged two categories. I don’t just go with, “Okay, who’s crying the most.” I really try to go with the one who’s touches me the most, who surprises me and moves me. And so, if you go with that, you’re probably going in the right direction. I also think that upfront you do need to kind of give them something in the first couple minutes that shows you know what you’re doing and don’t make it too repetitive.

Who did you first tell you were nominated?

WALLY: My manager, Michael Bruno called me. I was in Chicago with my daughters having a late breakfast and I knew the nominations were going to happen around 11 am Chicago time. I didn’t tell my daughters about what was happening, just in case, I didn’t get nominated. So, when Michael called, I went, “Oh, boy!” I told my daughters who were sitting at the table with me. So, they were the first two people that I could tell, and that was really nice.  We had champagne which was really funny because I bought three little glasses of champagne, and as soon as I bought it, we toasted. They said, “We don’t really like champagne.” So, I ended up drinking all three glasses. (Laughs)

What do you think of Eric Martsolf (Brady), your Day Players Band member, and DAYS co-star getting a Lead Actor nomination?

WALLY: I remember, I was like talking to him and I was like, “Eric, are you going to submit yourself?” And he is like, “I don’t know. I don’t really have anything …” And the next thing you know, he’s nominated. I’m like, “Wow! I guess he found something!” (Laughs) I love Eric. I have such respect for him and his gift, and he works really hard. So, I was very happy for him. I’m glad we weren’t in the same category, however.

How many years now have you been playing Justin on DAYS?

WALLY: I started here 37 years ago in 1987. I was there for four years and then I left. Then, 18 years later, Ken Corday (EP, DAYS) invited me back in 2009 and I’ve been on the show now for 15 years. So, I guess a total of 20 years on and off over the last 37 years. Everyone remembers 1987-1991 … those were big, big years for Justin and Adrienne who back then were a supercouple.

Have you determined who you would thank in your acceptance speech if you win this year’s Supporting Actor Daytime Emmy?

WALLY: I feel like this year I kind of have an idea of what I would say. I think I can remember all of that without writing it down. If I had gotten nominated for both shows, I was definitely going to point out and thank the powers-that-be for giving me dual citizenship and how much I appreciate that. I do think that being on both soaps, I will go to my grave believing that it’s made me a better actor. In fact, since I’ve been doing both shows, I’ve been nominated for Daytime Emmys. I’ve become a better actor. I feel like maybe it’s just that I’ve gotten older and wiser, but I feel as though when I go in there to work, I’m really focused and I’m really prepared. I know I pretty much get one shot to get it. We’re in the business of “one takes” now in the soaps.

People are so lucky to even have one enduring role in their careers, but you’ve been able to have two, and they’re completely separate characters on two legacy shows; one which just turned 61, General Hospital, and the other Days of our Lives which will soon celebrate 60 years, as well.

WALLY: I didn’t plan on it. I must have done something right. Back in 2009, Ken called me up and invited me back to DAYS. I really jumped in. I’d been out of work for four or five years. I went back with a whole new attitude about the work, about the genre.  In 2004, when I left General Hospital, I was kind of burnt out. Looking back on it, I didn’t have a good attitude and I was just done. I was kind of tired. New writers come in and sometimes, when you have new writers that look at your character differently, it can be very difficult, because you just know that their passion is not with your character. However, in this case, I’m like, “I’m going to take whatever the writers give me and do the best I can and do my job. Let the writers do their job.” I think the writers also know that I really respect them and I’m not going to complain. I’m not going to tell them what to do and I’m going to stay out of it. They have enough to work out. They have enough to do. I’m going to be the problem solver, not the problem creator. There are enough problem creators. Believe me when I tell you that every time I leave those sets, I’m like, “Thank you. I love it.  See you the next time I see you.” I know how lucky I am to do both shows and to have this opportunity to act at my age and still be sent scripts. I love the art of acting. I’d do it for free. The fact that they’re paying me and I am able to do this and work with these great, wonderful, talented actors every day, it’s kind of mind-blowing.

So, will you be rooting for Wally to take home the gold in this year’s Outstanding Supporting Actor in Daytime Drama Series at the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards on June 7th live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+?
