Ex-‘Empire’ Star Jussie Smollett Found Guilty On Five Counts For Hate Crime Hoax
Jussie Smollett (Ex-Jamal Lyon) from Fox’s former primetime soap opera, Empire, was found guilty on Thursday on five of six felony counts of disorderly conduct stemming from making a false report to the Chicago police department that he was the victim of a hate crime.
The actor’s account of the story dates back to 2019 and finally made its way to the Chicago court system for trial.
In the end, a jury of six men and six women deliberated for more than nine hours Wednesday and today to return the verdict after sitting through testimonies of 13 witnesses.
According to reports, Smollett did not look at his family or the judge during the reading of the verdicts on the six counts he was charged instead he looked at the jury members.
Smollett could face up to 3 years in a prison and a $25,000 fine, Judge James Linn will have discretion in imposing a concurrent or consecutive sentence for each count. That will happen at a later date.
Special prosecutor Dan Webb said at a post-verdict news conference: “Mr. Smollett would not have lost this case as he did today unless the jury found that he lied to them. The fact that he came up with a completely ridiculous story to explain his misconduct did not apparently have an impact on the jury’s verdict.”
During the trial brothers, Bola and Ola Osundairo testified that Smollett had paid them to stage the hate crime attack on him in an attempt to get media attention. The brothers testified that they fake punched Smollett, poured bleach on him, put a noose around his neck and used racist and homophobic slurs, because Jussie told them to do so in return for the money.
According to Smollett’s defense team, they will appeal the verdict.
So, what do you think about the guilty verdict for Jussie Smollett? Comment below.
So sad that anyone is that desperate for attention. What’s confusing is that his career was really taking off when this happened. Why then? Either way, a boatload of public money was wasted on this nonsense. Ultimately, it’s taxpayers that suffer. As usual.
I so agree. What an idiot, and he’s now thrown his career away.
I believe the city has a civil suit against him to recover the money.
I don’t understand either why someone would go to these extremes. He thought he was smarter than everyone. He’s still blaming others.
Yeah, Soaphound—-what’s even sadder is how eager some of us were to believe him—while many of us were confused.
I question who tells the truth anymore.
Speaking of truth—about GH ( right now, my fave—yup, I can be so fickle.LOL)—-I have this hunch Stella is really Curtis’ bio mother.
Seeing Marshall was quite a shock . Is that the reason he disappeared for so long?
Starting to look a lot like Paulina’s story ( DOOL).
In no way do I justify what Smollett did…. but if he ends up doing prison time for beating the crap out of himself, while a literal terrorist who murdered two people in cold blood (and seriously wounded a third) in front of hundreds of witnesses can walk free….. well, that just ain’t right.
Mortal justice is really slacking these days. Fortunately, the truly guilty don’t get off that easily, once they have shuffled off their mortal coil.
On the other horn, if Smollett found himself at the receiving end of a civil suit from the producers of “Empire” for killing their show, I’d say he definitely had that coming. The show never recovered from his sudden departure, despite the talents of the remaining cast.
I think Jossied deserves ome jail time; I was a huge fan of his before and admit to a crush, too. But in the midst of all the racial turbulence and violence that’s actually taking place in this country, faking an attack was hideous on too many levels to count . He should pay for it. At the same time, I hear you about Rittenhouse. The boy should be locked up for decades; outright murderer. The fact that the cult took up a gofundme for his defense is just another example of the crazies running around with voting rights, sitting in govt, etc. Freaking nightmare.
Good. Let’s hope he gets years of prison time.
While he didn’t commit the most heinous of crimes, he affected the civil rights movements of several groups at the time by being generally and genuinely selfish. And foolish. His family knows what he did. Jurnee, his sister knows for sure. She most likely dressed him down for it, but still supported him. He may get a Lifetime Movie out the deal (LOL) but he still damaged his career. His African American audience, as well as LGBTQ won’t let this easily die down. But the details on the witness stand out of his own mouth about the sexual encounters. Oh my days. TMI. Beat me but don’t hurt me. 3500$. I would have knocked his deluded butt right out. Real talk.
Maybe Oprah can rehabilitate him, and get him in a Disney production…

Jussie Smollett, Former ‘Empire’ Star, Conviction Overturned in Hate Crime Hoax By Illinois Supreme Court
Remember when Lee Daniels’ primetime music industry soap drama, Empire (2015-2020), was all the rage on Fox? Well, at that time its breakout star, Jussie Smollett (ex-Jamal Lyon), got himself in very hot water with the law as the series was coming to its conclusion in its sixth and final season.
Now on Thursday, Smollett, who was convicted on charges that he staged a racist and homophobic attack against himself in downtown Chicago in 2019 and lied to police in overwhelming evidence against him, had his conviction overturned due to prosecutorial issues by the Illinois Supreme Court decision.
The state’s Supreme Court ruled that a special prosecutor should not have been allowed to intervene after the Cook County state’s attorney initially dropped charges against Smollett in exchange for him forfeiting his $10,000 bond and conducting community service.

In the charges, Jussie who is also gay, claimed two men assaulted him, spouted racial and homophobic slurs and tossed a noose around his neck. This lead to a very wide-ranging search for suspects by Chicago police detectives which ate up manpower. Empire also filmed in Chicago at the time. In the original court case, prosecutors alleged Smollett staged the attack because he was unhappy with the show and the network’s response to hate mail he received.
Justice Elizabeth Rochford wrote in the court’s 5-0 opinion, “We are aware that this case has generated significant public interest and that many people were dissatisfied with the resolution of the original case and believed it to be unjust. Nevertheless, what would be more unjust than the resolution of any one criminal case would be a holding from this court that the state was not bound to honor agreements upon which people have detrimentally relied.”

Smollett’s attorneys had argued that the case was over when Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s office dropped all 16 counts against Smollett. However, that plea deal faced a massive backlash. Next, a special prosecutor was appointed, and a grand jury restored charges, leading to Smollett’s 2021 conviction on five of the counts.
In a statement, Smollett’s attorney, Nenye Uche, shared, “This was not a prosecution based on facts, rather it was a vindictive persecution and such a proceeding has no place in our criminal justice system. Rule of law was the big winner today.” He thanked the Supreme Court for “restoring order to Illinois’ criminal law jurisprudence.”
Special prosector, Dan Webb disagreed with the court’s decision expressing, “The Illinois Supreme Court did not find any error with the overwhelming evidence presented at trial that Mr. Smollett orchestrated a fake hate crime and reported it to the Chicago Police Department as a real hate crime, or the jury’s unanimous verdict that Mr. Smollett was guilty of five counts of felony disorderly conduct.
At the original trial, it was revealed that Smollett paid $3,500 to two men whom he knew to carry out the ‘fake’ attack. Prosecutors said he told them what slurs to shout, and to yell that Smollett was in “MAGA country.” This was in reference, at that time, to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign slogan.
When the dust settled. Smollett was sentenced to 150 days in jail, only six of which he served before he was freed pending appeal and ordered to pay $130,000 in restitution for the trouble he caused the Chicago PD.
Smollett recently starred in a new movie with another former soap star, Vivica A. Fox (ex-Generations) in the feature, The Lost Holliday.
Following the news of the overturning of Smollett’s conviction, TMZ’s Harvey Levin, a lawyer himself for the past 50 years, had some choice words on the ruling. You can see that below.

Taraji P. Henson Says She Fired Her Entire Team After They Failed to Capitalize on Her Success as ‘Empire’s’ Cookie Lyon
When Fox’s hit primetime soap opera, Empire, hit the air it became a smash hit, especially due to its lead female character, Cookie Lyon, as played by Taraji P. Henson.
The actress played Cookie for all she was worth and the some becoming one of the more original soap and television characters. After all, Cookie went to jail for 17 years before being released, and was the wife of former drug dealer, now music mogul, Lucious Lyon played by Terrence Howard.
Now, Taraji revealed all was not kosher behind the scenes during a sit-down interview for the SAG-AFTRA Foundation (see below). It was there, she revealed that she had to fire her entire PR team and more, because of how they failed to capitalize on her rousing success at the time as Cookie.

The moment came about during the Q&A Henson was asked what was the best business decision she ever made. She swiftly answered: “Firing everybody after Cookie,” adding, “Everybody had to f**ing’ go. Where is my deal? Where’s my commercial? Cookie was at the top of the fashion game. Where is my endorsement? What did you have set up for after this? That’s why you all haven’t seen me in so long. They had nothing set up.”
Empire fans recall that a ‘Cookie’ prequel had been in the works to continue the character after the series was canceled after six seasons, but nothing happened. At the time reports shared, Danny Strong, co-creator of the Empire was said to be co-writing the series, and it would come through Henson’s new production banner.
Taraji explained what went down behind the scenes: “All they wanted was another Cookie show, and I said, ‘I’ll do it, but it has to be right. The people deserve, she’s to beloved for y’all to f**k it up.’ And so, when they didn’t get it right, I was like, ‘Well, that’s it,’ and they had nothing else. ‘You’re all f**ng fired.”

Henson added that she felt like she had Stockholm Syndrome from the entire situation, which is defines as a syndrome ‘where hostages sometimes develop a psychological bond with their captors.’ (Think Kevin, Y&R!) The moral of Henson’s story was to make sure the people you pay and who work for you, understand that you are the talent and nothing happens without you including them collecting a paycheck off you.
Henson can currently be seen in the musical version of The Color People in movie theatres everywhere.
Check out her emotional and enlightening conversation with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation below.
Now let us know, do you think Cookie Lyon was one of the best TV characters and should have either been spun off into her own show, or Henson should have appeared in more commercial and endorsement deals given the popularity of the character? Weigh-in via the comment section.
